Stewart Binns From very humble origins in his beloved Burnley, Stewart became an earnest and starry-eyed university student – it was 1968 after all – despite being taught in a secondary modern school, which could only offer technical subjects. He studied for A-levels in woodwork, metalwork and engineering drawing during the day at school and history, geography and English in the evenings at the local college. He passed them all with flying colours in one year. He became president of his college, edited SCAN, the student newspaper, was captain of the University Challenge team, played football and squash for his university and for many years played semi-pro football. He pursued the academic heights to become a junior research fellow in behavioural sociology before deciding that universities had too many bars and squash courts to be conducive to serious study. He then dabbled in teaching, Special Forces soldiering, university examining and local politics for ten years, before a lucky break and a whiff of nepotism got him the chance to join the BBC on a 1-month contract as a junior researcher. He jumped at the opportunity, even though he was in his mid-thirties and acting head of a secondary school. Following his training in Documentary Features and Current Affairs at the BBC, where he worked on Panorama, QED and Sport and Mankind, he spent twenty years at TWI as Senior International Vice-President & Director of Special Projects, where he conceived and launched two ground-breaking international series, Trans World Sport and Futbol Mundial, both of which are still in production twenty-five years later. As the senior creative at TWI (now IMG Media), Stewart ran several production departments, staffed by over a hundred people, and managed annual budgets totalling over twenty million dollars. TWI was an overtly profit-driven organisation and Stewart became Mark McCormack’s (the founder and owner of TWI/IMG) trusted interlocutor between creative producers and hardbitten salesmen. He also undertook a two-year bridge-building exercise between TWI New York and TWI London to resolve a long-standing territorial ‘war’; peace duly ensued. Stewart pioneered TWI’s Olympic relationship, especially the establishment of OTAB, the International Olympic Committee’s film and television archive and directed the innovative Camera of Record at each Olympic Games from Lillehammer in 1994 to Athens in 2004. In partnership with the IOC, he created and produced The Olympic Series, over a hundred and fifty hours of historical programming, including Olympic Century, the IOC’s official centennial history.

Renowned for imaginative and creative storytelling, his list of definitive sports programming includes the All England Club’s official history, Wimbledon, A History of the Championships, The People’s Game, FIFA’s official history of world football and Tiger, the official biography of Tiger Woods. Stewart led TWI’s diversification into factual programming with a range of original productions, including Artworld, Fabulous Fortunes, Inventions, Century, Churchill and the

‘In Colour’ series of historical documentaries. The first ‘In Colour’, The Second World War in Colour, was included in the ‘100 Most Influential TV Programmes Ever Made’ by the UK‘s TV critics in 1999. His ‘In-Colour’ genre went on to include other multi-award winning series, ‘Britain at War’, ‘Japan’s War’, ‘Anzacs’, ‘D-Day’ and ‘Canada at War.’ Stewart is an archive specialist, not only in its use in programming but also in its sale and marketing. He established TWI Archive in 1999 and within three years, it was an integral part of TWI’s Sales Division, generating two million dollars of nett income per year. This success was achieved by developing a new approach to archive, which placed a strong emphasis on the historical brand identity of clients like the IOC, FIFA, the R&A, the ITF, the NCAA and the All England Club. Major programmes of archive acquisition, restoration and copyright retrieval led him to develop in-depth knowledge in film restoration, contract negotiation and the complexities of copyright law in many countries. He brokered several sensitive deals, including the acquisition of Olympia, Leni Reifenstahl’s controversial film of the 1936 Berlin Games and ran a very fractious court battle in Sydney on behalf of the IOC to win back the rights to the film of the 1956 Melbourne Games. In 2004, he moved to Octagon CSI to become Head of Production where he oversaw the restructuring of its production output, running his own arm of the company with its own premises, staff and budget. Again, he broke the programming mould by launching two new international football anthologies, Golazo! and The Football League Show. Stewart also widened Octagon’s content portfolio to include the factual entertainment series, What Price Fame? and Chasing Churchill, the first historical documentary to be produced in High Definition and Surround Sound. During his time at Octagon, he was also a special adviser on bidding strategy to Sebastian Coe, leader of the London bid for the Olympic Games of 2012. In 2006, Stewart formed (www.bigapemedia.com), with broad-based media company distribution, archive, client consultancy.

his own company, Big Ape Media International his wife Lucy, a media sales specialist. Big Ape Media is a involved in a range of projects in production, sales & representation, communications, event organising and

Its latest productions include Indochine, A People’s War in Colour, completed in March 2009, Korea, The Forgotten War in Colour, delivered in June 2010 to mark the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, and Seisen: The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire completed in 2011. Stewart is currently working on Games Under Threat for Discovery and a promotional film for FITA - the World Archery Federation. Stewart now spends much of his time offering his knowledge and experience as a consultant, specialising in content management and origination, creative thinking and innovation and in building bridges between the former glories of ‘traditional’ media and the wonderful but overwhelming innovations of ‘new’ media. Recent consultancies have included: Salzburg 2014 Olympic Winter Games Bid, Board of Control of Cricket for India, Powerboat P1, Rio 2016 Olympic Games Bid, Crystal CG China, Mission Hills Group China, Honav China, The Re:fine Group of Companies, Women’s Squash Association, World Squash Federation and Sport England, Bradesco Bank, Volvo Ocean Race.

Stewart has been awarded a BAFTA, four RTS awards, a Grierson and a Peabody among over thirty international awards. He has been elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, conducts seminars and works as a mentor at several universities and is Visiting Professor in Business Affairs at the University of Bedfordshire. For many years, he was a member of the IOC’s Marketing Commission and is often called upon to speak on topics as diverse as programme-making, marketing communications, brand development, creative writing and archive/content management. He has travelled to over 100 countries, lived and worked in New York, Tokyo and Sydney, but insists that Burnley is still the most sophisticated place he’s ever seen! As the owner of a 14th century house in Somerset and a 16th century house in South West France, he has an obvious passion for old buildings and their restoration. He is an active member of the Historic Houses Association, The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Vernacular Architecture Group. His early training in craft skills still come in useful; he does all his own woodworking, bricklaying, tiling, plumbing and electrics. He is an ardent amateur archaeologist, a strident fan of medieval music and an opinionated columnist in the match-day programme for Burnley Football Club. He is a self-educated windbag on many subjects including church architecture, obscure languages, American history, tribal masks, modern Japanese history, cinema, Indochina, folk sports, real ale, malt whisky, claret, the history of the Clarets (Burnley Football Club of course) and military history. Stewart’s liberal tendencies still smoulder and he has been a member of the Reform Club for twenty-five years. He is also a member of BAFTA, the Royal Television Society, The Special Forces Club, The Artists Rifles Regimental Association, The SAS Regimental Association and the Royal Society of Arts. An author of several books, including Britain at War, America’s War, The British Empire in Colour and The Greatest, his first novel, Conquest, an epic adventure set in the 11th century, was published by Penguin in February 2011 and quickly became one of the best selling historical fiction books of the year. Crusade, is the sequel to Conquest and will be published by Penguin in April 2012. The third novel in the series, is due for completion in September 2012 and will be published in 2013. Stewart lives in Somerset with his wife Lucy and twin boys Charlie and Jack. For further information on Stewart go to www.stewartbinns.com

Competition One 1072 - England is firmly under the heel of its new Norman rulers. The few survivors of the English resistance look to Edgar the Atheling, the rightful heir to the English throne, to overthrow William the Conqueror. Years of intrigue and vicious civil war follow: brother against brother, family against family, friend against friend. In the face of chaos and death, Edgar and his allies form a secret brotherhood, pledging to fight for justice and freedom wherever they are denied. But soon they are called to fight for an even greater cause: the plight of the Holy Land. Embarking on the epic First Crusade to recapture Jerusalem, together they will participate in some of the cruellest battles the world has ever known, the savage Siege of Antioch and the brutal Fall of Jerusalem, and together they will fight to the death.

I have 5 copies of this excellent book in the 1st of this month’s competitions to send to the lucky winners. All you have to do is read the previous few pages and answer the following question.

Where does Stewart insist is the most sophisticated place he has ever seen? Send your answer along with your full postal address to: thereenactor@btinternet.com

Richard Delingpole Front to Back Series. The Front to Back series has occupied me now for nearly two years. It is the result of my two main interests in life coming together: Art and Re-enactment. Personal History I’ve been an artist all my life, having wound up with an MA in Fine Art from the University of Ulster in 1991. After Art College came the years of struggle, during which time I moved from Belfast to Bristol to London and fell into graphic design to earn a crust. After 8 years in London, by now with a family, I moved to my birthplace, Worcester where in 2001 I attended the Sealed Knot’s 350th Anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Worcester. This was purely out of pride in my new home and an interest in it’s History, but my life took a very interesting turn that day. Much to my wife’s horror I signed the “if you’re interested in joining” book in the recruitment tent. It wasn’t that the battle had been that impressive - in fact after the initial march on it was pretty dull to watch. But it looked like a heck of a lot of fun. Re-enactment History The following January I found myself on a wet field in Nantwich being ordered to “charge my pike” at some grizzled looking Royalists on the other side of the field. Nothing beats that first engagement. I genuinely feared for my life. I was sure I wasn’t supposed to be in the front rank... surely some mistake... was it too late to change my mind? Then Crunch! I was face to face with the aforementioned grizzled pikemen who grinned at me and my comrades and said “or-roit mate?” And I was hooked. After a couple of years of crushed ribs I became a musketeer and experienced the joy of gunpowder. By this time I was learning fast about re-enactment. I’d attended a multi-period event at Detling and seen how broad the hobby was. I’d also met a bunch of fellow reenactors living and drinking in Worcester, and started to have a hankering for the Napoleonic period. A certain friend who will remain nameless, but who has a dog food named after him, coerced me into joining a French Voltigeur regiment. I was quite happy with this arrangement, as nothing quite compares to the French Napoleonic uniform, especially the elite units with their plumes, sabre briquets and epaulettes. All of this seems so long ago now, and I have been in four different Napoleonic units, two of them British and two of them French. I’ve taken part in Napoleonic battles in Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, The Czech Republic and the Netherlands. I’ve had an amazing time, and met some amazing people along the way. Painting All this time I’d forgotten that I’d set out in life to be an artist. It’s not that I hadn’t painted at all, just that I hadn’t been inspired to paint anything in particular. I’d paint largely about myself, but that had been of interest to nobody, particularly. It certainly wasn’t commercial. But then, one day, on Facebook in fact, I had a bit of a eureka moment. Some friends in the 44th regt of foot had been assembling their regiment’s uniforms through the ages, and at a multi-period event had posed a few of their members in these uniforms and taken photos. I asked if I could have one of the photos to do a painting. The chap I painted was in the

uniform from the French Indian Wars and they’d photographed him front and back and I thought this would be a sensible format to do the painting in, as a great deal of what is interesting about a soldier in uniform is what he carries behind him. So I did the painting and broke with my usual style in several key ways: I was painting in watercolour, on paper, at a small size. An artist friend had recently suggested that the only way artists can earn money these days was through prints. I was doing five-foot high oils on canvas, so this was a huge change of direction for me. But I found it suited me very well. Using solid pans I found setup time was minimal, and I could sit down to an hour’s painting every evening with minimal fuss. I derived a great deal of satisfaction from that first painting, and the reaction from my fellow re-enactors was very encouraging. So I moved on to an old subject: myself. I was my own readily available model, and photographed myself in kit, front and back, and did the painting. I then painted my 14-year-old son in his drummer-boy uniform and bearskin. By now I was on a roll, and starting to branch out to other periods. That group of fellow reenactors in Worcester I’d met 10 years ago had evolved into Worcester Re-enactors, with me now the Chairman. We’d staged several successful shows in Worcester and I had access to many, many different uniforms. So I did a Medieval billman, a friend’s 16-year-old son as a WWII GI, an officer of the 95th Rifles. By now I’d found a place that was doing an amazing job of printing my paintings onto watercolour paper, in such detail that the prints are indistinguishable from the originals. The prints are known as ‘giclee’ (pronounced “geeclay”) prints, and are essentially ultra-high-quality inkjet prints using an 8-colour ink process. Not cheap, but certainly high-quality. So I am now on a kind of quest to paint as many re-enactors in uniform as possible. My criteria has been largely unchanged but this is what I look for in a subject: • Interesting uniform • Authentic and high-quality (to the best of the knowledge of the wearer) • A plausibly-aged subject (not too old!) • A plausibly-built subject (not too fat!) • Relaxed posed The paintings take up an area the equivalent of a piece of A4 paper, on an A3 piece of paper. The detail is dependent on the quality of the original photography I take. This normally requires a “000” size brush, working in a well-lit studio. I don’t use white paint, and work with high quality solid pan watercolours, occasionally using stopping-out fluid where areas need to remain bright white (buttons, links on a chain etc.). I go to great lengths to make the colours as close to the originals as possible, using actual items of clothing where possible. For periods outside my knowledge I have to rely on the subject to tell me what should be changed, if anything. A seam here, a pleat there, an incorrect button, badge or absence of. Generally I just use people I trust, as these paintings take anything from 15 to 27 hours to paint, depending on complexity. Having recently painted several WWII subjects I’m now doing someone from the Lace Wars. The driving force is not what will be commercial but what keeps me and therefore the viewer interested. With a combination of multi-period events and Facebook I could now pick and choose my subject, and I’m certainly not running out of models. With 12 paintings under my belt already I’m really just starting, but there are huge gaps in my collection both geographical and temporal. The deal I make with my models is that they get a print at cost price. They need to fit the criteria laid out above and sign away their model’s rights as part of

the deal. I’m certainly not going to retire on what I’m currently selling, but then I’m not exactly going for the hard sell as the prints currently come under the same heading as reenactment: “For pleasure”. There are some amazing historic painters out there whose work I really admire. Don Troiani and Mark Churms are two that spring to mind. But with my inspiration with the Front to Back series is the Osprey artists, who are essentially illustrators, offering primarily detail and information ahead of style and character. Ideally the desire to provided detail creates a style all of its own. In time I intend to paint scenes, involving two or more figures, with backgrounds, but for the time being I’m not stopping with the current format. I feel I’m improving with each painting, and there are still hundreds of uniforms out there I’d love to paint. If you think you fit the bill, please get in touch. HER HIGHNESS, THE TRAITOR BY SUSAN HIGGINBOTHAM

This is not the story of the nine-day Queen, Lady Jane Grey, but of her family, her husband Guildford Dudley’s family, and how they were affected by King Edward VI’s device for the succession. It is told from the points of view of Lady Jane Dudley and Lady Frances Grey, the mothers of the would-be ruling couple. Here the infamous Duke of Northumberland, John Dudley, becomes a devoted and attentive husband; he is a firm leader for England and peaceful about meeting his gruesome end. Lady Frances becomes not a mean, ambitious mother, but a woman who loved but could not relate to her intelligent teenage daughter, Jane. The story begins with Henry VIII’s death and recaps all of the classic anecdotes from this time: Katherine Parr’s shocking remarriage and death, Lady Mary Tudor’s failed attempt to escape England and her imagined religious persecution, and the feud between Northumberland and Somerset, resulting in Somerset’s demise against the English population’s wishes – all leading up to Edward VI’s plans to make his Protestant cousin Jane the queen of England. But it also provides the stories behind the stories, told from the fresh perspectives of the mothers involved. Along with historical accuracy, a swift-moving plot and little family details that any mother would remember and treasure, such as Lady Dudley’s talking parrot and Lady Grey’s dismay at her daughter’s surprising lack of common sense, the novel includes characterizations at which this author excels. She takes the infamous villains of history and presents them as relatable human characters. This book at times made me smile and then cry with the tragedy. I very much recommend it.
