allie McAnally’s long-time dream came true in October of 2020 right in the mist of a pandemic. While other businesses were unfortunately closing their doors, Callie and her family were preparing for opening day at her fabulous shop, Salt & Light Boutique, on Main Street in Rogersville.

Callie is a Hawkins County native who moved to Sevierville with her family at the age of ten. In 2008, she made her way back when she married a local boy, Lance McAnally. The couple now resides in Mooresburg with their three sons, Mason, Milan, and Maddox. Callie said, “I never dreamed that God Callie, a full-time 1st grade teacher, wife, and mother would bring me back to Hawkins County, but I am so of three, was lead by faith to open her first brick-and- thankful that He did because it is truly home for me.” mortar business. Callie gives God the credit for planting a seed in her heart many years ago, and she knew that one day she would own her own shop. During the earlier days of COVID, Callie was teaching students virtually from home as many teachers were at the time. Callie said, “I was home from school for an extended amount of time as a teacher, and God started to water that seed during my early months at home. He began to reveal things to me, and He finally said that now is the time.” Then, her dream began to unfold. A short time later, Callie’s friend, Melissa Nelson, called her to tell her that a space owned by her and her husband, Steve, was vacant. At that point, Callie knew it was a God thing and things just started falling into place from there.

“It still amazes me that I opened during the thick of a pandemic when small businesses were closing everyday, and God allowed me to grow and thrive.” Callie added, “I always thought I would have a shop called ‘Callie & Co,’ but God showed me early on that the name would be ‘Salt & Light.” He kept leading her continued to page 20

Sharon Thames, Photographer By Rita Dykes Discover Hawkins County Contributor
S
haron Thames began her venture into the photography world as a child with a 110 camera. Do you remember the little rolls of film that you had to have developed into actual photos? The anticipation of waiting days to see the images that you had (hopefully) captured was downright brutal. Sharon said, “I was that girl, the one taking everyone’s photos and waiting what seemed like forever to see the finished product!” Although she started taking photos in elementary school, she didn’t realize that she was an actual photographer until she was a Senior in high school. Sharon was asked to take someone’s wedding pictures, and she accepted the challenge. From that day forward, she knew that she had been given a gift. Her family began to see her talent grow and always supported her photography endeavors. Sharon said, “I
actually received a Pentax K-1000 (a nice camera) for graduation that year, and I still have it.” Sharon continued to take photos but mostly for fun. One of her friends from work was pregnant and wanted black-and-white maternity photos. Sharon recalled. “She brought me two rolls of film, and we had a blast. After she had the photos developed, we took them to work and passed them around for everyone to see.” Soon after, Sharon began taking pictures of people she hardly knew. They would bring her film, and she would take the pictures and hand the film back. Sharon continued, “It took quite some time before I would take payment because I was having so much fun. But the day that I realized that my hobby was taking too much time away from my family was the day my hobby became a business! God brought me this business after I lost my job of 23 years.” continued to page 29

Her daughters, Tia and Tori, have always been her advocates as have many friends and other family members. Sharon said, “They contribute by giving me new ideas and creativity for photoshoots. I’ve had the best support system.” Tia added, “One thing that I think makes Mom so special, is that her clients aren’t just clients, they become family. For many, she goes through their lives capturing all their milestones. It’s so fun to look back over the years and see all the memories she has captured.”

She is capturing her client’s dreams with a snap of her camera, and they love her! Here is what just a few had to say:
“
Dolly Shaffer told Discover Hawkins County that Sharon has been capturing memories of her family for almost a decade. She elaborated by saying, “My daughter, Harper will be 9 this year and my son, Channing will be 5 and she has been there since the beginning. Every special life event we have captured with pictures because of her. Maternity, birth, engagement, wedding, every birthday, Christmas, and “just because” pictures. She is so much more than just a photographer, she is Mimi Sharon. That’s what my kids call her every time they see her and when she takes their pictures. She has become just like family and we are so thankful for her. Having all the pictures is great, but what makes it even better is having someone to take them that truly cares.”

While there, she signed a record deal with Warner Brothers, landed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, and received a production assignment with Jay Joyce. Andrea also co-wrote with numerous acclaimed songwriters and has had several sync placements, including one on the television series Nashville and an Apple advertisement that aired in Thailand. While spending time in Malibu, California, Andrea met Andrew Beath, who owns a large portion of the Pressmen’s Home property in Hawkins County. After the two met, Andrew became her mentor and dear friend. He often spoke fondly of his love of the beautiful and historic Pressmen’s Home property, so Andrea decided she had to see it for herself. Following her tour with Caitlyn Smith in 2018, Andrea came to Rogersville and never looked back. continued to page 42
42 Discover Hawkins County • 2022 After settling in, she hit the ground running with her passion to embrace the community, while continuing to write music and perform. Recently, Andrea received a grant from The Michael Doman Foundation to organize and teach workshops with Hawkins County’s elementary school children. During the workshops, she and the children will write and record songs for a fundraising event for arts education in the county’s school system. Her goal is to have some of the children perform their songs on stage at the event venue that she currently manages, The Castle Barn located at Pressmen’s Home. As if the entertainment industry doesn’t keep her busy enough, Andrea is pursuing another dream. In keeping with her focus on peace, harmony, and wellbeing, Andrea will be opening B Well Natural Health Store (B Well) in beautiful downtown Rogersville. She will stay true to B Well’s mission statement “to source the highest quality natural products for our local and online community, to provide empowering information on how we can encourage our own health and well-being, and to create a community/support system for all who are committed to leading healthier lives.” Andrea added, “No matter where people are along their journey to feel better in their bodies / minds / spirits, I want this place to be a hub where people can come to for support.” The store will offer products, such as: herbs, supplements (many will be whole-food based and meticulously sourced), clean beauty and household products, essential oils, homeopathic medicine, incense, dried-food goods, sweeteners, spices, natural continued to page 43

pet products, potent high-quality full-spectrum CBD, local English mountain spring water, and more. B Well will also offer traditional sauna session packages for up to 2 people per session. For some, routine sauna sessions have been known to improve overall health, wellness, and performance. Others credit time spent in a sauna as helping to relieve stress and providing much-needed relaxation. B Well personnel will be able to enlighten you on the benefits of the sauna and everything else the store has to offer. Later, Andrea would like to utilize the kitchen area and the additional space in the building for small groups. She said, “I would love to see these spaces filled up a couple times a month with small groups who are coming together to learn and grow. We can do wellness classes, cooking classes, book club, women’s gatherings, spiritual gatherings, songwriter in the rounds, and more.” Andrea will soon begin training to become a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. In keeping with B Well’s concept, Andrea wants to be a part of coordinating a local biodynamic food movement here in the area. “The industry of food is unfortunately much more concerned with profit margins than the health and well being of the people who are consuming their products. There are so many chemicals that are altering our body chemistry, many of which have been banned in other countries. All of this coupled with what’s happening on the world stage is showing us we need to come together right here and not rely on other countries or states to provide us with what we need to survive.” She continued,” I think so much about how lucky we are to live in a region where resources are abundant. At Pressmen’s Home, there is a lot of land available to use for growing food, and with proper funding, we could also get a commercial kitchen installed for local growers to have a place to prepare and store their products.” of the training, she will offer one-on-one and group consults to give guidance and support to people who are fully committing themselves to better wellness. In the future, B Well hopes to offer access to additional testing that is not typically offered in an annual physical visit with your doctor. Andrea said, “One of the most efficient ways to get your body into balance is not just access to healthy nutrition and supplementation but access to proper testing. I can’t stop dreaming of a laboratory (with a nonprofit sector for people who need financial assistance) where people have access to more comprehensive testing. So many standardized conventional tests don’t go deep enough to get a clear picture of what’s going on and some things that should be tested regularly aren’t. Things like microbiome/gut permeability, nutrient deficiencies, food allergies, stomach acid
Andrea would like to thank Adam Gelfand, CEO and Founder of Elemental Wizdom, and her friend Andrew Beath for helping her secure the loan to purchase the property for B Well. She would also like to thank Jodi James for creating the sign for the shop and Patryk Larney for the logo design. Andrea added, “I appreciate everyone who has helped with giving the almost 100-year-old building that will houses B Well the love and attention it deserves. I am also grateful for time spent working at the other natural health store and all the people I met and learned from there. Those months at 209 Depot St. helped me to understand more of what this community is needing and wanting, which in turn gave me the guts to open B Well.” continued to page 45

ohn P. McBride was well known as a Rogersville business man, owning a service station on West Main Street for almost 50 years. He cared for his customers, employees, and the community. He was true to his Christian faith in everything he did, and served the congregation at First Christian Church for decades. But what most will remember him for was kindness and care to all. Early Life John Doyle McBride was born in the Persia community of Hawkins County in 1936.His parents were John W. McBride and Mary Katherine Maddox McBride. He had two brothers and two sisters. He married Wilma Fleenor in 1958. Wilma remembers when she first met John; “He was a hotrodder before he settled down.” Their daughter Teresa remembers hearing “Papaw wouldn’t sign for him to get his first
car.” Wilma said that in high school John would go to Bulls Gap to school in the morning and then drive to Rogersville High in the afternoon. She added that he would bring lunch to some girls at Rogersville High. Wilma said that she double-dated in a group that included John but she “didn’t like him much.” One day John asked Wilma to a movie and they were together after that date.

John Doyle McBride was known his whole life as “John P.” Wilma said that soon after John was born, a neighbor, whose name started with the letter “P” expressed disappointment that the new baby wasn’t named after him. The family started calling the baby “John P” and that would stay with him the rest of his life. continued to page 48

Early Career In 1955 at nineteen years old, John P. worked for the first time at the station he would own one day. Harley Flora ran the station at the time. John P. earned $17.68 per week. He worked the station in two stints for a total of one and a half years. Wilma remembers that when she and John P. were first married he worked at Berkline and she worked for Worley Richardson. They stayed with Wilma’s sister Ann and her husband Bennie, then moved to an apartment above Taylor’s Funeral Home. Wilma said “He always enjoyed messing with cars.” The service station was something he wanted. The got his chance in December, 1960. The station came up for sale and Bennie and John P. bought it from Jimmy Greene. Originally the station was open 24 hours, 364 day per year (closed on Christmas Day). In 1963 John P. became the sole owner of West Main Shell.

A Lifetime of Service John P.’s reputation grew from his caring for his customers. Wilma recalls that sometimes during winter, he would work all night putting chains on tires or studs in tires. John went above and beyond to help everyone, but had a soft spot for older people, especially widows who didn’t have anyone to help them with their vehicles. Longtime employee Jackie Lipe said “Lots of older people were his customers, he took care of them. It wasn’t about selling gas and tires; if their lawn mower wouldn’t crank, he’d go fix it at no charge. Old school teachers traded with him. The older people like the full service, washing the windshield, checking under the hood, even though they didn’t drive very many miles. He pampered those who needed pampering.” Employee Eddie Manis remembers “The biggest thing I remember was that John was willing to help. He took good care of his customers and he was helpful to anybody and everybody. He had a big heart.” Teresa remembers that during the 1970s gas shortage, John P. would go to the station in the middle of the night to get gas to people who had to get to chemo or other medical treatments. In the days before credit cards were extensively used, John sold gas on credit to countless people who were going through medical problems or other hardships. Customer Donna Ball said “in 1985 our daughter was born premature, weighing two pounds and one ounce. We drove to Knoxville five or six times a week for two months while she was in UT Hospital. John P. let us charge gas and pay later. It helped us so much.”

John P. helped many people who had problems while passing through on the road. He gave away many tanks of gas so distressed travelers could get home. His compassion and generosity went beyond helping with car-related problems. Wilma said that she remembers one time when John P. let a traveler work at the station to earn money for a bus ticket. Other times he bought people bus tickets to get home. He often bought food for people from the Dixie Queen next door. continued to page 51

Employees Several young men spent time working at the West Main station (it was originally a Shell station, then Sunoco, and finally a Phillips 66). Eddie Manis worked for John P. from 1992-2001. He remembers “If you worked for John P., he always gave you guidance and wisdom.” Eddie recalls when John P. took one employee into his home and treated him as his own. Eddie said that two things he remembers about John P. were that “family came first” and that he was “a good Christian man.” Jackie Lipe was probably John P.’s longest tenured employee, working “8-9 years full time.” Jackie remembers that John P. was a sentimental, sensitive guy. He recalls when John would talk to those he was close to, he would “put a hand on your shoulder and call you honey. It would have a calming effect on you.”
When Jackie left for a job at TRW, he said “John P. was so nice, he said if he could pay me what they could and provide insurance he would.” He also told Jackie “If it don’t work out, you’ve got a job here.” In the time he worked at the station, Jackie said that John P. “never said a hateful word to me, he was so good to me, We had a special relationship.” In his early days of owning the station, it was open on Thanksgiving. Wilma said “He would bring those working home with him so they would have a Thanksgiving dinner.” She also recalls when he brought an employee home with him and the boy was reluctant to eat. The boy was so impressed with John P. that he said “I’m not good enough to sit at your table.” continued to page 52

John P.’s life truly reflected his Christian faith. He was a leader at First Christian Church in Rogersville. He was the spiritual leader of his family and they were faithful in their attendance. Like in the other parts of his life, John P. led by example. His personal faith was strong and his church family was important to him. John P. was always faithful, and Wilma remembers in the 1960s when he was suffering with psoriasis, he promised God “If you heal me, I’ll serve you the rest of my life.” Eddie Ward said “When I remember John, it is that he was a very humble man who never met a stranger. He truly lived the commandment to love God and love your neighbor as yourself. It was truly a blessing to have known and loved John P. continued to page 53

The Station Closes On June 12, 1998 West Main Phillips 66 closed for good. It was the last full service gas station in Rogersville. John P. had definitely earned his retirement. Wilma remembers that he was concerned about the widows and others who didn’t have anyone to take care of their cars. He opened a garage at his home and continued doing the work he had always done, with the exception of selling gas. continued to page 54

The Robbery During his time in business John P. was a few times the victim of crime. Wilma said that a few times there were a few thefts at the station. She remembers one time when they were on vacation someone actually removed a heavy cash register through a window. During the gas shortage in the 1970s he had threats made against him, as most station operators did. It was in the garage just a few feet from his home that the unthinkable happened. On June 8, 2010, two young men and a women came to John P.’s garage looking for used tires. He was going to give them some used tires but when he turned his back to them to get the tires the woman struck him in the back of the head with a piece of pipe. They then beat, kicked and robbed John P. and left him for dead. John P. recovered enough to try and drive himself to the hospital. His erratic driving was
noticed by police and he was taken the rest of the way to the hospital. The hallway of the hospital filled up with family, fellow church members and friends. John did survive the attack and the attackers were caught. John P. was not the same after that. Teresa said “After the beating, he didn’t have his peace anymore. The garage was where he went to be alone or to read his Bible, that couldn’t be the same. He thought that if he couldn’t defend himself, how could he take care of Wilma?” Wilma remembers in spite of his injuries he never complained. He prayed for God to forgive the attackers. continued to page 55 John P. at his garage near his home

Conclusion John P. survived his injuries. He had two hip surgeries in his last years. John Doyle McBride passed away in 2015. Wilma said “After he passed all those boys who worked for him came and tried to help me.” This hardworking, common man touched countless lives with caring and compassion for others. It would be hard to list all the people he helped, and even harder to name those who he influenced to be better human beings. John P. McBride will never be forgotten by those who were blessed by knowing him. Thank you, John P., for being the man you were.
