financial report

The fiscal year was very positive. The Ringling’s operating budget for fiscal year 2012-13 was $15 million. earned income was up in almost all categories with admissions reaching over 340,000 visitors for the first time and income from admissions of over $3.8 million. Due to the support of members and donors like you, we ended the year with a surplus over $600,000 that will go into reserves for capital expenditures and emergency funds.

RINGLING ANNUAL R e VI e W

It is simple. Without your support, we would not be able to achieve the quality of programming we provide to the state of Florida each year. your gifts support programming — not lighting, not air conditioning, not maintenance, — but exciting experiences that connect our diverse audiences with the vast collections and deep history of this wonderful museum.

Thank you for what you do to make The Ringling a top cultural destination and a vital educational resource for our local community, Florida State University, and the state of Florida.

I hope you enjoy reading about our accomplishments over the past year.

program highlights M AD e POSSIBL e By yOU !

Five significant exhibitions and two performance art series created the framework for many of our programs this past year.

Deco Japan, Shaping Art and Culture

July 13 ‒ October 28

An entirely unfamiliar genre, Deco Japan introduced Japanese Art Deco during the Taisho and early Showa epochs (1912-45). Organized by Art Services International the exhibition was drawn from the collection of Bob and Mary Levenson of Clearwater, Florida. Comprised of over one hundred objects the exhibition was well received by our community attracting many visitors.

Codex, March 30 ‒ Oct 14

An installation by Sanford Biggers, introduced the work of this nationally recognized contemporary artist. Curated by Matthew McLendon and made possible through a collaboration with the Hermitage Artist Retreat, Codex was comprised of a series of antique quilts on which the artist painted images related to the Underground Railroad and the slave trade’s Central Passage. This exhibition is now traveling under The Ringling’s auspices broadening our impact around the country.

Herb Ritts: LA Style, February 22 ‒ May 19

Paolo Veronese: A Master and His Workshop

December 7 ‒ April 14

A major accomplishment by The Ringling, Curator Virginia Brilliant worked over four years to assemble this collection of Veronese paintings in North American collections and borrowed work from over 30 lenders from all across the U.S. and Canada. A major scholarly catalogue published and distributed by SCALA publishers in London accompanied the exhibition and included articles by some of the top Renaissance scholars of today.

The modern galleries in the Searing Wing were dedicated to this collection of Ritts’ work from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The Ringling was one of only two venues outside of L.A. for this first serious exhibition of the late fashion and art photographer. One of our most popular exhibitions to date, Ritts was very well received by our visitors and in the regional press.

American Moderns, 1910-1960: From O’Keeffe to Rockwell

June 14 ‒ September 8

The final exhibition for this year was from the Brooklyn Museum. This exhibition featured all of the great modernist painters from the first half of the 20th century and included significant works by these and other artists that exemplified their unique contributions to modern culture. The opening reception was our largest ever with over 900 members attending.

We recently revealed designs for a new center for Asian Art. The beautifully designed wing by renowned architects Machado and Silvetti Associates, whose other museum projects include the Mint Museum in Charlotte and the Getty Villa in Malibu, is set to open in the fall of 2015. The wing will combine a striking new pavilion with renovated sections of the existing West Wing. It will feature Asian art galleries, a small object and paper storage facilties, study and reading rooms, and a lecture theater with a spectacular view of the grounds and bay. The new study center will provide education opportunities for students and scholars from around the world. We were thrilled to welcome our new Wall-Apelt Curator of Asian Art, Dr. Fan Zhang, to the museum this past year to lead program development for the new center. Dr. Zhang comes to The Ringling from Smith College and holds a B.A. in Archaeology from Jilin University in Changchun, China and Ph.D. in Art History from Brown University.

The education department coordinated docent tours that reached over 130,000 visitors at the Ca d’Zan, Circus Museum, and the Art Museum. This number ranks The Ringling 4th highest for docent tours out of the largest 210 art museums in North America. View Point lectures with leading scholars accompanied every exhibition and Gallery Walk and Talks were also well received, oftentimes attracting over 100 visitors for the gallery program. For the Veronese exhibition, a major symposium was organized by the department and was exceptionally well attended by students, including an art history class from Florida State University’s College of Visual Art, Theater and Dance.

We remain dedicated to serving our youngest visitors as well. This past year more than 8,000 K-12 students were served with a variety of hands-on programming and more than 200 guided tours were provided to school groups throughout the year. In addition, we launched a new library program, ROAR! - The Ringling Order of Art Readers. The library welcomed children ages 4 – 7 and their families for a story time and related art activity. A special visit from our own Ringling Lion topped off the experience and each child received a ROAR! Badge of Honor. This popular program will continue and expand this coming year.

In addition, we are planning exciting new collaborations with Florida State University. We look forward to welcoming students from the Museum Studies program and from the Museum education doctoral program to the estate for intensive study with our staff in the fall of 2015. This new collaboration will serve as a model for ways that The Ringling can support undergraduate and graduate research while providing our team new ideas for programming that will enhance the visitor experience.

Hundreds of objects were added to the collection this year in almost every area of our collecting interests. Items of note are the over 1,600 photographs gifted by Warren and Margot Coville and which were featured in an exhibition in the collection galleries in the winter months. Additionally we received a gift of 35 works of glass from Nancy and Philip Kotler and a pledge of their entire collection over time. We also received an important collection of the work of Philadelphia artist Thomas Chimes. We purchased at auction a painting from the Master of Rubens, Otto van Veen, which is an important addition to our european Masterworks collection.

Artwork from the collection traveled all over the world. The Gran Palais Paris, MAPFRe Madrid, Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona, and the Musee d’Orsay are only a few of the international institutions that featured work from The Ringling’s collection this year. Nationally, work traveled to Chicago, New york City, Portland (Me) and Minneapolis among others. The Ringling’s superb collection continues to be highly sought after by museums around the world.
