The Rumson Country Day School Annual Donor Report 2015-2016

Dear RCDS Community, We should be proud of ourselves. How many times can we say this when it comes to fundraising? Last year’s Annual Giving campaign achieved an unprecedented 92% participation rate coupled with an all-time high dollar amount. While the amount of money raised was important and necessary to support the school, the most impressive feat was the overwhelming percentage of parents who choose to support our school. The national average for participation rates in independent school annual giving hovers in the 60’s. In sports parlance, this is a “beat down!” I want to thank every parent who has made a commitment to support RCDS. Your participation shows faith in our school. Most importantly it shows you are supporting your child’s educational experience. It is a show of support for our faculty; a show of support for our professional development directions; and a show of support for the myriad extracurricular programs. We pride ourselves on consistently striving for excellence in the classroom. This annual campaign is where proud meets pride. Thank you. Respectfully, Whitney Slade Head of School

The Impact of Annual Giving Where does the money from Annual Giving go? Contributions to Annual Giving are unrestricted and go to the school’s highest priority at the time of the gift’s receipt. These gifts support every aspect of a child’s educational experience, help keep tuition increases modest, and provide assistance to outstanding faculty, financial aid for qualified students, small class sizes, no-cost athletic programs, no-cost performing arts programs, family-style lunch, up-to-date technology, and field trips for all grades. In addition to the educational impact of your contributions, many more building projects, which impact the safety and health of our students and faculty, are required each year. Your financial support helped us address these vital projects last year:

• Roof repairs on the 1990 wing • Roof repairs on the Blake Gymnasium • 6th Grade wing renovations including new floors • New flooring in hallway • Flooring replaced in the Early Childhood Center • Classroom updates in the Early Childhood Center • Updated boilers and HVAC systems • Updated lighting in the Blake Gymnasium

Thank You!

Lizzie Huesman ’16 was selected by Upper School faculty to make remarks at Commencement. As a surprise to the eighth graders, this year’s commencement address was delivered by Mrs. Jane Denny who retired after 35 years of service to RCDS. Head of School Whitney Slade presented several special awards to the following graduates:

2015-16 Board of Trustees Dear Friends, With school well underway, I hope you have had a chance to pause and celebrate The Rumson Country Day School’s 90th Anniversary at one of our many events. From my involvement with RCDS as a graduate, parent, and now President of the Board for the last two years, I can attest that there is a palpable excitement on campus as we shape our vision for the future. Part of this energy stems from a number of accomplishments RCDS celebrated this year: • RCDS was one of the only PreK - 8 independent schools in NJ where enrollment increased for the 2016-17 school year. • 92% of our parents supported the Annual Giving Campaign, exceeding the industry average of 60% parent participation and raising a record breaking $735,000. • Close to 90% of our faculty and administration took advantage of professional development opportunities last summer, which directly benefits our students.

2015-2016 Board of Trustees John H. Devlin, Jr. ’83, President Danielle Devine Greene ’79, Vice President James Reid, Vice President Kim Tsimbinos, Secretary Greg Melconian, Treasurer Denise Thomas, Assistant Treasurer Michael Bruno Jennifer Steiner Crowell ’88 Jeffrey Cruz Kristi Evans Susan Kyrillos John Leibee Eileen O’Hern Luby Jennifer Hurtt Mullins ’85 Stephen Padovano Suzanne Post Siran Sahakian Mark Stewart Howard D. Wolfe III ’90

• Four new board members and three new staff members have joined our team to bring valuable skills and expertise to our PR and Marketing and Development Departments. • We are experiencing the highest attendance rates we have ever seen at our 25th and 50th Alumni Reunions, Beginners Dinner and Grandparents and Special Friends Day. What does all of this mean our students? It means that the children who attend RCDS are part of a dynamic growing community where parents, past and present trustees, current and former staff, alumni, grandparents and special friends are moving in one direction to provide a strong network of support. This type of cooperation has fueled a powerful joint effort encouraging us to push ourselves to reach our full potential as a school, board and larger RCDS community. We look forward to your continued support of RCDS as we look to the future, and hope to keep you engaged throughout our journey. The board has begun a strategic planning process this fall and we look forward to sharing our vision for the future in the coming months. I invite you to share your thoughts and ideas with me and as we continue to celebrate our strong traditions and culture, and build on our past successes for future generations of RCDS families. Sincerely, John H. Devlin, Jr. ’83 President

Passing The Torch

On June 30, RCDS bid farewell to its former Director of Development, Jessica Goski. Jessica and her family relocated to Denver, Colorado, where she took on a new development director role at Graland Country Day School, a Preschool-Grade 8 independent school in the Hilltop neighborhood of Denver. After a thorough search, The Rumson Country Day School was thrilled announce that Missy Falkenberg is serving as the new Director of Development. Missy comes to RCDS most recently from Riverkeeper, where she was the Vice President for Development of the member-supported organization dedicated to the Hudson River and its tributaries and protecting the drinking water supply of New York City and Hudson Valley residents. Prior to her work at Riverkeeper, Missy was the Vice President for Development at The New York Stem Cell Foundation, where she spent over six years building the fundraising program from the ground up. Earlier in her career, Missy also was a development officer at Parsons, The New School for Design, and The Smithsonian Institution.

Jessica Goski

Missy received her B.A. in Printmaking and Art Education from the University of Georgia and her M.A. in Arts Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University. Missy and her husband just relocated to the area and her sons, August and Wilson, are Grade 3 and Beginners students at RCDS this year, respectively. Please join RCDS in enthusiastically welcoming Missy to the school community. Missy can be reached at mfalkenberg@rcds.org or 732-842-0527 ext. 1142.

From The Parent C Dear Friends, Last year was another amazing year in the RCDS community. As I reflect on the past year, I am amazed at the dedication, hard work, and generosity of all our fellow parents. Due to the kindness of each of you, we were able to accomplish so much for our students this year. Parent Council is an organization made up of every RCDS parent. Each year the Executive Parent Council oversees 20 different committees. Each committee works hard to create successful events in which our community comes together and celebrates the RCDS family. Thank you to all of our families for your support. The volunteer efforts and support of all our parents enabled Parent Council to make a generous donation of approximately $248,000 for our school and children during the 20152016 school year. Because of this donation, our kids will be staying “cool with the addition of a new air conditioning in the 1954 building. I would like to give special thanks to Gator Ball Chairs - Diana Stumberger and Carol Cerussi - and the committee members. Due to their tireless efforts, and the generosity of our parents, Gator Ball, our largest Friend-raiser, raised approximately $154,000. Parent Council was once again thrilled to enhance the education of our children. We brought in many speakers and programs and were able to send the 8th-grade class on a trip to NYC. We were also able to host Family Field Day, a Welcome Cocktail Party, The Halloween Party, BINGO night, and make a donation to the library. This past year, Parent Council has continued its tradition of making a significant donation to the RCDS Financial Aid Fund from our annual Rummage Sale. Thank you chairs, Nellie Harmon, Pamela Martens, Melissa Stevenson, and the entire Whale of a Sale team. Thank you to the parent body who made this weekend such a success not only for RCDS but also for our local community. As I conclude my first year as Parent Council President, I want to thank each and every one of you for your support. I look forward to working together throughout another exciting and successful year. Fondly, Nikki Alpert Parent Council President

Legacy Society The Legacy Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit The Rumson Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission, and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at RCDS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of The Rumson Country Day School Legacy Society. All names are recognized in our Annual Donor Report and on the school’s website. Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount, or a certain percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust after paying all debts, costs and other prior legacies. Whichever form you prefer, you can direct that your bequest be unrestricted for the general support of our mission or for a specific purpose you designate (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended). Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime. You can modify your gift to address changing circumstances. The Legacy Society is open to anyone to join and gifts of all sizes are accepted. Whatever your objectives, we will be happy to work with you in planning and bequest that will be satisfying, economical, and effective in carrying out your wishes. Please contact us so that we can assist you through every step of the process or if you have already included RCDS in your estate planning. We would like to add your name to our roster of distinguished legacy

Vitae Disce Spotlight: The DeMeulemeester Family “We support RCDS because we can see first-hand how it’s fostered a real strength of character in our sons, Cole and Sean. They are both well-rounded, confident, warm and humble boys and easily build relationships. They have developed skills and friendships Tthat they will take with them throughout their lives. Our son Cole graduated in 2014 and is now an Upper (Junior) at Andover. RCDS helped him to develop a wide range of interests and talents over the years through the school’s wide range of offerings, and as a result of the relationships he established with his exceptional teachers and coaches. He now plays football, competes in Nordic skiing, was a DJ on Andover’s radio station, and this year was offered a leadership role as a proctor in his dorm, “Andover Cottage”, which was a big honor as an Upper. It’s been a seamless transition for him, and we know the education Cole received at RCDS has played an essential role in his development. RCDS has been a true home for our family for now close to 12 years. We continue our tradition of supporting the school in the hope that Sean and current and future families will benefit from the same education, core values and relationships that we have been so fortunate to experience.” -Robert & Kathy DeMeulemeester

RCDS Arts Festival On the evening of April 25, 2016, RCDS hosted its first annual Arts Festival, showcasing students’ talents across a broad artistic spectrum. Colorful two- and three-dimensional artwork was displayed throughout the school and student performers demonstrated their skills and passions for singing, musical instruments, speech recitation, and more. All in attendance felt pride and joy for these gifted (and brave!) young people who took the stage in front of faculty members, parents, and their peers. Three cheers for RCDS and its Gator artists!

Why Give?

You can make an immediate and meaningful difference for our students and the dedicated faculty who teach them!

You may wonder how your child will benefit when you make a charitable gift to RCDS. Our school is well known for academic excellence in a warm, nurturing environment. Both are supported not only by your tuition dollars but also by many charitable contributions from our families and friends. Our small classes, talented teachers, reading and mat resources, cutting edge technology, and many exceptional offerings in the arts and athletics are all enhanced by contributions from donors like you. Your gift to Annual Giving – the school’s most important and impactful fundraising priority each year – is necessary because tuition alone does not cover the true cost of educating your child. In fact, tuition covers approximately 80% of the cost at most private day schools. That’s why independent schools need endowments, supplementary revenue from activities such as summer camps and facilities rentals, and yes, fundraising. Since our school is a relatively small community, as compared to a university or hospital, we have fewer supporters. Several families make our school their philanthropic priority for just this reason. Annual Giving, capital campaigns for special projects, endowment funds in support of the facility, financial aid and the faculty, gifts of securities, planned giving in the form of bequests etc., and gifts in kind are just some of the ways you can help advance the mission of The Rumson Country Day School.
