I

t’s heard everywhere from little league to high school to college to the pros. Being the best – number one – also drives businesses to go the extra distance in offering products and service beyond customers’ expectations. This section is about Lodi businesses that were voted by The Record’s readers as the best in their respective categories. Also listed in the categories are businesses that are considered by you to be “One of the Best.” While strictly speaking there can only be one “Best” in each category, those who are “One of the Best” have much to be proud of as well. In many cases, there were few votes between first and second. Businesses who got any votes in the Best of Lodi Readers Poll should take pride that some of their customers took the time and made the effort to cast a vote for them. Readers registered and completed an online ballot. That takes loyalty and customers who appreciate the daily effort these businesses make to serve them. At the top of each category is the business that garnered the most votes. Listed below in order of votes received are the next one or two businesses that also received significant votes in the category. We thank all the readers who took the time to support their favorite businesses by filling out a ballot. Five readers’ ballots were drawn at random, and they received $100 gift certificates: Nick Sinclair of Lodi, Brandy Haupt of Lodi, Dora Garcia of Lodi, Estela Woods of Woodbridge, and Don Parker of Lodi. This non-scientific poll was conducted online at www.recordnet.com/bestoflodi between December 7, 2012 and January 4th, 2013 among San Joaquin readers. Questions about Best of Lodi should be directed to the Advertising Department at The Record 209-546-8351. ■

Attending Adams State College in Colorado, and graduating with a degree in biology and minors in chemistry and geology, Matt understands winemaking from the molecular level up. Returning to California, Matt began his winemaking career in the laboratory; It wasn’t until his first vintage in 1999 when he tasted the flavor transition from fruit to bottle that Matt fully caught the wine bug. Delta Eye Medical Group

D

elta Eye Medical Group was founded in 1973 by Doctors Robert Hopkins and Alan Nakanishi, both boardcertified ophthalmologists. Their founding philosophy was providing ethical, state-of-the-art, excellent medical and surgical eye care. The Group has grown and expanded to three locations in Stockton, Lodi, and Tracy by maintaining the excellence in comprehensive eye care, including cataract and LASIK surgery. Drs. Andrew Chen, Jeffrey Ing, Alan Nakanishi, and Pamela Tsuchiya are top-notch physicians in the group, recognized and respected in the community for their high-quality work and integrity. Delta Eye Medical Group is pleased to introduce the addition of another top-notch physician, Dr. Julio Narvaez. He comes to Stockton after working at Loma Linda University for nine years, both seeing patients and teaching physicians cataract, LASIK, and other advanced eye surgeries. He teaches regularly at both national and international

ophthalmology meetings. Because of the high quality of his work, he was voted by ophthalmologists in Southern California for inclusion to the very selective list of Best Doctors in America. Due to his innovation, research, and publications in eye surgery, he was promoted to the position of Professor of Ophthalmology at an unusually young age. Dr. Narvaez is not new to the area. After his residency training at Loma Linda University, he served three years at Travis Air Force Base on active duty. Next he followed his wife to Stockton for three years during her residency training in primary care at San Joaquin County Hospital. During that time he worked as an ophthalmologist in Turlock. He then obtained fellowship training in refractive and cataract surgery at the noted Emory Eye Center in Atlanta. Dr. Narvaez speaks Spanish fluently. Delta Eye Medical Group is pleased to have Dr. Narvaez join them in serving the eye care needs of the Central Valley. n

New & Again Consignment Furniture Gallery

E

ntering its 7th year as Lodi’s premiere consignment store, it’s a popular destination and its artfully decorated storefront belies the vast square footage full of consigned furniture and other items. Haley Jackson, owner of New & Again states “It’s a revolving door of inventory. Some of our customers come in every week just to see what’s new.” What she doesn’t mention is that the items for sale are extraordinarily clean, in good condition and well organized, making for a shopping experience as pleasant as any, especially considering the alluring prices. Their simple 50/50 split of the sales price with the consignors, makes for a stress free, or as they call it, “no fuss no muss” arrangement. Jackson with her interior design passion, and her father, Alan Levy, with his lifelong love of antiques, auctions, research and entrepreneurship, combined their unique talents and abilities to bring a much needed store of this kind to Lodi. They also conduct estate sales, ensuring that sellers receive top dollar for all goods to be sold. Using their experience and recordkeeping system, satisfied consignors of this service rave about the service level and efficient methods employed to liquidate estates. Their website, NewandAgainOnline. com, features easy-to-sign-up-for newsletters, merchandise photos, and

clear explanations of how the business works. After 90 days, if items are not sold or removed from the store by the consignor, they are sent to their warehouse, discounted generously and on the first weekend of every month, the warehouse opens for a furniturepalooza-type blowout sale. This event is key to making room for more incoming merchandise and is enthusiastically attended by the public. “It’s a team effort,” says Jackson, crediting her devoted staff for the work they do and the all-around success of the business. n

Henderson Bros.

H

enderson Brothers of Lodi is one of the oldest businesses in Lodi, and this year will mark their 117th anniversary. They specialize in plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and sheet metal fabrication. James McConnell is now the president of this family-owned company that has been passed down from generation to generation. Henderson Bros. is wellremembered for a now-closed hardware store that opened in 1896. Generations of area families have shopped and used Henderson Bros. There are antiques in the shop, as well as old pictures and calendars that the store had custom-made clear back to 1931. “Many customers come in and tell us stories of their grandparents that were customers, and tell us their memories and of walking next door to the old ice cream shop. I even had a customer ask if they could take a picture of our shop – they remembered it as a child,” says manager Shannon Fortner.

3RD PLACE

Since the hardware store closed, the sheet metal shop and office continues the history. The shop provides custom sheet metal fabrication for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The shop is highly specialized and provides custom, precision work on time and within budget. Whether working on gutters or downspouts, design build projects, retrofits or repairs, it’s an art. James McConnell combines top-notch service with new-wave innovation. “We have been rapidly moving in the direction of home performance by uniting building science and HVAC. The majority of the industry is unfortunately still just changing out equipment without taking a whole house approach,” says McConnell. “Henderson Bros. plumbing is a multifunctional division. We not only provide service work to homeowners, we also work on remodels, new construction, commercial buildings and wineries,” says plumbing manager Justin Powell. n

intage, antiques, shabby chic or contemporary home décor – Second Hand Rose has it all. When customers walk in they immediately appreciate the comfortable and inviting atmosphere of the store that features the timeworn and perfectly distressed pieces that are so popular. Since 1996 this family-owned business has served shoppers in San Joaquin County and beyond… there’s so much to choose from no matter what your taste is. There are 6,000 enchanting square feet to wander around in. 40 dealers display their wares, and different items come in every day. There is a fast turnaround, and always something to entice you. Chris, the vivacious owner, is known throughout the community as a hard worker, loyal friend and

sometimes singer (not!) She goes out of her way to insure a unique shopping experience by sharing her knowledge of antiques while giving great customer service with her quick wit and positive attitude. Chris has added something new to the showroom – “miss mustard seed’s milk paint.” She says people love the look of old painted furniture, and with “miss mustard seed’s milk paint” they can achieve the shabby and worn look themselves. So far it has been a big success! Second Hand Rose enjoys the honor of winning “Best Antique Store” in The Record’s Best Of San Joaquin and Best of Lodi for ten years in a row, and their dedication to customer satisfaction has warranted them accreditation with the BBB. n
