AccorHotels to buy owner of Savoy and Plaza PARIS REUTERS

AccorHotels is buying the owner of luxury hotels including London’s Savoy and New York’s Plaza, in a cash-andshare deal worth $2.9 billion that will raise the American profile of Europe’s largest hotel group. The deal, AccorHotels’ biggest, is the latest in a wave of acquisitions in a sector trying to fend off competition from online rivals like Airbnb and will involve two major Gulf investors taking stakes

in the French company. The group said it would pay for FRHI Holdings, parent of the Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel chains, with $840 million in cash and by issuing 46.7 million new shares. The share issue will leave the Qatar Investment Authority with a 10.5 percent stake in Accor, and Kingdom Holding, the investment company of the Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, with 5.8 percent. An AccorHotels shareholders’ meeting will be held in 2016 to approve the deal. The company said the deal would raise earnings starting in the second

year, with 65 million euros, or $71 million, in revenue and cost synergies expected. With the acquisition of FRHI and its portfolio of 155 hotels and resorts in 34 countries, AccorHotels will become one of the key global players in the luxury and upscale segment, with nearly 500 hotels, Sébastien Bazin, the AccorHotels chief executive, said. AccorHotels, which also competes with InterContinental Hotels Group and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, is undergoing a reorganization under Mr. Bazin who took the top post two years ago.

10.5% of Accor, and Saudi Prince al-Waleed bin Talal’s Kingdom Holdings will own 5.8%, according to Accor. The parent company, FRHI Holdings Ltd., owns the three luxury brands, which have about 115 hotels and resorts with 43,000 rooms. FRHI has an additional 40 hotels and 13,000 rooms under development. The company also manages famous luxury properties around the world, such as the Plaza Hotel in New York City and the Savoy in London.

A brush with greatness

CHARLIE CHAPLIN BY WENDY LEIGH

It was the summer of 1957 and I was six, happy to be playing my best friend’s favourite game with her; hiding behind the stone wall which surrounded her family’s estate in Vevey, Switzerland. We crouched there, Victoria and I, giggling, and when the first tourists of the day arrived to gawk at the mansion of Victoria’s father, the great Charlie Chaplin, we leapt out of our hiding place and flung mud and stones at them. The terrified tourists scuttled off while we roared with laughter. When we went up to the house again looking like little urchins, covered from head to foot in mud, Kay-Kay, the nanny, said, “Ooch, not again,” and put us straight into the ornate bathtub. When we emerged shiny and clean, she let us play with Victoria’s brand new doll, only lately dispatched from America and clad in a real mink coat and diamonds. That evening, my parents arrived to take me home from my weekend with the Chaplins and had drinks with them. “You know, when I’m in London, I always stay at the Savoy because they serve free peanuts with the drinks,” I heard Charlie explain to my father. Then Michael, Charlie’s eldest son by his wife Oona, burst into the

room to discuss the plans for his upcoming trip to America. Sternly, Charlie insisted that he take an economy flight which included a stop in Iceland, rather than travelling first class. Victoria and I had first met at

Great Fosters Hotel in Egham, Surrey, where Charlie and the family were staying while he made A King in New York that same spring. She introduced me to her father, a silverhaired old man ensconced in a red velvet wing chair, dressed in a green smoking jacket. He lifted me on to his lap, smoothed out the skirt of my blue party dress and said: “What a pretty dress. What do you want to be when you grow up?” “An actress,” I lisped. “Well, my child, become an actress, but never marry an actor,” he replied. In the hotel’s Elizabethan dining room, the band struck up the theme to Limelight, the Charlie Chaplin ﬁlm about an elderly clown who fell in love with a much younger dancer. Chaplin led his wife Oona, 36 years his junior, on to the dance ﬂoor. As they danced together, tears of emotion poured down his cheeks. ■
