LEGEND

The Turn of 1900s – The Golden Age In 1246, Count Peter of Savoy built the Savoy Palace on land by the side of the river Thames. Though the palace was burned to the ground during the Peasant's Revolt of 1381, the name remains to the present day. In 1875, The London-born theatrical impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte built the Savoy Theatre named after the Savoy Palace site on which it was built, to stage his own productions of lyricist William Schwenk Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan's operas. Impressed by the new hotels in America at the time, Carte decided to build an epoch-making hotel in London. After five years of building, The Savoy hotel London opened on 6th August, 1889. The Savoy London was the first true luxury hotel in London, its full lightings by electricity, the first electric lifts, the speaking tubes and the luxurious private bathroom with separated cold and hot water marked the coming of a new era. The genius Richard D'Oyly Carte also made a smart and profound decision to recruit César Ritz, later known as the king of hoteliers, as the first hotel manager who helped the hotel to establish a huge reputation for excellence. A name must be mentioned was Auguste Escoffier, a brilliant French chef brought by César Ritz to Savoy kitchen who introduced the English to the subtlety and delicacy of French haute cuisine. The Savoy London was the platform of the city's history and prosperity during the turn of 1900s. In 1890, Society hostess Lady de Grey gathered a group of female contemporaries to dine at the hotel as a strike for equality, making it socially acceptable for women to gather for meals in public without their husbands. In 1899, Claude Monet took up residence at The Savoy for two months, painting his famous series of views of London and the River Thames. He returned in 1900 and 1901 to continue the work. In 1905, the American millionaire George A. Kessler hosted a "Gondola Party" where the central courtyard of Savoy was flooded to a depth of four feet, and scenery was erected around the walls. Costumed staff and guests re-created Venice.

THE

The Savoy – The Other Club –вплоть до смерти в 1965 году.

The Ultimate Churchill Experience Circulation: 30,000 To mark the release of the new film, Churchill, in cinemas 16 June, The Savoy has created the Ultimate Churchill Experience

Guests will be welcomed for a one-night stay in the Winston Churchill Personality River View Suite with the opportunity to enjoy a truly memorable Churchill-inspired stay. Winston Churchill, arguably Britain’s greatest Prime Minister and a regular visitor to the hotel throughout his entire life, had a special fondness for The Savoy, and in celebration of this relationship, a suite was named after him. While dining at The Savoy in 1939, Churchill famously got the call telling him he was to be the wartime Prime Minister. Having previously founded a private dining club at The Savoy, “The Other Club” in 1910, he attended its dinners in a private capacity as often as possible until his death – in fact his final public appearance was at such a dinner in 1964. During the Second World War he lunched at The Savoy so frequently with members of his cabinet, that a suite was permanently reserved for him to enjoy one of his famous power-naps. The Ultimate Churchill Experience includes a one-night stay with breakfast, Churchill welcome amenity, dinner at Simpson’s In The Strand, cocktails in the Beaufort Bar, a Churchill inspired Historical Tour, and two tickets to the Churchill War Rooms. Available for reservations from 01 August to 30 September, made by 30 August, priced from £1,995 per package, based on two people sharing, additional nights available on request.

The 8 Best Seafood Restaurants In London

From Porthilly oysters at Bonnie Gull to moules marinières at Randall & Aubin, we've got you sorted Kaspar's

The staff at Kaspar's Seafood Bar & Grill will give you one of the warmest receptions in London whether you are staying there or not, and the menu gains top marks from top to bottom (we particularly recommend the smoked fish selection). As for the oysters, a dozen for £28 is surprisingly good value given the luxurious settings. You get six from Jersey, which are light and delicious, and six from West Mersea, which have a more meaty texture. Dig in. The Savoy Hotel, Strand, London, WC2R 0EU, 020 7420 2111, kaspars.co.uk

Bar of the week: American bar at the Savoy

Don't even look at the menu. Because this is what you should order: The Blue Alpin. Yes, it's £50, and yes, that is ridiculous, but for twenty minutes of flawless drinking – a rarity, actually – it's worth it. Made up of Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky, Geisha coffee cordial, Cocchi Riserva, La Venaria Reale vermouth and Moorland mist, this drink – served short – is the Old Fashioned you never had. Ok, now, for your second cocktail, you can look at the menu. Specifically: the American bar's new Coast to Coast summer menu, which takes guest on a liquid journey through Great Britain from Kent up to Scotland, via London. Cocktails are inspired by each location and its people, and divided into sections, such as Castle Rock, which centres on sweeter notes of jasmine and honey, and Sherwood Forest, focussing on rich, amber spirits and infusions of pine and birch. For something a little lighter, consult the Garden of England and Art Deco sections. The Sapphire Jubilee from Art Deco, with Star of Bombay gin, Pineau de Charentes, violet liqueur and champagne, is an indulgent refresher. Time your tipple(s) for the live piano, which starts at 6pm, before heading to Kasper's Grill come eight. If you've got any cash left over, that is.

Monthly Unique Browsers: 27,255,682 There’s also, clearly, a recognition among New York’s taste-makers that, increasingly, London is the primary global food and drink capital that can rival theirs. After all, The Dead Rabbit may be at the top, but London has the highest number of bars in the World’s 50 Best Bars list, with five entries in the top 10: the American Bar at the Savoy is No 2, Dandelyan is No 3, the Connaught Bar is No 4, with The Gibson at No 6 and Happiness Forgets at No 10. It also has plenty of restaurants in the World’s 50 Best, among them The Clove Club, The Ledbury and Dinner. ‘London is the No 1 city in the world for restaurants,’ says Philip Hamilton, CEO of Aquavit London. ‘I just knew that Aquavit would be greatly received here.’

London's chicest cocktails

Monthly Unique Browsers: 27,255,682 Douglas Blyde has a front row seat for some well-tailored cocktails ‘Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance,’ opined Coco Chanel. Hers is a tenet transferable to chic cocktails, where a core spirit acts as the main article, adorned with complementary, or classily contrasting, accessories of vermouth, bitters and perfume-like essences… The Savoy’s Beaufort Bar renders explicit the relationship betwixt cocktails and couture. Guests are lit almost as under a spotlight, with views to the former cabaret stage that now curtains a tall bar. Ordered from an illustrated, limited run menu book evoking a grown-ups’ version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the ‘Height of Fashion’ cocktail takes inspiration from the hotel’s red lift. According to bartender Alex Walker, young porter Guccio Gucci once conveyed guests’ leather steamer trunks in this ‘ascending room’. Inspired by the hotel’s opulent surroundings, Gucci subsequently formed the eponymous fashion brand in 1920s Florence. Negroni-like, Walker’s libation collages cognac, Campari, Aperol and vermouth with a secret tincture evoking limousine leather. The result is smoothly powerful: an iron fist in a velvet glove, best sipped in glad rags while beholding the bar’s monthly burlesque show.

The best places to go for afternoon tea in London Afternoon tea at The Savoy is practically an institution and their beautiful glass domed Thames Foyer is the perfect setting for it. Their multi-course treat features savoury delights such as a selection of finger sandwiches ranging from the staple egg salad to mozzarella, tomato and pesto options. It wouldn’t be a proper afternoon tea without some tea and scones, which come with a hefty helping of clotted cream, lemon curd and preserve to slather on top. Curated by their Executive Pastry Chef Ludwig Hely, they have a special Spring Afternoon Tea promotion running till the end of June – think raspberry macarons, tiramisu eclairs and more.

On Monday July 3 the overheated among us should scuttle down to the Savoy’s Strand-based coffee shop, Melba, when they’re launching an ace-sounding treat: the icéclair.

It’s an ice cream/éclair hybrid, if that wasn’t already obvious. Light choux pastry – quite the trend (https://www.timeout.com/london/blog/pudding-bo߾ns-chin-chin-labs-are-opening-a-dessert-club-in-soho-041917) at the moment (https://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/londons-most-showstopping-desserts) – is 韛lled with ice cream (Sicilian pistachio, salted caramel, wild berry, that kind of thing), then slathered with sauce (choc, caramel, berry again) and given a milk or white chocolate glaze. Then it’s time for toppings, which include such sugary delights as popping candy, cookie dough and candy 躐oss. In short, they look banging – and they’ll doubtless taste just as good.

Icéclair leaving you cold? Check out our list of London’s most show-stopping desserts (https://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/londons-most-showstopping-desserts).

What: Royal Cocktails Why: This June will mark the Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee – that’s a whopping 65 years on the throne – and we will be celebrating in true regal style at The Savoy’s American Bar. Head Bartender Erik Lorincz has created five new cocktails for the occasion, each inspired by royal events like the birth of Prince George to the wedding of Charles and Diana. We like the sound of the Sapphire Jubilee Fizz the most; Star of Bombay gin, Oleo Sacharum, Violet Liqueur, Pineau de Charentes and Champagne. And yep, it’s blue. LONDON’S BEST MARTINIS Just Opened London’s ‘Best of’ series covers a combination of recently opened venues and established London favourites, to make sure you get the full lowdown on where to spend your time and hard-earned cash.

9. The Ultimate Martini Experience at The Savoy’s American Bar The beautiful and just-a-bit-glam American Bar at The Savoy has occupied a starring role in cocktail history since its opening in the late 19th century, with various supporting roles from the likes of punters such as Frank Sinatra and cocktail royalty cementing it as the longest surviving American Bar in London. Indeed, the Hanky Panky cocktail of Italian vermouth, dry gin and Fernet Branca all stirred together and garnished with orange rind was invented here by Ada ‘Coley’ Coleman – essentially a martini. Otherwise, we strongly suggest you go all out with their Ultimate Martini Experience where Grey Goose Vodka is stirred down with Savoy bespoke bitters and vermouth and served in fine crystal glasses. You’ll be able to choose from garnishes of citrus peel, caviar-stuffed olive or homemade pickled olive. Oh, and you’ll be needing the six Jersey rock oysters to wash it all down. A fair price at £60, no?

chin chin: national martini day on june 19th Well, who knew? SEEN is all for festivals related to James Bond’s favourite tipple. Indeed you could be forgiven for thinking that London is awash with gin at the moment, but then the capital has a fine history and tradition related to gin that goes back centuries. Thankfully, these days we have no need to drink gin because the water quality is so awful (though doubtless some would disagree) and there are several excellent establishments around town where you can quench your thirst on June 19th and remind yourselves that you are drinking history. Rather like JB in ‘Casino Royale’ SEEN doesn’t give a damn whether you have your martinis shaken OR stirred, just go and drink one from the American Bar at the Savoy. Harry Craddock, head bartender at The Savoy’s American Bar during the 1920s and 30s, is responsible for making the martini what it is today. Having been included in the ‘World’s Best 50 Bars’, this luxurious spot will be perfect for martinilovers looking for a sophisticated and classic tipple.

A new chapter for London's most historic restaurant... Simpson’s in the Strand first opened its doors in 1828 as a chess club and coffee house before becoming one of London’s most British of restaurants. This summer, Simpson’s is to re-open after a transformational restoration - under the instruction of Robert Angell Design International.

The kitchen is led by new head chef William Hemming who most recently was the Executive Sous Chef at Sky Garden. Expect a reimagined seasonal menu (using British produce) of British fare both traditional and contemporary. Alongside this, the restaurant’s renowned carving trolleys from 1848 will still serve the restaurant’s signature aged roast rib of beef tableside.

FOUR News | Tippling Club Racks up Three top 10 Nominations in the Tales of the Cocktail's Spirited Awards The award winning Sensorium Menu at Tippling Club in Singapore is turning heads this summer... Tippling Club has been nominated as top 10 finalists across three categories in the 2017 Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards – World’s Best Cocktail Menu; International Bartender of the Year; and Best International Restaurant Bar. The finalists for each category were selected from over a thousand incredibly qualified nominations, by committees consisting of the industry’s most respected professionals and led by Spirited Awards chairperson Charlotte Voisey. Making its debut on the World’s Best Cocktail Menu category is Tippling Club’s memorytriggering Sensorium Menu, an olfactory drinking experience that is delivered through 12 unique scents. It joins the ranks of reputed cocktail institutions from around the world, including London’s The Savoy and New York City’s The Dead Rabbit, among others. Launched in September 2016 by head bartender Joe Schofield and chefowner Ryan Clift, the aromaforward menu has since won the plaudits of industry experts and bartending authorities alike, paving the way for Schofield as he takes his place among this year’s International Bartender of the Year top 10 contenders. The Sensorium Menu started as a simple idea a year ago, and has since evolved into a fullfledged cocktail program that is truly oneofakind. Being recognized by Tales of the Cocktail is an incredible affirmation of the hard work and dedication that the team has tirelessly invested in championing our craft. I am honored to be able to lead them in flying the Tippling flag far and wide,” enthuses Schofield, who joined Tippling Club in early 2016. Adjoining Tippling Club’s awardwinning bar program is an equally lauded modern gastronomy restaurant—helmed by chefowner Ryan Clift—which has been putting forth innovative, ultraprogressive cuisine and cocktail pairings to the palates of local gastronomes since 2008. Tippling Club’s widereaching reputation as both a dining and drinking destination continues to precede itself; returning as a finalist in the Best International Restaurant Bar category for a third consecutive year. The three Spirited Awards® nominations are the latest addition to Tippling Club’s growing mantel of bartending accolades, alongside four recent top billings in The Bar Awards Singapore for Best Restaurant Bar, Most Creative Cocktail Bar, Best Cocktail Bar, and Bartender of the Year; and an upcoming placement in Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2017, to be announced in the later half of June 2017 is a monumental milestone for Tippling Club. The nominations are a timely testament to the great strides we have taken over the years, and will go a long way in inspiring the next chapter of Tippling Club,” attests Clift. Other Singaporebased Spirited Awards 2017 finalists include ATLAS (World’s Best Spirits Selection, Best New International Cocktail Bar); Manhattan Bar at The Regent (Best International Hotel Bar); Steve Schneider of Employees Only (International Bartender of the Year); and Zdenek Kastanek (Best Bar Mentor). The top four Spirited Awards nominees in each category will be announced via an exclusive Tales of the Cocktail Facebook Live broadcast on Saturday, 17 June, at 3:00AM SGT. Winners will be announced at the Spirited Awards ceremony in New Orleans on Saturday, 22 July, during the 15th Annual Tales of the Cocktail.

THE BEAUFORT BAR AT SAVOY

LET’’S START WITH A DRINK Words by Baldwin Ho

When it comes to cocktails, London has some of the most sumptuous and innovative offerings; it would not be outof-place to call London the cocktail capital of the world. For most, luxury has connotations of involving great expense, but here we examine not just the top hotel bars but also the hidden speakeasies where luxury also means using extremely rare ingredients––a guest list that exudes exclusivity. Beaufort Bar at the Savoy Top of the list for places to visit is the Art Deco, palatial Beaufort Bar at The Savoy, where plenty of genuine gold shimmers in the atmospheric surroundings. Cocktails don’t get more indulgent than their Age of Discovery: it has been matured in a hand-selected, three hundred-litre Jack Daniel’s barrel whilst stationed on

board the Queen Mary 2, during her forty-one thousand nautical mile world voyage. It was left on the open deck in thirty-nine ports of call in twenty-seven countries to pick up the variations in temperatures, humidity and sunlight to produce one of the most complex Jack Daniel’s cocktails you will ever taste. They have also launched an Illustrated Tunnel Book Menu that celebrates the greatest guests to have stayed at the iconic hotel. The Showgirl is a celebration of the time Marilyn Monroe took tea at the hotel and uses the very best components including Grey Goose vodka and Dom Pérignon champagne. The Impressionist is inspired by Claude Monet’s admiration of foggy London––a mysterious ‘fog’ seeps out of your cocktail. There is also the Harewood House Rum cocktail, which features vintage, eighteenthcentury Bajan rum from its original glass-blown bottles. It costs a mere £12,000 per serving.

8. The Beaufort Bar at The Savoy As you would expect from anything based at The Savoy, The Beaufort Bar is rather luxurious with £40,000 of real gold leaf used in the decor and an extensive champagne menu. The cocktail menu includes some of the rarest spirits in the world, including £250 1940s Cuban Bacardi and £750 prohibition bourbon. The canapes are as unique as the drinks, including Wagyu beef tartare with caviar and gold leaf topping, foie gras praline lollipops, and beetroot and goat’s cheese macaroons. 99 Strand, London WC2R 0EU Open 5pm – 1am Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday.

From chocolate washed Bourbon, to cocktail filled apples and recycled ingredients – don’t miss out on these 6 hot new cocktai menus.

The city’s oldest cocktail bar has launched a brand new menu featuring some old classics that were created back in the bar itself, years ago to mark some momentous royal occasions – like the Windsor Of Romance, created for the marriage of Charles & Diana (with Bombay Sapphire Gin, almond syrup, fresh lemon juice, Champagne). There’s also a new cocktail on there, Coast To Coast, which is created by the bar’s Head Bartender, Erik Lorenz to celebrate The Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee. It’s a real boozy blend of Star of Bombay gin, Oleo Saccharum, Violet Liqueur, Pineau de Charentes and Champagne. The Savoy Hotel, 100 Strand, London WC2R 0EZ, UK

5 of the Most Historic Hotel Bars Around the World

Monthly Unique Browsers: 3,685,963 If you’re looking for a posh stay in London, consider The Savoy, a five-pearl grand dame that opened in 1889 on the Strand. Its American Bar is one of the most iconic hotel bars in the world, not only for its guests (like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra), but for its famous bartenders, including Ada “Coley” Coleman and Harry Craddock, who compiled 750 recipes for the “Savoy Cocktail Book” in 1930. The bar’s name came from the fact that it was one of the earliest bars in Europe to serve American-style cocktails.

Fifteen years ago, Toru Machida was simply a young man with a high school degree and a heart full of London dreams. He had just moved to the British city from Tokyo after all. This young man landed a stint as a porter and worked his way up in the hospitality industry. Three years ago, Toru Machida became the Head Concierge of The Savoy. The discerning traveler would never turn down a chance to stay in elegant English Edwardian rooms, mere steps away from Covent Garden or dine at Gordon Ramsay’s famous grill, known to churn out great charcoal grilled Chateaubriand with pommes soufflés. The Savoy, London, lets you do both, from the northern bank of the River Thames. Head Concierge Toru Machida recently told Blouin Artinfo about his personal favorites in London and top recommendations for those seeking the best of the English capital city. Edited excerpts:

What are your recommendations for mustvisit places in London and why? As a concierge, I am constantly exploring London and its surroundings, learning about what this amazing city has to offer. I have to be up todate and knowledgeable about new openings and theater productions, especially as The Savoy is in the heart of Theatreland. A personal favorite is Sir John Soane’s Museum. It is just up the road in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. It’s an historic house, museum and library of the eccentric 19th century architect and collector Sir John Soane, and is filled with extraordinary pieces of arts and antiques collected from all over the world. What restaurants, bars, and cafes would you recommend in London and why? I may sound biased but our luxury restaurant Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill is perfect for couples, families and serves fresh, seasonal dishes that are guaranteed to entertain anyone’s appetite. In addition to Kaspar’s, I would recommend Umu, Ginza Onodera and ROKA; each of these restaurants reminds me of the true and authentic Japanese food served in my home country. Where would you go and what would you do if you had a free morning or afternoon in London? A guest once told me that there is no place in the world quite like London and he is absolutely right! I dedicate my free mornings or afternoons to exploring all the hidden gems that London has to offer. Some of my favorite spots to savor London include walking in and around Kensington Gardens or enjoying afternoon tea at The Orangery at Kensington Palace.

Where would you head to in London for the best shopping and what would you buy? The Savoy is ideally located for some of London’s finest shopping opportunities. Liberty, a very British store is located in a Tudorstyle building constructed from the timbers of two ships — HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan. Just off Regent Street, this store is a wonderland filled with innovative, iconic fabric prints, exotic flowers and luxury brands. With four floors, there are countless treasures waiting to be discovered! Where would you recommend people stay (hotels, B&Bs) when they visit London? The Savoy of course! Located in the heart of the city, The Savoy is just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of Theatreland or the cosmopolitan Covent Garden. We are very excited to welcome our sister property, Raffles Hotels & Resorts, which will be opening a hotel in the Grade II listed Old War Office in Whitehall. We look forward to having two exciting and iconic landmark destination hotels in London! What are the best places to see and buy art in London? If you are looking for a unique and special gift for someone, I would suggest paying a visit to London Glassblowing, the UK’s foremost contemporary glass art studio. You can watch the expert makers at work and see your beautiful, bespoke creations come to life. What are some of London’s best secret places that everyone should discover? In a small alley called Carting Lane, which runs between The Savoy and the Shell Mex building, is London’s last sewer lamp. A Victorian invention, the flame in the lamp burns 24 hours a day, lit by vapors from the sewers below. What are the best places to see live bands or musicians in London and why? In London, we are exceedingly fortunate to have so many iconic and historic music venues at our doorstep. A particular favorite location of mine is The Royal Albert Hall, the home of BBC Proms since 1941. This treasured venue is guaranteed to provide an unrivalled and magical music performance for our guests to remember. What are the best spots for experiencing London’s nightlife after spending the day at an art fair? London comes alive at night. The Box in Soho is the perfect spot to dance the night away while enjoying some mysterious theatrical performances and imaginative cabaret acts — it really is a visual delight for the senses! What projects are you currently working on/involved in? At The Savoy, we always have exciting initiatives in the pipeline. One project which we are currently working on is developing the ‘perfect’ and seamless arrival experience for guests. We are in the planning stage of transforming our front hall to meet the expectations of a modern luxury traveler. Click on the slideshow to take a look at London
