The Battle of the Kondurcha: A Forgotten Mega-Battle

On Monday, 15 Rajab 793 (= 18 June 1391) after 6 days of rains the clouds dispersed. Two huge armies froze against each other in a field near the small river Kondurcha. Suddenly karnay trumpets roared, and the earth shook. 400,000 soldiers marched into battle‌

Source: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Igorsvyat.jpg?uselang=ru (the picture is not about THIS particular battle, but is rather a metaphor) The Prologue Created by Genghis Khan (1155-1227) and his descendants, the Mongol Empire (Yeke Mongol Ulus, which means "The Great Mongolian State") in the 13 th century was more than the most powerful state of the world. Stretching from the South Korea and China to Novgorod and Bulgaria, it was the first (and the only one in history) that was able to unite within one state China and Eastern Europe, the Eurasian steppes, the Caucasus and Iran. The Mongol empire possessed human, economic and military potential, surpassing that of all other major nations of the era combined. This is a unique case in the history of mankind. Western and Southern Europe, India, Southeast Asia, North Africa were not conquered by the armies of the Mongol empire, but they experienced the pressure and partially acknowledged its sovereignty. For example, nominal vassals of the Mongols were the Byzantine Empire and the kingdom Dai Viet. It was world domination. [14] But in the second half of the 13th century the conflict between the descendants of Genghis Khan, resulted in tremendous internecine battles that prevented further expansion and sapped their power in the conquered countries. Huge Western uluses of the empire became almost independent states. The largest of these was the Jochid Ulus, better known as the Golden Horde. Russian principalities were vassals of this great state, stretching from Bulgaria to the Irtysh. Its capital, which stood on the Volga, Sarai Berke (near the present-day village of Tsarev in the Volgograd region) was a large and prosperous city. However, formally the Golden Horde was still a part of the Mongol Empire and continued to send a symbolic tribute to the Great Khan in Beijing.

The Mongol Empire in the late 13th century. Source: http://s1.zetaboards.com/anthroscape/topic/4186209/9/ From mid-14th century the Mongols began to lose their dominance over the world: the reasons were the feud that started between the descendants of Genghis Khan in the1260s, and the amazing scope and heterogeneity of the empire difficult to control, as well as a number of socio-economic, political, ethnic and cultural reasons. The number of victims and the scale of destruction that accompanied this process were about the same as a century earlier - during the conquests of Genghis Khan. First, the power of the genghisids fell in Iran, then began the expulsion of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty from China. The Golden Horde also plunged into a deep crisis. Here the struggle for the imperial throne intensified, its negative effects were compounded by a plague epidemic and natural disasters. Sometimes the Horde had two Khans at one and the same time, each of whom claimed full sovereignty, but actually controlled only a part of the Ulus of Jochi. In the 1370-ies in the western part of the Golden Horde (west of the Volga), the power fell into the hands of beqlar beg Mamai (1335-1380). He did not belong to the family of Genghis Khan and had no right to the imperial throne. Therefore, he ruled on behalf of this or that genghisid, whom he proclaimed Khan, and often replaced one by another. In this situation, the Russian princes vassals of the Horde - stopped regular payment of tribute. The Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy (1350-1389) even dared to start an armed conflict with the ruler of one-third of Jochid Ulus. At the same time, the lands in the west of Russia were conquered by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and were later incorporated into the Duchy, finally coming out of control of the khans altogether. The power of the Mongol rulers in Central Asia weakened, so in Transoxiana (the area between the Amudarya and the Syrdarya with the center in Samarkand) there appeared a

ruler, who, like Mamai, kept a local khan as a puppet and ruled autocratically in his name. He was not a descendant of Genghis Khan, but resembled this famous conqueror, for he had an iron will, was a brilliant military leader and was relentless to his enemies. That was Timur (1336-1405). The Main Dramatis Personae Tīmūr ibn Taraġay Barlas (Tamerlane) (1336-1405). His father's name was Taragay or Turgay, he was a soldier, a small landowner. According to some assumptions, Timur’s father Taragay was the leader of the Barlas tribe and a descendant of a Karachar Noyan (noyans were large feudal landlords in the Middle Ages), a powerful assistant and a distant relative of Chagatai, the second son of Genghis Khan.

Source: http://vkurse.ru/article/6493545/ When Timur was still a child, the Chagatai state in Central Asia (Chagatai ulus) disintegrated into Transoxiana and Moghulistan, and the region plunged into political anarchy. Timur entered the service of the ruler of Kesh (now Shahrisabz) – Hajji Beg, who was allegedly the head of the tribe of Barlas. In 1360 Transoxiana was conquered by Tughlugh Timur. Hajji Beg fled to Khorasan, and Timur entered into negotiations with Tughlugh Timur and was appointed the ruler of Kesh. In this turbulent time of strife and rebellion Timur rapidly paved the way to power due to his military talents, becoming the great emir (sovereign). Not being a genghisid, Timur formally could not bear the title of the Great Khan, and always modestly called himself emir (leader). However, the marriage with the daughter of a genghisid Kazan Khan, Sarai Mulk Khanum, allowed Timur to add to his name the honorary title of "Gurkān", meaning "son-in-law." Despite the fact that formally he had not taken the title of Khan and made do with the title of "the great emir" - a descendant of Genghis Khan Suyurgatmysh (1370-1388) and his son Mahmud (1388-1402) were formally Khans during the rule of Timur - in 1370, Timur started building his own state, Turan, with the capital in Samarkand. A picture of Tokhtamysh taken from Russian sources. Source: http://uk.rodovid.org/wk/Зображення:Tohtamysh1.jpg Tokhtamysh was a son of the ruler of Mangyshlak Tui-Khoja Oglan, an influential prince under Urus Khan. Tui-Khoja Oglan was a twice removed uncle of Urus Khan, who ruled the Blue Horde – eastern part of the Golden Horde. Tui-Khoja Oglan refused to participate in a campaign of Urus Khan who was aiming to seize the supreme power in the Golden Horde, for which he was executed. After his father’s execution in 1376 young Tokhtamysh, fearing for his life, fled to Samarkand to Timur. [10] Timur patronized Tokhtamysh and spent huge amounts of money on him, but not without a secret reason. Busy with uniting Central Asia into a single state in the 1370-s, however, Timur was very concerned about creating a favourable foreign environment for his newborn state. Because of this Timur looked at the eastern and north-eastern borders of Tansoxiana with extreme unease. He was most concerned with the policy of the Mongol khans of Kashgar and Zhetysu, and the Jochid Ulus.

Timur was well informed about the events in the Golden Horde, about the turmoils rending it, about Mamai, finally about the role that the White Horde and its new ruler Urus Khan were beginning to play in reviving the Jochid Ulus. The uniting of the Golden Horde, the revival of the power of the Ulus of Jochi, from the point of view of Timur was harmful to Tansoxiana, for the mighty Jochid Ulus had always been the threat to this state. Timur as the ruler of Transoxiana was very interested in weakening the Golden Horde. That's why when in 1376 prince Tokhtamysh appeared in Samarkand Timur immediately appreciated the possibility of active intervention in the affairs of the White Horde, and then the Golden Horde. [13]

In 1377 young Tokhtamysh with the support of Timur's troops began the conquest of the Golden Horde. In this struggle with the forces of Urus Khan he suffered a series of defeats, but did not give up his dream. In 1378 thanks to Timur’s military support Tokhtamysh became the ruler of the White Horde with the center in Sygnak (now in Kazakhstan). The White Horde (Ak-Orda) was divided into two parts: the western part which included the northern coast of the Black Sea, the Crimea, the Don region, and the eastern part which included the Volga region and the North Caucasus. The eastern part traditionally was the possession of Batu Khan, Berke and other Jochids. In the spring of 1378, after the fall of the eastern part with the capital in Sygnak, Tokhtamysh invaded the western part, controlled by Mamai. By April 1380 Tokhtamysh had been able to capture all the Golden Horde up to Azov, including its capital Sarai Berke. [13, 2]

In 1380, after the Battle of Kulikovo, Tokhtamysh, aided by Timur, seized the throne of the united Golden Horde (Jochid Ulus), killed beqlar beg Mamai, and sent ambassadors to the Russian princes with the news of his accession to the throne. The princes received the ambassadors with honors and, in turn, sent messengers with gifts for the new Khan. However, the great Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy did not bother to go to the new Khan to obtain from him a jarlig authorizing his right to rule as the grand prince. Russia and the Horde spent the following two years as two independent states. Wanting to bring the “rebellious Russian princes to heel, Tokhtamish ordered to plunder Russian merchants and to capture their ships. In 1382 he himself marched on Moscow with a large army. Many people (about 24,000) were killed, the city was burnt and looted. After this the Tatars took Pereslavl-Zalessky, Vladimir, Yuryev, Zvenigorod, Mozhaisk, and other cities. Then Tokhtamysh returned to the Horde, having plundered Ryazan principality on his way back.’

A miniature from Russian chronicle of the 16 th century. http://vstyag.narod.ru/LS-16.htm Then, being a genghisid, Tokhtamysh began his open confrontation with Timur, to whom he owed the throne, intending to seize the power in Turan (remember, Timur had no formal rights to the throne of the Chagatai ulus). Already by 1381 Tokhtamysh had headed for reviving the power of the Golden Horde and its great-power politics. Timur was aware that Tokhtamysh’s actions sooner or later would lead to a clash between them. Tokhtamysh was also well aware of it, vigorously preparing for the fight with his patron. Timur was also preparing for the clash, but he did not hurry because he thought that the time was not ripe yet. Timur knew what enormous resources and manpower Tokhtamysh had at his disposal at that time. Until the second half of the 80s Tokhtamysh was clearly stronger than Timur. Fearing that the Caucasus and the western part of Iran could fall under the power of the enemy, in 1385 Tokhtamysh undertook an invasion of the region. Capturing Tabriz and looting it, Tokhtamysh departed with rich booty. He repeated his invasion of Transoxiana in alliance with Zhetysu Mongols in 1387. While Timur was strengthening his positions in the Caucasus, Tokhtamysh entered into alliance with the old enemy of Timur, Emir of Moghulistan, Kamar ad-Din and threatened Timur’s possessions in Central Asia. The alliance agreement stipulated simultaneous attacks on Transoxiana from the north and from the east. To support Kamar adDin Tokhtamysh sent to Central Asia a large army led by Emir Ak-Hajji Oglan. [13] This was a serious threat and could not be tolerated. Already in 1388 Timur drove the enemies away and punished Khwarezmians for their alliance with Tokhtamysh. In 1389 he

made a devastating campaign deep into the Mongol-Tatar domains up to the Irtysh River in the north and up to the Big Jyldyz in the east. In 1391 he marched on the Golden Horde territories on the Volga. These campaigns have achieved their goal. The Battle of the Kondurcha was precisely the final point of the campaign of 1391. Extras and Props: The Armies of Tokhtamysh and Timur The Army of Tokhtamysh During the first century of its existence, the Golden Horde was one of the uluses of the Mongol Empire. The descendants of Genghis Khan ruled the Golden Horde even after the fall of the empire, and when the Horde broke into parts, they ruled its successor states. The Mongol aristocracy was the highest strata of the society in the Golden Horde. Therefore, the administration of the Golden Horde was based mainly on the principles that guided the government of the empire as a whole. Genghis Khan’s Yassa was its legal basis. At the same time, however, as in other parts of the empire, the application of the basic principles of the Mongol administration in the Golden Horde was defined by its geography, heterogeneous ethnic composition of the population and the spiritual atmosphere on a given territory. [15] The majority of the population of the Horde were Turkic peoples. From the religious point of view, the spread of Islam among the Mongols and the Turkic peoples of the Horde was a factor of great importance. Muslim institutions gradually established themselves along with the Mongol ones. The majority of Mongols of the Golden Horde descended from the four-thousand-strong troops that were passed over to Jochi by Genghis Khan; they belonged to the Wusun, Kyiat, Kynkyt, and Sayjut tribes. In addition, there were also the Manghit, but, as we know, they stood apart from the others, and since the time of Nogai Khan, they constituted a separate horde. As mentioned, the Turkic peoples enjoyed full rights in the steppe society. In the western part of the Golden Horde, the Turkic element was represented mainly by Kipchaks (Cumans) and the remaining part of the Khazars and the Pechenegs. To the east the Volga, in the basin of the Kama River, there lived the Bulgar survivors and some mixed Turkic-Ugric peoples (e.g. the Bashkirs). To the east of the Volga the Manghit (the Nogai) and other Mongol clans ruled the neighbouring Turkic tribes, such as the Kipchaks and the Oghuz Turks, most of whom merged with the Iranian natives. The Turkic peoples were more numerous than all the others. The Golden Horde also included some Russian, Alan and Circassian population. The lower basin of the Oka was inhabited by peoples of the Finno-Ugric origin, such as Mari, Mordvins and Meshchera, and in the Crimea and on the coast of the Azov Sea there were a lot of Italians and Greeks. G. Vernadsky writes that the organization of the army in the Golden Horde was based mainly on the Mongol principles, established by Genghis Khan, with a decimal division. The lowest unit of the army was ten (arban), ten tens were a hundred (jagun), ten hundreds constituted a thousand (mingan), ten thousands were tumen (tumen), ten tumens were a "banner" (tug). The independent military unit, an army that could act on its own, independent of others, was the formation of two tumens. Each of the Mongols knew which ten he belonged to, and the tens know their centurion, etc. At the same time, everyone knew that immediately after the summons, he was to go the assembly place with everything a warrior must possess to fight a

campaign. Woe to the warrior who did not have the necessary equipment - he would be severely punished for any lacking thing. The army units were grouped into three major military formations: the center (kel), the right wing (barungar), and the left wing (jungar). The Khan commanded his own military unit: the ten thousand personal bodyguards (keshig). The guards (keshigten) were recruited primarily from the children of the nobility, of strong, brave, skillful warriors, winners of military and sports competitions. A bukaul (quartermaster) was assigned to every big army unit. Like in other parts of the Mongol Empire, the army also formed the basis of the Khan's administration, each military unit controlled a separate area in the Horde. From this point of view, we can say that for administrative purposes, the Golden Horde was divided into myriads, thousands, hundreds and tens. The commander of each unit was responsible for maintaining order and discipline in his district. All together, they represented the local power and administration of the Golden Horde. The arms of the Horde warriors Offensive weapons Bow and arrow is a ranged weapon, which has played a major role in the weapons complex of the Horde warriors. Tatar-Mongol archers were famous for almost incredible shooting accuracy, and the killing power of the shots was extremely high. The Mongols used composite bows that had the draw weight of 60 to 80 kilograms. [7] A. Shcherbakov writes that, according to historical sources, bows of the Tatar-Mongols were of two types: the large Chinese bow, whose length reached 1.4 m, with distinct and bent apart riser, limbs, and long, nearly straight, bow tips; and the small bow, of Middle Eastern type. Its length reached 90 centimeters, with a less distinct riser and small curved limbs. The former had the advantage of long range, the second was more convenient to use at full tilt. The kit for shooting was called "saadak" and included a case for the bow and a quiver. They were attached to a special belt that had a hook fastener; the quiver was attached on the right, and the case for the bow on the left. The quiver was a narrow bark box, ornate with carved bone plates to insert arrows heads upward, or a flat leather box in which arrows were inserted heads downward and the fletching stuck out. Leather quivers were often decorated with embroidery, applique, plaques, and sometimes even with leopard tails. The case for the bow was decorated in the same way. The arrows were long, their shafts usually painted red to make spotting easier. Heads of Mongol arrows are of surprisingly diverse forms - from broad leaf-shaped and tine (chiselshaped) to narrow armour-piercing bodkin type. Almost as important as bows and arrows were the spears of the Tatr-Mongol horsemen: after the first arrow strike inflicted by the light cavalry, the heavily armed cavalry upset the enemy ranks with a second, spear, attack. Spears fully reflect the specifics of the Mongol martial art: spearheads were mostly narrow and faceted, rarely – leaf-shaped. Sometimes below the blade there was a hook for grasping the enemy and pulling him out of the saddle. The shaft below the tip was decorated with a short bunchuk, a piece of horse or yak tail hair, and with a narrow vertical banneret, which had from one to three tails.

Bladed weapons of the Tatar-Mongols were mostly backswords and sabres. Backswords had long single-edged blades, straight handles with the pommel shaped like a flattened ball or a horizontal disk. Backswords were usually borne by the nobility, and the main popular bladed weapon was the sabre. During this period, the saber is longer and more curved, its blade is wider, but narrow and slightly curved blades are still common. Blades can be both grooved and rhombic in cross- section. Sometimes the blade has an extension called "jalman" in the lower third. Crossguard on the Horde sabers has curved and flattened ends. Under the crossguard there was often a welded guard-bow nut with cheeks covering part of the blade - a characteristic feature of the Horde smiths. The grip ended with a pommel in the form of a flattened thimble, the scabbard had the same tip (shoe). On the scabbard there were lockets with carrying rings. Often leather scabbards were embroidered with gold thread; the decoration of belts was even richer. Sabres too were richly decorated, sometimes with precious stones, often with engravings, carved and embossed metal. The Horde actively used shock-crushing weapons - mace, pernach, battle-axes, flails and horseman’s picks. Earlier maces shaped like a steel ball or a polyhedron, sometimes with spikes, were virtually supplanted by pernachs. The stunning effect of this latter weapon was as powerful as that of the mace, but its ability to break through armor was slightly higher. Most often these weapons had six flanges. Each rider also had a rope noose (lasso). Armature The armature complex of a Horde warrior included helmets, plates, shin armour and forearm guards, as well as shields. The Horde helmets usually are of spheroconical shape, sometimes spherical, and vary widely. There were both riveted and seamless helmets in use, with chain mail aventail. The helmet could have brow eye cut-outs, a mobile arrow-shaped nasel, and discoid earpieces. The top of the helmet could be decorated with feathers or with the traditional Mongol broad leather strips. Probably in this period helmets with forged movable masks were in use. It can be assumed that the Horde also used helmets of European types. Notable Tatar-Mongols sometimes had helmets with protective face masks. Common soldiers instead of a helmet often wore light quilted leather or fustian caps reinforced with chain mail or metal strips. During this period, the Tatar-Mongols used chain mails - chain mail finds are very numerous in the territory held by the Golden Horde - but by the 1380-s there had also appeared progressive ring-plate armor. The steel plates in it were joined not with straps or tape attached to the cloth backing, but with metal rings. Soon this will become the dominant type of armour in post-genghisid lands. Already in the time of Mamai there probably could be found kalantar- and yushman-like armour. Mongols called protective mails "huyag" so that, perhaps, chain mails were also called so. All kinds of plate armor, including lamellar armour, in the "Secret History of the Mongols" are usually referred to as "hudesutu huyag" that is "leather strip armour." Lamellar armour from time immemorial has been the favorite armour of the Mongols, and in the territory of the former Genghis Khan empire such armour existed virtually unchanged until the 15th century. In the 1380-s lamellar armour made of plates connected by straps or cords was still used, but it is clear that in the western part of the empire they gradually go out of use. Cross boards of

such armour were made from separate metal plates, but leather plates could be used instead. Leather plates were usually painted and varnished. Mails made of soft materials also enjoyed great popularity. Tegilyay, or, as it was called by the Mongols, "Khatanga Degel" which meant "coat as strong as steel," is a quilted armor cut as a robe with sleeves to the elbow or made of broad cloth strips. Sometimes tegilyays were made with slits on the sides, or were long-sleeved, sometimes they were combined with neckpieces and cuisses made of metal plates, riveted to leather strips. By the end of the 14th century "Khatanga Degel" had often been worn under mail. Also in the 14th century "Khatanga Degel" was reinforced with the lining of metal plates, rivet heads out. Brigandinelike armor was also used, the backing of such armour was leather and there were metal plates riveted to it on the inside. Paired round or rectangular polished metal plates – mirrors – fastened with leather laces were often worn front and back. Mongols often used plate neck-pieces, covering the upper part of the chest, shoulders and the back. In the times of Mamai neck-pieces were made not only on the leather backing, but were also assembled from metal plates joined with rings. There are also many finds of the Horde hinged forearm guards of this period; they consisted of two metal parts joined with straps and loops. To protect the legs, as seen in the miniatures, they used steel three-part greaves, where the parts were joined with rings, and also kneepieces. The feet were also protected with plates. It is likely that chain mails, and perhaps other metal parts and armor of the Horde were blued or colored. The Horde shields were usually round and painted. Their size was 50-90 cm in diameter. Large shields were made of planks and covered with leather. Kalkans, shields of 60-70 cm in diameter, were made of flexible rods, laid in a spiral and joined with solid braid of colorful threads that formed a pattern. They were, apparently, very popular, as manufacturing technology was simple and cheap, but thanks to the extraordinary elasticity they amortized and reflected almost any blow dealt with blunt or even bladed weapons. The smallest round convex shields, up to 50 centimeters in diameter, were made of thick leather or even metal. All the shields had shield bosses and often additional metal plates.

Source: http://www.kbitva.ru/kulik_tat01.html (Illustrations from Щербаков А., Дзысь И. Куликовская битва. Экспринт, 2001.) Strategy and tactics Strategic art of the Horde consisted primarily in excellent reconnaissance. The Horde usually used merchants from neutral countries or from the country of the potential enemy as a network of agents. The Horde intelligence was collecting information, recruiting agents in the administration, spreading false and alarmist rumors, provoking internal political struggle and neutralizing the forces that could offer the most serious resistance, etc. Beginning a war, the Horde gathered as much information about their enemies as possible. Scouts and spies supplied the Khan with information on all the weak points in the enemy defense, and in particular about the contradictions in his camp, which the invaders could use to their advantage. The Khan also inquired about the roads, weather conditions, pastures, etc. For reconnaissance a military expedition of one or two tumens was sent to determine the military, political and economic potential of the enemy. The first contact with the enemy was made by mobile patrols, moving far ahead of the main force. These patrols also operated on the flanks and in the rear. The information collected by the patrols allowed the Horde commanders to be constantly aware of the location and strength of the enemy, of the enemy potential encampments, etc. The traditional nomadic strategic advantage was the speedy movement of masses of troops. Each man had at least two horses. The main rule of the Horde was: "On the march apart, in the attack together." They almost always invaded in several columns, moving at a marked distance from each other, but the columns were in constant communication. As a result, disparate groups could be quickly assembled. The columns’ progress was well-coordinated. Once the enemy army came in contact with the main forces, the troops of the Horde reformed in battle order. The standard order was formation of five rows, each hundred separated from the next one by gaps. Two front rows were riders armed with spears, maces and swords, perhaps, their horses were covered with armor. The other three rows were light cavalry, which had no armor or was equipped with light armor and armed with javelins and bows. At the beginning of the battle the light cavalry was put forward through the gaps between the first two rows, showering the enemy with arrows and javelins. Simultaneously, light cavalry on the right and on the left wing began flanking the enemy, trying to gain the enemy’s rear. The battle opened with the archers’ attack. The main weapon of the warriors and nomads - Tatars and the Cumans – was the bow, which they mastered from an early age. Thanks to its skillful use the outcome of the battle sometimes was predetermined before the melee. The Horde was armed with bows of different capacity and different designs, with great range and a huge killing power. An experienced warrior could shoot 10-20 arrows per minute! In the 14th century the Horde warriors mastered a more powerful weapon - the crossbow. Marco Polo wrote that each man had 60 arrows, half of them had small light arrowheads for massive low-angle fire from a distance, and the other half had large arrowheads for target shooting at close range, and its accuracy was such that the arrows hit the face and hands of the soldiers of the enemy and even cut the strings of their bows. Low-angle fire was mainly

used in the frontal attack and a false retreat. But the most effective was massive and simultaneously aimed fire. It was a characteristic feature of the Horde archers’ attack. The Tatar-Mongol army had everything it needed to deal the enemy a decisive blow. Heavy cavalry, consisting generally of the tribal nobility, was armed with four-or-three-meter-long spears tipped with different spearheads, often narrow, armour-piercing. Terrible ram attack of these riders usually decided the battle. If the first spear attack of the heavy cavalry did not achieve a decisive result, close assault weapons were used. A Tatar-Mongol warrior was also well protected. His defensive armament was of sufficient strength and at the same time allowed him to move with relative ease. It was perfectly suited for maneuver battle in which heavy armor, similar to the Western European knights’ armor, became a burden for the soldier and restricted his movements. For the aimed massive fire the Mongols used a special formation. It consisted in the archers detachment by detachment formed a chain circle and began the attack, "spinning" in front of the enemy clockwise so that the target was always to the left of the arrow, that is, in the most convenient position. Depending on the length of the front the archer managed to make two or three shots, after which the "Round Dance" led him away from the area of fire and he could prepare for the next series of shots, without danger. The adversaries remained almost stationary targets, and the clouds of flying arrows with heavy large arrowheads, fired from 20-40 meters, hit precisely the most vulnerable places. Thus, the attack of the Mongolian archers at the first stage of the fight pursued not only the wearing down the enemy and wreaking disorder in his ranks, but sometimes the complete defeat of the enemy, for the enemy often took to flight after this first stage. In any case, after the archers’ attack the task of heavily armed spearmen at the second stage of combat and on the thirds stage of melee considerably simplified. Over time, the opponents of the Golden Horde found ways to combat the attacks of mounted archers: vanguard mobile units came into existence. When a collision occurred, the major forces of the Horde used two main principles. The first was the division of troops into separate parts, which were introduced into the battle gradually, maneuvered by generals, who were always in the back of the battlefield, usually on high ground. The second principle was asymmetric shocks - concentration of the forces in one direction. The army of Tokhtamysh consisted of the cavalry provided by the nomadic peoples of the Horde and of foot soldiers likely to be mostly provided by the conquered sedentary peoples of the Finno-Ugric origin living in the Volga and the Kama basins. Symbols Tokhtamysh possibly used the banner with some version of the image of Tarak (comb) tamga, the symbol of the ruling family and the Khan's authority. Supposedly his Tarak tamga looked a lot like the silhouette of a swallow flying upwards.

The Army of Timur Timurs's army was the most combat-capable military force of the Central Asian region in the late 14th - early 15th centuries. Resting on the experience of his predecessors, Timur was able to create a powerful and efficient army, which enabled him to win brilliant victories on the battlefield over his opponents. This army was a multinational and multi-religious association, whose nucleus were the Turkic-Mongol warrior-nomads. [11] Timur’s state was a typical union of fiefdoms. On the one hand, they were old Iranian principalities in the territories of Transoxiana and Iran, led by local dynasties, on the other the newly formed feudal associations, led by Timur’s sons and grandchildren, as well as ahshams (nomadic tribes), ils and wilayahs (the people and the provinces) that were also fiefdoms. In his empire Timur formed a special system of fiefs, largely similar to the existing system of timars in the Ottoman Empire. Chagatai tribal chiefs were given conditional ownership of plots of land with peasants to work them, called suyurgals. A suyurgal owner was the absolute master of his land, but at first he could not pass his estate by inheritance. To get this right, the owners of suyurgal landholdings were obliged to perform military service, coming to war with a group of a certain number of soldiers. Many of these lands were part of the administrative system of the state or of parts of the state as administrative units, and since Kebek (1318-1326) were called tyumens. All those feudal units, tyumens, had to field the militia led by their rulers. Nominally, it was thought that with such a tyumen fielded 10,000 soldiers, but in fact the number was always, or almost always, less. According to Abdur Razzaq, when Timur gave the order to summon the militia, he sent out special persons called "tavajiyah" or "tavachiyah" vested with great powers. These were military officials on special assignments, a sort of aides who reported to Timur or other commander on the status of a unit during the battle or transmit his orders to emirs of tyumens, thousands, and koshuns. Tavachiyahs played a particularly important role when summoning the militia. Tavachiyahs summoned militia soldiers - the infantry and the cavalry of the provinces and tribes (ahshams), Turkic and Tajik peoples. Each militia warrior had to bring along, according to Abdur Razzaq, food and other supplies for the year, and to take four kinds of weapons - a bow and 30 arrows, a quiver and a case for the bow, and a shield. Every two men had to have between themselves one led horse, every 10 people - one tent, two spades, one

hoe, one sickle, one saw, one tisha ax, 1 awl, 100 needles, a strong rope, one strong skin, and 1 cauldron. Certain areas were subject to the draft, the drafted nomads formed tens, hundreds, thousands, and tyumens. What's more, the drafted army on the march was arranged into the right and the left wings, and the center. Sometimes those military skills were trained during grandiose Khan’s battues. The army of Timur was also a militia, like that of Tokhtamysh, but it was no longer countrywide. Because of the feudal character of Timur’s state, almost all nomads were drafted into the militia, but the agricultural population had to field only a strictly limited number of people, determined by the local ruler, according to the specific requirements from the top authorities and to the local conditions. This militia consisiting of citi-dwellers and farmers was called ‘sardabar.’ The essential difference of Timur’s militia forces from those of the Tatar-Mongols also consisted in the fact that, along with the cavalry, foot soldiers played a much greater role, which is evident from the descriptions of all the great battles of Timur, and this is quite consistent with the feudal nature of his state. Foot soldiers were mostly provided by farmers and artisans, although the artisans were drafted only to service battering rams and other siege machines, as well as various protective shelters and devices. In peacetime militiamen worked, produced things, had different duties, paid taxes - kopchur, avarizat, taxes for the maintenance of postal stations (yams), provided carts and fodder for horses and other animals. They were unreliable and among them there constantly brooded a threat of riots and rebellions. Detachments of the city militia defended the city during the siege, and took part in Timur’s campaigns against his neighbors. A characteristic feature of Timur's army was also the fact that Timur’s soldiers, drafted to the militia, sometimes served for periods longer than five or even ten years. Soldiers were regularly paid salaries, veterans were paid pensions. Waging his wars almost continuously since 1372 to 1405, Timur always improved his military organization, although it did not affect the principle of the militia. In Timur’s army Turkic names of the units partially replaced the Mongol ones. Timur's army organization has undergone some changes compared with the armies of his Mongol predecessors. Speaking of the militia, it is necessary to distinguish "ael" - the main cadre strength, from "izafe" - additional staff militia mustered if the unit suffered heavy losses. According to the decimal system militia was divided into thousands, koshuns, and tens. Koshuns were units of 50 - 300 people and larger units were kuls, their number was also unstable. Allies also fielded auxiliary troops, called hashar. The whole army was divided into several blocks (fauj). Thus, in the battle of the River Kondurcha Timur’s army consisted of 7 kuls, 2 of them were placed in reserve and were ready to support the center or a wing on the order of the chief commander. Each division had its own weapons, saddles, quivers, belts, and other insignia painted a special color. Some senior commanders were called sardars. The remaining chiefs were called emirs, emirs had 12 ranks. A thousand was commanded by a ming-bashi, a hundred – by a uz-bashi, a ten – by an on-bashi. These positions were elective, but they had to be confirmed by the aboveranking officials. Every commander had an assistant, ready to replace him, if necessary. Ming-bashis were usually sons of emirs or aristocracy. Senior commanding positions in the army belonged to the relatives and close associates of Timur. The Army practiced cast-iron discipline based on punishments (e.g, one of the disciplinary punishments was deprivation of one-tenth of the offender's salary) and rewards (praise, promotions, gifts, titles). Timur's army was divided into cavalry and infantry. The basis of the cavalry was TurkicMongol mounted archers. There were also heavily armed cavalry and Timur’s bodyguards,

who formed the military elite. The role of infantry has increased dramatically in the late 14 th 15th centuries. In particular, infantry was indispensable in the siege of fortifications, despite the fact that for the most part it played a supporting role. The forces of Timur also had heavy infantry at their disposal. There were also pontoniers, engineers, throwers of "Greek fire", and workers needed during sieges. Timur also formed a special kind of infantry, specializing in combat operations in the mountains (they were recruited from the inhabitants of mountain villages). The total strength of the army was unstable. Timur himself claimed that for the campaign against the Golden Horde he was able to gather a huge army numbering 200,000 peolple. Timur’s military principles also took root in Genghis Khan’s Yassa, and according to Yassa, the army on the march was always held on semi-starvation rations, the premise being that a well-fed dog is not much good while hunting - so is the gorged warrior, he fights sluggishly, without the rage necessary in battle. This is the reason of one of the most distinctive features of the era of the Mongol army and Timur’s army - the propensity to violence and looting towns and villages. The arms of Timur’s army The arms in Timur’s army were largely standardized. The main weapon of light cavalry, as well as of infantry, was the bow. Light cavalry used sabres, swords, backswords and axes. Heavy cavalry fought with sabers or swords (plus to bows and arrows, which were common). Timur’s bodyguards fought with maces, hatchets, sabers; their horses were covered with tiger skins. The warriors generally wore the saber on one side and the sword - on the other. During campaigns, each soldier had to have a certain amount of arrows in the quiver. So, in a campaign against the Golden Horde, each soldier had to have 30 arrows in his quiver. In addition, before going to fight the Golden Horde Khan, Timur ordered every soldier to have a spear, a mace, a leather-covered shield, and a dagger. The marching kit of a light cavalryman should also include a saw, an awl, needles, a rope, an ax, 10 spare arrowheads, a bag, and a tursuk (a leather bag used to carry a store of water). Every rider had to have 2 horses. A uzbashi had to have 10 horses, his own caravan, a sword, a bow and arrows, a club, a mace, chain mail and armor. Light infantrymen were armed with bows and swords, heavy infantry soldiers fought with swords, axes and maces. During the siege of the city they actively used crossbows. Light infantrymen wore leather coats for protection. Heavy infantry soldiers were protected with armour, helmets and shields. Heavy cavalrymen were dressed in armour (the most common armour was chain mail often reinforced with metal plates, as well as laminar armor and huyag), and protected by helmets. Simple greaves and bracers, later splinted, protected the limbs. Heavy cavalry soldiers protected their horses with armour, too. Timur’s army also used huge trench shields (chapars), and for the Battle of Kondurcha some siege engines (turas) were mentioned (though there are no details, and it’s hard to imagine what these siege engines were like).

Strategy and tactics Due to the iron discipline and superior training, Timur’s army executed the orders of its commander skillfully and precisely. Due to this he was able to win over Khan Tokhtamysh’s troops, not succumbing to the traditional Mongol tactics of luring the enemy into the wide steppes and avoiding ambushes. Timur was perfectly versed in the political system of the region, where he had to fight, and cleverly used the services of the many spies. Detailed attention was paid to the strategy and tactics of the enemy. During a battle, according to the theoretical settings, Timur’s army was divided into three great lines, each of which had 3 echelons. Thus, the troops on the battlefield were usually formed so that the formation was nine levels deep, and they were not equal in size. The front line was the weakest one. The lines were gradually introduced into the battle. Considerable forces were held in reserve to strengthen the center or a wing when necessary. A battle usually began with light throwers at the outposts, and then the vanguard joined the fight. The wings had their vanguards that engaged in battle when it was necessary to support the main vanguard. If these forces were not enough, the left half of the right wing and the right half of the left entered the battle; if their assistance was also insufficient, Timur threw into the fray the remaining parts of the wings. If necessary, when the enemy was much exhausted, they were followed by the battle reserve composed of the choicest troops, commanded by Timur himself. Timur did so saving the flanks and the reserve to preserve the possibility of flanking and gaining the enemy’s rear, or even breaking through the center of the army and dealing the subsequent blow using the fresh reserve. This tactic ensured Timur’s continued success in the fight against his enemies. Symbols Timur’s banners were blue with three white circles. They are believed to symbolize the earth, water and sky, but it is believed that Timur borrowed the symbol from Tibet, where it means the past, present and future.

Source: http://japanesedolls.ru/index/0-1154 He also flew the green banners of Islam. *** On the side of Tokhtamysh fought the Tatars, the Chuvashes, Mordvins, and other FinnoUgric and Turkic peoples of the Volga, possibly some troops from vassal Russian principalities. On the side of Timur fought the best soldiers – ghilmans - of the conquered countries of Central Asia and the clan of Edigu, another pretender to the Golden Horde throne, who aimed also to revenge his father killed in a battle with Tokhtamysh in 1378.

Competition One

This is a world dominated by The Wild. Man lives in pockets of civilisation claimed from The Wild. Within men's walls life is civilised, the peace punctuated by tournaments, politicking, courtly love and canny business. Beyond those walls men are prey vulnerable to the exceptionally powerful and dangerous creatures which populate the land, and even more vulnerable to those creatures schemes. So when one of those creatures breaks out of The Wild and begins preying on people in their homes, it takes a specialist to hunt it down or drive it out ... and even then, it's a long, difficult and extremely dangerous job. The Black Captain and his men are one such group of specialists. They have no idea what they're about to face ... Forget George and the Dragon. Forget Sir Lancelot and tales of Knightly exploits. This is dirty, bloody work. This is violent, visceral action. This is a mercenary knight as you've never seen one before.

Flag Wavers of Italy

The historical group "Flag Wavers and Musicians of S.Barnaba Castel", was founded in 1999 to surround the "Palio del Diotto" of Scarperia, historical re-enactment with which, through games of vigor among young people of the districts of the country, we celebrate the 'installation of the new ruling in Scarperia sent every year by the Florentine Republic to govern the new lands of Mugello.

The group takes its name from the castle of the town of Scarperia, current Palazzo dei Vicari, that before the coming of the Vicar, was named after the saint of the town, St. Barnabas. The purpose of the group is handed down to the present day the ancient art of "handle flags" art of military origin, due to the need to report to the military units allied movements of the enemy in the field. The flags then became a symbol of celebration in the following centuries, the Court of the Medici family in Florence evolved.

Friendship is the key component of our group, composed mainly of Scarperia boys between 14 and 25 years, not to mention those who, "older" started the construction of the historical group. Each year the group organizes a course for drums, trumpets and flag bearers, entrusting the new generation, the experience of the most experienced members.

The historical group is divided into two branches, the Flag-wavers and Musicians. These are in turn subdivided into drums and trumpets. The drums are still as once made of wood, with natural rope and tie in animal hides, while the trumpets, ancient wind instruments without the modulation of tone, provide an excellent knowledge of musical tones which are still played by the musician gutturally .

In addition to having toured Italy in length and breadth from Sicily to the Veneto, the group embarked outlets in France, Germany and Belgium, having had the opportunity to participate in the gastronomic fair of Mons, the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of NATO base Geilenkirchen, initiated the twinning with the town of Laguiole, always trying new experiences, however, have a historical value which falls between the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods in which our business has been more prosperous. The effort required to make a show any, a great SHOW, we are involved practically all year round once a week, with training and studies of new choreographies of flag-wavers and interactions with music. This great sacrifice brings a rich season of performances from May until October we are involved every other weekend or so, in a different place, with processions, parades through the city, performances that can commit to a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 18 flag-wavers with one or two flags in hand, in addition to more traditional torque or sculler, which may perform also in very narrow spaces. MURDER IN THE PALACE BY IAIN CAMPBELL

Prince Ra-em Hotep, son of Ramesses II, has been found dead in his room. Poison is suspected and Cretan pharmacist, Nikolas, is brought in to investigate the mysterious death. A ‘locked room’ puzzle is presented here: who could possibly have killed the prince? Nikolas finds his initial investigation thwarted by the funerary processes of Egypt and, building a group around him, finds himself travelling across Egypt to uncover the conspiracy of Ra-em Hotep’s death and unwittingly, discovering rebellion and corruption. Campbell’s writing style incorporates a very dry wit and there’s no doubt that Egypt springs to life on the page. The religious elements of Egyptian life are given scope but are also somewhat derided by Nikolas who believes his own Cretan upbringing and society to be superior and less superstitious. This leads to some very interesting discussions between Nikolas and his entourage, which makes for entertaining reading. The herbal medicines and cures created by Nikolas and his partner, are uncannily accurate and a lesson is given through entertainment in the history of medicine as well as the lives of all aspects of Egyptian society, from the lepers and miners, who are ostracised by those in towns and cities, to the high royals in the palaces. A good read and one for taking time over and relaxing with.

Wellingborough’s Medieval Festival 2013 Over the last weekend in July the town of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire is going to enjoy a Medieval Festival with a difference. Instead of it being staged in a park or a field with arena displays and an admission charge, it is going to be staged all around the town, and be completely free of charge. It is being paid for by the town centre businesses, who are organised as a Business Development Initiative in order to generate positive publicity for the town and to highlight the diversity of what is on offer, which includes completely free parking. Because Wellingborough doesn’t have just the one single defining medieval event to celebrate or commemorate, we have the freedom to decide exactly what form the Festival will take. In 2013 it will have a War of the Roses storyline. It is 1473. King Edward is planning to hold a Parliament in Northampton, but has heard rumours of a Lancastrian plot in the area. He sends his trusted lieutenant Sir John of Skirbeck to see how the land lies. Sir John finds folk plotting, makes arrests, and arranges Trial by Combat. The followers and retinues of the suspects attempt to free them, and a melee ensues, interrupted by the arrival of King Edward ( and his artillery train!). The innocent are put to death and the guilty pardoned – sort of thing. The main LH encampment will be in Croyland Gardens, but various locations around the town will be used for displays and demonstrations, and “street theatre” is the name of the game, with arrests taking place in such places as Costas coffee shop, and miscreants trying to evade justice by running and seeking sanctuary wherever they can. Bearing in mind Sir John’s cleverness in hiring God’s Company of Tabor as his enforcers, you can expect this to be pretty ineffectual! There’s a facebook page with photographs and information at https://www.facebook.com/WellingboroughMedievalFestival Participants include: Ruth Moore Williams, God’s Company of Tabor, The Knights of Skirbeck, Histeria, The Knights of Honour, Devilstick Peat, the Ya Raqs Dance Troupe, Serpentyne, Squeake’s Noyse, Peasants Revolt, Fight Team Falchion, The Wythe Retinue, Islwyn Hawkeye Jones, The Monteiths, and Warts and All. Organiser David Smith is working on a Crusades idea for 2014….
