The American Bar at The Savoy, reviewed: A triumph of evolution

"We've been so close and today was the day all our hard work paid off. I had no idea we'd win, because I have so much respect for all the bars in the top ten. It all felt very new, very interesting, because this year lots of bars finished in different positions. WATCH

Mr Lyan's British Mule "I love Dandelyan, it's my neighbourhood bar, just across the river from us. We'll try to hold onto the title for next year, we just need to work even harder. We'd be very happy to keep it, but if it doesn't happen Though the happy World’s to Best Bar awardswith was founded in 2009, we'll be celebrate someone else."this year was the first time it was run by new owners: William Reed Business Media, the same company that stages the World’s Best Restaurant Awards. Ryan Chetiyawardanan said the awards were as good for London as for his bar Dandelyan: "To have numbers one and two on the list be London just shows how ahead of the curve what's happening in London is. It's amazing and to be part of that, it's just incredible. The list is spreading to new places and new styles and that's so wonderful to see, it's amazing to see what else can be done with drinks. "The American bar is an institution, it's one of those places that every young bartender is always excited to go to and get a seat at the bar and get a drink. Declan and Erik are exactly the right team to bring it into a new era. "Do I think we can topple them next year? Not at all. I'm really proud of what we do but it's an institution. I would love Dandelyan to be around in 120 years, like them, that would be incredible and we've given it enough room to expand and evolve. I would love to say it'll be there but it's very hard to lay those kind of legacies." It was the fifth year the awards have been held in London. The list decided by a panel of over 500 anonymous drinks specialists across six of the world’s seven continents, and includes bars from all of them.

The World's 50 Best Bars for 2017 Announced: The American Bar at London's Savoy Hotel Wins Top Spot

American Bar in London’s Savoy Hotel took the top honors at the World’s 50 Best Bars 2017. As last year’s No. 2, the bar helmed by head bartender Erik Lorincz dethroned New York City’s The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog—and rightly so. Dead Rabbit, the famed bar in New York’s Financial District, had been No. 2 in 2014 and 2015 before it finally won the highest distinction last year. But this year the multilevel Irish bar that Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry opened to much ballyhoo in 2012 dropped four spots—from No. 1 to No. 5.

It's the climax of London Cocktail Week, an eight-year-old martini-fueled fiesta that commandeers the capital’s bars each fall, which means the World’s Best Bar awards has announced its annual list of the world's top 100 drinking dens. Last week, organizers trailed numbers 51-100, which included beloved mainstays like New York’s Death & Company alongside new arrivals such as Red Frog in Lisbon. But last night's grand reveal of the top 50 bars took place at a booze-soaked bash, somewhat incongruously hosted in London’s Southwark Cathedral. The entire list was compiled by a globe-spanning panel of experts, comprised of writers, bartenders, and industry execs: Each nominates seven bars they’ve visited in the past year, three of which must be from a country other than their own, before a final round of voting is cast. Even so, this year’s top five reinforced the long-held maxim that New York and London are the centers of cocktail culture. Last year’s winner Dead Rabbit and The Nomad bar joined London’s Connaught and Dandelyan, inside the Mondrian Hotel. in particular. The tiny city-state snagged several slots for venues like molecular mixology specialist Operation Dagger and highest-ranked new entry, Atlas, which claims its stock of more than 1,000 gins is the largest in the world. The U.S. still made an impressive showing, with more than a dozen bars making the final cut, from Miami’s funky Broken Shaker to New York’s Cuban-themed Black Tail, the winner of Best New Opening. There was particularly loud cheering at the mention of Tommy’s in San Francisco, a family-run Mexican restaurant whose beloved owner Julio Bermejo devised the Tommy’s Margarita in the 1990s. He subbed orange liqueur out for agave syrup, to add freshness and lower the alcohol kick; it’s now a common alternative to the traditional recipe on cocktail menus worldwide.

This year’s U.K. winner is helmed by Erik Lorincz and Declan McGurk, and has been a staple of the cocktail world for over 125 years. The World’s Best calls it a “perfect bar” and “one of the most important cocktail destinations open today.” Related: 50 Bars Worth Traveling to Around the World London’s American Bar isn’t the only representative from the U.K. on this year’s list, with London’s Dandelyan, Connaught Bar, and Bar Termini all breaking the top 10. Still, the U.S. takes the prize for the country with the most winners at 13, including seven bars in New York. They include The NoMad at No. 3, Dead Rabbit at No. 5, Attaboy at No. 8, Dante at No, 16, Blacktail at No. 32, Employees Only at No. 37, and Mace at No. 42. Other U.S. winners hail from San Francisco, Miami, and Chicago. Related: 9 Things Bartenders Wish You Knew About Tipping Asia is also well-represented on the 2017 list, with Singapore taking six wins (including the new bar Atlas at No. 15) and other winners in Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Judges described the 128-year-old bar as “one of the most important cocktail destinations open today” and “at the forefront of the cocktail world” for over a century. Legendary bartenders including Ada Coleman - one of only two women to hold the position and inventor of the Hanky Panky cocktail - and Harry Craddock - one of the most famous bartenders of the 1920s and 1930s - have worked at the watering hole. The American Bar at The Savoy in London has been named the best bar in Europe at this year’s Mixology Bar Awards in Berlin. The awards, held alongside the Bar Convent Berlin trade show this week, also presented the award for best European mixologist to Rémy Savage (pictured below) for his work at Little Red Door in Paris as he prepares to become head bartender at Artesian at The Langham hotel in London in November. The title of best new European spirit or bar product went to Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto, the aperitivo launched last year by Giuseppe Gallo. The Europe-wide categories, introduced at the Berlin-based Mixology Bar Awards last year, also included best new European bar which went to Dr Stravinsky in Barcelona, opened by Lito Baldovinos and Enric Rebordosa. The other nalists in this category were three in London – Coupette, Swift and Untitled – plus Antique American Bar in Bratislava in Slovakia. The award for The American Bar at The Savoy, and its team including head bartender Erik Lorincz (pictured), followed its rise to the number-one spot in the World’s 50 Best Bars league table last week. The other nalists for best European bar were Dandelyan at the Mondrian London hotel, Dry Martini in Barcelona, Little Red Door in Paris and Schumann’s in Munich. The rest of the awards, which cover Germany, Switzerland and Austria, saw one bar sweep three categories: One Trick Pony in Freiburg in south-west Germany won both new bar of the year and bar menu of the year and also the title of mixologist of the year for bar manager Jan Jehli. The evening also saw the presentation of the Special Award for Lifetime Achievement to veteran Swiss bartender Peter Roth. The Zurich-based bartender has a career spanning more than 40 years behind dierent bars, over 30 of which he spent as bar manager at Zurich’s Kronenhalle Bar. Full list of winners

2017’s best bar in the world is right here in the UK

Monthly Unique Browsers: 2, 351, 642 While there are any number of shiny new bars competing for our custom, with sparkly cocktails drawing us in like mixology-loving moths to a basil-infused, candy-floss-topped, smoke-in-your-face, drink-through-a-conch flame (atop a retro enamel camping mug, natch), sometimes we yearn for the classics. Well, 2017’s very best bar in the world has been announced, and it’s a Martini glass of old-school glamour right here in the UK. The American Bar in London hotel The Savoy has topped the ninth annual World’s 50 Best Bars awards, beating locations in New York, Shanghai and Paris with its rich history and precisely executed cocktails. The elegant bar – a mere 128 years old – is world-renowned, having spawned the The Savoy Cocktail Book and hosted any number of big names from the worlds of theatre, film, TV and politics over the decades, as well as legendary bartenders Ada Coleman, Harry Craddock and Peter Dorelli. The Savoy''s American Bar is known for its sumptuous decor, precise cocktails and rich history Synonymous with luxury, the interior is all warm creams and rich woods – but its pleasingly retro Art Deco vibes (enhanced by the house jazz pianists, of course) don’t mean that the menu is immune to innovation, with the new ‘Coast to Coast’ list highlighting ingredients from across Britain, such as cobnuts, sunflower honey and roasted barley syrup.

In case you were after any more reasons to drink this weekend, last night it was announced that the two best bars in the world are right here in London. The American Bar at The Savoy (https://www.timeout.com/london/bars-and-pubs/american-bar-at-the-savoy) was awarded the top prize of World's Best Bar, followed in second place by the South Bank's much-loved Dandelyan (https://www.timeout.com/london/bars-pubs/dandelyan) at last night's World's 50 Best Bar Awards. News comes just weeks after Dandelyan was named World's Best Cocktail Bar at New Orleans' Spirited Awards (https://www.timeout.com/london/blog/its-ocial-thebest-bar-in-the-world-is-in-london-072417), showing that there's a lot of love out there for London's drinking scene. Further down in the top ten was the Connaught Bar (https://www.timeout.com/london/bars-and-pubs/the-connaught-bar) at number 4, with Bar Termini (https://www.timeout.com/london/bars-pubs/bar-termini) – the winner of Time Out London's Bar of the Year (https://www.timeout.com/london/bars-and-pubs/the-time-out-london-bar-awards-2017) prize – picking up the accolade of 9th Best Bar in the world. In at No1... Savo y’s Am erican Bar What is it: Oh, it’s only the oldest cocktail bar in the whole country, an icon for bars from around the world to use as the benchmark, the proving-ground for the very first "celebrity bartender" back in 1903, and now the owner of one shiny Greatest Cocktail Bar on Planet Earth trophy. What the judges said: “At the forefront of the cocktail world for more than 125 years… But this is no cocktail museum of well-worn classics peddled to tourists – the current stewards are only looking forward.” The clever alternative: Let’s saaaay Disrepute, insofar as it ticks the "American" and "Historic" boxes. Yes yes, it’s only one year old, but here’s the thing: it’s built upon the foundations of the Kingly Court’s infamous Kingly Club, a hangout for Hollywood’s old-school cool.

American Bar at London’s Savoy has been voted the World’s Best Bar at the World's 50 Best Bars Awards 2017. Other hotel bars followed closely: Dandelyan from the Mondrian London, and Connaught Bar at The Connaught. While London leads the city rankings, the US is home to the most bars on the list, showing their extensive cocktail heritage and buoyant contemporary cocktail scene. This year 14 bars are included and with four New York bars challenging in the top 10. Bars from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago follow New York’s lead to place the US as the number one country on the list.

Now in its ninth year, the prestigious awards ranked Melbourne's iconic Black Pearl at number 22, the same spot it claimed in 2016's list. This year, however, the bar backed it up with a few extra accolades, scooping the gong for Best Bar in Australasia and honoured with the title of Legend of the List, for its efforts in making the cut each year the awards have been held. Sydney bar The Baxter Inn also made a return to the list, this time clocking in at number 45 and rounding out the Australian contingent. Taking out top spot, along with the title of Best Bar in Europe, was The American Bar at London's Savoy Hotel. This is a win for us Aussies also — the international cocktail icon just announced it'll take over The Black Pearl and Sydney's Eau De Vie for a series of pop-ups later this month. London again proved the most represented city in the list, honoured with eight top 50 placings. And now, if you want to really treat yourself – to a world-class cocktail, no less – you only have to travel to the capital, because four of the world's top 10 bars are in London, including the world number one.

There are few things we enjoy more than spending our hard-earned cash on cocktails with mates at the end of a tough week, and there's no shortage of watering holes around the UK to satisfy our urge when payday rolls around. The ranking is decided by a vote of over 500 industry experts from around the world, so if The American Bar is good enough for them, it's most definitely good enough for our Friday night drinks. We'd better start contributing to our fancy-cocktails-fund now.

Savoy Hotel’s American Bar emerges as the top winner of The World’s 50 Best Bars Monthly Unique Browsers: 703, 152

London conquers at the annual rankings as Savoy Hotel’s American Bar replaces New York’s The Dead Rabbit to be the top bar in the world, followed closely by Dandelyan in Mondrian London. Oct 10, 2017 | By Pameyla Cambe

American Bar, Savoy Hotel

London’s Southwark Cathedral played host to the 2017 edition of The World’s 50 Best Bars on September 5, gathering some of the industry’s top mixologists from speakeasies, local watering holes and hotel bars. The location of the annual gala, which is held to highlight the best bars around the world, is hardly a coincidence; that night, London took home the most number of spots on the list, including the first place. Ironically, London’s top winner is the American Bar of The Savoy Hotel. Savoy Hotel’s storied hotel bar effectively knocks last year’s winner, The Dead Rabbit, off of its throne. The New York bar now sits at fifth place, sharing the top 10 list with two other bars from the city: Attaboy at the eighth place, and The NoMad Hotel ranked the highest of the three at the third spot. As its name would suggest, American Bar was one of the first bars to introduce Londoners to the fashionable American-style “cocktail” drink, which became popular in the late 19th century. Besides boasting a legacy that stretches back more than a century, the bar is also run by a string of professionals who pull off their jobs with mastery and skill. American Bar’s 11th bartender, Erik Lorincz, is no stranger to accolades for his own abilities, having previously been named the Best International Bartender at the 2011 edition of Tales of the Cocktail.

Bartender Erik Lorincz at The American Bar, Savoy Hotel

The world’s best bar would be nothing without its drinks, and the menu at the American Bar is one of the imaginative variety. Entitled “Coast to Coast”, the menu takes guests on a liquid journey across Britain, aspiring to evoke the island’s verdant landscape, folklore, history and characters from the North to the South. The inventive cocktails are inspired by everything from the Garden of England in Kent and the Sherwood Forest to London’s Art Deco era and the Edinburgh Castle. Naturally, many of these poetic concoctions are on the pricey side. For example, The Arthur’s Seat is a £30 cocktail made with Royal Brackla 16-year-old malt whisky, wild honeysuckle Cocchi Rosa aperitif, wine, honey water, raspberry vinegar and blossom bitters. American Bar was accompanied by several other London-based establishments on the top 10 list, such as Connaught Bar (#4) and Bar Termini (#9). Mondrian London’s botanicthemed Dandelyan, which won the Best International Hotel Bar at this year’s Spirited Awards, came in at a close second. Across the list of 50 winners that encompasses 24 cities in 19 countries, Europe and the US made up a big share with 19 and 13 spots respectively. Asia had 12 addresses on the list, with Singapore’s Manhattan Bar being the best in the region at seventh place. Shanghai’s Speak Low came in at 10th place. Down under, Melbourne’s Black Pearl came out as the top bar in Australasia. Mexico City’s Licoreria Limantour represents the best of Latin America while Tel Aviv’s Imperial Craft is at the forefront of the bar scene in the Middle East and Africa.

128 year old American Bar at The Savoy, one of the most iconic venues in bartending history, was last night named World’s Best Bar 2017 – and has immediately topped our must-revisit list. Where many London bars try to create an air of faux-retro glamour with a bit of velvet upholstery and a waiter in a bowtie, the American Bar is the genuine article. And it can thank its rich history for its sense of style. You could quite literally write a tome documenting the history of the bar – it opened the same year as the Eiffel Tower was completed (1889, FYI) – and the famous faces that have walked through its doors over the years. We’re talking Frank Sinatra and Marlene Dietrich here, none of that Kardashian nonsense. By the early 20th century, the concept of transatlantic flight had evolved from something completely terrifying to extremely fancy, leading to an influx of fashionable Americans in Britain. In addition to their wealth they brought with them cocktails and country music. We Brits were particularly interested in the former, and responded by opening a bunch of ‘American Bars’ (0/10 for creativity). Not only is The Savoy’s version the last remaining bar of its kind, it’s also the oldest surviving cocktail bar in the UK. Even more pertinent are the legendary figures that once stood behind the bar: inventor of the Hanky-Panky and celebrity bartender of the early 1900s Ada Coleman (you know she would’ve been slinging drinks on the Victorian equivalent of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch) and her successor, Harry Craddock, who penned bartender bible The Savoy Cocktail Book. Now under the expert stewardship of Declan McGurk and Erik Lorincz, the cocktail programme is as pioneering as it was all those years ago – and with that kind of old-school finesse that only The Savoy could dish out.

Formel-1-Pilot Lewis Hamilton (32) will gern als Modeschöpfer durchstarten.
