Westchester to break ground on LGBTQ+ senior housing project Westchester County Executive George Latimer joined members of Westchester County’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center, Monadnock Development and HANAC to announce Westchester’s first LGBTQ+ friendly housing development that will bring 140 units of affordable senior housing to downtown White Plains. It will also include a larger space for The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center to continue to support its advocacy, education

and health programs. “This partnership will lead to the creation of a safer space for everyone, not just for LGBTQ+ people,” Latimer said. “We want our Westchester neighbors, no matter what age they are, to know this County is inclusive, their identity is accepted and they can make a home here. Affordable housing has been a priority for my administration and we want to reach all corners

Hochul signs voting rights bill into law Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday, at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, signed the landmark John. R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York into law cementing New York state’s place as a national leader on voting rights and fulfilling a key part of the governor’s 2022 State of the State agenda. The governor signed the bill alongside Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, State Sen. Zellnor Myrie, Assemblymember Latrice Walker, president of the NAACP New York State Conference Dr. Hazel N. Dukes and key voting rights advocates. “At a time when the very foundation of our democracy is under threat, New York is leading the nation with new laws protecting the fundamental right to vote,” Governor Hochul said. “Today, we honor the work of the late Congressman John Lewis and activists

like Medgar Evers as we make meaningful changes to our laws that enfranchise voters and ensure the voices of the people are heard in our democracy. Where the federal government fails to act, New York will continue to step up and lead the way: we did it with abortion protections, we did it with gun safety reforms, and I’m so proud to say we are doing it again with voting rights.” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, “The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York will expand and codify voter protections, empower citizens at the ballot box, and promote accountability among elected officials. I am proud that New York is standing as a true bastion of voting rights despite the anti-democratic rollbacks being set forth by Republicans across the nation.”

Legislation S.1046-E/A.6678-E will encourage participation in voting by all eligible voters by ensuring that barriers to accessing the polls are removed. In particular, members of racial, ethnic, and language-minority groups will now be protected by new measures that will ensure they have an equal opportunity to vote in the State of New York. “The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York will expand and codify voter protections, empower citizens at the ballot box, and promote accountability among elected officials,” said Senate Majority Leader Andrea-Stewart Cousins. “I am proud that New York is standing as a true bastion of voting rights despite the anti-democratic rollbacks being set forth by Republicans across the nation.”

BOL celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month On Monday, the Westchester County Board of Legislators commemorated LGBTQ+ Pride Month with a virtual ceremony paying tribute to two important voices for the LGBTQ+ community—writer Hugh Ryan and advocate Jeffrey Guard. Board Chair Catherine Borgia started off the observance saying, “Westchester Pride’s mission this year was to provide a space for healing, connection, and celebration as we come out of a long and challenging pandemic. But Pride Month also comes at an uncertain time for the LGBTQ+ community, with the specter of the Supreme Court overturning hard-won rights such as the right to marry, to reproductive health, and to protection against discrimination.” Nonetheless we have two wonderful honorees to recognize—Hugh Ryan and Jeffrey Guard—who share a common goal: to use their love of writing to reveal and preserve the stories, histories and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.” Legislator MaryJane Shimsky presented the first proclamation to Irvington native, Hugh Ryan. She said, “It is exciting to honor someone who has so uniquely created a context for what it means to be LGBTQ+—author, historian and curator, Hugh Ryan … A people needs to understand their history, where they are now, and where they are going in order to understand who they are. Hugh Ryan is a dynamic chronicler of the LGBTQ+ experience through his acclaimed literary and exhibition work. He has unearthed ‘fossils’ of information that validate and connect the LGBTQ+ community’s present with its past in the New York metropolitan area and even right here in Irvington.”

In a video message, Ryan expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying, “Growing up in Irvington, I came of age surrounded by the rich and deep history of the Rivertowns. My excellent public education helped me create new scholarship around LGBTQ lives.” “I thank the Board for bestowing this honor upon me, especially in this moment of upheaval and uncertainty when so much progress we have achieved seems threatened. To be embraced by the places we have called home, what more could any of us want?” The board declared June 14, 2022 “Hugh Ryan Day” in Westchester County. Chair Catherine Borgia presented the second proclamation to Jeffrey Guard, director of Marketing and Communications for The LOFT. She said, “In deciding who we should honor for Pride Month, I did not have to think twice. I knew that my Croton neighbor, Jeffrey Guard -- the heart and soul of The LOFT -- was the perfect choice. As Director of Communications and Marketing, Jeffrey plays a crucial role using The LOFT’s media resources to connect the LGBTQ+ community with the vast array of programs and services they offer.” Guard accepted the honor with these words, “My purpose in life is to do whatever I can to empower the LGBTQ+ community. I am truly blessed to do that at The LOFT, the largest provider of programs and services for the LGBTQ+ community in Westchester County.” “To live in a county as affirming as Westchester and to have allies like Chairwoman Borgia is something we in the community do not take for granted.

You see, the place where I grew up was, and is, the exact opposite of Westchester. I know what it is to struggle to be treated with a basic level of decency, much less expect to be treated with equality. With this honor, it sends a clear message to our commu-

nity that Westchester County supports, empowers, and believes in the LGBTQ+ community without reservation.” The Board declared June 15, 2022 “Jeffrey Guard Day” in Westchester County.

of the County with this opportunity. It will address the pressing needs of the LGBTQ+ community while expanding the vital services provided by The LOFT.” The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center will occupy more than 7,000 square feet of a newly constructed building on the Southwesterly corner of Court and Quarropas Streets in White Plains. HANAC and Monadnock will own and operate the housing components and work with The LOFT to ensure all seniors feel welcomed. While the housing is not exclusively for members of the LGBTQ+ community, this is the first housing complex in the County that is friendly and supportive to LGBTQ+ residents with services being provided by the LOFT at the community facility space to assist with healthcare and more. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force estimates there are over three million LGBTQ+ seniors in the United States with that number expected to double by 2030. “There was a time in our history, in the not so distant past, when members of the LGBTQ+ community weren’t living long enough to need senior housing,” said Judy Troilo, executive director of The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center. “There was also so much fear associated with identifying as LGBTQ+ publicly. This housing today is a symbol of how far we have come. Granted, we still have a long way to go, but this is a tremendous day. Our long-standing goal of providing Westchester’s LGBTQ+ elders with safe, affordable, and affirming housing has arrived! In addition, our brand-new center will include space for our growing programs, and a home for a partner provider to offer medical and mental Health services specifically to LGBTQ+

The legislation addresses: • Voter Dilution. Prohibits methods of election that eliminate the voting strength of a protected class and establishes legal protections for violations. • Voter Suppression. Prohibits election-related laws and practices from being implemented in ways that deny members of a protected class the right to vote and establishes legal protections for violations. • Voter Intimidation, Deception or Obstruction. Prohibits acts of intimidation, deception, or obstruction that impact the ability of New Yorkers to access their right to vote and establishes legal protec-

individuals and families here in Westchester County. Having all these incredible services under one roof is truly groundbreaking and will no doubt become a model for others to follow nationally.” Chair of the Westchester County LGBTQ+ Advisory Board Christopher Oldi said, “The addition of much needed senior affordable housing is a paramount concern for the community. Oftentimes, LGBTQ+ seniors are discriminated against or ostracized. We want our aging population to know they are welcome here in Westchester County. The Westchester County LGBTQ+ Advisory Board applauds the partnership between The LOFT and HANAC Development to construct senior affordable housing in downtown White Plains. The Board is so pleased that The LOFT will find itself in a new space, more accessible to public transportation, with the ability to reach an even wider swath of the queer community in Westchester (and beyond) than it already does. The Advisory Board looks forward to continuing to collaborate with The LOFT and HANAC as they embark on this incredible journey together!” Since the start of Latimer’s administration, nearly 4,800 units of affordable housing have been built, under construction or in the pipeline in Westchester County including Greenburgh, New Rochelle, Harrison and Yonkers. This downtown White Plains development is slated to be completed by 2024. “Diversity produces vibrant communities,” said White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach. “White Plains is a special place to live, work and play due in large part to its diversity. The project developed by the LOFT, Monadnock Development and HANAC embodies the best of the city. The addition of affordable senior housing and a space for a beloved community organization in the City of White Plains is a win-win.” tions for violations. • Expanded Language Assistance. Requires election-related language assistance beyond what is required by the federal Voting Rights Act. • Preclearance. Establishes a state analogue to the now dormant “section 5 preclearance” of the federal Voting Rights Act, requiring covered jurisdictions to “preclear” any changes to certain important election-related laws and policies before they can implement them. Under the new law, covered jurisdictions seeking to make a change to a range of election measures will first need to have those changes reviewed to ensure they will not violate the voting rights of a protected class. Covered jurisdictions are those with a history of civil or voting rights violations.

CPW's Bridge School students receive state award On Thursday, June 9, four students from Cerebral Palsy of Westchester's Bridge School program were awarded the Triple "C" Award, on behalf of the New York State Attorney General's Office. The Triple "C" Awards program acknowledges hard-working students in New York for their commitment, character and courage. The short event was held at CPW's Bridge School in Rye Brook and family members of the recipients joined the celebration via Zoom. Barry Wasser, Bridge School

principal, presented each individual with a certificate and each nominator said a few words about their chosen awardee. State Attorney General Letita James recognizes students statewide for their milestone achievements through this honor each year. For more than 20 years, the Office of the Attorney General has celebrated many of New York's most remarkable individuals with the presentation of this award, which recognizes a student's courage in

meeting challenges ahead; a commitment to bettering themselves, their school, and community; and their strength of character in achieving their goals. Aimee V.R., Ever M.B., Sammy T., and Jose A. were nominated by CPW Bridge School teachers, therapists and leadership staff as the recipients of the Triple C Award due to the commitment, character and courage each of them exhibits in the classroom, and this past year, exhibited online during virtual learning. These four students

have risen to face the challenges caused by the chaos and uncertainty of the pandemic. The Bridge School at Rye Brook, a division of Cerebral Palsy of Westchester, is a special education center, serving students with multiple disabilities. It offers a comprehensive program that connects families, students, and educational professionals to help each student reach their academic potential and discover what the possibilities are for them beyond the school setting.

Over 30 Harrison restaurants and merchants prepared their offerings for Taste of Harrison held on Sunday, May 15. Library supporters, residents and anyone who was hungry and made a modest donation to the library, were able to savor the delectable fare and enjoy the camaraderie and friendly faces offered by the participating restaurants in downtown Harrison. “We’re very excited to bring back Taste of Harrison for 2022,” said Raymond Villani, Harrison Public Library Foundation trustee and event chair. “It was a fun way to raise money for the Harrison Public Library while drawing attention to the many great restaurants in town. From Blooming Buds near West Street, to Harrison Market on Oakland, everyone enjoyed a mile of smiles, great food, and community uplift while supporting the library. Many thanks to the

restaurants, volunteers and residents who come together to make the day a success.” Restaurants and merchants who donate prizes and contributing sponsors underwrite the costs of the event so that all proceeds go to support the library through the Harrison Public Library Foundation. The Avalon Harrison was the lead sponsor for Taste of Harrison. Also sponsoring were DeCicco & Sons Markets and Harrison Meadows Country Club. A cadre of HPLF volunteers made it all possible. The annual event took place from 12 -3 p.m. on a beautiful Sunday in downtown Harrison. There was a free shuttle bus available to assist with going up and down Halstead Avenue. For more information on how to donate or volunteer to help at the next event, email harrisonlibraryfoundation@gmail.com.

Foundation gifts $247K to New Rochelle library At their annual meeting Tuesday night the non-profit New Rochelle Public Library Foundation voted to provide the library with $247,799 to help keep the city's libraries vibrant, up-to-date, and able to serve the diverse New Rochelle community. The money will be used to support both the Huguenot Childrens' Library and the Main Branch downtown, providing summer programs, workshops and STEAM programs for toddlers at the HCL and, at the Main Branch, technology upgrades, programs, and fixtures and furnishings for the newly-renovated second floor. Among the upgrades the money will cover are technology enabling Interactive Learning, increased

capacity and functionality for servers, and digital signage throughout the library to better inform patrons about programs and services. Special programs and projects supported by the grant will include a Community Cookbook Project, "Let's Go Legos" afterschool Lego Club for elementary school children, and the very popular Museum Pass Program, as well as Teen Maker-Space equipment and other programs that expand creative options for the teen center's Digital Media Lab. In addition, $114,224 will be used to meet the community match requirements of a NY State Construction Grant that will completely renovate the Main Library's third floor. New Rochelle Public Library Foundation, NR-

PLF, President Chris Selin credited the Foundation's successful year to "so many friends in the community and our committed Board of Directors, all of whom give so much of their time and energy to support our Library." She pointed out that among the programs supported by this year's grant will be performances by The Sandbox Theater. "Both my granddaughters have participated over the years in plays at Sandbox," she said, "and they have both gained, not only in confidence but many ways, because of their experience." Established in 1993, the NRPL Foundation has raised more than $3 million for the New Rochelle Public Library. In addition, stepping in as a matching

funder, the Foundation has been able to leverage its support to bring in an additional $1.5 million in New York State grants over the past 10 years. To accomplish its mission the NRPLF depends on community volunteers who are passionate about libraries and who devote their energies and lend their special talents to grow the NRPL and its network. NRPLF President Chris Selin says "Each of our Board members bring special expertise, life experience, and talents that will enable the NRPL to remain vibrant and relevant to today's demands," Selin said. To find out more about the NRPL Foundation go to www.nrplfoundation.org.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

We need to set an example in protecting abortion rights To the Editor, In the wake of the impending likelihood that Roe v. Wade will be overturned by the Supreme Court, it is all the more important than ever that we protect abortion rights in New York state and in our local communities. That includes making sure people who go to abortion clinics are safe and do not fear for their lives when they need medical assistance.

Recently, three men by the names of Christopher Moscinski, Matthew Connelly and William Goodman went to a clinic and refused to leave and intimidated and pressured patients and staff. They were arrested and found guilty of criminal trespassing in March of this year but they are awaiting their sentence. It is my belief that they should receive the full sentence for their crimes, which would be three months in jail and a fine of $500. If they were to be let off with minimal or no

punishment, then it would be a waste of everyone’s time, energy, and money … and even more of a waste when the same thing would occur a few months or even weeks later. These men have been arrested before and they are part of a group called Red Rose Rescue that aims to attack and terrorize abortion clinics and the people who go to them. We should not disregard the choice that lies before us: to uphold our community’s standards of safety and the right to private medical appointments or to sit back

and let our justice system wither away while we make no move to support it. We have a responsibility to keep people safe and to foster an environment where violence and browbeating are not tolerated. We must fully sentence people like Moscinski, Connelly and Goodman who have committed multiple crimes and will not stop without intervention. Kate Oxton, Mamaroneck

Crossing the finish line Well, we finally made it! As high schools all over the area have bid farewell to their graduating seniors over the last week, it means that we’ve officially made it through another school year. But for many high school students—even ones who still have time left to roam the hallways of their respective institutions—this year was a special one. For the first time since 2020, this year has been—for better or worse—normal. Sure, the threat of COVID-19 hasn’t completely dissipated. It’s still something we deal with every day on some level or another. But for high school students who have had their school—and sports experiences—upended over the last few years, the past year was about as close to normal as we could hope to get. For the first time since 2020, we had full sports seasons,

complete with sectional and state playoffs, fully packed indoor venues that (eventually) saw fans and players alike able to shed the masks that had become ubiquitous in the preceding months, it was— in a word—glorious. But it wasn’t just the reality of seeing sports return to normal that was so gratifying; it was the way the student-athletes responded to the chance to go out with their minds free of Covid implications. I got a distinct sense that the troubles we’ve had over the last two years helped to put sports in perspective for many of these young athletes. Sure, sports are still important, but I think the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic also gave students a sense of perspective that is quite often missing at these levels. They saw how precarious everything was, and when they finally got the chance to go out and play, there was an air of joy about everything that I feel is too often overlooked. Perhaps this was most evident with Bronxville’s run to the state title in girls lacrosse earlier

this month. The Broncos’ seniors had been to the state finals once before, losing in 2019. By all accounts, that freshman class of Broncos was one that was supposed to compete for—and possibly win—state titles every year in their high school careers. But then we all know what happened. The 2020 spring season was wiped off the books, and when the team finally got out on the field for the 2021 campaign, Covid protocols meant no state tournament would be held. But this spring, the Broncos seniors finally got the chance to bring home a state title and they made the most of that opportunity, going out as champions with a win over Skaneateles to close out their high school careers. I’ve seen emotional celebrations before, but this one hit differently; there was an general acknowledgment by the players of everything the team had been through; on and off the field, mostly in terms of situations that were out of their control. They relished every moment

Bronxville lacrosse players celebrate their New York State Championship win at SUNY Cortland on June 11. After two years of trials and tribulations, the Broncos’ seniors were able to close out their career with an elusive state title.

of that celebration and captain Kiki Tormey encapsulated the moment perfectly. “[After 2019], we knew we would be back here, we just didn’t know it would take so long,” she said with a smile. “But to be able to come out and get the win, this is an amazing feeling.”

But even for those athletes and teams whose seasons might not have ended with state titles, I think this year was by and large a wonderful learning experience. Scholastic athletics are supposed to teach youngsters how to deal with adversity, how to face problems with tenacity and resolve.

And I think all of our high school students have learned those lessons in spade these last few years. Now I can’t wait to see them face the future with that same perseverance.

Junu Moon connects with a punch against Jamaine Labranche on June 18. Moon, a personal trainer from New Rochelle, won his bout on Saturday.

Ari Robinson from Champs Boxing Club squares off against Jacob Spence from the Suffolk PAL on June 18 at the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle. Champs Boxing Club hosted a 14-bout event at the venue last weekend.

Champs back in the ring in New Rochelle By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor On Saturday, June 18, the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle played host to a night of pugilistic bouts, as Champs Boxing Club held its second event of the year at the organization’s Mascaro Clubhouse. Champs—located on Division Street in New Rochelle—held its first 2022 event at the Boys & Girls Club in March, marking the first time in over 20 years that the venue had housed a boxing card. Like that initial show, Saturday’s event was comprised of 14 amateur bouts featuring boxers from all over the tri-state area. “It’s going as good as it can go with the Boys and Girls Club,” said Champs’ owner Ryan O’Leary. “We have the same values, we’re doing the same thing for the community, so it’s really been a great match for us.” Chris Flores, a New Rochelle High School student, got the chance to step into the ring for his first sanctioned bout on Saturday, representing Champs at 140 pounds and earning a unanimous decision win over Richie Vasquez from Blue Boy Boxing Club. Flores said he picked up the sport a little over a year ago when he followed a friend to the New Rochelle gym and quickly became hooked. “It was right after quarantine ended and my friend was going to the gym so I came along,” he said. “I knew right away that this was something I wanted to do.” Champs trainer Ryan O’Leary explained that stories like Flores’ are not rare, and that he’s seen a boom of interest in the gym as the nation moves past the dark days of the pandemic. “Before quarantine, the gym was doing good, but now, afterwards, it’s been

doing fantastic; think what happened was that people were sitting at home, they were getting bored, getting unhealthy and they were wondering ‘what if I have to be stuck here even longer?’” said O’Leary. “So now they’re spending their time in

the community or the gym, and Chris is one of those kids who has really applied himself.” Flores said getting the chance to step through the ropes in front of a crowd for his first amateur bout was a thrilling

experience and provided some affirmation that he’s been training the right way over the last year. "It’s good to get this experience," he said. . "Just to see what it feels like to be in there.”

Flores’ gym-mate, Oliver Patrouch, also won his bout—topping Jamaal Muhammed of Blue Boy BC at 165 pounds. Patrouch, a 25-year-old EMT from White Plains, said that he fell in love with boxing, in large, part, because of the sense of gritty camaraderie the sport engenders. “For me, it’s all the people,” said Patrouch. “You look at everyone here and everyone’s a fireman, a police officer, a garbageman, it’s great.” Saturday’s boxers were not the only Champs’ fighters in action last week however, as the club also sent four fighters to Thursday night’s Ring Masters finals at Madison Square Garden. The club went 1-3 on the night—with Cathy Jimenez scoring a victory—and three of the fighters will have one more chance to win the double-elimination tournament at an event next month. O’Leary believes that his charges have the ability and the will to make the most of this next challenge. “Not to toot our own horn, but every year we have a Ring Masters or a Golden Gloves tournament, we expect to be at the Garden,” he said. “I think the toughest thing for [our fighters] is that it’s such a big venue and so important that it’s sometimes devastating to go there and take a loss. But we do our best to make them understand that it’s just a boxing match like any other.” The Ring Masters double elimination finals will be held on July 23 at John’s Boxing Gym in the Bronx. Champs Boxing Club is currently looking to cement a date for their next event at the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle, hoping to put on regular shows every two months.
