Chantel Atkins (CEO/Owner) I started The Rhythmic Lounge in December 2010. At its start, it was a fairly simple website with the purpose of giving people a place to promote their talents and network. I had no idea that less than two years later it would transform into something much bigger. The website then underwent a complete revamp in July 2011, with a brand new look and the addition of many new features, including the creation of The Rhythmic Lounge Radio. Following suit, the radio started out as merely a 24/7 stream of hand-picked music submitted by talented musicians from the website but is now an integral part of the company. Listeners from all over the world tune in regularly to hear the wide variety of music, as well as the educational, musical and talk-radio shows that we now host. The radio’s success has only made me realize The Rhythmic Lounge could take me in new directions everyday rather than the other way around, which is why a digital magazine seemed like the next step. I’m incredibly proud to present to you hardworking artists and entertainers in this magazine and on the site, so enjoy! Be sure to go to www.therhythm iclounge.com to see the profiles for the great talent displayed in this issue and take a look at our new magazine site at http://w w w .trlm agazine.com Thanks for the support, and happy reading!

Michael Karr by Patrick Ross

Musician Michael Karr is one of those rare instances of humble musical genius. I spoke with Michael over the phone recently to talk with him about what inspired the music from his latest album entitled “Think It Over” on which he is the sole instrumentalist on all the cuts with one exception, the vocals sung by the late Izzy Rivera. A very warm and soft-spoken individual, it is through his music that Michael finds his best expression I believe. Inspired by his father a multiinstrumental musician who took him everywhere as a child and exposing him to various musical settings, he began his voyage through music at the tender age of eleven on his first recording dates with the Pittsburg Youth Symphony as a soloist. His ability and talent recognized by Trombonist Randy Purcell earned him a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University. After completing his education and receiving two Bachelors degrees by age 19, he began playing and touring nationally and in Europe. Playing with a veritable who’s who of musical groups and artist, a list of which would go beyond the scope of this article, suffice it to say he has earned the respect of many great and talented musicians over the course of his career. Equally talented on both piano and trumpet, he is also an arranger, lyricist, composer, engineer, and producer. Having been signed to various labels during his career and producing a top ten hit on Billboards R&B charts with Stanley Fields cover of “You, Me & He” on the 3C label. It is the women in his life that have most inspired him, as is the case with his daughter after whom the track “Sarina (Sarah)” on his latest album is named. A resident musician in many notable jazz venues throughout New York City, and almost every club east of the Rockies – from after hours clubs, stadiums, and two Presidential Inaugural Balls. He is the leader of Michael’s Karrtet™, which features the musicianship of Ron Affif, Victor Jones, John Benitez, Randy Johnston, Alex Blake, and Essiet O. Essiet. Jazz Improv magazine has him listed as “Noteworthy Performance”. Michael Karr is the genuine, real deal, personally and musically. http://www.michaelkarr.com http://www.facebook.com/pages/Michael-Karr/29741212167 http://www.linkedin.com/pub/michael-karr/1b/3a9/2b4 http://www.myspace.com/michaeljkarrmusic http://twitter.com/alakarr http://www.reverbnation.com/alakarr http://www.numubu.com/152817-profile-michael-karr.html http://www.youtube.com/user/michaelkarr!

Art & Music Randy Stahla & Friends (Continued)

I have been a musician since I was very young. I played the drums in a country-‐western band starting in the eighth grade. Then a few friends and I started a rock band when I was in the ninth grade and that gig lasted all through high school. We played all over Colorado at various venues. When I was a junior in high school I auditioned for a group out of Los Angeles. The next summer I went on a tour with them from California across the southern US, then the Caribbean for 3 weeks and then Central America. After that I played drums in a group and toured all over Washington state and also went up into Vancouver B.C.; after that I played for all types of events including large musical productions and with small groups. A few years later I took up the piano and then the synthesizer. I started composing and recording my own music. I graduated with a degree in Audio-‐TV production from a community college. I had always been interested in both art and music. In 2006 I began learning how to use animation and 3D modeling programs and created my own animation. I also wrote a novel called "Glass Dawn" which is the basis of the animation. I have had a great concern for those who have lost a loved one. A few years ago my brother-‐in-‐law took his own life. It was very sad, and shook our family to the core. I wrote a story and read it during his funeral. A lot of people were encouraged, and so I began to gather my poetry and stories together to publish on a web site. During a trip to Phoenix, Arizona, I was caught in the middle of a snow storm on the desert. I had a video camera with me and recorded it. This event had a huge effect on me. No matter where I looked, very large snow flakes were falling softly on the desert cactus. The ground was soon covered with a white blanket of snow. sno This blanket of snow became an allegory to me. I saw an "emotional desert" being covered by beau-‐ tiful snow which cooled everything down and provided water in a dry, thirsty land. I also saw the snow as being symbolic of the presence of God in every direction. No matter where you looked, God was there to provide comfort and encouragement in the midst of the loss of a loved one or other difficulty. I decided to call my web site DesertSnow.org, and it officially began in January, 2004. Since then I have added more and more pictures, stories, poems, and features to encourage people who have suffered a loss. It isn't just for those who have lost a loved one now. It's for people who have gone through a divorce or lost their business or their dreams. When I started the web site, I realized how powerful pictures could be if they accompanied poems and stories. My goal was to create a web site that would be an "emotional mirror" so that people could see how they felt and deal with their feelings in a constructive manner. The web site is free and is always open. I like to experiment with unusual sounds and percussion in my music. I once heard that "Music is serial art -‐ it is important to surprise your audience with new and unexpected sounds, rhythms, and changes to keep people interested." I also like to create pictures that are striking and emphasize a point in something I have written in a story or poem. I believe we live in a "picture generation." People are so used to viewing multime-‐ dia that combining pictures, music and stories is almost mandatory in order to get your message across. So I try to combine all these different art forms into one experience for a listener -‐ viewer. Continued...

DesertSnow.org I live in Colorado, and this state is truly colorful. I have lived around color all my life, and I think it is partly responsible for what inspires me. I am amazed more and more each day with how beautiful and surprisingly intricate the world around me is. I have always loved science as well as the arts, and the world is incredible when you view it from an artistic or scientific vantage point. I love to learn, and I am always exploring. When I was 13 years old I asked Jesus Christ to come into my life and be my friend forever. foreve I asked him to give me wisdom, and show me great things. He has been my best friend and I know that he is real and answers prayer. I have seen many miracles in my life, including the striking changes for the better that occurred after my Mom and step-Dad decided to follow Jesus. I wasn't raised in a Christian home; I didn't follow Christ because I was taught to do that. In fact, my parents were against it. I can't stand to see people get hurt. I don't even cheer at the theater when the "bad guy" gets it. I can only see that he / she was once a young child and that God loves everyone. The Bible says that "God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked." Anyone who has used the Bible to justify violence or other crimes is certainly not using the message in the right way. Even when Jesus was wronged, he didn't "get even." He loves people, even his enemies. And God is not in a "bad mood" - God loves people and wants them to know his Son Jesus. I wrote a poem about how Jesus feels about everyone, and what he did to show true love. It's called "Dusty Roads," and you can read it in this edition (see the inside back cover). A friend of mine (Kari Fleskes) did a pencil drawing of what she thinks he looks like. I really like her drawing; it's very warm and inviting, and you can see the kindness in his eyes. I am an artist, musician, poet, and animator. animato I want to use everything I can possibly do to help, encourage, and show kindness to people in this world. And I want them to know that Jesus Christ is the person who has led me my whole life. I want them to know, too, that Jesus Christ wants to be their best friend and that he is able to work miracles for anyone who sincerely seeks him. http://www.DesertSnow.org

So what is the difference between a singer and an artist? First of all, a singer is one who determined (hopefully through honest consideration and consultation) that they have a singing voice that people like listening to and are able to sing a song – well. To take that even further, a true singer is one that has realized their talent for singing and has taken the steps to hone their skills. This aspect of becoming better at what you do can be summed up in two words voice training (or vocal lessons). In case you forgot…nobody’s perfect! Think of any great singer, either past or present – Whitney, Celine, Luther, Sinatra – they all had vocal training, either before establishing their career or during that process. In becoming great at anything you need to not only train, but you must practice. Michael Jordan, undoubtedly one of the best basketball players to date, could not have achieved all he did without consistent practice. All the athletic, acting and musical greats – all practice consistently. Singing is no different. Vocal exercises daily, or at a minimum, every other day will get your voice to top notch status and ready to play in the big leagues. Otherwise, unless you’re Britney Spears lucky, you will remain a local act.

many mainstream artists do not write their own songs, so if you are coming into the market as a singer-songwriter, you already have an advantage and more money in your pockets. Not only will you be able to write (or help in writing) your own songs, but if you are good at what you do, you can be asked to write for other artists. And again, like I mentioned previously, the only way to become good at what you do, is to practice! Yes, even in songwriting, listen to what is on the radio and follow suit, or if you choose to be a niche writer (writing for a particular genre/style) get into the habit of writing all the time. In addition to singing and songwriting, if you play an instrument, you too are even further ahead. Or if you play an instrument and write, you too can call yourself an artist. An artist is one that creates art, and in creating, you tap into who you are and what you know and make something of it. You can’t call yourself an artist if you only reproduce what has already been created (performing another person’s songs). So to all you aspiring artists, get to creating and only then can you look forward to a fulfilling and enduring music career.

Essince (TRL): How long have you been doing music? Veeno: I've been writing since I was 15 but I actually didn't start recording until I was 19, so I would say about 8 years. I never really had the opportunity to record what I was writing until I was 19 so I kind of always just kept my rhymes to myself. When I started writing and recording was just a hobby and something I had fun with, I never really took it serious. I started taking it serious right around when I turned 23. That was the turning point when I started putting together an actual project instead of just releasing original music and remixes with really no direction. I started taking music more seriously, started to build my first project and began pushing myself as a solo artist. I released my first solo mixtape "Ridin Round The City" on my 24th birthday so I would say that was the turning point. Since then I can honestly say I have found myself as an artist and am very happy with my creative process, my delivery and flow that I have created. Essince (TRL): Did/do you do anything else in the hip-hop culture besides music? (produce, graffiti, etc). I've recently started dabbling in producing, just learning the basics of it and getting my feet wet. It's something I definitely want to experiment more with this year and get a better grasp on. I look at artists like Big K.R.I.T. and J Cole who rap as well as produce and I think it just makes you better overall as an artist and for your audience. You have the ability to control and direct a specific sound that you like and it also opens more doors when you bring more to the table than just rapping.

Essince (TRL): What is the Cleveland music scene like now? Has it grown (up or down) in the past 5 years? I feel the Cleveland music scene is at an all time high right now. People in Cleveland are actually starting to demand to hear their favorite local artists on the local radio stations here in Cleveland, that wasn't happening 5 years ago. I feel the emergence of MGK, Kid Cudi and King Chip in the industry has helped with this and has also brought more eyes and ears towards Cleveland. There is a lot of competition in Cleveland and as result of that there has been a lot of good music that has been coming out of Cleveland over the last couple years. The quality of the music as well as the production coming out of Cleveland has drastically improved and continues to get better day-by-day. Essince (TRL): How important is it for an independent artist to travel and perform? I believe it is very important for an artist to travel and perform. Out of town shows are always great, it gives you a chance to perform in front of an audience that may have never heard of you before and a chance to gain new fans. I never underestimate the power of word of mouth, it's great to have an Internet presence but to provide a memorable live performance for an out of town audience is just as important. I feel people are more likely to tell their friends about an artist based off of a live performance rather than a song they heard on Soundcloud. Essince (TRL): What are you currently working on? I just released my debut album "Myself as I Know It" back in August of 2013 so I'm still promoting that pretty heavy. You can find my album on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify and pretty much any online music store. It can also be streamed on my Soundcloud page. Currently I am working on a couple singles I'm going to be releasing over the summer and putting together an EP as my next project. It's still in the early phases of writing/recording but should be out before the end of 2014. Essince (TRL): Any final shout outs? Shout out to ImFromCleveland.com they are one of the biggest local blogs here in Cleveland and have always supported me and the really whole KushNERDS movement we got going on. Also shout out to the whole 2-1-Sick radio show crew for always playing my music on their show every Saturday which is broadcasted on 89.3 FM. Shout out to Essince as well for giving me this outlet to people on the west coast so they can get to know me and maybe get to know other Cleveland artists! ALBUM: Blow Flyy - It's Like I Got a Set of Wings! ! ! ! ! ! !

!

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Born Anthony Grant, "Blow Flyy" is a songwriter and Canadian HipHop/ Rap artist from Halifax/Dartmouth Nova Scotia, Canada. Blow Flyy is an artist that likes to work towards perfection. The music that the artist produces and pens are influenced by his family and passion to create great music. With a unique style in performance he delivers a new sound and flow to hip-hop through his to the point lyrics and nostalgic rhythms. Blow Flyy grew up writing poetry of inspiration, love and happiness; this would lead to his original flow and way that he composes his music. The artist likes to refer to his music as Hip-Hop/Pop because of the pop mix that is infused into his sound. Having been part of the underground Hip-Hop music scene, he took time to study how the music industry has changed and open doors through the Web for independent self financed artists similar to himself. He uses the online community to grow & perfect his craft while discovering new things he enjoys writing about. Along with finding his niche and the right genre suited for his new sound, he moves forward in the music industry with his contribution to the Hip-Hop/Pop Genre.

The flow in which the Canadian native raps does not necessarily rhyme, but since when did Rhyming every line become the must have for a hot song? Fans & reviewers find his persona and way of composing music quite enjoyable. The songs are clean, simple, but musical & entertaining. Today it is almost impossible to find a rapper that does not use profane lingo in every line of their track because a majority of them have a difficult time creating clean content. Experiencing his music without heavy profanity is like a breath of fresh air. His sound is relevant & universal with a basic appeal to music listeners worldwide. He gives his fans & music listeners his all. Blow_Flyy is a new age artist with new thought process when it comes to the industry. He like most artists who are true to the game and themselves wants to pursue his career solely as an independent artist. While many artists are looking to be signed, he remains loyal to his identity and genre. As an artist who has clean content, he has potential to gain a lot of respect within the wide spectrum of the industry. Respect with parental units and less vulgar entities will bring new money in a present yet undisturbed revenue stream. Blow_Flyy is destined to make a dent in the industry starting in Canada, to the U.S., and then worldwide, definitely keep your eyes on this artist. !

Album Reviews Nancy Sanchez - Ruby in L.A. by Patrick Ross

Rating:

★★★★★

Crossing borders seems to be a natural theme in Nancy Sanchez life and music. Born in Toluca, Mexico she now resides in Orange County, California. Her debut album “Ruby in L.A.” encapsulates the truth of her music and talent perfectly summed up. Her lyrics and melodies are delightfully energetic and refreshing, as she departs from the typical path that most pop artists traverse along the path to success. Truly she is crossing borders and does it with grace and style, which surprises and invites the listener along the journey. Opening with the song “Hippo” you immediately are charmed with the metaphoric tale of love “just around the corner”. On “In Blue” she shows us her vulnerability and intimacies, while “Noches de Amor” explores her Latin musical roots. Stylistically tasteful direction by Grammy Winning producer Dave Way, and co- producers David J. Carpenter and Evan Stone as well as collaboration from Tony Guerrero on Trumpet and Greg Leisz on steel guitar help to personify and showcase Nancy Sanchez the artist and singer-songwriter with compelling beauty. The production is neither over the top nor wanting in any respect, which lends a very refreshing aspect to this pop music foray. It is easy to see why Nancy is a three-time award winner for Best Latin & Best Jazz artist in Orange County. I will not categorize her, but invite you to discover her music for yourself and come to your own conclusions. http://www.nancysanchezmusic.com https://www.facebook.com/nancysanchezmusic https://twitter.com/NancySanchez_ http://instagram.com/nancysanchezmusic# https://www.reverbnation.com/nancysanchez

Uzi Dre - Down Deep in the Dirt by William Kryjak !

Rating: ★

★ 1/2

Uzi Dre is an up-and-coming rapper from Clearwater, FL. On his most recent album Down Deep in the Dirt, he explores themes of life on the street and the “true” dirty south where he grew up. Along the way to his current career he spent some time in jail for dealing drugs, but has recently found commercial success hosting events and even lending his talents towards recording a car commercial. Overall, Uzi Dre is on the right track and this album is definitely a step in the right direction.! The first thing that struck me about Uzi Dre was his flow. His rhymes come at you full speed, but hit perfectly on the beat. However, he needs to work on refining his style. For example, on the song “The Games we Play”, there is a really low key vibe, yet we get a supersonic approach. What would have been nice here would be to either slow down to fit the mood, or team up with someone who could sing a slow hook and then contrast that with fast rhymes over the verses. Uzi Dre can rap, but he needs to find his flow. Speaking of hooks, this was another thing that I was a little disappointed with on the album. If you really want to make a splash you need to catch people’s ears. There are rappers who can get away with having no chorus in their song, but I think at this point in Uzi Dre’s career he would be well suited to work on making some solid hooks, and then pair those up with some really good beats. This will definitely come in time, especially as he gains more recognition and works with more people, but it is not something to be overlooked. Out of the whole album “Revenge” is my favorite track. It is one song that feels like it really fits its style and that he has fun on - it is so refreshing when artists do this. What’s great about Uzi Dre is that he doesn’t hold back. I love the honesty in his lyrics and the sort of cathartic feel this album has to it. In my opinion these real emotions and words are what separates good music from great music. It isn’t perfect by any means, but there is definitely potential here. If Uzi Dre can keep telling his story, keep spitting fire, and work more on the production side of things, there is definitely room for him to grow. Think it’s a game? Then you need to work to be the best.
