... but still staying close to his

11

Hancock County roots

Beginning his musical début at the age of three, Sneedville native Morgan Wallen is wowing crowds across the nation. The rising 24-year-old musical sensation gives his mother much credit for his success. “My mom was probably the biggest influence in my career, mostly because she was the one who encouraged me to pursue music and really give it a shot. One of my biggest influences from a songwriting and artist standpoint is Eric Church. Musically, I’m also inspired by Southern rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and CCR. “ Morgan’s first public appearance was at Mulberry Baptist Church in Hancock County. Being a preacher’s kid, Morgan said, “I wouldn’t trade how I was raised for anything. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel around the country a fair bit and have some incredible experiences, but those things always make me appreciate how I grew up even more.” As a child, he didn’t perform much outside Morgan performing in the July of church because he 2014 Sneedville Homecoming was focused on sports. Concert Morgan began playing on competitive baseball teams until an injury set him back during his senior year of high school. “There are things I learned playing ball that still motivate me in my career today,” he told the Rogersville Review for its 2018 edition of Discover Hancock County magazine. “I think it teaches you about healthy competition, being a leader and teammate, and having the discipline to work hard.” He is still an avid sports fan hitting the basketball court in his free time and he continues to be true to his roots as a huge TN Volunteer fan. Morgan attended the same high school as Kenny Chesney ... Gibbs High School, in Corryton. Chesney actually shot his Boys of Fall music video at Gibbs while Morgan was in school there. Although he hasn’t had the opportunity to meet Chesney yet, he is

a huge fan of his music. When asked about his hometown and how he gives back, he replied, “I always feel connected to the community and where I grew up, so I’m proud to represent East Tennessee. I think my debut single, The Way I Talk, reflects that and celebrates those roots. To me, the most important thing is just be myself at all times and being proud of where I came from is a big part of that.“ Morgan never performed publicly outside of church until he performed on The Voice. At the age of 22, after his time on the popular TV show, he moved to Nashville. “I got to play some of the spots in Nashville, like Whiskey Jam at Winners. It’s like a rite of passage for Country artists,” he said. Shorty after moving to Music City, he met his agent and label team and began developing his writing skills. He has worked with Craig Wiseman writing Live Like You Were Dying Dying, Rodney Clawson with Dirt Dirt, Chris Tompkins on Drunk on a Plane, Highway Don’t Care with The Warren Brothers, Tommy Cecil on Home Alone Tonight Tonight, and Matt Dragstrem with Sippin’ on Fire Fire. He has also been featured as writer on A Thousand Horses’ single Preachin’ To The Choir Choir, along with songs by Jason Aldean, Kane Brown, and Dustin Lynch. His debut single, The Way I Talk, released on September 12, 2016, took the world by storm as one of the most played and purchased singles nationwide. The song was a Top 30 hit on country radio charts, received more than 19 million plays on Spotify, and was highlighted on Spotify’s Wild Country, New Boots, and New Music Friday playlists. Last year, Morgan continued his journey toward the top when Country Music Television (CMT) exclusively premiered the music video for his hit, The Way I Talk. He was also named one of Rolling Stone’s 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know. Continued on page 13

Then, Morgan spent the summer opening on selected dates with Florida Georgia Line’s The Smooth Tour 2017. “Getting to tour with Florida Georgia Line has been an incredible learning experience, just getting to watch them entertain and see how they treat their crew and people with them on the road.,” he said. Morgan was also featured support on Chris Lane’s Take Back Home Tour in the fall before rounding out the year opening for Granger Smith’s Don’t Tread On Me Tour. In November, Morgan’s latest single, Up Down, featuring Florida Georgia Line, took the airways by storm. In just a few short days, the down-home living tribute has landed at #4 on Spotify’s U.S. and #6 on Global Viral Top 50 charts. The hit has had more than 10 million plays. Morgan began the new year by being named one of CMT’s 2018 “Listen Up” artists and kicking off his first headlining tour, the UP Down Tour. The tour began on February 2 in Indianapolis then continues around the southeast and east coast through the end of March before hitting the west coast. “In April, we have a few dates in California, where I’m also performing at Stagecoach for the first time, and wrap up April 28 in Las Vegas. We have a show in Knoxville on March 30 at Cotton Eyed Joe’s, so I’m excited to be back playing for my hometown again.“ For a full schedule of Morgan’s tour, visit his website at MorganWallen.com or follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

... a name that is known in Hancock County and around the world

Kristen, Heather, Mel and Evan Welch

GREENE’S

TRACTOR COMPANY, LLC SNEEDVILLE -- Greene’s Tractor Company, LLC has been in business for more than thirty years, but a little over a year ago, it began a future under new ownership. At 38 years old, Mel Welch is now the CEO and General Manager of Greene’s Tractor Company. Originally from the Knoxville and Union County area, he spent most of his childhood on his family’s farms. Now, he operates a farm of Balancer Beef Cattle and quarter horses in Sneedville with his wife, Heather, and their children, Kristen and Evan. The original name of the company was Greene’s Trailer & Equipment, but when ownership changed, the name had to change as well.

“I didn’t want to completely change the name right away,” Mel said. “I understand that many people don’t adjust to change very well, but I wanted to let people know the same service they received before would continue with the new owners. That is how the name Greene’s Tractor Company, LLC was born.” Greene’s Tractor Company was originally opened by David Greene, Sr., to fill the need of providing agricultural equipment sales and service to Hancock County and surrounding areas. Over the course of more than 30 years, the small hometown business grew into an international enterprise as sales of parts and equipment Continued on page 20

From page 19

expanded to reach as far as Egypt, Indonesia, and the Netherlands. Eventually, David purchased Kiefer Manufacturing, LLC, a well-known tractor manufacturer also located in Hancock County. At that point, he decided to pass Greene’s Tractor Company on to someone else. “David approached me with the opportunity to continue the business, and I took it,” Mel said. “We have expanded our market via internet-based sales with over $4 million in sales in 2017 alone.” When asked who has helped him be successful, Mel said, “First and foremost, I would have to thank God for the opportunities he has given me. I would have to, of course, give credit to my friend David Greene for the opportunity to take the reins to the business and roll with it.” Other factors also contributed to Mel’s success. Before taking on the business, he worked for the former owner part-time and knew all the ins-and-outs of how the business functioned. He also has almost 20 years in the logistics and inventory control fields, and he knew how to streamline the business and cost savings in inventory, freight costs, and sales options. Today, Greene’s Tractor is home to 10 employees, including full time mechanics certified and trained by Kioti Tractor. There are also three other department heads: Matthew Perry, Parts Manager, David Seal, Service Manager, and Neal Lawson, Sales Manager. “I have to give credit to my employees,” Mel said. “All of

the employees are who keep the company running smoothly. I’ve been the low man on the pole before, and I rose up from there. I know that good, happy employees are the key to a successfully-run company. If they enjoy who they work for, their quality of work will be much more.” Greene’s Tractor sells new and used tractors. They are a 5-paw Kioti Dealer and LS Tractor Dealer, as well as a dealer and certified installer for CM Truckbeds, and many trailer manufacturers such as CM, Loadtrail, Kiefer, Lawrimore, and Sure-Trac. They sell and install more than 200 truck beds per year to individuals and area truck dealers, such as Jim Cogdill Dodge in Knoxville. Further, they take special orders on pretty much anything from parts to equipment or trailers with a 10% down payment on large special orders. The company’s short-term goals are to expand in online parts sales and to increase the availability of inventory to its customers. In the long-term, they want to steadily grow to the point of possibly opening another dealership within the next ten years. Greene’s Tractor Company also gives back to its community through various avenues such as churches, sports teams, and Hancock Chamber partners. Mel said he would also like to thank the community for its support in making Greene’s Tractor Company a leading supplier in tractor sales and supplies. For sales and services, stop by and visit the folks at Greene’s Tractor Company at 2042 Main Street in Sneedville, TN, and be sure to tell Mel and the staff that you read about them in “Discover Hancock County” magazine. You can also visit their website at www.grntrail.com.

Kiefer Mfg & Sales, LLC On January 1, 2016, the father-son duo of David C. Greene, Sr. and Jr. set sail on a new adventure by purchasing Kiefer Manufacturing, Inc. The company, which manufactures horseand-livestock trailers, was originated in 1976 by Arden Kiefer in Kanawha, Iowa. Stellar Industries later acquired the business. In late 2015, Stellar decided to close the company, and that’s when the Greenes leaped into action to keep it alive in their hometown. When the company changed hands on January 1, 2016, it became known as Kiefer Mfg & Sales, LLC. The Greenes are no strangers in the entrepreneurial world as they have had numerous successful businesses. Their most recent business was Greene’s Trailer and Equipment, where they sold Kiefer trailers for years. This meant they were very knowledgeable of Kiefer Manufacturing prior to the acquisition. Upon purchasing the company, they decided to give their undivided attention to manufacturing trailers and sold Greene’s Trailer and Equipment. Complete with the management of David Greene, Jr., the hard work of forty-three veteran employees, the leadership of production manager, William Livengood, and the engineering expertise of Timothy Collins, Kiefer Mfg & Sales is more than equipped to carry on building high-quality, custom horse-and-

livestock trailers for years to come. The Greenes are dedicated to creating and developing products that will continue the growth of business so that they can provide an overall quality of life and work environment for everyone in the company. Custom trailers of all sizes can be ordered with a variety of options to fit the needs of most anyone. Some can even be equipped with living quarters. Pride is taken in providing a structural integrity to insure a safe and long-lasting home away from home for customers and their animals. Kiefer Mfg & Sales is a company that takes building high-quality trailers seriously. Kiefer Trailers have been sold in forty-eight states across America, internationally to Canada, and as far away as Europe. Many award-winning, well-known rodeo cowboys, including Ken McNabb, have traveled with Kiefer trailers for many years. When asked to whom he gives credit for the success of the company, David Jr. replied, “The good Lord, good employees, and good family.” For more information, visit www.kiefermfg.com.

Welcome to Our Beloved Hancock County

where the land is abundantly full full, with free-owing musical creeks and streams, Oh, the view is never dull! ...where the river runs through the mountains where the air is crisp and clear, and the land still gives forth its substance, and deer and turkey are near. It’s a place where we all found our home among folks who are friendly and dear who truly care for their families and friends and for us, who are now living here. By Teresa Suarez
