Greetings All The season is mostly over here in the UK with just mainly trading events to wander around and spend some of our hard earned money. This year hasn’t been great due to the very poor weather with quite a few events being cancelled including very recently the Battle of Hastings which could only manage the Saturday.

Paradigm of Reenactment: Concerning Problems
If you do not change the direction of your movement, you will certainly get to the point. Proverb
A terrible, incomprehensible word, which arouses only associations concerning university, textbooks and wicked professors. Philosophical, linguistic, political paradigms… Educated people like to argue about them, while we, usual mortals can only try to understand at least something in their endless debates, full of incomprehensible terms and logical connections. But if you want, you can understand anything, there’s really nothing complicated about the concept of a paradigm. In fact, the paradigm is a common and generally accepted knowledge concerning any sphere (no matter what), which determines the main areas of activity, the basic vision of a certain sphere of life, occupation, science, etc., outlining the range of issues to be studied. Roughly speaking, the paradigm is a direction of movement in the broadest sense that takes into account an outlook, range of key issues to be dealt with, basic ideas and postulates. What does it have in common with reenactment, you may ask? They are directly connected. Reenactment is actually a very specific sphere of activity, which, first, affects a variety of aspects of a particular person’s life, and second, is at the intersection of science, hobby, sports, and some other things, depending on the number of intersecting lines needed to a person to create an intersection.
It is important to understand the concept of paradigm in order to be able to go beyond its limits. After all, any rules are created to be broken, even this one. The paradigm in the reenactment explains the right course of development and understanding what to do, it sets the tone. That means, all take the same way: study of the sources, manufacturing of a kit, participation in festivals. All people understand the definition of the historicity of things or a right SAW approximately in the same way. Some do it better, some do it worse, but the general direction is approximately the same. And it’s the same because it is considered the most effective one. But in addition to the directions for action, the paradigm gives solutions to the possible problems, and thus establishes certain limits. For example, an experienced reenactor will not have an idea to make shoulder pads for his SAW if they weren’t used in historical analogues, even if his shoulders are unprotected. Of course, some people do such things, but for protection and in terms of sport, the HMB. But the reenactment does not accept it. If certain things or elements weren’t used in the past, it’s not worth to devise them, even though some might find it an interesting way to solve a problem. But the paradigm of reenactment rejects this method. You cannot invent something that was never in use, even if you want it to exist. The paradigm, in addition to setting the basic tone of activity, also provokes its major problems.
One of the most important problems of the modern reenactment is that everyone is his own master. Everyone does as he likes, there is no basis (i.e., the basic knowledge, which is known to all, and the methodology of the study), the work is conducted in an arbitrary direction at an arbitrary rate, and exchange of experience is absolutely chaotic. You may be lucky to find someone experienced on a forum or can make your own scientific discovery. Although it may be known to everyone, sometimes it can serve as a preventive measure. Just to be on the safe side and not to forget it. And the worst thing in the reenactment is that knowledge is not summarized, no books are written, which could help novices to get the truth. Of course, we all rely on history textbooks, and believe it’s enough for us, but in reality it is not true. The reenactment can and should help the development of science (first of all history), but this help is spontaneous and short-lived without the consolidation of knowledge. Imagine that archeology, as an integral part of academic history, exists without its methodological basis and literature. In such a case everyone would dig where they want and treat the samples and knowledge according to an approach known exclusively to them (and created right on the spot). Probably, such archeology would cause only harm, and bring no benefits. The same is with the reenactment: everyone works for themselves, and knowledge we share become lost and then should be discovered by others.
The same applies to the historical medieval battle, although to a lesser extent. Everyone trains as they want. Still, the progress is a little better here, because it can be seen at once who is stronger, though if we deal with sewing clothes, it’s not easy to find whose seams are better. And it hurts more when you are beaten at a tournament, rather than when your dress is made according to a wrong pattern. Therefore, the development of methods is faster in the HMB, experience is taken from other martial arts, which help to create the normative base, which in its turn will help to develop the sport even more effectively in the future. The second problem, which is inextricably connected with the first one, is the one-sided view concerning certain things. Often, when a re-enactor has no degree in history (and it’s quite a usual thing), he reads a book on a given topic (which is a good idea, in principle, as often people limit themselves to watching pictures on forums) and turns to work. He makes a SAW and then others tell certain points are wrong, although that people can also be wrong. But why does it happen? Because the person was too lazy to read a dozen books. And what did you think? Any author represents his personal opinion, so if you rely only on one source, you’ll never find the truth. And even if it gives right information, you have to read some other, to understand all the subtleties. For example, all re-enactors dealing with Mongols know that many things in the works of Gorelik should be treated with some if not criticism then with additional attention, at least. And yet they take his drawings and theoretical basis and begin to manufacture their kits. And so it turns that the plates of composite shin protection (as some believe) and the knee guards with brass plates from Tuva become used to protect shoulders. Gorelik may be right or wrong, after all, very few people come to the idea to count the number of plates of shoulder pads, and transform them in something like a shoulder pad, at least in their minds, analyze the sizes and visual sources (just try it and you’ll come to interesting conclusions.) So, if the current paradigm of the re-enactment leads to such problems (they arise because of those engaged in the reenactment), why not to change it? Probably, it would help, but it is almost impossible to change it. As theorists of philosophy say, the choice of arguments in favor of one theory or another will always depend on the values of a group of people during their interaction with the experimental data. There is no algorithm of theory, a system of measures or procedures selection that would lead each member of a group of people to the same decision or conclusion. The paradigm has been chosen because it happened so historically, because this is the phase of the reenactment development. But if we see problems, then it’s necessary to think how to solve them. International projects, which appear in the reenactment, begin to help to consolidate its knowledge and guide it in a certain direction. That’s why, many do not like them, because they set limits, but nevertheless, they create some common purpose and point at the ways of its achievement. This is the globalization of development, which will benefit the movement. And the problem of one-sided views can be solved when the reenactment will be closer to the education, will become more academic. When the reenactment will become a standard practice in the universities at the departments of history, when it will be perceived as a very important aspect of the study of history, then SAW will be made by all the rules of writing
diploma thesis, outstanding achievements will be publicized in scientific books, and upon detection of drawbacks in the knowledge of reenactors they will be immediately told what, where and how to study. It’s a long process, but we should move in this direction. And everyone is responsible how fast we’ll have a brighter future. The main principle is to move... Competition One
Hunter's Rage, by Michael Arnold. Posted to the hostile territory of Dartmoor, Captain Innocent Stryker and his men are attacked by an elite cavalry unit commanded by the formidable Colonel Gabriel Wild and suffer heavy losses. Stryker has already clashed once with Wild, and the Roundhead has sworn to seek his revenge. After the attack, Stryker is faced with the annihilation of his company as he is hounded across the moor, eventually seeking shelter on an isolated tor populated by an enigmatic former priest who harbours no love for the King's cause. Colonel Wild is assisted in his revenge by Osmyn Hogg, Parliamentarian Witchfinder, who shares his own deadly history with Stryker. To save his honour and his life, Stryker must lead his men to glory from the protection of the lonely granite-topped hill. Into this atmosphere of intrigue and danger comes the beautiful but mysterious Cecily Cade. Stryker comes to her aid, unaware that she carries with her special knowledge that may prove the key to Royalist victory. The battle between Stryker and his old foes takes him from the bleak isolation of Dartmoor, through the war-ravaged lands of southern England and finally to Stratton, where the bloody battle between Cornwall and Devon will decide the fate of the south-west.

Obsequies of Eximen of Foces, 1262-2012 A different kind of re-enactment Historical re-enactment is usually based in the ancient military world. Battles, jousts and parades, are the most common acts in a re-enactment. There was a debate in Spain last year, 2011, about this “problem”. The result was the creation of a Facebook group named 14m (14th march) in which we started to talk about civil re-enactment, and its future. Military re-enactment is, perhaps, the “father” of re-enactment itself, considering the fact that the first mass re-enactments took place in the U.S in the beginning of the XX century, set in the American Civil War. Since then, re-enactors looked at the great annual or bi-annual calendar dates such as Hastings, Grunwald, Tewkesbury or Grolle. All of them, perhaps, are based around a mass battle, siege of skirmish of any kind, involving a large group of reenactors playing military roles. But, the meaning of the world “play” not generally encompasses theatrical or “historical living role play”. Many of us started in the re-enactment thinking we could live one, two or all days that are as men and women of the XIII, XVI, II, or other centuries. Living this history has to mean thinking like men of the past, talking like them, and showing the public, or to the rest of the re-enactors, things that were and are not now, which are part of their own history. “A social history”. In the academic world, historians long debated in the mid XX century against this particular type of writing history: the “historie evènémentielle” or history of the facts, a school that initiated in the XIX century with German historians as Mommsen or Leopold von Ranke. Sadly, this kind of history, largely depreciated, still present in novels, movies and outreach materials. Coupled with this trend is the new military history, with popular publications such as Osprey publishing lines, with regional versions as the Spanish editorial Almena. In this kind of books, as it’s obvious, we can think about history as a succession of battles, betrayals and political maneouvers. A list of warriors, kings, dynasties and “national heroes”. But, is this history? No. History is much more. History means the lives of the people, their thoughts, beliefs, dreams, aspirations… The historical re-enactment has to think in new horizons, new objectives. Just imagine you are a visitor in a castle, you are expecting to see some rooms, furniture and decorations. But now, you can see the lord changing his clothes in his cabin, assisted by a servant, cookery, the room of the household chancellor full of scrolls and codexs, the lady listening to the songs of a bard, women sewing, the guard training, the local priest attending to his prayers and preparing a mass, etc. This is only just a simple idea, because we can reenact any aspect of the lives of our predecessors: a cattle faire, the live in a Benedictine monastery, a roman villa, the court of a king… Possibilities are big. Just, we’ve to think in the concept “fun” in re-enactment, not just fighting in full armour and camping with friends, but in fulfilling an historical role that we could design. It’s not funny or fascinating to reenact a squire who loves to sing and is always searching for troubles or girls? It’s not funny to re-enact a simple peasant turn soldier, swashbuckler, coward and thief? Can’t be fascinating to play an intellectual like Maquiaveli conspiring in the shadow of a great lord? People that assist to a re-enactment usually want to see history in the living. What we can offer to them? In the last term, we can do it just for our fun, as a hobby. We can’t all be honourable knights and virtuous ladies. History is also made with peasants, priests, goliards, whores, thieves and beggars. The greatness of a king can’t be appreciated if he doesn’t have poor to feed. That’s why we thought about it. Re-enactment as presenting a picture, a complete landscape with nobles and paupers, with abbots and novices, knights and levy. That’s what people are
hoping to see. Not just 100 elite soldiers, or 100 heroes. 100 persons of a particular historical period. Preparing Eximen of Foces obsequies With this ideas in mind, the Spanish reenactment group Feudorum Domini started to prepare a very special event in a village near Huesca, Aragon. The objective was to reenact a XIII century burial in the transitional romanesque-gothic church of San Miguel de Foces, a jewel of the Spanish Romanesque. The first was the documentation. San Miguel de Foces is a solitary church in the middle of the countryside, 2 km away of the small town of Ibieca. In the XIII century was the seat of the powerful house of Foces. One of the most important members of the family, Eximen of Foces, was an attorney general of the kingdom of Valencia, and companion of the aragonite king Jaime I in the conquest of Mallorca. He and his descendants were buried at the church of San Miguel, given to the Knights Hospitaller in 1259. Eximen died circa 1262, and his son, Atho, inherited his titles after him. The prosperous town of Foces decayed in the XIV century, and the Black Death annihilated its population. The town disappeared, but the church remained, containing the corpses and part of the story of the Foces family. The work of Feudorum Domini, as always, was great. Amongst their members, they’re reputed documentarians and history teachers. They began to prepare all the artifacts involving the obsequies and burial, as the catafalque or the processional cross. They selected also the re-enactors with strict criteria attending not just their material but their compromise with this kind of re-enactment. Civil aspects were highly appreciated, and chainmail and swords stayed at home. Myself, with my group S.A: Unusual Re-enactment, commenced to prepare all the religious liturgies in the three-day re-enactment, along with proposing a number of theatrics, historical situations, vocabulary and “historical role play” aspects. With great enthusiasm, 70 re-enactors travelled to a remote village in the Spanish territory. The re-enactment Enrique of Zaragoza is a Benedictine monk, with a single bald hampered by a tonsure. He’s also the “secretary of latin letters” of the house of Foces (Picture: front cover). He’s writing in his scriptorium, in the tent of his lord, a singular list, containing the prices of bordello of an Italian mistress, Genara della Crocce, who travelled alongside his pimp and administrator. Outside the tent, a Templar sergeant is talking to the lord Atho of Foces, in old Spanish tongue, about the challenge against Assalit of Gudal, sergeant-of-arms of the house, because some insults. Women are sewing under a sunshade, and a Castilian nobleman is praying in the chapel-tent, where an hospitaller chaplain is talking with a Franciscan friar. The guard of the house of Foces is watching over two men that are playing “alquerque”, a very popular board game of the XIII century.

A group of servants of the lord, using just historical tools and local materials, are building a rustic hut in the field near the church of San Miguel (photo on contents page). They sing in Catalan. For three days, re-enactors could live scenes like that, scenes full of magic and a sense of historical immersion. They were conversations in old Spanish, prayers, thieves that were pilloried, crafts with leather or chainmail, etc. The re-enactment started on Friday 24th august, but the year re-enacted was 1262.
Receiving his last rites (Photo by Luis Sorando) Eximen of Foces was dying, and the re-enactors gathered for the first central act of the program: the extreme unction. A bell indicated the priest and his retinue approached from the church, guarding the holy sacrament inside a pyx. With the processional cross in advance, the viaticum reached the tent of the lord Eximen, laying in his bed. People knelt after the sacrament, and the priest, the Franciscan known as friar Ordoño of Liébana, stepped to the entrance. He’s vested with a surplice, and a purple stola and maniple. Teresa of Aragon, the wife of Eximen, exits the tent and knelt after the sacret host, with her husband's baptismal candle in hand. “Pax huic dómui”, said the priest. “Et omnibus habitantibus in ea” replied here. The priest then entered the tent, and with him, Miguel Pedro Bartolomeus, the hospitaller clerk, and a the parishioner Roger of Outremer, who approaches to the sick for making him kiss the processional cross. Inside the tent it’s the family of Eximen: his son, Atho, with his bride, Teresa and Enrique of Saragossa, who watch in silence. The only light is the light of the candles. Bartolomeus performs the asperges, chanting in Gregorian, and the priest makes the first prayer for the soul and the flesh of Eximen. He asks for confession, and Ordoño rings the bell. The family then leaves the tent, but remains nearby, listening with concern: he’s going to change the testament. Eximen discharges his soul of all sins. He had many lovers, and children with them. He wants to be sure that they will be fine when he leaves. The friar then forbids his sins, and his family came back into the tent. The rite of the unction is made, and the oil of the sick is administrated in his forehead, ears, eyelids, lips, hands and feet. All of them pray for the healing of Eximen, but the end is near. The priest and his vicar leave the tent, and bury the sanctified oil, water, bread and cloth in the ground, with the aid of two servants of the house of Foces, and their shovels. Eximen wants to change his testament, and calls Enrique de Zaragoza, for reading it, making the corrections. After that, he gives his soul to god, and his son closes his eyes. The priest certifies the dead, and blows out his baptismal
candle. The hunting horns of the lord Eximen begin to chant, and his death is proclaimed. The body is now to be embalmed. After the unction, living history reached a peak in the conversations of Friday night, at the dinner, with philosophical argumentations, servants eating sitting in the ground, music and a discussion between the sergeant Assalit and the Templar Saguardia for some insults, after the sergeant was caught with Genara della Crocce… without paying! Saturday 25th was the great day, and began well. Chants in the chapel, the guards patrolling the camp, the women sewing and the thieves… stealing. One of the servants of the new lord Atho was caught robbing his father’s tent, and sentenced to the trap.
Photos by JM Gali The peasant woman Guacimar del Campo made fun of him, throwing lettuces at his head. At last, the lord pardons him, with a promise. Short after that, a knight of Santiago argues with a soldier about cheating in the game. The peace is restored in all case. After that, Atho and his mother sat in his father’s tent, escorted by the guard. Particulars came then to offer their condolences. Amongst them, they were some high born families as the Montcada, a commander of the Order of Santiago or the ambassador of the king of Castile, Alfonso X. Also, his own servants want to give their respects, and swear allegiance to the new lord. The new Lord, Photo by Luis Sorando
After eating lunch, preparations for the obsequies of Eximen began. The re-enactors travelled to Ibieca, 2 km away, and prepared for the burial procession, guarding the same order as depicted in XIII century Spanish manuscripts as the Cantigas of Santa Maria. The entourage went to XVI century courtyard where the catafalque was kept. Four re-enactors put it on their shoulders, and the proper ritual began. Sergeant Assalit approached to his lord and said “It’s ten days from now that we are searching my lord Eximen of Foces, and don’t found it. Do you know where he is?” Atho puts his hand over the coffin and say: “He is dead. See him here”.
Photo by Luis Sorando Horns returned to blow, dogs barked and women re-enactors started to cry. The three clerks kneel and began to pray. Residents and visitors to Ibieca watched in silence, impressed. The burial procession started a 2 km march from the town to the church of San Miguel. The Hospitaller chaplain sang his Gregorian Chants, after the processional cross and two kids holding his candles. Clerks marched secondly, and before them, the knights of the military orders. Two horses rode then, the one, of the lord Eximen, is empty (Picture on Page 3). The other, is mounted by one of his bannermen, in full armour. Behind him, the catafalque escorted by four men-at-arms, with the shields of the house of Foces hanging upside down. Following the march, Atho, his widow mother and the other civilians and re-enactors. A hundred of visitors followed the re-enactors in this long, dusty march. The sun sets when they arrive at the church, and the catafalque stops. The men-at-arms give three laps around it, and it drop their shields and brake them in the ground, with hands, feet and swords. This was called “correr les armes”. The clergy enters in the church, only illuminated by candles, and prepare for the rite with the proper garments. Men occupy the right side of the church, and women the left. There is no bench, as it was in the XIII century. The rite of the obsequies begin, spoken in Latin, and followed by Gregorian chants. A sermon is made, about the life and death, about the judge of the souls and living the life in a Christian way. It’s asked then to Atho to orders his servants put the catafalque in the right side of the church, under the historical conserved sepulchers of Atho and his wife. The people leave the church, but four of us stay: the Franciscan, the hospitaller, the mistress and the servant. They sing together, and then embrace together. It’s a moment of great emotion. We have done it. Something that some people thought would be impossible. The first civil re-enactment in Spain!
Sunday morning, the final acts were made, and the re-enactment comes to its end. First of all, it was a baptism, ordered by Atho fulfilling the last wills of his father. A baptism of a Moorish servant known as Zuleyma Bakr, who embraces the Christian faith as Maria of Foces, and a new candle is lit. Then, we visit the church, with a professional guide, who tells us about the impressive well-preserved pictures inside. Outside the church, the final act of the re-enactment started: a tournament in honour of the new lord. This is not a tournament as we can usually see in other Spanish re-enactments: the lord Atho and his wife watch it, and the sergeant-of-arms conduct as speaker. The fighters make a lot of dialogues, and develop their characters. After fighting in a theatrical combat with strict security rules, Templar sergeant Saguardia wins. But before the prize is presented to him, he asks the lord for resolving his affaire with Assalit of Gudal. A judicial combat followed, and Assalit died after a brave fight. Atho of Foces presents the prize, but laments the dead of his servant. Live and death were very close in 1262 at San Miguel de Foces, in the kingdom of Aragon. Competition two Fresh from their victory in Germania, Marcus Aquila and the Tungrians have been sent to Dacia, on the north eastern edge of the Roman Empire, with the mission to safeguard a major source of imperial power. The mines of Alburnus Major contain enough gold to pave the road to Rome. They would make a mighty prize for the marauding Sarmatae tribesmen who threaten the province, and the outnumbered auxiliaries are entrusted with their safety in the face of a barbarian invasion. Beset by both the Sarmatian horde and more subtle threats offered by men who should be their comrades, the Tungrians must also come to terms with the danger posed by a new and unexpected enemy. They will have to fight to the death to save the honour of the empire - and their own skins.
I have 2 copies of this excellent book to give away in the 2nd of this month’s competitions. Question: At which university did Anthony take a degree in Military Studies?
Visit: http://www.anthonyriches.com/ to find the answer. You can also find out more about Anthony in the interview I conducted with him, which is published in this magazine.
Send your answer along with your full postal address to me at the following email address: thereenactor@btinternet.com This competition runs until November 24th 2012 at which time I will pick the winner at random and have the books sent to them.
An interview with Anthony Riches 1. Hi Mr Riches. Thanks for accepting my interview and welcome to “The ReEnactor”. Tell us something about you. Who is Anthony Riches? What are your strengths and your weaknesses. I’m a fifty year old Project Management consultant who also happens to write the occasional historical novel. I’m married with three children, 25, 23 and 15 years old, and I live in the northern suburbs of London. Strengths? I never panic, no matter how bad the situation gets, I’m very level headed and I have a strong work ethic. Weaknesses? A penchant for German sports cars, high powered firearms and expensive watches! 2. Tell us something about your background, your studies, your childhood. I was born in Derby (in the English Midlands) in 1961, and moved to Worthing (on the south coast) with my parents in 1967, where I lived until I left for university in 1980. I had a happy childhood, despite the absence of brothers and sisters. My father was an older parent, having fought in the Second World War, and it was through talking to him about the war that my deep interest in military history and psychology was sparked. Some children obsess about dinosaurs in those formative years (like my oldest son did), or footballers (like my youngest son did), but with me it was military equipment of all nations and eras. This early interest blossomed into a deep interest in history, and I went off to Manchester to study for a degree in Military Studies, Russian and American Studies, a horrendous course where the arts faculty punished anyone right wing enough to show an interest in the army by making us take 50% more courses than an ordinary student. The Russian studies lecturers were decent normal people, the American studies lecturers were deeply left wing and viewed us with considerable suspicion as a bunch of would be babykillers (remember, this was less than 10 years after the end of the Vietnam War). This of course served to unite us in kicking against the pricks, useful experience for later life. Having tried to write a thriller during the late 80’s and early 90’s, in 1996 I went to Housesteads, the amazing remains of an auxiliary cohort’s fort on Hadrian’s Wall, and was struck by what must have been the harsh realities of life on the wall in the second century. The rain was horizontal, and for a Roman boy posted to Britannia, I realised, this would have been the equivalent of the Eastern Front! Six months later the first draft of ‘Empire, la spada, l’onore’ was complete, although probably not ready to publish at that point. It was too academic, I suspect with the benefits of hindsight Since 1999 I’ve been a contract project manager, going where the jobs are (and preferably where the money is good), and in the last ten years I’ve managed a succession of business change projects all over the world, in Asia, Latin America, Australia, Africa and Europe. For a while that was enough, it seemed, to sublimate my need to write, until that is, a fateful day in late 2007. Working in Belfast, I chanced upon a man with several (quite good) self-published books, and when I mentioned ‘Empire, la spada, l’onore’ he asked to see the manuscript to see if he thought it was
good enough to be self-published. The next time I saw him he told me not to selfpublish, but to send the book to some agents and publishers. Choosing six agents, on the highly scientific grounds that all would read historical fiction and take proposals and submissions by email, I was delighted to get the one I really wanted – Robin Wade of RWLA – and then to end up with an offer from Hodder and Stoughton. The Empire series had a publisher…
3. When did you first know that you wanted to be a writer? Which is the moment when you realized that the passion of writing was turning into a real job? It isn’t really a job for me, since I still work full time, it’s more of a hobby. When did I realise I wanted to write? In the late 1980’s, when I drove my young wife mad by retreating to write every night once the children were settled down for the night. When did I realise it was getting serious? Standing in a cornfield in Southern Germany listening to my agent outline the terms of my first publishing deal, I suppose. An amazing moment for any author, and made a little surreal by my location (I’d gone for a walk in the autumn sunshine since it was such a nice evening). 4. Who are some of your favourite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing? The writers whose work I look out for with excited expectation are Iain M Banks (SF), Richard K Morgan (SF), Christian Cameron (historical fiction), Joe Abercrombie (fantasy) and Lee Childs (thrillers). Strange tastes for a historical fiction writer? I just like what I like, I guess! And the most influential? A thriller writer from the second half of the 20th century called Adam Hall – stripped down, gritty and exciting, the way I hope to write. 5. What inspired you to write the Marcus Valerius Aquila’s series? That magical moment on Hadrian’s Wall in freezing horizontal rain (in August!) with two small children staring at me in disbelief that I was subjecting them to the experience, I guess. I was suddenly looking at the place with a Roman’s eyes… 6. How many books are planned for Marcus Valerius Aquila’s series? Twenty five. We’re going all the way from 182ad to the death of Septimius Severus in 211ad, in York (northern Britannia). 7. Why did you set the series in Ancient Rome ? What kind of research was involved? The ‘why’ is pretty obvious, I guess. And research? Well, my degree was partially about ancient warfare, and I read a lot. And there’s so much good stuff on the internet, I’m never at a loss for a fact. 8. Your novel, Wounds of Honour, the first of the series, is now released in Italy with Newton Compton Publisher. Could you talk about it?
There are now five books in the series published in the UK. Wounds of Honour is the story of a senator’s son whose father knows that he is about to be executed on a false charge of treason, and sends his son, a Praetorian centurion, away to Britannia in order to have his bloodline continue. Marcus must fight to survive, firstly to find his place in the hostile environment of an auxiliary cohort, and then in a vicious war with the barbarians from beyond Rome’s northern frontier. 8. Can you sum up your book? Son of privilege forced to fight for survival in the middle of a tribal revolt in Britannia, all the time dreaming of vengeance on his father’s killers. How’s that?
9. What is/are your favourite scene(s) in Wounds of Honour? The moment late on the book when the Tungrians (Marcus’s cohort) are rescued by the remnant of the 6th legion (who have been betrayed and had their eagle captured), and the tribune in command shouts the order into a momentary hush that falls across the battlefield ‘Sixth legion! For the honour of your fallen dead! No! Prisoners!’ The hairs on my neck stand up just writing it! 10. In Wounds of Honour, who was the most difficult character to write and why? The easiest and why? The most difficult? Marcus, because I had to make him both vulnerable and yet strong enough to survive his situation. The easiest? Dubnus, because he’s just so much fun to write, says what he thinks and does what he knows is right. Although I am very fond of Rufius, a cynical retired legion centurion. 11. Have other works inspired you in the writing of this novel? Yes, mainly Stephen Pressfield’s Gates of Fire. Genius. 12. Could you tell us a little about your protagonist? He’s a son of a senator who has his position and comfort torn away with his father’s murder, finding himself dropped into an auxiliary cohort and forced to fight for his survival. He’s a dimacherius by training, deadly with two swords, and he can go hand to hand as well, he’s intelligent and (his strength and weakness), once he’s roused he will take the most appalling risks on the battlefield. As we see in book three when…ah, but that would be telling! 13. Any movie projects from your books? No. There’s just too much Roman stuff out there, and producers tend to write their own scripts to avoid having to buy rights. One day… 15. What is your relationship like with your readers? How can readers get in touch with you?
I talk to my readers a lot. My website has a comments page and I love to get feedback, even the critical stuff. If you’re not listening then you’re not learning! 16. How do you imagine your future right now? I’d like to think that I’ll be able to go full time writing at some time in the next few years, but my current sales won’t support my German sports car habit! I do intend to keep writing until I’m 70 – 75, and I have another 20 book series in me that I’d love to write alongside the Empire series. 17. Do you read reviews of your books? Sadly, yes I do! Sometimes I reply as well, mainly to the bad ones, but only if I feel the reviewer is being unfair or hasn’t actually read the book properly. And you have to listen! I was recently told that I use too many facial expressions in the books (raised eyebrows, mostly), which is great feedback. 18. What are you reading at the moment? I’ve just finished re-reading Abercrombie’s ‘The Heroes’, and I’m now waiting eagerly for Christian Cameron’s ‘Poseidon’s Spear’ to arrive on my Kindle. 18. Did you have a teacher who was a particular inspiration to you? Not in writing terms, no. I did have several teachers who helped me to understand the way a man should choose to live though, which I believe is the most important thing a child needs from education. 19. Finally, the inevitable question. Are you currently working on a new novel? Any other projects? Yes, I’m working hard to complete book 6 in the Empire, series (The Eagle’s Vengeance), and after that I will be into book 7 (The Emperor’s Knives), which sees our hero in Rome and looking for blood to avenge his father’s murder. And as I said, I do have another series in my head, but it’s rather different from Rome! Only time will tell if I can get it into print.
Historical Novel Society reviews
FINN’S FATE BY MICHAEL WILLS
When a fire destroys their homestead, Finn and his two older brothers Torsten and Gunnar set off on a journey that they hope will bring them riches, rewards, and a better life. Their life of adventure takes them into the realm of King Erik and slavery. That’s not where this tale ends. Finn and his brothers escape and find themselves part of the Viking tradition, raiding villages and towns in what is now the UK to find silver and slaves in order to return wealthy enough to marry or just have a better life. Finn’s Fate has been placed in the ‘Young Adult’ market and from what I can see, the only reason it’s there is because it isn’t quite as gory as some other Viking tales. That’s not to say it isn’t full of action, far from it. Beheadings and fights aplenty! It’s an extremely gripping book that entices the reader to keep going onto the next chapter despite the clock now reading 2am and an early morning start beckoning. Finn’s Fate works well as that bridging book, the introduction to more adult material while still being not quite as bloody as some others. Michael Wills has obviously meticulously researched this story, the locations, the weather, the clothing, food; everything is given life and Wills is very much a man of the sea. His knowledge of sailing makes the intrepid trio’s journey come alive. Definitely recommended.
