Spring 2013 volume 4
Chantel Atkins (CEO/Owner) I started The Rhythmic Lounge in December 2010. At its start, it was a fairly simple website with the purpose of giving people a place to promote their talents and network. I had no idea that less than two years later it would transform into something much bigger. The website then underwent a complete revamp in July 2011, with a brand new look and the addition of many new features, including the creation of The Rhythmic Lounge Radio. Following suit, the radio started out as merely a 24/7 stream of hand-picked music submitted by talented musicians from the website but is now an integral part of the company. Listeners from all over the world tune in regularly to hear the wide variety of music, as well as the educational, musical and talk-radio shows that we now host. The radio’s success has only made me realize The Rhythmic Lounge could take me in new directions everyday rather than the other way around, which is why a digital magazine seemed like the next step. I’m incredibly proud to present to you hardworking artists and entertainers in this magazine and on the site, so enjoy! Be sure to go to www .therhythm iclounge.com to see the profiles for the great talent displayed in this issue and take a look at our new magazine site at http://w w w .trlm agazine.com Thanks for the support, and happy reading!

Qwezt
by Amanda Craig
Johnny (Jay) Sherrod, known as Qwezt, is a hip-hop performer and song writer who calls Douglasville, Georgia, (near Atlanta) home. He was born near Miami and played high school football at Miami Carol City Senior High School with rapper William Roberts, better known as Rick Ross. Qwezt is known for his expansive vocabulary, and has been referred to as a wellseasoned “lyrical powerhouse” for his song lyrics. His inspirations include Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, Nas, Common, and Kanye West. He loosely describes his music as hiphop, but has claimed in interviews he has been unable to identify his perfect niche; he lets the music guide him. His producer, Nelz, refers to their style as “hybrid” music—it’s not commercial or underground, and it’s more than just hip-hop because of his many additional musical influences. Qwezt created Mind Qwezt Music because he wanted to “take people on a quest.” He puts inspirational and thought-provoking messages in his lyrics and feels too many singers have gotten away from conveying a message that means something more in their music. Unlike many current artists, Qwezt has expressed a desire that people listen to his music and learn something from it. Popular singles include “Destiny,” “Qweezy Baby,” and his award winning hit “Gone wit Yo Self.” Some of his music is available for listening on SoundCloud at https://soundcloud.com/mind-qwezt. He has his own YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/MINDQWEZT/videos?view=0, and he has plans to expand his availability on iTunes, https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/qwezt/id314944452. Qwezt’s Twitter account is https://twitter.com/mindqwezt. He can also be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mind-QweztMusic/168258226553053. Keep an eye out for Qwezt in 2013! He will be promoted via 3Suns Media: https://twitter.com/3SUNSMEDIA and Don E Productions: http://www.doneproductions.com/.

True to its name, The Controversy is an Indie band that certainly captures the pulse of today’s people. Drawn together from the Los Angeles music scene, this multifaceted group uses its sound to point directly at what personal liberty means to the ordinary listener. Their almost hypnotic rhythms compel the audience into a bird’s‐eye look at everyday fears and circumstances that place freedom at the very center of conflict. The group's sound is technically classified as being a blend of alternative pop and rock music. The band issued a statement about the actual subject matter of their songs, saying “Controversy is a state of passionate debate, usually concerning a matter of conflicting opinion or point of view. We are interested in talking about subjects that people usually don’t like to talk about…” What could very well spark agitation presents itself through their music in a rather delicate and inviting form. Anyone hearing their songs will somehow visit both their conscience and beast within. At the helm of this flicker are Laura Vall and Thomas Hjorth. Laura, the Barcelona‐born and LA‐ bred classical soulstress who overcame a childhood speech impediment to pursue her passion in the music business, credits her sound to the inspiration of artists Fiona Apple, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Zero 7, Sade, and the great Stevie Wonder, whom she actually had the pleasure of performing with. Band‐ mate Thomas Hjorth, who started with the band as a guitarist for recording sessions, but became songwriter and co‐producer, complements Laura’s vocals with his own honest form of serenity. Together, they've vowed to keep their signature sound to the grindstone of freedom. Contributing art enthusiasts who were able to lend their own talents and resources toward the album’s success heavily supported a cinematic video of the song “Real”, which the debut album is also named. Beyond the huge amount of press received, The Controversy has been nominated for and won some distinguished awards, including 2012 Artist of the Year at the Los Angeles based Artist in Music Awards (AIMA). Every year, the AIMA acknowledges and awards arising artists and musicians globally. "Real" was also awarded the 2012 Best Alternative Song at the Hollywood Music In Media Awards. Their music is also nominated already for several 2013 awards. Some other songs of note from the album are Little Star and Sometimes. Moving full steam ahead, The Controversy is branching out from the roots of accomplishment so far to venture into song selections that should shed more light on the sure‐fire element of the music industry they have become. A new untitled album featuring 8 songs is now being pushed for release in October, with songs called Queen of Chinatown and Don’t Count On Me featured. Lots of touring has been lined up, as well as some collaboration for movies and video games. This crew of artists is not hanging their hats on just the hoopla enjoyed so far. As is the nature of the art they represent, making themselves fit for survival should provide them a sure foot forward. Their music can be enjoyed through their web page at www.thecontroversyband.com or by searching the band on other media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Vudoo Soul by Andy Peloquin
"I never imagined a voice like that coming out of a body like yours." These words came from American Idol judge Randy Jackson, and they embody the talent of this young artist. Growing up in California, the young Vudoo Soul exhibited a passion for music from a young age ‐‐ his elementary school book report was all about Stevie Wonder. He began to teach himself the piano, though his studies trended more towards the technical at MIT. During his time at MIT, he joined A cappella group MIT Logarhythms, and he soon found his passion for creativity and music as he toured the country with the ensemble. His first keyboard was purchased shortly afterwards, and his career as a singer/songwriter began. He graduated as an electrical engineer, but music had ahold of his soul. Within just over a year of graduating, he had toured the country, sung for thousands, performed at the Hurricane Katrina Relief Concert in NYC's Knitting Factory, won the "Apollo Night" event at Harvard, and stole the hearts of America. His soft voice brings back memories of Michael Jackson's early days, with a vocal range to match. He has amazed crowds with the power of the voice coming from his diminutive frame, and his passion for his art shines through with each song. The songs he sings show a youthful passion for life, with an honesty of expression that is hard to find in this day and age. The young artist declares his love for music loudly, saying, “I want to help people connect with each other and understand themselves through my music, to make ’em feel, inspire questions… to make some serious noise.” With his music having roots in rhythm and blues, an intense voice, blazing eyes, and a tenderness in each note, Vudoo Soul is holding audiences spellbound around the country. Whether he's learning Chinese, taking piano and vocal lessons, traveling the country, or writing new music, Vudoo Soul invests his heart and soul in every second of his music.

Young Mexico David Hall aka Young Mexico was born on January 31, 1985 in Nashville, Tennessee. Young Mexico lived with his mother, brother, sister and stepfather, whom he loves like a father. He was a typical teenager but there was always a different glow about him. By age 9 music had already taken a toll in Young Mexico's life. In school, around the block and everywhere he went, he showcased his skills winning talent shows, free styling and rap battles against opponents twice his age. At age 14 his parents were struggling in Nashville with Young Mexico getting into too much trouble. They decided to pack up and move to west Tennessee in 1999. Young Mexico had never been in a real studio until he moved. Being in the studio only made his passion for rap stronger. He then decided to take it much further. Young Mexico collaborated with his brother forming the group “Vicious Youngsters”. They soon dropped their first album called “Murda Monster”. In the streets their first project was a huge success and they quickly made a name for themselves. Young Mexico went on to drop his first solo project called “Respect My Come Up”. This project was followed by 8 more albums full of underground hits, imposing himself as one of the best rappers in West Tennessee. Though with success comes tragedy. In 2004 Young Mexico lost his father and his aunt in the same year. He was devastated. He took a small break from the music business in order to find himself, changing his name several times from Dro to Rossverrelli then to Young Tennakey. It was in 2006 when his life took a turning for the worst with him losing his best friend. He overcame and came back in the studio harder than ever! It wasn't until he linked up with a guy from Mexico where he started traveling back and forth bringing stuff across the border, that the name Young Mexico came about. The name Young Mexico helped and inspired him to come up with his most successful album up to that point “1008 Gramms”, produced by DrummSquad. Three videos were shot off the album and spread throughout the nation through YouTube and other social networking sites. Young Mexico was soon rocking shows, selling out local venues and establishing himself as a young phenomenon in his home state. In 2010 Young Mexico had matured from having gone through some of life's trial thrown at him. As a result he came up with a new album called “Grown Man Shit” to be released in the second quarter of 2011. He went on to work with artists like Kia Shine and Waka Flocka. While recording his album he went to compete in BET's blaze the stage contest, being the only one in his town to make it. He made it all the way to the Wild Out Wednesday all-star rounds. As he was going on stage to perform Young Mexico met one of the judges Mr. James "JB" Brown. He asked, “What could I do to make my performance better?” Mr. Jb Brown gave him a couple of tips and Young Mexico did exactly what was told to him, which resulted in his winning of the showcase. As Mr. Jb Brown was walking back to his vehicle Young Mexico approached him once again thanking his for the tips. Mr. Jb Brown said, “I can make you famous, trust in me and I will trust in you." The skies were the limit from here. As Young Mexico and Mr. Jb worked more together their business relationship started to grow. Soon developing into a nephew and uncle relationship built on trust. With that Mr. Jb made a call to one of Atlanta's great producers better know as Jazze Pha. Jazze Pha was impressed by the young man and decided to make an appearance in Young Mexico's first BET video and new hot single “Back to doing Me”. When Jazze Pha and Young Mexico met the chemistry went through the roof. Success was well on it was, then tragedy happened. One night after an performance Young Mexico got into an altercation thus landing him in the penitentiary. Mexico was sentence for 8 months. During his absence Mr. Jb and Jazze Pha kept in touch with Mexico to lift his spirits, letting him know everything would still be released once he got out. The gates were let open and Young Mexico was released January 25, 2013. The plans that Mr. Jb and Jazze Pha had grew into something bigger for Young Mexico. He was to be signed to Jazze Pha's record label, “ShoNuff Records”. John Mullane by William Kryjak
Songwriting is something that often gets overlooked these days. In an age where people have information at their fingertips, patience and attention spans are constantly getting shorter, and record companies are focused on mass-producing hit singles. Jon Mullane not only proves that good songwriting can still exist; he shoves it in your face. His latest album “Shine” is packed with a variety of musical ingenuity, as is especially apparent in the single “My New American Girl”, a song that I dare you not to get stuck in your head. His previous efforts garnered him modest success when the 2008 Olympics chose his song “Make You Move” for television commercials. While he has achieved a lot, he shows no signs of slowing down. He just wrapped up “My New American Tour” and there are future dates scheduled. Mullane's real success however, lies in the fact that he is able to perfectly combine the familiar pop sound that keeps your head nodding, with an edge that pushes him beyond being just another face in the crowd.

Latasha Lee
by Wlliam Kryjak
Adele, Amy Winehouse, Duffy – it seems these days as though all of the great, female soul singers are coming from across the pond. But you don't have to journey too far for great music. It seems in fact that we have some serious homegrown talent right here in Corpus Christi, Texas, and she goes by the name of Latasha Lee. Lee's brand of soul definitely channels the late Amy Winehouse, which is high praise in itself, but there is a sort of unique RnB finish in her phrasing that differentiates her personal style. Passion and energy come with the territory when making music, but it takes real desire to make beautiful soul songs, because with soul it is on display for all to see, no holds barred. Powered by a stand up band The Black Ties, Lee puts this emotion on display in every performance. Check out her cover of Tammy Wynette's “Stand By Your Man” or her rendition of blues standard “Pledging My Love”. Corpus Christi isn't exactly Motown, but Latasha Lee shows us that soul is still alive and well in America.

HamTrackz Productions A lot of today's hip-hop is a pool of stripper anthems, blood, guts and gore. So when you're of age like me, it's hard to find GOOD music that's the hip-hop of the late greats, but still have a modern twist. After a while you only sit back in hopes that its going to go back to the COMMON, the ROOTS, and GOODIE MOB, where music was about story telling, beat battling, and fun. JaLon Blac's approach to music in an eclectic and rhythmic with a splash of Southern suave. I found it very soothing and reminiscent of the days where music was about story telling and the essence of Hip Hop. From "P.S.A" 's detailed description of "no strings attached" relationships to "Keep it Going", a rendition of staying positive through tough discretion, "Johnny Bootlegger: Maconga, School of the Gifted Presents...." is a musical lesson of life. I enjoyed the electronic throbbing of "That Sho'Nuff" so much I went out and bought strobe lights in my living room. The music is a mixture of jazz, church claps, and soul...very different than most of the sounds that are out now. "Everything is just moving so fast. I remember selling Cd's in front of the stores in Macon, and this guy drove back and asked if I could sign the CD because it's going to be worth something one day." He got into music through B.B.E (Macon, GA), and then came over to HamTrackz Productions, where he met up with Chazaray "Chazzam" Tolbert and Michelle Latimer. "It felt good to meet a person with
a different outlook to music, and really bring it out of me. They really taught me that at the end of the day, it's one thing to say that you want to be an artist, but you have to look at the business behind the scenes, and that's intense" "When I met JaLon, I was like ok, lets see what we can do, and the creativity that he has is amazing," rein-acts Chazaray "Chazzam" Tolbert (CEO HamTrackz Productions / producer). "We just got to vibe’n, man, and the rest was history. We just start having a conversation about life in general. Women, relationships and so forth. Then came 'PSA'. He definitely makes me want to be more creative and gain inspiration for creating new sounds, beats and things like that." Chazaray is also the executive producer of upcoming Neo-Soul Artist Tia Michelle. "HamTrackz Productions came about because I was frustrated about the music that's out. I wanted to bring something new to the atmosphere that's more fun, and reminiscent of the times growing up, admits Chazaray Tolbert. "It started out as just a place for artists to express themselves musically, and turned into a bigger conglomerate. I never expected the response to become as great as it is with everyone’s responses to the music. For idols (Producers) like Mr. ColiPark, Supa Dave and Mikey Jay to say that shit's hot?! It's a blessing." From the beginning to the end of the album, Johnny Bottlegger: Maconga, School of the arts Presents..., you're going to dance, laugh, and cry. JaLon Blac definitely brought hip-hop back to where it belongs. Definitely the type of album that many critics
like myself are going to enjoy...with a sip of lemon tea with a splash of rum of course. www.hamtrackzproductions.net @JaLonBlac YouTube: YouTube.com/HamTrackzProductions Booking : M.Latimer@HamTrackzProductions.net Production: C.Tolbert@HamTrackzProductions.net

DJ Wil by Patrick Ross London based Disc Jockey, DJ Wil AKA “The Master Selector” is the founder and C.E.O. of Smoke Entertainment since March 2007 to the present, also a managing director in charge of one the United Kingdom’s finest urban Internet radio stations Hotbox Radio London since October 2010 to the present. Born April 19, Wilmot Faulkner in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Music has always been a part of his life beginning as a member of one best and most renowned church and school choirs in West Africa for several years. While still in school around the early 1990’s, young Wil discovered a passion for disc jockeying and soon after started on the path to a career in the entertainment industry. Making guest appearances on FM and short wave radios stations, Wil worked nine years as a DJ, announcer, presenter, and production assistant on the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service SLBS FM 99.9 and also on Skyy Radio 106.6 FM in Freetown along with it’s sister station KISS 104 in Bo. A mixture of native and French, British and Kriol influences, Sierra Leone music is represented by Palm wine the drink and is played by an acoustic guitar with percussion in countries through out coastal West Africa. Palm wine is also the source of the name of the music and clubs where it was both drunk and played. Also known as Maringa, it was first popularized by Ebenezer Calendar & his Maringa band, and used styles that came from freed slaves from the Caribbean, especially Trinidadian calypso. Milo-Jazz is a distinctly Sierra Leonean style named for a brand of chocolate powder, empty cans of which were filled with stones to create a core percussion instrument. Beginning in the 1970’s, rumba, Congolese music, funk and soul combined to create a popular kind of Afro pop. Western Rap, Reggae, Dancehall, R&B, and Grime have begun to have an impact on the new music generation, while the internet and spread of western music culture has encouraged the youth like DJ Wil, to express themselves through new styles of music. Consequently, as one of the pioneers in Sierra Leone’s music scene, Wil became a strong influencer helping to promote local music artists in his country, helping many of these artists to gain both national and international recognition in the music industry. DJ Wil made many appearances at events, shows, and parties gigging in and around the townships and districts of Sierra Leone. He now has made his residence in the UK. His most recent gigs as a radio show host have been on “Night Ride” which is on air every Monday night 9pm – 11pm UK time, and “The Weekend Starter” show every Friday night 9pm – Midnight UK Time. The Shakes
by Bronx Bishop
They say that discovery is half the fun of a thing. If this is true, then the rest of my day is going to be spent in bliss as I continue to discover the Rock and Roll band called The Shakes. This up and coming band has already been together now for over six years and it shows in their music. Take the song “For Good” as an example. Within the first 15 seconds, they had me comparing them to classic rock and roll superstars like Kansas and Foreigner. I spent the rest of the song comparing the lead guitarist to Elton John’s Davey Johnston and being amazed at how good the song really is. By the time I heard the song for the third time back to back, (yes, it is that good) it had me thinking that it could be a cross between Rocket Man… and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. You can feel the music that they play, which is a phenomenon that is more often reserved for the classic rock songs turned out at the end of the 8‐track era. You know the songs… Time in a Bottle, Dust in the wind, and Bridge Over Troubled Waters were all three examples of what it means to feel a song and yet here am at nearly the midway point of 2013 listening to a song produced in 2011 and feeling it. I was not just feeling parts of it, which is not uncommon. It is extremely rare to feel a new song all the way through from end to end. It has me wondering if I have really just discovered my next favorite band or perhaps, I had dozed off and having the best dream of this decade. Alas, I open my eyes to a song still playing that has soulful, wide reaching appeal and I am wondering just how much of The Shakes’ music sounds like this? As I move on to Peace of Ground, I realize that the Shakes are for real. If you love original music born of years spent listening to the finest makers of Rock Operas, you are going to love The Shakes. Do not just take my word for it. Listen for yourself and experience what is going to soon be a modern version of the next fresh thing. I hope you love the Shakes as much as I do. I would really hate knowing that I am the only one listening to music that is this good. Songwriting 101: Part 2 By: Monet
In my previous article, I spoke about the core factors that make
catchy choruses with the title of the song typically found in the

melody, rhythm and harmony. One of the great things about songwriting is honing your creativity and being able to experiment with different sounds, melodies, structures etc until you find what works for you. When the average person hears a song that they just absolutely love and connect to, it’s the melody and maybe the lyrics that they are attracted to. With genres of hip hop, pop, rock songs, it’s the melody that captures the listeners – even if they have no idea what the song says (as it relates to lyrics) they love the song and will hum it all day long. When it comes to genres like R&B ballads and country, the lyrics usually stand out. The writer captures your attention with melody yes, but they
Verse/Chorus/Bridge (ABC) Simply an extension of the verse/chorus format, this is another fairly common format in today’s music. It consists of versechorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus arrangement. The chorus contains the main idea of the song, and verses are stories that lead up to the chorus. The bridge however, is what I call the highlight of the song. It is sometimes completely different from any other part of the song; at the least, it has different rhythm, melody (maybe key change) and lyrics. It too is usually shorter than the verses and chorus. With the bridge, one can be as creative as they choose to be.
draw you in and tap into your emotional core by use of indepth lyrics. There are various types of song structures utilized by the top songs on all of the individual music charts. Some of the more popular ones that are typically found in songs played on today’s radio are of course the verse/chorus arrangement and the verse/chorus/bridge arrangement. However there are other structural forms that even though not as popular in current music, have had great success over the years. Just as fashion is

No matter what era one may decide to sample, or what genre is preferred, there will be one of several song formats implemented. Songwriting is a craft – an art form. Just as a painter can use 3 simple colors and make many varying masterpieces, a songwriter can also mix and mingle song forms and melodies. Step outside of the box sometimes, and who knows, maybe you can come up with a new song pattern that will one day be utilized by songwriters everywhere. Happy writing!
When SynchDub’s latest CD, Twilight Last Glance, was released, it captured critics and the public alike with its unique mix of experimental, minimalist and ambient sound. With electronica becoming a more dominant force outside of the clubs and underground hip circles, the SynchDub is building a sub genre that’s been called rhythmic ambientalism, conjuring up transcendental sounds that make the body and spirit move. That innovation has earned SynchDub the envious distinction of the “Heart and Soul of Electro.” For years, she was a percussionist with a variety of artists in her native Belgium. In late 2006, SynchDub released its first CD, the playfully titled Drone, which caught the progressive ears of DJs and Internet radio with its signature sound-style. Utilizing varied and rich electronic methods such as Leftfield, BreakBeats, and Computer Beeps, SynchDub’s sound runs the gamut from exuberantly bright to emotionally deep and dark.
While aimed more towards the dance floor, the record was what SynchDub calls “an introverted affair,” allowing the external sound to immerse the inner emotions. Noted for putting a human face on electro, SynchDub is also influenced by the Eastern culture of modern Japan, where electronic music is considered an extension of the body. That fusing of mind, soul and body is the hallmark of SynchDub’s musical mission.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE: Cool as Backside reflects a new dimension of SynchDub’s genius Brussel, Belgium- March 2013- Belgian IDM artist SynchDub’s latest offering ‘Cool as Backside’ inspires in ways more than one. It has come as no surprise that the Extended Play has been able to accord itself a place in the heart of anticipating millions. SynchDub, ever since its formation in the year 2006, has been constantly raising the bar in terms of creating a sub genre of music. This music, inclined towards transcending the eternally traditional motifs, has been termed Rhythmic Ambientalism. With almost a consensus, SynchDub has been given the status of ‘Heart and Soul’ of Electro. This panegyric rests very well on its shoulder and is a testimony to the continuously innovative efforts that it has made so far. In times when the experimental music is beginning to gain grounds on dance floors, SynchDub is marginally alienating itself from discs by creating an abstract version which is replete with memories of older arts. Within it you will find BreakBeats- a superb mélange that holds a 4/4 drum pattern and deviates ever so smartly into syncopations or off-beat tunes. Sometimes, the conflicting Polyrhythms are esoterically used to camouflage the running motif of the EP; all these turn out to be sweet deviations though. Apart from BreakBeats, SynchDub’s Rhythmic Ambientalism also draws inspiration from LeftField, Dub, Techno and Computer beeps. By using minimalist sound and playing on the ambient aspect of acoustics, Cool as Backside plays on your senses in an ever so gripping way. It clearly draws you out only to absorb you in a transcendental array of tunes and images. It is not an overstatement to suggest that this experimental sub genre is bringing the heart and spirit completely to the table. Cari, the head percussionist in her native Belgium band, has flavored really well with passing seasons, and has adopted a new contrived form which is entirely her own despite taking suggestions from the masters of the yesteryears. Drone, SynchDub’s first EP, had completely caught the Purists off-guard but had still garnered rave reviews from critics, masses and aficionados alike. Much of it could be attributed to the progressive rhythm that jumped, pranced, but scorched the senses nevertheless. The Internet Radio and floor DJ’s were merrily absorbed for months on end with the captivating EP. SynchDub has already suggested unequivocally, how the tunes would change from the effervescent to bright to the dark and dull. In their view, the whole affair is introverted and captures the essence of human spirit, chained and aiming to transcend spaces through music. Cari, more than anything else, can be eulogized for bringing in a completely human element to the Electro; this has lot to do with the Japanese Producing House AmetSub. Yes, the tunes will ask the listeners for rapt attention but if soaked in a disciplined way, the tunes can also raise the listener to a place of great beauty. The EP come out extremely poignant on the senses and is especially a treat in its interregnum, periods where they transit in a smooth non-rehearsed way. A lot of things were expected from SynchDub this time and in their own, ever so startling way, they have managed to come up trumps with this offering. ###

Omar Wilson
by Amanda Criag
Omar Rahsaan Wilson is an award-winning R&B and soul artist from Norwalk, Connecticut. His musical career began early; from six years of age, he was singing lead solos at Norwalk’s Calvary Baptist C hurch, moving the parishioners to tears with his emotional interpretation of the music. He began performing as a rap and hip-hop street artist. At the age of 17, Omar moved to Durham, North Carolina to join three of his cousins in a rap group called Lost Souls. Working with songwriter and producer Mike City, who produced artists Usher, Brandy, and Jay Z, Omar began to truly develop his craft. The group produced two albums: “Soul Talk” and “Life Is Life.” When one of his cousins in Lost Souls suffered a severe neck injury, he formed a new group with the other cousin called The Souls. The experience garnered from his first two bands influenced Omar to use his rhythm skills as a rap artist to expand his vocal capabilities in soul and R&B. In addition, around this stage in his career, he discovered people responded more strongly to his singing than his rapping—a realization that further pushed his focus toward soul and R&B. In 2007, Omar began a stretch as a three-time award winner at Amateur Night at the Apollo. He also won recognition as the Best R&B Male of the Year at the Underground Music Awards (BB Kings NYC) in 2008 and 2009. He lists his primary musical influences as Tupac, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, and David Ruffin, but includes “all soulful singers.” Audrey Bernard of the New York Beacon described Omar’s voice as, “a hybrid of Donny Hathaway, Nate Dogg, and Seal rolled into one” (Bernard, Audrey J. “Newest soul singer on the block – Omar Wilson – gets Stone for his hot new single.” New York Beacon 6 August 2009, Lifestyles/Society sec. Print.). However, Omar’s strength as an artist is also visible as a songwriter. His strongest inspiration for songwriting appears to be life itself. He writes about a wide variety of social issues, such as homelessness and the economy, offering topics people can relate to in his music. And while Omar is an R&B singer, he prefers to describe his style as “B&R”—blues and rhythm—emphasizing the “blues” due to the nature of his grittier song lyrics. In spite of the difficult subjects he writes about, he chooses to emphasize the positive elements of society and avoids glorifying crime, sex, or violence. Unique indeed. Popular singles include the titles “Never Again,” “The Good Life,” and “Get to Know You Better,” a single featuring platinum recording artist Angie Stone. Omar is currently at work on “The Dream Project” in collaboration with Joey Groon and Donnie Osborne. More information about their music is available on the website: http://www.thedreamprojectglobal.com/. Alonzo Reid by Andy Peloquin
Called "Mr. Quietstorm of Southern Soul", Alonzo Reid is a name that will soon become a household name among lovers of that good ol' soul music.
The smooth, dulcet tones of Alonzo Reid's tenor are a pleasure to the ears, and his music is dynamic and up‐tempo. He is considered one of the top sexist soul singers of this day and age, and his songs like "Wanna Make Love 2 U" and "Hooked On Your Love" slide gently into your ears as the soulful singer croons his way into your heart! Born and raised in the Alabama city of Montgomery, he started his musical education on the drums at the age of 6. Inspired to play by his mother, the young Alonzo Reid was taught music by Gospel greats like Pittsburgh's The Swan Silvertones and the Brooklyn All‐Stars. He quickly found his place in the world of music, playing in Montgomery and touring around the country with Chicago's Pilgrim Jubilees. He played with Gospel greats like Dorothy Northwood, Aretha Franklin, and The Soul Stirrers, but rhythm and blues had captured his heart by the end of the 90s. He was soon drumming for Marvin Sease, and has played with Mel Waiters and Bobby Womack for years. Now, Reid is stepping out into his own limelight, launching his first album in 2011 ‐‐ titled "Undercover Freak". Two of his hit singles are circulating around the world, and they are making him a man to listen to! The soulful artist has opened for The Manhattans, Ray Goodman & Brown, Bobby Womack, and Gladys Knight, and his voice has the ladies swooning! Once you've seen the smooth artist crooning his X‐rated songs in his silken voice, you too will be a fan for life! Movie Reviews ‘The Hitcher’ by Wandalyn Thomas
Rating:
★★★★★
‘The Hitcher’ is a 1986 film by Director Robert Harmon and Screenwriter Eric Red. It stars Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The movie opens with a sleep deprived Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) driving in the middle of nowhere. He’s taking a vehicle back to its owner, whom lives in San Diego California. He briefly falls asleep, drifts into the other lane and is nearly hit by a semi. This act prompts him to stop for hitchhiker John Ryder (Rutger Hauer). He threatens Halsey with a switchblade twice. Ryder wants to die and has picked Halsey for the job. Halsey manages to force Ryder out the car. Later a packed station wagon passes Halsey. To his horror, Ryder plays with a kid in the back. Halsey tries to warn the vacationing family. But Ryder kills everyone. Halsey tries to make a call at a gas station. It’s abandoned and worse the phone doesn’t work. Next Halsey sees a pick‐up offering Ryder a lift. Halsey frantically searches the road for them. The next time Halsey sees Ryder he’s driving the pick‐up. The local bus drops Nash (Jennifer Jason Leigh) off for work. She’s a waitress at a roadside diner/gas station. Cute meet with the love interest. Halsey calls the police while there. He tries to explain when they arrive but is promptly arrested. Ryder planted the bloody switchblade. The informal Q & A doesn’t go so well. Halsey awakes up to find the cell door unlocked. Where is everyone? They’re dead. Halsey kidnaps a pair of state troopers. This isn’t the best method to prove your innocence. Ryder takes them out. Halsey is blamed for that also. Now every cop wants to fit him for a toe tag. He runs into Nash again when she decides to leave town. The pair ends up on the run. They hide out a truck stop motel. Ryder kidnaps Nash from their room. He ties her between a trailer and cab. Halsey still won’t pull the trigger. Ryder takes his foot off the clutch. Being in custody doesn’t faze Ryder either. Halsey knows there will be an escape attempt. Cue the final showdown. Ryder dies in epic fashion. Being hit by a SUV doesn’t do it. So Halsey breaks out the rifle. He fires three rounds to his torso.
‘The Killer’ by Wandalyn Thomas
Rating:
★★★★★
The Killer is the 1989 film by Director and Screenwriter John Woo. It stars Chow Yun Fat, Danny Lee and Sally Yeh. Ah Jung (Chow Yun Fat) is a Triad assassin who takes one last job to help the singer Jennie (Sally Yeh) that he accidently blinds. Li Ying (Danny Lee) is a detective determined to avenge his partner’s death. The lines between redemption, honor and revenge blur. Jung’s long buried conscience surfaces. He starts saving victims caught in the crossfire. He becomes Jennie’s shadow and protector. Eventually they fall in love. She stays with Jung even after learning he’s a hit man. Alarmed by Jung’s behavior, the Triad put a hit out on him. This betrayal disillusions Jung. He thought they were all men of honor. Ying has his own set of problems. His longtime partner and friend Tsang dies after being injured on the job. Ying is a rapid dog seeking justice without Tsang to rein him in. He doesn’t play by the rules. His ambitious and ladder climbing boss doesn’t trust him. He’s a regular before Internal Affairs. He won’t drop the Jung investigation. Despite being repeatedly threatened with suspension. Jung and Ying come to an understanding. Jung reveals he’s trying to get Jennie a cornea transplant. Ying agrees to hang back. He even agrees to send her to the U.S. if Jung is killed. Former hunter and prey bond over moral obligations. Loyalty and brotherhood is something both men cherish. Ying puts his badge aside. He helps Jung escape several ambushes. Woo’s artistry is on full display. Parallel editing eerily show Jung and Ying becoming alike before switching roles. The cop is now the bad guy. And the killer is the good guy. They employ gunshots, shot gun blasts and explosions to dispatch their enemies. This guilty pleasure is one gory mess after another. You’re rooting for Jennie, Jung and Ying to escape to America. Where they can start over and live in peace. But a happy ending isn’t in the cards. Jung dies after being shot in both eyes. Ying kills the Triad boss while the man was surrendering to authorities. Ying is arrested and taken into custody. The audience is left to wonder if he used Jung’s finances to send Jennie away for the transplant surgery.

Tess Henley is a breath of fresh air from all corners and a sight to see. With an overall whimsical radiance when performing, she takes the hand of every audience member back to where it all started. She grew up in a Seattle household listening to the likes of James Taylor, Motown music, Stevie Wonder, and iconic bands like the Beatles and Earth, Wind, and Fire. Her parents, who introduced her to these sounds while spurning commercial radio and allowing late night listening sessions, began piano lessons for her at the age of 3, where she was taught a Japanese technique of learning music as a language. Now embarking on her push to make timeless music, Tess taps into the renowned Philly-soul sound by teaming with the production unit of Dice Raw from the highly acclaimed band The Roots in hopes of escalating her career to new heights. Some noteworthy successes so far are her winning the Budweiser Dallas Superfest Contest for a $25,000 grand prize, the 2011 Soul Tracks International Song Competition crown, an Independent Music Award for Best R&B Song, and being among the top three finalists for honors at the highly respected John Lennon 2011 International Songwriting Competition. She has opened shows for Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton also. Tess is most revered for having strong tempo in her music through sincere vocals, fluid harmonies, and compelling songwriting. Horns are also woven into her sound to tighten the texture some. Many of the lyrics chosen for songs are drawn from personal experience. For her song, From The Get Go, she pulls from a past relationship when encouraging fans not to allow impulse to override intuition. A duet with fellow Seattle singer Mycle Wastman for the remake of the 1978 International hit What You Won’t Do For Love, by Bobby Coldwell, solidifies her soul-music aptitude. She also touts some movie scores to her credit. Now promoting a 13 track new album, fans are mounting up fast overseas. A special Japanese edition of the first album is highly publicized there. Some European reviews endorse her ‘fresh and breathy’ range as already being ripe, zealous, and credible. A review out of the UK lauds her focus and astute approach. The ball is definitely rolling for Tess Henley. The only question left to answer is, “Where will it bounce?” Access to her music can be gained through the following links: http://tesshenley.com/ www.youtube.com/user/tesshenley?feature=watch https://twitter.com/TessHenley https://soundcloud.com/tesshenley/tess-henley-boy-in-the-window https://soundcloud.com/tesshenley/tess-henley-daydreaming Email: guy@iconiquemusicgroup.com “Guy Eckstine/Iconique Music Group”

Shakespeare
by Andy Peloquin
While he may not be as widely known as the British author with whom he shares a name, the Brooklyn‐born hip hop singer, song writer, and M.C. is a rising star to keep an eye on. New York is known for producing greats, and The Incomparable Shakespeare is no exception! Born and raised in the Big Apple, this young artist has music in his blood. From a young age, he spent hours listening to music, singing tunes on the street, and creating complicated lyrics in his head. While he penned his first album years later, Shakespeare has been a singer and songwriter in his own right for years now. The young rapper brings a sincere, direct spirit to his music, and his audience loves him for the vulnerability he infuses into his music. His unique fashion sense makes him stand out from the crowd, and he has received high praise for his music and lyrics from journalists and music critiques alike. He has been called "Mozart meets Humphrey Bogart meets Slick Rick", and his smooth rhymes and hit singles have put him on the verge of breaking into the big leagues. He has gained recognition from national and international companies, with greats like Rick Ross, Pill, and Wale applauding his talent. His appearance on RapFix Live showed his mad skills with freestyle rhymes, and the crowd showed him crazy love when his turn in the rap contest ended. He is featured in a National Ecko TV campaign, which can be seen in Macy stores around the world, MTV Sukerfree, Rapsheet, and Complex Magazine. With his mad skills and the increased interest of America in his slick rhymes, this young artist has a bright future ahead of him! Kokoa Leaves grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and always knew rapping would be part of his future. Like most young talent, he started rapping at age 5 and he never stopped. Street kid to rap artist was a natural transition, writing his first rap at 12, had his first live performance at 15 and joining his first group at 16.! Now at 33, “Street Religion” is what he calls his current music style. Life has its lessons it wants to teach and after being locked up for six and a half years on three felony charges, now it’s his time to let it all out. Everything he speaks on from guns, drugs, religion, incarceration, he lived all of it.! After incarceration, rejection from family and friends he almost gave up music. But he recorded a verse with a relative, putting all his pain and rejection behind it and the city called out to him, called him to come back to his passion.! Rakim has always been one of his major influences, because he is a Muslim and a thinker. Islam plays a huge role in Kokoa’s life giving him strength and drive to continue the path he began at a young age.! He has opened up for major performing artist’s all over, including R. Kelly, Salt ‘n Pepa, Twista, Tech-9, SWV, Too Short and Mack 10.

Dawn Richard
Essince: Hey, what’s going on, Dawn? How’re you doing? Dawn Richard: I’m doing great, man. I’m doing great. Essince: I was listening to your single, “86”. Can you talk to me a little about it? Dawn: Yeah, man. The title is basically a play on words. The slang term to “86 something” is to get rid of something and I thought it would be dope to make a record about getting rid of boundaries and really being able to love the right way. In order to do that you gotta do it the right way and get rid of all of the hate and all the bad things surrounding you. I thought it was dope that we would play 80s style production on the record so the name of the record “86” has a double meaning. So, kind of a classic, timeless kinda R&B record that takes it to the next level with having that 80s style production inside of it.
Essince: I loved “Armor On” and so did the critics, but what can we expect from “Golden Heart”? I understand it’s a 3 part series? Dawn: Yeah, it’s a trilogy and what you can expect is really…the strongest music I’ve ever put out. And I mean that because it’s really a mix of me throughout the years. It’s all the influences I’ve ever had, all the writing I ever came up with and all the things I really wanted to say were on this album. It’s my strongest album. Essince: What is the transition like from a member of a group into a solo artist; especially with different types of groups, like you’ve done? Dawn: There’ve been a lot of them, honestly. From being with 4 girls to having my boss being one of our group members and then being in a 2‐female 1‐guy dynamic is very different from being in a group with 4 girls. I feel like very transition I’ve made has been a drastic one. And then doing solo, I’m not only doing it as a solo artist but I’m going without a label or a machine. But each transition has been an interesting….I don’t even know how to say it…journey, really. But it’s been worth it and a challenge. I’ve always welcomed a challenge and thus far it’s been really rewarding for us. Essince: So how do you capitalize on the success of being in a group? Because there are so many people who’ve transitioned to solo careers and couldn’t use their success as a marketable advantage. How were you able to do that? Dawn: Honestly, I can’t even tell you how we did it; by the graces of God. Like you said it’s very difficult to come from one group let alone two Very different groups from Very different genres and still be relevant after that. I don’t have the answer for that I just know that I’m being me and I’m doing me and I really don’t have a care in the world if people get it or not. I’m rockin’ with people who rockin’ with me and we’re going full throttle, full speed ahead. I guess my thing is, for me, if when you are doing you and you really love what you do and put a whole bunch of heart into it and you really don’t accept “no” as the answer it’s just ours. Essince: In today’s music culture, especially in hip‐hop, people promote themselves with mixtapes but it’s not really as common in the pop or R&B world. If you’re a new singer what do you need to do to promote yourself and is touring/live shows important?
Dawn: All of it’s important. Social media is important. Touring is important. Everything is important and I think that when you notice that you can capitalize on that the best way you can, as an independent artist. Essince: What about videos? Especially with you and videos like “Wild in Faith” and “Automatic” which are so beautifully artistic, do you think it’s important to stand out visually, too instead of the traditional video? Dawn: Yeah, man. Those are extremely important. And for me the visual is more important than anything else. That’s why I’ve chosen to take so much time IN my videos to make sure that they have a quality in them because the visual is just as important as the sound. They have to make sense. And especially because I’m doing a trilogy it’s extremely important that people understand what I’m trying to relate to them and I try to do that as best as I can by giving them quality work every time. Essince: Are you still a comic book geek? Dawn: oh, totally. That’s never gonna change. Essince: What are some of your favorites? Dawn: I’m an old school DC Comics kinda chick but I also like manga like Full Metal... Essince: Full Metal Alchemist? Dawn: Yep, that’s kinda what I grew up on and Bleach so I’m old school with manga. Those are my fav’s. Essince: Are you still drawing or have plans on illustrating anything new? Dawn: I haven’t drawn in a minute and it’s because clearly doing all of this on my own has taken up so much of my time but there is a dream to get back to it because I want to do some great things with it. So I have a couple of plans about opening up a store, a comic book store. A lot of things I really want to do but those will come in the future.
Essince: I definitely understand where you’re coming from. When I was younger I wanted to be a hand animator for Disney before they closed that department down but it’s really difficult balancing that and music and trying to run a business. Dawn: It is difficult. Animation itself is hard because it’s a dying breed, people aren’t reading anymore and only the cult following are part of the movement. So it takes a little bit more time to get people to come into a store and buy an issue of a comic book especially with the Internet and social media is such a big thing you can just get it online. So it’s a lot of commitment to put into it to make it great, you know? Essince: Right. So do you have any ambitions to do any voice acting for anime or anything? Dawn: Oh! I would love to! I’m a geek till the cows come home. I’m a super geek so I would definitely love to do that. Essince: Any final shout outs? Where can we find you online and when can we expect new material from you? Dawn: The album is out now online and in stores worldwide. I’m on www.twitter.com/DawnRichard. My information is there. You can get all the dates and everything. Essince: Well congratulations on everything. I’m excited, as an art geek, for everything you’re planning to do with the store and everything and definitely appreciate your time. Dawn: Thank you So much!
Intertwined by Amanda Craig
Intertwined is a hard rock/metal band that formed in 2004 out of Grand Junction, Colorado. Original founding members were Blane Robinson (drums) and Colin Cummings (guitar); Jeremiah Campbell (vocals) and Barak Erwin (bass) joined later to complete the original fourperson band. In 2006, the band released their self-titled album “Intertwined,” and soon after, Jesse Ortiz signed on as a second guitarist. With the addition of a second guitar player, the band began work on new songs for a second album, while they continued to develop their own style. Intertwined released their second album “Shameless” in 2009; it revealed a more fiery, fast-paced sound consistent with the character of their live shows. Loyal followers have been supporting the long journey of her self-written hits and diverse performances filled with chic surprises. They've helped to spread the word about one of her current singles "Loss 4 Words" from the "Sho-N-Telle" (pronounced Show & Tell) album. The soulful sound reached nearly 11,000 You Tube views within only three days. With the single's You Tube hits still climbing, it gained recognition from out-of-state DJ's and producers to more of respected mainstream artists. It reached the attention of the president of Headbanger Music Group, Jay Reid. After having a conference call with Manager Anthony “AB Barnes and Mr. Reid, she began collaborating with his team tagged with rappers like Omillio Sparks (also known for his roles with "State Property" and the movie "Streets"), Tommy Brown, and Tiffany Tucker. This new role boosted and broadened her audience giving more of the world a chance to hear the X factor that caught Reid's ear. Now in demand, she has grown beyond her local stardom. Ms. Shontelle has grown comfortable with her "sassy street with a lining of classy" style and leaves room for new ideas to show the world who she is. She is a breath of fresh air in the rhetoric of today's music. A new sound, a new vibe, and a new reason to let all the tracks play without skipping a beat.

Album Reviews Downfall 2012 - EVERYMAN FOR HIMSELF by William Kryjak
Rating:
★★★★
Downfall 2012 is one of those bands you hear on the radio and immediately have to find out who they are. Their style is familiar, and reminds me a lot of the metal I grew up listening to. Bands like Static-X, Slipknot, and Mudvayne have all most certainly had an influence on this band and their style of music. In their latest album Everyman for Himself, they show their true colors with a force. The album kicks off with the song “Face to Face”, a great selection to kick things off. There is a power that sets the tone for the rest of the album, but leaves you wanting more. The next song “Divinity” is a bit catchier but still plays along nicely with a thrash feel. Each song is a little different but still packs their same heavy sound. I really like that this band is only a three-piece outfit – it makes their huge sound that much more impressive (and makes me think off Slayer which is a huge thumbs up). Personally I would be interested to hear what they would sound like with a synth, but on the other hand it might be too much of a deviation from their style. Another personal suggestion is more solos. There is no rule that metal has to be technical, but I think it would add a little more definition to their sound. One last thing to pay attention to is the ending of the album. Usually little skits and transition sections get overlooked when talking about albums, but I think in this case it is the perfect way to wrap things up, painting a bleak picture that leaves a taste in your mouth. This is not easy to do, and only shows how talented these guys really are. Check out their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/DF2012) for updated information on shows, and definitely check out Everyman for Himself. Downfall 2012 makes straight metal with some real promise.
Intertwined - Attest by Amanda Craig
Rating:
★★★★
The first thing that strikes you when listening to Intertwined’s album Attest is the stark contrast between primary vocals—a surreal blend of clean and unclean. While the band classifies itself as a blend of hard rock and heavy metal, a large percentage of the vocals would be categorized as guttural vocals or death grunts. However, while the music is forceful and heavy, the subject matter is not as dark as death metal. The song “War is War,” takes a critical view of war; contrast that with the love song “Kloe Rose,” lamenting “One day you will come back to me.” The driving riffs in “Cliffhanger” propel the song forward with momentum. Other memorable songs include “My Eyes Say It All” and the hidden track “Nevermind.” With ten songs on the album, Attest is a great opportunity for new fans to get a broad taste of some provocative yet aggressive metal that is true to its roots. Released September 2012, the album is available for download from Dropbox at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fspr3lxzfzkedcc/_mhnL8CC8w.
Monet - Life Size Mirror by Patrick Ross
Rating:
★ ★ ★ 1/2
Monet’s “Life Size Mirror” is a welcome change of pace to today’s musical aspirations of her generation, as it contains a potpourri of musical styles and influences that evoke a sense of past musical raptures and glories of day’s long past. I found the inspirations of jazz, gospel, funk, dance, and rhythm & blues evident in the albums overall soundlandscape. But also a sense of clutter within the instrumentation arrangements overall, simply put, too much going on at the same time. As she strives to evince to her listeners the inner voice of her musicality, it’s overshadowed by out of key vocals and aimless melodies that express technical proficiency, but lacking in melodic musical resolve. I really want to praise this effort whole-heartedly and to tell you that there is something here that speaks to the heart, and truly there is evidence of this on this album. But there is also a sense of the avant-garde spirit, which takes it into a realm that lacks true personal direction. Truly I sense the need to be different on her part as an artist, but also of ambition unfulfilled and potential unreached, that only time and experience bring to an artist’s palette. I love the idea of this album’s themes and I applaud the effort, and can only say, “strive for more clarity and definition next time.” I am sure that there are fans that will welcome this effort by Monet!
David J. Caron - Thru Ever Ending Black by Patrick Ross
Rating:
★★★
Irish-Italian David J. Caron’s debut album Thru Ever Ending Black finds its uniqueness in the fact that there are 28 songs on it. While this is unheard of in the annals of music, it is to say the least unprecedented. Does this in of it self make Caron unique remains to be seen. Obviously talented as a musician and lyrically proficient, I found in listening that I was still waiting for that moment when an artist enfolds you in the journey of their vision. While I am sure that there will be many who will be fascinated and overwhelmed by the body of work that is represented on the album, and ready to proclaim Caron as a rock god reborn. I couldn’t help feeling like there was some element that was still missing, this is not to say that the music isn’t infectious or inviting, it is well done. But there were no peaks or valleys to be found upon which I could find a point of reference, and maybe that is the cliché to be found here. The pace and tempo was too constant perhaps through out the entire album. I found no particular track that touched me or stood out in my mind as a favorite, and maybe with constant listening some one song might eventually jump out and grab me, only time will tell. Maybe it is an acquired taste that has not struck a cord with me yet.
