Leadership Message he past fiscal year marks a number of firsts and record-breaking successes for The San Diego Foundation.

Last fall, we unveiled The San Diego Foundation Malin Burnham Center for Civic Engagement and embarked upon an unprecedented engagement of the community through Our Greater San Diego Vision (OGSDV). In the end, we broke a national record in civic engagement for any visioning plan conducted in the United States. For this monumental success, we thank Bill Geppert, Chair of OGSDV. Bob Kelly, President & CEO and Jennifer Adams-Brooks, Chair of The San Diego Foundation.

The result of this community input was shared at our Annual Meeting where we also announced our first Vice President/Executive Director of the Center for Civic Engagement, BongHwan Kim, who will champion this effort by engaging community partners. We have also assembled a leadership committee led by Bob Dynes, PhD, to review and assess the various projects the Center will embark upon for the years to come. On the Center for Charitable Giving side, we also had many firsts and record-breaking events. This past fiscal year, 127 new funds were established which makes this a record-breaking year for the number of new donors – corporate, individual, foundations, and families – who established their charitable foundations to conduct great work in our region through The San Diego Foundation Center for Charitable Giving. We also conducted our first and the community’s largest giving campaign, giveBIG. During an unprecedented 36-hour fundraising effort, the community at-large, along with The San Diego Foundation match, raised $2.4 million with more than 6,000 gifts ranging from $25 to $20,000. All of these projects illustrate that the philanthropic spirit, which we call the “San Diego Way,” is ever-present and increasing in our region. The benevolence of our community and boundless generosity of our donors deserves a tip of the hat and a bow.

We hope you enjoy the pages that follow. We encourage you to also visit our website and interact with our first digital annual report with embedded video messages. This will allow our supporters to virally share our work through the “digital word” in an effort to inspire even more good in the year to come. We also invite you to download The Foundation’s App – which is a first as well for The Foundation and for all community foundations across the country. Together, we celebrate the year in review! We hope these successful illustrations of generosity inspire all of us to keep working towards the common good for all who live in our great region.

Center for Charitable Giving Endowment Funds Donors who choose to establish an endowment fund provide a permanent gift to fund their passions or causes in perpetuity. An endowment continues to grow because the principal portion of the gift is preserved and never granted. A portion of the earnings can be distributed or compounded each year, thereby preserving the assets to support a cause or organization for both current and future needs. This year, the following new endowments were established at The San Diego Foundation. While several are featured on the following pages, the complete biographical information for every endowment is available on our website at www.sdfoundation.org/endowments.

The Margaret Jane Anderson Memorial Scholarship This legacy scholarship fund was established by Margaret Jane Anderson to provide scholarships and educational assistance to young people with dyslexia or similar learning disabilities.

EHS Class of 56 Endowment Fund The Escondido High School Class of 1956 is a group of dedicated supporters of Escondido High School. They have established this fund as a pioneer effort in establishing an endowed class scholarship fund for graduating seniors at Escondido High School. It will enable the class to provide at least three scholarships to students each year who want to continue their education and pursue their dreams. As the endowment grows throughout the future, the scholarships will grow. The selection criteria emphasize the class’ desire to help students who might not otherwise be able to go on to further their technical and/or academic education.

Lolita Diñoso’s mission in life was to bring together San Diego’s Filipino community and keep the Filipino culture alive and thriving.

Lolita Diñoso Carter Endowment Lolita Diñoso Carter was born in the Philippines where she developed an interest in folk dance and the aspirations to be a teacher at a very early age. Lolita and her husband, Lindsay, moved to San Diego in 1962. Lolita founded the Samahan Philippine Dance Company (now Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center). Lolita was dedicated to keeping Filipino culture alive and bringing together people of all ages in the Filipino community. She received innumerable prestigious awards – international, national and local. Her legacy will live on through the designated endowment established to support the Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center.

Salde & Encarnacion Mahal Family Foundation

This fund was established in memory of Cele and Lew Kipperman by their three sons Bob, Dick and Doug to provide scholarships to graduating seniors from Coronado High School. This scholarship replaces the Kippys’ Scholarship given since 1955 by Cele and Lew to a female student excelling in and interested in pursuing business as a career. This scholarship also recognizes the education and educators at Coronado High School where Cele taught from 1961 to 2003, was director of the ROP from 1983 to 1993, and where Lew and Cele’s three sons attended, graduated, and Doug taught from 1987 to 1999.

Zaneta and Myke established the Salde & Encarnacion Mahal Family Foundation to create a legacy of giving for their daughter Micah Mahal and all generations that follow. The Salde and Encarnacion names were included to honor the lineage and legacy of both families. Mahal is not only their daughter‘s name, it also means ”love“ in Tagalog. This foundation will be an extension of love and caring for causes improving the lives of persons in need and the world in which we live.

Margaret Lassey Nursing Scholarship Endowment Fund Norman and Margaret Lassey were married for 63 years before Margaret passed away from the effects of Parkinson’s disease at the age of 90. Margaret became an active volunteer in The Women’s Auxiliary of Pioneers Memorial Hospital in 1959. In 2004, she was presented an award from the Pioneers Hospital Foundation for her years of service with the Women’s Auxiliary. “The Margaret Award” has been presented annually in her honor ever since. Norman, their daughter Carol Greaves, and granddaughters Shelley Ridge and Christi McClain have established this endowment scholarship fund to memorialize Margaret’s devotion to the Pioneers Memorial Women’s Auxiliary, providing a nursing scholarship program in perpetuity.

Center for Charitable Giving Non-Endowment Funds Donors who choose a non-endowment fund address community needs. With the ability to grant various dollar amounts, a critical need may be addressed by distributing the full amount in the fund to support diverse, worthwhile causes and organizations. This year, the following new non-endowments were established at The San Diego Foundation. While several are featured on the following pages, the complete biographical information for every non-endowment is available on our website at www.sdfoundation.org/nonendowments.

Sam Ersan’s support of the Camera Lucida concert series at UCSD’s Conrad Prebys Music Center ensures that San Diego continues to be a premier site for classical music.

Camera Lucida The renowned Camera Lucida concert series at UCSD’s Conrad Prebys Music Center is made possible by the generosity of Sam Ersan who is so passionate about classical music that he established a fund at The San Diego Foundation specifically for its support. Sam first experienced live classical music at the age of 10 in Switzerland which began a life-long interest in music. Mr. Ersan humbly describes himself as a “Turkish guy who is overly passionate about classical music especially the piano trio and quartet repertoire.” In addition to bringing together exceptional San Diego musicians, Sam’s support of Camera Lucida is ensuring that San Diego continues to be a premier site for classical music performance of the highest quality.

The Dini Group Foundation This fund was established to support general charitable purposes.

The ability to remain hopeful can be life-saving and life-changing. The Espero Foundation is a tribute to those who inspire us to have hope for the future through their acts of kindness, generosity and compassion. In particular, the Espero Foundation seeks to improve society for the next generation through support for programs focused on children’s health and wellness, creativity and innovation education, and youth community engagement. Special consideration is given to early stage nonprofits with entrepreneurial spirit and vision, and those which have demonstrated impact. The fund will fulfill the founder’s mission to embody and celebrate kindness, generosity and compassion, and especially HOPE, to make the world a better place for all.

The Fleet Memorial Fund supports organizations working in the field of education, specifically in the areas of science and medicine.

The Fleet Memorial Fund The Fleet Memorial Fund was established to recognize the deceased descendants of Reuben H. Fleet. All grants will be made in their memory. The fund will support organizations working in the field of education, specifically in the areas of science and medicine.

Non-Endowment Funds Martin LaScola Family Foundation The primary purpose of the fund is to assist homeless and/or abused children with relief and education.

The Leichtag Foundation Fund

The David Fulton Fleet and Andrew Carter Fleet Memorial Fund.

The David Fulton Fleet and Andrew Carter Fleet Memorial Fund This fund was established to honor the memory of David Fulton Fleet and his son, Andrew Carter Fleet, both of whom were lifelong residents of San Diego County. Dave and Drew cared deeply about maintaining San Diego’s natural beauty and strong sense of community in a way that would balance important environmental considerations with the resource and service needs of a growing population. The fund targets its support across multiple initiatives, including those focused on the environment and public education.

Josephine Jackson Fund The Josephine Jackson Fund was established to facilitate general charitable giving in San Diego County and Southern Oregon. The fund will focus on youth and firefighting activities – a passion of Frank Ault’s – as well as supporting individuals who are impacted by disasters or other tragic events.

Walt Kizer Charitable Fund The Walt Kizer Charitable Fund was created in memory of Walter C. Kizer (“Walt”) – an amazing husband, generous friend, committed Christian, incredible servant, and a “best friend” to thousands. Walt believed that education was pivotal to the growth and stability of our youth and that helping someone who was attempting to help themselves was one of the most amazing and constructive things a person could do. Before he passed, he and his wife established a scholarship after an attempt at adopting a child. He wanted to help inspire young children of color to dream and to see that dreams can come to fruition.

Building on the community contributions made by Leichtag Foundation founders Max “Lee” Leichtag and his wife, Andre “Toni” Leichtag, the Leichtag Foundation Fund is dedicated to combating poverty and increasing self-sufficiency for residents of coastal North County; supporting and inspiring vibrant Jewish life in coastal North County; strengthening education about the Holocaust and its modern-day lessons for tolerance, understanding, and civility; stimulating renewal, service, and social activism in Jerusalem, Israel; and building strong connections and relationships between San Diego and Israel.

Love The Life You Live Inspired by her nieces Chelsea Gernant and Chasidy Brooker, Heather Back established this fund to support organizations that provide hope, optimism, resources, and mentorships that encourage youth to live the life they love. Heather believes every child deserves the opportunity to fulfill a meaningful and enriched life despite economic and other life challenges blocking their road to bliss. Make-A-Wish San Diego and Big Brothers Big Sisters will receive grants from this fund in the near-term, and hopefully the list will grow as Chelsea and Chasidy discover their philanthropic passions.

Manna Charitable Foundation The Manna Charitable Foundation was established to help kids and prisoners with a second chance. The foundation is named after and inspired by Manna, a reference from the Bible about the wafer-like food that tasted like honey, which God provided the Israelites every morning as they wandered the wilderness for 40 years. Without this miracle food, many would have starved. This food from heaven and the assistance it provided resonates with the founder, who was forced out of his home at the age of 16 by his parents. The donor, who prefers to remain anonymous, has supported a number of programs targeting prisoners and has served as a judge to a prisoner entrepreneur competition for many years, which demonstrated to him that prisoners can be rehabilitated and become productive members of society. Center for Charitable Giving Legacy Funds Legacy funds often pay tribute to beloved family, friends and colleagues well beyond their lifetimes. The San Diego Foundation receives, administers and provides ongoing stewardship of estate gifts, ensuring that each donor’s intentions are honored forever. Lasting legacies can be created through a will, living trust, charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, insurance policy, or qualified retirement plan. We provide expertise and resources so donors can create lasting legacies that remain for years to come. This year, the following legacy funds were established at The San Diego Foundation. While several are featured on the following pages, the complete list of these honorable legacies is available on our website at www.sdfoundation.org/legacy.

Elliott Family Children At-Risk Fund

Ann Burin Adult Dental Foundation supports adults in need of dental services.

Ann Burin Adult Dental Foundation Ann Burin experienced not having proper dental care and found there was plenty of free or affordable services for the maintenance and repair of children’s teeth but little to none for adults who needed the same care. This overlooked need inspired Ann to establish the Ann Burin Adult Dental Foundation to provide grants to organizations that offer dental, periodontal and/or orthodontic care to adults.

Celina’s Education Fund There is no greater joy than helping someone with their educational goals who could not afford to do so otherwise. Education is the universal shining light that offers hope and opportunity to excel in the world and contribute in a meaningful way.

Bruce and Anne Elliott wanted to improve the lives of children in the Ukraine and other countries worldwide. The fund will be advised by their children, including their youngest son, who was adopted from the Ukraine. They have worked in the Ukraine for many years to support children on the street, worked at a government shelter, and ministered to girls in prison. They established Kiev Social Services which is the first facility and program for abused children in the Ukraine, and provided funding toward construction and ongoing operations of a private Christian orphanage that has helped hundreds of children. It is their passion that at-risk children will be cared for through a financial legacy that is administered by their children who share these goals.

Frank Gradijan‘s Scholarship Fund Every person deserves the opportunity to positively contribute to their environment, pursue their passions, see the realization of their dreams, and achieve personal success. They should not be limited in life by the access to a quality education based solely on affordability through no fault of their own. The Frank Gradijan Scholarship Fund hopes to provide all high school graduates with an equal opportunity for a quality college education. The fund provides scholarships to economically disadvantaged children and young adults – without regard to race, religion or ethnicity – who want a college education so they can make a contribution to this world but simply can’t afford it. Scholarship awards are based upon the student’s commitment to work hard and learn while in school and their dedication to follow their dreams in later life.

Legacy Funds George and Setsuko Kusaka Fund Setsuko Kusaka was born in Stockton, California. Her life took many unexpected turns, including a forced stay at a Japanese-American internment camp during World War II and a five-year return to Japan. Setsuko was introduced to her husband, George Kusaka, by mutual friends. George was a successful potato farmer in Idaho and grew tomatoes and strawberries in San Diego. While the Kusakas did not have children of their own, their legacy scholarship will provide multi-year assistance to needy students in San Diego County.

Neumann Family Foundation Arthur and Marilyn Neumann have been involved with many nonprofit organizations as volunteers and donors throughout their lives. Their legacy fund was established to ensure the continuation of their support to select organizations in perpetuity. Arthur and Marilyn have also dedicated a portion of their endowment to enable The San Diego Foundation to address the highest priority needs in the arts and culture community.

Center for Charitable Giving Corporate Giving Companies know that there’s more to being in business than just making money. In today’s business climate, corporate social responsibility is as important as the top line. In fact, it can be a key strategy to revenue generation and keeping employees and shareholders engaged. Consider these facts: Customers with a favorable impression of a company’s charitable activities are three times more likely to be loyal customers. Employees who believe in their company’s philanthropy are five times more likely to remain with that employer. 82% of shareholders are influenced by a company’s corporate citizenship reputation when deciding whether or not to buy that company’s stock.

The San Diego Foundation is proud to partner with a number of corporations that call San Diego home to enact their corporate giving strategies. These companies know the value of giving back into the communities in which they do business, and The San Diego Foundation is their trusted partner in philanthropy to ensure their charitable dollars make a difference in the community while supporting their overarching business goals. Corporate giving services include: • Corporate giving strategy development • Full-service grantmaking support, including community research and site visits • Employee matching gifts and scholarship programs

• Consultation on best practices in corporate philanthropy and social responsibility • Complete back-office services including accounting, investment and tax preparation

Financial Highlights

F

ounded in 1975, The San Diego Foundation began with $210,000 in assets. With continued donations and investment strategies, The Foundation’s assets have grown to more than $560 million today. Our commitment is to maintain and grow the charitable assets entrusted to us to continue to support the organizations and causes specified by our donors for years to come.

Financial Highlights Fiscal Year 2012 Our Finance Committee is responsible for monitoring the fiscal operations, policies and procedures of The San Diego Foundation. Our Audit Committee provides assistance to the board of governors in fulfilling their oversight responsibility to the public relating to the internal accounting and financial controls and the annual independent audit of The Foundation’s financial statements. Our Investment Committee ensures that The Foundation maintains a diversified portfolio of assets in order to meet long-term investment return objectives and to mitigate risk.

Endowment Investment Policy The San Diego Foundation’s endowment funds are invested in a “Endowment Pool” portfolio, which is structured for long-term total return. To provide diversification and to reduce overall risk, the investments are divided into carefully defined asset classes. Assets are invested by professional money managers hired by The Foundation through a competitive process. The investment performance of each money manager is monitored by an independent investment consultant retained by The Foundation and overseen by The Foundation’s Investment Committee. A list of our current investment managers is available on The San Diego Foundation’s website.

In Memoriam Jack Campbell John “Jack” Campbell was known as a man who saw the good in everyone and wanted to make the world a better place. Jack developed polio in early childhood and fervently campaigned to eliminate polio throughout his life. Jack worked for IBM for 16 years and later developed a software company with his wife, Jill, and ultimately retired in Escondido. Jack became deeply involved in the Escondido Charitable Foundation (ECF) as a founding member and Chairman of the Board of the ECF until June 30, 2012. He served a two-year term as chair and prior to that a two-year term as chair of the grants committee. Jack provided thoughtful guidance to these two committees and the membership building committee. Jack and wife, Jill, have held a fund at The San Diego Foundation for a number of years. Jack also served as the Escondido Planning Commissioner, a director of the Rotary Club of Escondido, and helped to establish Plays in the Park.

Rex Martin

William Moises

Rex Martin was known locally for his passion for politics. His public experience began in his hometown in Michigan where he was elected to eight years as City Council member, Deputy Mayor and Mayor. His professional career spanned more than 31 years in Public Safety. Rex was the first civilian (non-sworn) Director of 911 Operations in the 150 year history of Police, Fire and EMS, and was selected after a nationwide search. After retiring from San Francisco, he spent two years with the Department of Homeland Security, Washington D.C., with their Emergency Communications Center. Upon moving to Oceanside in 2007, Rex felt that Oceanside was his new “hometown.” He immediately became involved in the community and was appointed to the Arts Commission. He was a member of the Oceanside Rotary Club, the Oceanside Museum of Art, and served on the board of the Oceanside Charitable Foundation.

William was born in Oklahoma City and San Diego became his home after he visited La Jolla Cove in 1958. Bill’s passion in life was architecture having worked at many firms including his own in La Jolla. Mr. Moises met his wife of 37 years, Patricia Demetre Moises, while remodeling St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. They set out on many adventures including catering, bicycling, traveling, fundraising and volunteering in several charities. He would ask questions about someone to get to know them, encouraged all to find their passion and attempt to fulfill their dreams. He was a positive influence in the lives of many and his goodness will go on to inspire others.

Meg Jacobs was a San Diego Women’s Foundation member and was very active in the Jacobs Family Foundation and Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation in San Diego, serving as their first executive director and as a member of their boards. Her service work spanned multiple cities, starting at VISTA in Baltimore, then in New York City, and finally in San Diego, where she worked for the YWCA’s battered women’s shelter and at HomeStart. She was a lifelong traveler – she loved Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Mrs. Moss was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Science Alliance and a founding member of San Diego Women’s Foundation. She created “A Day for All Women,” an event to raise funds for a MiraCosta College program that offered older women a wide range of classes and job skills. She moved to Olivenhain 22 years ago, and became involved in Girl Scouts San Diego, Vista Community Clinic, and UCSD’s Academic Connections program, among other groups. Mrs. Moss served on the board and generously supported Girl Scouts San Diego for seven years, Recently, the Joan and Ron Moss Women’s Center opened at Vista Community Clinic. Mrs. Moss died of pulmonary arterial hypertension and heart failure on May 11 at her home.

Elaine Lipinsky

Bob Wells

Elaine Lipinsky was a member of the San Diego Women’s Foundation since 2001. She was also an avid supporter of Mama’s Kitchen through the Elaine Lipinsky Family Foundation, and had an impact not only on our organization but in the broader community. She was spirited and generous, and always willing to help.

Bob Wells, a legendary leader and the quintessential volunteer, died at the age of 84. Wells, who came to Rancho Bernardo in the mid-1980s, had a hand in the leadership, formation and expansion of a number of community organizations and projects, including the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, the RB Chamber of Commerce, RB Community Council, Spirit of the Fourth and the Pathway of Pride. Bob was a current RBCF board member, former board chair and a long-time board member of RBCF.
