 Spirited Awards Dominated By London By Simon / 1 day ago / News / No Comments

Last night the Tales of The Cocktail Spirited Awards took place. London won. Yep it is time for the annual ‘London Cleaned Up’ post from the Spirited Awards. Each year London do pretty well at our industries biggest awards ceremony, this year was almost embarrassing.

The awards are divided up into American and Rest of the World categories. This year the only winning bars from outside of the states were from London. A massive achievement.

The lovely Hidetsugu Ueno, from Tokyo, stopped it being a complete whitewash but apart from that we nailed it. The Connaught were this years biggest winners with International Cocktail Bar and World’s Best Cocktail Bar.

Sometimes Happiness doesn’t Forget

On top of that American Bar, Callooh Callay, Hawksmoor Spital䀫ကelds, Happiness Forgets, Oriole and Dandelyan all got up on stage to pretend they weren’t as drunk as they were, and try to remember to thank their mums.

Our friends at the Cocktail Lovers also claimed an award as did Max Warner and Angus Winchester (he may live in London but his love of cricket means he will always be a Brit in our eyes).

It was a massive night for all of those winners but take a moment to remember the other three in each category who didn’t get their moment of glory (a feeling BarLifeUK know only too well). It is a huge achievement to be in the top four and they should all be very happy for what they have achieved.

Anyway I’m pretty hungover and bored of typing now. Well done everyone. Full list of winners below:

LATEST NEWS In the early hours of Sunday morning in New Orleans, Tales of the Cocktail announced their 10th Annual Spirited Awards winners for 2016. We are delighted to announce that The Savoy’s American Bar won Best International Bar Team. Following the most diverse nomination pool in the history of the show and a rigorous judging process by some of the most respected minds in the cocktail industry, this is a fantastic achievement for The Savoy, the American Bar and Head Bartender Erik Lorincz and his hardworking and highly creative team. This is not the first time that the American Bar has achieved great success at Tales of the Cocktail; in 2011 the American Bar was named the World’s Best Hotel Bar and Erik Lorincz as International Bartender of the Year. been nominated every single year for various categories, so it is a great honour that they have once again been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the international bar scene.

Inspired by the iconic sights of London, The American Bar launched their newest and most ambitious menu in Inspired by the iconic sights of London, The American Bar launched their newest and January 2016 to great accolade. The American Bar may be the longest-surviving cocktail bar in England, and one of http://www.hospitalityandcateringnews.com/2016/07/americanbarsavoywinsbestinternationalbarteamtalescocktail/ the most iconic in the world, but its continuous success and reinvention shows that the bar is still very much at the forefront of the beverage industry. Since 2007, the Spirited Awards have recognised the very best bars, bartenders, writers and experts, becoming the industry’s most prestigious and coveted awards. Finalists and winners were voted on by a panel of more than 100 industry experts. Voting was a week long process that required extensive knowledge in each category. The votes were checked by the Super Committee and tallied to determine the finalists and ultimately the winners. Commenting on the win, bar manager Declan McGurk said; ‘We are immensely proud to be recognised by our industry in such a manner. Our bar is steeped in history and to receive this award will add yet another story to the American Bar legacy’.

The Connaught Bar, run by Italian mixologist Ago Perrone at The Connaught hotel in London, has been named the world’s best bar.

It’s a kind of magic – The Connaught has been voted the world’s best bar

The plush hotel bar scooped the top spot at the 10th annual Spirited Awards at the Tales of the Cocktail festival in New Orleans. Four of the eight nominees in the ‘World’s Best Cocktail Bar’ category, including Callooh Callay, Happiness Forgets and Hawksmoor Spitalfields hailed from London. Ryan Chetiyawardana’s Dandelyan at the Mondrian hotel picked up the best cocktail menu award, while Oriole in Clerkenwell, the Nightjar’s little sister, was voted the best new international cocktail bar. Erik Lorincz and his crew at the American Bar at The Savoy scooped the best international bar team award, while Hawksmoor Spitalfields was named best international restaurant bar.

The Connaught Bar, London. — AFP pic LONDON, July 26 — Posh London watering hole The Connaught Bar has been named the best cocktail bar in the world by experts at an industry event which recognises the best mixologists, cocktail menus and bars of the last year. At the 10th edition of Tales of the Cocktail which wrapped up in New Orleans over the weekend, The Connaught Bar was bestowed with the most coveted award of the night and pronounced the world’s best bar of 2016. The winner is determined by tallying the number of total votes cast for both American and international finalists across five of the main categories, such as best cocktail bar, cocktail menu and hotel bar. Votes are cast by a panel of 100 industry experts.

Located within the luxurious Connaught Hotel in one of London’s most exclusive and fashionable neighbourhoods, Mayfair, the bar was designed by David Collins, whose credits include restaurant interiors for Marco Pierre White, Marcus Wareing, The Wolseley and Gordon Ramsay. He has also designed retail interiors for Jimmy Choo and Harrods, as well as Madonna’s New York and London apartments. Cocktails like the Mulata Daisy, made with eightyearold rum, creme de cacao and fennel seeds, and the Sakura, made with Pear Williams EDV, cherry blossom liquour and plum wine, are created by whitegloved bartenders in suit and ties or crisp white shirts and black vests. The bar’s wellheeled guests sink back into plush leather chairs sipping on their £17 (RM91.14) cocktails, taking in the glamorous atmosphere of the 1920sera decor, courtesy of silver leaf walls overlaid with pink, pistachio and lilac. The Connaught also took the award for best international hotel bar.

Other big winners of the night include tiki bar Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco, which took home the award for best American cocktail bar, and Happiness Forgets, which has been described as the British equivalent of Cheers, for best international cocktail bar. 7/27/2016 The Connaught Bar in London named world’s best bar 2016 | Eat/Drink | Malay Mail Online Best International Bar Team: Here are some of the other winners: American Bar at the Savoy (London) Best American Restaurant Bar: Best International Restaurant Bar: Saxon + Parole (New York) Hawksmoor Spitalfields (London) American Bartender of the Year: International Bartender of the Year: Jeffrey Morgenthaler of Clyde Common (Portland) Hidetsugu Ueno of Bar High Five (Tokyo) Best American Cocktail Bar: Best International Cocktail Bar: Smuggler’s Cove (San Francisco) Happiness Forgets (London) Best American Hotel Bar: Best International Hotel Bar: The Elephant Bar at The NoMad (New York) The Connaught Bar at The Connaught (London). — AFPRelaxnews Best New American Cocktail Bar: Sweet Liberty (Miami Beach)

I’m not one to pursue the familiar when I travel. What would be the point of that? But an evening at the The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel’s American Bar turned out to be surprisingly closer to home than I imagined while scratching the itch for an only-in-London experience. The name itself obviously promises less than a rigorously authentic, pure British venue, with its focus on American mixed drinks. That’s all fine and good, given the bar’s century-plus-long claim to fine beverage lore. The American Bar also flouts its Boldface Name Drank Here past. So, the landmark’s entrance corridor and Deco-style bar walls are lined with the Savoy’s own collection of Hollywood headshots, collectibles and ephemera. I was raised and live in Los Angeles, so vintage Hollywood Golden Age memorabilia abroad doesn’t hold much interest. The

American Bar, however, means drinking smart, perfectly crafted cocktails from a hyper-local London-themed menu. A fine merging of cross-Pond sensibilities involving top shelf spirits, indeed.

The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel’s American Bar

The London Menu, which was introduced earlier this year, is organized thematically in honor of the six boroughs located around The Savoy. Head bartender Erik Lorincz and American Bar manager Declan McGurk collaborated on shaping the six chapters, with four specialty cocktails, each with a unique backstory. It’s an ideal combo of classic American drinking culture, Tinsel tow-style storytelling and local history. The Green Park from the Westminster section with Old Tom gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, celery bitters, egg white and basil served in an elegant long-stemmed coupe is bright and fresh and downright dynamite, whether or not you read the menu text recounting the history of that particular London location. This cocktail could be right at home in any market-driven cocktail menu in SoCal, too. The description of the City of London’s page Pharmacist comes with a succinct lesson about Stoughton’s bitters, one of the UK’s first patented medicines formulated across from London’s famed Borough Market. The drink itself blends Bulleit rye, Barolo Chinato digestif, Suze apéritif, absinthe, house-made grenadine and dehydrated raspberries. And the extra dash of context is the perfect secret ingredient. The interior designer Robert Angell has this year risen to the challenge of transforming spaces at two of London’s classic hotels: the American Bar at the Savoy, and the Blue Bar, Collins Room and Lobby at the Berkeley. The refurbishment of the Savoy’s famous bar, which dates back to the 1930s, required a careful blend of respect for its heritage with a willingness to refine elements of the interior for the 21st century. Angell explained: “We wanted to reflect the Savoy’s Art Deco style and celebrate its spirit of glamour, while creating a more cohesive design.” He added subtle silver leaf layers to the ceiling, covered the walls with waxed linen to bounce light around the bar, and brought in handcrafted, curvaceous furniture with luxurious piping on the leather upholstery.

The Museum Bar at the Savoy

Striking a balance between the past and future also lay at the heart of Angell’s more recent project: the transformation of the Blue Bar, the Caramel Room (now known as the Collins Room) and the Lobby at the Berkeley. Angell, who unveiled the finished spaces earlier this month, took the baton from David Collins, with his brief being to uphold the late, great interior designer’s legacy by reinventing the signature aesthetic of each interior.

Quintessential Summer Cocktail Recipes From The Savoy Hotel

We can’t get enough of Mojitos and Manhattans these days, so we caught up with Erik Lorincz, head barman at the Savoy’s legendary American Bar to teach us a thing or two about the art of mixology and simple tips for making the most of summer cocktails

www.earchitect.co.uk Cocktail bars are cropping up all over the place these days but for the ultimate mixology experience oozing with glamour, you won’t do better than the ‘American Bar’ in London’s swanky hotel, The Savoy. As one of the most iconic cocktail bars in the world dating back to the early 1900s, its first truly ‘famous’ bartender was a lady named Ada ‘Coley’ Coleman whose signature cocktail, the Hanky Panky, is still a popular choice today. Fast forward to the 21st century, and Erik Lorincz is the eleventh head bartender at the American Bar, following The Savoy’s restoration. We caught up with awardwinning mixology guru, Lorincz, who tells us why citrus is spoton for summer drinks: “One ingredient that I prefer to use and is a perfect twist to a summer cocktail is citrus. First and foremost, the juice produced, provides an added freshness to drinks, ensuring a perfect and harmonious balance of flavour. Citrus is very easy to mix and works well with all spirits, herbs and other fruits. In addition to fruit juice, citrus skin also carries an exceptional amount of aromatic oils. I therefore love to use the skin, just to squeeze over the drink, extracting the aromatic citrus oils and transferring them on the surface of the drink. When lifting the glass close to your nose, the aroma of citrus notes instantly enhances and reinvigorates your senses. After squeezing the citrus, I often peel the fruit and use the skin for cordials, the variation of energising citrus flavours works perfectly to create an innovative tone to any drink. Another method to try is to dehydrate the skin, gradually blending it to powder. Like the juice, citrus powder also contains sensational aromatic oils that can be used as a foundation flavour in any drink. The use of fresh, zesty flavours is ideal to awaken one’s senses and revitalise yourself on a hot summer’s day.

The Kaspar’s story begins in 1898, when South African diamond magnate Woolf Joel suddenly died. Just before his death, Joel hosted a dinner at The Savoy for fourteen guests. At the last minute one of them cancelled. Joel decided the dinner should go ahead, but a more superstitious guest declared death would befall the first person to leave the table. Woolf Joel defiantly decided to take the gamble himself. Weeks later he was shot dead in Johannesburg. Anxious to avoid a repeat of such ill fate, The Savoy decided to provide an extra guest for every table of thirteen. Initially the hotel had a member of staff sit amongst the diners, but this proved unpopular. Guests felt unable to discuss their private matters freely. Thus, in a stroke of genius, Kaspar was created – sculpted into life by architect Basil Ionides in 1926. Kaspar is delighted, to this day, to join tables of thirteen – napkin round his neck, a full placesetting before him, ready to enjoy every course he is served.

INDULGE ME Luxury hotels are engaged in a race to the top to treat their wealthy customers to ever more extravagant perks, from designer wardrobes to private jets. Words: Scarlett Winterberg

B

ack in the late 1800s, the Savoy famously became the first hotel in London to run on electricity, a sign of true luxury at the time. It also had lifts, “speaking tubes” so that guests could call for a maid and, later, en suite bathrooms with showers. Over the decades, it has continuously evolved to find new ways to ensure its guests feel pampered – Marlene Dietrich was always welcomed with 12 pink roses and a bottle of Dom Perignon. With a global increase in standards of living, demand for luxury hotels has rocketed, and competition has become fierce. From athlete-quality gyms and Michelinstar restaurants, to helicopter transfers and room service for your dog, there’s no end to the ways the world’s most expensive hotels are vying to win new clients. According to a study by Transparency Market Research, the value of the luxury hotel market will increase to $195bn by 2021 (up from $148bn in 2014). But what does “luxury” mean for travellers in the 21st century? According to Uwern Jong, editor-in-chief of luxury travel journal OutThere/Travel: “Luxury today is about elevating what is already great service to a level where it becomes unforgettable. “Modern five-star travellers are looking not just to stay, but to engage personally and emotionally with a property. And the world’s best hotels are responding – we’re seeing more and more top-tier hotels with “chief experience officers” or “brand experience directors” to effect everything from the check-in process to shareable nuggets of social currency.” James Wallman, author of Stuffocation and founder of trend-forecasting agency The Future is Here agrees: “Luxury is changing more quickly this 21st century than ever. Travel and luxury have plenty in common. They’re a status marker – a way of indicating your prowess and power in the social hierarchy.” Wallman says we’ve entered the age of “experientialism”. “People want to stand out not through what

Politics, party and pillow talk. Edited by

Guy Pewsey

Tory rivals lack the steel to be a new Iron Lady YESTERDAY, in an unguarded moment in a Sky News studio, where he was discussing the Tory leadership candidates with Sir Malcolm Rifkind, Kenneth Clarke said: “Theresa is a bloody difficult woman — but you and I worked with Margaret Thatcher.” So would the lady be turning in her grave at the comparison? Damian Barr, author of acclaimed memoir Maggie & Me, thinks May and her competitor Andrea Leadsom have a long way to go before stepping into Thatcher’s sensible shoes. “It is lazy sexism, and lazier journalism, to compare May and Leadsom to Thatcher just because all three happen to have vaginas,” he told The Londoner yesterday. “Thatcher had majesty and madness in equal measure: May and Leadsom lack both.” May has long been compared to our first, and only, female PM, and it’s a bandwagon that Leadsom has been keen to jump on — she styled herself as the “new Thatcher” in a Telegraph interview at the weekend. But neither can compete with Maggie’s vision, says Barr. “Thatcher was a true blue revolutionary — May and Leadsom are mere functionaries, senior managers at best. They won’t redefine the political landscape, they go orienteering then get lost and argue over the map.” All that is left, he thinks, is a “disappointed headmistress act. May is acting head, Leadsom acting deputy.”

It’s no wonder that Barr feels so strongly on Thatcher. Maggie & Me is the story of his tough childhood in a Lanarkshire village, inspired by the battle of his “other mother” in Parliament. The author also runs a literary salon at the Savoy hotel, with Dame Joan Bakewell and Caitlin Moran among the attendees. Neither May or Leadsom are expected anytime soon.
