I

we all  have at least one spot in a favourite bar to use for drinks with a share  favourite  think

contact or a cosy martini with friends. My two places are the bar at the Connaught (for glamour) and the one at Durrants Hotel (for a quiet, old-school bolthole). But what about a favourite spot for the actual drinks? If you are partial to a very good cognac, or an aged rum served sipping-style, do you know where to go for that?

Imbibe magazine has just released the shortlists for its inaugural best drinks lists awards. I wasn’t surprised to find the Connaught, as well as the Beaufort Bar at the Savoy, coming up as contenders in the Classic List of the Year category though it was good to know that if I’m in Oxford I can check out Raoul’s, or if in Manchester look into Mojo.

Even more useful are the places to check out if you are really into gin (and that’s everyone, right?), cognac, rum or whisky. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/luxury/drinkinganddining/imbibereleasesitsinauguralbestdrinkslistsawards/

Aw, shucks! Where to eat the best oysters in London

Seafood platter at Kaspar's Seafood Bar & Grill

Kaspar’s Seafood Bar & Grill If you’re in the mood for oysters and bubbly, where else would you go but The Savoy’s elegant art deco-inspired seafood restaurant? “Native oysters are fresh and delicious to eat, especially when accompanied by a crisp glass of champagne,” says The Savoy’s executive chef Holger Jackish, who likes to close his eyes when he is chewing an oyster, all the better to appreciate the complex mineral flavours that linger on the palate. Jackish doesn’t have a favour native oyster, so long as it’s British. “I would always choose a British oyster over any other. They are perfect in taste and consistency.” Look out for Kaspar himself: a cat sculpture commissioned in 1926 to join unlucky tables of 13 diners. The Savoy, Strand, London, WC2

National pride: 5 brilliant British restaurants in London The Metropolist

(http://www.themetropolist.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Roast-Duck-andConfit-Leg.jpg) If you’re after bags of longstanding tradition paired with exclusively British ingredients, look no further than London landmark, Simpson’s-in-the-Strand. The super central haunt has been dishing out classic combinations for over 185 years. Simpson’s has recently jazzed up its much-loved menu with seasonally inspired eats like smoked mackerel and watercress salad with celeriac, apple and mustard dressing; and roast duck and confit leg with caramelised chicory and summer squash puree (pictured). However, the old favourites still remain. These include the roast saddle of lamb; steak and kidney pie and of course their famous speciality of Scottish beef on the bone, aged for 28 days and carved at guests’ tables from antique silver-domed trolleys – a practice that began over 150 years ago. Thirteen for dinner, devilled risotto, bloody beef pie and smoky crushed ice? It can only be Halloween at the Savoy. The Savoy has been the last word in decadence since the 1800s, but as well as glitz and glamour, the hotel has skeletons aplenty in its closets. As legend has it, Woolf Joel, the South African diamond magnate, held a dinner at the hotel in 1898 for 14 friends, but one cancelled at the last minute. As anyone with an ounce of superstition (or who has read Harry Potter) knows, when 13 dine together, the first to rise will be the first to die. Joel was shot in Johannesburg weeks later. Ever since, whenever tables of 13 have sat at the Savoy, they have been joined by Kaspar (the best fed sculpture of a cat anywhere in London), who later gave his name to their restaurant. This Halloween, for the spooky cost of £1313.13, 13 guests can book a private room and a fivecourse menu, with the option of Kaspar’s company. Chef Holgar Jackish has put together a truly spooky sounding menu, including a black devilled risotto, smokey green crushed ice, bloody beef and pumpkin pie and (of course – this is the Savoy) a glass of champagne. If you are looking for a place to celebrate Halloween in luxury, look no further.

e words ‘classic luxury’ evokes certain images. A sleek Aston Martin, for example. A silk Oscar de la Renta evening dress. A Steinway and Sons grand piano. And, in my opinion, there can’t be many more perfectly matched combinations than the triumvirate that is The Martini and Oyster experience at The Savoy Hotel. The Savoy has been an iconic part of the London landscape since it was opened in 1889 – a hotel of elegance, grandeur and opulence, it was famous for introducing constant hot and cold water, electric light, electric lifts, and many other innovations that earned it such immediate credibility. Since then the marble-pillared, chandelier-draped interior has drawn gasps of delight from guests, whether lucky enough to stay at the hotel itself, or indulging in the variety of eating and drinking options that allows one to appreciate The Savoy without the coveted room key. One of these is The American Bar – an ultra slick yet charmingly cosy room done out in hues of pale yellow and rich mahogany with the depth and shine of melted chocolate. In the centre stands a grand-piano – the keys of which are expertly tinkled with half-way through our visit by a very dapper gentleman – and there are various nooks and crannies to ensconce yourself and pretend you’re in the drawing room of one of Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The whole experience feels fabulously exclusive, and making an effort with attire is all part of the fun.

Well, now this image of refinement has been enhanced with the addition of a new martini experience – and trust me when I say ‘experience’, because this isn’t just about enjoying a perfectly made cocktail. The Savoy Oyster and Martini Package is about care and ritual – a celebration of a more refined way of life, that shakes its head at the idea of premixed drinks and fast snacking. Here you can enjoy an ice-cold Grey Goose Vodka Martini mixed your way, served in a Baccarat Crystal Martini Glass and accompanied by a trio of garnishes and half a dozen West Jersey Rock oysters. The whole serving appealed to my love of ceremony as soon as it was presented – I defy any cocktail lover not to be enamoured with the bespoke curving silver box, designed to specifically hold the various condiments and elements of your ideal drink. The idea is take your martini – crisp and clear as an Alaskan winter morning – and garnish in any way you choose. The options are classic lemon peel, a balsamic pickled tomato, or – surely the most luxurious garnish I’ve ever come across for a cocktail – a plump caviar stuffed olive. We chose to add the twist of lemon, so that the citrus infused delicately with the vodka. A good martini is all about balance – after all, you’re drinking pure spirit here – and this one was obviously superb. Made with bespoke Savoy Cocchi Vermouth and a dash of limited edition Savoy Martini Bitters, it had an almost umami-esque quality that made each sip thoroughly addictive. In between tastes, we popped the olives into our mouths, savouring the salty burst of caviar, and finished with the wonderful sweet-sharpness of pickled tomato. And to complement the natural sweetness of the martini were six huge oysters, laid out glistening in their half-shell and calling out for the various home-made dressings (and that mini tabasco! I was equally excited by this discovery). Each swallow evoked that incredible briny taste of the ocean as we swilled them around in our mouths, leaving behind the indescribable sea-taste that accompanies the image of a breaking wave. A sip of the crystal-clear martini, and it was the perfect combination. It’s safe to say the experience was completely adored by both my guest and I – we saw many other visitors looking over eagerly, no doubt also wanting to order this indulgent feast. The Savoy is a place to escape the chaos and business of London – a return to the more elegant and cultured time – and I can think of no better place than The American Bar, and no better activity than ordering the Oyster and Martini Package.

Interviews

Haddy Jadma, FiveStar Luxury Butler Have you ever checked into a plush hotel, been allocated a butler and wondered what on earth you could ask them to do for you without appearing to be a demanding diva? Many people have told us that rather than finding a hotel butler service a welcome addition, they have found the experience somewhat awkward. We took the opportunity to interview luxury hotel butler Haddy Jadma from London’s 5star Savoy hotel to find out what it’s like to be a lady butler, how she puts her guests at ease and what you can and cannot ask a butler to do. Read Q's and A's> Q. Haddy, it’s great to meet a lady butler. What was your career path that brought you here? Well, I studied Hotel Management at university and became part of the preopening team when the Savoy was refurbished in 2010 during my final year at university. I started off as a butler coordinator, 9/9/2016

Q. So the question on everybody’s lips is “what can you and what can’t you ask a butler to do”? Most people have never had a butler so this question arises a lot. Basically we will provide anything that our guests request as long as it’s legal. Our standard or most commonly requested services include packing and unpacking of suitcases, booking travel or a restaurant, shoe shine, tying a bow tie or shopping on behalf of a guest. We are effectively your PA whilst you are staying with us. Guests can also send a prearrival list of requests such as the types of products they would like in their rooms, flowers, fruit etc. Q. It is perfectly OK to ask your butler to run a bath for you then? Absolutely, but we won’t just fill it with water, we’re likely to add some aromatherapy oils or even some roses petals or candles. We can also provide a romantic turn down which includes a trail of rose petals from the door and scattered on the bed. Some guests opt for in roomdining, which is a private dining experience, much the same as it would be in the restaurant and served course by course.

Some guests opt for in roomdining, which is a private dining experience, much the same as it would be in the restaurant and served course by course. Q. The first time I was offered an unpacking service by a male butler, I was mortified that he would be handling my ‘smalls’. [Laughs] That’s why guests can opt to have a male or female butler do their packing and unpacking! In fact, for religious purposes, some guests will insist on having a female butler. Q. What other things do you offer female guests? Most commonly we’re asked for things like hair straighteners, sanitary products, clothes steamers and shaving kits, or to assist in putting an outfit on, adjusting wardrobe malfunctions or with a tricky zip. Q. The milliondollar question is, of course; what unusual or tricky requests have you had? The memorable ones that gave me a bit of a challenge were the man who wanted a very rare ‘cult’ book, which we managed to source for him from a specialist book shop. Then there was a man who was looking for something to do on Christmas Day and another who was desperate to eat alligator meat. Q. How does being a butler at such a high standard hotel affect you in your personal life? Well I’m a ‘killer packer’ for sure, I wrap my clothes in tissue paper and everything is perfectly placed so as not to crease. But on the downside I can never settle in a restaurant where the service isn’t spot on. I’m always watching and mentally correcting things. Q. And the perks? There are so many, FRHI is a great company to work for, there are so many strong female role models. We socialise together and I regularly take my team out to let off steam together and show my appreciation. We even have our own staff gala dinner. This job wouldn’t be the same without all the wonderful people I get to meet including the Hollywood star who I get to see painting when he’s here. There is one particular Arabian woman who treats me as one of her friends, offering to make me a drink whilst I unpack her belongings. Q. What do you do when you’re not making everybody else’s lives magical? http://www.maidenvoyage.com/interviews.aspx 9/9/2016

I love to socialise, let my hair down and dance! I love to do Polynesian dance, street dance, belly dancing and salsa. Q. And finally, what is your favourite hotel in the world? I love Raffles in the Seychelles. So next time you’re travelling and you have the privilege of a butler service, embrace the experience, be kind in return and hope that you get somebody like the amazingly enthusiastic, warm and friendly Haddy.

"For a hotel like QT, these museumquality art works are like jewellery," Love says.

"They add one more layer [to the] sophisticated, privileged experience that they offer their guests." The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai is also taking art off the wall. The hotel invites artists of all kinds – including musicians, dancers, filmmakers, photographers – to apply for a residency of three to six months. In return, each artist is asked to leave a "trace" of their stay, which is then displayed online in the hotel's virtual museum. Even more traditional hotels are getting in on the act. London's Savoy Hotel has been building a contemporary art collection since 2011. As might be expected from such a historic property, The Savoy favours figurative art, and commissions pieces that have a direct connection with the hotel. "All of the artists have been immersed in the hotel for a period of time, so that the culture and heritage of the hotel is linked to each piece," says art consultant Sally Vaughan of Go Figurative, who works with The Savoy. Recently acquired works include a panoramic David Downes painting of the River Thames as seen from the hotel roof, and a triptych by Dawn Coulter Cruttenden titled The Legend of Melba. The triptych commemorates the invention of the peach melba dessert by Savoy chef Auguste Escoffier. "The hotel has been a source of inspiration for each of these pieces; they could really only work in the hotel," Vaughan says. No hotel group is more fully committed to contemporary art than Australia's Art Series hotel group. Each of its seven properties is dedicated to, and named after, a specific artist. Melbourne is home to The Olsen, The Blackman, The Cullen and The Larwill,
