‘LEONEL UNPAID!’ Manila neglects cleanliness, ignores pile of garbage

Manila City government failed to renew the license contract with Leonel Waste Management last January 1, Wednesday, which resulted in the stack of garbage in several barangays in city.

Leonel’s contact with the Manila City government ended last December 31, 2024, and while they fulfilled their service obligations, the amount of garbage after the holidays was four times the usual amount, showed that they did collect trash but didn’t finish the job.

The Resilience, the official student publication, exposed the real numbers of gender diversity in school as of January 2025.

Publication staffers conducted a survey last January 16, Thursday, to find out the gender identities prevalent in PCCAHS.

1,116 out of 4,463 students coming from different grade levels both junior and senior high participated in the survey.

“We strongly refute this accusation Last December 23, 2024, when we announced to our employees that our contract of service is ending on December 31, we mandated them to continue doing our usual services until the end of our contract.” Leonel denied.

Leonel added that due to the unpaid debt of the Manila City government amounting to 561.44 million, they decided not to participate in the bidding for 2025 waste management contract.

The community felt agitated after seeing these piles of garbage in the different parts of the city.

Michael Dimaren, tricyle driver, shared his disappointment to Mayor Lacuna.

“Ang tambak at napakaraming basura sa kalsada ay mapanganib sa kalusagan at kabuhay ng mga tao dito sa Baseco. Sa akin bilang tricyle driver, ramdam ko ang dagdag nitong perwisyo, nabasan ang kita ko dahil sa traffic na binunga ng tambak-tambak na mga basura,” Dimaren said on an interview when asked about his opinion on the issue.

Marivie Estropia, housewife, conveyed her sentiment about the stinky smell caused by the pile of garbage.

“Amoy na amoy ang mabahong amoy ng mga basurang nakatambak malapit sa aming bahay na hindi nakokolekta sa mga dumaan na araw lalo na’t dumaan ang pasko at bagong taon. Naaawa ako sa mga anak kong sobrang nababahuan na kahit sa loob ng aming bahay ay pumapasok ang masangsang na amoy,” Estropia uttered.

The Resilience staffers asked the Sangguniang Kabataan Chairperson of the Baseco community, Andersen John Perez, about his opinion as public elected official of the barangay.

“It is a huge factor that can affect one’s overall health, especially the youth. As a leader, I remind all of us that we, the youth are the hope of the community, so we should be a good example and be the ones who will take the initiative to lessen the numerous piles of trash,” Perez reminded the youth when asked about the issue.

Meanwhile, Mayor Honey Lacuna guaranteed the Manila residents that MetroWaste Solid Waste Management and Philippines Ecology systems came together to resolve the uncollected amount of waste to prevent the potential health hazard.

“I apologize for the garbage problem. To my constituents, we still work hard this week to finish collecting the remaining trash and resume regular collection” Lacuna expressed.

Mayor Lacuna also apologized for the disruption caused by overflowing garbage and instructed the Manila citizen to drop by at health centers in case they feel sick and unease.

to address classroom backlogs

DepEd to build more classrooms, gets digital through PPPs

The Department of Education (DepEd), through Secretary Sonny Angara, announced last January 8 its plan initiating a large-scale project which will build new classrooms and enhance learning outcomes through digitalization.

This project involves public private partnerships (PPPs) to address a backlog of 165,000 classrooms and improve learning outcomes through digitalization.

Johaira S. Usman, 10 - Excellence

The project will start in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027.

DepEd will partner with the private sectors to finance the construction and maintenance of classrooms in the Philippines.

This initiative will address constraints on government funding.

Secretary Angara presented

The classroom gap is a massive challenge, but we believe that leveraging private investment through PPPs is the most efficient and sustainable way to address this.

The project estimated a cost of Php. 37.5 to 60 billion.

The department seeks to enhance learning outcomes through digitalization and solarization by providing electricity and satellite-based internet connectivity to schools nationwide.

“With a combination of strategic partnership and digital investments, DepEd is committed to bridging both the classroom and digital divides to create a future ready education system producing competitive and highly employable graduates” Angara said.

Scheduled for competition in 2027, the project is expected to benefit approximately 600,000 Filipino students with new classrooms and generate at least 18,000 jobs.

Secretary Angara hopes for the optimum success of this PPPs.

Studes reveal true colors, expose diversity

The number of participants is equivalent to 25 percent of the student population.

Staffers asked the students how they identify themselves whether they are straight, bisexual, lesbian or gay, or transgender or other identities.

84 percent or 937 claimed that they are straight, making this identity prominent due to its big number.

Lesbian and gay identity ranked second having seven percent or 78 students.

45 students or four percent identified themselves as bisexuals while 56 disclosed their identity as members of the transgenders and other rainbow community.

The survey showed that the members of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, intersexual, and asexual) community are progressively growing.

These numbers proved that diversity, not only in religion, raise, and disabilities but also in gender identities, is present in the school community and in need of support, understanding, and acceptance.

James Moreno, grade 10 student, expressed her request to the school officials to have more activities and programs for the members of the LGBTQIA+ community to showcase their talents, skills, intelligence, and beauty.

“Mabigyan pa sana kami ng mas maraming pagkakataong maibahagi ang aming galing, talion, at angking kagandahan sa pamamagitan ng mga proyekto at aktibidad, marami kaming kayang gawin kung pahihintulutan, at malaki rin ang aming ambag at maiaambag upang makapagbigay pa ng inspirasyon at wastong kaalaman sa mas marami pang mag-aaral,” Moreno said.

Reynora Laurenciano, school

principal, assured all students that fairness and equality are always the priority in providing school services both in academics and non-academics.

“Everyone is treated equally, what we offer to straight boys and girls are also offered to the members of the LGBTQIA+ or the rainbow community,” Laurenciano ensured.

She confirmed that the school considers their interests in any programs, projects, and activities of the school.

“Our administration counts their importance, we value their presence and contributions in the school, we just request them to always act decently with respect to all and remember that respect begets respect,” she added.

The school continues to adhere to the Gender-Responsive Basic Education policy by ensuring the safety, interests, and optimum learning of all regardless of their gender identities.

Police Master Sergeant Fernan C. Cano, morning shift supervisor of Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit (TMRU), indicated the importance of this ordinance in searching for the wanted criminals.

“The identities of those perpetrators of crimes within Baseco can now be easily determined utilizing CCTV footage and facial recognition, thereby promoting a safer and more cohesive environment,” Cano stated during the interview of the campus journalists.

However, some residents viewed this ordinance different from the ideas of the TRMU.

Jonna Dimaren, a regular motorcycle passenger, shared her opinion highlighting both the drawbacks of not wearing helmet while riding.

“Prohibiting helmets here in Baseco has many disadvantages, such as serious injuries when you have accident and health issues due to several eye, nose, and throat infections due to dirt inhalation,” Dimaren said on an interview.

Jeremie Apsay, a motorcycle rider, expressed his personal comments on the policy implemented by the TRMU pointing on various aspects and potential implications of the new ordinance.

Apsay specified that "as riders, our safety is compromised due to its implementation, and one of the downsides of this is they are not answering the questions of people why they immediately implemented this ordinance without public dialogues, they fail to provide any explanation for why it's being enforced.” The community followed the strict implementation of this ordinance but still waits for the clarity of its purpose and possible alternative solutions on the identified issues and problems. At present, the TRMU employs humane ways of implementing this ordinance with fair treatment to all, aiming for a safer Baseco.

English and Filipino subject teachers enhanced students’ comprehension through their Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) assessments from December 2024 to January of this year.

Phil-IRI is a test that aims to measure the reading ability of students where each text to be read is suitable for each grade to know the reading level of students.

To identify the reading levels of today’s Aquinoians, teachers conducted the reading assessment during their respective classes.

All students participated the group screening test which evaluated their silent reading skills and understanding of the text.

Teachers discovered that almost all, 9 out of 10 students, belong to frustration level while only few are instructional and independent readers.

Students under frustration level underwent an individual oral reading activity which required them to read a graded passage to identify their common struggles.

Teachers were able to identify the reading difficulties after hearing the miscues of the students.

The following areas are to be addressed by both English and Filipino teachers: mispronunciation; omission; substitution; repetition; transposition; insertion; alteration; and reversal among others.

Teachers’ Struggle

In adherence to one of the President’s Ten Point Basic Education Agenda, the school adheres to the implementation of the reading intervention program and remediation initiatives to strengthen the language and literacy skills of the students, particularly reading comprehension.

Despite an improved literacy rate, the Philippines still struggles with functional literacy, many children complete primary school but still cannot read or comprehend basic texts.

Teachers continue to receive non-readers from the nearby elementary schools.

Maria Arnie Dob, Filipino teacher,

to hope for better generation PH greets first-born ‘Gen Beta’

shared her strategy in addressing the comprehension problem of her students.

"Pagsasagawa ng mga iba't-ibang alternatibong interbensyon lalo na sa maunawaang pagbasa,” Dob said.

Dob also expressed the need for comprehensive discussions of the text read by the students.

“Kinakailangan ng mga mag-aaral ng mga komprehensibong pagkaunawa sa aralin o sa pagbasa at ito ay maisasakatuparan kung maituturo nang komprehensibo ang iba’t ibang paraan at dahilan ng pagkuha ng mensahe ng binasang akda,” she added.

Vanessa Villarosa, English teacher, claimed that there are factors that contribute to the reading difficulties of the students.

"I believe there are five factors contributing to reading comprehension difficulties among the Filipino students nowadays, the first three were categorized as internal factors, and the last two were categorized as external factors,” Villarosa stated.

Moreover, she enumerated the five factors or problems students tend to have.

“First, Filipino students had problems with understanding long sentences because of their limited vocabulary and reliance on dictionaries; second, they do not use effective reading strategies, especially in identifying main ideas and relying on word-by-word translation; third, their concentration was affected by distractions from too much use of social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook; fourth, they faced problems concerning their home environment, including limited parental help, parental limitations and minimal parental involvement; and they encountered issues with the school environment, including language barriers, limited access to dictionaries, the absence of visual materials, and the lack of appropriate learning materials,"

Laurenciano imposes discipline; Security beefs up ‘Close Gate’ policy

Laura Patricia P. Rivera, 10 - Excellence

Students will no longer be allowed to enter the school premises after 7:30 in the morning. Furthermore, they will not be permitted to attend their morning classes.

The purpose of the strict implementation of the policy targeted students to realize the importance of punctuality as it is observed from the previous school days that many students had habitual tardiness.

Reynora Laurenciano, school principal, directed all security guards to make sure that this policy will be implemented with fairness and consideration but should not tolerate any student.

“Siguraduhing ang mga bata ay makakapasok sa tamang oras, bigyan ng konsiderasyon ang mga mahuhuli ngunit ang kalabisan ng pagiging late ay hindi natin itotolerate,” Laurenciano said.

Laurenciano also instructed all teachers to remind their students regularly that tardiness will not be tolerated in the school and to always follow the school’s rules and regulations stipulated in their ‘kasunduan,’ a signed agreement of the school policies.

“Please remind all your students to always observe punctuality and always remember the Kasunduan they and their parents signed, we will be strict in giving sanctions to discipline them

as this school must teach them not only values but also the right conducts of being human,” she uttered.

Catrina Cajes, security guard, observed that students tend to be late for the first class because they were claiming that it is their right to enter the school. Even if they are already late.

“Sa mga nagdaang araw ay pansin na maraming bata ang nalelate dahil alam nila na papayagan silang pumasok ng paaralan,” Cajes claimed.

Also, Cajes noticed that this policy would discipline the students and remind their parents to ensure that their children will wake up early for school and observe punctuality.

“Dahil sa Close Gate policy ay matututo ang mga batang pumasok nang mas maaga at maaabisuhan din ang mga magulang na gisingin ang kanilang mga anak ng maaga at wag hayaang mapuyat.

Laurenciano asked for the help of parents as they are the partners of the school in nurturing and developing the children.

The morning shift class starts at 6 a.m. and they are only given a one hour and 30 minutes grace period but will still be given sanctions as late comers.

DepEd changed their cover photo last January 21, Tuesday, to promote this aim with theme "AI and Education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation.”

The theme emphasizes the significance of balancing human interaction with innovation.

This ambition highlights the DepEd commitment to partner with technology experts in ensuring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly and effectively.

Furthermore, DepEd organized a forum on January 24, Friday at DepEd Central Office Pasig City, that involved both students and teachers who presented their project proposals that will support the advocacy.

DepEd aims for AI to be used in classrooms as support in the delivery of quality education to all Filipino learners. This aligns with global effort to achieve sustainable and responsible advancement of the education system.

Manila gets back ‘Mali’

Wella Mae P. Francisco 9 - Gold Mali, the last elephant in the Philippines, has been brought back to Manila Zoo last December 16, 2024, Monday, after undergoing taxidermy to capture all memories and remains of the elephant.

Her solitary life at the Manila Zoo highlights the devastating impact of habitat loss and poaching on elephant populations, raising some questions about her preservation of this beautiful and iconic species.

As the only elephant in the Philippines, Mali instantly became the center of attention in the country, but Mali's life at the Manila Zoo was not all glamorous as it seems, her stay at the zoo was full of controversy.

The citizens labeled her as "the saddest elephant in the world" as she lived decades alone captured in the zoo.

The Manila Zoo had made considerable efforts to provide Mali with specialized care and a spacious enclosure, however, concerns still remain about her psychological well-being.

On November 28, 2023, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna announced that Mali had died around 3:45 p.m. On that following day the necropsy result was announced, she died of congestive heart failure and had other health issues.

Mali came from Sri Lanka and was gifted to the first lady, Imelda Marcos in 1981, Mali was 11 months old when she came to the Philippines.

People who care about animals were so upset about the bad conditions at Manila Zoo and said that Mali did not get the right medical care, but the zoo thought it was best to keep Mali captured because she had never lived in the wild before.

Instagram and Threads chief, Adam Mosseri, confirmed that the test would involve a small group of brands and the company would monitor feedback to ensure that the ads are relevant to users.

Ads is part of Meta's broader strategy to grow Threads as an alternative to Elon Musk's X, which has faced user and advertiser backlash due to recent policy changes, such as paid subscriptions and reduced content moderation. Most of the identified drug users in Baseco pointed him as the true source of drugs and considered as one of the most valued individuals of PNP.

“Baseco is a very big barangay, we have more or less mga 70k population dito and ang iba rito talaga na e-engage sa mga ganyang bisyo, ung mga nahuhuli namin na nagbebenta ng droga siya ung tinuturo na kinukuhanan,” Gomez stated.

Despite all the evidence with him escaping the buy-bust operation months ago, he was finally caught and now under the custody of the police officers but he still denied it all.

“Hindi po, sa korte na lang po ako magpapaliwanag, sir,” he said.

Devotees of the Black Nazarene expressed their strong faith and thanksgiving for all the blessings they have been receiving.

Traslacion, a Spanish term for ‘passage’ or ‘movement,’ has been a practice of devotion for the Roman Catholics of the country.

They offered prayers during the procession, commemorating the transfer of the image of the Black Nazarene.

They showed cooperation with the authorities for 21 hours and safely ended the sacred event.

“The event ended with peace and success because the public was

cooperative with the PNP,” PNP Chief Rommel Francisco Marbil stated after enduring the long-hour conditions to protect the devotees.

This year’s Traslacion concluded without any fatalities and with fewer medical incidents than the procession last year.

“The number of people who needed medical assistance decreased compared to the numbers during the last Traslacion,” Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan shared her opinion towards the result of this year’s procession.

PARADISE OF WASTES

Hasnina M. Kabasalan, 10 - Agility

Manila has been dealing with waste management problems for years. Recently, the situation has worsened due to operational issues and increasing amounts of garbage.

One big reason is the recent change in garbage collection contractors. The city transitioned from Leonel Waste Management Corporation to MetroWaste Solid Waste Management Corp. and Philippine Ecology Systems Corp. (PhilEco), causing delays and leaving trash uncollected in many parts of the area.

The problem becomes worse during the holidays and Translacion 2025. These events created a huge amount of waste, overwhelming the city’s garbage collection systems.

Manila city officials blamed the previous contractor for not doing its job properly.

However, Leonel Waste Management Corporation claimed that the city owed them

Proactive Governance,Absent in Manila

After all the fun and games, we are met with stench of disappointing management. After the holiday season in the city of Manila, we experienced extreme delays in garbage collections, resulting in mounds of uncollected rubbish. The delays prompted concerns about public health and sanitation among barangays.

There was a dispute between the Leonel Waste Management Corporation and the local government of Manila as claimed in many news outlets. It is caused by the alleged debt in the amount of P561 million that lead to the company's refusal to renew their contract with the city. With better foresight and planning, I believe this event could have been avoided.

Barangay 649, one of the many barangays in Manila to experience the effects of the crisis firsthand. Seeing piles of junk in my community is not new but this was at an unprecedented level.

I do not think this would happen again as

opposed to the last administration of the city, who were far more diligent in maintaining the cleanliness. So, why did this happen under the current leadership? Considering Barangay 649 to be a large poor urban area, it is expected to produce trash almost more than others. When the crisis hit, it was one of the most affected barangays in Manila due to its reliance to the city.

The city should have known that there will be a surge of waste production. With this in mind, the city should have secured and planned the collection of trash. The recent crisis reflects the city s lack of proactive planning in "mundane" matters. I strongly believe that this statement as it took nearly two weeks just to get the garbage collection schedule back to normal.

This matter goes beyond money and contracts, but also about the health and well-being of its citizens. The lack of proactive planning highlights the significant incompetence of the current administration in Manila. If they can fail at something as basic as garbage collection, what else are they failing at?

unfair policies. How much longer can we tolerate leaders who prioritize their own wealth and power while the people suffer?

561.44 million pesos in unpaid fees, which affected their operations.

Another issue is the public’s improper disposal of garbage. Many people don’t follow proper waste segregation, making it harder to manage trash effectively.

The city also lacks enough garbage bins and disposal facilities. This leaves many areas without proper places to throw trash making the problem worse.

The new contractors, MetroWaste and PhilEco, have pledged to improve garbage collection and clear the backlog. But real progress will need cooperation from both the government and the citizens.

The Manila garbage crisis shows the need for better waste management and public responsibility. Without change, health and nature issues will continue to grow.

The citizen clamor for the government to take actions and prioritize this issue, for better Manila.

As the public officials start to do their campaigning strategies, giving broken promises, ambitious platforms, and bribing voters through vote buying, they should complete first their contracted businesses.

Elected leaders are not just promise preachers, but doers and movers of the community. Mayor Honey, do you think this is still funny?

hile debt is a common problem for many governments, it becomes a problem to growth and opportunity when poorly managed like our situation in Manila. Our city is saddled with an enormous P17.8 billion debt left to us by former Mayor Isko Moreno. Now under Mayor Honey Lacuna, we struggle to reconcile the payment of debt against the provision of the basic services. The big question is: how did we get here? And how do we move forward?

I would understand why Lacuna is vocal about the burdens brought by this inherited debt. This year alone, the city of Manila has to pay P2.3 billion, most of it just for the interest. Because of this, funds for education, health and social services have suffered in the city budget. For me, Manila’s financial troubles are not limited to loan payments; they are, instead, due to poor planning and short-term thinking.

Strong communities can fight corruption by helping each other grow through health, education, and work opportunities. When people work together locally, they become less dependent on dishonest leaders. projects funded by these loans were either abandoned without execution or improperly planned, thus wasting resources. To be honest, while I strongly advocate for infrastructure development and modernization drive, this should never come at the tail end of their poor financial management. It is our right as citizens to reap the benefits of not just the glamorous projects, but those that will prove useful and sustainable as well. Unfortunately, it appears that over the past years unworthy political ambitions have triumphed over careful planning.

Lacuna s administration is determined complete unfinished projects rather than write them off. No new loans will be contracted, as promised by the mayor, so that we don't end up in more debt. Instead, her primary focus is on meeting existing obligations while providing necessary services. This is the right approach; however, I know it will not be easy and it will take a lot of time.

Having that said, I think this should not be about blaming leaders of the past. Instead of making enemies, the past and present administrations should focus on working for the good of Manila. I know former Mayor Isko Moreno had good intentions; now the ball is with Mayor Lacuna to maximize what was left behind. Political warfare should not delay Manila's advancement. In the end, ‘Utang ng Maynila’ is a lesson for all.

Dear Editor-in-Chief, Greetings of felicitations and camaraderie!

The Supreme Secondary Learner Government has received numerous concerns from students regarding issues with the school canteen.

As student-body, we deem it necessary to address these concerns and take action to support our fellow students facing difficulties within the school premises.

The primary concerns in our school canteen are “overcrowding and excessive heat due to limited space, lack of organized queuing, pushing and shoving among students, potential harassment, and confusion regarding entrance and exit points.”

We aim to provide solutions to alleviate these concerns, ensuring a safer and comfortable environment for our dear Aquinoians. We humbly request your publication to write an articles that will sympathize our students and will relay concerns to the school administration. The SSLG is convinced that publishing an article on this matter will affect substantial improvements within our school community.

Thank you for continuing your endeavors being the voice of the challenged. We are looking forward to seeing how your publication can contribute to positive changes in our school community.

In the service of leadership, Ariana Mae V. Toriado SSLG President

Canteen concerns: Is it time for a change?

Hasnina M. Kabasalan, 10 - Agility

ur school canteen is supposed to serve the students, but instead, it feels like it is adding to our daily struggles. From overpriced meals to overcrowded spaces and food concerns, the canteen is far from what it should be.

Meals in the canteen are overpriced, and many students cannot afford it. Not every student has enough money to buy their overpriced meals, especially those working students who struggle day and night just to finance their education. Shouldn’t the canteen provide budget-friendly options?

the canteen, which makes it hard for students to buy food. The limited spaces lead to long queue and chaotic situations, like students pushing each other that causes misunderstanding. Is the canteen really big enough?

The vendors bias those who buy a lot over those who have been waiting in line. Where is the fairness when students who are first in the line are ignored just because others are spending more.

There are concerns about food preparation in the canteen, especially for Muslim students who need assurance that their meals are free from pork contamination. Aside from religion, students also wonder if the food served is clean and prepared properly. Is the canteen doing enough to ensure the safety and hygiene for everyone. Another issue that adds another layer of problem is the overcrowding in

The canteen environment is also uncomfortable due to its poor ventilation, making it hot and suffocating for students. How can students enjoy their foods when they are sweating from the heat?

Sectors of education, infrastructure, and health are the maps to ensure the country’s foundation. With the help of these, keys to open doors for a brighter and secured future will knock on every Filipino.

President Bongbong Marcos has approved the 2025 National Budget with a total of 6.32 T. The Department of Education received 1.06 T, the Department of Public Works with 1.01 T, and the Department of Health with 267.8 T are the top three departments to receive the highest allocations.

Canteen can improve students’ experience by offering affordable, healthy foods and maintaining food safety. Expanding the space or improving organization can reduce overcrowding and discomfort.

If the school canteen can only consider the welfare, interests, and safety of the students, we will surely have the best canteen experience.

It is time for the school administration to act. We need fair prices, better food preparation, a larger space, equal treatment, and comfortable environment for all students.

The cult rallied for peace, stopped life at streets

M. Pulga, 9 - Gold

he recent peace rally organized by the Iglesia Ni Cristo in Manila has left doubt as to its true value. Is it really necessary to disrupt the lives of countries residents for a day for noise and chaos. While the intention behind the rally may have been to promote peace, the reality was a disruption of everyday life for numerate citizens. Peace rally or public disturbance? school closed, businesses halted, and the city came to a grand still, all for an event that seemed more like a self-expansion than a genuine building of peace. Although the organizers may have good intension, the reality is that it is a disruption to the daily lives of so many citizens. This has caused problems in our city. The streets, once full of life, were replaced by a chaotic scene of discarded

banners, overflowing trash bins, and intolerable traffic. This is a reminder that sometimes, the pursuit of peace has unexpected consequences.

The rally’s shouting drowned everything, making it difficult to think, especially to work sleep. It feels like our own gatherings are turning against us, making it difficult to find peace. The rally should have been a moment of unity, a burst of inspiration instead, it became an obstacle for me. The noise, the people, the disruption to my daily life, all of these drown out any message of change.

The success of this rally may be questionable. It was spectacle that left chaos, not positive charge. Streets filled with trash, though collected after, and a sense of disruption lingered even after the rally. The negative impact to our community outweighs any positive outcome.

Are these rallies truly working. Think about the noise, disturbance, and the impact on the environment, is it really worth sacrificing the welfare of our community and environment. Just think of it!

Behind the rankings: a system failing its learners

he Philippines always ranked low at the program for the International Student Assessment (PISA). According to Rappler, the country scored approximately 120 points below the average, having scores of 355 in math, 347 in reading, and 356 in science. This puts pressure on students like me to try to get a higher score. I do not only carry the burden for myself but also for my home country.

can ruin not only the country but also the self- resilience of the student.

It has always been common to compare every student to reach a country’s target, resulting in bias and discrimination. For instance, students often get bullied by their classmates if they get a low score. The same goes

For the past years, the national budget has always been passed from the Malacañang to the agencies of the big departments. Did it really come to where it was supposed to be? Filipinos tend to have at least millions of time to see the improving systems and lives of the country. No matter how many digits the budget has, it will not be adequate if it is kept inside our leaders’ wallet. Turning a blind eye for the suffering country but splurging for their own satisfaction. Well, does high position require additional salary while minimum wage earners continue to struggle?

Without the integrity and cooperation of the agencies that control the national budget, every Filipino’s future will stay as blurry as it was. Despite how many actions are promised and planned, it is nonsense if the higher ups will only take one step then sleep after they pocketed the budget. Let’s keep an open eye to not only the amount handed but also how it will be enough not for them but for every Filipino.

Rice price, sky rise

Sandra B. Dimaren, 10 - Excellence ave you ever used your 20 pesos for a rice that was promised to be enough? This is due to only one reason, inflation. Inflation spreads poverty, having a lack of basic necessities such as food, that causes price increase.

For the past years, Filipinos have been shouting for help from the government. Even though President Marcos planned to end the concerns for expensive rice before even being elected, Filipinos are still waiting. Promises were only sent, but actions were never felt.

The Department of Agriculture is positioned to ensure food security for the country. Their job includes the handling of the rice, the farmers, and its distribution. However, the solutions still seem not adequate to help Filipinos overcome the cost of rice. Did they really takeaways for it to be solved?

The Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas or group of farmers fail to agree that DA have done their part. The corrupt traders and rice importers are the real root for this issue which the DA is allegedly hiding from their “band-aid solutions.

From the high up to departments that are supposed to “help and secure” the country, Filipinos are still waiting for the reasonable price of rice. Elected officials such as the president, must fulfill his long-waited 20-peso rice promise.

for other countries, Philippines always gets bullied being low in the rankings.

Many foreign countries unfairly classify Filipinos as unintelligent’ based on these assessments, when in fact this reflects deeper issues in educational management rather than student s potential.

Rather than focusing entirely on rankings, we must recognize the need for systemic reform that fosters learning, supports students, and builds resilience. True progress lies not in numbers, but in nurturing every students’ potential without fear of judgement.

It is as if the whole country depend on students, calculating their every correct answer, because they know that this may lead to another international humiliation, and this can be the cause of discrimination. Even scores can identify students’ intellect, we should not make this as a judgement for the countries that got lower ranks. This

Saturday Classes: Education or Exhaustion?

Hasnina M. Kabasalan, 10 - Agility

aturday classes in the Philippines are often held to make up for lost school days. While this ensures the required number of academic days, it takes away rest time for students and teachers. Should weekends remain dedicated to rest and recovery?

Recently, the Department of Education (DepEd) has considered implementing Saturday classes for SY 2024-2025. This is to address the reduced number of school days under the planned return to the June -to-March academic calendar.

Students may face increased stress and fatigue if Saturdays are used for classes, especially after a week of school. Students need time to rest and recharge after the five-day school week. Do students not deserve a break after a long school week?

Teachers, already burdened with heavy workloads, may struggle to prepare for additional sessions. Also, adding Saturday classes without

proper rest may lead to increase their stress and frustration. Will teachers be given fair additional benefits to compensate for their mental health?

Rest day and family time are also affected by Saturday classes. Students and teachers often rely on weekends to bond with their families or fully rest for their well-being. Should these valuable moments be sacrificed for additional academic days?

Moreover, Saturday classes may affect the quality of teaching and learning. Teachers, who are always overworked, might not perform at their best, and students who are tired may find it harder to concentrate. Would this setup truly lead to better educational outcomes?

DepEd must find a solution that doesn’t compromise the well-being of students and teachers. Adding extra class days might not be the answer, they should prioritize the mental health of both students and teachers. In the end, the real question is: Will Saturday classes be worth the stress they cause for both students and teachers?

Act to improve or an act to remove?

Jamila I. Abdulrahim, 10 - Excellence

s bypassing senior high a step forward or a step too far? “Are students truly prepared to enter college at the age of 16?" This question has sparked the public’s opinion since the implementation of House Bill 11213. Does this bill pave the way for progress and more advancement, or does it offer risks that outweigh the benefits?

The House Bill 11213, titled "An Act Providing Education Pathways for Basic Education Students," were recently approved by the House of Representative which allows graduating junior high school students to choose two different academic paths; the University Preparatory Program and a Technical Vocational Program. Lone Pasig Representative Roman Romulo, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture, stated that the bill, which was recently approved on second reading, allows qualified students to skip senior high school (SHS) and move directly into college, university, or enroll in a technical-vocational program.

So, is a junior high school completer physically and mentally prepared to enter college at the age of 16? In my perspective, no. The K-12 program under the Republic Act No. 10533, was implemented to prepare students for the future, ensuring they aren't overwhelmed or unprepared when facing the challenges of higher education at such a young age. However, if we were to bypass those 2 years, what would it be the consequence for us? If we desire a quality education that will prepare students in the near future, why take shortcuts? There are no shortcuts to achieve a quality education.

“In Honors Exam or advance placement examination shall be made available to graduating Grade 10 students, providing them the

opportunity to bypass senior high school (Grades 11 and 12), upon successful completion and passing of said exam,” the lawmaker stated.

While the idea of allowing students to bypass senior high school and jump straight into college through an advanced placement exam might seem like a time and money-saving, it fails to acknowledge the full value and purpose of senior high school education. Senior high school is more than just a bridge to higher education, it's where students begin to mature socially, emotionally, and intellectually.

Since the Philippines adopted the K-12 program in 2013, it was designed to improve the quality education by allowing students to gain competencies that will better prepare them for higher education and workforce.

However, House Bill 11213 appears to contradict the K-12 system's purpose. Allowing students to skip two crucial years of education that may hinder their intellectual, social, and emotional development.

Students now, are so ill prepared for college, whether mentally or emotionally, and we're currently behind in reading, math and science compared to other countries. Yet the solution they proposed was to reduce the number of years before college?

We are currently lacking units that is why when a Filipino professional wants to practice their profession outside the country, they have to study again.

The Philippines needs long-term dedication to increase the standard of education, not just another reform that promises immediate advantages. We need a system that bridges the gaps between urban and rural schools, strengthens curriculum, improves schools, and invests in teachers. We need an education system that prepares students not just to get jobs, but to thrive in them, regardless of whether they choose an academic or vocational path.

SATURDAY CLASS: PASS OR CRASH?

Isn’t the goal of the DepEd to make sure that all students are learning? The Department of Education implemented make-up classes that happen during Saturdays. But every Saturday isn’t just a free day for each student, it means family and opportunity.

Due to numerous and unexpected class suspensions happening, conducting Saturday class is the way for students to catch up missed tasks. Shorter school year will also be achieved, which desired by many, bringing back the traditional school calendar.

School ending in March 2025 will only have a total of 165 days, and not meeting the 180 days minimum of school is also their concern. However, these numbers aren’t crucial if the students won’t be gaining knowledge.

Real Talk: Grades don’t matter to us

Charlotte Tiffany Jane Mira, 10 - Agility rades are not crucial, grades only measure our learning ability, range of skills, and knowledge. It does not define who we are as individuals. Grades only reflect our understanding of certain subjects, and it does not define our capability if we are smart or not.

The pressure to achieve good grades often lead to stress, anxiety, and most of the time cheating. This can negatively impact a student’s mental health and overall well-being. That might be the cause why some students are caught cheating during exams to pass because of the fear of failing.

Some students fail to grasp the subject matter. Before exams, many students memorize the information without truly understanding it. Additionally, some students do homework by simply searching an answer to google and do not understanding it which may lead to a lack of critical thinking , creativity, problem-solving, or any other important skills.

We should just focus on learning and understanding the materials instead of just aiming for good grades. With this, we can engage more in learning the subject and have meaningful experience.

Our grades do not determine our worth and potential. We may struggle in one subject, but we may excel in others, achieve unique talents that we may not know about and have a bright future in the future. their loved ones and do outside or extra-curricular activities won’t motivate them. Their academic performance, as well as their overall health will also be at risk. Has DepEd ever consider students’ well-being?

Students feel to disagree that they are slowly turning into robots. Not allowing them a chance to rest seems to be the intention of DepEd.

If the students’ minds and bodies are shutting, then absorbing and applying their lessons will become an imagination. That will show what the DepEd really has and long for an impossible solution.

As a result, Saturday classes are not only inefficient but also hinder the students' ability to achieve. DepEd must realize that truly supporting, not only making the students suffer, is enough for them to get what they should long for, and that is educating every student.

‘Bagong Pilipinas’ a pledge and hymn we didn’t ask for Hasnina M. Kabasalan, 10 - Agility

hen the “Bagong Pilipinas” hymn and pledge were introduced during flag raising ceremonies, I did not know what to feel. It seemed like a disgraceful change to a tradition I have grown up with, and it felt unfamiliar.

At first, I thought it was just another way to inspire love for the country and unity. But the more I saw it, the more it felt like a political move rather than a genuine call for national pride.

As a student, I wonder why this pledge and hymn suddenly became mandatory. Should love for the country be something we feel naturally, not something we are told to do? government instead of uplifting Filipinos.

TRolled W

My classmates said they felt confused reciting the pledge and singing the hymn. It is hard to connect with something that feels like it glorifies an administration rather than the whole nation. While we are being asked to say these words, Filipinos are still struggling with real problems like poverty, unemployment, and inflation. Wouldn’t it be better if the government focused on solving the issues instead of creating new symbols?

Real love for the country is shown through action, not just through lyrics of the songs. Programs that improve education, jobs, and opportunities for all would inspire unity better than a pledge or human ever could. In the end, I think we, as students, deserve to share how we feel about these changes. The flag raising ceremony should be a moment of hope and pride, not a time to question what these symbols truly mean.

Its definition states that it is done to make people feel secure but not fulfilling public safety in reality.

Are those only the places where the security theater happens? The answer is on the law enforcers whose job is to make sure that the country's future and elections poll are safe. As no Filipino can fail to disagree that it has not happened.

Providing more security guards, weapons, and more advanced technology will strengthen security. These are the real solutions that higher ups think that law enforcers should do.

However, showing that more than just “security theater” law enforcers can act is not adequate to prove that harm is not around during elections. How about the one who causes it? This question remains silenced as every Filipino knows that money answers louder.

The issue regarding elections is still not over despite how many times higher ups could find the key to this problem. Filipinos aim is to have a reliable and bright future for the country. This in return led to many complaints and loss of learning among students regarding traditions and sports. Being busy as a teacher in grading papers is a given but making it heavier by being a coach worsens it.

Students would agree that their education in music, art, physical education, and health are in conflict or otherwise in danger. Days of learning becomes hours of waiting, instead of teaching becomes a day of nothing.

Palarong Maynila was held in January with a variety of sports like volleyball, badminton, and chess competing against different schools. Before and during this time, MAPEH teachers became coaches and used their time of teaching to training instead.

The third quarterly assessment is nearing, lessons are still missing, time is nearing, it is ending, and students are left thinking. If this issue is not resolved yet, the grades of students and their learning are at risk, especially when DepEd are rushing things in their own way.

Is this what they mean by better education? Student just sitting instead of learning? This issue is our hands to manage, we students ought to fight for what is right, to let education continue and make learning easy.

In our current situation, these statements don t seem possible, even probable. Why can't the MAPEH department just think of the idea of having separate teachers for teaching and coaching? If this is not implemented yet what could be the future of us, students, what could be of the future of PCCAHS?

Transforming Lives: School Head’s Journey

Reynora V. Laurenciano, School Principal I

n my seven months as School Head of Pres. Corazon C. Aquino High School, I have seen how important this institution is for the students in Baseco. Many of them come from underprivileged families who rely on jobs like garbage collecting, cleaning mussels, and peeling garlic for their livelihood.

This challenging reality has strengthened my belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.

That s why I always remind students during programs and flag ceremonies to persevere in their studies, no matter how hard life gets. I am grateful to have gained the trust of many students, especially those who come to my office expressing their desire to quit school.

Classroom Shortage

S. Labisto, 10 - Agility

he increasing educational challenges in the shortage of classrooms have come to be an urgent issue in many schools, a factor that affects student learning experiences and the quality of education.

Decreased academic performance, more distractions, and trouble for teachers to provide each student with attention are all possible outcomes of overcrowding.

Insufficient facilities force students to share desks, sit on the floor, or attend classes in the corridors and areas not conducive for learning.

Delays in school infrastructure projects, rapid population increase, and insufficient funding are usually the causes of this issue.

In order to solve this problem, government agencies and schools must build more classrooms, hire more teachers, and strive to distribute funds efficiently for the Benefit of all.

he BASECommunity, represented by its resilient Aquinoians, shows dedication in ensuring that all its students attend daily schooling, yet many struggle with deep reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. That is why the Department of Education (DepEd) is actively seeking effective practices to foster a love of reading among learners.

Despite teachers dedicated efforts during the Phil-IRI reading assessment, many Filipino junior high students struggle with reading comprehension, the challenge motivates students to further improve their reading skills and appreciate their long-term benefits.

To end bullying in and out

Renso James B. Cuyson, 10 - Agility

Bullying is a widespread issue that affects individuals in different age groups and settings. It is a repeated aggressive behavior aimed at harming or threatening another person that can occur in many forms, from physical violence and threats to verbal abuse, discrimination, and cyberbullying. The effects of bullying can be devastating, leading to emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts in the victims.

Children who engage in bullying behavior such as witnessing domestic violence or experiencing lack of parental supervision are more likely to have been influenced by their surroundings in which such behavior thrives. Studies have shown childhood bullying experiences an increased risk of depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) later in life. Addressing bullying is not just about protecting individual victims but about fostering a safer and healthier society for all.

Effective strategies for combating bullying involve a multi-pronged approach. Schools and parents who play an important role should take initiative in creating a culture of respect, open communication, consistent discipline and empathy through comprehensive anti-bullying programs which focus on educating students about bullying and establishing clear consequences to prevent children from becoming bullies or victims.

“Students often lack a clear understanding of the Phil-IRI assessment's purpose, viewing it as an irrelevant task focused only on grades, as reflected in their comment, “di naman kasama sa grade yan,” which hides their interests in reading. This unwanted disconnect frustrates teachers who are determined to shift students' mindsets to recognize the long-term value of reading and comprehension.

“What is Hijab?” The hijab or in Arabic language means a barrier is one of the most recognizable symbols of Islam specifically in Muslim women. It is more than just a piece of fabric; it represents modesty, identity, and faith for millions of Muslim women around the world. The hijab serves as an identity that reflects their modesty and strong faith and beliefs or what is called the ‘Iman’.

“Is wearing a Hijab mentioned in the Holy Qur’an?” The hijab is mentioned specifically only twice in the Qur’an, once in Surah 24, An-Nur (The Light), and once in Surah 33, Al-Ahzab (The Clans).

“Then, what is the purpose of covering oneself?” Surah An-Nur (The Light) “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof”

In the verse of Qur’an (24:31), the purpose of covering oneself is to protect one’s modesty, avoid attracting undue attention, and maintain a respectful appearance.

“How does Hijab protect Muslim women?” The Hijab is to protect women from evil eyes. And referring to this, Allah says: “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” Surah Al-Ahzab (33:59)

Prophet Muhammad, considered the final prophet of God, is central to Islamic belief. Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam to Muhammad through the Angel Gabriel The Qur’an is considered the literal word of God and guides Muslims in all aspects of their lives.

Islamic civilization achieved great advancements in science, mathematics, philosophy, and the arts. Islamic architecture, famous for its ornate designs and beautiful mosques, is recognized around the world. Islamic calligraphy and art are also praised for their beauty and precision.

In this verse (33:59) Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to tell the women of his family and the believing women to cover themselves with outer garments. The hijab acts as a protection against harm, such as the “evil eye” or ill intentions.

“Is Wearing the Hijab an Obligation?” Islamic scholars generally agree that these verses establish hijab as an obligation rather than a preference. The commands in these verses are directed to “believing women” and are understood to mean that covering is a part of adhering to Islamic teachings on modesty.

“Is Not Wearing a Hijab a Sin in Islam?” According to the Holy Qur’an, wearing a hijab is a must. A woman who does not wear a hijab or finds difficulty wearing it is definitely committing a sin.

In the verse of Surah Al-Ahzab (33:36) Allah says, “It is not fitting for a believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if anyone disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path”.

In Islam, the Hijab is a religious obligation that a Muslim woman has to observe. It is understandable from the Qur’an, the words of Almighty Allah. Also, it serves as a symbol of faith, modesty, and identity, reflecting the values and beliefs that guide a Muslim woman’s life.

EIDAL-FITR’, EIDAL-ADHA: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Hasnina M. Kabasalan, 10 - Agility

The Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fit’r celebrates the end of Ramadan, the holy month when Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise until sunset. Muslims are allowed to eat and drink throughout the day for the first time after their Ramadan fast. Eid al-Fitr’ translates to ‘festival of breaking the fast.’

The first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month in the Islamic lunar calendar, are dedicated to celebrating Eid al-Fit’r. The sighting of the new moon marks the official start of Eid al-Fit’r. Zakat al-Fit’r, is the Three Pillars of Islam, a unique kind of charity given to the poor and needy before the Eid al-Fit’r prayer.

After cleansing themselves and putting on new or clean clothing, Muslims worldwide gather for communal prayer at sunrise on the first morning of Eid al-Fit’r. Muslims express their appreciation to Allah by celebrating Eid al-Fit r with the traditional greeting, Eid Mubarak,” which translates to “Blessed Eid.”

In contrast, Eid l al-Adha, celebrates on the 10th day of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, which is the final month in the Islamic calendar. The hajj, pilgrimage, at Minā, Saudi Arabia, near Mecca, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and culminates around the time of Eid al-Adha. The ‘feast of sacrifice’ means Eid al-Adha.

Eid al-Adha also reminds the Muslims about the story of willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah’s command. However, Allah sent the angel Jibreel with a ram to sacrifice instead of Ismail.

Many Muslims do the Qurbani, also called ‘Udhiya,’ which is the Islamic practice of offering an animal as a sacrifice, during the Eid l al-Adha celebration. For Muslims who can afford it, qurbani is wajib or obligatory. It is Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim when sacrificing his son Ismail and to remind Muslims of the importance of gratitude to Allah.

To sum up, Eid al-Fit’r celebrates the end of fasting and self-discipline during the Ramadan, while Eid al-Adha honors Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to Allah.

For Muslims, prayer, or Salah, is a key act of worship for Muslims and a means of connecting with Allah. It is performed five times a day. These prayers are performed at dawn (Fajr), midday (Dhuhr), afternoon (Asr), sunset (Maghrib), and night (Isha).

When starting the prayer, Muslims carry out wudu (ablution), a purification ritual. Wudu is a very important part of salah that every Muslim must do before their prayer. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “No salah is accepted without wudu (purification)”.

Muslims recite the Shahada and the Dua after finishing wudu. The Shahada is a declaration of faith: "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." Then Dua is recited: "O Allah, make me among those who seek repentance and make me among those who purify themselves.

Before starting, Muslims make an internal intention (niyyah) to pray for Allah’s sake. It begins by raising their hands to ears and saying “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is Greater). After saying it, They lower their hands and place the right hand over the left, just above the navel for both men and women's chest. While standing, Muslims recites the Du'a al-Istiftah, it is the "Opening Prayer" in Islam, recited at the beginning of the five daily prayers.

Muslims begin prayer by reciting Surah Al-Fatiha and additional verses. Next, they bow (Ruku) while saying “Allahu Akbar,” placing their hands on their knees and keeping their back straight. In this position, they praise Allah three times, saying “Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem” (How perfect is my Lord, the Magnificent).

Afterward, they stand upright, saying, “Sami’a Llahu liman hamidah” (Allah hears those who praise Him), followed by, “Rabbana walakal hamd” (Our Lord, to You is all praise). Then comes Sujud where they place their forehead, nose, palms, knees, and toes on the ground while saying, “Subhana Rabbiyal A‘la” (How perfect is my Lord, the Most High), three times. After the Sujud, they sit briefly, asking for forgiveness by saying, “Rabbigh-fir li” (O my Lord, forgive me), three times before performing the next Sujud with the same praises. In the last Rak’ah, Muslims perform the Tashahhud while seated. Both hands are placed on the thighs while reciting the Tashahhud: it is a significant part of the Muslim prayer (Salah) that is recited while sitting in the final rak’ah (unit of prayer).

In this country, wherein same-sex marriage still seems like hope that feels out of reach, many Filipino teachers who identify themselves as members of LGBTQIA+ community struggle to balance their personal lives with a society that does not fully accept their relationships and also because of how society views them and the lack of legal rights for their relationships. While others find joy in their work, focusing on teaching young people and being content with what they have, teachers who are part of the LGBTQIA+ face crisis beyond classrooms.

The absence of same-sex marriage in the Philippines brings a distinct set of challenges to LGBTQIA+ teachers. They are forced to choose between living authentically or protecting their careers, often fearing

Nowadays, people have different views on how being single affects their daily life activities. Others say that being single has affected them in many ways, while others say the otherwise. The real question is, which is which?

Joven C. Bautista, Science teacher, shared his answer to why he is still single until now. "I have other priorities I want to accomplish before I get married." This means he intends to love someday, just not now. He has other things he wants to do before he falls in love and gets married. He stated that being single does not mean he opposes those who manage to be in a relationship while being in a race to reach their goals and expectations. He explained his side, particularly among younger generations. He feels empowered by his choice to remain single, viewing it as a valid lifestyle that prioritizes individual happiness over societal expectations.

In contemporary society, there is an increasing tendency to opt for a single lifestyle, and educators are not an exception. Many teachers give preference to the self-improvement, self-development, career goals, and personal lives of those who choose to be single.

Let us all remember the spirit of independence; attempting to prioritize ourselves first is never wrong. It can strengthen the trust we had in ourselves. Allowing us to explore things, personal growth, self-discovery, and fulfillment, so that the next time we open the door for romantic relationships, we can ensure that our identity is not solely tied to another person, promoting a healthier dynamic if a relationship does develop later on.

It is also important that we take care of ourselves, learn to love ourselves so that when we love someone, we can also love them. For now, let us not rush because the day will come when we will love, get married, and of course, the pain in a relationship will not disappear. We cannot avoid the pain, so to lessen the pain, we should first learn many things so that when we are ready, we can truly love them wholeheartedly.

True love waits no matter how long and whatever unforeseen circumstances there may be. The person that Is meant for you for eternity will stay and definitely will wait until all your suffering, struggles, and sorrow turn into a bliss of joy.

discrimination or even losing their jobs. This struggle can have an enormous impact on their lives, making them think carefully about who they date, how they commit to relationships, and how they live their lives every day.

John Avelon Del Rosario, MAPEH teacher, talks about how his job affects his ability to be open about who they are. He said, “I think as teachers, we need to accept the fact that there are a lot of teachers and students who are part of the community and we need to accept them with no discrimination against them as we still hope and pray that labelling among the members will end.” this message reflects the realities being faced by our LGBTQIA+ teachers

They choose to remain single; they choose to focus on their career and family. As long as they love what they are doing and they do not step on someone just for their relationship. Others are fearing the judgment and discrimination they might face if they were to openly express their love for a partner, and they cannot fully be themselves and build happy, healthy relationships. This community wishes the SOGIE bill will soon become a law because this would stop the acts of meanness from happening among people due to a person's identity; hence, this is a great move in making everyone treated fairly in the Philippines.

This would be a big claim that the Philippines is a country where everybody is welcome, and having diverse identities of people is appreciated. This proves that they are significant members of the Filipino community and should be dealt with fairness.

How exactly can a heartbreak affect our romantic desires? Especially when there are unclear goodbyes and misunderstandings that affect a person's desire to move forward. How can a person cope with the scar left by love itself?

Nowadays, others find it easy to take a risk when they fall in love they take risks here, there, and whenever they want to. Looking more thoroughly, it appears that this generation has also endured the most heartbreak. When you hurry, love, it does not work out, and that's exactly the problem of the youngsters nowadays.

As a matter of fact, many people tend to disregard their thirst for love due to feeling afraid to get hurt again. Haunted by the ghost left by the previous broken love oath. And also the broken trust caused by the unfulfilled promises lies behind each sweet word and betrayal.

"For me, I'd rather get myself busy teaching than to involve myself in love again," a high school teacher stated in response to a question asked if she is willing to have a romantic attachment to someone once more. Heartbreak can affect all of us may it be physically or mentally. Hence, there are many ways of coping people do to make themselves get over an experience or someone.

"I would rather focus on my career for now than try again," she added. Based on her experience, her past relationship did not make her gain anything, nor was there an effort done. Being single is better than staying in a relationship with one-sided love. When they got hurt in the name of love, many changes had been done. Such as getting distracted and unable to focus on their tasks and getting pressured. It's really true that love is fun, but at the same time it's also painful.

Furthermore, people should realize their value and raise their standards. They should not base it on the appearance but rather on the attitude and actions. There is a saying that people are more beautiful on the inside than on the outside, which is true and proven.

At some point, we're all going to come up with a question like "Why do nice people choose the wrong people to date?" an honest concern that can make us all stop and think why. Is it because we love them too much that we don't see their red flags? or is it because we accept the love we think we deserve?

Those questions remain unanswered, same as why they remain single. Hurt people are single, not because they deserve it, they are just victims of the love they once give.

relationship, that’s when you will understand how restricted your actions can become."

In the generation we now exist in, breadwinners are the ones who put in extra efforts. And maybe, sometimes even they even forget to put themselves first. But what is their reason for being single?

Bernadeth V. Palaganas, Filipino teacher, was asked about the reasons for her single status. According to her statement, she is the 'Breadwinner' of their family. "I remain single to focus on myself, particularly my family, who also rely on me." Therefore, she chose herself for her own benefit and for her family's sake.

"It's always a challenging job for me, particularly since I am the only person my parents can depend on," she remarked.

In addition, she also added to her statement that there is still another reason for her said status, "because when you enter a

Although everyone knows that the term "BREADWINNER" is a family's best hope, are we aware of the struggles and sacrifices that they had to do in order to earn this title? "I am the only one my family can rely on" she added. With this being said, you will know how much a person had sacrificed for something especially "the only one" being said.

This declaration reveals that she is not only a provider but is also deeply affected by her previous relationship, leading her to concentrate more on achieving the best outcomes.

The responsibility that the breadwinners carry holds a significant role in society. to strive for their very best. They sought work not solely for their own benefits but for their family also.

To this day onwards, let us all remember that being a breadwinner is never easy. Sacrificing your desire and tiring yourself all day just to bring food

to the table will never be easy. Being the "last straw" of the family will forever be difficult, no choice but to keep shining like a star amidst the difficulties there are.

Breadwinners tend to put their family's needs ahead of their own. In the present society, the role that they have is crucial. The absence of the support of other family members had made them struggle.

Although, this responsibility is not forever, it is still a lot for some of them to miss many of the happenings in their surroundings. Even after finally getting free from aiding their family's needs, getting into a relationship would still not be their first concern.

Though, the majority of the breadwinners still wish to pursue the activities they could not do previously, getting in a relationship would not be their first option. Personal growth, self discovery, and trust in themselves are what they want to achieve before they open their doors for love. And once that time comes, these breadwinners will remain soft hearted for the new person in their life, the love of their lives.

The Philippines has witnessed a significant shift in fashion trends among its younger generation. They are inspired by the American style, students are increasingly embracing street wear outfit, popularly known as "paldas/skirts".

The rise of social media platforms has exposed the youth to the international fashion trends such as American street wear. Characterized by casual, comfortable clothing such as graphic t-shirts, distressed denim jeans, sneakers, and baseball caps, strongly resonates with students in the Philippines. It all started when Kiel The Great, A Filipino content-creator on TikTok posted a video of him wearing a skirt in public. The video gained a lot of views so people, especially teens started to copy or are inspired by his outfit.

"It's more than just a fashion statement; it's about expressing myself and being part of a larger community." a 15-year-old student said. Sentiment echoes the feelings of the young who find solace in this laid-back, yet stylish aesthetic.

The influence of American street wear outfit on Filipinos is also attributed to the country's long association with American culture. The historic ties between the two countries have fostered a deep appreciation when it comes to American music, movies, and even fashion.

Filipino students are not merely mimicking American fashion; they are also adding their own twist to it. Local brands have emerged, incorporating traditional Filipino elements into street wear designs.

The future of street wear in the Philippines looks bright, with young people continually pushing the boundaries of fashion and self-expression. As this style evolution unfolds, one thing is certain – the youth will remain at the forefront, inspiring others with their unique blend of American flair and Filipino flair.

As the street wear phenomenon continues to sweep across the Philippines, it's clear that teenagers are not just following a trend – they're crafting their own fashion narrative.

Respect is important to give honor to a culture. Respecting each other will recognize that they will no longer be ashamed of their cultures. Be open-minded when it comes to different cultures, approach them with respect, and be willing to learn different things from their culture.

Through listening and participating in activities that reflect the culture of each other, we can show our appreciation for their tradition and open communication to serve as a bridge to promote unity. Unity comes from accepting that our differences are not obstacles but bridges to a better future ahead of us.

In the shared culture, when they have a goal they want to reach, there is unity in shared culture, understanding, and respect. When everyone works for the good of the majority, it gains every person's trust. Through the efforts of people, trust is built.

In celebrating the differences of each culture, we accept our differences wholeheartedly. We have to celebrate our differences, even if you are black or white. Every culture carries its own stories, traditions, languages, and ways of thinking. By acknowledging and honoring these differences, we create an environment full of respect and understanding, where people can share their thoughts without fear and judgment.

Celebrating cultural differences creates a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and understood. When we appreciate and accept each other's backgrounds, it strengthens our relationship. This respect for diversity brings people closer, making it easier for everyone to work together.

Respect and unity are developed in a shared culture. When the same culture embraces each other's differences, such as race, color, language, and religion. By acknowledging and accepting these differences, there is respect and unity that opens each other up, thus deepening their association and trust.

The minimalist style of Japan, often called "Zen minimalism," is a profound cultural expression that blends aesthetics with philosophy. Rooted in centuries of tradition, this style highlights simplicity, functionality, and a deep connection to nature, reflecting the values of the Japanese way of life.

At its core, Japanese minimalism is changed by Zen Buddhism, which advocates for a clear mind and a simple lifestyle. This philosophy is inserted in the concept of "wabi-sabi," which finds beauty in imperfection and transience. Wabi-sabi promotes an appreciation for the natural world and the passage of time, leading to a design ethos that favors organic materials, muted colors, and asymmetrical forms. In architecture, Japanese minimalism is defined by open spaces, natural light, and a seamless integration with the environment.

A lot of students in the Philippines adapted this type of lifestyle, mostly in wearing aesthetic clothes because of the simplicity, cleanliness, and exquisite looks it gives. Students usually combine it with their school uniforms to add style.

The minimalist style of Japan is more than just an aesthetic; it is a way of life that embodies simplicity, mindfulness, and a deep appreciation and connection for the natural world. It offers a refreshing perspective in today's messy environment, inviting individuals to slowdown, reflect, and seek beauty in the essential. As this style extends its influence, it serves as a hint of the power of minimalism in the school fashion trends.

This minimalism trend may also help raise modesty for most of our female teenagers. Making them look more demure and mindful in such a way, that is pleasing for the eyes. This reflects how someone's outfit can describe the beauty in simplicity.

It is rare for us to see someone wear a modest clothing in these times. With all the revealing outfits and such, it is easy to forget that formal attire still exists. But here exists thiis style that most teenagers love.

The global KPOP (Korean popular music) influence has sparked a dazzling flood of colors and styles inside youth. Their favorite KPOP group now dominates their music playlist and outfit choices. Even uniforms are no longer dominant over most of the universities in the Philippines.

Mode of dressing has changed with students inspired by the trendy and spirited clothing of KPOP idols. Fashion has caused these trends of styles invoked by young Filipinos; hence, the increase for Korean wearers, accessories, and even beauty products is becoming highly evident.

For now, the young interests in the country do not limit themselves when it comes to fashion. They acquire well with others who tend to the Korean mode.

The popularity of KPOP fashions indeed developed more cultural exchange between the Philippines and South Korea. The students from the Philippines instead become exposed to diverse cultures through fashion and music created by the Korean phenomenon, further enhanced by television-watching activities of various Korean programs.

"As a bisexual, I am proud of being myself, even though I am different in their eyes. I can still be able to do what I want, and I have friends, family, and people who still love me and accept me. Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community is not an ignominy as long as we learn to accept ourselves. So, to the people who have not yet accepted themselves as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, I will give a big support and be a good example to accept themselves, and they should not be ashamed or afraid because they will have our support, and the world will not end if many people will not accept them."

The increasing number of people are defying social norms and standing up for their own identities in a world that is frequently characterized by strict classification. Spearheading in this societal change is the queer community, which includes a wide variety of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and more (LGBTQIA+).

For many LGBTQIA+ persons, the journey to self-discovery is a challenge and often breaking for some. It might be challenging to get acceptance because it requires navigating complex family dynamics and dealing with social stigma. Telling your loved ones who you really are or coming out to them might be nerve-wracking . Authenticity is often overshadowed by fear of rejection, discrimination, and misunderstanding.

John Robert A. Piad is a brave person who's ready to share his experience, struggles, and achievements as a queer and part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

"As a part of LGBTQ+, I show those I meet more that I can do it, and I'm not just giving up because I want them to realize that being part of the LGBTQIA+ is not an obstacle to making dreams come true. This young man is James Moreno of 10-Quality, his journey is a reminder that we all have the power to overcome adversity and create a more inclusive world. His journey began not on a stage but amidst a storm of hateful words. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, he endured a constant barrage of slurs and insults "bakla," "salot," and "malaki katawan" hurled by those who failed to understand or accept his identity. But these attacks, instead of breaking him, ignited a fire within. They became the fuel for his advocacy, the driving force behind his decision to enter the world of pageants. He would use this platform to challenge stereotypes and to show the world that being gay and being a plus-size man is something to be celebrated, not ridiculed.

His path hasn't been easy. He experienced firsthand the prejudice that exists not only outside but also within the community. The unfair judgments and generalizations labeled to an individual often cast a shadow over the entire group. He sees it as a call for greater self-acceptance and a deeper understanding, both within and outside his community. He believes that shared humanity, the capacity for love, loss, and pain, should unite them, not divide them. His participation in pageants is more than just a competition but it is a powerful statement. His message is simple yet profound; his identity, his size these things do not diminish his worth. He chooses to transform his experiences into a force for positive change, fighting for a world where everyone is accepted, respected, and celebrated for who they truly are, aiming to end the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

Last Chance, Last Change:

The World Is Ending, WhatAre You Doing?

Jasmin S. Usman, 10 - Excellence

What would you do, if you were to know that the end of the world is near? Given the chance to ignore it. You hold the choice. Are you willing to try and change that fate before it’s too late?

The end of the world, some say that it is about to happen. It is a concept that explores many countless myths, religion, and beliefs of many. Natural disaster is one of a factor that is believed to have a significant role on how the world is going to end. Just how crazy nature works.

Imagine a tsunami that can surpass the world’s largest mountain. Surviving it is likely to be impossible. An earthquake that is enough to bury the whole of humanity including the history of all the living organisms. On the other hand, it is important to know that behind all that humans also take a big part in this. Human carelessness with nature also plays a big part in this topic.

Climate change, solid waste, landslides, war, and terrorism are things that are caused by humans. The problem already starts there, although people might not see it as a big deal.

It is a sign that people should start taking things seriously before it’s too late. Start looking outside and feel nature's suffering. The change needs to start from you.

Give back to nature and return its favor, use it for good. Sharing blessings and returning kindness can be a start.

Take care of the ocean, forest, animals and plants. Stop thinking that a little trash wouldn’t hurt. This planet earth is replaceable, humanity shares one oxygen given by nature.

Give it all you’ve got because this planet is all we’ve got. In the end the people had the choice whether they allow the end of the world or save it from crashing down.

In a school where resilience, acceptance, and tolerance are challenged, the realization of the LGBTQIA+ community is tough because of the criticism and discrimination they always encounter. Unveiling their identity is harrowing considering the judgment of the people around them, which can cause them to lose their self-confidence and self-esteem. A lot of courage is needed for them to come out mainly to their loved ones if they're religious and homophobic. However, Bhem J. Sobisol of 10 - Optimism is a pioneering student; the unseen chapter is finally unfolding. She is raring to share her experience, achievements, and the long journey that she took.

Bhem J. Sobisol is a unique and impressive member of the LGBTQIA+ community, she excels consistently in her academics, she became Top 3 in Edukasyon Sa Pagpapakatao, Top student in Mathematics and Overall Top 6 in their class. She also won in various school contests by being the 1st place in EcoTeen 2023, Champion in character parade, and also the new EcoTeen 2024 champion.

Being part of the LGBTQIA+ community is not an obstacle. It's not stopping you from the things you wanted and the things that you can do.

"To show that each of us, especially LGBTQIA+ students, has the ability to shine and succeed. I use this platform to remind everyone that being part of our community is not a limitation; rather it is a strength that gives us a unique perspective and creativity, Bhem said.

Even though her family accepted her and the community around her embraces her identity, she still can't escape from the disparity and unfairness. people who are still uncomfortable with their identity; they still can't fully embrace the identity a person has. We can't force people to accept us for who we are. But it is not a valid reason to disrespect and criticize the community. Acceptance and tolerance are just simple act of kindness.

Time passes by and so do all the living organisms,” Everything has its end” they say, but the remains and proof of living doesn’t go.” Would it be considered selfish to keep those remains?” a question where people answered yes and no. Taxidermy is an art of preserving an animal’s body by skinning it and mounting it on a form. The purpose of taxidermy is to create a lifelike representation of an animal. Scientists use taxidermy to display animals in history museums with both the purpose of education and aesthetic. It is a way to preserve an animal body, so it still looks like it was alive.

Even with the purpose of taxidermy explained many netizens were still triggered. Mali, an elephant that is the only captive in the country and was known for being the saddest elephant due to her long decade isolation, went in the process of taxidermy after its death.

Hearing Mali’s story the public weren’t happy about it. “Imagine being trapped in a captivity for years to “entertain” people and even after your death you're still being exploited, “a netizen commented on reddit. Other feedback from the public says that it can be harmful because it often involves killing animals. “Ethical taxidermy means that animals should not be killed, they should be sourced from natural death,” Amber Maykut, a taxidermist said.

Furthermore, many pet owners turn to taxidermists to preserve their loved ones. Love can really make you do things that are sometimes unbelievable. Well, you can’t blame them, a scientist who wants to share the history by preserving it, and a pet owner who can’t let go of their pets. What about the respect of life to those animals?

While taxidermy can serve educational purposes, it raises significant ethical dilemmas regarding animal rights and respect for life. It is increasingly important to navigate emotional landscapes with care and respect.

More than preserving and educating, it is also necessary to balance educational benefits with ethical considerations. Respect should be given to all.

Do you define your grades or does Al? As Al (artificial intelligence) becomes more accessible to the public, it eventually reaches students who need help with their learning obligations, at first this provided them the information, assistance and guidance that they are looking for, but as the time passes by, they became more dependent in using this for almost all of their school activities.

As students' school life becomes easier and manageable because of the recent emerging apps and website such as ChatGPT, Cici, Gauthmath, Meta ai and etc. we also can't turn a blind eye on its negative side.

These apps made them to be more overly reliant on the usage of these types of technology for their personal gains like their grades and reputation, often overlooking the fact that they are becoming unaware that Al is taking over their own skills and capacity to think and do tasks on their own.

Moreover, the increasing reliance on AI in academic tasks raises concerns about the decreasing of creativity and critical thinking among students. Additionally, by depending heavily on AI-generated solutions, they risk losing the ability to solve problems independently and develop unique perspectives, which are crucial for personal and professional growth.

There is a love-hate relationship between Al and students, while students are using Al as a tool to lighten their workload, on the other hand, like a drug to students, Al is both addictive and self- destructive to the student's own expressiveness as it restricts their own thoughts and replace them with predetermined answers. Is our future really in our own hands if Al's the one making the decisions?

Wastes Turn Ways for Sustainable BASECommunity through Research Initiatives

Building Blocks from Plastic Waste Materials

In a recent research project, a group of students from Pres. Corazon C. Aquino High School utilized non-biodegradable materials such as plastic wastes, and Styrofoam cups to create a versatile building material and help the environment. Tons of plastic waste pose a significant problem in the solid waste management in Manila, one of the major problems of the city.

In BaseCommunity, located in the heart of Manila, a lot of these solid waste are thrown in the shore, floating above the black surface. This situation endangers health, biodiversity, and water and food safety in the community.

The researchers' concern of the environment leads them to their idea of developing an FCB (Fiber Cement Block) with plastic materials, aiming to recycle plastic wastes in mind. Research on plastic became one of the most prominent subjects over the years where the main idea revolves.

According to the researchers, the reuse of plastic materials in the production of cement or mortar is noticeably an environment friendly solution for getting rid of plastic wastes. The researchers' aim is to find the potential use of plastic wastes as aggregates to be used like gravel, and sand in FCBs.

Therefore, they researched repeatedly to find the best ways to use bits of plastic waste to be mixed with cement to create concrete.

With extensive preliminary research at their disposal, they leveraged this and started their experiments. Consisting of three sessions, they planned to create a successful arrangement. When preparing the plastic, they minced and shredded the material to better fit their work, mixed with cement, seashells, and sand.

In the early development of their research, the students dedicated their time conducting their very first trial in the project. As research always is, it fails on the first try. Therefore, in executing their durability and water resistance tests, it failed.

Similarly, the second attempt failed, however attained moderate improvements, it lasted more and was resistant to much more water. Nevertheless, unwilling to stop they ran their third trial with renewed vigor. With much of their dedication, they achieved their goal; the third trial yielded successful results.

Successful in their third try, they finally made the FCB with plastic materials. Each trial roughly took 6 days of work, and many more nights creating their work, additionally, some of which are sleepless. They persevered and overcame the challenges in order to help their community.

The development and cultivating of these kinds of ideas extremely helps their community. This fosters creativity, and compassion for the community. Enhancing the innovative minds, research and critical thinking skills of our future leaders.

With so much research, days of conducting experiments, and teamwork, they finally, and successfully completed their research. With their research and many more alike, we are closer to an eco-friendly system. Many small steps amount to a big journey.

Redefining Cement and Sand Sourcing John Bryll V. Lumpay 9 - Gold

The construction industry relies heavily on cement and sand as foundational materials for infrastructure projects. These raw materials are crucial for creating concrete, mortar, and other construction essentials. However, the gathering and processing of cement and sand can have significant environmental and social implications. This challenge has drawn the attention of innovative minds, including young researchers from Pres Corazon C. Aquino High School, who are exploring sustainable alternatives in construction.

Cement is primarily produced by extracting limestone, clay, and from quarries. Limestone, the key ingredient, is mined using heavy machinery and explosives to break it into manageable sizes. These raw materials are transported to factories, where they are crushed and heated in kilns to form clinker, which is then ground into cement. At the BASECO Community, people have been investigating ways to make cement production more sustainable, reducing the environmental impact of quarrying and processing.

Sand, another essential construction material, is sourced from riverbeds, pits, and beaches. River sand is widely used due to its fine texture, but overextraction has led to ecological damage, including habitat destruction and riverbank erosion. Inspired by these challenges, students at the high school have developed innovative solutions, such as using waste materials like seashells and Styrofoam, to reduce dependence on natural sand resources.

The high school researchers focus on addressing these environmental challenges by reimagining how raw materials are gathered. Their project involves creating hollow blocks using recycled waste materials, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional methods. By crushing seashells and mixing them with Styrofoam dissolved in a solvent, they produce a lightweight, durable material that reduces the need for natural sand and limestone.

The extraction of sand and limestone is not without controversy. Overextraction often leads to resource depletion and severe environmental consequences. Recognizing these issues, researchers aim to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable sourcing. Their work serves as an example of how young minds can contribute to solving global problems at a local level.

The school’s innovative project has also inspired collaboration within the community. Local officials and environmental advocates have taken interest in the students' work, highlighting the potential for grassroots efforts to influence larger industries. Their hollow block project demonstrates that sustainable alternatives can be both cost-effective and practical, providing affordable building materials while addressing environmental concerns.

To promote sustainability further, the students emphasize the importance of recycling and reducing waste in construction. By exploring materials that are often discarded, such as seashells, they hope to inspire others to rethink traditional practices. This approach aligns with global efforts to reduce reliance on natural resources and adopt more eco-friendly building techniques.

The depletion of natural sand and limestone is a growing concern globally, with urbanization increasing demand. The work researchers show how localized initiatives can contribute to addressing this issue. Their project exemplifies the innovative spirit needed to balance construction needs with environmental preservation.

In addition to developing sustainable materials, the students also advocate for education and community engagement. By involving others in their project, they aim to create a ripple effect that encourages more sustainable practices. This includes educating peers and local builders about the benefits of using recycled materials in constructions.

From Fish Waste to Farm Feast Shieka Ibrahim, 9 - Gold

In this country, where agriculture plays a vital role in the economy, the high cost of chemical fertilizers poses significant challenge to farmers. A groundbreaking research project offers a potential solution, transforming discarded bangus (milkfish) scraps into a nutrient-rich, organic liquid fertilizer.

The research meticulously details the process of create this innovative fertilizer. The researchers started with the collection of bangus scraps from local markets. They carefully cleaned the material before mixing it with sugar and water.

A crucial step involved a two-week process, carefully monitored to ensure optimal nutrient conversion. The resulting liquid was then diluted and applied to eggplant plants, alongside control groups treated with tap water and a standard chemical fertilizer.

Transforming Mango Peel to Sustainable Bioplastic

The study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of bangus-amino acid fertilizer in promoting plant growth. While the specific results are not provided, the detailed methodology suggests a rigorous scientific approach, focusing on precise measurements and observations of plant development.

The research clearly identifies plant growth as the dependent variable and the three fertilizer types as the independent variables.

This research holds immense promise for sustainable agriculture in the Philippines. By converting waste into a valuable resource, it offers cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers. The project's success could reduce reliance on expensive imports, empower local farmers, and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural ecosystem.

Beyond the economic advantages, the study highlights the broader implications of utilizing organic fertilizers. The shift towards sustainable agricultural practices is gaining global momentum, and this research contributes valuable insights into this crucial area.

Although further research is needed to optimize the production process and fully assess the long-term effects, the initial findings suggest a significant potential for bangus-amino acid fertilizer to revolutionize Philippine agriculture.

It's a testament to the power of innovation and resourcefulness in addressing critical challenges facing the nation's food security.

Plastics like petroleum-based plastics, contribute significantly to environmental contamination due to their non-biodegradability. As global plastic manufacturing rises, the demand for sustainable alternatives grows increasingly critical. Mango, popular in tropical and subtropical countries, contains a good source of pectin and cellulose that might be of use for bioplastic manufacture, which would benefit the environment.

This project aims to create sustainable bioplastic as an answer to the problem of plastic wastes by accumulating pectin and cellulose from Mango Peels, which is an eminent agricultural waste.

Biodegradable plastic production from such an indigenous waste will destroy the demand of petroleum-based plastic: source of major pollution in the environment.

The findings of this project show that mango-peel derived pectin and cellulose is a sustainable solution for bioplastic manufacturing. By using mango-peel we can effectively reduce mango waste as mango processing

firms generate a huge amount of mango-peel waste. According to the research, the entire project is structured into three different phases- extraction, manufacturing, optimization and evaluation. The extraction process, where the valuable chemical components of Mango peels for bioplastic development are obtained, manufacturing, and optimization are for process refinement and quality improvement in bioplastics. The evaluation phase assesses the bioplastic produced on its efficacy and sustainability, thus making sure that this leaves behind a successful fill-in of the plastic.

The first phase which was to extract pectin and cellulose, they extracted pectin by using an acidic solution (Citric acid) to effectively separate pectin from the solid residue. They extracted cellulose with an alkaline solution, usually sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This removes non-cellulosic components yielding a more concentrated cellulose product. After extracting and purifying pectin and cellulose, the manufacturing

involves three essential components, blending, casting and molding, and characterization. Blending pectin and cellulose mixed with plasticizers like glycerol to enhance flexibility and reduce brittleness, casting and molding the mixture is cast and cured under regulated temperatures to create a slender bioplastic film.

The final phase involves optimizing and evaluating the bioplastic by adjusting proportions of pectin, cellulose, and plasticizers to enhance strength, flexibility, and biodegradability. Biodegradability tests will be conducted in soil to ensure efficient breakdown without leaving harmful residues and optimized formulations will be scaled up to pilot production, transitioning from lab-scale to commercial manufacturing.

Getting good insights on how food waste can be utilized in the production of bioplastics is an innovative solution to the emerging problem of plastic waste. It further tries to explore whether food waste can be used as an alternative for producing sustainable materials to petroleum-based plastics translating to minimized environmental pollution of non-biodegradable plastics.

Breast cancer, the most common cancer in women but is also affecting men. This may be indicated by symptoms like breast lumps, shape changes or nipple discharge, particularly in individuals with risk factors such as age, family history and genetic mutations.

Medical decisions for breast cancer treatment may vary and include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal therapy, but early detection through regular screenings significantly improves treatment outcomes.

Last 2024, the Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines, together with other Non-government organizations (NGOs) and hospitals, launched a massive campaign against breast cancer to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month in different areas of the Philippines, which will continue until the end of the said year.

By way of educating the public; supporting the affected and advocating for better healthcare policies, the number of breast cancer cases had decreased. Some of the platforms where healthcare workers used to educate the public are seminars and workshops for women.

DOH led a nationwide campaign to highlight the importance of early detection and treatment. The campaign included the lighting of 137 iconic landmarks in pink symbolizing unity in the fight against breast cancer.

Based on the information from the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology, the five-year relative rate of breast cancer in the Philippines is only 44.4%. Unfortunately, only half of patients with this disease survived five years after diagnosis.

According to Jose De Leon of the Philippine College of Surgeons Cancer Commission Foundation, the provision of free mammography is a major contribution to the early awareness of breast cancer and can result in a 90% survival rate of this disease.

The latest date reveals by the World Health Organization (WHO), reported that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Filipinos with an incidence rate of 33,079 cases in 2022 which is one of the highest rates in Asia. About 65% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, mainly due to insufficient early detection and treatment facilities.

The hashtag "PinktoberPH" trended throughout this campaign creating a virtual community of support and unity as these personal stories highlighted the resilience and strength of Filipino women in the face of adversity.

Many still combat against this cancer hoping for a better health condition for themselves and for their loved ones. The campaign continues to educate the community and eradicate this cancer and the stigma attached to it.

Because of the damaging impact it can have, particularly on older men, prostate cancer is a concerning condition. Imagine having it: weak urine flow, blood in your urine, painful urination, and mental health problems as a result of having concerns about it.

Prostate cancer starts when cells in the prostate gland grow out of control. It spreads called "metastasis" wherein it can extend and grow to other parts of the body, such as bones and other organs. Cells that build up even in any parts of the body are still called prostate cancer cells.

The specific cause of prostate cancer is unknown. However, it is most likely a complex combination of genetic and environmental factors. Key genetic risk factors include age, family history of the disease, unhealthy way of living, and specific genetic mutations.

For early signs of prostate cancer, you might experience trouble peeing or having blood in your urine. More advanced includes weight loss, feeling tired, hard time getting an erection, pain in the back, ribs, hips, or other bones.

Surgery can be conducted if chosen for early prostate cancer. Removing the prostate is called "radical prostatectomy" which is done in different ways. Consulting with your doctor is a must as this kind of surgery is planned and it carries side effects. Furthermore, radiation treatment, hormone treatment, ablative treatment, chemo, and clinical trials are the other options.

Is mentioning private parts out loud a crime? Well, many may consider penis or vagina a bad word and a sensitive topic that leads to misconception towards the mind of the youth.

Every person goes through a phase called puberty, wherein inevitable and irreversible change happens in our body. While it has always been normal to undergo puberty, it is not easy to talk about the effects of puberty in our body.

When young people experience puberty, they get hesitant to talk about growth of their breast, and other changes in their body because they fear judgement. They fear that other people would view them dirty and pervert.

The fight against prostate cancer creates important problems including the disease's variation, late-stage diagnoses, negative consequences from current treatments, and the spread of cancer. Conflict zones frequently lack the required infrastructure for successful assessment and treatment, and information shortages impede early detection and appropriate action. Obstacles in access to healthcare and information further limit efforts to improve outcomes especially in disadvantaged communities and conflict zones. These issues become worse by restrictions such as a lack of a prevention vaccine and insufficient awareness of risk factors and treatment choices.

Despite these challenges, there is a promise for notably lowering the burden of prostate cancer through worldwide collaboration, creative research and increased access to treatment. Continued investment in medicines, public health efforts, and the sharing of resources and expertise are essential in moving toward a future where prostate cancer is no longer a serious health concern.

While experiencing changes, there enters their curiosity that will not receive an answer because the topic may not be appropriate for teenagers. To avoid teens from experiencing the questions in their minds as a wiser person one should give guidance, provide sexual education, and spread awareness.

However, along the passing years the minds of Filipinos have changed. Filipinos, especially the youth, is slowly opening their minds free from judgement and hesitation.

In a world full of close-minded people, be the beginning of change. People should learn to embrace different parts of our body without feeling embarrassed. Keep in mind that God made us with a purpose: to learn, and to educate. Those purposes should not be set aside and forgotten. Instead we should create a world wherein our private part does not create malicious thoughts and embarrassment. “Echoing

Is masturbating really an act of committing a sin? Some people fail to disagree as stated in the Bible that sexual immorality is considered to be an unforgivable deed, and it is immodest. Masturbation is an act wherein a person sexually stimulates their own genitals for sexual pleasure. It can help in sexual development and can also have many benefits for person's body as well as their mind. However, why do others view this as a vulgar activity? Is touching your private part a crime? While experiencing changes, curiosity enters. However, it may not be immediately answered for some thought this topic inappropriate to teenagers. Misinterpretation, the main reason and answer of the people.

The Internet is one of the causes of misinterpretation. People tend to be influenced to do things with harmful purpose and that includes indecency. It is not a crime of self-pleasure, but it should be done in private. It is not immoral if a person is not intending impropriety. Everyone should also open their minds and free the world from judgements. When everyone else deeply understand that it is normal and biologically, a healthy activity to exercise the private part of their maturing bodies, all will recognize that it is actually normal for a person's growth. It can give relaxation to their body and mind; it reduces stress, boost good moods, relieves pain, and releases tension.

The risk of getting prostate cancer being reduced is also included on the list of its good effects, making ejaculation a good exercise. Touching your genitals does not mean you are breaking a commandment, wrongdoings are. Being aware and having enough knowledge prevents the spread of indecent things that will help each one acknowledge that masturbation is not a crime.

There is no assurance of preventing prostate cancer, but you can minimize your risk by living a healthy lifestyle; keeping a healthy weight, avoiding gateway drugs, exercising regularly, and quit smoking. Several studies have found that men who maintain a healthy weight, engage in regular physical activity, consume a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and avoid smoking are less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer can be life-threatening and in some cases it can lead to death. Before the symptoms of prostate cancer worsen, one should be cautious and look out for their health. It is better to treat it before it spreads to your body and affect your other organs. Better start before it is too late to even try, it is life and death that you are dealing with. Like the famous quote says "Take the risk or lose the chance."

Have you ever had warts? A small bump on your skin that has a rough feeling and causes irritation to your skin. Well, those itchy bumps could be a sign that you have HPV or also known as Human Papilloma Virus.

HPV is a virus that can be transmitted through sex. This virus starts with the spread of warts in different parts of your body and if it is not treated it could lead to cervical cancer. Even before a person becomes sexually active. They are given a vaccine to prevent HPV. The vaccine strengthens your immune system to fight the virus that is attacking your body.

According to studies, taking the HPV vaccine earlier is more effective because once you are infected, the vaccine is no longer helpful for your body. The vaccine cannot help you fight the virus because it is already scattered in your body.

In order to get vaccinated, you can come to health centers for a free vaccine. The HPV vaccine is efficient for lifetime if taken properly.

Along with the continuously progressing prevention and cure, people should slowly accept and embrace the progress. Although different perspective and belief are respected, one should look out for their own health.

Even with just a small bump, an infected person cannot just stay still because without treatment it could lead to serious problem such as cancer. According to studies, cancer on anus, vagina, vulva, and throat could be related to HPV.

In preventing HPV, a person has assurance because the vaccine helps fight the virus. Once a person is infected, the vaccine can no longer help and becomes useless. Always remember that “Prevention is better that cure.”

Schistosomiasis: FightAgainst Parasite

Kate Anzel H. Estropia, 10 - Excellence

Better avoid making contact with contaminated water now, if you do not want to have Schistosomiasis. A parasitic disease that comes from schistosome worms which are found in freshwater such as rivers and lakes.

Schistosomiasis is a disease wherein parasites or worms enter the body through skin when a person make contact with contaminated water. Once worms enter the body, they will release eggs inside.

Some eggs are passed in urine and released outside the body. On the other hand, other eggs become trapped in body tissues which can damage organs and affect tissues.

At first, you will only experience itchy rash, fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. However, over the years, the pain will increase and cause abdominal pain, enlarged liver and blood in urine.

Once the worms spread in one body, it will cause a huge hindrance in one’s health. It causes problems in a persons body resulting in damaged organ such as blood in urine and enlarged liver.

In severe cases, it can result to damaged organ, malnutrition, and impaired growth in children. Which is why it is better to be cautious when you see the early symptoms of schistosomiasis. In order to treat schistosomiasis, people can approach the nearest health center for assistance. The recommended treatment for schistosomiasis is praziquantel, a medicine used to paralyze worms’ muscles.

To prevent Schistosomiasis, experts advise people to practice proper hygiene, wear protective gear, learn about local risks, and more importantly avoid contact with contaminated water. Experts also recommend to educate others to reduce exposure.

In preventing this disease, an individual can lessen the probability of its effects towards overall health. It also increases the chance of curing this disease.

Being cautious with your own health is not dramatic. It is acceptable since it prevents risk and avoid disease. In any place, people can get disease, so its better to be cautious than be sorry to yourself.

Lifetime Cells: Humanity into Immortality

Life has always been temporary, but what if a world wherein no one can die exists? Well, a discovery out of a fiction story has appeared, a new mathematical approach which shows how humanity can survive longer or even forever.

Cellular death lacks a universally accepted mathematical definition, it is known as the key concept in biology because of its significance in various health related studies. It is a critical process in biological systems, and plays a crucial role with major health applications, making it essential for medical science and biological research become advanced.

Recently, researches from the University of Tokyo has produced a new mathematical definition of cell death, where they turned a dead cell into a “representative state of living.” Researchers believed that death is irreversible and it does not always have to be the case.

The researchers perceive cell death based on the idea that dead states are those

which cannot return to a living state, no matter how advanced medical science is. That is why they developed a method called stoichiometric rays” to measure the boundary between life and death.

Stoichiometric rays help the researchers to make a better conceptual understanding about the expiration of life and potentially reverse cellular death. It is a great help to researchers because this method focuses on enzymatic reactions and the second law of thermodynamics.

The new mathematical definition that has been proposed is just a proof that death can no longer be unstoppable.

The understanding of the concept of life and death can completely change the society.

As researchers continue finding the hope of extending life with new innovative methods, this is only the start of a new science revolution. Searching for answers may become harder, but it’s a sign that you are near your definition of hopes.

TheAbsence of Urban Gardening in BaseCommunity

Sangkilan, 10 - Excellence

In the overcrowded BaseCommunity of Manila, where open spaces are scarce, the potential for urban gardening remains undeveloped. In spite of the growing awareness in the food security and of the environmental benefits, urban gardening remains limited in this area. A lack of affordable food source has resulted in a big deprivation among the residents, and it hinders the development of a healthier and greener environment.

The lack of urban gardening in Baseco can also result a negative impact including the insufficient space, limited resources, and not safe environment. Many families live in a squatter area, leaving little to no room for gardens.

Being involved in clean environment is quite helpful in human daily life. What are the benefits of going outdoor in a clean environment? Can we make it a balanced and sustainable environment?

Even though there are many different ways to improve it, even if it involves long-term issue solving, it is still vital for us. For the benefit of nature, we must continue to do it.

People in the Philippines are known for living in impoverished areas, especially those communities that live in unfriendly nature environments, mostly those who live in the city that lacks trees and the negative impact of unhealthy environmental.

many families in Baseco struggle to afford fresh vegetables and rely heavily on processed or instant foods. But urban gardening can help those families to provide a sustainable and affordable way to access nutritious foods.

Beyond food nutrition, urban gardening could bring environmental and social benefits to Baseco. Green spaces would reduce pollution, improve air quality, and healthy lifestyle.

By transforming unused spaces into productive green areas, BaseCommunity could take a significant step toward improving its quality of life and creating a more sustainable urban environment. Change is in our hands; all that is needed is a collective effort.

Choosing the right places for you to live can be helpful to people physically and mentally.

To make this world a better place and to enhance our quality of life, we must help the environment.

Helping communities and areas, even in a little way, can have an impact on how our nature changes. By maintaining our ecosystem this way, we can increase the beauty of our nature.

We always find peaceful living in a beautiful nature.

The community needs to heal and fix the damaged nature; we need to take actions for the sake of our environment.

Small action can have an impact on changes in the global environment.

Let's all be aware of the condition of nature.

against the tide of life

Future Worth Paddling For

Sports activity turns a living for BaseCommunity. Baseco is still standing as one community in the city of Manila, where streets end and the sea begins, where the word "resilience" is defined in living terms. As already stated, life in these places is hard, but people work harder overcoming limitless struggles caused by poverty. Among these are the paddlers: steely men and women who also know to navigate through the waters that surround their homes in their skillfully built boats. Not just as boatmen, they are also fishers and everyday heroes, fighting the battle to keep their community alive to some extent-literally.

It's a mixed blessing for the Baseco paddlers. While most would curse the floods, they welcome the floods with the rising waters as a floating marketplace, as a fishing ground, as a means of existence. They build their boats with wood and plastic barrels, and with nothing but their faith. It is a testimony that with ingenuity and sheer labor, every storm can just be opened as a path ahead.

Every day, with the sun near to setting, the paddlers would be out in the dark-awful waters, fishing to carry guilt inside, to deliver some goods, or to hang on to some living souls on their almost -barely-float ferry boats. Small boats, big survival weight, these paddles are the last hope for tomorrow. The waters are extremely unpredictable; sharp debris and toxic waste cover its surface. They paddle, hoping each

day to bring bread on the table and sustain another day of hope. Every peso counts in Baseco; every thrust in the water by a paddle is a thrust towards a better tomorrow.

But water can be a heartless master. Paddlers risk open-source chemical metal infections, diseases from polluted waters, and floods that threaten to carry them all away. With limited clean water and health facilities, any scratch could become a nightmare for these people. But, against all odds, they work hard tirelessly. Stopping? No way.

To the larger communities, these paddlers receive no honorifics. These paddlers appear strange to anyone walking along with them. Without them, there would be no food delivery, no human

OPINIONS

Excelling in Sports, Failing without Support

AHasnina M. Kabasalan, 10 - Agility thletes train hard, sacrifice time, and push their limits to bring pride to the school. But instead of supporting, some teachers make their journey even harder.

I have seen athletes struggle to balance sports and academics. After attending classes, they then train for several hours and still find time to do schoolwork. Yet, when they miss a lesson due to competitions, some teachers refuse to understand.

Support from teachers is crucial, as even simple "good luck" before a game or extra help with missed lessons can mean a lot. But too often, athletes feel like they are on their own, juggling responsibilities without any guidance.

Some teachers treat absences as if they are a sign of irresponsibility. But these students are not skipping school for fun, they are representing the institution. They carry the school’s name, its pride, and its reputation. Shouldn’t they deserve some understanding?

An excuse letter should be enough, as athletes already prove themselves in competitions and shouldn't have to fight for their teachers' approval. Allowing more extra time with deadlines and assignments would help them succeed in both sports and academics.

STUDY OR PLAY? THERE'SA PRICE TO PAY

Not all teachers ignore athletes, some of them really have genuine care for the athletes. These are the teachers who understand that being an athlete is not just about playing, it’s about hard work, teamwork, and resilience.

A school should stand by its athletes, not just when they win, but throughout their journey. Teachers play a huge role in this. Their support, or lack of it, can make or break an athlete's confidence.

Athletes fight hard for school, but who fights for them? If teachers truly want their students to succeed, they must start showing support where it matters most.

But in the end, no school achieves greatness by ignoring those who bring honor to its name. If teachers truly care about their students' growth, they must support them not just in the classroom but also in every field where they strive for excellence.

TESTIMONIAL

Page 20

- Gold

In today's academic environment, student athletes often encountered this struggle: whether they will prioritize their academics or they will pursue their passion for sports. This puts too much pressure on student athletes to excel in both areas, but it can result in the opposite way making them feel trapped on an obligation they are not aware of. Then do you expect these students to appear all fine?

Sports usually take a backseat since student athletes are often expected to prioritize their education, leaving them to face the cruel reality of their dreams being overshadowed by academic expectations. Education symbolized the right pathway for their future, but they struggle to keep up. Many teachers, instead of giving support, hinder these student athletes from participating in their sports by giving more activities, stressing them with negative feedback, and antagonizing them in class. Student athletes left no choice but to choose not just academic over sports but worse to disregard their interests in sports just to obey the unfair biases and judgement of their teachers.

The inability to play or engage in physical activities might negatively affect not only the students’ mental well-being but also their motivation. It would likely discourage talented student athletes from pursuing their interests. It's overwhelming for those students who dream of excelling in sports, but the pressure to do the same in the academic field is intense.

Yet, the role of education cannot be understated

since it's a foundation that can provide a long-term good image in their future career to succeed. While education is undeniably essential, sports also play a crucial role in personal development. It provides valuable life lessons that go beyond the classroom, such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, and perseverance.

Unfortunately, the infinite demands of academic schoolwork matched with mandatory practices to improve your skill in sports can become suffocating, especially when the student-athlete schedule feels too thin to stretch. To resolve this situation, the parents, teachers, and coaches must solely make a flexible schedule and academic support where a student’s ability isn't based on just one category.

Offering a balanced approach that enables student athletes to succeed academically and pursue their athletic objectives, rather than choosing one over the other is something to be considered in schools. It's time to acknowledge the importance of both education and sports in creating a successful, well-rounded future, and the system must be adjusted to meet these two demands.

Two-time Olympian, Philippines’ EJ Obiena, came in at number four in the Men's Pole Vault World Ranking during the 2024 Paris Olympic and decided to bounce back into the game this year.

He is still hopeful despite spending more than a year as the world's number two; he will still fight to be the number one.

“All I can do is bounce back,” said Obiena, preparing for the indoor season opener in Germany while training in Saudi Arabia with Hussain Al-Hizam under renowned Ukrainian coach Vitaly Petrov.

“That is just life. I missed almost half of the season last year and was almost injured,” he added.

“I’m leaving those memories behind by focusing on getting back and training,” stated Obiena, who suffered a stress fracture in his spine last year.

In 2025, Obiena is committed to many athletics championships across the world.
