NEW & AGAIN CONSIGNMENT FURNITURE GALLERY Story By: Mary Raffetto Photos By: Lindsay Ortez

DOES YOUR HOME NEED FURNISHINGS OR DO YOUR FURNISHINGS NEED A HOME?

Either way, you’ll want to keep New and Again Consignments on your radar whenever you are in Lodi or Modesto where their second franchise began welcoming “recycled treasures” as well as treasure-hunters just one year ago. The Lodi store, now in its fifth year, is a popular stop on School Street where its small storefront belies the giant square footage and vast selection within. “The merchandise is always changing” says owner Hayley Jackson, “It’s a revolving door of inventory. Some of our customers come in every week just to see what’s new.” What she doesn’t mention, but is immediately obvious, is that the items for sale are extraordinarily clean, in good condition and well organized, making for a shopping experience as pleasant as any – maybe more-so considering the alluring prices. Of course there are the dining room sets, both vintage and contemporary, the china cabinets, nightstands, armoires, bookcases and sofas -many appearing to be brand-new. But it is the enormous array of art, accessories, china, table linens and collectibles which catches first-time visitors by surprise. Jackson and her father, Allan Levy, cooked up their consignment concept and opened for business on Black Friday 4 years ago each bringing their unique talents and abilities to the partnership. Jackson’s interior design degree and passion for decorating allow her to use space

and color to help clients visualize décor concepts, while Levy has a lifelong love of antiques, auctions, research and entrepreneurship. “He is the brains and brawn behind this operation” Jackson says of her dad and his win-win formula which has attracted as many sellers as buyers. Their simple 50/50 split of the sales price with the furniture owners, or consignors, makes for a stress-free, or, as they call it, “no muss no fuss” arrangement.

and, one weekend a month, the warehouse doors are opened for a furniturepalooza-type blowout. This event is key to making room for incoming merchandise and is enthusiastically attended by the public. “It’s a team effort” says Jackson, crediting her devoted staff for the work they do and the all-around success of the business. “It’s very rewarding to help people find what they are looking for while enabling others to sell.” “It’s meeting

Estate sales in which large quantities of belongings must be sold are deftly arranged and conducted by the New and Again staff, often at the actual site of the estate. This service vastly simplifies things and helps to ensure that sellers receive top dollar for all goods sold. Their website, NewandAgainOnline.com, features easy-to-sign-up-for newsletters, merchandise photos, and clear explanations of how the business works. For example, furniture and other items which have not sold after 90 days can either be picked up by their owners or donated to charity. For this purpose New and Again works closely with the American Cancer Society. But before the lingering items are donated to a charity of their owners’ choice they are given one last chance and moved to the warehouse out back. There they are discounted generously,

people, helping the community, knowing that what we do continues to reach people – that is very satisfying.” And, she adds, “It’s a lot of fun.”

Framed art isn’t your only choice for a bedroom focal point. Here’s how to create one with a distinct look. By kit davey

12

S a n J o aqu i n Wo m an

JANUARY 2011

The focal point in most bedrooms is the area directly over the bed, and the standard decorating technique is to hang one or two framed pieces of art. But why not go for something a little different? For an unusual bedroom focal point, try one of these suggestions.

DRESS THE WALLS TRY A PAINT OR WALLPAPER TECHNIQUE: ■ Pick a predominant hue in your color scheme and paint the section of wall behind your bed in that color, leaving the space to either side and the other walls off-white or another color. ■ Sponge or rag the area behind the bed in a different color, filling in an arch of textured color directly over the bed. ■ Choose an image in your bedspread, from a piece of artwork, or from an architectural detail in the room – a flowerpot, for example – a section from an antique quilt, etc., and stencil your decorative motif in the area over your bed. Or, buy ready-made stencils – such as a pair of angels, a fleur de lis or a large floral swag – from a local craft shop. ■ If you’re up for an even artier effect, you can create your own mural or trompe l’oueil. A few simple ideas: a shuttered window and landscape beyond, a painting of a painting, or clouds floating across an evening sky. ■ Use wall paper border to frame in a rectangular shape over the bed. Paint the area inside the “frame” in a harmonizing color. ■ Cut out large-scale flowers from a roll of wall paper and glue them to the wall over your bed. THINK SOFT ■ Wrap or drape an obi (a wide silk belt used by Japanese women to fasten their kimonos) or a long length of colorful fabric from a curtain rod. ■ Hang a collection of antique lingerie, gloves, fans or hats in a pleasing arrangement. ■ Use a quilt hanger from to display a rug, quilt or blanket. ■ Create a clothing line using a length of twine stretched between two nails and use clothes pins to display antique doll clothes, baby clothes or handkerchiefs. ■ Drape an antique piano shawl or tablecloth between two swag buttons. ■ Hang a colorful silk flower wreath over your bed. ■ Want to give your bedroom a romantic look? Suspend a mosquito net from the ceiling and let the sheer netting drape over the sides of your bed. ■ Give your bed a canopied look. The directions seem complicated, but it’s really quick, inexpensive and easy to create this dramatic look. Here’s the overall look: drape a long length of wide fabric from behind your bed, over a dowel hanging from the ceiling, across the length of the bed, over a second dowel and down to the floor on the other end of the bed. The parallel dowels should be as wide as your bed and suspended with molly bolt-secured ceiling hooks and a length of wire or a chain about six inches from the ceiling. ■ Install a curtain rod over your bed and hang tab curtains across the rod. A bed with a curvy metal headboard looks great against this backdrop. ■ Install a row of drapery hooks or swag buttons (six or more) above your head and hang tie-top curtains from the hooks. Or, use the hooks to hang a row of hats. ■ Use a long length of fabric, or a ready-made swag scarf and hang it from a single ornate swag bracket which you have centered and securely fastened four or five feet over your bed. Drape the fabric to either side of your bed. You can get a similar effect by using a single swing arm tab-curtain rod . Install the rod several feet over your bed with the arm will sticking out 12 to 18 inches over the bed. Hang a pair of tab curtains on the rod, draping them to either side of the bed. ■ Install two or three swag buttons over the bed a foot or so from the ceiling. Drape a swag scarf across the buttons.

Super-sized sofas are fast becoming fixtures in homes, spreading bedroom coziness throughout the house

14

S a n J o aqu i n Wo m an

When Steven Sabados shopped for a new sofa to go in his apartment, he didn’t put a limit on size. What he purchased was huge by any standards. “It’s the biggest sofa – 116 inches long and 4 1/2 feet deep,” says Sabados, an interior decorator. “I can have four people lying down watching a movie. It’s like a bed – down-filled and incredibly comfortable.” It’s not by chance the designer compares his sofa to a bed. His piece of furniture is as deep as a twin-size bed and 26 inches longer than the prevailing 90-inch benchmark for a luxury sofa. And Sabados isn’t alone in his preference for super-sized sofas. “There’s an oversized thing going on,” says Peter Klick, program coordinator of design integration for the Harrington College of Design in Chicago. People are looking for the delicious sensation of sprawling out on a bed, but in their living rooms, according to Klick. “It’s a kind of coziness … ‘I feel good in my bed, why not in my living room,’” says Klick. Opting for an oversized sofa, in effect, he says, “is put-

ting the bed in the living room.” Furniture manufacturers are accommodating the snuggle-up trend by offering sofas so deep and so long that a circle of friends can sink into them. With that comfort however, comes the challenge of trying to integrate the sofa into your quarters. New homes with large family rooms are wellsuited to the super-sized sofas. But even older homes with less extravagant space can accommodate large sofas. By selecting the appropriate fabrics, accessories and even wall colors, you can make the sofa look like part of the room, rather than the main attraction. Take the size of the room and the scale of other furnishings into account, say design experts. “I don’t think there’s a rule for space, but you don’t want your sofa to take up the entire room,” says Becky Weber, the upholstery manager and buyer for Crate & Barrel. You’ll still want end tables, lamps and maybe a chair or two. Don’t be tempted to shrink the size of your other furnishings.

JANUARY 2011

If you have a sofa that’s oversized everything else has to be oversized. You have to fill up the room in proportion. However, you’ll probably discover your room looks better with fewer pieces of furniture. Remove a couple of lamps, tables and chairs for a more spacious feel. Surrounding the sofa with accessories helps to anchor the piece. Rugs are one option. Pillows are another. Layer on unusual pillows to break the expanse of sofa fabric. To visually shrink the sofa, keep things monochromatic. If you have bright pillows on a beige sofa you bring more attention to the sofa. Have brown on beige or a few tones of brown on beige. Changing the color of the room’s walls also helps the sofa blend in. Avoid stark contrasts. If you have a chocolate-colored wall and a giant white sofa, the sofa will look even larger. To tone down the sofa, find a color in the sofa you really enjoy and paint a wall the same color.

H EALTH & BEAUTY

Story By: Charleen Earley Photos By: Lindsay Ortez It all began as a business idea among three Stockton women who worked in a salon together to open up their own waxing studio. Based on the needs of their clients, they said goodbye to working for someone else and hello to their own gig, recently relocated to Miracle Mile on Pacific Avenue. Coming up with a unique and catchy business name without scaring people off with the w-word (waxing), Stacey Hart, Hilda Martinez and Michelle Sahyoun collectively named it Browtique and Body Lounge. “Brow design and eyebrow rehab became a huge part of our business, so we knew we wanted to use the word ‘brow.’ We also knew we wanted it to be kind of a boutique-y name because we are not your typical foo-foo day spa,” said Hart, a 10year veteran of skin care and waxing.

OUR EXPERTS WILL SHAPE YOUR EYEBROW

JANUARY 2011

“The name was created on something we do best - create awesome brows,” said Martinez, who was born and raised in Stockton and attended Federico Beauty Institute in Sacramento. “We also do the best Brazilians.”

We are the IT place to get excellent treatments, added Hart. You will always be VIP when you walk in and you will always feel right at home.

Besides waxing to include full body for men and women, they also offer facials and massages. While some salons try to do everything, Browtique only offers what they specialize in; it’s what’s given them great reviews on Yelp. “I am very thankful for our great Yelp reviews. We have amazing clients,” said Sahyoun, a certified massage therapist, who offers custom massages specializing in reflexology and custom epicuren body treatments. Their clientele are from all demographics to include housewives, college students, nurses, blue collar workers, correctional officers, business owners, even pre-teens. When it comes to the painful experience of waxing, knows just how to make her clients feel as comfortable as possible. “We chat, we laugh and I rip!” said Martinez. “And when they come back, we pick up where we left off. I am a baby too, so I wax my clients as if I were waxing myself. I hate pain.”

CARMEL

32

S a n J o aqu i n Wo m an

Story By: Charleen Earley

JANUARY 2011

One of nicest things about living in California is that you’re one to two hours away from fun. Whether it’s skiing down white slopes or enjoying a tasty lunch overlooking the ocean, might I suggest you jump in the car and head 120 miles south of San Francisco to Carmel, otherwise known as Carmelby-the-sea. Not only is it rich in natural beauty nestled in the Monterey Peninsula, but it’s also eye-candy for the artistic soul, boasting one of the oldest galleries in town with the oldest co-op on the West Coast and second oldest in the U.S. It’s also where renowned photographer Edward Weston moved to in 1929 and shot the first of many nature photographs, and where Ansel Adams made his home in 1962. Got film? Artists, writers, poets, even actors dominated this town, to include actor-director Clint Eastwood, who was mayor for one term from 1986 to 1988. Eastwood also opened the restaurant Hogs Breath Inn Restaurant and Bar on San Carlos Street in 1971.

With its European charm and white sandy beaches, the city was incorporated in 1916 by James Frank Devendorf and Frank Powers who were environmental-minded by making sure that if a tree were in the middle of a road, the tree stayed and cars (Model T Fords at that time) drove around it. Today you can enjoy world class food and wine in restaurants with international cuisine, spas and salons, fantastic lodgings, even a complimentary mini makeover at the Cos Bar – all within one square mile walking distance. Enjoy local seafood and organic produce at Basil Carmel on San Carlos or French cuisine at Andre’s Bouchée Bistro and Wine Bar between Mission and 7th. You won’t need to leave Fido at home either, since this dog-friendly city sports a Fountain of Woof in Carmel Plaza, where canines may drink to their little hearts’ content. Not to worry, restaurants, hotels and retail establishments allow man’s best friend in too.

Count a night’s stay and afternoon tea service at the 1929 landmark Cypress Inn as “a few of your favorite things,” which is co-owned by Denny LeVett and Doris Day. However, just one note of caution before you pack leave your stilettos at home. Carmel is also known for several unusual laws, to include (but not enforced) a ban on wearing high-heeled shoes without a permit. It was endorsed to prevent lawsuits arising from tripping accidents caused by irregular pavement. Before you leave Carmel, jot down reasons to return, since there’s the AT&T Pebble Beach National ProAm, 72-hole PGA Tour Feb. 9 – 15, Dixieland Monterey, March 6-8, which promotes the education of youth in art of traditional jazz performance, and the Pebble Beach Spring Horse Shows, March 24-29.

CHICKEN POT PIE

Ingredients 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic 1 small yellow onion (diced) 2 medium carrots (peeled and diced) 4 Tbsp all purpose flour 1 cup low sodium chicken or vegetable broth 1 10 ounce package frozen peas with pearl onions 3 cups 2% milk 2 large red potatoes ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp fresh ground black pepper 8 oz boneless chicken breast (cubed) 1 tsp dried basil 1 tsp dried thyme 2 Tbsp parsley (minced) 3 buttermilk biscuits (from the dairy case) Directions: Heat olive oil in a large non-stick skillet and add garlic and onion. Cook slowly so that the garlic and onion soften but don’t turn brown. Add the carrots and cook until they are slightly soft. Add the flour and cook for about 3 minutes. Slowly add the chicken stock stirring constantly to keep any lumps from forming. Reduce heat to low. Rinse the frozen peas and onions in a strainer under warm water. Drain well and add to the pan. Add the milk, chicken breast, salt, pepper and herbs to the pan. Cook over low heat stirring occasionally. Microwave the potatoes for 5 minutes on high setting. Cut them into 1/2 inch cubes. Add to the sauce and cook for about 30 minutes Ladle into four oven proof bowls. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Lightly flour a chopping board and, using a rolling pin, roll the biscuit dough together and then roll out until 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 4 equal pieces and roll very thin. The biscuits should be slightly smaller than the bowl the pot pie will be cooked in. Place them on top of the chicken mixture in the bowl. Place in the oven and cook for about 15 minutes until the top of the biscuit is brown. Let cool about 5 minutes before serving.

CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST Ingredients 4 egg whites 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 4 slices cinnamon bread 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons powdered sugar 1/4 cup maple syrup

Cook until both sides are golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Place 2 slices of French toast on warmed individual plates. Add 1 teaspoon powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons maple syrup to each. Serve immediately.

CAREER & F INANCE

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOUR ATTITUDE: HOW TO TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Story By: Carrie Schwab Pomertanz Carrie interviews Farnoosh Torabi, CBS MoneyWatch columnist and author of “Psych Yourself Rich: Get the Mindset and Discipline You Need to Build Your Financial Life” (FT Press: 2010). CARRIE: Farnoosh, you’ve written a great book for young adults. Can you briefly explain why the proper mindset is so crucial for a young person who is just starting to build their financial life? FARNOOSH: I think it’s easy, as a young adult, to get emotionally overwhelmed, especially now with so much economic uncertainty. Many are graduating from college with heaps of student loan and credit card debt and entering an extremely competitive job market. Many are being forced to move back home with mom and dad (not so fun). Others are barely making ends meet on their own, given stagnant starting salaries. In short, being a young professional today can be quite an emotional drain. That’s where “Psych Yourself” enters the picture. It teaches us that while life has its setbacks, it also has its opportunities. Before you reach for your financial calculator, you need to get control of your emotions, think strategically, and commit to your goals. CARRIE: You talk about why it’s crucial for all of us to be our own financial advocates. Can you explain why this is important — and what it involves?

S a n J o aqu i n Wo m an

FARNOOSH: If you’re like me, you accept that no one cares more about your money and your financial livelihood than you do. And you see why it’s so critical to be your own financial advocate, protecting your assets and making the most educated decisions. This is especially critical for a young adult new to being completely on his or her own. When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to feel intimidated by the financial world. We often feel insecure about calling up our lenders or walking into our boss’s office to discuss a raise. But if you don’t ask for these things, no one will do it for you. You’ll learn (quickly) that there’s not a lot of handholding in the real world. You’ll be expected to make a lot of decisions — from picking your health care options to your 401(k) investment allocations. My advice: To earn your independence, speak up, ask questions and be heard. From your student loan officers to your landlord, human resources manager, doctor and bank agent, ask questions and follow up. CARRIE: The title of your book is pretty bold. Tell us what you mean by “rich”? Are you talking about achieving a certain dollar amount, a certain life style, or something else? FARNOOSH: Rich in my book equals financial security. It’s not about becoming a millionaire or accumulating wealth. After all, we know plenty of quantifiably “rich” people who do little to protect their assets and give into a lifestyle that is far beyond their means. To me, rich is about striking a balance between your needs and wants and having enough left over to protect you in the event of a financial emergency, like a job loss. It’s about freedom and choice. CARRIE: As you point out in your book, many of us behave irrationally when it comes to money, making foolish decisions that really aren’t in our long-term best interests. Do you have some suggestions for how we can correct that tendency and take control? FARNOOSH: Absolutely. Some of my favorite highlights from “Psych Yourself Rich” include: — Use Cash. There’s no doubt that we tend to overspend when we use credit cards. We feel a false sense of confidence and shop more impulsively. To avoid this, use cash more often. It not only limits how much you can spend, but

it also keeps you more honest. You are forced to think twice, three times about whether something is worth it and, indeed, aligned with your goals. It hurts more to part with cash than to swipe a credit card ... and that’s a good thing! — Narrow Your Options. It’s a proven behavioral fact: too many options cause confusion — whether that’s entrees on a menu or mutual funds for your 401(k). One way to deal with this phenomenon is to identify a price range you’re comfortable with and stick to it. When you’re debating over what kind of a car to buy, and you know you only want to spend $18,000 to $25,000 soup to nuts, confine yourself to just a few vehicles in that price range. Don’t cross the $25,000 threshold. Stick to your guns. When you look at cars beyond $25,000, temptation kicks in and you try to justify spending more than initially planned (or more than you can afford). — Pre-commit to Saving. Do you want to save but seem to come up dry at the end of the month? A pre-commitment to paying yourself first and saving automatically in your employer’s 401(k) plan before you get your paycheck will ensure that you save well. CARRIE: And finally, you’ve written your book for young adults, but isn’t a lot of your advice equally valid for older folks? FARNOOSH: I believe anyone at any age can benefit from practical and actionable financial advice, which is what I hope my book ultimately provides.

CAREERS & F INANCE

CAREER REINVENTION

Moving into a different field means knowing how to sell your skills, experience and yourself to land the new career Kim Burns is director of community education and training at a community college. “Our typical student is a woman in her 40s and 50s,” says Burns. Career changers enter a variety of certificate programs. Some are looking to upgrade outdated skills, but many just want to do work they enjoy more. Burns has seen students enter programs in event management after enjoying planning work events and volunteer activities. Others may want work with more-flexible schedules, especially if they’re considering retirement options or spending more time with their families. The career change may be forced upon a worker by a bottomingout industry. Some career changers move into a different career in the same industry. Beth Bates of Billerica, Mass., has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and was working for Intel as a software

engineer. The job carried a lot of responsibility and the promise of management, but it also had long hours. “I didn’t want to work every night. I wanted to come home and take care of and be with my kids,” says Bates. She enrolled in a technical-writing program and now works as an intermediate technical writer for Innovatia, doing contract writing for a company that produces networking switches and routers. A MONEY Magazine/Salary.com survey reported that almost onehalf of employers say they regularly target mid-career changers when recruiting. If you’re considering a career change, you only need to take a few steps to sell yourself and your skills – past and new – to potential employers.

Bates says many people have asked her about her career change. “I tell them it’s very scary, but I would encourage anyone considering it to go for it. There are jobs out there.” • MATURITY MATTERS. Work experience is a plus, even if it’s in another field or career. So don’t throw out your old résumé; it only needs reworking. • MEASURE SUCCESS. As with any experience, quantify what you accomplished in the past. For example, if you used to do budgeting, instead of just saying so, list how much money you saved or how large an amount you had responsibility over. • FOCUS ON SKILLS TRANSFER. Many skills in your first career transfer to your new one, so highlight those in your résumé and interviews. Bates had many skills that made her an attractive candidate as a technical writer. “I understand release cycles, deadlines and am used to dangling a lot of details,” says Bates. • PLAN AHEAD. Impulsive is fun, but making a major change requires planning ahead and will show a potential employer that you have your act together. A career change requires additional training. Many people plan a few years ahead and tuck money away so they can afford to attend a full-time program. • GET HELP. Ask someone in the new field for help to learn more about the industry; this also helps you better prepare your résumé. And turn to your local community college. “I went to a conference where someone said that community colleges are the new graduate school,” said Burns. She says they offer certificates, degrees and flexibility. And the price is right.
