Bespoke decanters and boxes for Savoy Hotel You are in: News
Working in collaboration with The Savoy Hotel, London, Speciality Drinks has created and designed 15 bespoke decanters and boxes holding an extremely rare 48yearold single cask Macallan whisky to mark the 125th anniversary of the opening of The Savoy in 1889. Launched in April this year, the single malt was discovered by the whisky experts at Speciality Drinks, who came across an exceptional parcel of Macallan whisky in cask, aged for over 48 years in a sherry butt. Inspired by The Savoy’s acclaimed art deco architecture and interiors, Speciality Drinks designed the decanters and oversaw the creative direction of the craftsmanship from affiliated partners. Each decanter is hand blown and an individual work of art. The glass was produced by Brodie Nairn of Glasstorm Studio in Tain, Scotland, one of the most celebrated glass studios in the world. Each decanter has a handengraved collar created by Hamilton & Inches of Edinburgh, silversmiths and clock specialists to the Queen and Royal Warrant holders since 1955. Each collar was created from a single sheet of silver individually spun on a lathe. The box for each decanter was also designed by Speciality Drinks and produced by Neil Stevenson, specialist cabinetmaker and holder of a Royal Warrant since 2003, who has been creating cabinets and furniture for the Royal family since 1992. For cigars and sophistication, the famous American Bar – with its white ceiling, Terry O’Neill monochrome portraits and art deco decor – is where it’s at. The menu boasts a long list of tipples for the discerning drinker to choose from, but cocktails – including several classics created by Harry Craddock (head bartender back in the 1930s and the man behind Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book aka the bartender’s bible) – are undoubtedly the specialty. All of the cocktails have ‘a story’ and the encyclopaedia sized menu is beautifully presented, meaning there’s a tendency to sit and read all the entries like a child absorbed in a Harry Potter novel. Fortunately, for the indecisive, staff (ask for Alice) know their business and if you want advice on what to drink, you’ll get it with enthusiasm.

If you wish to hear the King's English spoken, quite possibly the last place you can now do so is in London, where, owing to the vast number of tourists and immigrants, it is more likely the person you pass on the street is speaking Russian, Gujarati, Hindi, Turkish, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese or Hebrew. The same is pretty much the case in New York (which draws more than 50 million tourists annually), but one still hopes to hear the kind of London accents that Prof. Henry Higgins could "place within two streets"--Hoxton, Lisson Grove, Hawkestone, Anwell, Selsey. London is--far more than Paris, Rome or Berlin--the epitome of the international city, as much a melting pot of cultures now as the United States. Perhaps, though, it is better to call London a stewpot, for you find that multinationalism has created a vast array of ethnic restaurants and eateries, starting with the old curry houses of the last century now including places with names like Pizarro, Wahaca, Bopshiu's, Umu, and Gymkhana, an Indian restaurant that just won top spot on Restaurant Magazine's National Restaurant Awards. Thus, on a recent trip to London, I ran the gamut between British and ethnic restaurants, beginning by checking into the magnificently restored (after a two-year closure) Savoy Hotel, set right on the banks of the Thames and in a cul de sac off the Strand.

Serving beautifully presented and reliably delicious Michelinstarred French cuisine from the 28th floor of the Hilton hotel on Park Lane, the rooftop restaurant Galvin at Windows is a personal favourite of mine. With so many gimmicky eateries coming and going in London, it’s strangely refreshing to go somewhere that’s been open for years and aims to impress its customers simply with excellent service and skilfully prepared food. It may seem a strange and perhaps misguided deviation, then, to see that the venue is this month serving a new Koreaninspired menu. But there’s good reason behind it. With the restaurant since 2006 and now its head chef, Joo Won is himself from Korea and has achieved a longheld aim by offering a sevencourse tasting menu that showcases how nuanced and sophisticated his nation’s cuisine can be. Available only for the month of August and costing from £110 or £169 with wine pairings, it fuses Korean condiments and techniques with English produce and the occasional French flourish. Dishes include tender marinated pork with pickled mooli and soy bean; braised short rib of Koreanstyle beef with a ribbon of kimchi and stuffed courgette; and tastierthanitsounds sweet red bean cream and black rice ice cream. I tried it on the opening night and, though clearly different from the norm, those high standards have been retained and the response was good. A BED AT THE SAVOY Savoir Beds has provided beds for the Savoy Hotel in London since 1905. The two have teamed up to offer visitors’ tours of the bedmaker’s workshop followed by afternoon tea in the Savoy’s glassdomed lounge, known as the Thames Foyer. Beds for the Savoy are made by hand using materials like horsetail hair, Mongolian cashmere and British lamb’s wool. The tour lasts about 90 minutes, during which visitors will meet the artisans and learn about their techniques. Visitors then proceed to the Savoy to enjoy the hotel’s traditional tea with scones, clotted cream, sandwiches and dessert.
