ABOUT MILWAUKEE REPERTORY THEATER Milwaukee Repertory Theater is a nationally recognized theater company that presents a critically acclaimed selection of compelling dramas, powerful classics, award-winning contemporary works and lively cabaret shows on three stages from September through May. The Rep also produces an annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. The Rep’s home, the Patty and Jay Baker Theater Complex, located in the Downtown Theater District, contains the Quadracci Powerhouse Theater, Stiemke Theater and Stackner Cabaret. For ticket information or to receive a copy of The Rep’s 2008/09 Quadracci Powerhouse Theater, Stiemke Theater or Stackner Cabaret brochure or a Rep Patron Guide, please call 414-224-9490 or go to milwaukeerep.com. The Rep is “home” to a resident acting company that performs with The Rep throughout the season. This company of remarkable actors – in residence at The Rep for the entire season – is an essential component of the exceptional performances and unrivaled artistry that make up a season at The Rep. Having the company allows The Rep to develop complex and ambitious productions like RICHARD III and MARY STUART (2003/04), A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY (2005/06), TARTUFFE (2006/07) and ARMADALE (2007/08). It guarantees inspired performances in large and small roles. We believe that having a resident acting company makes plays better for our audience. And that’s what we’re all about. Distinguished members of the 2008/09 Resident Acting Company are: Jim Baker, Mark Corkins, Jonathan Gillard Daly, Lee E. Ernst, Laura Gordon, Torrey Hanson, Gerard Neugent, James Pickering, Rose Pickering, Lanise Antoine Shelley, Peter Silbert, Deborah Staples and Brian Vaughn. Milwaukee Repertory Theater is a member of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT), a management association of some of the nation’s largest non-profit professional theaters that collectively bargains with the unions that represent the actors, directors and designers that work at The Rep; a constituent of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the non-profit professional theater; and a member of Theatre Wisconsin, the statewide association of non-profit professional theaters. ◆ The director of this show is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, an independent national labor union. ◆ This theater operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres and Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. ◆ The set, costume, lighting and sound designers are members of United Scenic Artists, a national labor union. ◆ This theater is an equal opportunity employer. Except in plays where race itself is an issue, casting is decided on the basis of ability, not race. ◆ All scenery, costumes and properties for Rep productions are made in Rep shops. ◆ Audio Describers and Interpreters are provided by arrangement with Independence First. ◆ The Rep is proud to be a member of The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF), which provides major annual financial support. SETTING THE STAGE: AN INTERVIEW WITH TODD ROSENTHAL TR: The first show I designed for The Rep was ESCAPE FROM HAPPINESS in 2002. Since then, I’ve come back to design one or two shows a year (see sidebar). I’m an Associate Professor of Design at Northwestern University and my design studio is based in Chicago – so it’s very easy to come up here. What keeps me coming back is the collective of talented artists working here and the variety of theater that The Rep is willing to produce. I love designing here. They did Albee’s THE GOAT OR, WHO IS SYLVIA?! What major regional theater did Beckett’s ENDGAME last year? The Rep deserves to be recognized on the national scale for the innovative company that it is.

Because I probably got a lot done – even if it was just daydreams and pondering. I now know that the really, really, really crappy idea, ultimately leads to the better idea. Like manure to fertilizer! LL: EURYDICE, is the 13th set you’ve designed for Milwaukee Rep. Can you tell me about your history of designing for The Rep, and what keeps bringing you back?

P L AY W R I G H T B I O G R A P H Y – S A R A H R U H L Ruhl’s plays often deal with the theme of death, more particularly the link between the living and the dead. This reccurring theme was heavily influenced by the death of Ruhl’s father in 1994. The father-daughter relationship in EURYDICE can be compared to the relationship between Ruhl and her own father. In her writing, Ruhl also likes to combine the everyday and the familiar with the extraordinary and the strange. It should be no surprise that Sarah Ruhl walks the path of the playwright. Following her mother to community theater rehearsals when she was only six years old, Sarah would give the actors notes on their individual performances after each show. Before Sarah even knew how to write, she would dictate stories to her mother who would type them for her. Sarah was exposed to works by important playwrights and authors such as Shakespeare, Chekhov and Flannery O’Connor from a very young age.

Sarah received her MFA from Brown University, Sarah Ruhl under the mentorship of Sarah Ruhl has won multiplaywright Paula Vogel. ple awards including the She also attended Pembroke College, Helen Merrill Award and the Whiting Oxford. REP EVENTS – LOOK WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE REP! The Rep’s Development Department has gone through many changes, adding more staff and refocusing our goals. As you might expect, The Rep is a fun place to work, but now we also get to plan more parties. And, oh, the parties we’ve planned! This season, The Rep’s 55th, we are preparing so many fun events, you may wonder how we can stand it all. But we’re up to the challenge! We begin with a new series designed to enhance your Rep experience. The Director’s Dialogue Series is an opportunity to meet a director of a production and discover his vision. It is an often overlooked fact that the director is the one who decides everything on the stage, from the type of teacup that is on the table, to exactly where an actor stands as he delivers his lines in such a precise way. We kick off our series with EURYDICE director Jonathan Moscone on Thursday, October 30. In December, Joe Hanreddy, our Artistic Director as well as the director for THE BLONDE, THE BRUNETTE AND THE VENGEFUL REDHEAD, will be featured. Join him on Thursday, December 11. Then in the New Year, meet director Timothy Douglas as he discusses TROUBLE IN MIND on Thursday, January 22. Our series ends with Ben Barnes, director for THE CHERRY ORCHARD, on Thursday, April 16. All evenings are only $40 each and will feature hors d’oeuvres and wine sponsored by Balzac Food and Wine. They begin at 6:30 pm here at The Rep. We’re also excited to tell you that we will again have our Evening of Holiday Shopping at Crate & Barrel on Monday, November 10. Tickets to this event are $25 and include a $15 Crate & Barrel gift card as well as a $10 donation to The Rep! Then, as you shop for all your holiday gifts, 10% of your purchases go to support The Rep. The evening also includes raffle drawings, Crate & Barrel treats and a special performance by the carolers from The Rep’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Once March comes, we will be celebrating our production of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE with a series of teas throughout

the area. Each event will feature a speaker and a chance to learn more about Jane Austen. We are excited to be working with The Jane Austen Society on these events as well as with The Anaba Tea Room in Shorewood. Of course our year wouldn’t be complete without The Rep’s 2009 Annual Gala. This year we celebrate New Orleans with The Bayou Ball. On Saturday, May 16th, The Rep will let the good times roll and you should plan to be there too! As you can see, we’ve got an exciting season of events planned! For more information about any of these events, or to suggest an idea for an event you would like to see, please feel free to call Lindsay Rocamora at 414-290-5347 or send an e-mail at lrocamora@ milwaukeerep.com.
