Pine Barrens Tree Founder Out on a Limb for a Living

sentence for a tree. More often a tree dies as a result of a combination of factors that cause a slow decline. A tree that has a gall would need to be stressed out by something else, which might then lower its resistance and cause it to become overwhelmed and die. “You never like to have to take one down,” said MacInnis’ ground man, Chris Biunno, although they both accept healthy tree removal as one of the realities of the job. MacInnis’ love for tree work really began as a fascination with ropes, he explained. As a 13-year-old kid, he said, his friends got “normal” kid stuff and he got ropes. As a young man, when he started thinking about how he might turn his passion into a profession, he realized he had two choices: move away and become a mountain guide, or stay in New Jersey and learn to climb trees. MacInnis earned the title of 2012 ISA New Jersey State Tree Climbing Champion earlier this year at the competition held at Rutgers University, where he competed with 31 other climbers in five events: work climb, throw line, speed climb, footlock and aerial rescue. The top climbers from the preliminary round (MacInnis placed second) participate in the Master’s Challenge, which puts them in a massive tree and calls upon them to use the combined skills in the aforementioned events. “The competition was, as always, a great time and great opportunity to catch up with other tree guys in the state,” MacInnis said. One of the highlights was having the chance to compete in the Master’s Challenge, a feature added to the New Jersey event only in the last two years, with his former boss and tree climbing mentor, Mark Chisholm, a 19-year consecutive state champion and three-time world champion. As state titleholder, MacInnis then participated in the international competition in Laurelhurst Park in Portland, Ore., Aug. 9 to 15. “I was in Oregon for five days. … The park had 160-foot fir trees and large spreading oaks. Bern’d Strasser from Germany won the competition. He is a veteran of the Internationals, and it was his ninth world title. “I did well in the two speed events, footlock rope climb and belayed speed climb, placing in the middle of the pack. The two judged events, work climb and aerial rescue, brought my Jack Reynolds overall score to the back of the pack, HEIGHT: Rory MacInnis is state titleholder in a tree placing 39th out of 42 male comclimbing competition, so pruning safely is in a day’s work. petitors. I learned many new tricks or many, tree climbing is a rite of childhood. For Rory MacInnis, it’s not only his passion, it’s also his business. “I’m not as spry as I used to be,” said Pine Barrens Tree founder Rory MacInnis with a smirk, but at 28 years old, the professional arborist, licensed tree expert and competitive climber has already scaled thousands of trees in his lifetime, and he doesn’t plan to quit anytime soon. “Eight years of climbing, six days a week, and still loving it!” he said. MacInnis got his start and experience working for Aspen Tree Expert Co. in Jackson, under the tutelage of three-time world tree-climbing champion Mark Chisholm. Then he started his own company four years ago. As an arborist, his focus is on pruning and preservation. He does his best to educate property owners about tree care and the benefits of maintaining healthy trees whenever possible. “I always try to steer people more toward the care side of it,” he said, much preferring to leave a healthy tree standing than take it down. An oak gall, for example (branch tissue that grows over a wasp egg mass), is not necessarily a death

MacInnis called it – is different from timber sports because it specializes in fast rope climbing. It’s really about how fast you can move around, up in big oak trees, 100 feet tall or more. Of course, working in the treetops has its occupational hazards; MacInnis once fractured a vertebra in a fall from 25 feet up. If there was something positive to come out of it, though, the faulty sender that caused him to fall was taken off the market. A typical harness is designed to allow him to “sit” while suspended; for simplicity’s sake, MacInnis said he likes to keep his harness relatively unencumbered by tools, so he keeps just the essentials at hand, chiefly a chainsaw. Next he climbs into his climbing spikes, which attach to his lower legs and hook under his heels, to grip the trunk. Spikes should be used only for removal, he pointed out, since they actually damage the tree and leave unsightly spike marks in the bark every time the climber digs in to get a foothold. He and Biunno share the professional values of speed and efficiency. But perhaps the most valuable piece of equipment in the whole operation is the ropes – more specifically, the knots in those ropes; a climber’s life could depend on them. Every time MacInnis ascends a tree, he noted, he has to have complete confidence in his knots. “I wouldn’t be able to go up and work in the Continued on Page 14

Continued from Page 8 to bring to everyday work and competition and hope to be back at the worlds in the future.” For MacInnis, the experience of the competition is equal parts exhilaration and camaraderie. “When climbing the rope into a big tree, I start to get real excited thinking about the challenge of climbing around in it and getting out on the ends of the limbs,” he said. “Once I get up high and tied into the tree, I feel very focused. Being up high brings together years of experience to make the climb smooth and energy efficient. “My favorite aspect of competing is not even competing; it’s seeing all the other hardworking arborists from all over the state.” Physical Strength, Proper Equipment Essential Tree care work is intensely physical; wrestling tree limbs all day requires a lot of arm and upper-body strength, attested Biunno. But the right equipment can alleviate some of the load (for bigger limbs, pulleys can be rigged to distribute the weight), and proper gear and training help keep the guys safe and protected from injury. Hot days are the hardest. As a distance and obstacle runner, MacInnnis keeps his endurance up, but he relishes the chillier days, when he’s unlikely to break a sweat. Competitive tree climbing – “a niche hobby,”

and assaulted by twigs. As such he cannot overstate the importance of safety gear, especially eye protection. “The one time you don’t wear protection is the time you’ll get hurt,” he said. Different body types have their advantages in tree work – smaller, nimbler guys can get into higher, tighter spots (especially useful for pruning), but bulkier, burly guys can muscle chunks of trunk and handle weightier limbs. Contrary to popular belief, the best way to dismantle a tree is to start with the bottommost limbs and work up, MacInnis and Biunno explained. It’s a process of continually clearing the way underneath, so limbs don’t get hung up as they are lowered. Finally, at the top, with little to no interference, the worker has ample room to maneuver. Once all the limbs are off, the arborist starts sawing off manageable-sized chunks of trunk until the tree is at a safe height to drop it altogether. As in any job, it’s all a matter of experience, MacInnis said. The perspective from up there is thrilling, he admitted. He has sent many of his personal friends up in the harness to get a feel for the experience, and they never forget it, he said. —V.L.

Continued from Page 10 tree if I thought anything was going to fail,” he said. “If you’re scared, you can’t get anything done,” especially in the bigger, badder Monmouth County trees, some measuring 110 to 120 feet tall. On his climbing line he ties a friction hitch, which has a quick-release function that stays secure while he gathers slack to ascend and then allows the line to slide smoothly for the descent. A word to the wise property owner: Anyone who cares about trees should trust only a wellqualified tree company; the workers should be certified arborists and licensed tree experts. “You want to see guys showing up wearing hard hats and eye protection,” MacInnis said. Those designations indicate the crew’s education, experience and dedication to the craft. Pine Barrens Tree is the only company he knows of with those qualifications within a radius of a 20- or 30-minute drive (the next nearest being in Jackson). MacInnis, for example, took classes through Rutgers University to become certified. Every job is at least a two-man operation, which is why it’s vitally important to have a good ground man, MacInnis said. And some jobs are more strategic than others. Often the difficulty level is determined by the proximity of structures, objects and other trees. In the tree, the climber must size up the branches and consider the angles, predict the direction they’ll fall so they don’t hit the house or a shed or come back at the climber. “You don’t really want any wild swinging,” MacInnis called down. Biunno said he likes the climbing, but he has more learning to do. He started in tree work “from the ground up” and said the variety from day to day keeps it interesting. “I hate roller coasters, but I can do this,” he said. Like snowflakes, no two trees are exactly the same. In that sense, the trees have a lot to teach them. “You learn something new every day,” Biunno said. As the ground man, securing the rigging rope and assisting and receiving Jack Reynolds the limbs MacInnis lowers, Biunno is no stranger to The ground man of the team secures the rigging rope and receives getting poked by branches the limbs that the climber lowers, explained Chris Buinno. here are plenty of fish in the sea – or ponds, rather – as one peruses the plethora of water gardens at The Water Garden and Koi Co. on Route 9 in Bayville. The company wants patrons to fully understand the value of koi; it offers tours through its two-acre retail business that might start off with a little fish feeding of the 60some koi of varying types in the company’s 14,000-gallon breeding tank. “If you put your hand with some food in it underneath the water, they’ll actually come up into your hand to eat the food,” said owner Rich Norcross. Customers “get a handful of food and the fish pluck the water out of their hand – it’s a pretty amazing thing. The kids go crazy for it. Actually, some of the parents are a little more obsessed with it than the kids are.” Not that The Water Garden and Koi Co. needs to fish for compliments, as the members of the family-owned business have more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of the landscaping business. OPEN-AIR, CLOSED TO VIEW: After the beach, taking a shower outside in the invigorating air is a shore tradition. The updated version is made with maintenance-free, modular material.

Outdoor Showers With Privacy Are a Practical Possibility

O

n the side of Outdoor Showers’ company truck, you can read the saying “No More Sandy Bathrooms.” Owner Todd Leatherman said that is one of the numerous fringe benefits customers receive if they call on Outdoor Showers, located at 1316 East Bay Ave. in Manahawkin. Leatherman started the business five years ago and moved it to its current building last fall. “A lot of people around here are builders,” he said. “I wanted to specialize in something a little more unique. This is the right area to do it.” With a grandmother who had a summer house in Beach Haven, Leatherman remembers many a time cleaning off in an outside shower after a day at the beach. “They’re a necessity when you live near the beach because otherwise, you’ll just keep clogging up your shower and bathtub drains with sand,” he said. “But now you don’t have to have guests traipse through your house soaking wet or trailing sand from the beach.” However, he said the showers he recalled using are a far cry from the modern structure his company produces. “Back then, the usual outdoor shower was FALL 2012

this wooden, rickety thing that had a little latch,” he said. “It didn’t really give you any privacy. And you had to maintain them often, as they’d get weather-beaten during the winter. You’d have to repaint them or fix the door lock. But what we have to offer is maintenance-free.” Leatherman said the showers feature modular construction with powder-coated (marine grade), stainless steel hardware, vinyl wall panels and removable floors made from maintenance-free decking. All parts are included, and custom colors are available. Pointing to one of his model structures outside at the shop, he said, “If you look at the outside of this, nobody can peek through. It is completely solid. Those old wooden ones often had openings between the wood panels, and a lot of times that wood could easily break. Obviously, privacy is something that is extremely important for a person using an outdoor shower.” Leatherman, who has 15 years’ experience in the construction business, said he has built outdoor showers for little bungalows to multimillion-dollar beachfront homes. “I’ve had some homes where we built Continued on Page 44 24

FALL 2012

Outfit a Luxury Bedroom or Coordinate a Custom Home

F

all is quickly approaching, and outdoor fun is becoming indoor entertainment. It’s time to trade in those beach towels for snugly blankets; time to shut off the air conditioning and let the cool, island breezes waft inside the house through open windows. But the summer guests are gone, and the house could use some freshening up. The floweradorned bedspread just doesn’t seem to fit in anymore. The brightly colored bathroom linens now seem too bold. The draperies in the living room have faded, and the paint in the guestroom is chipping. Where does one even begin? Renovating or sprucing up the house may seem to be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Seeking the help of an interior design specialist can be as easy as it is exciting. Between the Sheets LLC, located at 10th Street and Central Avenue in Ship Bottom, has been offering professional home design assistance for nearly 20 years. The store provides everything from luxury linens and window treatments to flooring and case goods such as dressers and armoires. One of the business’ bedding displays was even featured as “Bed of the Month” on the web site of national purveyor Bella Notte Linens, in August. Co-owners Maryann Schmid and Kristin Nissen opened the shop on Long Beach Island after rooming together at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, now Philadelphia University. They later landed the same job,

working for a local furniture and design store. “We just love textiles,” Schmid said. “When Kristin and I worked together (at the furniture store), we would do all these beautiful things for people. Then it would come to the bedding, and the store would have these dreadful bedspreads made out of polyester. It was horrible, and the clients were left on their own for sheeting. People would have these beautiful rooms and then be stuck going through a department store or catalog to find good, quality linens to finish the job. So that’s how we started,” she explained. Many of the bed sheets offered at Between the Sheets are specially fitted with deep pockets, perfect for over-sized mattresses. Some of the suppliers even offer customizations. Important factors to consider when choosing a bed linen include the quality and type of cotton, the weave and ply of the threads and the method of finish. While thread count, defined as the number of threads horizontally and vertically woven together to make a square inch of fabric, is an important aspect, Schmid said it shouldn’t be the consumer’s only guide when choosing linens. “You could buy a 600-thread count sheet made of long staple cotton that isn’t finished smoothly and end up with pills and a scratchy sheet, whereas if you purchased a 200-thread count fine Egyptian cotton sheet finished to perfection, it will far out last the 600-thread Continued on Page 43

POST-SEASON: The place for awnings after the summer is serviced and stored away.

Fall Is Time to Wash, Store, Protect, Says Giglio Awning

Y

our awnings have protected your house and windows from the summer sun; now it’s time to protect them from winter’s harsh elements. Giglio Awning, located at 7802 Long Beach Blvd. in Harvey Cedars, is a full-service business, and fall is one of the busiest times of year for awning-care, said owner Dave Voris. “Once we are finished for the season, it’s time to wash the awnings, take them down and store them to protect them from the elements,” he said. Having the awnings serviced means they will last for 10 or more vacation years ahead. Washing the awnings is the first step in service. Not only are they saturated first with pollen in the spring, then salt from our refreshing, briny air, but sea gulls, other birds and bugs may have bombarded them as well. Leaving residues in the cloth is just not good for it. Giglio’s team of cleaners uses a mild detergent and soft brushes to loosen and wash away these stains. Next, they service the metal parts of the awnings so they will be ready in the spring. Then, if the customer has indicated, they put a protective boot (customized cover) on the awnings to leave them in place, or remove the awnings for storage. To make things easier for computer-savvy customers, Voris has instituted an electronic service contract this year that allows customers to set up their service time via the company’s web site, giglioawning.com. “Schedule service FALL 2012

with a click of the button,” he said. “We have over 2,000 customers we service in a given year, and we give our customers as many options as we can. Some will want the awnings washed and then ‘booted’ on the house. Others will have washed them themselves and will have us take them down and store them in their garage, while others have us take them and store in our facility until the spring, when we reinstall them. “The web site allows them to choose the service they want and when they want us to service them, and we will comply as long as Mother Nature is cooperating with us that day,” said Voris. The web site also has videos showing the different kinds of service. “They can view it online and do it all electronically,” said Voris, but he added, “That doesn’t mean that we won’t take phone calls, especially from some of our older clients.” Call 609-494-3004 or e-mail giglioawning @ comcast.net. Giglio Awning has been serving customers on LBI and surrounding communities since 1976. “My mantra is to give a lifetime of service and value to my customers,” said Voris. “Like us on facebook to receive discounts and special promotional offers,” he added. “We also do a weekly trivia question every Friday at 5 p.m. for a $50 gift certificate.” —P.J. 34

to extend the lives of their worm-eaten pilings at less than half the price and less aggravation of installing new pilings, say proponents. The Formapile system is simplicity itself. A fiberglass mat is wrapped around a damaged piling. The mat is pre-impregnated with a water-activated resin. When that resin is exposed to water, it hardens, forming an impact-resistant and energy-absorbing rock shield, thus strengthening and protecting the piling. “The resin reacts with salt water and fills in all of the holes the worms bored,” said Brazill. So the resin, which hardens into a concrete-like substance, not only protects the outside of the piling from further invasion by shipworms, but effectively patches the damage they have already created, making the piling as good as – some would say better than – new. Not only does employing the Formapile solution result in considerable savings, but it saves considerable aggravation as well. Continued on Page 44

alk about unintended consequences! Great progress has been made in the past few decades cleaning up America’s waterways. But the removal of pollution from the water has created better conditions for shipworms, a.k.a. “termites of the sea” or “Toredo worms.” They actually aren’t worms at all but a type of saltwater clam, sans shells, that loves to bore into submersed wood such as piers, docks and ship hulls, eventually destroying the wood. “Years ago,” said Capt. Bob Brazill, the proprietor of LBI’s Capt. Brazill’s Full Service Marine, “sailors used to sail up into the New York harbor just to have the toxins kill the marine life on their hulls. But now there aren’t enough toxins to do that.” That’s bad news for owners not only of wooden-hulled vessels, but of docks and piers as well. Replacing a dock or pier is a costly and time-consuming process. There is, Brazill said, an alternative. Capt. Bob has hooked up with a Florida-based company, Formapile Industries Inc., to provide Southern Ocean County’s pier owners a way
