FRIDAY, MAY 21, 2021 - ALEXANDER DOLLS - THE 3RD GOLDEN ERA

Dolls by Madame Alexander and the Alexander Doll Company spanned three Golden Eras. First, the celebrity and child dolls of the 1930s, followed by the extraordinary fashion ladies of the 1950s, and finally by the new-yet-retro designs of the late 1980s through early 2000s.

It is this final group that is the focus of Theriault’s May 21, “50-Forward” auction. Highlighted are dolls produced just prior to the sale of the company in 1988, followed by the reinvigorated line after the sale when a completely new team of designers headed by Daun Fallon joined the company, along with selections from the Gale Jarvis years when totally new fashion-face sculpts and limited edition runs made exclusively for doll club events or luxury stores such as Neiman Marcus or FAO Schwarz were created.

Most of these dolls are mint in original boxes, complete with accessories and documents, from the private collections of the Trudy Butler and Martha Hester, where they have been carefully stored for a number of years. A wonderful library of more than 150 long out-of-print reference books on all subjects related to the collecting of childhood dolls, toys, and ephemera – books whose content cannot be found on the internet, books which detail long-missing early collections, books who remind us of how and why we began collecting – are offered in this specialty auction. Their subjects range from Barbie to Bru, from toy soldiers to Kewpie, from costuming to coiffure, and from composition dolls to cloth dolls, and every conceivable subject in-between.
