Garages Take a Step Up Conversion Rooms Extend Beach Living in Style

T

he perfect beach home is one that is used to its fullest potential: a vacation spot where friends and family gather to relax and enjoy the scenery. From the eat-in kitchen to the pool deck, every inch of space is lived in, even where you least expect it – the garage. Garage conversion rooms have emerged as another specialty of Reynolds Landscaping. These one-of-a-kind custom rooms may be used for a poolside dining area, a billiard room or a “fully loaded” family lounge. They provide an attractive transition from the back patio to the home living space. A garage conversion room is a step up to a new vista in comfortable shore living. The Reynolds Landscaping team can advise homeowners on amenities that become possible, based upon conditions at each specific location. Images of finished projects reveal a range of options that are as practical as they are stunning. In fact, it becomes hard to imagine the living space without all that it adds to a family’s days and nights. “The garage conversion rooms are designed to have all the amenities of the home – a mini kitchen and bar usually, with a TV and entertainment system and custom lighting,” pointed out Tanek Hood of Reynolds Landscaping. “It can be an outdoor living room where you can open your French doors and let the outside in. “We tailor the space to the family’s needs,” Hood said, considering the homeowners’ style

of entertaining, their outdoor life and their children. “Most of the clients’ requests are driven by the need to have a space on the ground floor that has the convenience of a kitchen,” Hood added. “Some crave a fun space, the ultimate mancave,” Hood jokingly added. Reynolds also designs these spaces to be a transition area from bay or beach into the home – making for a nice entertainment area that has utility and beauty, saving the rest of the house from wear and tear.” “The family can come in from boating on the bay and make a drink or a sandwich, watch a game on TV, and hang poolside without having to go up to the top floor, tracking sand and a wet body through the home just to carry the food and drink back downstairs,” Hood illustrated. Keeping part of the garage as its original use, a garage, is important to some clients, and that, too, can work into the overall design. There are endless possibilities that are tailored to the client’s specific needs and desires. Say goodbye to the traditional outdoor shower and let Reynolds incorporate a spa-like shower into your conversion space, the Reynolds team suggests. A roomy changing area adorned with glass-blocked walls makes for the perfect ending to a day at the beach. The shore’s classic outdoor shower becomes an uncommon experience. Reynolds’ acclaimed lighting division creates magic with light. “The shower lighting is so

Making sure that you have a sound system that is balanced throughout your property is essential in allowing for a seamless transition,” Hood pointed out. The possibilities opened up by a garage conversion are truly endless. Rainy days at the shore are no longer a worry, and a thundershower will never spoil the party. important,” noted Hood. “A lot of these existing showers are dark, but a shower can now incorporate downlights for the safety of your children as well as creating a romantic ambience through glowing glass blocks.” With the expertise that has earned Reynolds acclaim in all aspects of the landscaping business, the company has worked to perfect this newer idea for their clients. The first step is an assessment of a client’s needs, and a detailed overview of the property. Next, correct permitting will be attained by the knowledgeable staff at Reynolds. “One of the things that we’ve really gotten proficient at is advising the clients on their options,” Hood said. “Once we see where your elevations are and where you are located on a floodplain, we then know what limitations may be had and we will design the space to fit.” Storage, winterization of space, and flow are key pieces of design that drive the layout in most situations, he said. As for choice of materials, think organic. “We focus on mostly stone, tile and wood, trying to bring in natural materials, all mindfully chosen for design standards and sustainability to the salt elements we are exposed to here on Long Beach Island.” The wood can be Brazilian hardwood, mahogany or cedar, for instance. Whether it is a clean contemporary look or a traditional beach cottage, the design team works closely with the clients, creating the ideal fit for their lifestyle. Every detail from electrical work, lighting, plumbing and construction are all meticulously observed through the project management of Mark Reynolds. Within the designed parameters, the possibilities for convenience are vast. A wet bar, HOMEFRONT

he deck has become America’s favorite add-on, and no wonder. Architecturally, it adds importance to a house, while cleverly extending indoor living spaces and increasing the usefulness of outdoor areas. It is a great place for kids to play and grown-ups to relax or party. It can be a simple platform or a multi-tiered extravaganza, and it blends easily with walkways, steps and fences in any landscaping plan. Adding custom vinyl fencing, railings and accessories can add just the correct touches to help families enjoy the easy living lifestyle of being down the shore. At Easy Living Vinyl, Pat Jewell and his team of professionals know that for a deck or fencing to be perfect for your home and lifestyle, you need to start with a good plan. “A well-planned deck should complement the house and provide a smooth transition to the

Easy to care for, today’s state-of-the-art vinyl combines functionality with attractive design elements that seamlessly enhance the value of your home, now and for years to come. yard,” he explained. “There are so many things to consider. For example, a deck can be designed for privacy or exposure. It can be located to catch a cool breeze or protect against harsh ocean winds. It can be an elegant setting for parties, an informal outdoor room for family meals, or a secluded spot for a hot tub or sunbathing “People often don’t realize how much a meaningful outdoor environment can add to their daily lifestyle until they call upon us to see the possibilities.” Jewell believes helping people design and visualize their very own successful outdoor environment involves several factors, including his team’s planning and consulting skills and the work ethic of his professional staff. “Our team is an experienced group of people with a common goal of performing and being the best at what they do,” he said. “Outdoor possibilities are infinite, so the whole family needs to sit down and make a wish list. This way you can begin to zero in on a design that fulfills as many of your dreams as possible.” Easy Living Vinyl can provide just about everything needed for enjoying spring and summer in the great outdoors. The company specializes in decking, walkways and patio designs that continue to enhance the beauty, durability and ambience of countless area homes and businesses at an affordable price. “With more than 30 years’ experience in the building industry,” Jewell said, “I’ve put together a professional organization to handle all your outdoor projects, decks, railings or fencing. From your first phone call to your final payment, I personally guarantee you a good experience. “My office staff has been trained to handle your calls quickly and courteously. Our estimates are presented to you in an itemized format, so you know exactly what you are paying for,” he added. “Every job is supervised by a manager, who will organize your job so it can be completed quickly and efficiently. Most of our workers are long-term employees, trained by me, so they know how I SPRING 2012

expect the customer to be treated – to have respect for your home, and take pride in their workmanship. As the owner, I am always here to answer your questions and address your concerns.” Well-built fences offer the homeowner longlasting beauty and security. They are made from durable Royal Crown vinyl products that come with a lifetime guarantee. Each fence post is routed, which means there are no brackets to rust. They’re secured with 80 pounds of concrete and reinforced with heavy-duty aluminum liners to prevent sagging. “Because we make all of our fences, we can turn your job around quickly and customize it, if necessary, to your specific needs or taste. All material is kept in our shop for prompt delivery and installation,” Jewell said. As for decks, the industry has come a long way from the days of splinter-prone boards that attracted stains and mold. New decks and deck rehabs are another specialty of Easy Living Vinyl. Using stateof-the-art digital imaging equipment, Jewell can create a deck to fit any lifestyle or budget. “Our deck design software allows you to see a computer-generated design of your deck, home and landscaping in vivid color,” he said. All types of deck surfaces are offered, including vinyl, composites and, yes, even traditional wood. Fiberglass decks can be accented by professionally applied, custom gel coat colors. Trims and columns cover all exposed wood to eliminate need for painting. Available as well are vinyl posts and wraps, along with fiberglass repairs and surface re-gelling. Jewell is a factory-certified installer of Dry Spaces, which he describes as the ideal product for any second-story deck, creating a usable and completely dry space under any deck, regardless of what type of decking material is on the upper deck. Railings top off your project since Easy Vinyl is one of the area’s leading producers and installers of residential and commercial railings. “We carry a broad selection of spindle styles, Continued on Page 12 10

For instance, do you keep your windows open, or do you use your air conditioner? Are you interested in energy green products, or motorized window treatments?” The Empty Window provides Hunter Douglas products as well as other selections of durable and beautiful materials that customers can touch and feel for themselves to help make their selections. Allen likes the old-fashioned way of doing business – personalized service. “I consider myself an oldfashioned, full-service design company, in that I do use new technology; however, I like a handshake, I like eye contact, I like to show people hand samples of the products; it’s not all about the computer.” Allen offers free consultations by appointment. Her SUV carries samples of fabrics, window shades and working models of blinds to the customer. “I love to give individuality, personalization. Every job is different, and it’s customized to the client’s home, so no two jobs are ever the same,” she said. “I come to your house, I’m going to do your house for you, and your house isn’t Maria Scandale going to look like your neighbor’s, even if you chose the The office of design consultant Cynthia Allen displays a sampling same thing,” she elaborated. of shade and shutter ambience, with fabric adornments. Product lines are frequently updated, and new ideas flow. “I am always adding new products and services. I am always changing to keep people’s interest perked and keep them excited. I love what I do, and I want people to love what they’re buying. “I don’t rush them,” Allen added. “A lot of my customers don’t have money to do the whole house right away, so we may do the house over three years. They’ll call me when they have another room to do.” Allen brings her services to the customer’s home, which has many advantages. “We bring the showroom to you, thus saving you time and, most important, allowing you to focus without interruption on your project,” she said, “and that’s priceless.” A Sampling of Ideas In Window Dressings Seeing the samples, especially within the lighting of your own home, is the best way to choose. But we asked Allen for an overview and a few specific ideas of what’s available. Styles vary – shutters that are very beachy, Hunter Douglas Silhouettes for precise lighting control, woven woods for a woodsy look, draperies that are dressy or casual. There are solar screen shades that are applicable to big windows in a waterfront house because they also

allow visibility to the outdoors. The choices are too numerous to list here, but Allen can outline them to the customer. The decision may be influenced by practical needs – whether the customer seeks privacy; a shield against heat, UV rays or sun glare; whether they want something suited to a rental property; or whether they want touches of elegance for entertaining guests. Or they can have it all in products that combine desirable features. As a Hunter Douglas brochure elaborates, “Beauty and practicality live together at Hunter Douglas in designs that create exceptionally attractive, enjoyable spaces while ensuring privacy, precise light control, energy efficiency and UV protection for your furnishings.” In the Silhouette window shadings, for example, “the Signature S-Vane creates beautiful gradations of light and shadow. Soft fabric vanes are suspended between two sheers, diffusing softened light deep into a room. Tilt the vanes to suit the privacy you desire while maintaining UV protection,” describes Hunter Douglas. Allen demonstrates products with the “LiteRise” feature, where with a light touch of the hand, the blind pushes up with no cord. With Pirouette window shadings, “the gentle pull of a cord lets you change a room’s lighting in a whole new way,” describes the booklet. “Soft, horizontal fabric vanes expand to filter natural light, or contract to give you a perfect outside view. Our revolutionary Invisi-Lift system allows the vanes to float gracefully, and even opened they offer UV protection and reduced glare through the sheer backing.” All Hunter Douglas products have a lifetime warranty. Other proven materials line the workshop at The Empty Window. “I offer a lot of different products,” Allen said, pointing out that in her custom fabric workrooms, cornices and valances can be made, along with draperies, pillows, embellished lampshades and more. “Washable outdoor draperies are wonderful for the person who might like some privacy or ambience in their outdoor sitting areas,” she said. She displayed sheers with European hems that are weighted just enough to stay put at the bottom, and billow toward the top. In the same manner of serenity, but made of different materials, outdoor screen shades are new on the market. Awnings Protect From Sun And Establish Identity

W

ith the mild winter and spring we’ve had, there’s a good chance we could be in for one brutally hot summer. You need to protect not only yourself from the sun, but your home, too, especially on the south and west areas, which catch the brunt of the intense rays. “Now is the time to start planning on your awning, and summer will be coming up fast,” said Devon Karvan, who, with her husband, Jonathan Karvan recently opened Atlantic Awnings at 36 West 80th Street in Harvey Cedars. “My husband and I had some experience in the awning field in the area, and now we felt it was time to establish our own company on the Island.” She notes canvas awnings can take three weeks to complete once the order is filed. But if you wait until summer, the time can be considerably longer. So planning an awning can certainly be part of one’s home improvement plan before the busy summer season begins. Services available at the year-round business include construction of retractable awnings,

window awnings and retractable and stationary canopies. Its software system enables the customer to see digitally enhanced images of what the awning will look like once it is constructed, eliminating any guesswork. The Karvans are not strangers to the area. Devon grew up in Long Beach Township, and Jonathan is from Little Egg Harbor Township. “We know the area and we love it here,” she said. “Now we’re very happy we have an opportunity to serve the area. Eventually, we hope to open a showroom. So far, we’ve had good reception with the homes and the businesses. The nice weather this winter has helped us get off to a good start.” According to the Karvans, the awning market generally consists of residential and commercial installations. The influences in fashion and color are evident in both. While residential awnings tend to be more traditional and conservative in both style and color, the industry is finding new ways to create shade for the outdoor living environment, and now there is a solution for all possible scenarios. The commercial awning buyer, whether it be a restaurant, hotel, retail shop or other business establishment, is not looking merely for a shade. The buyer is looking for a means to establish an identity for the firm. For example, it might be a dignified restaurant with an entrance canopy of dark fabric and brass columns, or a new bar and lounge with an illuminated vinyl awning and colorful graphics. While both are eating establishments, each wants to send a different message to potential customers. The proper design and execution of awnings as a means of advertising will add curb appeal and ensure the message is loud and clear. Devon Karvan said that whether it’s a home or business, awnings will reduce heat gain by 65 percent on southern exposures and 77 percent in areas facing west. “Such protection will help lower cooling expenses,” she said. In addition, awnings for outdoor dining/living spaces will help protect people and pets from harmful UVA and Jack Reynolds UVB rays. Atlantic Awnings owner Jonathan Karvan carries a section of Continued on Page 42 awning to finish a commercial installation.

From Iridescent to Woodgrain, Tile Styles Come in Many Choices

ow in its third year in Lighthouse Plaza in Waretown, Barnegat Bay Tile is dedicated to satisfying flooring needs for homeowners throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties. The showroom is rife with sample tiles in countless colors, textures and sizes, including ceramic, natural stone, porcelain, tumbled and polished marbles and glass, as well as hardwood flooring, to help customers choose the right material for their renovation or new construction project. In addition, brushed metals, oyster glass, stone or porcelain, either singly or combined, can be a great way to enhance cabinets or appliances. Store owners Bradley and Mary Gabe are typically on site to connect with clients, and in addition to simple sales advice, they can provide design consultation and professional installation for kitchens, bathrooms, Florida rooms, basements, entranceways, backsplashes or any other rooms requiring tile flooring. They also offer free estimates. Brad has a manufacturing and engineering background, and has worked as an installer for more than two decades. He can offer fundamental recommendations based on his experience – such as, for example, his suggestion that tile isn’t appropriate for outdoor spaces, although three-season rooms are OK – as well as moredetailed and innovative design tips.

The Gabes opened their original store, Jackson Tile and Marble, more than 12 years ago, and in 2010 they added the newer showroom, along Route 9 North. The Jackson store was awarded “Best Tile Store in Ocean County” for 2009 and 2010 in the Asbury Park Press Readers Choice poll, and the Waretown location has done brisk business since it opened. “We came down here (to Waretown) because we saw a need. People need tile,” said Bradley. “We have a very good track record with the two stores,” due to a combination of quality service and friendly, knowledgeable staff who endeavor to aid customers in creating a design that fits the style of each individual home and homeowner. One of the more popular items recently is wood grain porcelain tile, which mimics various woods, such as hickory, oak, cherry and driftwood. “That’s a few years in,” said Bradley, and has become extremely popular. “It’s smokinghot stuff that we can barely keep in the store.” As Bradley explained, customers often opt for the wood grain tile because they like that porcelain, having been forged in flames, is “indestructible, as well as easy to clean; it can just be wiped off with a wet rag.” Iridescent colored glass, glass within which tiny seashells are captured, and mesh-mounted mosaic tiles are among the other more unusual products available for purchase and installation to help create an attention-grabbing room. In keeping with today’s eco-friendly trends, Bradley said some companies do sell “green” tiles, made with renewable resources and recycled content, but he hasn’t seen them “really take off yet.” Barnegat Bay Tile is located at 1 Lighthouse Drive. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday though Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call 609-693-2313 or visit BarnegatBayTile.com. —J.K.-H.

Engraver Beetles Not Necessarily A Death Sentence for Black Pines

I

ps beetles, also known as engraver beetles, may be getting jealous of all the attention Southern pine beetles have been receiving of late. Alternatively, they may be glad they are not as notorious as their cousins, preferring to remain out of the limelight. The Southern pine beetle has been in the headlines the past couple of years for a very good reason. The southern New Jersey mainland isn’t called the Pine Barrens for nothing. There are about 440,000 acres of pine-dominated forest in South Jersey, and experts are concerned that the beetle could practically wipe them out. According to the state Department of Environmental Protection, the beetle re-entered the state only in 2001 but has already destroyed approximately 26,600 acres of pine trees. Even scarier is the fact that about half that acreage was destroyed in 2010 alone. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service estimates, 80 percent of the pine forest could be impacted within the next 10 years if no action were to be taken. The beetle didn’t cross the Egg Harbor River on its persistent march north until 2008. But could it have already arrived on Long Beach IsJack Reynolds land? “Once they decide what they want, I will use a solder pot on every single connection – whether it’s 20 lights or more – connecting them to a main line with a solder flux. It’s as if the line was never cut. When you do it the other way – the way most electricians do – you twist it as tight as you can and hope they’re all connected because if they’re not, after 10 or 15 years in a sea-salt-heavy environment like ours, they will fail, and no one will ever figure out why that light out there doesn’t work or why there’s an uneven drain on the line. By soldering every connection, it becomes fail-proof.” The landscaping comes into play not only when installing fixtures, but also when making sure the electrical lines are buried properly six inches underground, or hidden from view as well as they can be when hung along a tree. For that, Holzwarth makes use of her window-washing ladders to get the job done. “You’re never supposed to see the bulb, only the effect. I see a 25-foot tree and I’m in heaven because that means you can do moonlighting, which gives an effect as if the moon was shining down on your property, only wherever you direct it to.” Other options include mirror lighting, wall lighting, step lighting, and uplighting, which can be varied light placed at the base of a tree shooting upward, for example. Continued from Page 28 can’t demand the electric company come and put a light up. It’s beautiful here at night, especially in the summer, but if it’s dark and you can’t make use of it, what difference does it make?” Also, many properties are left vacant in the winter; according to Holzwarth, lights with timers are perfect to add visual security. “The homes all over the Island – whether new or more old-fashioned – all have features that you’d want to light up,” said Holzwarth, who emphasized unique colors of houses especially. Lighthouse Landscape covers everything from low-end lighting to high-end, from aluminumcoated fixtures that cost less and last about 10 years to CAST brand bronze fixtures recommended by Holzwarth that cost more initially but last about 50 years. Fixtures alone represent about 50 to 60 percent of the total cost when installing landscape lighting. Holzwarth also recommends investing in CAST brand LED lamps, which, despite being more expensive initially, end up paying for themselves after six years of lower electric bills due to their low voltage. Their circuits are also sealed entirely, allowing them to take the salt water that would damage other lamps. Price range can average $1,500 to $2,000 on the low end to $20,000 to $30,000 on the high end. All work can be plotted out, paid for, and completed in phases, giving customers financial flexibility.

‘Honey-Do Home Repairs’ Done By a Custom Builder

I

In the April 1989 issue of Popular Mechanics, Oldham wrote, “General contractor and master carpenter Ronald Riker helped us produce our bathroom remodeling guide. Riker has the unique ability to articulate what he is doing so that our writers can capture his knowledge and expertise for the readers of PM.” The article written by Cliff Gromer noted that the bathroom was just coming into its own as a place of luxury with cathedral ceilings, whirlpool baths and dressing rooms. “Bathrooms are expanding into the areas of spacious elegance and are often the feature rooms of today’s homes.” The 1990s would mark the beginning of the bathroom as a place of comfort and beauty in its own right. In “The Great Cover-up” by Thomas Klenck, in a 1992 issue, Riker not only explained how to change a concrete deck into an outdoor room by covering it with a multileveled redwood deck, he also supplied the architectural drawings. His editor again praised him and noted, “He’s the guy we like on the job when we can’t do it ourselves.” It’s this kind of positive reinforcement that Continued on Page 36

dle hands are just not Ron Riker’s style. Riker, from Beach Haven, has been in the construction industry for more than 33 years, and though semi-retired from building custom homes, he still likes to keep his hands busy. His new venture: Honey-Do Home Repairs. “We do what your honey won’t,” was an idea that tickled his funny bone. “I wanted to do something more in my ad than just the usual home repair stuff.” And that desire to stand out from the rest has been the hallmark of Riker’s long career. When he was living farther north, in Keyport, one of his longtime customers was Joe Oldham, editor-in-chief for Popular Mechanics during the 1980s and ’90s. Popular Mechanics invented the do-it-yourself magazine. “I worked for him on his house in Aberdeen for 30 years,” said Riker. “And he had me featured in the magazine three times.” Riker was first written up for the job he did remodeling Oldham’s kitchen, and then received a huge spread on three bathrooms he updated. The last project was a redwood deck that covered a concrete patio. “I was the project manager, but I also worked on it; I like to be hands-on,” he said.

Storsberg at Home on LBI Plumbing Company Satisfying Customers Since 1978

B

ecause this was “the winter that wasn’t,” the phones have been ringing a lot earlier than usual at Storsberg Plumbing & Heating Inc. Long Beach Island area residents can be assured that the company is here for them, for the 34th year now. Storsberg Plumbing & Heating Inc. has been in business since 1978 and is family-owned and operated by Don Storsberg, a licensed master plumber, who grew up in Holgate. The office is located at 6105 Long Beach Blvd. in Brant Beach with office hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with emergency service to 9 p.m. seven days a week. “When you stop in or call, Nancy and Renee are happy to answer any questions or schedule any service you require,” said Storsberg. “The process starts here, and a technician will be dispatched to the customer’s house, where he will assess the problem and give an ‘up-front price’ to resolve the issue.” Storsberg added, “In these challenging economic times, we attribute our success not only to our employees, but to our loyal customers, who we sincerely appreciate.” Ask him about energy-saving options that can be incorporated into home upgrades or new construction. “Our vision is to have a positive impact not

only on our customers, but with the environment. A tankless water heater is a great way to save on energy and money, and our water-saving toilet options help save our precious resources,” Storsberg remarked. The company offers service for most plumbing, heating and air conditioning units, as well as installing fixtures, faucets and equipment from most major brands. “We guarantee our work 100 percent. Our customer base has grown considerably, which we attribute to our prompt service and friendly and knowledgeable staff,” the company owner said. “Since we are a local company, we are familiar with the Island and surrounding areas and their unique challenges,” he added. Residents of LBI and the mainland have probably seen Storsberg trucks, especially with the new attention-grabbing colored photographic wrap. (See the Storsberg ad, this issue.) “They are well-stocked shops on wheels, which helps us complete a repair without returning to our shop or a supply house,” said Storsberg. “Our skilled, friendly technicians possess the knowledge and resources to get the job done right the first time.” They can be contacted at 609-361-0600 or online at storsbergplumbing.com. —M.S.

Honey-Do Repairs Continued from Page 34 gives Riker the confidence to tackle any repair job, big or small. I love to work with my hands.” And Riker doesn’t turn down the small jobs, because he knows small jobs sometimes lead to bigger ones. “I once had a homeowner hire me to redo a 16- by 40-foot deck around his pool, and that was because I changed a few light bulbs for him.” Riker’s own home, on Bay Avenue in Beach Haven, is distinctive for its purple door and lavender siding. His wife likes the shade, and Riker grew partial to it. He built the house himself in 1999, but the couple has lived in Beach Haven since 1984. The retired union carpenter started construction work when he still in high school in Keyport, working Jack Reynolds for a boat works. “That’s when boats were made of wood and had those big flying bridges,” he remembers. He Ron Riker in front of his own home, which he built on Bay Avenue in Beach Haven. Continued on Page 38 SPRING 2012

is a licensed contractor and a certified building inspector and knows the local building codes. In this economy, some may not be thinking about major renovations, but small repairs shouldn’t be put off, as they can lead to major repairs, said Riker. If, for instance, a secondstory deck is left to deteriorate, it can lead to tragedy or a lawsuit, he noted. On the day of the interview for the HomeFront, Riker was about to finish installing cedar handrails on a deck in Surf City before going on to another job. “I do one job at a time. I always return phone calls, and I show up when I say I will; people appreciate that.” Riker often gets work through referrals from satisfied customers, and he is satisfied with the home repair business. “I like a variety of work. One day I could be hanging a door, the next day I could be building a deck; it breaks up the monotony. “My wife, Kathy, has a honey-do list, and she asks me all the time, ‘Why are you doing everyone else’s honey-do list? Why not mine?’ and I say, ‘They pay me!’” Actually, Riker admits to being happily married for 50 years. To contact Honey Do Home Repairs, call 609 492-3749 or 609-290-2195. —P.J.

light things and give a glow off everything. Some people might want to just create a safe walkway or illuminate an entertaining environment at night, and that’s fine.” All lighting work comes with a 100 percent guarantee; any work a customer is unsatisfied with can be removed or adjusted and a full refund be given back if necessary. “This is not a low-cost product, but it’s also not a high risk for the customer.” Besides the benefits of landscape lighting seen at night in plain view, the fixtures themselves add a small percentage of value to a home. Also, having an illuminated landscape might make selling a property easier by creating an impressive “wow appeal” for nighttime visitors possibly interested in buying. “This is painting with light. It’s an upgrade. The enjoyment is visual as well as emotional.” Holzwarth also suggests regular maintenance of lighting installations, offering options for annual or biannual checkups for $120 or $240 per year respectively, plus the cost of whatever might need to be replaced or installed. Free with any installation is a printed photo book Hozwarth will make personally of the work that has been completed. “I’m not doing that to try to sell more lamps. I’m in the business to serve the customer and the outdoor areas here. I do it because I love it.” The phone number is 609-494-7373. —M.M.

be time to plant replacements. Kennedy said a professional should be consulted then as well. “Should people have to remove their black pines, I want them to know they don’t have to replace them with just the Leyland cypress or cedars, which is what many people are doing. You don’t want to create a new monoculture. There are plenty of other species out there that can grow and thrive on LBI.” If a new monoculture replaces the old on Long Beach Island, said Kennedy, the treeloss problem may be solved, but only for a short while. Sooner or later another bug will attack, and any monoculture could quickly be wiped out. Just look at the threat to the Pine Barrens! Kennedy has been in the business since he was 17 years old. “I’m now 45 – I can’t believe it.” He said his high school girlfriend’s father was a landscaper. He didn’t marry his high school sweetheart, but he did fall in love with the field. Nathan Foote, the owner of Greenwood Tree Services Inc., has also been around the tree business for quite some time. “I took over the company in 2010, but it has always been a family-owned business,” said Foote. “I think my parents started it in, oh, 1998. I’ve been taking care of trees for a long time.” Continued on Page 42

Continued from Page 26 the collar. If a tree’s collar is covered up with mulch, a condition called collar rot can result. The tree, in response, sends out electrical and pheromone signals. Ips beetles pick up on the signals and move in for the kill. So, said Kennedy, the first step in saving a tree from an Ips infection is to “remove the over-mounded soil.” Then, he said, a tree, if it appears to a trained eye to be vigorous enough to survive, can receive an “inoculation” – an injection with a pesticide (he kept the name to himself as a trade secret) to kill what would seem to be the relatively few already-invading beetles and to protect the tree against new arrivals. Kennedy doesn’t advise people to selfdiagnose their trees. If they do, he said, they’ll run off and buy common insecticides, then bombard their trees with them, and, of course, most of the insecticide would run off into the bay. Instead, he urges people to seek professional advice, and the sooner the better. Indeed, he urges people to have their trees inspected before there is even a sign of trouble. Early detection of a beetle infestation is equivalent to early detection of a disease by a doctor. What if it is too late and your Japanese black pines are doomed? Well, then it will

The fully licensed and insured business, which always specialized in planting, trimming, pruning, stump grinding and emergency removal, has grown through the years. Foote now has a dozen employees and a 60foot aerial lift. “I guess what separates me from other tree services is that we try to do everything by the book – the newest book. Everybody in the company goes away once a year for up-to-date training,” said Foote. When he met Kennedy a couple of years ago, he envisioned even greater things. Kennedy, he said, not only knows how to plant trees, prune them and trim them, he also knows how to keep them healthy and how to treat them when they’re sick. Now, said Foote, Greenwood can plant a tree and follow it through life, tending to its every need. “I’m very excited about where we’re going,” he said. He should be. Between the Ips beetle on LBI and the rapidly approaching Southern pine beetle on the mainland, Foote and his company should be plenty busy for a long time. Greenwood Tree Service Inc. is located at 391 Main St. (Route 9) in West Creek. The company’s phone number is 609-296-5335. —R.M.

Atlantic Awnings offers more than 800 solid and striped color patterns, and outdoor fabric companies available include Sunbrella, Dickson, Sattler, Tempotest, Recacrill, Main Street, Ferrari, Herculite, Patio 500 and Phifertex. Devon said today’s fabrics are generally warranted for five to 10 years but, with proper maintenance and care, should last much longer. The exposure of the awning and its care will greatly determine its life. “Our aluminum frames are guaranteed for a lifetime,” she said. But Atlantic Awnings’ work is far from done once the structure is installed. The company offers year-round maintenance including professional cleaning, professional stain removal, fabric sealant, rehangs, custom installation, replacement parts and emergency service calls. They will also assist homeowners by helping them regularly maintain their awnings. “Your awning is an exterior product,” the company says. “In the same way you wouldn’t leave your automobile outside without washing it for very long, you’ll also need to clean your canvas awning to preserve its good looks and service life.” Free estimates are available.
