The Savoy holds a special place in my heart. Of course, it is THE iconic London hotel. Sometimes regarded as the first luxury hotel here it opened in 1889 and has become a real feature of London life and style. For me, though, it is simply that it was one of my regular haunts before it closed for a major renovation in 2007. I never had the chance to stay in the ‘old’ Savoy, but I did drink regularly in the American Bar and a special occasion would usually warrant a trip to the Savoy Grill for Dover Sole or Chateaubriand. As familiar as a pair of very expensive but now rather worn leather shoes, I was comfortable and at home.

After the renovation, I went back a couple of times. While I am sure the changes to the Grill make for a technically better restaurant, it had lost its charm for me. And, while the American Bar still had a piano player, everything else felt unfamiliar and slightly uncomfortable. It takes time, I believe, to ‘wear in’ a newly restored building – enough time to let the memory fade some of the things I loved about the old Savoy, like the charming bar staff in white uniforms which appeared to date back to the 1950s, the obligatory jacket and tie for gentlemen in the Grill and the fact that I was never allowed to order my own food at the restaurants there. An opportunity to take a proper look at the ‘new’ Savoy (which has been opened for six years now) was one not to be turned down. And, I was delighted by what I found. Checking into the hotel for the first time ever I went upstairs in the elegant, green lacquered lift to find myself in an art deco styled room which could have been part of the original building.

Floor to ceiling walk-in mirrored wardrobes, wooden panelling and an elegant marble bathroom complete with spacious tub and traditional chrome fittings. Later, we were taken to see a little more of the hotel – the stunning Savoy Suite, complete with one of the best views of London and with its own contemporary art exhibition and the two bedroom Royal Suite, which spreads across much of the river facing front of the fifth floor, so that every room has an extraordinary view.

Monet stayed at the Savoy and produced some of his famous Thames paintings from rooms on the fifth and sixth floor. The hotel even has its own pier, where guests can hire a luxury river yacht or cruiser. Downstairs we took a look at the stunning Beaufort Bar, and at the Thames Foyer, where guests were enjoying afternoon tea, before settling down in the American Bar for pink hot chocolate and cocktails. A gentle reminder of our raison d’etre to wait up and watch the hotel being decorated for Christmas.

Publication Date: December Circulation: n/a Of course, we dined like kings at Kaspars and I’ll write in more detail about that experience. Then, coffee in hand, we went to wait in the lobby.

Well after midnight the tree arrived, firmly tied onto the back of a large white lorry. The team of Christmas decorators processed in with packages, boxes, ladders and more. And, the tree itself was eventually loaded onto a trolley and wheeled into the lobby. There is something of a challenge in trimming a 15ft Christmas tree in just a few hours, before the hotel guests get up for breakfast. Even getting it upright takes a whole team of helpers. And, of course, of the twenty-nine Christmas decorators, only a few could actually trim the tree- there simply wouldn’t have been space for everyone to help. Instead, the Christmas team were deployed through the hotel under the watchful eye of Belinda Bowles, the Creative Floral Design Manager. The winter garden Gazebo was decked with baubles and white fir, side tables ladened with Christmas displays and display windows took on a distinctly snowy look.

Meanwhile, the team was at work decking the tree with ‘Boodles’ pink envelopes and mirrored deco squares and rectangles. A Boodles pink letterbox arrived – ready for guests to post their Christmas list, and two rather gorgeous copper greyhounds complete with pink ribbons around their necks took up residence under the tree. The Savoy is a dog friendly hotel and guests are welcome to bring small and medium sized dogs into the hotel.

The inspiration for this year’s decorations comes from Boodles, the hotel’s jeweller and from Louis Roederer, the hotel’s preferred champagne. There’s a Champagne festive afternoon tea with Boodles inspired pastries and a glass of Louise Roederer Vintage Rosé Cuvée. And if you are feeling lucky, there’s a chance to win a pendant from Boodles by filling in your Christmas wishlist, posting it to the Savoy Santa through the special postbox and then posting your own Instagram of the Christmas Tree with the hashtag #DreamingofaPinkChristmas I’ve filled in my own Christmas wishlist and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Although if I’m honest, I’m quite thrilled just to have had the opportunity to see Christmas get started at the Savoy.

THE SMART FASHIONISTAS A NIGHT AT THE SAVOY

Very few hotels compare to The Savoy (http://www.fairmont.com/savoy-london/), and even fewer have the same history and heritage.

We were offered the chance to stay one night in this iconic venue to witness the transformation of their hall, and the Thames Foyer into a Christmas fantasia. First, let me say a few words about the hotel. Everything here is well thought out, the attention to detail is astonishing. The hotel was refurbished between 2007 and 2010, transformed into a palace, without losing its soul. From the glistening crystal chandeliers to the gold leaf marble doors, the velvet furniture to the wooden panels on the walls, everything has been restored to the best quality reflecting the splendour of this establishment. While at the same time, the Savoy has kept its original identity, with vintage features such as the elevators left intact.

We checked-in a 6pm and received the warmest of welcomes. Our room was fantastic, traditional yet extremely cosy and comfortable. A few presents were waiting for us, including a formidable ginger bread house and a Boodles (http://www.boodles.com) goody bag. After a quick change, we headed to the Kaspars Seafood Bar & Grill (review to follow). We wandered around after dinner, admiring the premises and the people. It was delightful. Happiness was the best word to describe our next morning: from the delicious breakfast to the discovery of the festive fantasia. It was such an honour to be one of the lucky few to live this experience. It was a night to remember.

As most of the Savoy guests were retiring to bed, we were sitting excitedly in the lobby waiting //www.thoroughlymodernmilly.com/ for the huge tree to arrive. Dressed in pink with a Boodles post office (for Christmas correspondence!) the beautiful tree lights up the entrance to the Savoy. The next morning it was wonderful to watch the expressions on peoples’ faces as they realised the tree had magically appeared overnight.

4 Festive Fairytales for a London Christmas Just Opened London

Back in the day, amongst the prodding of presents and guessing of gifts, once the school bell sounded, it was time for Christmas movie cramming. Just as well because there’s a few life lessons to be learnt from green Grinches and carolling Muppets. But most of all, as anyone who’s watched Home Alone 2 on loop will tell you, hotels are a pretty top place to be at Christmas. Which is where The Savoy’s frozen fantasia comes in rather handy. If Christmas inspires your yesteryear yearning for sugar plum trinkets and even sweeter sugared mice then The Savoy’s the place to be. Decking the halls with a 15ft high Nordmanniana tree, the hotel’s literally reaching for the skies and fuelling our festive fantasy. In collaboration with resident jeweller Boodles, they’ve concocted a pearlescent pink Christmas tree with glistening cut glass decorations and mirrored art deco diamonds. Like a fanciful fondant, the icing on the cake is the installation of an indoor ice rink. If like us, you secretly have Never-land now’s your chance CHRISTMAS to jump inside toy-world.

Luxury Hotels

Oh to be in the luxury Savoy Publication Date: December Circulation: n/a hotel now, or ANY time December 16, 2016 Oh to be back in London, and to look out over the Thames, especially at sunrise – see the image above. At Christmas time, the city’s luxury hotels are very special indeed. The gal was bowled over by the inside-out tree concept, by Apple’s Jony Ive and Marc Newson, at Claridge’s, and by Antony Gormley’s outsize knitting needle outside The Connaught. At the iconic The Savoy, the lobby tree is more traditional, but walk down towards Kaspar’s fabulous Seafood Bar and Grill and you do think you are in a white winter-wonderland.

Sarah Miller, left, and Phil Barnes, The American Bar

Kaspar’s, by the way, is called after a three-foot-tall feline sculpture by Basil Ionides, made to ward off bad luck after a South African diamond magnate, Woolf Joel, held a dinner for 13 in the hotel, way back in 1898: now, any table-for-13 is set for 14, with the cat posed in one chair. We were two for dinner, but first it was drinks in The American Bar – gosh, we were lucky to get a table (memo to travel advisors, make sure your clients have a reservation there, to avoid having to stand in line for half an hour or so. And after an aperitif, and dinner, I returned up to my little room, which actually was rather special, The Savoy Suite, number 618.

Decorations spell out SAVOY

Looking through to The Savoy Suite’s bedroom…

What does actually make a luxury hotel experience? Staff who appear when you want them to, and do not hang around. I was initially taken up by the lovely Kelly-Marie Rimmer, director of guest services. She talked, without asking nosy questions, but she gave me plenty of opportunity to say anything I wanted, anything I needed. As we turned the corner from the elevator, to walk along the pale pistachio corridor to 618, the butler was already standing

outside. He quickly, once inside the room with Kelly-Marie and me, realised I did not need anything, and until I had a print-out delivery I never saw him again.

.. and its Marilyn-style bathroom

Then the room has to be perfect, and more and more an incredibly glamorous bathroom, one that evokes Hollywood in bygone days, adds to the image of any luxury hotel (you want to feel Marilyn-like, in bias-cut pale pink crèpe de chîne, a glass of Bollinger, perfectly chilled, in one hand, but forget the cigarette in a horn cigarette holder that might have been diagonally slipping from the other hand). See the video below. A stunning view helps. And for me, at least, anyone that can offer a 24/7 gym, with Technogym that allows you to play sudoku, and breakfast, as in Kaspar’s, with outstanding coffee poured by a charming young man from Caracas… oh there is so much more in the complicated recipe for the perfect luxury hotel. Just see what is already happening here at The Savoy, and watch what newlyarrived GM Philip Barnes has up his sleeve. SEE MORE OF THE SAVOY SUITE, BELOW

You’ll need deep pockets for a grand hotel tea A FROZEN Fantasia is how the Savoy hotel bills its festive tea, and that’s how it is. You enter through snow, the foyer is a white-and-silver blur, a sparkling mannequin revolves in the centre, a pianist plays in the corner. And the tea! The best turkey sandwiches. Scones with lemon curd and cranberries! Four kinds of fancy cake! Ad lib! The children I took were saucer-eyed. Then there’s fabulous Christmas tea at Claridge’s: smoked salmon sandwiches with a pine-infused cream; cranberries in the miniEccles cakes, gold leaf on the

macarons. Traditional or what! Well, sort of. The price at the Savoy for tea is £68. Per person. Claridge’s is also top of the range. I was not, thank God, paying. Time was, afternoon tea was a cheap way into the grand hotels of London. No longer. But, as my son said, you can eat all you like.

t's a tale of two bars at The Savoy. First-timers tend to make a beeline for The American Bar: all white-jacketed waiters and oldfashioned, all-English polish. Then there's the Beaufort Bar, tucked away in the back: its darker, sexier, more glamorous sibling.

The site of the hotel's former cabaret stage and auditorium, the bar retains a theatrical feel, with its palatial black-and-gold colour scheme and oriental-influenced, art deco flourishes. All that gold (a rumoured £40,000's worth) and candlelight does wonders for the complexion so it's an ideal date venue, especially if you secure a spot in one of the gilded alcoves (all the better for people-watching if conversation falters).

Beaufort Bar at The Savoy

In any case, conversation matters less than the size of their wallet: cocktails in surroundings this opulent don't come cheap. The list is divided into light aperitifs, complex aromatics and indulgent after-dinner drinks (ranging from £16 to £50), and runs to a choice of vintage and rare cocktails, which includes a Cuban Bacardi from the 1940s for £250 and a serve of 236-year-old Harewood House rum, the oldest rum in existence, for £12,000. 1/3/2017

Well, you wouldn't expect sliders and fries in the spot where Coco Chanel once sipped her favourite champagne, would you?

Chanel herself features as one of the four "character drinks" on the menu: the Coco comprises red wine, Grey Goose, Lillet Blanc and Moet & Chandon and is served with a jasmine and rose-scented spray and a caviar tin of black sugar pearls, a nod to the designer's assertion that red wine and caviar would keep her young. She surely would have approved of the bar's current incarnation: an elegant and glamorous spot for whispering sweet nothings while a pianist serenades you with a soundtrack of Eva Cassidy and Bonnie Raitt. The only thing to jolt you out of the decadent daze is the bill; so make sure you take someone as lavish as the surroundings.

The Savoy’s Simpson’s-in-the-Strand has drawn from England’s greatest novelist, Charles Dickens, for their Christmas cocktail. The Christmas Carol’s Belle drowns her sorrows this season with her eponymous Belle’s Burnt Butter Alexandra. This combo of Old Raj Gin, Beurre Noisette Washed Geniver, White Chocolate Liquor, Vanilla Sugar, Cream & Nutmeg has us all wishing our neighbors good cheer. IT’S BRILLIANTLY BRITISH AT SIMPSON’S-IN-THESTRAND 5 Dec 2016 Categories: Restaurants Tags: Beef, British, London, Sunday Roast We’re living in a time when to be proud of one’s country can be a dangerous political statement. This is a sad state of affairs, as Britain has so much to be proud of, especially in its thriving culinary scene. National pride has been hijacked by the UKIP brigade and twisted so unrecognisable that to profess a love for fish ‘n’ chips will see you up strung up by social justice warriors faster than you can say ‘lack of context’. So when we take our seats in the quintessentially English Simpson’sintheStrand, an institution that has served British cuisine for over 185 years, this ‘regressive left’ media narrative that’s entered my brain via my smartphone has me halfexpecting to see Nigel Farage balancing a pint on his head at the opposite table. (Happy spoiler alert: I don’t.) I’m dining with my father who is in town for a few nights and has returned to his old stomping ground of the Strand. When he enquires about the famous Simpson’s olives that he used to use to soak up his lunchtime glasses of wine – he claims that he had a position at Shell but the only stories I hear from his friends are of long, boozy lunches in establishments such as this one...this work ethic must be genetic – the waiter surprises him with a bowl of them as an amuse bouche. A nice personal touch, and completely in fitting with the bespoke service that we enjoy throughout the night, one waiter even printing off a history of Simpson’s after I ask a few questions about the illustrious building’s past.

Tempting as it is to copy the majority of the restaurant’s description from the printout and pop off for a glass of Pinot in my local – like I said, hereditary work ethic – I’ll only drop in that Simpson’s opened as the Grand Cigar Divan in 1828, which hosted some of history’s greatest chess players, hence the emblem on the menu. The booth that we sit in is actually the original booth in which Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky played the famous ‘Immortal Game’ on 21 June 1851. But we didn’t come to play. We came to eat. The olives make a guest appearance in the bread that we spread liberally with soft butter, clinking glasses of Theophile Champagne to toast...well, it’s Wednesday, so that’s a good a reason as any. A pianist tinkles away in the corner, arpeggios from familiar classical music segueing into Happy Birthday as the waiters surprise a celebrating guest with a cake and a chorus. Chandeliers illuminate the olde worlde opulence of the décor and our neighbours’ conversations evaporate pleasantly towards the tall ceilings.

RSS FEED The lobster soup does justice to a classic starter, a generous pinch of pepper offering a subtle piquancy to the dark brown liquid that engulfs a small mound of the crustacean's flesh. The roast wood pigeon breast is equally impressive, thin strips of crispy bacon lending a saltine tang to the thick, sweet jus that soaks into the earthy tenderness of the bird and its accompanying new potatoes. The manager recommends a bottle of the South Australian Cranswick Estate Shiraz, which proves to be soft and velvety yet has enough legs to stand up to our meatheavy main courses. We can’t come to Simpson’s and not have the carvery, two huge trolleys that are wheeled around the restaurant and displayed to patrons who can choose which area of the joint that they want and to what degree they like it cooked. We go for one of the beef and one of the lamb and our table is soon festooned with plates with thick trimmings of meat, side plates of potatoes, miniature saucepans of Savoy cabbage and two of the tallest Yorkshire puddings that I’ve seen since my student days in Sheffield. The meat is excellent, cooked to a tee and covered in the type of treacleblack gravy you (or maybe just me) could drink from a glass. Possibly the most British way to stave off the November evening chill and one that I’ll be repeating often throughout winter.

Situated in London's most famous hotel, The Beaufort Bar is quite possibly the most glamorous destination to sip a cocktail in the city. The dĂŠcor alone is surely worth the price of a few drinks: jet-black walls, splashes of gold, individual candles and soft lighting make this sleek space the perfect spot for a bit of romance with a loved one, or drinks with friends. The Beaufort, however, is not just about the venue as the drinks list shines with creativity and versatility, offering an extensive selection of champagne, cocktails and wines by the glass. London’s luxury hotels get festive Business Traveller – The leading magazine for frequent flyers

This year has seen some of London’s luxury hotels form partnerships with artists, designers and luxury brands for their festive displays. Their dining venues have also put together special menus to mark the season. Here’s what a selection of properties are offering. Claridge’s The Mayfair hotel has paired with Apple’s chief design of󜇡󜇡cer, Sir Jony Ive, and designer Marc Newson to present an immersive winter experience for guests. As well as offering Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve menus in its Michelin-starred restaurant, Fera, Claridge’s has created a festive afternoon tea that includes a glass of Laurent-Perrier champagne, turkey, cranberry, chestnut and pork stuf󜇡󜇡ng sandwiches, and a serving of Claridge’s Christmas pudding (£85 per person). claridges.co.uk
