Six Rooster Watches for Chinese New Year

London's Savoy, the first hotel in Britain to have electricity and elevators, remains one of the city's most luxurious hotels and in recent years has launched a number of deluxe suites. The Savoy's Royal Suite, which opened in July 2016, spans the entire Thames riverside of the fifth floor. Other hotels in the capital offer similar luxury with their "super suites", accommodation of a certain size, opulence and a price tag to match.

Next up? The seven summits. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts; Raffles Hotels & Resorts

All avid travelers—whether they admit it or not—have a running tally of the countries they've visited. Linked to an ongoing action: It might take a few minutes to remember them all, but for Lee Abbamonte, a 38-year-old Connecticut native who's turned traveling into a lifestyle, it's far easier. By the age of 32, he'd been to every single NO country and six years later, he still holds the title of the youngest American to check every nation off their list. He has also managed to turn those travels into a career, running a number of businesses in Summary: international real estate, high-end tours, and media. Favorite hotel? The best city hotel I think I’ve ever stayed in would be the Raffles in Istanbul. What a hotel. The Savoy in London is up there too. For a resort vibe, it would be tough to beat the Four Seasons in the Seychelles.

My luggage was taken off me as I was getting out of my taxi and I did not see any luggage again until after I got to my suite. Fabiona greeted me in the elegant lobby and checked me in sitting at a desk in a separate room. She was warm, chatty and friendly. Waiting for The Suite While waiting for my suite I paid to use the WiFi only to find it did not work and the Concierges gave me a code and said I did not need to pay. 4 SMART KITCHENS

Life in the kitchen is about to get truly clever: GE’s smart kitchen island has touchscreens to guide you through recipes, while the Samsung Family Hub fridge works with an app to order groceries. Other smart kitchen appliances on sale include stovetops and ovens that integrate with extractor fans. And if you can’t be bothered to cook, Moley will this year install the world’s first robotic kitchen in Europe, where a robot chops and cooks dishes from a library of recipes. CSW

5 GOAT ON THE MENU

This delicate, musky meat is on the up. Sales at Cabrito, the UK’s main supplier, increased by a third last year. Impressive health credentials add to its appeal: it’s lower in fat than beef or pork and rich in potassium. Sager + Wilde in east London threw a goat taco party last summer; it’s on top menus, too — from Romy Gill’s pulled shoulder to kid offal terrine at St John. RW

6 SOFTAILS

Teetotalism will be a breeze this year, with Seedlip’s new nonalcoholic spirits and Botonique’s alcohol-free fizz introducing herbal options. The hottest bars leading the booze-free charge include the Savoy’s American Bar, whose jubilee sling contains pine-infused apple juice, camomile syrup and rose soda, and Dandelyan, which serves the wild thing — a mix of Seedlip Spice 94, ylang-ylang and herbal tonic. All the flair and flavour without the headache. RW

The American Bar, London Since opening in 1889, the elegant American Bar at The Savoy Hotel, where you can sip beautiful drinks while a pianist tinkles out tunes, has become a favourite London pilgrimage for cocktail addicts. Author of The Savoy Cocktail Book Harry Craddock worked here, and the Hanky Panky cocktail was invented within its walls. Read more: the best hotels in central London CREDIT: ALAMY

For Valentine's Day, Kaspar's Seafood Bar and Grill at The Savoy is asking its guests to give up their phones. If the thought of that makes you twitch, this is definitely the date place for you. You'll hand over your handset on arrival. Don't worry, it'll be kept safely in your own individual pouch, which you can take home at the end of the evening. The set menu brings fresh fish and meats from the grill, all perfectly matched with Champagnes and wines, pudding or cheese. About Kaspar's Seafood Bar and Grill The legend of Kaspar the Cat lives on in Kaspar's Seafood Bar and Grill, The Savoy's brasserie style restaurant which opened in May 2013 in place of the River Restaurant that emerged from the hotel's Ă‚ÂŁ220 million renovation completed in 2010. Beaufort Bar at The Savoy.

Salted caramel eclairs at The Beaufort Bar There’s something about salted caramel that still screams luxury despite it being pretty much everywhere nowadays. The Beaufort Bar at The Savoy has a sultry vibe with lots of shimmering gold and black, plus beautiful art deco features. Perch, people-watch and sip while contemplating which of the sweet treats to order from the bar menu. This remains our favourite: a glorious puff of cream and sweet-savoury caramel. TASTE OF HISTORY

London’s oldest restaurants are still making their mark on the capital’s ever-changing dining scene. Hugo Campbell-Davys shares his pick of the most characterful

Quo Vadis This historic West End institution has changed hands many times since Pepino Leoni opened it in 1926. It’s now under the care of Sam and Eddie Hart of Barrafina and Fino acclaim – having been previously run by Marco Pierre White and Damien Hirst in 1996. The Hart brothers have since taken over, installing Jeremy Lee in the kitchen, and recently re-opened following a refurbishment to marks its 90th anniversary. Room has been made to accommodate the original Barrafina tapas bar within the ground-floor dining room and there is also a second restaurant on the first floor for Quo Vadis’s members, with a menu featuring traditional fare such as smoked eel sandwich as well as veal shoulder and crab soup.

Wiltons Taking its first incarnation as a stall selling oysters, shrimps and cockles in 1742, it could be argued that Wiltons is the oldest restaurant in London. Founded by George William Wilton, it soon grew to become a fishmonger shop in 1805 with a sit-in oyster room near Trafalgar Square. However it wasn’t until 1840 that the first Wiltons seafood restaurant opened in St James’ Ryder Street. It has been in Jermyn Street since 1984. Wiltons has consistently enjoyed a reputation as the epitome of fine British dining in London and is synonymous with immaculately prepared oysters, wild fish and game. Its first Royal Warrant was received in 1884 as Purveyor of Oysters to Queen Victoria, and a second as Purveyors to the Prince of Wales. Following a newly decorated oyster bar there a sensitive refurbishment is expected to take place this summer.

Rules

Commonly cited as the oldest restaurant in London, Rules in Covent Garden has been serving customers since 1798 when it was founded by Thomas Rule, and still specialises in traditional British food including classic game, oysters, pies and puddings. In over 200 years, spanning the reigns of nine monarchs, it has been owned by only three families, and throughout its long history the tables have been crowded with writers, artists, lawyers, journalists and actors – captured in literally hundreds of drawings, paintings and cartoons on the walls all around. Guests have included everyone from Charles Dickens and Laurence Olivier to Clark Gable and Charlie Chaplin. The restaurant owns its own estate in the High Pennines where all its game is sourced – on which it has built a solid reputation.

Simpson’s-in-the-Strand Simpson’s-in-the-Strand is one of London’s most historic landmark restaurants. Originally opened in 1828 as a chess club and coffee house – The Grand Cigar Divan – Simpson’s soon became known as the “home of chess”. It was to avoid disturbing the games in progress that the idea of placing large joints of meat on

Located in a Grade II listed building on Queen Victoria Street, City stalwart Sweetings is probably the oldest fish and oyster restaurant in London and has been serving up signature dishes (including West Mersea oysters, lobster salad and smoked eel) to busy Londoners since 1889. In its 124-year venerable history, the “very superior oyster rooms” has been owned by six different people and its nostalgic charm shows that little seems to have changed – which is a good thing.

RECIPE: This Victorian-Inspired Buttery Cocktail Is The Ghost Of Christmas Yes Jack Rear in TASTY When it comes to restaurants in London, they don't come much more historic and fancy than Simpson's In The Strand. The restaurant has been a favourite of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of Sherlock Holmes) and Charles Dickens, and they've used their rich historical connections to come up with a very special winter cocktail that they'll be serving in their 'Knight's Bar' this Christmas. Unfortunately, not all of us can afford to make our way down to London, much less get a place at one of the fanciest restaurants in town. Luckily, we've been given access to the recipe for the special 'Belle's Burned Butter Alexandra' cocktail so we can make it at home. And you'll be pleased to know that it's easy as heck to create! Ingredients:     

35ml Dry gin 15ml Beurre Noisette Washed Genever 50ml cream 20ml Creme de cacao 10ml Vanilla Gomme Syrup

To create it, simply shake all the ingredients with ice then double strain into a chilled glass, and garnish with nutmeg. Easy peasy!

Where is ITV drama The Halcyon filmed?

By Radio Times staff Monday 9 January 2017 at 6:00PM Fancy turning back time and spending a weekend at The Halcyon, ITV's plush hotel? You're not alone. The actors were bowled over by the scale and intricacy of the set. “If you woke up on this set you’d think you were in a real hotel," says Jamie Blackley, who plays Freddie Hamilton, the proprietor's sulky son. "It’s incredible. It’s so beautiful with lots of little details. You can go upstairs and you have the corridors and rooms. The royal suite is really beautiful. It’s like a different world. I’ve nearly fallen asleep on one of the beds. I also love the kitchen. It’s so intricate with all of the equipment.” Olivia Williams – aka the proprietor's snobby wife and Freddie's mother, Lady Hamilton – was equally entranced by the vast set. “It’s pretty extraordinary and the detail is so beautiful; all the statues and every light fitting; the art work is wonderful. “What The Halcyon has to be is a place that is a little bit magical and a little bit heightened. The outside was grey and dreary in the Blitz. And you came into the hotel and there was light, music, dancing and champagne. So we really want those scenes to sparkle. And they do.” Of course, there are plenty of grand old hotels that are every bit as luxurious in London. Here are three that inspired The Halcyon and weren't blown up by ITV... The Savoy

Where? The Strand, with views of the River Thames When was it built? The Savoy opened on 6 August 1889. Inspired by America's opulent hotels, it was Britain's first luxury hotel and boasted electric lights, electric lifts and hot and cold water on tap. How many rooms? 268 Famous guests? Edward VII, Oscar Wilde, Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, The Beatles, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra (who also performed here) What happened during WWII? The Savoy boasted the smartest air raid shelters in London, but business suffered because of a manpower shortage, food rationing and bomb damage. Winston Churchill often took his cabinet to lunch here, and Charles de Gaulle was fond of the Grill Room. Business picked up when the US entered the war. How much is the cheapest room tonight? £426 for a superior queen room For more information: fairmont.com/savoylondon

make conversation. Once the music started, our conversation for the entire night consisted of nothing more than “Oh, I love this one!”, “Would you like a drink?” and “You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only 17”. Of course, at every retro disco there comes the Abba moment. What’s a man of intelligence and pop refinement to do? In the past, I’d try to resist the herd mentality that comes with the opening chords of Dancing Queen. Now I’m older, and I realise that when it comes to Abba, resistance is useless. The Jolly Divorcee was singing along at the top of her lungs — and so was I.

I can see why COUPLES love to go dancing: you don’t have to MAKE conversation

D O L LY Dolly Alderton, 28, has form: her previous dating adventures include a fling with a Tinder playboy and a run-in with a Sexy Guru. She’s still looking. I feel like social media is positively burning up with the embers of my old flames at the moment. The Great Love got married on a beach, the Sexy Guru’s got some new Sexy Girlfriend. He thinks she has sexy wrists and has proclaimed undying love for them. Obviously I never speak to either of them, I’ve just been stalking them on Instagram. I think I’m craving a bit of romance. Some kissing in front of an open fire, a long walk in the snow, a Frank Sinatra album. It’s this time of year; it makes total fools of us. I’d even be happy with a stroll in some sleet and a bit of Bublé. Alpha and I have a great arrangement, but it is entirely transactional, gand , y we’re refreshingly

transparent about that. I’m either at his flat, or texting him about what we’re going to do next time I’m at his flat. It’s a completely no-frills affair, the Argos of flings. Last week he called because I’d had a bad day at work, which was very thoughtful, but when he said goodbye after giving me some great advice, I realised I had spent more than 20 minutes not really saying much, as I had just assumed he was about to initiate phone sex. I think my friends think I’m trying to seduce them. I keep suggesting cocktails at the Savoy — to listen to the lounge singer tinkle White Christmas on the ivories.
