Director’s Notes

Welcome to the Oregon wilderness in the 1850s, as we discover the rip-roaring, romantic story of Milly, a young bride, and her plan to civilize and marry off her six rowdy brothers-in-law to ensure the success of her marriage. A truly rollicking fun adventure, Milly turns her unkempt brothers into manly gentlemen and turns desire into romance.

Sara Dempsey Director

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers had a successful national tour and then opened on Broadway at the Alvin Theatre on July 8, 1982. It received a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score. The Broadway musical is based on the 1954 Stanley Donen film of the same name. The film premiered at Loew's, before being released at Radio City Music Hall in New York on July 22, 1954. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was the longest-ever running film at Radio City in its time, and even President Eisenhower urged his fellow Americans to go and see it. This is the first time I have had the pleasure of directing a show that is taken place in our home of Oregon. By directing this show, I have gained new appreciation for the beauty of our landscape, heritage and history. I also discovered how far we have come in the treatment and expectations of women since 1850 and even since 1982, when the musical was written. We have had many laughs over some of the antiquated ways men courted women and won their hearts. Finally, I have had a wonderful time with a great group of students, nothing is quite like challenging your students and having them rise to the occasion. I am proud of our wonderful cast and crew. By creating this production, they gain confidence, grace and pride. I also appreciate the amazing support of their parents. Our production is truly a community affair. Our students create, build, and paint, with the help of our remarkable parent and community volunteers, every aspect of this production. It is exhilarating for me to see the creativity and talents that are developed by our students when our community comes together. Our parents, volunteers and associates are so appreciated and cherished. The love and hard work of many, to whom I am most grateful, truly makes putting on our productions a joy. Goin’ courtin’ has never been so much fun! Sit back and enjoy as we see the brothers discover how to woo their new found loves and turn every day into a Wonderful, Wonderful Day!
