Salute to the Salem High School
Class bids farewell to SHS in school’s 136th grad ceremony By Caleb Brubaker Staff Writer reporter@ thesalemnewsonline.com
Friday evening sported an excellent spring overcast but not a drop of rain wept on these graduates for this joyous occasion. Hundreds filed into the stands at the football field to celebrate the momentous event, an event that might have seemed impossible to many of these graduates a year ago. The advent of COVID19 will always be an overarching memory that will be a part of their high school memories and the challenges they faced throughout the past year; masks, social distancing and remote learning were all introduced to these students as juniors as they worked hard to develop from children into young adults. The words of valedictorian Brecklyn Holtz resonated. Her words began the way such a speech might, “I wanted to start out with saying that I am absolutely honored that I am standing here today,” she said. A sentiment that salutatorian Tyler Sebaugh introduced in his own speech, minutes before. Holtz also addressed what she described as the guest as the guest star of the past year. “Corona, you really did your best, but here we are, you tried to kick us town,
take away our events and even keep us from attending school,” she said before following with an affirmation of strength. “But we’re stronger than you,” said Holtz. “We made it through a shutdown, a hybrid schedule and a mask mandate, but us, the class of 2021, we never stopped. Every single day we did what was necessary to get our diploma and try to have a little fun in the mix. And here we are after everything we’ve been through. We did it,” she said. Holtz pointed out how much she and her peers have grown over past year. “I spent a lot of this year struggling with the idea that things weren’t normal and there wasn’t any sign of anything changing in the future. Ten years of normal school and the last two were so hectic that I could barely remember my own age at the end of it,” said Holtz. “Adaptation and change was a requirement this year and most of us are going to hold the values that we’ve learned for the rest of our lives,'' said Holtz. Valedictorian Monica Jessen, spoke in her speech, not of endings but beginnings. “As we graduate, remember that today is a celebration for the beginning of the rest of our lives. It

Photos by Catherine Wynn is the beginning of new adventures, new opportunities, new friends and so much more. Whether you plan to go to college, attend a trade school, enlist in the military or enter the workforce, we all have an adventure waiting for us,” said Jessen. “So, fellow classmates don’t be afraid of what lies ahead of us, be excited. Be excited because we did it, we graduated.” Valedictorian Martin
Brian Ditch speaks to Counselor Chelsie Fulton after he receives his diploma.
Jones said, “From this point on, our lives will change in ways that they have never changed before. We will no longer be with the same people we have been with for the last four years. Some of which we have been with since kindergarten. We will all be moving on and many of us will be moving away. No matter what we move on to all of our lives will fundamentally change,” said Jones. Jones encour-
aged his fellow students and their families to embrace the changes ahead. Valedictorians and salutatorians have the option to speak or only be recognized during the ceremony. Salem High School Class of 2021 honor graduates include valedictorians, Ryon Coursen, Monica Jessen, Martin Jones, Brecklyn Holtz and Isabella Knaack; and salutatorians, Amy Chen and Tyler
Seabaugh. Salem High School Principal Marty Anderson took a moment to recognize A+ program students, students entering the military, and students entering into careers through before Assistant Principal Clay Moody presented the class of 2021 to receive their diplomas. As each student filed through the line, smiles and cheers could be seen and heard.
Friends and family gathered in the circle drive of the high school to wish graduates well. Savannah Skaggs (middle) celebrates as she says goodbye to Salem High School.
The 136th Salem High School Graduation Ceremony was conducted at 7 p.m. May 21, 2021 at the football stadium.

Clinging to lasting memories - it will all be okay By Brecklyn Holtz Vickery Intern The Salem News The time has finally come for me to say goodbye to Salem High School. Whenever I began my freshman year, I began counting down the days until I would finally be done. I was expecting it to feel liberating, and free, as if I had just made it through an entire marathon. However, as the years turned to months, and the months turned into my last few days, I started clinging on to the last few memories I would be making. I think that my fear of letting go is mostly contributed to the pandemic, and having to let go of certain things long before I

was ever ready. Whenever school was released in March of my junior year, I knew that it was the beginning of a long list of changes that were to come. I didn’t expect it to last nearly as long as it has, but I knew that the world was about to be flipped upside down. I remember naively enjoying the lack of school for the first few weeks, and treating it more like a spring break than a serious issue. After a month or so of the same thing every single day, you begin to realize how much you take for granted. I never thought I would miss school, but there I was, yearning to be able to walk through the halls once again with my friends. As the end of

July approached, it hit me that the pandemic had shown no signs of halt, and my senior year was right around the corner. I was scared, and I didn’t know if I’d even be able to recognize the school I was going back to. The first time I was able to enter the school in months gave me a feeling of nostalgic recognition, like returning to a store you visited when you were a child. It didn’t feel the same, and the first week of school didn’t really help matters. I knew that it was all for the safety of the staff and my peers, but it felt so incredibly unfair. I spent 10 years before that point living normally, and at the end of it all, nothing was normal. I think the best part of this internship is the ability for the readers to watch my development as time progressed. As changes were thrown at me practically every week, I was able to express my opinions and process what was happening around me on a level greater than most. I grew up a lot this year, and I feel like an entirely differ-

ent person now that high school is over. I still hate change, but I don’t feel as anxious whenever it happens. I still wish that I had a normal senior year, but I get to cling on to the few good memories that still came from this year. I learned how to motivate myself and overcome difficulties. The pandemic sucked, to put it frankly, but through all of the heartache, I found a new confidence in myself as I enter the “real world.” I’m going to miss high school, and I’m going to miss seeing those I care about every single day. I hope the class of 2022 has an easier year, and I wish the incoming seniors the absolute best. I don’t know what the future has in store, since change seems to be a constant, but as I walked across that field on Friday, May 21, I knew that everything was going to be okay.
