Philadelphia • December, 1776 The
American Revolutionary War, or the American War of Independence was fought between Great Britain and the thirteen British colonies between the years 1775 and 1783. The eight-year struggle against the political and economic policies of the British Empire had really just begun and was not halted by The Declaration of Independence earlier that year. The newly declared United States of America was entering a long and cold road to freedom with some decisive turns to be made in late December 1776. British General William Howe had advanced his army south into New Jersey after fair weather battles in New York, but poorer, winter weather conditions soon drove the British into encampments across the state. The fervor of our Patriot forces was boosted on December 19 when a new pamphlet titled “The American Crisis” written by Thomas Paine, was published. “These are the times that try men’s souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” Within a day of its publication in Philadelphia, General Washington ordered Paine’s callto-action to be read to all Patriot forces under his command. It enlivened and uplifted the soldiers and afforded tolerance of the harsh 1776 winter’s difficult conditions. The morale boost of Paine’s pamphlet fueled the subsequent Battle of Trenton. Led by Washington, a small army of around 2,400 men crossed the Delaware River to attack Hessian troops in Trenton, N.J. in the early hours of December 26th. Washington’s victory raised troop morale and the spirits of the American colonists and is seen as a turning point in the American War of Independence. Nutcracker 1776 is set amidst this turning point in the birth of our nation and is inspired by Philadelphia’s Revolutionary history. We hope you enjoy our spirited adaptation of the classic tale of The Nutcracker (circa 1892) in its first iteration (circa 1776)! Written by: The Rock School Advancement Team, Richard Clark, Boston Gordon, & David Furioni with a special thanks to The Museum of the American Revolution
Story ACT ONE It’s the holiday season and the year is 1776. Families and friends are gathering in Philadelphia for the annual tree lighting party at the Olde City Tavern Inn. Abby and her little brother Richard join the rest of the Stockton family and guests of the Inn, along with Benjamin Franklin and his student Johnny, a young cadet. The Olde City Tavern is the center of business and society where anyone and everyone meet. Thomas Jefferson is writing about freedom, George Washington arrives just in time to partake in the feast, and there is lovely music and dancing in the hall. Ben presents Abby with the most magnificent gift, an enchanted Nutcracker. Ben summons his newest invention, life-size dancing dolls, as entertainment for the guests. Suddenly, a group of carousing cadets join the party. Exhausted from dancing, they then disappear into the night. Ben sprinkles magic dust into the air, and Lady Liberty and her Stars and Starlets appear. The families and partygoers retire for the evening, leaving Abby where she has fallen asleep with her Nutcracker. The Dew Drop Fairy and her Dream Fairies appear and cast a spell on the Tavern and everyone in it. Suddenly, Redcoat Mice emerge taking a keen interest in the sleeping Abby and her Nutcracker. The clock strikes 12 and Abby awakens, just as the mice are ready to kidnap her and her Nutcracker. Ben Franklin comes to her rescue and frightens away the mice with magical lightning. Ben consoles Abby as the magic continues: the Christmas tree grows, as do the Toy Soldiers led by a life-size Nutcracker who is revealed as Johnny, and leads the Toy Soldiers in a mighty battle against the Redcoat Mice. When the red-caped, massive General Mouse Howe appears, things start to look grim, until Abby joins the battle to help, and General Mouse Howe is defeated. Abby and Johnny are greeted by the Snow Princess and her Prince and are invited to join them in a dance through the land of swirling snow. Then Abby and Johnny continue on a magic sleigh ride in their journey to the Land of Toys and Sweets.
ACT TWO Abby and Johnny arrive at the Land of Toys and Sweets and are greeted by Ben Franklin and the Dew Drop Fairy opening the gate with a magical key. This reveals mountains of cake topped with whipped cream and candy, sweetly glazed flowers and butter cream frosting as far as the eye can see. The Dew Drop Fairy and Toy Angels welcome Abby and Johnny with grace and joy, celebrating the children’s arrival into the land of enchantment.
Dancers from around the world delightfully perform as they present the children with delicious sweets from their lands. The vivacious Spanish Chocolate Turron, the quiet and powerful Princesses of Persia, the charming Chinese Dragon Candy, the energetic English Toffee, the jumping Russian Pashkas, and the Waltz of the Flower Fairies all join in the festivities. The Candy Cavalier escorts the Sugar Plum Fairy to center stage and the captivating pair dance lighter than air, completing Abby and Johnny’s perfect evening. All join in a glorious Grande Finale to freedom. Abby and Johnny live happily ever after.
