Dear Friends: For over 90 years, The Salvation Army has been serving Grand Haven and North Ottawa County residents. We are guided by a simple mission: To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ while working to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Working with hundreds of community volunteers, we address: • Long term poverty and chronic unemployment. • Families in crisis or facing temporary emergencies. • Families and individuals in need of food or clothing. • Youth searching for meaning and mentoring through our character building programs. Last year we served 8,649 individuals through our services and programs. Providing a warm, welcoming and professional environment for our growing programs and services is a top priority of our leadership team. As a result, the Advisory Board of The Salvation Army of Grand Haven has decided now is the time to expand our current facilities at 310 N. Despelder. Over the next year, a group of dedicated community leaders will be working hard to raise $1.1 million in charitable gifts to expand our current facility so that we can continue to provide the highest quality services to those in need. We are now approaching our friends and supporters to seek your help in providing for our community’s most vulnerable residents. Please join us in supporting the Doing the Most Good campaign as we seek to safeguard and care for our neighbors in our community. Sincerely, Jim Brunner Steve Hass Campaign Co-Chair Campaign Co-Chair

OUR HISTORY The Salvation Army was founded in London in 1865 by Methodist minister William Booth and his wife, Catherine. Booth abandoned the conventional concept of a church and a pulpit, instead taking his message to the people. The Salvation Army’s first converts were alcoholics, morphine addicts, prostitutes and other “undesirables” unwelcome in polite Christian society. To congregations who were desperately poor, he preached hope and salvation. His aim was to lead people to Christ and link them to a church for further spiritual guidance. The Salvation Army of Grand Haven has been serving the residents of North Ottawa County for over 90 years.

CURRENT PROGRAMS The Salvation Army of Grand Haven’s programs have a two-fold focus in the local community, meeting the social and spiritual needs. Meeting Social Needs The Salvation Army of Grand Haven offers utility and rental assistance, emergency and transitional housing, as well as Christmas and Back-to-School assistance to residents in North Ottawa County. Within our service area we are able to help families that would otherwise be in an unstable housing environment or homeless. Food assistance is provided through our client choice food pantry. A summer recreational program in collaboration with Northwest Ottawa Recreational Authority is available for youth K-4th grade. A free summer lunch is provided to children through the USDA Summer Food Service Program.

The Salvation Army also offers a program called Pathway of Hope. Pathway of Hope is a mentoring program that seeks to help individuals and families break the cycle of poverty through mentoring, budgeting resources, community connections, and working toward a sustainable living. Meeting Spiritual and Emotional Needs The Salvation Army believes in helping the total person. To help meet the spiritual and emotional needs in North Ottawa County, The Salvation Army offers chapel services, Christian Education classes, pastoral counsel and youth Character Building programs during the week. The women’s program has several activities throughout the year and also mentors women in the community.

OUR VISION The Salvation Army of Grand Haven has reviewed the immediate and future needs and has identified the following programs to serve our community.

CHILDREN’s PROGRAMS The Salvation Army works in collaboration with several agencies to provide programs to children of our community. Our current facility lacks the space and equipment to provide enhanced programs, which currently include recreational opportunities, free meals, summer recreation program, music classes and character building. For example, classrooms, youth activity rooms, and a multipurpose center will encourage and support the children in the afterschool CHILL program/homework computer lab. It also will offer the opportunity to expand this program to other children in the community.

YOUTH PROGRAMS The Salvation Army is always concerned about the next generation. We desire to make a difference in families and in lives to make a better future. Many of our programs offered to children are also offered to youth teens. Character building, music lessons, teen center, and recreational and sports programs. With a new multipurpose center these programs will be expanded and enhanced.

ADULT PROGRAMS Educational and life skills programs and classes are offered to better the lives of adults. With the addition of a multipurpose center with classrooms, these programs could be expanded to include literacy program, GED classes, parenting classes, cooking classes, sewing classes, financial classes, and legal aid and tenant landlord rights seminars.

COMMUNITY ACCESS AND EVENTS The availability to offer our facility in collaboration with entities in our community betters our community. A full service kitchen and multipurpose center will allow for special events, community meetings and events, senior programs, funerals, weddings, dinners, warming and cooling centers, and if needed an emergency response to take place at The Salvation Army Community Center.

CHRISTMAS AND BACK-TO-SCHOOL EFFORTS A multipurpose center will allow us to adequately serve families at our Back-To-School distribution and our Christmas toy and food distribution.

CHALLENGES FACING THE SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army is currently located at 310 N. Despelder in Grand Haven. This facility has served our needs for some time, but the Advisory Board realizes that the current building is inadequate to meet the needs of North Ottawa residents today and in the future. Lack of space, limited meeting rooms, and inability to run more than one program at the same time due to space restrictions are a few of the challenges The Salvation Army faces in its current facility.

OUR SOLUTION As a result, The Salvation Army’s leadership has decided to expand the facilities at our current location at 310 N. Despelder. This expansion of a new multipurpose room, classrooms, and support areas will add approximately 5,800 square feet to the current building. This expanded facility will continue to house all of our current programming while allowing for the growth of critical and new programs. The Salvation Army of Grand Haven has focused its vision to the needs of its guests, its mission, and its financial capabilities, but we cannot offer these programs in our current facility. The Salvation Army of Grand Haven desires to service this community as best we can, and now is the time to begin expanding our facilities.
