County offering bivalent boosters to children aged 5-11 The Westchester County Department of Health is offering Pfizer COVID-19 boosters for children ages 5-11. Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler said: “I encourage parents to schedule their children’s boosters as soon as possible. We anticipate an uptick in COVID-19 cases after Halloween and through the upcoming holidays, just as we experienced the past few years. These boosters will extend your family’s protection against serious COVID-19 symptoms, and help you avoid exposing more vulnerable family and friends.” Flu season is here, and families can also schedule flu vaccines at the same time at the Health De-

partment Clinic in White Plains. The Westchester County Health Department will offer both the flu vaccine and pediatric COVID-19 bivalent boosters by appointment, as follows: • Fridays, Nov. 3 and 18, 1 p.m.3 p.m., at 134 Court St., White Plains • Thursday, Nov. 3, Yonkers Riverfront Library, 2 p.m.-6:30 p.m. • Monday, Nov. 14, 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at 134 Court St., White Plains • December Friday appointments will be added later, so please check back. Go to www.westchestergov. com/health to book your vaccine visit.

“Combining vaccines is safe and it is more convenient to schedule both at the same time,” Amler added. “Children often receive multiple shots at once, and you are much less likely to skip a vaccine if both are given together. Vaccines for flu and COVID-19 offer the best protection we have to fight these diseases, so the sooner you get vaccinated, the better.” In the U.S., flu activity is usually highest between December and February, but can last into May. One flu vaccine now provides protection all season long and can prevent illness or reduce the severity of flu symptoms. The vaccine becomes fully effective after about two weeks.

Ensuring residents aren’t left out in the cold, and can save some much needed dollars during the winter months, County Executive George Latimer proposed—and the Board of Legislators subsequently passed—a suspension of sales tax on home energy costs. The exemption will run from Dec. 1-Feb. 28. “Westchester County Government is constantly looking to find ways to make the lives of residents a little easier,” Latimer said. “This winter, heating your home will now cost you a little less. As we all face rising costs in our daily lives, this suspension of certain sales tax will add extra dollars to the wallets of those who call Westchester home.” The sales tax suspension covers home heating oil, propane, natural gas, electric, coal and wood for residential heating purposes and covers homeowners as well as rental units. Landlords and renters will be eligible depending on the structure of the unit’s heat and electric use. The initiative is administered by the state Department of Taxation and Finance; the vendors will not be assessing sales tax as directed by the state. The sales tax will automatically be taken off the bill.

If you are being charged sales tax for any home energy item starting Dec. 1 please contact the county. This measure is in addition to the myriad of actions taken by the Latimer administration and the Board of Legislators to combat rising inflationary costs nationwide. Those actions include the capping of sales tax on gasoline purchases, waiving of fees at certain parks and pools and—most notably—suspending fares on Bee-Line buses for the summer months. Board of Legislators Chairwoman Catherine Borgia said: “With a low fuel supply and temperatures expected to be colder than usual, home heating costs will be through the roof this winter. Thankfully through the County’s home energy cost reduction relief, more families will stay warm and keep their heads above water.” Latimer made the announcement at the home of Omar Lopez and Grace O’Shaughnessy in Ossining. “Thanks to the leadership of County Executive Latimer and the Board of Legislators our family will have an easier time keeping our home warm for the winter while saving much needed money at the same time,” Lopez said.

Harrison approves cancer infusion center The Harrison Planning Board has approved the application by 1 West Red Oak LLC to construct a 21,875-square-foot cancer infusion center at 1 West Red Oak Plaza in Harrison. The infusion center will be operated by Mt. Sinai Hospital. Attorney Albert J. Pirro, Jr. of Abrams Fensterman, LLP in White Plains made the presentation before the Planning Board, noting that, “The 1 West Red Oak Medical Office Building will offer ambulatory medical services and comprehensive infusion services for patients with both cancer and benign conditions. Individualized care plans are designed with different treatment protocols and reflects the unique nature of this facility in serving the region.” An ambulatory infusion therapy enables patients to decrease or totally avoid hospital or nursing home stays and resume normal routines and work behaviors while still treating the illness. Providing medications intravenously, these protocols are typically applied to serious or chronic conditions where medications cannot be given orally. Pirro advised the board that, “Infusion therapy may be needed for a variety of cancers and benign conditions, including rheumatoid arthri-

tis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, asthma, immune deficiency, gout, migraines, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, lupus, etc. The infusions are used to provide chemotherapy for cancer, and other agents for other conditions which are treated, including antibiotics, anti-coagulation therapy, anti-emetics, hydration, and nutrients such as IV/ IM.” The infusion center team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, and on-site pharmacists, who are fluent in multiple languages. In addition to the infusion treatment center, additional on-site services include radiology, lab services/inhalation respiratory, cardiology, EKG and a pharmacy for patients of the facility. In view of the fact that an average infusion takes 2-2.5 hours, the infusion center features private, comfortable infusion chairs, WiFi and flatscreen televisions. T:10" The environment at an ambulatory infusion center differs greatly from hospital infusion services. At an ambulatory facility, only staff and scheduled patients are permitted. As the economics of healthcare continue to direct medical strategies, outpatient infusion centers are now more common and have a limited number of patients per day.

Lifting Up Westchester announces 6th annual Student Essay Contest

Lifting Up Westchester, a non-profit agency committed to helping individuals experiencing homelessness and hunger achieve self-sufficiency, announces their sixth annual high school student essay contest. Open to all students attending school in Westchester in the 7th to 12th grades, this year students are invited to think about the connections between, and misperceptions about, mental health and homelessness and how we might end the stigmas attached to both. The essay contest was established in 2017 in memory of Beth Massey Rubens, a lifelong

teacher, tutor, and mentor who had a love for language arts. Mental health impacts how we think, feel and act and how we cope with life. Mental health also influences how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Did you know that family illness, job loss, divorce, not doing well in school, being bullied, hunger, poor housing and becoming unhoused are just some of the things that can trigger mental health issues? This can result in emotions such as anxiety, depression, or loneliness. “There are many stigmas and stereotypes

attached to people experiencing both mental health challenges and homelessness,” said Anahaita Kotval, CEO of Lifting Up Westchester. “For example, there is a myth that mental health issues are a primary reason people become homeless. We hope this contest helps students understand more about both issues and share their thoughts on how we can do better to educate ourselves and work towards a better future for everyone.” First, second and third place cash prizes will be awarded in each of the three grade groups: 7th and 8th grades, 9th and 10th grades, and

11th and 12th grades. An ESL category has also been established and any student from grades 7 through 12 can choose to enter the ESL category. First prize in each category is $500, second prize $250 and third prize $100. The contest kicks off Nov. 1, and students can enter through Feb. 17, 2023, at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced in early March 2023 and an awards ceremony will take place March 26. Students, teachers and parents can learn more about how the contest works and review the judging process and criteria by visiting Lifting Up Westchester’s website.

2022 Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame Dinner to be held Nov. 10 The inductees into the 2022 Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame will receive their trophies at a dinner on Nov. 10 at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle. The class of ‘22 will have a plaque on display in the first-floor gallery at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. “Westchester always has an outstanding pool of athletes to choose from, so making the final decisions can be quite challenging,” County Executive George Latimer said. “All of these candidates should be proud of their accomplishments and well-deserved recognition.” This year’s inductees are: · Thomas Avezzano, Sr. has spent more than 65 years working at Sprain Lake Golf Course in Yonkers, where he introduced countless people to golf through junior golf camps, clinics and private lessons. He created Halloween and Turkey Scrambles, which have endured for the past 15 and 25 years, respectively; and hosted Buick and Oldsmobile Scrambles for over a decade. Avezzano Sr. is also one of the longest-tenured pros in the Met PGA and the National PGA. · Ric Beardsley’s lacrosse career began at Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak. The high school All-American made the Syracuse University D1 team, was the USA U19 team captain and world champion, spent two years playing Major League Lacrosse and four years with National League Lacrosse. After playing professionally, Beardsley began coaching and lead the Syracuse Christian Brothers Academy to a NYS Championship in 2017. In 2021 he entered pro coaching with the Premiere Lacrosse League. Since 2005, he has run lacrosse camps and clinics all over the US and has become one of the top trainers in the country. · Frank Becerra, Jr. has been photographing high school, college and professional sports for the Journal News for more than 40 years. He has covered: Major League Baseball (including eight World Series); the National Football League (including three Super Bowls); the National Hockey League (including three Stanley Cup Finals); and the National Basketball Association (including numerous NBA Championships). His many awards include: The National Press

Photographers Association’s Region Two Photographer of the year in 1998 and 2021. · Ron Berlingo’s athletic career began as co-captain of the White Plains varsity football team, but a knee injury ended his football career at Springfield College in 1965. He then became an amateur boxer and was selected to represent New England in the National Golden Gloves. In 1978 Berlingo was involved in professional boxing as an assistant to promoter Momentum Enterprises and as a manager and trainer. Berlingo’s most prominent boxers were heavyweights Renaldo” Mister” Snipes, Carl “The Truth” Williams and Tony “TNT” Grano. Snipes and Williams fought for the Heavyweight Championship of the world three times. Snipes in 1981 and Williams in 1985 and 1989. Tony Grano won the NABF Heavyweight Championship in 2012. All three fought in the Westchester County Center and lived and trained in White Plains early in their careers. Snipes and Grano made their debut in the County Center. William’s 1984 main event in the County Center was for the largest purse in County Center’s history. Westchester County Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor said: “These spirited and dedicated individuals inspire everyone around them to be high achievers. Their enthusiasm is contagious, which makes them true leaders in their fields.” Since 1968, the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame has honored more than 200 outstanding professional and amateur men and women, living or deceased, who have gained prominence in their fields and who made substantial contributions to sports in Westchester County. Nominations for the Hall of Fame committee are solicited from the public. The nominees are reviewed, and the committee selects those who best meet or exceed the Hall of Fame’s criteria. The Sports Hall of Fame is sponsored by Westchester County Parks with support from the Westchester Parks Foundation. For tickets to the awards dinner and more information about the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame, please contact Kevin Cook at 231-4564 or kdc2@westchestergov.com.

The pitfalls of Friday nights You can’t win ‘em all; that’s something I’ve learned the hard way throughout the years. But when I talk about the inevitability of failure, I’m not taking about the triumphs and tragedies of an athlete—or team’s—season. I’m talking about my own (in)ability to pick the right games to cover. Being a one-man show here, my coverage scope is limited. And when covering a sport like football, which is played only one or two days a week, my limitations become that much more apparent. So when you have five high school playoff games to cover on a Friday night, you just have to make your best educated guess as to which game is going to be the most intriguing. And boy did I blow it last week. Deciding between two Class A playoff tilts last week, I found myself

caught between covering Rye vs. Pelham and Harrison vs. Mahopac. And I chose . . . poorly. Ultimately, I looked at the records and results of the teams and determined that Rye vs. Pelham would be the more competitive game with a richer storyline; two one-loss teams, one forced to go on the road due to a a tie-breaker loss, seemingly evenly matched. What more could you ask for on a Friday night? Harrison vs. Mahopac, on the other hand seemed like the kind of game that was a surefire win for the Huskies. It just goes to show you how much I know. The Garnets ended up trouncing the Pelicans in a laugher, not allowing a Pelham score until well after the game had been decided in the fourth quarter, while Harrison and Mahopac put on what might have been the best game of the week, with the Huskies edging the visitors 20-19 on a late touchdown run by Marco Citro. That game had everything; drama,

comebacks, high-stakes, and I felt foolish having overlooked it for the chance to see a game that was essentially decided by the end of the first half. Who could have guessed that a 4-3 Indians team would take the 8-1 Huskies down to the wire? Certainly not I, but it’s still one of the things you come to regret as a sportswriter after the fact. You never know when a game is going to exceed all expectations and turn into an instant classic; sure you can make a general guess based on a team’s past performances, but when you’re dealing with high school sports, that can really be an inexact science. So I’m already dreading the slate of games for this week because I’m sure there’s going to be a game that some town will talk about for years. But will I be there? That remains to be seen. Game Notes • Emily Yazzetti and Bella Basulto scored for Lakeland • The Hornets have won 14 straight titles • Lakeland will play Hoosick Falls on Sunday

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

Eventually, someone is going to knock Lakeland from its perch atop the Section I Field Hockey landscape. Unfortunately for Rye, it isn’t going to be this year. On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Hornets captured their 14th straight sectional title, winning the Class B title with a strong showing against challenger Rye. Although the No. 2 seed Garnets played evenly with the perennial power for most of the game, in the end it was simply muscle memory that allowed Lakeland to pull through. The Garnets and Hornets were locked in a scoreless battle for the first half, but it was Lakeland that would strike first, when Bella Basulto converted on a penalty corner early in the

third quarter. The Hornets were able to add to that lead in the fourth when, with a one-player advantage, Basulto found Emily Yazzetti to make the game 2-0. It was all the scoring Lakeland would need as they’d go on to win by the same score. Putting a stamp on nearly a decade and a half of dominance in Section I field hockey

Although trailing Lakeland might sound like a daunting prospect to most teams, Rye never lost its confidence, said Rye freshman goalie Chloe Holden. When the two teams squared off in September, Rye was able to rebound twice from one-goal deficits to come away with a 2-2 tie. “We knew we could play with them,” said Holden.

Rye’s Chloe Holden makes a save on Oct. 29. The Freshman stopped 12 shots on the day.

“We never stopped playing hard.” Holden was spectacular in goal for the Garnets—who had a 15-6 disadvantage on penalty corners on the day— making 12 saves against an explosive Hornets’ attack. Holden said that although the loss was a disappointing way to end the season, the Garnets (17-2-1) have nothing to hang their heads

about. “They’ve worked so hard and they left everything out on the field,” she said. “As a freshman, I know how hard the seniors have worked, how hard everyone has worked. Even though we lost, I’m so happy for everyone that we made it this far.” Lakeland, which figures to be strong again next year, with just just two seniors on

its roster, will continue its season on Sunday, Nov. 6, when it takes on Section II champion Hoosick Falls at Mahopac High School. The Panthers have won backto-back sectional titles and recorded a 3-2 win over Johnstown High School on Sunday. Contact: sports@hometwn.com
