County Tourism & Film wins award for “Best Use of Social Media” In a competitive category that spanned all industries, Westchester County Tourism & Film’s organic Instagram work—designed to position the County as a destination “beyond the everyday” and support tourism recovery during the pandemic—won Best Use of Social Media in the Bronze Anvil Awards, as presented by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The nation’s leading professional organization serving the communications community, PRSA has been conducting its Bronze Anvil Awards for 79 years. The award program recognizes the best of the best in public relations tactics that contribute to the success of overall programs or campaigns. Other finalists in the category included Tropicana, TABASCO® Brand, Providence and Jackson State University Communications. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “As Westchester County Tourism continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic, inspiring storytelling

keeps our region top-of-mind for travel consideration. The groundwork Westchester Tourism laid, and the collaboration with the municipalities means the County now has a more robust and more engaged online community to connect with going forward.” Westchester County Tourism & Film’s Instagram work (@westchestercountytourismny) also earned gold this spring in the 2021 Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International’s (HSMAI) Adrian Awards in the Digital Marketing-Social Media Campaign category. For 65 years HSMAI has recognized travel marketing excellence through its Adrian Awards, and Westchester Tourism’s Instagram work was judged among the best practices and innovations in the hospitality industry that will empower recovery. The Instagram campaign was also a finalist in PR Daily’s 2021 Digital Marketing & Social Media Awards. Westchester County Tourism

& Film’s social media marketing effort is led by Director Natasha Caputo and integrated marketing communications agency, Mower. To support tourism recovery to the region, dynamic storytelling was leveraged across Instagram—from in-feed posts and stories to newer features like reels and guides—to introduce the people and places of Westchester that make it a vibrant, special destination for an easy getaway. Representatives of the County, from restaurants like Goosefeather and The Cookery to attractions like Lyndhurst Mansion, Jay Heritage Center, Armour-Stiner Octagon House and Hudson River Museum, as well as shops and businesses like Penny Lick Ice Cream and Wings Air Helicopter Tours, were given an opportunity to share their firsthand stories through Westchester Tourism’s Instagram channel. Important events like Westminster Kennel Club’s Dog Show, which moved to Westchester County in 2021, and returns again this year,

were also spotlighted. Building on Westchester County Tourism & Film’s “Beyond” brand platform, first launched in January 2020, different County municipalities were engaged for the curation of 17 hyper-local itineraries for visitwestchesterny.com. Those recommendations were then transformed into a series of complementing Instagram reels that offered a snapshot of the County’s unique communities, helping travelers map how to make the most of their time in Westchester. Caputo added: “It’s important for us to connect with prospective travelers where they are, and 40% of the U.S. population is on Instagram. We knew this rapidly evolving online channel, which offers many visually captivating opportunities to express the Westchester travel experience, was important to get right, and we worked to pull every lever Instagram offered to tell Westchester’s travel story. The response was incredible.” (Submitted)

Westchester County Executive George Latimer has signed into law legislation that would require the posting of notices warning of the dangers of weapons or firearms at the point of sale and at the point of the issuance of a firearm license. Latimer said: “We as a County are limited as to what we can do when it comes to preventing access to firearms, but as we banned the gun show at the County Center we can take steps to strip away the glorification of weapons. Similar to the Surgeon General’s Warning on cigarettes, this warning will remind people just how dangerous guns are.” Chairwoman Catherine Borgia said: “When we first began discussing this law a few years ago, I was stunned to learn of the sheer number of accidental deaths of children in homes that have guns. I think that just a reminder of the safety necessary when people choose to have guns in their homes is so important. When my children where younger and we would go to houses for play dates, I would always ask ‘Is there a gun in your house?’ And more than a few parents say, ‘Our kids don’t know.’ But, they do know. This will be a valuable reminder for anyone who is a buyer of a weapon that safety measures are critical for the well-being of their own loved ones.” This new law would require every person, firm or corporation located in Westchester and engaged in the retail business of selling weapons to post a notice where weapons or firearms are displayed or deliv-

ered to the purchaser at the entrance to the site and in at least one additional area where sales occur conspicuously stating, in no smaller than 24-point type and on paper at least 8 and 1/2 inches by 11 inches in bold print the following warning:

ACCESS TO A WEAPON OR FIREARM IN THE HOME SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES THE RISK OF SUICIDE, HOMICIDE, DEATH DURING DOMESTIC DISPUTES AND UNINTENTIONAL DEATHS TO CHILDREN, HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS AND OTHERS. IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE IS EXPERIENCING DISTRESS AND/ OR DEPRESSION, CALL THE CRISIS PREVENTION AND RESPONSE TEAM AT (914) 925-5959 or THE NATIONAL SUICIDE HOTLINE AT 988 Upon the issuance of a license, the County Clerk would also be required to provide the licensee a written copy of the notice indicating the warning risks of the presence of a weapon or firearm in the home. New York Chapter of Moms Demand Action Volunteer Barry Graubart said: “In Westchester County, gun safety is a top priority, and that includes ensuring that county residents understand the risks that firearms bring with them in the home. Potential gun owners deserve to know what it means to have guns in their homes, and this ordinance is a major step toward creating that awareness. We are glad to see County Executive Latimer sign this important common sense measure into effect.” (Submitted)

Health Department offers tips to help avoid rabies With warmer weather here, many of us spend more time outdoors, so the Westchester County Health Department wants residents to know how to protect themselves, their families and their pets from potential rabies exposure. June is Rabies Awareness Month. Rabies is a fatal virus spread from the saliva of an infected animal through a bite or scratch. It can be prevented with a series of vaccines, but is not treatable. Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler, MD, said: “Keep your distance from wild and stray animals, and teach your children to avoid them, too. If you, your child or your pet are bitten or scratched by someone else’s pet, get the name and address of the owner so that the biting pet’s rabies vaccine records can be verified. That way, the bite victim may be able to avoid a series of rabies shots.” Should a bat get into your home, capture and contain it and call the Health Department immediately so that the bat can be tested for rabies. To learn how to safely capture a bat in your home: https:// health.westchestergov.com/rabies/ rabies-in-bats. What can you do to keep animals away from and out of your home? • Ensure doors and windows are

secure. Add strong screens to chimneys and attic vents. Seal any gaps around air conditioners. • If a bat finds its way into your house, confine or capture it (without further exposing yourself) and call the health department at 914813-5000 to arrange for testing. • Keep pet food and water dishes inside. • Do not leave bird seed and bread crumbs on the ground around your property. • Do not leave food outdoors unattended. • Cover garbage cans securely. How can you tell if an animal is rabid? • Unusual behavior may be the first sign of rabies in an animal. • A rabid animal may become either abnormally aggressive or unusually tame. • Some rabid animals lose their fear of people and become excited and irritable, or appear passive and lethargic. • Staggering and frothing at the mouth are sometimes noted. What should you do if bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal? • Wash the bite or scratch with warm, soapy water. • Call your doctor or hospital to find out if additional treatment is needed. • Report the incident to the health

department, 24 hours a day, at (914) 813-5000. If calling after business hours, follow the recorded instructions for reporting public health emergencies. What should you do if your pet fights with another animal? • Wear gloves when handling your pet during and after an encounter with another animal. • Call your veterinarian and the animal control officer in your community to report the incident. • If you pet is exposed to a suspect rabid animal, try to keep the animal in sight until the police or a wildlife trapper arrives. • If your pet bites or scratches someone, confine your animal and call the Westchester County Health Department immediately at 813-5000. There are a few simple procedures to follow so that the injured person does not need rabies post-exposure treatment. Be sure to keep your pet’s rabies vaccines current and contact your veterinarian to verify your pet’s rabies vaccine records. More information about rabies and its prevention can be found on the Health Department’s website atwww.westchestergov.com/ health. Latimer announces the reopening of the South County Trailway Walkers, bikers and joggers can now expect a smooth experience on the South County Trailway as it has been fully paved. Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “Westchester County is a destination with several assets that have been in need of repair. Over the past few years we have been able to take what we already have and enhance it. I’m thrilled to add the South County Trailway to

this list.” While the paving portion of the project is complete, additional work along the trailway is still in progress including dressing the edges with topsoil, seeding as well as gates and signage installation. Bikers can expect to dismount when approaching job sites. Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, Kathy O’Connor said, “The Westchester County

trailways are the most utilized facility in our parks system. I look forward to the community enjoying the updated trailway for years to come.” The $3.1 million capital project kicked off last spring, completely rebuilding the 6.4mile portion of the trailway from Barney Street in Yonkers to 119 in Elmsford. In addition to paving, draining, piping, fencing, crosswalks, gates and parking lots were all rebuilt. (Submitted)

Taste of Harrison returns

to support library with great success Over 30 Harrison restaurants and merchants prepared their offerings for Taste of Harrison held on Sunday, May 15th. Library supporters, residents and anyone who was hungry and made a modest donation to the library, were able to savor the delectable fare and enjoy the camaraderie and friendly faces offered by the participating restaurants in downtown Harrison. “We’re very excited to bring back Taste of Harrison for 2022,” says HPL Foundation trustee and event chair Raymond Villani. “It was a fun way to raise money for the Harrison Public Library while drawing attention to the many great restaurants in town. From Blooming Buds near West Street, to Harrison Market on Oakland, everyone enjoyed a mile of smiles, great food, and community uplift while supporting the library. Many thanks to the restaurants, volunteers and residents who come together to make the day a success.” Restaurants and merchants who donate prizes, and contributing sponsors underwrite the costs of the event so that all proceeds go to support the Library through the Harrison Public Library Foundation. The Avalon Harrison was the lead sponsor for Taste of Harrison. Also sponsoring were DeCicco & Sons Markets and Harrison Meadows Country Club. A cadre of HPLF volunteers made it all possible. The annual event took place from 12 to 3 PM on a beautiful Sunday, May 15th, in downtown Harrison. There was a free shuttle bus available to assist with going up and down Halstead Avenue. SoundWaters welcomes RHS intern SoundWaters, the Stamford-based environmental education organization, has welcomed Rye High School senior, Caroline Mayer, for its spring internship program. Mayer is working for five weeks at the organization’s Coastal Education Center at Cove Island Park in Stamford. She is part of a larger group of spring interns from several area high schools who, instead of attending classes for the final weeks of their high school careers, work in internships to experience a real-world business environment. At SoundWaters, Mayer is working every day alongside and under the guidance of SoundWaters professional educators, teaching the science of Long Island Sound to pre-school, elementary and middle school students from schools across the region. They are helping students in a classroom and lab setting, but also on the beach and in boats on Holly Pond where their young students do their field work. Over the five week period of their internship, they will work with over 1900 students. “SoundWaters is an amazing organization and I am lucky to have this internship. I get to work outside around the water with kids and help them learn about Long Island Sound and how to protect the environment,” said Mayer, who will be attending Bates College in the fall. “I enjoy helping the students, and I’m also learning a lot about Long Island Sound myself and how a non- profit works,” Mayer added. “The SoundWaters High School Internship Program is a model for

professional development and environmental stewardship. Our interns develop their job and leadership skills on a daily basis as they perform scientific experiments, aquarium maintenance and assist with

our STEM programs, reaching over 100 students each day. The SoundWaters intern program is a powerful learning experience,” said Christina Genz, SoundWaters Director of Education. (Submitted)

REGIONAL FINALS

RYE NISKAYUNA SHAKER HS

Game Notes: • Rye led 8-6 early in the 3rd quarter • Kian McCarthy led the Garnets with 5 goals By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor The Rye Garnets might be preparing for their toughest test of the season to date, but this was always how they drew it up. On Wednesday, June 8, the Section I champs will take on Section IIX powerhouse Garden City in Albany, with the winner punching its ticket to this weekend’s state championship game. For Rye, the opportunity has been years in the making. The Garnets earned the right to take on the Long Island champ with subregional-round laugher over Section IX Warwick and an 18-8 win over Niskayuna on Saturday in the Class B regional finals. Even though the score Saturday’s score might have seemed a bit one-sided, the game was anything but, with the Silver Warriors trailing by as little as two goals at points early in the second half. Ultimately, though, the Garnets were able to put together a dominant stretch of lacrosse that has become their staple over the last few weeks, turning on the jets late to sprint away from their Section II challengers. “Niskayuna is a storied program, they have a bunch of Division I players on that roster,” said Rye head coach Steve Lennon. “The game was a lot closer than it seemed, but we just went on one of those runs.” Those runs, something the Garnets have been producing lately, has largely been birthed out of the unselfish play of Rye’s offense. On Saturday, nine different Garnets found the back of the net, with Kian McCarthy leading the way with five of his own. “It’s really started to become a trend,” explained Lennon. “Most games we are going to have lot of contributors with one or two guys breaking out, but a lot of people have stepped up into that role.”

THE REVIEW • June 10, 2022 • 9

The Garnets will be hoping to mount a well-rounded attack on Wednesday against a Garden City team whose size and athleticism have made them a handful all season. In their regional finals game against Comsewogue, the Trojans (17-2) used that combination to come away with a 9-6 win. “They’re probably the best overall team we’ve faced so far, in regards to their depth, they have really talented guys at every position which can create matchup nightmares,” said Lennon. “We can’t decide on a style of play, we’re going to have to go out and adapt.” Ultimately, however, Lennon hopes that Rye’s early-season battles against teams like Briarcliff, Ridgefield and Mamaroneck will have prepared the Garnets for state playoff tests. Lennon also noted that controlling possession, which has been a given for the Garnets and face-off specialist Johnny Hartzell, won’t be a certainty on Wednesday given that the Spartans will have All-American Jack Cascadden going opposite Hartzell. “[Cascadden] is one of the best face-off guys in the country, he’s big, he’s strong and he’s a grinder,” said Lennon. “But Johnny is quicker and that matchup could be interesting.” The Class B state semifinal is scheduled for June 8, 5:30 p.m., after press time. The best

EXERCISE for WOMEN OVER 65

It’s no secret that as people age it often gets more difficult to move freely, but consider this statistic: 1 in 4 women over 65 is unable to walk two blocks or climb a flight of stairs, according to a new study from researchers at UC San Diego published in the journal JAMA Network Open. Light-intensity exercise like walking and gardening can help preserve older women’s ability to live free of mobility disability. “All movement counts if you want to maintain mobility, not just moderate-to-vigorous exercise,” said first author Nicole Glass, a doctoral candidate in the San Diego State University/UC San Diego joint doctoral program in public health. Researchers found that women who spent the most time performing light-intensity physical activity had a 46% lower risk of mobility loss compared to women who participated in lower levels of physical activity. Similar results were observed among white, Black and Latina women. Women with and without obesity also reduced their risk of mobility disability, but the benefit was strongest among women with a body mass index of less than 30. Light-intensity physical activity is often overlooked as a form of exercise, said co-author John Bellettiere, professor of epidemiology at UC San Herbert Diego’s Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. Light-intensity ac-

tivity includes things like walking from the car to the store, getting up and making a cup of tea, or standing and emptying the dishwasher. “These movements accumulate,”Bellettiere said. Current activity guidelines for Americans do not consider light-intensity activities, which don’t cause a person to breathe heavily or sweat, he said. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults who are generally fit with no limiting health conditions should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week, or an equivalent combination of moderateand vigorous-intensity activity. For many older adults those suggested guidelines are out of reach, said senior author Andrea LaCroix, professor and chief of the division of epidemiology at UC San Diego’s Wertheim School. Perhaps the guidelines need to take into account that the energy cost of movement increases with age, she said. This study may help shift the paradigm. “The beauty of this study is that it takes this [the increased effort of exercise as a person ages] into account, and gives older women credit for the movement they do,” Bellettiere said. “Light-intensity activity is beneficial. It increases mobility.” Study participants wore a research-grade accelerometer, but anyone who can afford a fitness tracking wearable can keep track of their movement. “Once you are aware of your movement, you have a tendency to increase it,” Bellettiere said. “Every move you make is beneficial. It helps you move more, which is critical to maintaining your independence. Keep moving,” Glass said.

A great(?) time for sports LIVE MIKE Mike Smith

What a time to be a New York sports fan, huh? The Yankees and Mets are both humming, the Rangers are—as of press time—two wins away from the Stanley Cup Finals and people seem generally enthusiastic about the futures of both the Jets and the Giants franchises. The Big Apple has become a city of good vibes and positivity, a place where the future looks bright and the majority of fans can realistically envision a world in which one—or more–of their teams can lay claim to a world title. This is not the New York I’ve come to know. For a city that likes to think of itself as the center of the universe, it’s been an awful long time since New York fans have had a lot to crow about. Sure there have been a few titles over past 15 years—two for the Giants, one for the Yanks— but I’m having a hard time remembering the last time when the majority of our team engendered

feeling of optimism. Part of that is circumstantial, obviously. If you take away those two championship years, the Giants—record-wise—have been one of the worst franchises in the NFL in the last two decades. Even in those two marches to the Lombardi Trophy, you never thought you were rooting for a team that was destined for prolonged success, just a group that managed to get hot at the right time. For the Yankees, all the swagger and attitude their fans seemed to find during that run in the late-1990s and early-2000s was replaced by a sortof Mets-like fatalism, the sense of “Sure we won 100 games this year, but we’re bound to lose in the playoffs.” For sure, some of that negativity persists; many fans are demanding that the Yanks cut ties with underperforming players like Joey Gallo and Aaron Hicks, but as the team continues to find ways to win, even those niggling complaints feel muted. But here’s the thing about being a New York sports fan; we’ve learned that all that optimism and goodwill can be quite short-lived.

Just look at the Knicks! 15 months ago, the rejuvenated Knicks were the toast of the town, a playoff team with a bonafide star in Julius Randle and the chance to be a relevant Eastern Conference contender for the next few years. Now? The less said the better. So sure, fans are high on the future of the Jets and Giants now, but what happens when Kayvon Thibodeaux’s injury doesn’t heal so quickly or Zach Wilson doesn’t take the leap forward that we’re expecting. Will Mets’ fans fall out of love with Buck Showalter if the team’s injuries finally catch up to it during a mid-summer swoon? How much rope does Brian Cashman have left if the Rays—or the Jays—make a run in the AL East? I’m not so concerned about seeing how our teams will react to adversity, I’m interested in seeing what the fans do when those speed bumps that materialize during a season eventually crop up. We’re just not used to winning anymore. We’re always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
