‘Shop Small,’ Shop Local Is a Big Idea for the Area
S
hop Small Saturday is Nov. 26, a time to stop into the local, independently owned retailers, restaurants or galleries and support them this holiday season. On the calendar between Black Friday and Cyber Monday of Thanksgiving Weekend, Small Business Saturday reminds shoppers to patronize their favorite businesses for special events and promotions to kick off the holiday shopping season. Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce represents hundreds of businesses in the Long Beach Island Region, and has promoted Small Business Saturday since the national concept began in 2010, said Lori Pepenella, chief executive officer of the Long Beach Island Region Destination Mar-
keting Organization. The chamber website visitLBIregion.com and the Facebook page LBI Region will have updates on great Shop Small activities. Unique shopping opportunities abound here, plus fun and fine dining, special events and historic programs. “Shopping locally owned businesses adds value to the community, whether you live or vacation here,” added Andrea Driscoll, chamber president. Supporting small business keeps the unique flavor and feel of the community, provides one-of-a-kind services, creates local jobs, supports charities and local projects, chamber spokespersons listed. It also helps the businesses to gear their inventory to fit the needs of their customers. —M.S.

THE DICKENS YOU SAY!
By JEFF LINKOUS
I
f I have one beer wish during the holidays, it’s for the folks at Boston Beer Co. to rectify the annual goof they make this time of year: putting only two bottles of Old Fezziwig Ale in the holiday 12pack. Their stubbornness in this matter is truly worthy of a lump of coal, since the 12pack is the only way Fezziwig is offered in our area. This circumstance is also, apparently, the headwaters of an annual holiday tradition of mine that involves a beer that, in my homebrewing days, inspired me to make a modest-strength (about 6 percent alcohol by volume) winter warmer spiced with cinnamon, ginger and
orange peel. That was back in the 1990s, when Old Fezziwig had a rather fleeting availability in 22-ounce bomber bottles before disappearing completely until a few years ago. (My homebrewed version always came out great, and among beer-drinking friends was always requested during the holidays.) I’m sure the makers of Samuel Adams Boston Lager would dispute that they’ve made a mistake at all, since what’s printed on the Winter Classics 12-pack carton would have you believe – sarcasm alert – it’s a variety pack, that they intended to include bottles of their Boston and Winter lagers, a chocolate bock, a white IPA, and a ginger beer with Old Fezziwig. Bah, humbug! I’m not buying it. Wait, I already did. Like I did last year, the year before, the year before that, and yes, the year before that. It’s something I’m not altogether too happy with, this annual
tradition of buying 12 bottles of beer when I really want just two. (Sentimentality plus the holidays can make you impulsive.) To be clear, my beef is this: Old Fezziwig is the cream in that assemblage of brews. It’s the Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot range model air rifle in that lot, easily Boston Beer’s best end-of-year seasonal. So, I contend Old Fezziwig could hold its own as a holiday four- or six-pack (if given the chance), even in the era of boundless choice that populates the import and craft beer shelves with all manner of beer styles and holiday brews: Mad Elf, Bad Elf, Seriously Bad Elf, Criminally Bad Elf and Samichlaus, to name check a few familiar stalwarts of the season. But alas, I am – and we are – stuck with that variety pack, limited to a pair of 12-ounce bottles of the tasty, easy-drinking winter warmer named for the apprenticing Ebenezer Scrooge’s kindhearted, generous boss in Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” Limited, that is, unless you get more than one Continued on Page 12

variety pack. (No, I’ve never done that. I have but a taste for Fezziwig, not an obsession.) So yes, bah, humbug! Scrooge, and for that matter, the Rolling Stones once again caption my seasonal plight: You can’t always get what you want. Yeah, yeah, I know the wind-up; ultimately, you get what you need – in my case, a couple of bottles of Old Fezziwig. But 10 other bottles of beer as well, which I give away as gifts in another annual tradition that feels more like regifting a label maker, since those 10 bottles of beer are something I don’t want. Once again, to be clear, my beef isn’t with those remaining beers; they’re good enough brews, just not what I want (or, perhaps, they’re brews my palate has moved past). They’re not Fezziwig. So they indeed become quick gifts: the Boston and Winter Lagers to those folks I know who still enjoy Budweiser, and the rest to fellow craft beer enthusiasts willing to take them off my hands. (Boston Beer is still a respected name in craft brewing, but it sort of lacks cachet among the beer nerds and geeks, meaning it’s not Lawson’s Finest Liquids.) If there’s an irony here, it’s that the Sam Adams variety pack is worthy of giving as a beer gift (no matter how much I inadvertently disparage it by dismissing the companion brews in the box). Gift-giving is a big reason why it exists. But make no mistake, if you’re a giver of craft beer gifts, you have some much better options, courtesy of the plethora of craft breweries that dot the region (message: shop local). So to that end, here are some ideas, which are by no means exhaustive: Glassware, growlers and gift cards. Virtually every craft
12
brewery, whether open or still in the planning/construction stages, has pint glasses and growler jugs for sale that make for good gifts. Stemmed glassware, whether goblet, brandy snifter or wine glass repurposed for beer drinking, makes good gifts as a set or part of a gift basket you put together yourself. So do IPA glasses, dimpled pub mugs and canshaped pint glasses. For those disinclined to do the choosing, a gift card can come in handy. Shirts, hats and miscellaneous memorabilia. Think gift basket again. T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and hats, coasters, openers and bar towels can make the foundation of a gift basket, or serve as sundry items to help fill out a basket. Breweries can put baskets together for you, but honestly, doing it yourself presents an unfettered opportunity for creativity – throw in some grilling spices or charcuterie and cheeses, or beer books (consider Randy Mosher’s Tasting Beer, Jersey author John Holl’s Craft Beer Cookbook, or The Oxford Companion to Beer, a beer bible that came out five years ago but remains essential. Other brews. The store shelves abound with beer va-

riety – styles and brands, imported and those made in America. Once again, the gift basket makes things easy. Try adding some specialty brews, ones with cork and cage tops (like Belgian quads or Belgian-inspired ales), barrel-aged beers or rich imperial stouts. Don’t overlook the bottled or canned seasonal releases from your local brewery. Often those beers are sold exclusively from the brewery taproom. Homebrewing kits. Behind virtually every craft brewery is a homebrewer or brewers who started it. A quick Internet search will line you up with places (some Jersey-based) to get homebrew starter kits,
beer style kits and how-tobrew books. Brewing beer is easy; brewing great beer takes some practice and know-how. A homebrew kit is the first step in that process, and who knows, you could be the catalyst for launching the next killer IPA and hometown brewery. Brewery parties. Craft brewers rent out their taprooms for private parties – birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor parties, pick a special occasion and you can match a taproom party to it. So what this means is you can give the gift of a gathering of friends. Sharing time over a pint is something that craft beer, traditions, and the holidays are about. •

Warmth in The Water Wetsuit Buyer’s Guide

Whether it’s an early-summer morning with a little nip to the water or a frigid winter day, wetsuits are a part of life on Long Beach Island. Here is Kali Emery, suited up for the elements in her Hyperflex Voodoo suit.

I
n the world of the waterman or waterwoman, there is a certain ideal. The sea is always blue. The wind is always offshore. The fish are always thick. The waves are always pumping. And the water is always warm. But conditions on our sandbar rarely qualify as ideal. The wind can blow onshore for a week, making a mess of the surf and making paddling impossible. The waves can go flat. And while we can enjoy three months of comfortable water temps, in the winter, our surf can get down to 30 while the bay freezes. Even upwelling events in the dead of summer can send the ocean 15 degrees down with one day of south winds. That doesn’t mean we love it any less. As surfers, kite-
14
boarders, paddlers and wakeboarders, we make the best and power through. But two things you can’t do without are a good attitude and solid gear. In a climate like ours, a wetsuit is almost as important as the board you ride. It doesn’t matter how serene the bay is, how perfect the wind, how crystal clear the water or how big the surf – if you’re cold, it’s all for nothing. Warmth is always the key, but it’s not everything. You can be as toasty as a campfire, but you also need a suit that’s light, flexible and durable, but also fits your budget. We talked to all the local shops and outfitters to get their opinion on the best gear for the Island – thick suits for the depths of winter; versatile, well-made accessories for the spring and fall; and an ideal piece of gear for summer.

That experience has also been handed off to Wave Hog, its little-brother shop. Both shops concentrate on Hyperflex wetsuits, a New Jersey company. This year, Wave Hog’s Keegan Fessler is most amped up on boots and gloves – the Amp Boot, which comes in a 7 millimeter, and the Oven Mitt 6 mil mesh glove. Both are designed for the coldest of water. The Amp is a round-toe boot that has been improved for a better fit. The Oven Mitt is super stretch mesh neoprene with what they call “Chill²” Breaker mesh skin that blocks evaporative cooling. It also fea-

It’s the same with the boots – warm and durable,” said Wave Hog manager Chris Scarpinato. Hyperflex’s top suit for years running is the Voodoo, a collection of suits that run the gamut from a 5/4/3 mil hooded winter suit to a quality 2.5 mil springsuit for chilly summer mornings. All of these suits are made with Atomic Foam Super Stretch Neoprene. “Traditionally, Hyperflex has been a value wetsuit. Surf Unlimited has been carrying O’Neill wetsuits for decades, one of the industry’s longstanding brands. Several years ago, O’Neill came out with a new material called Technobutter, which was warm, flexible and “soft as butter.” This year, the new O’Neill Psycho Tech suits have the upgraded Techno Butter 2 material, which is even more buttery, the most advanced super stretch neoprene available on the market – 20 percent lighter, 30 percent less water absorption and improved durability with quickdry properties. This runs in suits from the hooded 5.5/4.5 mil, 4/3 mil, and 3/2 mil. Continued on Page 16

“Jack O’Neill developed a wetsuit for surfing in 1952 in northern California. The reason was simple: He wanted to surf longer!” said George Gales, owner of Surf Unlimited. “His brand transformed the way we surf and how much we are able to surf in any climate on Earth. When you’re choosing a wetsuit, it’s not a
bad idea to choose one from the company of the guy who invented them, so you can let the cold know that you’re not afraid.” Gales also points to the O’Neill Mutant, which comes as a 5/4 mil or 4/3 mil, and can be worn as a hooded or nonhooded suit with O’Neill’s Modular Closing System.
South-End Surf N’ Paddle, Body Glove Women’s 220 South Bay Ave., Beach Haven 609-492-8823, southendsurfnpaddle.com Good wetsuits are versatile. Body Glove has some great women’s gear for paddling or surfing that has done very well for South-End Surf N’ Paddle since so many women are taking to the water. “Body Glove was the first to pioneer neoprene swimsuits for girls back in the ’80s, both one-piece and bikinis. And the ones we carry are all super cute,” said owner Ken Gallant. “They have flattering style with the function of a wetsuit, great cuts and fits in or out of the water, and they keep girls
warm.” The Smoothie is Body Glove’s bikini – sexy, but made to stay in place for activities on those warm-water days. The Capri is a quick-dry, breathable super-stretch Capri pant for in and out of the water. For chilly water or paddling in the late spring or early fall, the Stellar is a long-sleeved spring suit with a “boy bottom,” with cuts that come down the legs. For something more stylish, the Smoothie L/A springsuit has a more flattering “vee bottom” swimsuit-type fit. Men are covered, too, as South-End has the Body Glove Heritage collection, a classic fit 2 mil long john, 2 mil short john, 2 mil jacket, and pullover vest.
Farias Surf & Sport, Patagonia Yulex 2800 Long Beach Blvd., Ship Bottom 609-492-0200, fariassurf.com If there’s one game changer this year in the wetsuit world, it’s Patagonia’s Yulex suits. The company’s roots are in the climbing world, and it has grown to provide responsibly made gear for all manner of outdoor pursuits. Patagonia, which has long been ahead of the curve on environmental responsibility, came out with its first wetsuits about eight years ago. For decades, wetsuits have been made out of toxic, petro-
leum-based neoprene. Over the last several years, Patagonia has developed a natural rubber

derived sustainably from trees. And the trees happen to meet Forest Stewardship Council standards set forth by the Rainforest Alliance. “It’s the world’s first neoprene-free wetsuit. By choosing natural rubber, they reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent in the manufacturing process. Patagonia is just doing something awesome again with our environment in mind,” said Brian Farias of Farias Surf Shops in Ship Bottom, Surf City and
Beach Haven. The move is a step in an awesome direction for the surf industry, which is often a leader in environmental responsibility. After all, it’s the environment that we surf, play and live in that’s at stake. Patagonia’s entire line of wetsuits is Yulex this year, from the 6.5/5.5 mil R5 for January to the 2 mil R1 for next summer. Moreover, if you’re not happy with your suit, return it to Patagonia for replacement, refund or repair.

Island Surf and Sail, Body Glove Red Cell 3304 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach 609-494-5553, islandsurf-sail.com Island Surf and Sail is the definitive outfitter for the multisport waterman, as it is the only local retailer to deal surf, kite, paddle, wake, windsurfing and even snowboard gear. And for all of these pursuits, it is particularly fired up on Body Glove’s Red Cell wetsuits. The Red Cell technology aims to absorb the sun’s infrared rays and transfer the heat to your body, to keep you in the water longer. “The Red Cell is the only 3/2 wetsuit I’ve been able to wear comfortably into Novem-

If it’s not a very windy day, you can basically wear a full millimeter less of a suit than everyone else in the water with the Red Cell,” said Island Surf and Sail manager Adam Frack. “Wearing less rubber gives you more mobility, and Red Cell is already the most flexible suit out there. The resin-based infrared light interacting liner is the thing that sets it apart.” This year, Island Surf and Sail will also carry the Body Glove Solite boot, the first heat-molded wetsuit boot ever created. Borrowing technology from snowboard boots, you can warm the booty up, then put your foot in and mold it to the shape of your foot and ankle. •

The Boat Shop Brims With Gifts for Mariners ’
T
is always the season for boaters to think about maintaining and upgrading their crafts, and to envision cruising across open water. As the holidays approach, consider stopping by The Boat Shop in Manahawkin for gifts of every shape and size for mariner family and friends. As store co-owner Dave Schuda explained, The Boat Shop was established in 1968, and has been at its 756 East Bay Ave. location since 1975. Schuda’s wife, Lynn, who was born and raised in the area, worked for the previous owners beginning in 1990; the couple took the reins in 2001. (“She’s the boss and I lift the heavy boxes,” Schuda quipped.) Last month, nautical holiday cards – a bestseller – were already in stock, and the store was planning to erect a Christmas tree hung with maritime ornaments available for purchase. “Tide clocks are extremely popular” as gifts, said Schuda, particularly those featuring images of the Barnegat Lighthouse and a blue claw crab. A room off to the side of the store is filled with fun potential presents, including various towables and water toys. Also featured is a SurfStow inflatable standup paddleboard, which is highly portable without sacrificing performance. As Schuda noted, the SUP can be inflated in less than 10 minutes, and then deflated after use, to fit easily in a car for transport. The shop also carries graphite paddles for SUPs, as well as kayak paddles and rowboat oars.

A selection of E-SeaRider marine grade bean bag seats, meanwhile, is specifically designed for boating. The heavier, stiffer seats – which can be ordered in custom colors – are more comfortable than a deck chair or captain’s chair. “These are not the bean bags from your college dorm,” said Schuda. As the company explains at e-searider.com, “Our bean bags allow the boat to maintain a higher rate of speed virtually eliminating back and neck discomfort associated with the constant pounding that higher
Shore Traditions/A Guide to the Holiday Season 2016
boat speeds deliver.” The shop also carries pedestal chairs and folding chairs for boats. Other great gift ideas, Schuda suggested, include Sperry shoes; life jackets, for dogs and humans; charts; and flares. The store’s selection of polarized sunglasses, meanwhile, runs only $17 to $23, a manageable price for when they go overboard. “If you know a boater, you know they can technically use everything” from boat wash to electronics, Schuda pointed out. The latter, he added, “is a
pretty nice thing to have under the tree.” The Boat Shop carries Garmin GPS – but can order other brands – as well as fish finders, VHF and AM/ FM radios, and more. A gift certificate to the store is also a great idea – and the shop’s certificates don’t expire. Visit The Boat Shop at 756 East Bay Ave. or call 609597-1271. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Boat Shop is online at theboatshoponline.com. —J.K.-H.

Sandbox Café Offering Free Community Dinner On Thanksgiving Day
A
nyone in need of a meal on Thanksgiving Day is invited to enjoy a full turkey dinner for free at the Sandbox Café’s Surf City restaurant, located at 1403 Long Beach Blvd. Individuals and families can stop by any time on Thursday, Nov. 24, between noon and 5 p.m. All meals will include turkey and fixings as well as pie for dessert. “I’m looking for people who need a free meal, who have nowhere to go, anyone that’s alone, or if it’s a family that just doesn’t want to cook,” Sandbox owner Dana DiSalvio said. This is something that DiSalvio has been “dying” to do for a long time, ever since
Mike Mercadante, the owner of a former restaurant at the site, Tiki Taco, held a similar event a number of years ago. “I admired him for that,” said DiSalvio. “I thought it was such a great idea, and I always said that if I have my own place inside, that this is something I definitely would want to do for a community that has welcomed me with open arms.” The Sandbox’s other location, which has been in business for the past 15 years in Ship Bottom, is an outdooronly café. After acquiring the Surf City spot this past April, DiSalvio is finally able to host the event. Though the Sandbox owner
Jack Reynolds
is unsure of how many meals will be served, she noted that the event post on the restaurant’s Facebook page has more than 200 shares, 600 “likes” and between 80 and 100 messages and comments. “Really that’s not why we’re doing it, but even people who come into the restaurant, especially when I see fishermen that come in, I tell them, ‘Please make sure you spread the word. If you have nowhere
to go, please come join us.’ And I emphasize free because I know there are a lot of restaurants doing Thanksgiving, but I want to make it something that the community wants to do to give back to people.” Food will be served until it runs out. If there are any leftovers, next day’s specials will include “turkey everything,” said DiSalvio. For more information, call 609-361-2524. —K.A.E.

Viking Village Christmas Barnegat Light Tradition
S
anta’s stops in Barnegat Light are in true fishing village style. He arrives by Coast Guard boat on Friday, Nov. 25 at 6:30 p.m. to light the tree in front of the post office, and then the next day he is guest of honor at Santa’s Viking Village Christmas on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. The annual tradition turns the tide from Thanksgiving that Thursday, to the holiday season. On Friday night, kids of all ages line the public boat ramp on West 10th Street to see Santa’s awesome arrival by boat. Then everybody treks up 10th Street to the post office, where Santa and the mayor preside over the tree lighting and the Christmas carol singing. It’s off to the Barnegat Light First Aid Squad across the street after that, for treats and the chance to see Santa up close. On Saturday, Santa’s favorite north end stop for over 30 years is at Viking Village at 19th Street and the bayfront. Santa is the star, but there’s a whole array of other activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
24
Santa’s Viking Christmas Village will be decked out with more than 40 artists and crafters. It will be the scene of an arts and crafts show that will replace a rained-out date last September. Pictures with Santa are a highlight. Bring your camera for photos in this cool Yule commercial dock setting. Santa arrives by fire truck at 1 p.m. Music makes the scene merry as Ted Hammock sings the tunes. Sing along, in between bites of candy canes. Warm up with your favorite drink from How You Brewin’ or chowder from Off The Hook. Check out the wreath sale, and the shops at Viking Village will be open, too. Test Your Memory Of Santa’s First Arrival Viking Shows is asking a contest question: “Help us figure out how many years Santa has visited Viking Village.” “Our children, our grandchildren and family pets have sat on Santa’s lap. We are looking for the oldest picture we can find, going back to at least the Eighties, of your little ones on Santa’s lap in front of

eep Christ In Christmas,” reads a popular bumper sticker. Well, churches never forget Christ is the centerpiece of the holiday, and three of them in Southern Ocean County are putting the spotlight squarely on the birth of Jesus by hosting live nativities this holiday season. The First United Methodist Church of Tuckerton will host its popular “living nativity” once again this year, as it has for some two decades. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10. It is timed to coincide with the borough’s Ye Olde Christmas celebration. The live nativity is free to the public, as are cookies and hot chocolate. Tuckerton United Methodist Church is also celebrating an earlier holiday by hosting a community Thanksgiving service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23. The church is located at 126 North Green St. Up in Manahawkin, the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, located at 333 North Main St. (Route 9), will hold its annual living nativity on Saturday, Dec. 17. They’re actually having it twice, at 5 and 7 p.m. Both, of course, are free to the public. St. Mary of the Pines Roman Catholic Church at 100 Bishop Way off McKinley Ave. in Manahawkin is a relative newcomer to the live
nativity scene, but it entered it in a big way four years ago. Its living nativity will be held all afternoon on Sunday, Dec. 11, followed by a special choir concert at 7 p.m. followed by a “light spectacular.” The plans for the day’s celebrations are still being finalized, but last year’s lineup gives an idea of just how spectacular the St. Mary of the Pines festivities can be. A bagpiper opened the show with renditions of “Amazing Grace” and “The First Noel” while a flutist performed “Oh Holy Night” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” A version of “Little Drummer Boy” featured an actual little drummer boy. Last year’s gettogether also had a segment praising active members of the military and veterans, with a sax player performing “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Toss in hot chocolate, refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus, and just about every base was covered. All of the above celebration is free. But another concert, by the renowned Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea, is a paying proposition. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, in St. Mary of the Pines Church. Tickets are $28 per person. For tickets or for additional information, call Dot Karabin at 609698-4242. —R.M.
the shacks at Viking Village,” said Pam Larson, owner of The Seawife shop and operator of Viking Shows. “Send us your picture to vikingshows@gmail.com.” The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to spend in
Viking Village or with their visiting crafters or artists on Saturday, Nov. 26. And, the winner will be thanked by having a copy of their picture hung in the little museum at Viking Village. —M.S.

Christmas Walk Returns To Ye Olde Tuckerton
T
he annual Ye Olde Tuckerton Christmas Walk is Dec. 10, when the borough goes all out to create a holiday night for shopping and honoring the season. As in past years, Santa Claus will arrive by firetruck and be waiting in his Christmas Village in borough hall, at 140 East Main St. If it is not snowing, two snow machines outside the hall will be going full blast to keep Santa cool! The free horse and buggy rides depart from behind the hall. The First United Methodist Church, at 126 North Green St., will hold its annual Live Nativity (see related story), a Christmas bazaar and open house with cookies and punch. The Tuckerton Historical Society will hold its annual Christmas party in the Little Borough Hall, 220 South Green St., with clam chowder, cookies and punch available after 6 p.m.
New this year is an outdoor vendor market with Christmas decorations and handmade crafts by local artisans in the Seaport Plaza parking lot starting at 5 p.m. The Tuckerton branch of the Ocean County Library and other community groups plus the Festival of Trees will be at the Tuckerton Seaport. On the way, stop at the Tuckerton Emporium for evening hours, live music and holiday fare. Come out for an oldfashioned stroll, window shop and enjoy what Tuckerton is famous for: community! —P.J.

Right After the Parade, Head to the Firehouse For Tinsel and Treasures
I
f you’re going to watch the Ship Bottom Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3, you might also want to stop by the Ship Bottom firehouse for the auxiliary’s first-ever Tinsel and Treasures Merchant Mart. One of the event coordinators, Sandy England, said the doors will open at 1:30, a half hour after the parade is scheduled to step off. “We’ll have close to 20 vendors,” said England. “We’re going to have arts and crafts, holiday gifts and clothing. We’re thinking of staying open until around 5, so people
will have plenty of time to stop by after the parade.” England said the auxiliary will also sell hot and cold foods. “We’ll have coffee and hot chocolate available,” she said. England said she hopes the event becomes an annual holiday fixture. “The parade always draws such a huge crowd,” said England. “We thought we would try this because we want to do what we can to raise money and help our fire company.” For more information, call England at 609-207-6051. —E.E.

Christmas Tree Sale Kicks Off on Black Friday
I
f you’re in the market for a Christmas tree, you can purchase one locally during the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Co.'s Christmas tree sale at its Central Avenue lot. Trees will be available through Christmas Eve or when the trees are sold out, whichever happens first. But unlike past years, this year’s sale will begin the day after Thanksgiving, or Black Friday, on Nov. 25. “Traditionally, we would start the sale on the date of the Christmas parade,” said sale coordinator Josh Traut. “But we figured a lot of people will be here for Thanksgiving, so we can take advantage of that.” Traut said the price range is $20 for table tops to $90 for 12- to 13-footers. Free local delivery is offered. “But most of what we have are the standard 6- to 8-foot
sizes,” said Traut, fire company captain. “They are all freshcut Pennsylvania Douglas firs. Last year, we sold around 250 trees.” He said firefighters will be on hand to assist people fitting the trees into their vehicle. Free delivery is available locally. Traut said proceeds will help the company with miscellaneous expenses. “It can be for utilities and building maintenance, as well as firefighting equipment,” he said. “We have to do all we can to stay up-to-date.” Sale hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 10 a..m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 to 6. It is closed Tuesday and Thursday. For more information, email the company at shipbottomfire@gmail.com. —E.E.

‘Elf Jr.’ an Our Gang Premiere This Holiday Season By KIM TRAVERS
A
s the holiday season quickly rolls in, Our Gang Players prepares to meet it with the community theater troupe’s annual Christmas show, this year a performance of “Elf Jr., the Musical.” A takeoff on the movie “Elf,” this heartwarming tale tells the story of Buddy the Elf, an orphan who travels from the North Pole to New York City in the search of his birth dad and ends up saving Christmas. The movie struck a chord with many, and was then turned into a musical. Our Gang will produce the junior version of this work, an abridged version of the Broadway play. “It’s an easier, simpler version that was scaled down for educational purposes,” said director Stacey Schnepp-Stoops. The cast of 77 children includes ages from kindergarten to seventh grade. “There is amazing amount of talent that continues to flourish in this area,” said Schnepp-Stoops. The on-stage learning that goes on is not limited to the kids involved. The director herself is expanding her wealth of knowledge. “It’s a learning experience for me,” explained SchneppStoops, “because I’ve helped with choreography, which is what theater is all about: learning, growing and expanding.” Our Gang emphasizes the importance of family and community by giving everyone who auditions an opportunity to be in its performances. “If the show is written for 30 we will take 78. We don’t judge. It’s a
34
Featuring a Cast of 77 Children whole different experience. We take everyone who wants to be a part. The kids learn how to build their confidence that they can take with them always,” said Schnepp-Stoops. The lesson of personal development is important for Our Gang Players and is reflected in the story of “Elf Jr.,” which shows that you are never too old to learn and grow. “Elf Jr.” is a new show for the almost 40-year-old theater troupe. “The music is really catchy, the kids love it, and they love the dances so far,” said the director, who is helping out with choreography alongside Darlene Perucki and Heather Rudolph. People can catch a preview of “Elf Jr.” at an Our Gang Holiday Breakfast fundraiser at T.G.I. Friday’s Sunday, Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., for $10 per person. Breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, bacon and a beverage, and there will be a bake sale. The cast will

perform songs from “Elf Jr.” periodically throughout the morning to preview the show. “It takes many volunteers to make a show happen. There are many other parents who volunteer their time so that all the aspects of ‘Elf Jr.’ are coordinated and our fundraisers are successful. We are grateful here at Our Gang to have such amazing families that step up to support not only their children but OGP as well,” noted Schnepp-Stoops. “Elf Jr.” will be performed at the Stafford Township Arts Center, opening on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Additional performances are on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. and a matinée on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets for the show are $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors and $10 for children 12 and younger. Tickets can be ordered on the website ourgang. org or call 609-597-0553. •

Parade in Ship Bottom Lining Up for Christmas
I
t may be only early November, but Ship Bottom says it is time for people to begin working on their floats for the borough’s Christmas Parade scheduled Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. This year’s theme is “A Shell of a Christmas.” “We really want to encourage businesses, organizations and families to design and build their homemade floats,” said Kathleen Wells, borough clerk. “I think this theme will be a good one for people to come up some clever ideas.” She said there is no fee for entering a float or participating in the parade, but entrants need to register. The procession steps off
from the Ethel Jacobsen School at Fifth Street and Barnegat Avenue. The parade route runs through Ship Bottom on Long Beach Boulevard to 25th Street. Parade line-up time is 10:30 a.m. for floats and 11:30 a.m. for all other participants. The viewing stand will be located in front of the borough hall at 16th Street and Long Beach Boulevard. A face painter will set up shop in borough hall. Various sponsorships are available to help pay for the bands in the parade. For more information, log on to shipbottom.org or call Wells at 609494-2171, extension 116. —E.E.

Celebrate the Season in Beach Haven ‘Brings the Community Together’
T
he summer isn’t the only time of year Beach Haven is thriving with exciting events and festive spirit. The holidays are always a magical occasion in the Queen City as local organizations, businesses and individuals get together for Celebrate the Season, a gathering of special offerings throughout town every weekend from the end of November to the beginning of January. While the Long Beach Island Historical Museum and the Beach Haven Community Arts Program have hosted holiday events for many years, Beach Haven Future, a local organization comprised of business owners and residents, helps coordinate the celebrations with the borough and business community to commemorate the holidays from Black Friday through New Year’s day, from a Cookie Throw-Down in Bay Village to holiday parties at local restaurants. “We are most looking forward to the dog parade this year,” said Lisa Mack, a BHF member. “It is, unanimously, Beach Haven Future’s board of directors’ favorite holiday event. It brings the community together and everyone smiles, even the dogs. Last year we introduced ‘Spot a Character’ Day and combined

it with the dog parade. The response from the participants and businesses was so positive that we plan to combine the two events again this year.” The events will be held Saturday, Dec. 10, with “Spot a Holiday Character” Day beginning at Regenerate and ending at Fantasy Island, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The dog parade, offering prizes, will take place at noon at Veterans Memorial Park. A pet parade, a separate event sponsored by Buddy’s Pet Stop, will be held that same day at the Taylor Avenue ball field from noon to 2. The event will offer pet adoptions through Fetch Me a Home Pet Rescue, pictures with Santa and holiday costume prizes. The first official weekend of Celebrate the Season merriment will begin Friday, Nov. 25, with first-time and tradi-

tional activities such as Sea La Vie’s Holiday Sea of Savings, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., which includes giveaways and a chance to win an original Lucy Evelyn watercolor. Kapler’s Pharmacy’s ever-popular Holiday Soirée, featuring horse and carriage rides, ice sculpture, giveaways, light fare and beverages, will take place between 4:30 and 6:30. The Festival of Lights will begin throughout town and Veterans Memorial Park at 5. Residents and visitors can also pick a tag from the “Tree of Warmth” throughout the day at Murphy’s Marketplace to benefit the St. Francis Center program. Individuals who enter a tag will have a chance to win a holiday basket. Customers who purchase a whole Italian sub will get half an Italian sub for free during the market’s “No Cook” Fridays as well.
Breakfast with Santa at Carmen’s Restaurant, offering gifts and a special kids menu, will be held by reservation Saturday, Nov.26. The Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Co.’s Craft Show will also be held from 10 until 3 that day, along with Sea La Vie’s Holiday Sea of Savings from 10 to 7. Murphy’s will offer samplings of hot cider, holiday breads and pumpkin dip from 10 to 4. Residents and visitors are also invited to Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus in Bay Village between noon and 2, and the second day of Kapler’s Holiday Soiree will be held from 4:30 to 6:30. The Long Beach Island Historical Museum will be decorated for Christmas during an open house in the evening, offering hot drinks and cookies from 4:30 to 8. Caroling around the tree will take place at 7. Bring forks or wire coat hangers for marshmallows around the fire across the street from the museum at Veterans Memorial Park, between 4:30 and 7. Sea La Vie’s Holiday Sea of Savings will also be held Sunday, Nov. 27, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For updates on Celebrate the Season events, visit BHF’s Facebook page. —K.A.E.

Last Skirmish Of Revolution Fought Here 'The Affair at Cedar Bridge' To Be Re-enacted Dec. 18 By RICK MELLERUP
T
his year’s commemoration of “The Affair at Cedar Bridge,” reputed to be the last documented land battle of the American Revolution, will be held at the site of the historic Cedar Bridge Tavern in the woods of Barnegat Township at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18. That may seem early
considering the skirmish between a small force of American patriots of the Burlington Militia under the command of Capt. Richard Shreve and British-leaning American loyalists in the form of Capt. John Bacon and his ragtag gang of “Pine Barrens robbers” was fought on Dec. 27, 1782. It is indeed earlier than usual because the 2016 calendar is
File Photo
messing with history. The affair’s commemoration/re-enactment has, of late, been held on the Sunday closest to the actual date of the battle in order to draw more re-enactors and spectators. In 2015 ,the 27th fell on a Sunday, so all was in perfect historical order. But in 2014 the festivities took place on Sunday, Dec. 28. Well, the Sunday closest to Dec. 27 this year is Dec. 25 – Christmas Day! The situation would be no better if the event’s sponsor, the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission, were to move the event to the next Sunday because that would make it Jan. 1, New Year’s Day. Thus the date Dec. 18 was chosen while the snow date was set for Sun-
day, Jan. 8. The last great battle of the American Revolution was concluded on Oct. 19, 1781, when British commander Lord Cornwallis surrendered his army, which had been trapped on Virginia’s Yorktown peninsula by American and French forces. But small-scale actions between loyalists and patriots continued in the bloody American South well into 1782, as well as in the west, where patriots battled small contingents of British troops and their American Indian allies. Still, Cedar Creek has a pretty good claim as being the final battle of the war, which wasn’t officially over until the Treaty of Paris was signed on Sept. 3, 1783. Continued on Page 52

Several Opportunities to Give To Others This Holiday Season By DAVID BIGGY
A
my Grant and Matthew West once sang these lyrics: “What if December looked different this year? What if we all just give this Christmas away? If there’s love in your heart, don’t let it stay there.” And while the song “Give This Christmas Away” mainly was a theme song for Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child, the mantra fits just about anywhere during the holidays, specifically with Thanksgiving and Christmas. This holiday season, several big opportunities are available to those who would rather give than receive. For more than 30 years, PBA Local 297 and the Stafford Township Recreation Department have been coordinating efforts to give Christmas away through the annual Holiday Toy Drive and, more recently, the Stafford Cares For Kids Winter Coat Drive. “There’s a huge need in the community, and we do our best to gets gifts and coats for children in need in the area,” said Jennifer McBrien, who coordinates the rec department’s efforts alongside Deb Budesa. “It’s always awesome to see how many generous people get involved, and many of the backstories of people who have been helped and those giving to them are incredible.” The annual Toy Drive began on Nov. 7, and there’s no such thing as having too much. “We don’t always get a lot of them, but American Girl dolls are popular for the girls, and Nerf guns and LEGOs are
48
popular for the boys,” McBrien said. “But really, every gift helps, and there’s never a time when we can have too much. There’s always somebody else out there who is in need, and we always try to make Christmas something special for everyone.” The PBA and Recreation Department are looking for new, unwrapped gifts for boys and girls, newborn through age 18. Toys and age-appropriate items such as craft sets, clothing and accessories, movie tickets, gift cards and certificates are appreciated. Coats for all ages and sizes are needed as well. Anything for both the Toy Drive and Coat Drive can be dropped off at any time to the police department at the Stafford Township Municipal Building at 260 East Bay Ave., Manahawkin, or weekdays during business hours at either the Bay Avenue Community Center, 775 East Bay Ave., or the Pine Street Recreation Building, 25 Pine St. Also, be on the lookout for collection boxes at business locations throughout the area. For more information, call Budesa at 609-489-0913 or McBrien at 609-597-1000, extension 8573. Email inquiries also can be made to dbudesa@ staffordnj.gov or jmcbrien@ staffordnj.gov. If you’re interested in donating gifts to an organization with a bit wider reach, you can give to the Toy Run Foundation, which last year helped several hundred families throughout Southern Ocean County.
Shore Traditions/A Guide to the Holiday Season 2016
“We had the Motorcycle Toy Run a few weeks ago, but our turnout wasn’t as high because we had to postpone it a couple of times due to bad weather,” said Christina Jarin, who along with her husband, Dennis, and Lou Serrao coordinates the efforts of the foundation. “So we’re a little behind right now, and we have a lot of families we’re going to try to help. We’ve been doing this 17 years, through St. Mary’s Church, and the demand is always increasing. We never have enough.” Jarin said each child on their list may receive three to five gifts each, and they’re doled out at the St. Mary’s Parish Center in Manahawkin on one day in mid-December,
department-store style. Gifts for teenagers are especially needed, and any store gift cards up to $15 each are always a hot item. Jarin said some appropriate gifts for older girls include makeup kits, blow dryers or hair straighteners, stationery, throw blankets, purses, winter gloves and scarves, and bath-and-beauty sets. For older boys, Jarin recommended skateboards, sports equipment, wallets, sports team apparel, men’s electric razors, and deodorant and cologne sets. Items can be dropped off at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 747 West Bay Ave., Barnegat, or at St. Mary’s Parish Center, 100 Bishop Way, Manahawkin, on Dec. 16, after 4 p.m. Continued on Page 52

MakeShift Union’s Nighttime Market, Holiday Exhibit A Celebration at LBI Foundation By VICTORIA FORD
T
he MakeShift Union and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies combine forces this season to create a festive shopping event that not only celebrates the holidays, but also supports the arts and encourages buying locally handcrafted goods. The Night Market and Holiday Exhibit will be “a sparkling, cozy” affair that brings the work of 75 vendors together in an indoor-outdoor experience. On Nov. 26, also recognized as Small Business Saturday, the indoor-outdoor market will take place on the LBIF campus from noon to 8 p.m. Outside, explore offerings by over 50 handmade vendors while enjoying fire pits, carolers from Bellarine Theatre Co., and photos and lap-sitting with one very jolly guest of honor. Locally made beverages and food, hot chocolate and s’mores will keep you warm and well fed. Inside the gallery, about two dozen more vendors display works of art and craft through Jan. 21. “We invite you to check back often as more details are released about this merry meeting of all things handmade and beautiful,” organizers urge on the Facebook event page. Those interested in vend-
50
ing should visit themakeshiftunion.com. Organizers Jeannine Errico, Erin Buterick and Dani Corso shared their insights. After last year’s Makers Fest, Corso said, in response to an influx of emails from guests looking for contact information for participating vendors, the team created the Makers Holiday Guide, with the idea of looking for the right location for a holiday market in the future. “When LBIF invited us to rebrand their winter gallery, we jumped at the chance,” she said. “It really is the perfect spot to house an extended gallery and pop-up event.” As manager of programs and administration at LBIF, Errico said the Foundation makes the perfect venue as “a beautiful space with the potential to be transformed into a winter wonderland” where a sense of community and holiday cheer blends and expands. Guests are encouraged to “make an entire day of it” by exploring and patronizing small businesses Island-wide, she added. The whole idea is for guests to get a good start on their holiday shopping while supporting small business locally. Buterick noted the event offers a refreshing alternative to the usual holiday shopping scene, with a festive atmosphere and experience to go along with it. “So many people make (or are given) lists
Shore Traditions/A Guide to the Holiday Season 2016
of gifts to purchase or may even feel intimidated by the idea of shopping handmade.” Her hope is the event might inspire more-meaningful gift giving. “I think it’s important to remember that spending money locally, especially in small businesses, is a mutually beneficial transaction,” Buterick said. “Choosing to spend your money in this fashion helps to pay someone’s mortgage instead of funding a corporate bonus. There are many detrimental effects brought about by mass (especially overseas) manufacturers, whereas small batch/ handmade/local producers generate far less waste.” The argument for locally handcrafted goods is simple: “Cheap and fast items that are shipped in from overseas are not made well and won’t last,” Errico said. “Not to mention the conditions in which people are often forced to work to make these items are horrendous and morally objectionable. Handcrafted items are made with love and care and are backed by years of skillhoning experience.” From a consumer’s standpoint, “there’s something truly special about finding a oneof-a-kind gift forged from the
imagination,” Corso said. Supporting independent artists and service providers celebrates the brave act of pursuing a passion and represents a maker’s hopes, dreams, successes, failures and vision. “You are emboldening them to continue to overcome the daily obstacles that face entrepreneurs. Beyond that, you are helping to strengthen the local economy, wherever that ‘local’ may be. Shopping small is essential to the growth of a sustainable small business microcosm.” For the artists, the market and exhibit are an opportunity for exposure, networking and collaboration, Errico said. The MakeShift Union’s ongoing goal, according to Corso, is to provide 1., opportunities for creatives to showcase their work in a collaborative space where the atmosphere is as unique as the products, and 2., a forum for the community to connect with the artists and each other. “Our little island, and region, is such a fabulous and unique community full of movers, shakers and change makers,” Errico said. “I can’t wait to see what everyone brings to the table this holiday • season.”

Bring Ornaments,Voices To Tree Lighting Dec. 2
T
he Ship Bottom Merchants Association kicks off the borough’s holiday celebration with a tree lighting in front of borough hall on Friday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. Association President Maggie O’Neill said the event serves as a prelude to the Ship Bottom Christmas Parade, scheduled for the next day at 1 p.m. This year’s theme is “A Shell of a Christmas” (see separate story). O’Neill said hot chocolate and doughnuts will be provided and people are welcome to bring their homemade ornaments for the tree. “There will also be gift
give-aways," she said. O’Neill hopes participants will warm up their voices, as the event includes carol singing. “We want everyone to bring their holiday voices and have fun,” she said. “We also hope that people shop locally and support our businesses during the holiday shopping season.” For more information, contact O’Neill at 609-7091425. —E.E.

Shore Traditions/A Guide to the Holiday Season 2016
Continued from Page 46 The Affair at Cedar Bridge began when Bacon learned that Shreve’s troops, who had been scouring the countryside for a couple of days looking for the loyalist/pirate who had a bounty on his head, had sought refreshment at the Cedar Bridge Tavern. Bacon and his men barricaded the Cedar Bridge, attempting to trap the patriots. The patriots attacked and were getting the better of it until some local loyalists shot into their flank. Bacon was injured in the battle – as were three of his men – but he escaped in the confusion. A patriot fighter was killed and four others wounded. It is difficult to say exactly what festivities will take place on Dec. 18. In the past, however, re-enactments of the battle have
been staged, black powder demonstrations have been presented, and re-created military encampments have been established. Tours of the Cedar Bridge Tavern, now owned and being renovated by Ocean County, have been conducted while bonfires have been built to ward off the winter chill. The commemoration lasts two hours. The easiest way for most area residents to make their way to the rather remote site is to head west on Route 72 to the intersection with County Road 532 (the Warren Grove Road). Turn left onto 532 and travel just a tenth of a mile and take a right onto Old Cedar Bridge Road. About a mile down that unpaved roadway you will see the tavern, located just before a small automobile bridge. •

Of course, there are other ways to give for the upcoming holidays. Multiple food pantries exist locally to help those in need of food, particularly for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Connected to St. Mary’s, the St. Vincent DePaul Society accepts food and monetary donations each weekday from 9 a.m. to noon. Call Marie Dorrey at 609-698-7477 for more information. Also with St. Mary’s, the St. Bernard’s Food for Pets ministry accepts funds and donations of pet food and treats each day from 9 a.m. to noon as well. Call
Judy Healey at 609-489-0772 for more information. The St. Francis food pantry also is need of food and funds as the holidays draw closer. Monetary and food donations can be dropped off at the St. Francis Community Center, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach. Call 609-494-8861, extension 197. Helping homeless families through Family Promise of Southern Ocean County also is a great way to give for the upcoming holidays. Family Promise is in need of gift cards – ShopRite, Walmart, Wawa, Kohl’s, etc. – in increments of $25 or $50 that it can distribute to local families in need. Gift cards can be dropped off to Family Promise headquarters at 338 South Main St., Barnegat, or mailed to P.O. Box 926, Barnegat, N.J. 08005. For more information, • call 609-994-3317.
