UNITED WAY OF SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CELEBRATING 90 YEARS
OF SERVICE FOR OUR COMMUNITY Thank you to all of those in our community who have supported our United Way over the past 90 years. During this time period our United Way of San Joaquin County has raised over 80 million dollars. Most of these funds have come in one dollar at a time, as they were donated by employees through our United Way workplace campaigns. These funds have been invested back into our community through our local nonprofits, thus enabling them to better serve our community’s most needy. It is because of the community’s support of our mission that we have been able to help thousands of individuals and families to live better lives. Our simple job description is “we are here to raise funds and awareness for our local nonprofits so that they are better prepared to improve the lives of people and pets in San Joaquin County.” If you would like to donate to our United Way, please contact me at aprokop@ unitedwaysjc.org. You can also call us at 209-469-6980, or you can donate online at www.unitedwaysjc.org Thank you and God Bless

UNITED WAY OF SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CELEBRATING 90 YEARS
SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 2016

Executive Director Stockton Chamber of Commerce On Friday, April 1st, The United Way of San Joaquin will be celebrating its 90th anniversary of providing muchneeded funding and support to so many residents in need through the many fine nonprofit organizations that we are blessed to have here in Stockton and San Joaquin County. The celebration will be hosted by the Record, another Stockton institution, in the Irving Martin Room. Attendees will not only be celebrating United Way as an organization, but also its supporters and volunteers, along with two long-time and valued employees whose combined years of dedicated work interestingly totals 90 years also. Those two are: Angie McKinney – 50 years, and Donna Ng – 40 years, who have dedicated their lives to not only United Way, but also the community as a whole. I am honored when the United Way President/CEO Andy Prokop AP asked me to not only write something for the insert, but also be master of ceremonies for the April 1st event! I am pleased to give to you my personal feelings of the importance, over the years and into the future, of the United Way of San Joaquin, for I have truly seen the good it does in so many areas and for so many people. In 1926 United Way started as The Community Chest. In 1942 it became the United Community War Chest, with the slogan, “Two Days of Pay Keeps the Enemy Away!” In 1952 it became the United Crusade, and in 1973 it became the United Way of San Joaquin County. As a young boy/man I remember my family not only talking about the importance of all of the above, but they also were involved personally and financially. I must admit that I really did not grasp the full meaning and importance of our and any United Way until in 1975 as an officer of the Stockton Police Department, when a life-threatening illness took me from St. Joseph’s Hospital to Stanford University Hospital. There, thanks to my family, faith, medical staffs, and a Palo Alto United Way volunteer – who appeared as an angel at my hospital room door to show me that at any time any of us could benefit from the wonders of the United Way – I was able to walk out of the Stanford Hospital a whole person, with a great deal to live for, because early on in that almost-life-ending experience, I had all but given up hope. I will not go through the details, but that life-changing event allowed me to be who I am today and started my journey with the United Way of San Joaquin, which I value very much. I met and worked with many wonderful people like Angie, Donna, former Executive Director Cy Cochran, and of course, Andy Prokop, who I consider a brother. I also was able to work with other dedicated staff members, board members, volunteers, loaned executives and the bastion of the wonderful nonprofit organizations who provide countless services to all in need. That need goes on and on, and it is important that we all invest in United Way, for as I noted above, none of us, family, friends or fellow employees are immune from a time in our life that we will need United Way in some form or fashion. Congratulations as United Way of San Joaquin begins its 91st year of service, and thank you to Angie, Donna, the United Way of San Joaquin and all the staff, volunteers and agencies that help to make life better for so many in San Joaquin County. I also invite all of you to invest your time, talent and treasure to help – so more can be done by your United Way of San Joaquin County – as Pope John Paul II stated: “You must strive to multiply bread so that it suffices for the tables of mankind.”

Andy Prokop’s 69th birthday fell on the same day as his 17th anniversary as executive director of United Way of San Joaquin County. He celebrated both recently with a potluck lunch among coworkers, an occasion observed with the same more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts spirit that fuels United Way itself. As the community agency marks 90 years of work in San Joaquin County, its supporters look back on a legacy beyond the estimated 100 million dollars United Way has raised for local nonprofit organizations. Instead, they point to the smaller investments of time, trust and funds that have added up to major community impact. “Our mission is to improve lives in San Joaquin County,” Prokop said. “United Way hasn’t done that work personally, but it’s touched those lives indirectly. Our job is to raise funds and awareness to help all nonprofits better serve this community. We’re here to help them serve the most needy.”
UNITED WAY OF SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY CELEBRATING 90 YEARS
The organization that became United Way was founded in 1926 as Community Chest, an organization established to raise money on behalf of local projects. Over the years, its priorities have changed in response to community needs. Through the 1940s, for example, Community Chest funds were directed toward the war effort with slogans like, “Two days’ pay keeps the enemy away.” Today, United Way of San Joaquin County has three primary focus areas: education, health, and financial stability and independence. Each year, the organization’s annual fund drive raises from $3 million to $4 million, largely through workplace campaigns in which employees contribute to United Way via payroll deduction. That money is then invested in local service organizations working to address some of the community’s most urgent needs. “The difference maker with United Way is that we’ve been here for 90 years, and we have earned the trust of the donor,” Prokop said. “We word hard every day to keep that trust.” Along with its 90th anniversary, United
Way is celebrating the contributions of two longtime team members: Director of Operations Donna Ng, who is marking her 40th professional anniversary, and Angie McKinney, Community Impact Consultant, who has been part of the agency for 50 years. “Donna is the mortar that keeps the bricks in place,” Prokop said. “And Angie? There’s absolutely no words to capture all the good she has done for 50 years. … There must be tens of thousands of people living lives better because of these two women.” Ng first started working for United Way as part of a summer youth employment program. She was a student at San Joaquin Delta College at the time. “I remember they told me, ‘If you do well there, they might keep you.’ It kind of evolved from there.” Most fulfilling over the past 40 years, she said, has been seeing local nonprofits evolve alongside her. Throughout the county are organizations that have grown and matured with United Way support. “You build a relationship with so many people,” Ng said.
