Final Learning Portfolio
Learning Process Class Learning Experience Week 1
First day of ARCH 101 class and I realized that it was Professor Jerry Lum again. I’m thinking I’m all in for the ride, learning everything from him will be very informative. First project: Is to make word message and collages to communicate who we are.
Week 2
From all our collected collages, we have to build a sign. The sign should capture attention of passerby’s and to be hanged with push pins on the classroom wall. In this class I have learned how to distinguished myself and be creative, resourceful for what materials I have around. I am looking forward to learn more design elements and methods in this class.
Week 3
What’s my sign represented myself who is a curious and the enlightened traveler. You can see thru the collages and the round eye ball the places I’ve been and seen from the past and recently. This sign will always represent the person who I want to be and embraces my travel benefits.
Week 4
Second project: A Journey of Discovery: in search of lost wonder. I felt like I was one of the layperson, but I welcomed all the critiques given. When I got home, I just inserted all the feelings I had felt as I remembered while again looking at the images. I realized that this project made me identify all my feelings in correlation with the pictures.
Week 5
Third project: Wall Construction Iteration #1 – The project was to build a wall relating to what we saw interesting and remembered while we were at the “A Journey of Discovery: in search of the lost wonder” moment. As I turned to my trustful magazines, I clipped a picture of 2 people resting their backs on a red colored wall this became the beginning of what my design intentions are and to relate and develop design languages. I can see a very hard and complicated “Wall Project” transforming.
Week 6
The narrative and the design process – Required reading was the “Analysis of Maya Lin’s Viet Nam Memorial Narrative” and activities were to develop our narrative design process and solutions using design language vocabularies. Iteration #2 – Using our narrative and design process we need to develop another iteration that demonstrates progress and challenges.
Week 7
Iteration #3 – Taking a turn that I did not anticipate I have produced a new wall design but within the same initial inspiration. Strengths - I see a lot of images from the other student postings or images that inspires me to do my best. Weakness – When I thought my progression has slowed down, I got my inspiration back from my groups suggestions. Opportunities – I had taken their suggestions, and progressed on a new design with the same inspiration. Threats – It was very hard the use that blade, maybe I need to get some new ones.
Week 8
Story Board - The project was to explore the internet and get images, that has the same feeling as our journey of discovery, our narrative and wall inspirations. I have found a few things but not a lot. With the new design inspiration, I also explored repositioning the images in various places.
Strengths – As I work on my new wall design, I felt like my interest has come back. Weakness – I think that I am making the scale model larger again and I need to press down harder with the blades. Opportunities – This will be my first to design something and be graded on. Threats – I should explore the web more and read up when I have time.
Week 9 Precedence Research & Seeking Inspiration; Iteration #1 - Folding is my selected structural approach. I have an idea for the final project, I knew what I wanted to construct already but I just do not know how to incorporate folding. Strength – I have found out that you can almost find whatever it is that your looking in the internet. Weaknesses – I always have to remember to be inspired at all times. Folding might not be my first choice. Opportunities – It is always fun to seek inspirations. Threats – There is never enough time. Week 10 Program & Site Analysis – We brainstormed in class today, I took pictures for the built site and what items were available for use so we do not have to over spend our gift card. Strength – I had collected images for my gazebo built inspiration with different sizes, heights and even colors. Weakness – It has to be a realistic size and capability to even begin construction. Opportunities – Maybe I can build a gazebo in my yard too after this project. Threats – I just hope I’m physically fit for this final project. Week 12 Small Scale studies – We formed our groups today. My team is an “A” team. I’m grouped in with very talented students. We have to bring in on Thursday a small scale model of our inspiration. Strength – I will be learning construction. Weaknesses – I definitely need carpenters gloves. Opportunities – I am looking forward to building my gazebo with a telescope to appreciate the spectacular views. Threats – I just hope my team will select my inspiration.
Week 13 thru Week 18
Final build project – The group selected Oriol’s model, Primus is our group name and our built project is called the Viewfinder. My personal inspiration was everything I have learned in class this semester, which is to “Avoid the Obvious and Create Something Different”. What makes our team design and construction different is that once it is visited, they will experience a feeling of openness. And as they proceed to the top of the viewfinder they can observe multiple views of McLaren Park and its surroundings. What allowed us to progress faster was the inspiration of building a towering structure that one can experience an endless views of San Francisco and above and below the schools courtyard. By working efficiently as a team and using a standard component such as a 2x3 wood and a 2 inch spacers place in between manage to keep the project within budget. The Viewfinder was built with a simple kit of parts but the outcome was dynamic. Everyone in the ARCH 101 class worked hard to build a meaningful project. Strength – The build tips from the hardware store along with the teams construction experience was very helpful in building the structure. Learning how to frame and construct was enjoyable. Weaknesses – I prefer to use a cordless drill over a corded one. Opportunities – I learned to use Google Drive for budget tracking, changes and team issues. It was a valuable financial experience being the budget coordinator in the group. Every cent was spent wisely. Threats – The experience was physically exhausting.
Week 1 – Project 1
Week 1 – Collected Collages
Week 1 – Assembled All Collages
Week 2 – “What’s Your Sign”
Week 3 – “What’s Your Sign”
Week 4 – Project 2
The Transamerica Building 1.
Q: What was felt specifically? What is the mood of this place? A: I felt very curious and excited as if it was very new for me. I have been living in San Francisco for 33 years and have not been inside or as close as I was from the building. I have sense an absence of noise and bustle, even though I was at the heart of a very busy street.
2. Q: What was sensed using all five of your senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste)? A: I was overwhelmed by the grace and symmetry of the building, while hearing the street traffic and maybe a faint sound of the famous cable car. I also observed and touch the unique heavily built building and imagined how strong and sturdy it’s structure. The building is surrounded by restaurants and other shops along the streets. It has a distinct smell of a busy street and also a kitchen smell radiating from the surrounding restaurants. A taste that I can almost describe as different cultural cuisine. 3. Q: What are the essential and major physical aspects and qualities contributing to what was spatially experienced? A: The skyscraper has become an icon and is recognized worldwide. It’s contributing source of a great pride to San Francisco. 4.
Q: Conclude with a set of hypothetical “recipes” or patterns for “cooking up” various evocative place. A: My concluding recipe would be: A huge amount of an obelisk-shaped and the same amount of an architectural masterpiece.
“I felt the heighten feeling of curiosity and excitement because of the architectural masterpiece.
“I felt the grace, symmetry of this strong iconic skyscraper.
“I saw similar patterns, uniquely oblique and heavily built structure.
“I felt the calmness and the welcoming feeling because of it’s surrounding flowers and plants”.
“I felt the inviting openly space and a sense of great pride inside the building.
Wall Construction Project
Wall Construction Project
#1 Iteration The narrative and the design process: • What are the most significant aspects and qualities of your constructed design? The most significant aspects are the red walls and individual images that derived from the method of Collage. The qualities of my constructed design have come from incorporating pictures from magazines, manmade cardboards and hanger boards. All material used from what I have around the house. • What will a first time viewer of your work see and experience? The first time viewer will see and experience an emotionally confused reaction, a notion of sadness or maybe a picture of a cold truth about the human life. The facial characteristic of the images may remind the viewers of a man and woman experiencing difficulties with their personal emotions. • What does your design primarily represent? From my initial design, it primarily represent a Fun back resting wall or it could also be a Friendly deep thinking wall. What are the details of what your audience will see and experience as they engage to your work and how these details relate to your metaphors? As viewers engage to my work, the audience will see and experience creative design progression with romantic curves and shapes, bright colors as necessary and geometric forms. •
Iteration #1 Added more detailed image (flowers), curvilinear canopy and table.
Iteration #1 Added more detailed image (drink glasses), rectangular canopy and table.
#2 Iteration • Hierarchically complex and dense: I unified my parallel walls with cut to length hanger boards for structural stability. Elongated the height by embedding a colored canopy for both images. I have decided to make my walls personal for a strong structured wall that relates to a strong nature of a male and on the other side for a delicate and an elegant but also a stable wall structure of a woman. • Introduction of new parts with perceivable relationships to others and to the whole: Inspired by the masculine and the feminine wall concept my wild imagination was released. I have introduced the curvature shape for the delicate wall and rectangular for the strong wall. The assembly of a long tubular shape above the walls represents their friendly communication access. • Successful use of repetition and rhythm: Again from my initial wall design, I stayed consistent with my primary design intentions which is a resting wall and could be a deep thinking wall. • Perceivable “conversations” between connected and proximally close parts: Along with the friendly communication access, the use of elements of curvature and rectangular for the cut out miniature tables and supported by the consistent use of the hanger boards create a feeling of a spatial awareness. • Your constructed design has multiple meanings: My wall construction has multiple meanings and it opened a very wide imaginary impressions of an endless playful scenes.
Iteration #2 Introduction of hierarchy and new parts (higher canopy and long tubular shaped conversation access).
Iteration #2 Introduction of hierarchy and new parts (higher canopy and long tubular shaped conversation access).
Iteration #3 My story board has remained having the same inspiration. Working with my group they have suggested to bring my images together facing each other and introduce shapes and forms. I used different material such as cardboards and toothpicks instead. I cut out the middle part of the canopy and with clear plastic to bring in natural light. All parts and images brought down to a scale and became easier to transport. Now it is “A Fun and Friendly Wall.

Kits of Parts
These internet images looks like it is fun to create, the car looks like it used up a lot of cardboard.
Story Board:
In my new design, I have added more parts and forms. I unified the parts with a long rectangular cardboard with a clear plastic sheet that opens the view of the floor as well as on the roof. The one on the right is a circular wall with circular plastic top for a brighter spatial experience. To the left is a triangular shape wall that looks inviting and welcoming. I also added a pathway that were cut outs from the different forms of window from both sides of the middle wall.

New design inspiration “The Fun & Friendly Wall” with scaled down images.
New Design – I also explored various positions for the images
Iteration #1 At an early date I knew what I wanted to construct. But how would I add this folding item on the project, because what I wanted to build is a Fun & Friendly Gazebo. Seeking for more Inspiration, I just stayed with folding and more folding. I became more and more inspired while researching for Gazebos.
Iteration #2
Iteration #3
Design Process for the Folding Team: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Choose foldable materials. Explore design inspiration. Sketch or Design a pattern. Proceed to fold and cut model Complete folding process
Research Analysis: My initial inspiration is a fun and friendly gazebo where I can introduce different shapes and forms all around. And with a telescope as the main focal to be able to observe the beautiful views surrounding the school area.
Program and Site Analysis planning done in class by Prof. Lum
T1 – 1st choice
T2 – 2nd choice
Program & Site Analysis:
These materials are available for use along with our gift card budget. These recycled items will be very useful to stretch out our budget and be able to purchase a much better telescope. I hope the school will award Prof. Lum the telescope as a retirement gift at the end of the semester.
