Celebrating the Impact of Military Entrepreneurs

Starting a business is no small feat For most entrepreneurs, it’s a journey full of challenges loneliness, financial strain, and the constant weight of risk. There are days when it feels like the odds are stacked against you.

One of my favorite quotes is by Zig Zigler, “There is no elevator to success, only stairs.”

Despite the fear, the uncertainty, and the sleepless nights, you keep moving forward. Why? Because you believe in what you’re building and you’re determined to make a difference And the truth is, without small business owners like you, our communities and our nation would look very different You create jobs, solve problems, and strengthen the economy in ways that often go unseen

For military entrepreneurs, this journey is even more profound. Veterans and military spouses bring unparalleled resilience and commitment to their work skills forged through years of service, sacrifice, and the pursuit of something greater than themselves. These are the very traits that make military entrepreneurs some of the most inspiring and impactful leaders in the business world today.

But here’s the thing: you are not alone.

At The Rosie Network, we believe in the power of community Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of standing alongside some of the most courageous and determined individuals veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs who have transformed their dreams into thriving businesses.

This year, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on 25 exceptional military entrepreneurs whose successes are not only changing their own lives but also uplifting their communities across the country.

Each of these 25 entrepreneurs has a unique story Some started their businesses to create financial stability for their families after transitioning from the military Others wanted to solve problems they encountered in their service, turning challenges into opportunities for innovation And many sought to create jobs for fellow veterans or military spouses, understanding firsthand the struggles of employment and reintegration. Regardless of their reasons, they all share one thing in common: they took a risk, and in doing so, they are making an impact that goes far beyond their bottom line.

From tech startups and consulting firms to art therapy practices and local cafes, these 25 entrepreneurs are driving real change in their communities

They’re creating jobs, providing services that matter, and showing us all that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and thriving in the military community

EO'S CORNER

What’s particularly inspiring is that these entrepreneurs don’t stop at business success they go further. Many have become mentors, reaching back to support other veterans and military spouses who are just starting their entrepreneurial journeys. They’ve built networks, shared resources, and provided guidance to ensure that others can find their paths to success Their willingness to give back is a testament to the enduring values of service and leadership that are at the core of the military experience

These 25 military entrepreneurs leaped They stared into the abyss and decided to build something beautiful, something meaningful. They are creating legacies, not just for themselves but also for their communities and future generations of military entrepreneurs. Their impact will be felt for years to come, and we are honored to share their stories with you.

We hope that as you read about their journeys, you’ll find inspiration in their resilience and courage Let their stories remind you that no matter where you are in your journey, you are not alone The road may be tough, but the rewards are immense

SPRING COHORT DEADLINE IS 11/30/24

"I walked into Service2CEO wide-eye and wet behind the ears not really knowing anything about starting my business. I felt so lost at first because my business was still in the idea phase. With the help of the Subject Matter Experts, the facilitator, and brainstorming/idea sharing with the other business partners in the cohort, I walked out of the class with a full up LLC and a clear idea of where to go forward. This was the first BIG steps in getting my consulting business going and I'm grateful for the opportunity Service2CEO gave!"

EMILY EMMONS Ho`ōla Veteran Services

From Personal Struggles to Community Triumphs: The Journey of Emily Emmons and Hoʻōla Farms

Emily Emmons' path to entrepreneurship was shaped by her personal life and professional endeavors. With a background in marketing, sales, and veteran advocacy, she witnessed the transformative effects of gardening on her husband John, a military veteran grappling with traumatic brain injury and PTSD. This personal revelation inspired the creation of Hoʻōla Farms, a project aimed at extending these therapeutic benefits to other veterans in need

"The idea for Hoʻōla Farms began with the Victory Gardens for Veterans program," Emmons recalls. "We started by delivering free garden beds and plant starts to veterans and their families The positive outcomes were undeniable, and we quickly saw the potential for broader impact."

This early success led to further developments, including the Growing Veterans program funded by the USDA's Enhancing Agricultural Opportunities for Military Veterans (AGVETS) Grant. Emmons and her team recognized the need for more agribusiness opportunities and expanded their efforts to include the Groundwork to Grow program and the Hawai’i Farm-to-Car initiative.

Influences and Mentorship

Emmons' entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by several key mentors. Senator Elizabeth Dole, founder of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, has been a significant influence "Senator Dole taught me the importance of valuing every story and the power of a collective voice," Emmons says. "Her leadership and empathy have been a guiding light in my work with veterans "

Dr. Jamie Muskopf from The Rosie Network also played a crucial role in Emmons' professional growth "Dr Muskopf has been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of nonprofit work and has provided invaluable guidance throughout my journey."

Mission and Milestones

The core mission of Hoʻōla Farms is to strengthen the local food system through education, commercial kitchen access, and an online farmers market This vision has been realized through various programs aimed at supporting local farmers and veterans alike. Emmons is particularly proud of the 2023 Impact Report, which highlights nearly a decade of work and celebrates the collective achievements of her team and volunteers

"Our 2023 Impact Report is a testament to the incredible work we’ve done," Emmons shares. "It captures not just the progress of the past year but the culmination of nearly ten years of dedication and growth "

Overcoming Challenges and Defining Success

Starting a business is never without its challenges, and Emmons faced her share. As a woman-owned Executive Director, securing funding on par with male-run organizations proved difficult. Emmons overcame this challenge by focusing on federal grants and seeking support from foundations and corporations

For Emmons, success is defined by the ability to support local farmers and create a more resilient food system. Looking ahead, she aims to expand the reach of Hoʻōla Farms to other islands, military bases, and Veteran Administration locations across the country. "Our vision is to continue growing and making a lasting impact," she says.

Lessons and Legacy

Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, Emmons has learned the value of focused dedication.

"Identifying where you can make the most significant impact and committing to that focus is crucial," she advises. "Opportunities will always arise, but spreading yourself too thin can dilute your efforts."

Emmons remains motivated by the mission of Hoʻōla Farms and the positive changes it brings to veterans and the community. She embraces setbacks as learning opportunities and celebrates small victories along the way Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is straightforward: "Nothing happens overnight. Every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow."

Looking Forward

As Emmons reflects on her journey, she remains grateful for every challenge and opportunity. "I'm thankful for every step along the way," she says. "These experiences have allowed me to grow personally and professionally in ways I could never have imagined."

Through her work with Hoʻōla Farms, Emily Emmons hopes to leave a lasting legacy of sustainability and community empowerment. "We are the ones we’ve been waiting for," she asserts. "The impossible is possible through gratitude."

Emmons acknowledges the vital role of her family and team in making her vision a reality. "Never doubt a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world," she quotes, nodding to Margaret Mead’s famous words "It’s true now more than ever."

TROY SMALL Copperwater Consulting, Inc.

From Combat to Consulting: Troy Small's Path to Entrepreneurial Success

In the bustling city of Murrieta, California, Troy Small is making waves with his business, Copperwater Consulting, Inc. Small's journey from a combat zone in the Persian Gulf to the boardrooms of consulting and business strategy is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and an unyielding commitment to service

A Legacy of Service and Transition

Troy Small's story begins in July 1989 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Heavy Machine Gunner. His service in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm marked the beginning of a distinguished military career. After experiencing a significant shift in his role due to troop reductions, Small transitioned to a new Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) in Supply Administration, and later, Purchasing and Contracting Specialist. This change not only defined his career but also set the stage for his future entrepreneurial endeavors

"I always knew I wanted to own my own business," Small reflects. "The question was when and how. My entrepreneurial journey truly began in January 2017 when I founded Copperwater Consulting, Inc , while still working as a civilian employee with the Navy in San Diego."

The Catalyst for Change

“The drive to start Copperwater Consulting was ignited by personal hardships. Long commutes and the toll of sitting at a desk exacerbated Small's military disabilities and PTSD symptoms. After several near-miss freeway accidents and mounting stress, Small made a pivotal decision in 2016 to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. The commute and stress were impacting my quality of life," Small explains "I decided it was time to take a chance on my business idea I started Copperwater Consulting as a professional hobby until I could transition fully from my Navy career."

Self-Reliance and Innovation

“Small's journey was marked by a lack of traditional mentorship. Instead, he drew inspiration from consultants he knew personally and those he followed on YouTube "I didn't have a mentor specifically guiding me," he says. "I wanted to create a blueprint for others in similar circumstances, to show that success is achievable. I believe in trusting myself and my own ideas "

Copperwater Consulting's mission is clear: to assist veteran-owned and small businesses in achieving efficiency and compliance while advancing in government contracting and grants Small's goal is to help others realize their business ownership dreams and achieve self-sufficiency.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the most significant challenges Small faced was managing cash flow during the early stages of his business "There were times when all my accounts were empty, and I was behind on my mortgage," he recalls "To overcome this, I sought other opportunities and took on a role as a Government Contracting Business Consultant with Skyway Acquisition, LLC."

This role not only provided financial stability but also led to Small's current position as VP of Sales and a member of Skyway Acquisition's leadership team.

Milestones and Success

A standout achievement for Small was winning a fiveyear service contract with Riverside County in 2022 to provide Business Consultant Services for the Coachella Valley Small Business Development Center (SBDC) "This contract allowed me to mentor and train small business owners across a broad region," Small proudly states. "From Orange County to the Coachella Valley, I help clients with business formation, compliance, planning, and expanding into government contracting."

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Small advises new entrepreneurs to thoroughly understand and execute the formal steps of starting a business, including entity types, licenses, and tax implications. "Proper compliance from the start prevents future distractions and complications," he says

Lessons and Resilience

The most important lesson Small has learned is to rely on his own judgment and creativity "Betting on myself has been the key to my success," he says "While outside advice can be helpful, pursuing and achieving your own ideas is what truly matters."

Small views setbacks as opportunities for learning rather than losses "I see 'L's as Learns," he explains "Every setback is a chance to gain valuable insights that improve my effectiveness as an entrepreneur."

Defining Success

For Small, success is measured by cash flow and goal achievement. "Cash flow is crucial for covering basic operations," he explains "I focus on setting and achieving specific goals to ensure growth and profitability. Being laser-focused and intentional about my work increases my productivity and success."

Reflections and Legacy

Looking back, Small wishes he had better understood the differences between S-Corporations and CCorporations. "I initially incorporated as a CCorporation, which caused issues with accessing funds," he recalls. "I later corrected this to an SCorporation, but it would have been better to start with the right entity from the beginning."

Small's desired legacy through his business is one of service, connection, and empowerment. "I want to provide lasting resources that help individuals connect with opportunities, enrich their families, and empower their communities "

Troy Small's journey from military service to entrepreneurship is a powerful example of dedication and transformation His focus on health, continuous learning, and self-reliance highlights the core principles that have driven his success.

DAWN BRYANT Dawn The Tour Guide

Dawn Bryant: Bringing History to Life with Dawn The Tour Guide

In the heart of Alexandria, Virginia, Dawn Bryant, founder of Dawn The Tour Guide, is transforming how military families experience the rich history of Washington D.C. After spending years as a military spouse, educator, and passionate traveler, Dawn turned her love for people and history into a thriving tour guide business that offers a personalized, intimate experience of the nation’s capital.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Dawn’s entrepreneurial journey didn’t start in a typical office. Before becoming a certified professional tour guide, she spent years in Municipal Recreation, the non-profit sector, and as a homeschool mom while accompanying her Active Duty Army Officer husband on assignments.

“I had the opportunity to travel and take tours, and I began imagining myself as the one leading those tours,” Dawn reflects. When her son began college, she took a leap and pursued certification in professional tour guiding, setting the stage for what would become Dawn The Tour Guide

From Pandemic Setback to Entrepreneurial Success

The inspiration behind Dawn The Tour Guide came during the COVID-19 pandemic As the world shut down, military families continued to move into the National Capital Region.

With limited opportunities for entertainment, Dawn recognized a unique need. “I had planned to work as a contractor for other tour operators, but with all my 2020 tours canceled, I pivoted. Dawn The Tour Guide became a go-to resource for military-affiliated people looking to safely explore D.C. in small, masked groups,” she explains. By offering private tours during a time of uncertainty, Dawn built a business that thrived despite the pandemic’s challenges

A Community That Supports

The road to success wasn’t traveled alone. Dawn credits much of her early success to the mentorship and support she received from The Rosie Network and its’ Service2CEO Training and Mentorship Program. “I wouldn’t have come this far without them. I’ve been surrounded by support since day one, both from the tour guide community and the military spouse community,” she says. This support system has played a pivotal role in growing her business into a trusted resource for military families

A Mission Rooted in Connection

At its core, Dawn The Tour Guide is about more than just tours. Dawn’s mission is to empower military families to make the most of their Washington D C assignments and embrace the full experience of living near the nation’s capital Her tours range from private orientation tours for newly arriving families to specialized trips for groups like Navy Federal staff or Air Force spouses. “I’m so proud that Dawn The Tour Guide has directly served thousands of military-affiliated individuals, often creating connections between strangers who leave as friends.”

Defining Success Through Relationships

For Dawn, success isn’t defined by numbers but by the relationships she builds. “As a military spouse, I’m part of one of the most supportive communities on the planet The military spouse community has embraced me, supports me, and recommends me Relationships are at the core of every decision I make.”

Her business philosophy revolves around this sense of connection. “You have to care. This industry is more about investing in relationships than generating wealth. It’s about offering experiences that truly matter to people ”

Lessons in Resilience

Running a business during a pandemic has taught Dawn invaluable lessons. “I started a business based on bringing people together in a time when isolation was necessary, and it still flourished,” she shares. This resilience stems from her deep passion for her work. “Motivation comes naturally when you love what you do My guests inspire me to keep moving forward, even when I’m tired or discouraged.”

A Day in the Life of Dawn The Tour Guide

Each day as an entrepreneur is different for Dawn, but they’re always busy and full of learning. “I often work 14-hour days in very ‘peoplely’ environments,” she laughs “I’m constantly booking new work, learning new things on the fly, and adapting to the needs of my guests. No two days are ever the same.”

Looking Ahead

Dawn’s ultimate goal is to make the nation’s history more accessible and interesting to the people she serves. With her unique blend of passion, dedication, and community support, Dawn The Tour Guide is not just a business it’s a bridge connecting military families with their new home, while making history come alive in unforgettable ways.

Caisson Shaving Co. TRAVIS ARNOLD

FROM SERVICE TO SHAVING: TRAVIS ARNOLD’S JOURNEY TO CREATING CAISSON SHAVING CO

In the arid landscapes of Arizona, a new kind of business is making waves one that blends the discipline of military service with the craft of grooming. Caisson Shaving Co, founded by Travis Arnold, is not just about high-quality shaving products; it’s a testament to Arnold’s multifaceted career and his commitment to serving others in a new way.

A Background in Service and Leadership

Travis Arnold’s path to entrepreneurship is as diverse as it is distinguished With over a decade of service as a Patrol Sergeant with the Sheriff's Office and 12 years in the United States Army, Arnold’s career has been characterized by leadership, integrity, and dedication His subsequent role in the Defense Industry as a Technical Sales Manager and Systems Engineer further honed his skills in business operations and sales strategies.

"The skills and experiences I accumulated in law enforcement and the military provided a strong foundation for my entrepreneurial journey," Arnold explains. "These roles taught me leadership, discipline, and the importance of creating a positive environment lessons that have been crucial in building Caisson Shaving Co."

The Birth of an Idea

The genesis of Caisson Shaving Co is rooted in a period of reflection during the COVID-19 pandemic. As many were reevaluating their routines, Arnold’s own experiences with the discomfort of daily shaving resurfaced. He saw an opportunity to transform a routine task into a more enjoyable experience.

"My background in sales and my personal frustration with shaving led me to realize there was a gap in the market for high-quality, comfortable shaving products," Arnold says. "Working from home gave me the flexibility to explore this idea further and turn it into a reality."

The vision was clear: to create a brand that offers luxurious and efficient shaving solutions. This idea quickly took shape, fueled by Arnold’s passion for innovation and his commitment to improving the daily routines of his customers

Guidance from the Best

Arnold credits much of his success to the mentorship and support he received from Warrior Rising, a non-profit dedicated to helping veterans transition to entrepreneurship. "Warrior Rising provided invaluable resources, education, and mentorship," Arnold shares "Their programs, like Warrior Academy and Warrior University, helped me translate my military skills into effective business strategies."

This support was pivotal in navigating the complexities of starting a new business and has been a cornerstone of Caisson Shaving Co’s success.

Mission and Milestones

Caisson Shaving Co’s core mission is to deliver highquality shaving products that cater specifically to the needs of military personnel. Arnold’s own military background provides a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by service members, making this mission personal and impactful. A significant milestone for the company was securing contracts with the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) and the Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM). "Being available at 76 military bases around the world is a huge achievement," Arnold says. "It validates our efforts and allows us to support soldiers globally with topnotch shaving solutions."

Navigating Challenges

Starting a business during the COVID-19 pandemic presented unique challenges, including disruptions in supply chains and changes in marketing effectiveness. Arnold adapted by embracing digital marketing strategies and leveraging his sales experience to streamline operations "The pandemic forced us to innovate and adapt quickly," Arnold explains. "By focusing on digital strategies and efficient scaling, we were able to overcome these obstacles and grow our business."

Lessons and Legacy

One of the most crucial lessons Arnold has learned is to be wary of those offering expensive business coaching services. "Find mentors who are genuinely invested in your success," he advises. "Too often, costly services promise growth but deliver little value Authentic mentorship is far more beneficial "

Arnold’s resilience is rooted in the discipline learned during his military service. "Staying focused and maintaining a positive mindset, even in tough situations, is crucial," he says. "The support from my team and the sense of purpose in our mission keep me motivated."

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those looking to start a business, Arnold recommends embracing rapid testing and adaptability. "Fail fast and pivot quickly," he advises. "Launching a minimum viable product and gathering real-world feedback is essential. Listen to your customers and be willing to adapt based on their needs."

Final Thoughts

Arnold’s journey from military service to entrepreneurship reflects a commitment to excellence and a dedication to improving the lives of those he serves With Caisson Shaving Co, he has successfully merged his experiences and values into a thriving business, impacting the grooming routines of service members worldwide.

KEYANI WASHINGTON CHAT Skin & Hair Co

Keyani Washington: From Cosmetologist to Skincare Entrepreneur with CHAT Skin & Hair Co

Keyani Washington, a Licensed Cosmetologist based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is the founder of CHAT Skin & Hair Co. With a passion for beauty and wellness that spans decades, Keyani has transformed her love for cosmetology into a thriving business dedicated to advancing skin and hair wellness Her journey from a part-time cosmetologist to a full-time entrepreneur is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and dedication to helping others.

Discovering Her Entrepreneurial Spirit

Keyani’s journey into entrepreneurship began long before she even knew what the term meant. She became a Licensed Cosmetologist in 2005, balancing her work in the salon with a part-time job as a childcare provider. However, it wasn’t until 2011 that she took the leap to focus solely on her work in the salon. “I didn’t know I was an entrepreneur; I had never heard the word before,” Keyani recalls It wasn’t until 2018, after completing an Entrepreneur Bootcamp for Veterans, that she fully realized she was a natural-born entrepreneur.

The Birth of CHAT Skin & Hair Co

The inspiration for CHAT Skin & Hair Co was born out of necessity and a desire to continue working in the cosmetology industry despite the physical demands of the job “The business I have now was birthed out of a need to do something different besides standing on my feet all day, which was aggravating an injury I sustained in the military,”

Keyani explains When one of her favorite hair products was discontinued, she took matters into her own hands and formulated her own. This pivotal moment set off a domino effect that ultimately led to the creation of her business.

Influences and Mentorship

Keyani’s love for the beauty industry was instilled in her from a young age by her mother and two childhood hairstylists. Her mother taught her how to braid when she was just 12 years old, and Keyani spent countless hours observing her hairstylists, practicing what she saw them do. These early influences set her on a path that would eventually lead to the creation of CHAT Skin & Hair Co

The Mission Behind CHAT Skin & Hair Co

CHAT Skin & Hair Co was founded with a clear mission: to address the critical need for high-quality resources in the skin and hair wellness industry “Consumers are increasingly facing hair health issues due to a lack of access to high-quality resources,” Keyani notes. Her company is dedicated to providing comprehensive solutions, expert guidance, and top-notch products to help individuals achieve and maintain healthy hair and skin.

Overcoming Challenges on the Entrepreneurial Path

Like many entrepreneurs, Keyani faced significant challenges when starting her business. “I really didn’t know what to do, where to start, what I needed, or who I needed,” she admits The key to overcoming these obstacles was utilizing available resources, such as Veteran Entrepreneur organizations, the SBA, and The Small Business Development Center. Through research and a deep dive into the cosmetology industry, Keyani gained a better understanding of the education, products, and services that would form the foundation of her business.

A Journey Marked by Milestones

For Keyani, one of her biggest successes has been learning to navigate obstacles without being defeated. “Entrepreneurship is not a cakewalk. Most of the time, you’re silently walking it alone,” she says Despite the challenges, she has persevered, steadily growing her business and serving others. This resilience is a testament to her commitment to her craft and her unwavering belief in the purpose of her work

Redefining Success

Keyani’s definition of success has evolved over time. While she once focused on business revenue, she now measures success by completing her weekly or monthly tasks, making the right connections, and continuing to move forward despite challenges. “Success is continuing to keep going because there’s a purpose for my life, my business, and that purpose is meant to help someone else’s life or business,” she explains.

Lessons Learned and Staying Resilient

One of the most important lessons Keyani has learned on her entrepreneurial journey is the difference between working in her business and working on her business

Until she can afford to hire additional help, she is responsible for everything from providing services to answering emails and phone calls. “It’s a lot, but one day it will all change,” she says with optimism

In the face of setbacks or failures, Keyani stays motivated by reminding herself of her purpose. “I cry my tears, vent, pray for strength, and depend on God to keep me going,” she shares Her early slogans, “Put on Your Freaking Shoes and Walk” and “Do it Anyway,” continue to inspire her to push through challenges, knowing that every problem has a solution and that setbacks are just part of the process

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those looking to start a business in the cosmetology industry, Keyani offers sage advice: “Don’t get into the industry for the money because some days you won’t make any. If you don’t want to continue to learn, this probably isn’t the right industry for you ” She emphasizes the importance of being teachable, serving others, and staying focused to grow and succeed.

Reflections and the Legacy of CHAT Skin & Hair Co

Looking back, Keyani acknowledges that she might have invested differently in certain areas of her business. However, she views these experiences as valuable learning opportunities that have shaped her entrepreneurial journey.

Keyani’s vision for the future of CHAT Skin & Hair Co is ambitious and inspiring. She hopes to build her company into the leading authority in skin and hair wellness, empowering individuals to achieve and maintain healthy hair through a holistic approach that combines innovation, education, and personalized care.

JEN AMOS Holding Down The Fort Podcast

Empowering Military Transitions: The Journey of Je

In the heart of Hampton Roads, Virginia, Jen Amos, a dynamic entrepreneur and military spouse, has carved a unique niche with her podcast, “Holding Down the Fort.” Raised in a Navy household, Jen’s journey to entrepreneurship was marked by resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to serving the military community. Today, she shares her story of how she built a thriving podcast dedicated to helping military families navigate their transition to civilian life

From Military Kid to Entrepreneur

Jen’s upbringing in a military family exposed her to a lifestyle that was mobile, fluid, and adaptive These qualities became second nature to her, and when she entered the workforce, she quickly realized that traditional jobs didn’t align with her upbringing. After being let go from four consecutive jobs, Jen had a moment of clarity that set her on the path to entrepreneurship.

“I realized that I needed to create a living that supported the lifestyle I was comfortable with,” Jen recalls “I could either invest time in updating my resume and finding another job, or I could reinvest that time and energy into building something meaningful. I chose the latter, and I haven’t looked back since ”

A Mission to Serve

The core mission behind “Holding Down the Fort” is simple yet powerful: to provide military families with the peace of mind and support they need during the often challenging transition from military to civilian life Jen understands that this transition is more than just a logistical shift it’s a complete lifestyle change that affects every aspect of a person’s life. “Our goal is to alleviate the stress that often accompanies this transition, allowing our listeners to focus on the other important aspects of their life change,” Jen explains. “Through our podcast, we share motivational stories of personal growth, financial awareness, and autonomy within our military community We believe that by providing these insights, we can help our listeners transition smoothly and successfully into their postmilitary life.”

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Milestones

Starting a podcast and building an audience is never easy, and Jen faced her fair share of challenges along the way One of the biggest hurdles was maintaining the initial enthusiasm and excitement as the daily grind set in. However, Jen found motivation in the simple, consistent actions that build up over time

“The key to overcoming this challenge was finding joy and purpose in the simple daily disciplines,” she says. “Success isn’t about the big, dramatic moments, but rather the small, consistent actions that build up over time.”

One major milestone that Jen is particularly proud of is the growth of “Holding Down the Fort.” Launched in 2019, the podcast has now reached over 200 episodes, connecting with the military community on a deeper level and providing invaluable insights and support

Defining Success and Building a Legacy

For Jen, success is not a destination but a lifestyle. “It’s about making successful decisions every moment of every day,” she says. “It’s about finding purpose in the present, joy in the journey, and blessings as I build.”

Through “Holding Down the Fort,” Jen hopes to change the narrative around military retirement and transition. She wants the podcast to be remembered for equipping military families with the emotional and practical support they need to confidently step into the next chapter of their lives. Additionally, she hopes that the podcast will inspire others in the military community to think outside the box and manifest their dreams

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Jen’s entrepreneurial journey has been a process of continuous learning and adaptation. Her advice to others looking to start a podcast or a business is clear and insightful:

1. Embrace the Journey: Entrepreneurship is a lifestyle, not a destination. Find joy and purpose in the present.

2. Stay Humble and Hungry: Always be a student, open-minded, and committed to personal growth.

3. Understand Your Audience: Get to know your audience intimately, especially if you serve a niche market.

4. Find Your Unique Value Proposition: Know what sets your podcast or business apart and focus on that.

5. Stay Resilient: Setbacks and failures are part of the journey. Reframe perceived failures as feedback.

6. Keep Learning: Continuous education is key to staying motivated and growing your podcast or business.

A Legacy of Empowerment and Transformation

Looking back, Jen is grateful for every step of her journey, even the difficult ones. She believes that every challenge has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and become a better person As she continues to build her podcast and serve the military community, Jen’s focus remains on creating a lasting impact.

“The legacy I hope to leave through ‘Holding Down the Fort’ is one of empowerment and transformation,” she says. “I want the podcast to be remembered for equipping military families with the support and reassurance they need to confidently step into the next chapter of their lives.”

In sharing her story, Jen Amos offers inspiration and insight to anyone looking to take the leap into entrepreneurship. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and the unwavering belief that success is within reach for those willing to pursue it with passion and purpose.

Cyle’s path to entrepreneurship began during his college years, where he minored in entrepreneurship, sparking his interest in starting his own business However, his journey took him through almost five years as an officer in the Army before transitioning to the corporate world. It was during his time working for a Fortune 500 company that the idea to start his own business became more than just a distant dream.

“I was sitting at my desk working at another company and felt like God said, ‘It was time,’” Cyle recalls That pivotal moment led him to discuss his decision with his wife, and within a week, he informed his employer of his departure. This leap of faith marked the beginning of Transcend Translation

The Mission of Transcend Translation

At the heart of Transcend Translation is a simple yet powerful mission: to positively impact the lives of the company’s partners and employees This mission drives every decision Cyle makes, from the way he builds his team to the relationships he fosters with clients. For Cyle, success is about more than just financial growth; it’s about creating a company culture where people thrive both professionally and personally.

Overcoming Doubt and Achieving Milestones

Like many entrepreneurs, Cyle faced significant challenges in the early stages of his business, with doubt being one of the biggest obstacles. “Wondering if what I was doing was a waste of time and money,” he admits Despite these doubts, Cyle remained committed to his vision, focusing on finding new clients and preparing his company for growth.

His perseverance paid off. In 2023, Transcend Translation achieved over $1 million in revenue in less than two years a milestone Cyle had initially projected would take until 2025 However, beyond the financial success, Cyle takes the greatest pride in the team he has built. “Our customers love them, and I have full trust in them,” he says.

Defining Success and Building a Positive Culture

For Cyle, success is multifaceted. It’s about building an amazing company culture where employees feel valued, challenged, and supported. He believes that success involves creating a work environment where people want to be, driven by the respect and relationships they have with their co-workers. Moreover, Cyle emphasizes the importance of worklife balance, ensuring that his team has the time to spend with their families the very reason they work hard in the first place.

Lessons Learned on the Entrepreneurial Journey

One of the most important lessons Cyle has learned is the power of belief both in oneself and in one’s team. “Believe in yourself and your team! That belief, combined with execution, will make great things happen,” he advises This mindset has been instrumental in helping Cyle stay motivated and resilient, even in the face of setbacks.

Cyle also emphasizes the importance of being smart with finances He warns against the temptation to overspend on marketing or production, advocating instead for setting small budgets and sticking to them. “You can go a long way without spending a lot,” he notes.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, Cyle expresses gratitude for the experiences and lessons he has gained along the way “It has been and still is an amazing ride that I am so grateful for,” he says, without any regrets.

A Day in the Life of an Entrepreneur

Cyle’s daily routine is a reflection of his commitment to both his business and his personal values His day begins with prayer, followed by a workout, breakfast, and writing in his gratitude journal. The rest of the day is filled with emails, team meetings, client interactions, and strategic planning However, when the workday ends, Cyle makes it a priority to focus on his family, ensuring that he maintains a healthy work-life balance.

The Best Advice: Embrace Imperfection

One piece of advice that has greatly impacted Cyle is the idea that “perfection is the enemy of done.” As someone who values excellence, Cyle has learned that it’s important to start somewhere, even if things aren’t perfect “You can always refine and make it better, and you should do that But you need to have something,” he says.

Leaving a Legacy

Through Transcend Translation, Cyle hopes to leave a lasting legacy of positive impact. He wants his business to continue improving the lives of both partners and employees, fostering a culture of respect, growth, and support

Cyle Adair’s story is one of faith, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive impact. Through Transcend Translation, he is not only achieving remarkable business success but also building a legacy that will continue to benefit others for years to come.

SCOTT TUCKER US VetWealth

Navigating Financial Freedom After Military Service: Scott Tucker and US VetWealth

Navigating Financial Freedom After Military Service: The Journey of Scott Tucker and US VetWealth

From Military Service to Entrepreneurial Success: How Scott Tucker is Helping Veterans Secure Their Financial Futures

Scott Tucker’s journey from military service to entrepreneurship is nothing short of inspiring. After graduating from West Point in the wake of 9/11, Tucker embarked on a path many would consider noble and courageous However, it wasn’t until he faced the realities of post-military life that he discovered his true calling: helping other military veterans secure their financial futures. Today, as the founder of US VetWealth, based in Hampton Roads, VA, Tucker is redefining what it means to build wealth and financial security after a military career.

Background:

Tucker’s entry into the military was driven by a strong sense of duty, but like many service members, he hadn’t given much thought to life after the uniform. His experience in the military was marked by a high operational tempo and a focus on immediate goals. However, as his service commitment drew to a close,

Tucker found himself at a crossroads. “I saw myself as more of an innovator,” Tucker explains. “The military structure didn’t quite fit with my need to create and explore new frontiers.” This realization came at a time when the internet was beginning to open up new opportunities for those willing to take risks

The Catalyst for Change:

Tucker’s journey into entrepreneurship began in earnest after he left the military and entered the financial services industry However, the traditional approach to financial planning left him feeling unsatisfied. A pivotal experience with a client a retired military officer who wanted to protect his assets without taking risks in the stock market became the catalyst for Tucker’s business

“I introduced him to an insurance-based solution that allowed him to protect his assets without exposing them to market volatility,” Tucker recalls. This unconventional approach sparked shock among the client’s colleagues, leading to the end of their working relationship. But for Tucker, it was a wake-up call that revealed a fundamental flaw in the financial services industry: the focus was often on following standardized practices rather than truly understanding and meeting the unique needs of each client.

This experience inspired Tucker to create a different approach to wealth management one that empowers clients to use their money to live the life they want, without the fear of market volatility. Thus, the War Chest Strategy was born, offering a safe and stable way to protect and grow wealth while providing flexibility for clients to pursue their passions.

Influences and Mentorship:

Tucker credits much of his entrepreneurial mindset to the influence of Tim Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week. Ferriss’ ideas on personal branding, location-independent work, and mini-retirements resonated deeply with Tucker “Ferriss opened my eyes to the possibilities of entrepreneurship and a more mobile, location-independent lifestyle,” he says. This shift in mindset allowed Tucker to explore alternative approaches to business and life, ultimately leading him to the success he enjoys today.

Mission and Vision:

At the heart of US VetWealth is a mission to empower military retirees and their families to take control of their financial futures. The core idea behind the business is to introduce clients to the concept of insuring the wealth they’ve already earned, reducing financial stress, and offering more control over their money. “Too often, conventional retirement planning doesn’t resonate with military members who are used to a more dynamic, purpose-driven lifestyle,” Tucker notes By focusing on insurance-based solutions with tax advantages and accessibility, US VetWealth helps clients navigate the transition from military service with confidence and peace of mind.

Challenges and Successes:

Like any entrepreneur, Tucker faced challenges in his journey. One of the biggest hurdles was breaking free from the sense of loyalty to his first post-military job

“It took me too long to give myself permission to explore what else was out there,” he admits However, once he embraced the entrepreneurial mindset, there was no looking back.

One of Tucker’s proudest moments came with the publication of his book, Don’t Forget Your War Chest. The book has resonated with many military veterans, providing them with the clarity and confidence to take control of their financial futures. “Even if it doesn’t immediately lead to a business relationship, knowing that I’ve made a meaningful impact is incredibly rewarding,” Tucker shares.

Defining Success:

For Tucker, success is not just about growing his business it’s about building quality relationships with clients. “The true measure of success is when both sides are clear that it’s a good fit,” he says. By educating clients upfront and attracting those who genuinely align with his mission, Tucker ensures that US VetWealth adds real value, not just transactions.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs:

For those looking to enter the financial services industry, Tucker offers this advice: “Take the time to understand what you’re trying to achieve, beyond just making money. The industry can be very prescriptive, but if your true motivation is to help people in a meaningful way, you need to explore alternative approaches.”

Looking Ahead:

As Tucker continues to grow US VetWealth, his legacy is clear: he wants to be a trusted resource for senior military leaders as they navigate their financial futures. By providing education, protection, and flexibility, Tucker aims to remove the financial stresses and uncertainties that often accompany the transition out of military service. His goal is to help clients find fulfillment and success on their own terms, leaving a lasting impact that goes beyond the bottom line

APRIL MITCHELL 4A's Creations, LLC

April Mitchell: Innovator, Educator, and Entrep LLC

April Mitchell, a Cedar Point, NC-based entrepreneur and founder of 4A’s Creations, LLC, has turned her passion for problem-solving and creativity into a successful business. With a background in education and a family history of innovation, April has made her mark in the housewares, toy, and game industries, licensing her inventive products to manufacturers and bringing joy to countless lives.

From Education to Innovation

April’s journey into entrepreneurship began with her natural inclination to solve problems. Coming from a long line of innovators, she was always looking for ways to make life easier and more enjoyable. Her first inventions were in the housewares industry, where she successfully licensed her ideas to manufacturers. This initial success inspired her to explore other industries, particularly the toy and game industry

“I made games and learning resources for my students when I was a teacher, as well as learning games for my own kids,” April recalls “I thought I’d have a go at designing and licensing games and toys.” This decision proved fruitful, as April has since licensed products across several industries, with a particular focus on games Her family has played an integral role in her business, contributing to various aspects of product development, from drawing and prototyping to playtesting and tech support.

The Spark of Inspiration

The inspiration for 4A’s Creations, LLC, stemmed from a personal problem that April couldn’t find a solution for in the market. Recognizing that she wasn’t alone in facing this challenge, she decided to create a product that would not only help her family but others as well. This drive to solve problems and make life better for others is at the heart of her business.

Influences and Mentorship

When April first began her entrepreneurial journey, she found guidance in Stephen Key, author of One Simple Idea. His book, YouTube channel, and mentorship program provided April with the tools she needed to navigate the complexities of licensing products. Later, as she ventured into the toy and game industry, she received invaluable mentorship from Ed Gartin, who worked in product development and inventor relations

However, April’s greatest supporters have always been her family. “My family has been and remains my biggest cheerleaders they encourage me and support me in so many ways, and I couldn’t be here without them,” she shares.

The Mission of 4A’s Creations, LLC

The core mission of 4A’s Creations, LLC is to bring joy to others by inventing and designing products that are fun, bring people together, or solve everyday problems. April is driven by a desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives, whether it’s through a playful game, a practical solution, or a product that brings families closer.

Overcoming Challenges and Personal Growth

One of the biggest challenges April faced in starting her business was learning to believe in herself and her abilities. “I had to work on my personal growth and development to become successful in product development,” she admits. This journey of selfdiscovery took time, especially as she battled with depression. However, as April focused on her personal growth, her confidence grew, and so did her business.

Celebrating Milestones

A significant milestone in April’s career is the launch of her product, Lazer Balloons by Best Party Ever. The idea to create a light show inside a balloon, with color images projecting from within, was a unique concept that required extensive collaboration with engineers to bring to life. After years of development, Lazer Balloons are now on the market, marking a proud achievement for April and her team

Redefining Success

For April, success is no longer just about financial gain “Success is all about learning, growing, and moving forward in the right direction,” she explains. Reflecting on how far she has come, April feels blessed by the support she has received and the opportunity to help others on their journeys

Creating a ripple effect of success is a joy she cherishes.

Valuable Lessons and Resilience

Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, April has learned the importance of opening herself up to learning from others She believes that everyone has something to offer and that embracing this mindset can lead to great achievements and the ability to help others.

Resilience in the face of setbacks comes from April’s strong faith and belief that everything happens for a reason. “I stay motivated and resilient because I believe if I work hard and things are meant to be and align, they will,” she says.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Reflecting on her journey, April notes that she would have been more cautious about spending money on patents “When I first started, I thought I needed a patent for everything,” she says Over time, she learned to discern when to invest in a patent and when it wasn’t necessary. Despite this, she is proud to hold three patents and views them as milestones in her career

Leaving a Legacy

April hopes to leave a dual legacy through her business First, she wants to inspire others, especially her family, to embrace fun and creativity and follow their dreams. Second, she aims to provide financial freedom for her family, ensuring that her inventions and designs continue to support them long after she is gone

April Mitchell’s journey from educator to entrepreneur is a testament to the power of creativity, resilience, and the support of loved ones Through 4A’s Creations, LLC, she is leaving a lasting impact on the world, one inventive product at a time.

AMILIES THROUGH REAL ESTATE: NEY WITH THE PFEIFER TEAM

In the vi Beaufort, SC, Ayren Pfeifer is doing more than just closing deals she’s transforming the lives of military families. As the founder of The Pfeifer Team, Ayren has built a successful real estate business that’s grounded in a mission to help military families grow wealth through homeownership

From Military Spouse to Real Estate Entrepreneur Ayren’s journey into real estate began in 2008, thanks to the MyCAA program, which enabled her to obtain her Realtor’s license But the seed of entrepreneurship was planted a couple of years earlier. “When I saw a friend running a successful real estate brokerage on her own around 2006, I knew it was something I too could do,” Ayren recalls This realization was the spark that set her on a path toward establishing her own business.

As a military spouse, Ayren understood the unique challenges faced by military families, especially when it came to the complexities of buying and selling homes. Inspired by her friend’s success and later guided by her first broker in Virginia, Ayren dove into the real estate market with a clear goal: to make a positive impact on the lives of those who serve our country.

Building Trust in a Competitive Market

Starting a business in real estate is no small feat, especially in a market dominated by established agents. “Getting people to trust me as a new Realtor was a tremendous challenge,” Ayren admits. To overcome this hurdle, she adopted a strategy that mimicked USAA’s bonus-at-closing program. “For the first few years of my business, every time a family closed on their home, I gave them a cash bonus,” she explains. This thoughtful gesture not only helped build trust but also set Ayren apart in a tight-knit market

Her efforts quickly paid off. Within her first few years in real estate, Ayren was ranked as one of the top 50 agents in her market an achievement that validated her approach and solidified her reputation as a trusted professional. “This was particularly important to me because the market I worked in was tight-knit, and most agents were very established,” she notes

Defining Success and Staying Resilient

For Ayren, success is about more than just financial gain “For myself, success is the ability to contribute to a better quality of life for my family. For my business, it means consistently closing homes and consistently having happy clients,” she shares. This balanced perspective has guided her through the ups and downs of the real estate market

One of the most valuable lessons Ayren has learned on her entrepreneurial journey is the importance of grit and resolve, especially during tough times. “Your resolve and your grit are tested in your hardest months,” she says. “In a business that ebbs and flows with the economy, it is essential to keep a positive attitude despite the most challenging times.”

When faced with setbacks or failures, Ayren finds motivation by leaning on her favorite clientele “Nurturing strong relationships is always the best way to keep yourself from falling into despair over your business,” she advises. This focus on relationship-building has been key to her resilience and long-term success.

Advice for Aspiring Realtors

For those looking to enter the real estate industry, Ayren offers three pieces of advice: “1 Do not take rejection personally. 2. Become an expert in your area. 3. Do not let the stigma of what Realtors do and how much we get paid make you feel like you need to compromise yourself ”

A typical day for Ayren involves a mix of personal and professional routines. After an early morning walk with her dog and breakfast, she dives into calls, emails, and client follow-ups. Midday, she prioritizes her well-being with a workout, whether at the gym or a yoga class. Her afternoons are dedicated to meetings, dinner prep, and planning for the next day. It’s a busy schedule, but one that Ayren manages with grace and determination

A Legacy of Empowerment and Homeownership

Looking back, Ayren wishes she had started her entrepreneurial journey sooner Despite the challenges, she has built a legacy that extends beyond her own success. Through The Pfeifer Team, Ayren is committed to encouraging military spouses to pursue careers despite the unique challenges of military life “The importance of homeownership for military families is also a key part of the legacy I hope to leave,” she adds.

In 2020, Ayren took her commitment to supporting military spouses a step further by creating a Facebook group called Job Forum for Military Spouses. This platform, where companies can post job opportunities, has grown significantly and now boasts a large following “Being a mentor to military spouses who choose to work is very important to me,” Ayren says. “Someday, I hope to give back much more of my time and energy to this group of individuals ”

Looking Forward

As Ayren continues to grow The Pfeifer Team, her focus remains on empowering military families through real estate With a deep understanding of the unique needs of her clients and a passion for mentorship, Ayren is not only helping families build wealth but also paving the way for future military spouse entrepreneurs

JACOB MOUSSEAU Wounded

FROM BATTLEFIELD TO WORKSHOP: JACOB MOUSSEAU’S MISSION TO SUPPORT WOUNDED WARRIORS

Wounded Woodworkers

In the heart of Tennessee, where the rhythms of life intertwine with the echoes of military service, Jacob Mousseau is crafting more than just beautiful woodwork. He’s building a legacy of resilience, support, and purpose with his business, Wounded Woodworkers

A Journey from Service to Entrepreneurship

Jacob Mousseau’s journey into entrepreneurship began after a pivotal moment in his military career “After returning from deployment, I reenlisted, but my plans changed when the DOD inactivated our brigade, effectively ending my military career,” Jacob shares. The transition to civilian life was challenging, but it led him to discover a new passion woodworking.

Finding solace and therapy in the craftsmanship, Jacob invested in a workshop, where he invited fellow veterans to join him “We built projects together, learned new skills, and created a peer support group,” he recalls. However, a close call with equipment made Jacob reevaluate the risks involved in such work This realization led to a significant pivot in his entrepreneurial journey: exploring laser engraving as a safer yet equally fulfilling alternative.

The Birth of Wounded Woodworkers

What began as a therapeutic hobby soon transformed into Wounded Woodworkers, a business with a mission far greater than its products. “I was inspired to start my own business by the incredible sense of purpose I felt in giving back and helping others,” Jacob explains

The core mission of Wounded Woodworkers is simple yet profound: Preserving Memories and Supporting Heroes Jacob’s transition to laser engraving allowed him to continue his support for wounded warriors and military spouses. Instead of direct involvement in crafting, he chose to donate profits from sales to organizations dedicated to these communities “It was about combining personal fulfillment with a greater mission to support those who have served,” Jacob notes.

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Successes

Like many entrepreneurs, Jacob faced his share of challenges, with imposter syndrome being a significant hurdle. “Getting started and realizing I could really do this was tough,” he admits. With the guidance of mentors like Andrew Appleton, Shelley Jeffcoat, and Elizabeth Snodgrass, Jacob pushed through, learning the importance of taking that first step.

One of the proudest moments for Jacob was landing several B2B clients. “I always thought too small, going direct to consumer, but there’s a huge market for B2B,” he reflects. This milestone reinforced the belief that Wounded Woodworkers was on the right path

Defining Success and Building a Legacy

For Jacob, success is not just about profits but also about the impact Wounded Woodworkers has on both customers and the veteran community.

“Continually raising money while satisfying our customers with their keepsakes is our definition of success,” he says The business’s track record speaks for itself over eight years of direct-to-consumer sales with zero customer complaints.

The most important lesson Jacob has learned on his entrepreneurial journey is to “just get started ” He emphasizes that perfection is not a prerequisite for success. “You don’t always need to have everything 100% perfect when it comes to marketing. Just start getting yourself out there and growing your work authentically and organically ”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Jacob’s advice for those looking to start a business in his industry is simple: “There is plenty of room, and you just need to get started. Find a niche within the market and run with it.” He also highlights the importance of mentorship, a key factor in his success “Having experienced subject matter experts to bounce ideas off of and learn from their mistakes is invaluable.”

A Day in the Life and Looking Ahead

A typical day for Jacob as an entrepreneur is busy, filled with the demands of running a business while balancing family life. “I wake up earlier than all of my family and usually go to bed after them all too. You are your everything until you grow and can bring on help,” he shares

Looking back, Jacob wishes he had started sooner and believed in himself more as a CEO/Founder. Yet, despite any self-doubt, he has built a business that not only preserves cherished memories but also makes a difference through charitable giving aimed at helping Wounded Warriors and their families.

DEON GREEN Dee Luxe Nails, LLC

Deon Green: From Creative Visionary to Press-On Nail Pioneer

In the bustling city of Tacoma, Washington, Deon Green is redefining the world of nail art with her company, Dee Luxe Nails, LLC. Deon’s entrepreneurial journey is a blend of artistry, resilience, and strategic pivoting. Through her press-on nail business, she has crafted a brand that empowers individuals to express their unique style, all while challenging the traditional beauty industry’s norms

From Artist to Entrepreneur

Deon’s journey began long before she became a licensed nail technician “I’ve always been an artist at heart,” she says, recounting her passion for creative expression. From watercolor painting to clothing design, she dabbled in various art forms before discovering the intricate world of nail artistry Inspired by legendary women like Florence Griffith Joyner and Coko from SWV, Deon saw the potential for nails to be a form of self-expression, much like fashion accessories. However, turning her artistic passion into a business required more than just talent Deon enrolled in an accredited school to become a licensed nail technician and sought out mentors to guide her through the business side of the industry. “These mentors were essential in shortening my learning curve and accelerating the opening of my business,” Deon reflects. With hard work, she built the foundation for Dee Luxe Nails.

Overcoming Challenges and Seizing Opportunities

Starting a business is never easy, and Deon faced her share of obstacles, particularly when it came to building brand awareness and establishing trust as a newly licensed technician. “I’ve always honed my artistic skills, but I needed to learn and share my expertise on proper natural nail care and enhancements,” she explains. Consistency in trends, a luxury experience for her clients, and a commitment to lifelong learning helped her navigate these early challenges.

The pandemic brought an unexpected twist to Deon’s business, as in-person services halted due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, she saw an opportunity in the midst of the chaos. Nail enthusiasts still wanted to keep their manicures looking great from the safety of their homes, and Deon responded by launching custom press-on nails. This pivot not only kept her business alive but also expanded her reach to clients who appreciated the convenience and quality of athome nail care

Mission-Driven Innovation

At the heart of Dee Luxe Nails is a clear mission: to provide accessible, high-quality, and inclusive nail solutions that empower individuals to express themselves effortlessly. Deon believes beauty should be customizable and convenient. “Our press-on nails are designed to offer salon-quality looks without the hassle or time commitment,” she says.

Her vision extends beyond aesthetics. Deon is committed to creating products that cater to a diverse range of skin tones and personal styles, ensuring everyone can find a set that feels tailored to them. By combining beauty with functionality, she’s changing the press-on nail game with durable, eco-conscious, and affordable products

Milestones and Success

One of Deon’s proudest achievements is the loyal community she’s built over the past four years, completely self-funded. “Starting with just a few custom designs, I’ve grown my press-on nail business into a brand that people trust and love,” she shares Collaborating with influencers and other women-owned businesses has expanded her reach while aligning with her core values of empowerment and community building. Deon’s partnerships with fellow female entrepreneurs have been particularly fulfilling “We’ve uplifted and supported one another through co-branded press-on sets and cross-promotional events,” she says. These collaborations have been a cornerstone of her success, allowing her to give back to the community that has supported her

ROD MATTHEWS Brevian Energy, LLC

Empowering Communities: Rod Matthews’ Vision for a Sustainable Future with Brevian Energy

In the heart of Vista, California, Rod Matthews, founder of Brevian Energy, LLC, is on a mission to revolutionize how communities access renewable energy. As a veteran and passionate advocate for sustainability, Matthews has channeled his expertise into creating a company that delivers reliable, affordable, and renewable energy solutions With a focus on microgrids and clean energy, Brevian Energy is helping communities take control of their energy futures, one project at a time.

From Passion to Purpose

Matthews’ entrepreneurial journey is rooted in a deep-seated belief that clean energy should be a right, not a privilege His passion for sustainability blossomed during his work with data centers, where he helped reduce carbon footprints. This experience gave him invaluable insights into the renewable energy sector and sparked his drive to create tangible, long-term solutions for communities struggling with energy access.

“Growing up in an era where climate change was becoming increasingly evident, I saw firsthand the challenges communities faced,” Matthews shares “It ignited a desire within me to be part of the solution.”

Mentorship and Guidance

Like many entrepreneurs, Matthews was fortunate to have key mentors early on in his career One notable influence was a former executive from a leading renewable energy firm. This mentor helped Matthews navigate the complexities of the energy management industry and emphasized the importance of sustainable practices Their guidance on market trends and emerging technologies provided Matthews with the knowledge he needed to build Brevian Energy into the innovative company it is today

The Mission Behind Brevian Energy

At the core of Brevian Energy’s mission is the belief that everyone deserves access to clean, renewable energy Brevian Energy provides tailored microgrid solutions, designed to meet the unique needs of each community or business it serves. By integrating solar power with energy storage, these microgrids offer consistent, reliable energy even in areas where energy access is scarce or unreliable.

“Energy is a fundamental right,” Matthews says.

“Our goal is to empower communities and businesses by providing affordable, reliable, and renewable energy solutions ”

Overcoming Challenges

Starting a business in the renewable energy sector isn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles Matthews faced was navigating the complex regulatory landscape that varies by region. From local permitting processes to differing incentives, the regulatory environment can be a barrier to entry for many new businesses.

To overcome this, Matthews focused on building relationships with local authorities and engaging with industry stakeholders. “Open dialogue and collaboration helped us gain valuable insights into the regulatory environment,” he explains. “It allowed us to move forward with confidence, knowing we were working within the system rather than against it.”

Major Milestones and Successes

One of Matthews’ proudest achievements is Brevian Energy’s first major microgrid deployment in a rural community that had long struggled with consistent energy access. The success of this project didn’t just bring reliable electricity to homes and businesses; it also spurred local economic growth “We empowered the community by enabling businesses to thrive and improving the quality of life for families,” Matthews recalls.

The microgrid solution, which integrated solar energy with storage capabilities, provided power even during peak demand times, offering a model for future projects in underserved areas

Defining Success

“A successful project is one where we see tangible benefits improved quality of life for families, enhanced economic opportunities for businesses, and a reduced carbon footprint,” he says.

Each microgrid deployment is a step toward a future where energy independence is a reality for all communities, regardless of their location or resources.

Resilience in the Face of Setbacks

Entrepreneurship comes with inevitable setbacks, but Matthews credits his resilience and commitment to Brevian Energy’s mission as the driving force behind his perseverance. “Our goal of providing renewable energy to communities keeps me motivated,” he says “Setbacks are simply learning opportunities they help us refine our approach and improve our solutions.”

This mindset has helped Brevian Energy overcome challenges such as project delays and funding difficulties. By focusing on collaboration and maintaining a problem-solving attitude, Matthews has built a company capable of adapting to industry changes and market demands

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those looking to start a business in the renewable energy sector, Matthews’ advice is clear: “Prioritize understanding the unique needs of the communities you aim to serve.” Microgrids and renewable energy solutions aren’t one-size-fits-all, and tailoring them to specific local circumstances is key to success

Leaving a Legacy of Empowerment

As Matthews looks toward the future, he hopes to leave a legacy of sustainable impact and empowerment His vision is to create a world where renewable energy is accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or geography. “I want Brevian Energy to be recognized not just as a provider of microgrid solutions, but as a catalyst for positive change,” he says

Through innovation, collaboration, and resilience, Matthews and Brevian Energy are paving the way for a more sustainable and equitable energy future

Building a Military-Thriving Movement: The Journey of Kevin Schmiegel and ZeroMils

In the heart of Alexandria, Virginia, a social impact company is redefining how corporations, foundations, and individuals connect with the military community. Kevin Schmiegel, a retired Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel, is at the helm of ZeroMils, a company committed to creating “military thriving” cultures within organizations across America With a distinguished military background and a proven track record of building impactful initiatives, Schmiegel’s entrepreneurial journey is as inspiring as it is impactful.

From Marine Corps to Mission-Driven Leadership

Kevin Schmiegel’s military career spanned over 20 years, during which he served at the highest levels of the Department of Defense. From deploying to more than 50 countries to playing key roles in NATO and U.S. European Command, Schmiegel’s service was marked by leadership, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to his country. His roles included serving as Aide de Camp to the NATO and U S European Commander and spearheading the assignment and retention of 172,000 Marines worldwide during a time of war. His experience culminated in working on the peace process between Israel and Palestine, as the military assistant to the Special Envoy for Middle East Regional Security.

Upon retiring from the Marine Corps in 2009, Schmiegel transitioned to the civilian sector with the same mission-focused mindset He served as Chief of Staff at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where he founded Hiring Our Heroes (HOH), quickly transforming it into the largest veteran and military spouse employment nonprofit in the country His leadership continued at the helm of other national military and veteran nonprofits, where he raised $100 million and impacted over 10 million Americans.

The Birth of ZeroMils: A New Vision for Military Thriving

Kevin Schmiegel founded ZeroMils in response to a gap he observed in how military-connected families were supported in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. “In corporate America, terms like ‘militaryfriendly’ or ‘military-ready’ are often used to describe a company’s culture,” says Schmiegel. “But at ZeroMils, we believe these terms imply a onesided value proposition We aim to build ‘militarythriving’ cultures, where both the company and its military-connected employees can grow and thrive together.”

ZeroMils’ mission is to create military-thriving cultures by partnering with corporations to hire, value, and retain military talent, support military families through purpose-driven nonprofits, and effectively communicate these efforts through marketing strategies The company’s unique approach involves collaborating with Talent Acquisition, Social Impact, and Marketing teams to create an integrated strategy that breaks down silos and engages Veteran and Diversity Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Milestones

Starting ZeroMils was not without its challenges

“The biggest challenge was not having the infrastructure of a large organization to support our vision,” Schmiegel reflects. “When I founded Hiring Our Heroes, I had the weight of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce behind me As an entrepreneur, resources are limited. But that’s where resilience and adaptability come into play.”

Despite these challenges, ZeroMils has achieved significant milestones The company’s “Portfolio of Purpose,” which includes 50 best-in-class nonprofits, has collectively reached and impacted millions of veterans and their families. Over the past six months, ZeroMils developed a system to measure success in three key areas: hiring rates for military and veteran talent, employee engagement through ERGs, and audience reach through media.

Defining Success and Leaving a Legacy

For Schmiegel, success is about more than just business growth it’s about living and breathing the mission. Success is ensuring that every service member, veteran, and family we touch realize the five things we need to thrive post-military service: meaningful employment, “ finding purpose through continued service, being part of a connected community, health and well-being, and continuous self-improvement,” he explains

Schmiegel’s legacy through ZeroMils is clear: to create a military-thriving movement that strengthens communities and bridges the civilianmilitary divide. “We want our history to be every veteran’s and military spouse’s future,” he says. “Success is not just about our achievements but about helping others thrive.”

Lessons Learned and Words of Wisdom

Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Schmiegel has learned valuable lessons “Never give up Iterate and evolve,” he advises. His approach to setbacks is grounded in the concept of “intelligent failure,” where every failure is seen as an opportunity for learning and growth

For those looking to start a business in this industry, Schmiegel offers two key pieces of advice: ensure there is a need for your products or services, and differentiate your brand in a crowded space His approach to entrepreneurship is one of relentless pursuit and dedication, where work and life blend seamlessly into a mission-driven existence.

The Future of ZeroMils

Looking ahead, Kevin Schmiegel remains focused on expanding the impact of ZeroMils. His vision is to continue creating military-thriving cultures and to change the narrative about how veterans, military spouses, and their families are seen and heard in the workplace and society. “We are all called to serve in different ways,” Schmiegel concludes. “What’s most important is that we answer the calling, whatever it may be ”

ANNA WOOD Shaped By Strength by Anna Wood Fitness

Shaping Strength: The Empowering Journey of Anna Wood and Shaped By Strength Fitness

Anna Wood, founder of Shaped By Strength, is a living testament to the power of resilience, community, and self-belief. Based in San Diego, CA, Anna’s fitness business is not just about physical training; it’s a platform for empowerment, helping individuals uncover their inner strength and overcome life’s challenges. Her journey from a military spouse navigating new environments to a successful entrepreneur inspiring others is both motivating and rewarding

A New Beginning in San Diego

Anna’s entrepreneurial journey began when she married her husband and immediately moved to San Diego, leaving behind everything familiar The transition was challenging, especially when her husband deployed shortly after their move. Instead of retreating into isolation, Anna reached out to the local community and found a wealth of support that would lay the foundation for her future business.

Through the MyCAA program, she became a certified personal trainer, and with the backing of organizations like The Rosie Network, Anna transformed her dream of starting a fitness business into reality. “The support I found with this organization and the alumni network is truly lifechanging,” Anna reflects, underscoring the importance of community in her journey.

Inspiration from Family and Experience

Fitness and movement have always been a part of Anna’s life, inspired by her mother’s dedication to martial arts. Growing up, Anna trained and competed in judo and later Kyokushin Karate. However, when she moved away for college, she drifted away from her active lifestyle and experienced the common “freshman fifteen.” Struggling to lose weight, Anna fell into the trap of unhealthy dieting and over-exercising, leading to an eating disorder Her recovery and journey back to a healthy relationship with exercise became the foundation for her business. “Shaped By Strength was born from celebrating the journey of overcoming and uncovering the strength in each individual,” Anna shares, highlighting the mission behind her brand.

Overcoming Challenges with Support

One of the biggest challenges Anna faced was believing in herself, especially in a new country with a different culture and language. She was selfconscious about her accent and doubted whether her voice was worth listening to As a result of the Service2CEO program, Anna found the courage to embrace her uniqueness as a strength. The encouragement she received from her mentors and peers was crucial in helping her build confidence and take action

Milestones and Successes

Like many business owners, Anna faced significant challenges during the pandemic, forcing her to pivot and adapt her business model. Despite the uncertainty, she stayed committed to her mission and came out stronger. “Overcoming the personal and professional challenges brought on by the pandemic and deciding to stick it through, and being here today—several pivots happened, but my belief that my message is important has been solidified,” Anna proudly states.

Defining Success

For Anna, success is not just about hitting business targets It’s about making a significant difference in someone’s life. The most rewarding feedback she receives is from clients who tell her they now move pain-free, feel stronger in their daily lives, and have a better relationship with their bodies “Knowing that what we did today will keep on serving them years down the line and adding to their quality of life is truly rewarding,” Anna explains.

Lessons Learned on the Journey

One of the most valuable lessons Anna has learned is the importance of placing yourself in the right environment. “You can change your mindset and mental space immediately by placing yourself in the right environment and being open to learning and networking,” Anna advises. Staying connected with inspired and hardworking individuals helps keep the creativity and motivation alive

Staying Motivated in the Face of Setbacks

Anna’s motivation comes from remembering her “Why” the people she can help. Setbacks may feel personal, but they don’t define her She believes that failure is not the scariest thing; instead, the real danger lies in letting the feeling of defeat become permanent. This mindset has helped her stay resilient and continue pushing forward, even when faced with difficulties

Advice for Aspiring Fitness Entrepreneurs

For those looking to start a business in the fitness industry, Anna emphasizes the importance of knowing who you are and why what you do matters “Be clear on your values and the difference you want to make,” she advises. With so much noise and conflicting advice out there, staying true to your purpose will help you navigate the industry and make meaningful contributions

Looking Back with Gratitude

When asked if she would do anything differently, Anna acknowledges that while there are many things she would change, this is a natural feeling for anyone committed to growth “Learning from the past is useful, but beating yourself up over it is not,” she notes, adding that even mistakes and shortcomings are part of the journey.

Leaving a Legacy

Anna hopes to leave a legacy of healing, empowerment, and freedom. Through Shaped By Strength, she aims to help individuals feel free to be their happiest, healthiest selves Her story is a reminder that strength is not just about physical power it’s about overcoming challenges, embracing one’s uniqueness, and staying true to one’s purpose

Shaped By Strength by Anna Wood Fitness is more than just a business; it’s a mission to empower and uplift others Through her personal journey and professional dedication, Anna is shaping a community where strength is celebrated in all its forms, and where everyone is encouraged to find and embrace their own power.

COLLEEN MARCHI The Brave Knights

Colleen Marchi: The Brave Knights and a Mission to Empower Children

In the charming town of Auburn, California, Colleen Marchi is on a mission to help children conquer their fears and sleep soundly through the night. As the founder of The Brave Knights, Colleen’s journey into entrepreneurship was not planned, but rather born out of a desire to help her own son during a time of emotional hardship.

A Solution Born from Love

With a background in psychology, Colleen had dedicated much of her career to working with children as a therapist, educator, and coach. However, the inspiration for her business came not from her professional life, but from a personal struggle. “My son was experiencing anxiety and fear at night, especially during my husband’s deployment,” Colleen shares. After trying everything to ease his fears, she felt helpless “Fear changes the way you think and feel, and it wasn’t just affecting his nights it was impacting his days too.”

Determined to help, Colleen created The Brave Knights, a product designed to reduce children’s nighttime fears by giving them a protective companion. “It wasn’t originally meant to be a business. It was simply a solution for my son’s sleepless nights, but it worked so well that I realized I could help other families too ”

The Reluctant Entrepreneur

Despite the success of her product with her son and friends, Colleen was hesitant to take the leap into entrepreneurship. “My husband kept encouraging me, but I wasn’t looking to turn this idea into a business,” she admits It wasn’t until she came across Kobi Yamada’s children’s book, “What Do You Do With An Idea?” that Colleen knew she had to take action. “The book spoke directly to me. It was about nurturing an idea and letting it grow, and I realized that The Brave Knights could help so many other children like my son.” With the encouragement of her husband and inspiration from Stephanie Brown of The Rosie Network, Colleen took the plunge into entrepreneurship The Rosie Network’s Service2CEO program provided the guidance and mentorship she needed to turn her idea into a full-fledged business.

Overcoming Challenges and Growing Stronger

Like any entrepreneur, Colleen faced her share of challenges. From product development to marketing and manufacturing, the learning curve was steep “I had no idea how to bring a product to market,” Colleen recalls “But every obstacle became a learning experience.” With the help of The Rosie Network, Colleen learned the ropes of business and successfully launched The Brave Knights.

One of her proudest moments came when the product received widespread recognition. “We’ve been honored with several awards, including Creative Child Magazine’s award, The Mom’s Choice Award, and most recently, The Parents Pick for Best Educational Product of 2024,” Colleen beams. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for the recognition and support.”

A Mission to Empower Children

The core mission of The Brave Knights is simple: to help children overcome their fears, gain confidence, and get the sleep they need to thrive. “We believe that by teaching children to face their fears, they can conquer any challenge life throws at them,” Colleen explains. “The Brave Knights give kids a sense of security, empowering them to tackle their problems head-on ”

For Colleen, success is defined not by sales but by the impact her product has on children and families. “Hearing from parents and grandparents that their children are finally sleeping peacefully is the greatest reward,” she says. “It’s about more than just a product it’s about bringing hope and peace to families.”

Lessons in Resilience

As a former softball player, Colleen draws on the lessons she learned from sports to stay resilient in business. “Softball is a game of loss. You have to learn how to handle setbacks and keep moving forward,” she reflects. “That mindset has helped me in my business. Every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow.”

Colleen’s journey has also been a powerful lesson for her children. “I’ve shown my sons that I can do hard things, and that’s something I’m incredibly proud of,” she says. “I’ve proven to myself and to them that I’m capable of overcoming challenges ”

Looking Ahead

As The Brave Knights continues to grow, Colleen remains focused on her mission to empower children and help them build confidence. “The legacy I hope to leave is one of resilience and selfassurance,” she shares. “In a world where anxiety among children is rising, equipping them with tools to manage their fears is more important than ever ” For anyone thinking of starting their own business, Colleen offers this advice: “Listen to that little idea and feed it. You never know how far it might take you ”

RUBEN AYALA Triple Nikel

From the Battlefield to the Boardroom: The Journey of Ruben Ayala and Triple Nikel

Ruben Ayala, a veteran with a vision, has carved a unique path in the entrepreneurial world, demonstrating that success is not just about where you start but how you navigate the journey Ayala, based in San Antonio, Texas, is the force behind Triple Nikel, a clothing brand that has made waves in an industry often dominated by established giants But his journey from military service to successful entrepreneurship is as inspiring as the brand itself.

A Foundation

in

Entrepreneurship

Ayala’s entrepreneurial journey began while he was still immersed in the rigorous demands of business school at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In 2012, he laid the groundwork for what would become his first venture, San Antonio Healthy Vending. This business, which he nurtured and grew for over a decade, provided him with an invaluable education in entrepreneurship, business strategy, finance, sales, and marketing. Reflecting on this period, Ayala refers to it as his “doctorate in entrepreneurship,” a real-world education that prepared him for the challenges of his future endeavors.

The Inspiration to Venture Out

The decision to start his own business wasn’t born out of a single moment but rather a natural progression fueled by the inspiration he drew from friends who had successfully transitioned into entrepreneurship.

The appeal of autonomy and the challenge of creating something from the ground up were powerful motivators “It was just a natural progression of things that transpired throughout my journey,” Ayala explains, emphasizing that entrepreneurship was a path he was always destined to explore.

Influences and Mentors

In an industry often characterized by following trends, Ayala found his biggest influences in brands that defied the norm—FUBU, Karl Kani, and Cross Colours These companies, known for breaking boundaries and setting new standards, inspired him to create a brand that would challenge the status quo in the clothing industry.

The Mission Behind Triple Nikel

The mission of Triple Nikel is clear: to be the trendsetters in an industry that traditionally swings one way. Ayala and his team are not just selling clothing; they are redefining what it means to be a leader in the fashion industry, especially as a veteran-owned business. Their focus is on creating apparel that resonates with their community, telling stories through their designs that are often overlooked by mainstream fashion

Overcoming Challenges

Starting a clothing company with zero experience in the industry was a daunting challenge for Ayala and his business partners. The learning curve was steep, and the process of selecting, printing, and managing logistics was foreign territory. But with determination and resourcefulness, they turned to “YouTube University” and sought out mentors willing to guide them This willingness to learn and adapt was key to overcoming their initial obstacles

Milestones of Success

In just three years, Triple Nikel has achieved milestones that many seasoned companies can only dream of The brand is now distributed through major retailers, has a thriving Amazon storefront, and is on the verge of launching a nonprofit to address issues in underserved communities For Ayala, these achievements are a testament to what can be accomplished with vision, hard work, and a commitment to innovation.

Defining Success

For Ayala, success is defined not just by reaching goals but by the journey of getting there. He measures success by any metric that was previously planned and considers tasks completed at a 70% rate as a success. This pragmatic approach allows him to stay focused on progress rather than perfection, a philosophy that has served him well in his entrepreneurial journey.

Lessons Learned

The most important lesson Ayala has learned is the value of listening to those around him He emphasizes the importance of taking advice from business partners, advisors, and mentors, who often have the entrepreneur’s best interests at heart. This collaborative approach has been crucial in navigating the complexities of building a successful business.

Continuing the Grind

For Ayala, the road ahead is filled with opportunities, challenges, and the drive to make a difference in the industry and beyond.

Staying Motivated

Maintaining motivation and resilience is crucial for any entrepreneur, and Ayala attributes his ability to stay the course to a healthy lifestyle. Regular workouts, staying active, and keeping vices to a minimum have been instrumental in his ability to thrive under pressure. “You have to stay healthy,” he advises, underscoring the importance of physical and mental well-being in sustaining long-term success

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Ayala’s advice for those looking to start a business in the clothing industry is simple: seek a mentor. He warns against those who charge for advice, emphasizing that true mentors are motivated by a desire to help others succeed, not by profit. This guidance is especially valuable for those just starting out, as the right mentor can significantly shorten the learning curve

Looking Back and Looking Forward

Looking back on his journey, Ayala has no major regrets but does entertain the idea of having started a coffee company while in business school an opportunity that, in hindsight, might have been another successful venture. As for the legacy he hopes to leave, Ayala wants to inspire others to believe in their potential, proving that “you can be whatever you want to be in life.”

Triple Nikel is more than just a clothing brand; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when passion, perseverance, and purpose come together Under Ruben Ayala’s leadership, the company is poised to leave a lasting impact on the fashion industry and the communities it serves.

Recognizing the growing trend of military spouses turning to entrepreneurship for flexibility, stability, and a creative outlet, Monica saw a gap in the market. There wasn’t a central location where people could shop and support businesses run by military families, so she decided to create one. “With very little knowledge in building a multivendor marketplace, I was determined to help our community shine and make a greater impact, so I just kept going!” she says.

A Light Bulb Moment

Monica’s entrepreneurial spirit had always been strong, but she wanted to create a business that made a difference. The idea for Spouse-ly truly took shape during a car ride to dinner with fellow military spouses “There was so much talent within that one car ride alone that I knew I had to do something!” Monica recalls. This realization became the catalyst for Spouse-ly, an online platform that showcases a wide variety of products and services created by military and first responder families

Overcoming Challenges and Building Community

Starting Spouse-ly wasn’t without its challenges. Operating on a bootstrap budget and navigating the noise of entrepreneurial advice were significant hurdles. Monica overcame these obstacles by getting resourceful and staying true to her vision.

“I decided to continue building and growing on a tight budget, knowing that together as a community we were pouring a strong foundation for how we wanted Spouse-ly to evolve,” she explains.

Monica’s perseverance and dedication paid off in a big way One of her proudest moments was making the Forbes Next 1000 List, a milestone that opened the door to new opportunities and increased visibility for Spouse-ly. “That was the first big media milestone for us,” Monica says “It helped open the door to many more opportunities, lists, and being able to spread the word about our inspiring community organically.”

Defining Success Through Impact

For Monica, success isn’t just about financial growth; it’s about making a meaningful impact. “Everyone measures success differently, and to be honest, we go through different seasons of what success looks like for ourselves,” she reflects “I personally measure my success by impact and dedication. The same goes for the business side of things creating a company that fosters a full circle of growth and success together ”

Monica’s journey has been guided by a powerful mantra: “Growth begins when comfort ends.” This philosophy has helped her navigate the challenges and setbacks that come with entrepreneurship “With every challenge or failure comes a new opportunity,” she notes, emphasizing the importance of resilience and adaptability.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those looking to start a business in ecommerce or a community-driven industry, Monica’s advice is simple: “Just get started. If you have a dream or passion to start a business, don’t hold yourself back trying to make it perfect. Perfection is not the key to success, and you will learn and grow along the way.”

Monica’s daily routine as an entrepreneur involves wearing multiple hats and constantly learning She loves being involved in the community, solving problems with her team, and finding new ways to scale and grow Spouse-ly. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she advises, echoing one of the best pieces of advice she has received on her journey

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Monica wishes she hadn’t held back because of fear “There are a number of things that have come up throughout my journey that I wish I would have been able to achieve a different outcome from, but at the end of the day, all you can do is try and learn along the way,” she says

Looking to the future, Monica hopes to leave a legacy that inspires others to turn the impossible into “I’m possible ” She believes that all it takes is the courage to take the first step forward

Through Spouse-ly, Monica Fullerton has created more than just an online marketplace; she’s built a thriving community that empowers military and first responder families to pursue their passions and achieve success on their own terms. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, resourcefulness, and the unwavering belief that with determination, anything is possible

Kimberly Nguyen: Healing Through Art with Art Therapy with Kim

Kimberly Nguyen, a licensed professional counselor and board-certified art therapist based in San Antonio, Texas, is the founder of Art Therapy with Kim As the daughter of Vietnam War refugees and a military spouse, Kimberly has always been drawn to healing trauma. Her journey into entrepreneurship, however, was less planned and more driven by necessity

Discovering Entrepreneurship

“I didn’t plan to become a business owner,” Kimberly admits Her classmates encouraged her to launch her own practice after seeing her struggles with burnout at her previous job. It wasn’t until she took the leap in September 2023 that she realized entrepreneurship ran in her family her parents had built a successful restaurant business after immigrating to Austin, Texas, in the 1970s.

The Birth of Art Therapy with Kim

Kimberly launched Art Therapy with Kim due to the need for greater financial stability and control over her well-being. “I needed more energy and autonomy to give my clients the quality care they deserved.” Specializing in trauma healing through creative expression, Kimberly’s business is rooted in providing a safe and supportive space for her clients.

Mentors and Influences

Throughout her journey, Kimberly leaned on the support of her art therapist friends from graduate school and her partner, a successful USAF recruiter “They gave me the tough love and practical advice I needed to make the transition from employee to business owner.”

Challenges and Growth

One of Kimberly’s biggest hurdles was managing the financial and administrative side of her business Hiring a tax expert who specialized in private practice therapists made a huge difference, helping her navigate the complexities of running a business while keeping it debt-free.

Defining Success

For Kimberly, success means more than business growth it’s about finding balance. “I now have the energy to create my own artwork and spend time with loved ones, which makes me a better therapist ” Her ability to provide trauma-informed care has only improved as her well-being has flourished alongside her practice.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Kimberly emphasizes the importance of building a solid support system and investing in help early on.

“Surround yourself with people who are on the same journey, and don’t shy away from opportunities like pitch competitions they can be a game-changer.”

A Day in the Life

Kimberly works with clients from noon to 6 P.M. four days a week and dedicates one day to administrative work. Outside of work, she enjoys creative projects, reading, and exercise “This balance is crucial, especially in trauma therapy.”

Looking Forward

Kimberly hopes to inspire others as an AAPI female therapist and business owner “I want my clients to always feel like they have a safe space to return to, and I hope to show that healing through art is a powerful, transformative process.”

MOSHE KRAFCHOW

TreeCulture

Moshe Krafchow: Building a Safer Future with TreeCulture

Moshe Krafchow, founder of TreeCulture, is pioneering a unique approach to forest management in San Diego, California After serving in the Navy, Moshe’s passion for the environment led him to pursue studies in Environmental Systems at Humboldt State University, where his groundbreaking work began.

From Research to Reality

While conducting research on an overgrown lot in McKinleyville, California, Moshe developed the technique that would become the foundation of TreeCulture “The lot had been left alone for almost 30 years, overrun with Himalayan Blackberry. This is where I started developing the methods that shape TreeCulture’s approach,” Moshe recalls. However, his work was met with unexpected resistance Despite the success of his project, he struggled to gain support from his university professors, which ultimately led him to realize the value of his research.

“I tried to structure my thesis around the project but couldn’t get any professors to advise me. It became clear that I owned all my research, and that’s when I saw myself as a business ”

A Mission to Clean and Protect Forests

The mission behind TreeCulture is to address the neglected state of many vegetative communities— forests left alone without herbivores to maintain them. Over time, these areas become overgrown, unhealthy, and prone to wildfires. Moshe’s method involves cleaning up long-neglected forests with hand tools, reducing fire hazards, and promoting vigorous growth. The final step? Bringing in herbivores to maintain the land’s health.

“My process turns low-productivity, high-hazard land into low-hazard, high-productivity land, while keeping it wild ”

Challenges in Changing the System

One of Moshe’s greatest challenges has been navigating the complex system of land ownership and management “All the open spaces around towns are controlled by multiple jurisdictions and overlapping authorities,” Moshe explains. “Getting them to do something new, especially something non-standard, is extremely difficult ” Although Moshe hasn’t fully overcome these challenges yet, he remains hopeful that as climate change worsens and wildfire risks increase, authorities will turn to solutions like TreeCulture to address the problem at its root

Early Success and Future Aspirations

Moshe’s first major milestone was securing a paid proof-of-concept demonstration on Palomar Mountain, California. “That was a huge moment for me, seeing my method applied and validated.”

For Moshe, success would mean being able to quit his day job and focus on TreeCulture full-time “Supporting myself solely through this business would be the start of success,” he says. However, the journey has also taught him to manage his expectations “Keep expectations from others low, no matter what they say or how excited they get It protects you emotionally when things don’t pan out.”

A Day in the Life of an Entrepreneur

Balancing a day job with running TreeCulture is no small feat. Moshe works from 6 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. and spends any free time working on his business. “Some days I pick up my kids or make dinner, and I dedicate Sundays to working on TreeCulture Occasionally, I’ll take time off from my day job for meetings or project work.”

Looking Forward

In the long run, Moshe hopes to normalize clean forests around urban areas, maintained by grazing herds. He envisions a future where people look back in disbelief at how wildfires were once exacerbated by the policies of conservation by neglect

MICHELLE PENCZAK Squared Away

MICHELLE PENCZAK: REVOLUTIONIZING REMOTE WORK FOR MILITARY SPOUSES WITH SQUARED AWAY

In the heart of North Carolina, Michelle Penczak is leading a remote work revolution for military spouses through her company, Squared Away Her entrepreneurial journey is rooted in her own experiences as a military spouse, navigating the challenges of relocations and deployments, while seeking flexible work options that aligned with her dynamic lifestyle. What started as a personal need has evolved into a business that provides meaningful, remote employment for nearly 400 military spouses, while supporting entrepreneurs and business leaders with top-tier virtual executive assistance

From Military Spouse to Business Owner

Michelle’s journey into entrepreneurship began after years of struggling with traditional jobs that didn’t fit the transient nature of military life. “I started my remote assistant experience in 2013 after a long job search. It made me realize the need for flexible, remote work options that could accommodate military spouses like me,” she recalls The breaking point came in 2015 when the company she worked for shut down without warning. Faced with an uncertain future, Michelle decided to carve out her own path instead of searching for yet another job

In 2017, she officially launched Squared Away, a virtual executive assistant company built on the mission of empowering military spouses with flexible, remote work opportunities. What began as a small project has since grown into a thriving business, with over $26 million paid directly to military families “I never saw myself as an entrepreneur, but when the opportunity presented itself, I realized it was the perfect time to create something that aligned with my values and passions,” Michelle reflects

Building a Mission-Driven Business

The mission behind Squared Away is clear: to create career opportunities for military spouses, allowing them to thrive professionally while managing the unique challenges of military life. Michelle’s vision has always centered on empowering military families, and this is reflected in the success of her business In 2024, Squared Away hit a major milestone by surpassing $40 million in revenue, a testament to the company’s dedication to its core mission. “Every time we provide a military spouse with a flexible, fulfilling career, that’s success to me,” she says

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Traction

Starting a business is never easy, and Michelle’s biggest challenge was getting the word out about Squared Away. “Attracting customers and letting people know we existed was tough in the beginning,” she admits By leveraging her network and focusing on building relationships, Michelle and her team were able to grow their client base. Exceptional service and word-ofmouth referrals helped spread the word, and soon Squared Away became a trusted resource for businesses seeking reliable, virtual support. Michelle also credits the support of her cofounder, Shane Mac, and other mentors for helping her navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. “Shane’s insights into leadership and business strategy were invaluable. He helped me shorten the learning curve and grow Squared Away into what it is today ”

Defining Success Through Empowerment

For Michelle, success is not just about financial growth, but about making a lasting impact on the lives of military spouses “It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about the people. Every time we help a spouse find meaningful work that fits into their unpredictable lives, that’s success,” she explains The flexibility that Squared Away offers allows military spouses to balance their professional and personal lives in ways traditional jobs cannot, which is at the heart of the company’s mission.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Michelle’s biggest lesson in her entrepreneurial journey has been the importance of asking for help “I used to think I needed to have all the answers, but I’ve learned that it’s okay to not know everything,” she says.
