Using Space Age techniques and exotic ingredients, mixologists have turned cocktailing into a modern form of alchemy. From the Chocolate & Blue Cheese Martini to the Basic Bitch, Richard Godwin raises his glass to the drink that conquered the capital
I
f I had to pinpoint the moment I realised London had gone insane — had reached #peakLondon, if you will — I’d choose one night in midsummer 2014. We were sitting in Duck & Waffle, the 24-hour restaurant at the top of 110 Bishopsgate, 40 storeys high. From that height, the streets below resemble a circuit board, pulsing with charge, while the express lift on
the outside of the building gives you a visceral sense of how swiftly fortunes rise (and fall) in financial London. Around the bar, clients brayed, Tinder dates Instagrammed, office affairs blossomed, hen parties shrieked. Meanwhile, the head bar-

The British, you’ll have noticed, have a pretty omnivorous approach to other nations’ drinking cultures. These days, Peruvian Pisco, Mexican Mezcal and Korean Soju pop up on cocktail menus regularly, while London bartenders have better access to niche spirits and liqueurs from mainland Europe (in America, it’s surprisingly hard to get hold of absinthe, for example). We have had the benefit of personnel, too. The swanky hotels are almost exclusively the domain of EU émigrés. At the Connaught Bar, Agostino Perrone and his largely Italian team have brought a Continental dash that has taken the Martini to heights of refinement. Then there is the huge influx of East Europeans: the American Bar’s Erik Lorincz (Slovak), Claridge’s Denis Broci (Albanian), the Artesian’s Alex Kratena (Czech). It’s often in bars that I’ve had the strongest sense of London as an international draw, eavesdropping as Lithuanian flirts with Brazilian, Estonian with East Ender. And then, as the lights go up amid the stench of sugar
If, upon walking into the Savoy hotel on its opening day in 1889, you felt a little out of place, you weren’t alone. London, after all, had never seen the like. Here on the Strand was a hotel that was American in size, and European in style. Rather fittingly for a hotel that is famous for witnessing some of the 20 century’s wildest celebrity antics, it was all based around the theatre. In 1881, the theatrically named impresario, Richard D’Oyly Carte, built the Savoy Theatre to capitalise on the public’s appetite for operas by Gilbert and Sullivan. D’Oyly Carte hoped that by adding an adjoining hotel, he would be able to lure highspending American opera buffs. After nearly five years, the hotel designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt was finished, boasting electricity and lifts. It had 400 bedrooms, but only 70 bathrooms. D’Oyly Carte had originally envisaged 437 bathrooms. Did he expect his guests to be amphibious? asked one wag. The shocking innovations didn’t end there. The new hotel even had a restaurant. It’s hard for us who are so used to eating out to appreciate the stir this caused. But even by 1889, polite society in Britain didn’t eat in public. It would take the irresistible aromas coming from celebrity chef August Escoffier’s Savoy kitchen to change that. Yet, despite everything the new hotel had going for it, the Savoy was far from a guaranteed success. Something was missing – or rather, someone. And D’Oyly Carte knew exactly who that someone was. Sunning himself on the French Riviera was the wunderkind of European hotels, César Ritz. Ritz was the fin de siècle’s turnaround king. Without his golden touch, The Grand Hotel National in Switzerland and the Frankfurterhof in Germany would have failed. Would Monsieur Ritz care to work his magic with the Savoy? No way, replied the Swiss. The British were too stuffy, they ate in private, and they were more or less beyond redemption. He could, however, be prepared to attend the hotel’s launch on 6 August 1889, when he opened his friend Escoffier’s restaurant. But D’Oyly Carte wouldn’t take no for answer, and presented the star hotelier with a blank cheque. Ritz eventually caved in, and agreed to lead the Savoy for many colourful years.

The Savoy can certainly boast to be one of London’s most lavish hotels, and therefore it’s no surprise that their spa prides itself on offering the same level of extravagance. Aptly named the Opulence at the Savoy package, this hero treatment from the Savoy targets all areas of the body, providing an ultimate level of pampering. Completely bespoke to the individual, the treatment selects essential oil blends which match the mood of the person receiving the treatment, lending an aromatherapeutic edge to the proceedings. Once selected, these oils are worked all over the body in a mixture of Eastern and Western techniques, relieving stress and specific areas of tension whilst leaving you feeling as if you have been lounging in the lap of luxury for hours. Besides, you can’t spoil yourself much more than indulging in a treatment especially tailored to you. The Opulence at The Savoy treatment is priced at £140 The Spa at the Savoy is only open to members and guests of the hotel, find out about becoming a member HERE

About Me
Taylor Swift Covers Vanity Fair Last month Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour came to London, whilst in the city she took time to shoot the September cover of Vanity Fair. Photographed by Mario Testino at the Beaufort Bar in the Savoy Hotel, Taylor Swift poses gracefully for what is probably one of my favourite Vanity Fair covers of recent times. In the editorial, Swift can be seen wearing several elegant outfits.

InterContinental Hotels could benefit from Fairmont deal, say analysts | Business | The Guardian
InterContinental Hotels could benefit from Fairmont deal, say analysts Company said to be close to buying Savoy Hotel owner for £1.9bn Nick Fletcher Tuesday 22 September 2015 12.20 BST
InterContinental Hotels is reportedly close to buying Fairmont Raffles, which owns luxury assets such as the Savoy in London, and Morgan Stanley analysts are positive on the idea. The bank said any such deal would be a good fit for InterContinental, since it is weak in the luxury segment, although Fairmont was likely to command a high price. With a possible $1.5bn buyback by InterContinental, a purchase of Fairmont for a reported £1.9bn would make it hard to boost earnings per share in a material way if the share repurchase went ahead. Morgan Stanley’s Jamie Rollo said: Press reports (Sunday Times) suggest that InterContinental is closing in on a deal to buy Fairmont Raffles for £1.9bn. Sources suggest InterContinental has beaten rivals including Wyndham and Accor, and is likely to seal the deal “within weeks”. Neither party has commented, but we note that InterContinental has not put out a statement denying the rumour, as it did after the Starwood takeover rumour (though the company said it was required by the authorities to put out a statement that time). Fairmont, which as well as the Savoy also owns the Plaza in New York, the Peace Hotel in Shanghai, and Raffles Singapore, is owned by Qatar-based Katara Hospitality and Saudi Arabia-based Kingdom Holdings. It would fit with InterContinental, given the company recently admitted a strategic gap in the luxury market. InterContinental also has funds available. It is about to receive $930m from the sale of its Hong Kong hotel and still has $363m from the sale of its Paris hotel. Morgan Stanley’s Rollo said: Having performed well both operationally and financially since its 2003 demerger, and with the Hong Kong and Paris hotel disposals completing its move to an asset light model, we think InterContinental management feel they are in a strong position to invest for growth. Unencumbered luxury hotel brands don’t come around that often, and the conundrum InterContinental likely faces is having to justify a multiple potentially double that on which its shares trade, and thus forfeit the more immediate and relatively safer upside from a large share buyback. With its shares on under 11 times 2016 estimated EBITDA and 17 times PE (post our current assumption of a $1.5bn buyback), we think they are good value for a high quality http://www.theguardian.com/business/marketforceslive/2015/sep/22/intercontinentalhotelscouldbenefitfromfairmontdealsayanalysts
