COVER STORY

Club Classic: A Tradition in the Making By CARMEN BATES

draw. Club Classic continues to be a sponsor, so you can be sure to catch the best views from the Club’s patio, particularly because the boats finish in front of the club.

A sister to The Classic Cafe, Club Classic opened its doors in 2008 and has been rockin' ever since. Located on the water at 2513 Nasa Parkway in Seabrook, their "midJOHN town feel" gives Bay Area residents ENNIS an upscale getaway right in their photos own backyard. This "new" tradition is sure to be a hit for many years to come.

Coming soon, patrons can also enjoy live jazz and blues on Wednesdays from 7 to 11 p.m. Starting in October, expect a

more expansive food menu which is currently in the works. It will offer the same great taste as the Classic Cafe’s menu, but with an upscale flavor. The menu will elude a true American bistro appeal, Wev explained, with an addition of upscale desserts to follow soon after.

From comfy couches to trendy decor, this cool lounge environment is enough to "wow" and welcome patrons of all drinking ages. Even nicer is the smoke-free environment inside, with the chance to escape outdoors to a waterfront balcony deck if you need a change of scenery. In the next few months, Club Classic will be transforming the exterior to match the inside of this venue: laid back and modern. The Club’s deck is the largest in the Bay Area, and has a panoramic view of Clear Lake. The patio will soon feature the Waterfront Winebar, the only one of its kind in the area. "Wines from around the world will be available, with prices that beat out other area winebars, with bottles starting at $20. You can also save money by the glass, with prices starting at $6 (most places start at $9 or $10)," said Manager of Operations Matt Wev.

Club Classic is open on Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sundays from noon to 2 a.m. Happy hour is Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Specials include $3 wells, $3 import drafts and $4 for a glass of wine. This trendy venue is available for private parties and catering, including wedding receptions. Interested parties can rent out the entire place on the weekends, or have them cater offsite for up to 175 people. For more information, contact Matt Wev at 713-319-7156.

For those special or extra fun occasions, Club Classic offers bottle service starting around $150. Friday and Saturday nights will soon see a slight change: Club Classic will host live bands from 7 to 11 p.m. and a live DJ from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Their entertainment line-up and more can be found on www.myspace.com/seabrookclubclassic.

Whether you are out celebrating or just relaxing, make sure you party the night away and start a new tradition with your friends at Club Classic this month.

Starting September 10, Club Classic will host stand-up comedy Thursday nights from 9 to 11 p.m. featuring some of Houston's funniest comics.

niversary to the day things got wacky. The best is yet to come. ---------------------------------------------------

We took in lots of music this month starting with a venture to the Heights White Linen Event where League City's own Myrna Sanders led a contingent of Ladies' of the Lakers (Gail Bixler, Cisco, Marie Angel, and Robin Kirby) to entertain the eclectic district. New to the beat this month was the acoustic version of Mike and Linda Lambert's Spart Parts Band joining up with Celeste Terrell on the Clifton's stage. We've never caught a Spart Parts act before and hopefully, this won't be the last time. Had they brought their entire band, these cats could very well have fit in at the Jim Shortt Memorial Celebration. We were privileged to catch Slide Effect on stage at the Heads & Tails electric jam before that gig takes a well deserved rest. We also got to double check what we earlier thought were some good acts and happy to say we got those down right. The big event of the month and perhaps the year was the Jim Shortt Memorial Celebration. Photos from that event are available (jimshorttmemorial.shutterfly.com) with proceeds

The Last Waltz: We dropped in on what was the final electric open mic session at Heads & Tails for awhile. With crawfish season over and school back in session, the post-Ike outpost, Lynn, Pat & Cisco will be taking a well deserved break from the Tuesday night gig that's been running steady since the start of the year. Cheers to a job well done! With Papa Bluez and the regulars on hand, we took in the last inspired song and dance for awhile -- the kind you know when you feel it... All the best!

Billed as Houston’s Largest Homebrew party, the Lunar Rendezbrew is an American Homebrewers Association (AHA) approved homebrew competition and arguably the most prestigious annual event on the Lonestar Circuit, a collection of Texas-based homebrew competitions. Over the years, the awards ceremony has involved into a family-friendly celebration offering great beer, live music and good food. And more good beer! SCENE Brewery Tour • Part 3

Rahr & Sons Brewery in Fort Worth Opened in 2004, Rahr & Sons Brewery will celebrate their 5 year anniversary this fall. Located at 701 Galveston Avenue, in the business and warehouse district of Fort Worth, it is owned by Fritz and Erin Rahr. During the first year total sales were 800 bottles of beer. By 2010, it is projected that sales will be 12,000 barrels (almost 4 million bottles). Fritz Rahr is a fifth-generation brewer. His great-grandfather opened the family’s first brewery in Wisconsin in 1837, making their business the oldest held by the same family. After a fire completely destroyed the original building, the town came together to help rebuild in 1860. During the years of Prohibition, the company began to mill cereal malts, flour, wheat, and grains. Rahr & Sons Brewery employs five to six full-time brewers, many part-time bottlers, and countless volunteers that help with tours. The brewery is open every Saturday for a tour of the facility.

The tour runs from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. The cost is $5, and a pint glass is included for sampling the beer. Live music can be heard, and Arisan Bakery brings in baked goods made from the spent grains. On Wednesday nights, tours run from 5 p. m. to 7 p.m. These tours feature Brew Masters Selections. These are specialty beers created by the brew masters as a way to give back the love to beer enthusiasts. Due to the smaller batches in the 150 gallon systems, customers are treated to a different beer every week. Rahr beer can also be found in restaurants around the Fort Worth area, such as Fork & Cork, Flying Saucer, and Brick House. Smaller craft shops, as well as Spec’s carry a variety of Rahr beer products. - Continued on Page 35

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE Following Vallejo at Scout Bar Up: This past month, we double checked a few of our previously mentioned over-the-top encounters to be sure. We swung by Domino Taylor's listing of the Bay Area Bluegrass Association (www.bayareabluegrass.com) and walked into not only a building full of music-loving picking and grinning but also the Texas State Mandolin championships. Holy Cow! Check it out, you and the family can't go wrong. We swung by Amadeus checking out Claudio's Monday night open mic and were treated to the ohso-sweet Lilly St. George. We think Jim would've loved this place at that moment. The Mother's Speakeasy electric open mic was going strong. With nice supKalakaua at T-Bone Tom's port from area musicians out sharpening their chops and a crowd dancing, this isn't a bad little hangout for a Monday night. We had assignments to find the best pizza and cold beer in the area and so we visited owner Rena at Al Capone's and enjoyed a wonderful supreme pizza stuffed full of all the Open Mic hearty stuff while enjoyat ing the Mother’s acoustic version of Jeremy Bradshow. We can't wait to try the rib eye panini and Tiramisu. Kalakaua, the band from the Cleer Creek Class of 2009 continues to show their chops at T-Bone Tom's and rolled out some of their originals this month. These guys could be like Vallejo and are slated to be the opening act at the Clifton Fall Music

Texas State Mandolin Championships Festival October 10, looking forward to that. Rock solid was Vallejo (www.vallejomusic.com) headlining at Scout Bar. OrigiJeremy Bradshaw nally from El Campo and now ever-popular in Austin (with over at Al Capone's 295,000 myspace hits to prove it), they're always a treat whenever they pass through. Next month, we'll check out some new stuff but just before the anniversary of the hurricane, we wanted to be sure.

Jim Shortt Memorial Celebration A who’s who of musicians & bands took to the stage to honor the late Jim Shortt

FROM THE SOUL: Hundreds gathered paying tribute to the legendary Jim Shortt and if it were possible, hundreds more would have come if they could. The event was smoothly spearheaded by the Blues Hound, James Nagel. Assisting was Texas Hall of Famer Tommie Lee Bradley, Mark & Lisa at the Cockeyed Seagull, the cast of volunteers, musicians, friends, family, Mark Fryslie's Seagull staff. Beforehand, Carolyn Wonderland predicted "man, that's gonna be a burner! I bet he'll get a kick out of it from upstairs." She got it... The music cooked all day long and on the menu was a full slate of music from the soul. Powerful soul, bluesy soul, funky soul, some sassy soul, steamy sensuous soul, summertime soul, smooth soul, swinging soul, Blues Brothers soul, smashing soul, grinding soul, sweet sweet soul. Couldn't have been ordered up any better... The heat in the packed kitchen couldn't keep away the faithful and the afternoon sun pouring onto the Cockeyed Seagull stage was purely serene. The place sounded better than ever with Rob Car-

roll on the board and turnarounds were all so smooth with Lynn Raggio and Pat Beadles getting bands set. Putting forth the day of inspired performances were Slide Effect, Ronnie Hall and the Green Onions, The Delta Flyers, Dave Neveling Band, The Revelators, The Grateful Geezers, Trudy Lynn, Annette Motoyer, George T Brown and The Pee Wee Bowen Band. Jim could have written pages on each from that day. Colleen, Lolly and Marcus pulled off the auctions with highest bids going for a guitar donated by Danny D's, a Jim Shortt photo compiled by J.J. & Andy, and tables of other silent auction goodies. T-shirt donations from CHS Launch Services kept the rafflers busy. Baked goods and food were just right with Joley Zajor and Big Country pulling incredible grill duty. The coveted Radar O'Rielly volunteer award goes to the ever plunking John Honda. With a preponderance of musicians, club owners and patrons of other music venues in attendance, the day was truly about the music. - Andy Eng

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE "Jim's not really gone, he's just on a bigger photo shoot." The Blues Hound "Jim was a great friend to me and great supporter of live music and musicians in our area. I don't believe he's gone. I just feel like he's really, really, REALLY late." Tommie Lee Bradley "One of the fondest memories I have of Jim is when I was a young girl, my dad and I spent the evening at his house playing a card game called Barbados. I learned a lot that night." Brandi Allen Raggio "Jim was a very special friend. Played lots of bridge with my wife." Pee Wee & Jerry Bowen "I first met Jim at Cockeyed Seagull several years ago. I sat in with Phil Johnson & sang two songs. Jim started calling me "The Creole Bomb Shell." He was a wonderful man & will truly be missed. Jim I love you and your family will stay in my prayers." Annette Metoyer "Jim introduced me to a pretty lady. He told me she would be perfect. Now she's my wife." Lanis Neugent "One of Jim's outstanding attributes was his total commitment to unpunctuality he'd call and tell me - 'Be sure and do that song I was to hear!' By the time he finally showed up, we'd already played it, so we did it again! Love to Jim Shortt." JB (John Bockelman) "Jim once got Lightning Hopkins to drive him around and play and sing for him all night for a bottle of whiskey. "Once Jim & I were at the Sportsman's Club to hear Trudy Lynne and stayed 'til 7:30 a.m., but Jim got mad at me for leaving so early. "Once Jim & I were so late to a social function that everyone was gone when we arrived." Mike Davis "Jim was the cornerstone of the Galveston Bay area music scene. His legacy lives on through his photos, commentary and the numerous fundraisers he coordinated. Jim's passion for helping others was inspirational and unsurpassed. He is probably organizing a fundraiser at this moment...we just haven't gotten the flyers yet. God bless Jim Shortt!" Lynn Raggio

Continued From Page 44 Rahr & Sons Brewery boasts several nationally awarded beers, including 2009 Best of the Rockies Winner- Summertime Wheat, 2009 Atlanta Gold Medal WinnerBlind Salamander, and the 2008 National Grand Champion at the United States Beer Tasting Championship - Iron Thistle Scotch Ale. The brewery produces twelve different beers. A few brews to keep in mind are the Blonde Lager which is a light, crisp summer beer that is a great transitional beer. Buffalo Butt has more of a roasty flavor, while remaining a light tasting beer, while Bucking Bock is a crisp Helles bock. Ugly Pug is a black lager that is surprising. It is a dark beer, but isn’t a heavy one, with a 2.5 gravity, it is a beer that you will be able to have several of without feeling full. Storm Cloud IPA is leap frog hoppy. It is smooth, but has just enough bite to stay on the back of the tongue. Owner Fritz Rahr’s goal is “something to cool you down, not fill you up. It needs to be light and refreshing.”

seasonals that will be on tap soon are the Oktoberfest and Winter Warmer. The Oktoberfest is on the mark of Munich, Prosit! Late in the year Winter Warmer will be out. This is aged three months in wooden bourbon barrels. With a hint of mace, this is the perfect winter-time beer. Rahr only brews 20-30 barrels, so be on the lookout for this rare treat soon. For beer enthusiasts who are looking for a new beer to try, check out Rahr beer. Other upcoming events and details can be found on their website, www.rahrbrewing.com. In the words of J.D. Flowers, head brew master, “Sure, there is stress, sure there are production problems, but at the end of the day - we’re brewing beer, and that’s a damn fine job!” We raise our glass to you, Rahr & Sons, Salute!

101 18th Street, San Leon Like most of the San Leon area, 18th Street Pier was completely wiped out by Hurricane Ike. The 1,300 foot pier was completely swept away along with the building. There were only large chunks of concrete where the building stood. Yet by New Year’s Eve, 18th Street Pier was back and better than ever. This catastrophe allowed 18th Street to renovate and expand from 3,500 square feet to 5,000 square feet. The old pier was replaced with a new one and is currently the only pier open in Galveston County. The boat dock is completely rebuilt and operational. The building isn’t the only thing that has been upgraded. The bar and grill also boasts a new and improved menu.

that changed last year when Hurricane Ike came to shore. When Linda Chiappetta received word that Maribelle’s was gone, she was devastated. “I always knew we would be back, I just wasn’t sure when,” Linda recalled. After months of searching, the Maribelle’s family found a new home. With the generosity of several business owners as well as Joe Chiapetta, talk of Maribelle’s return was making its way through the community. In June, Maribelle’s opened its doors again. This time a little further inland, tucked in a shopping strip on Nasa Rd. 1. To celebrate their revival, Maribelle’s is hosting a Hurricane Party on September 12 with $3 "Ike Water" shots and $1 Jello Shots. Power hour runs from 10 to 11 p.m. with drink specials such as $2 domestics, $3 wells, call and premium drinks and $4 super premium drinks. Hobson’s Choice will return to the stage to help celebrate in true Maribelle’s style.

2009-2010 FASHION TREND REPORT Continued From Page 26 Cinching in the waist also streamlines the look. You can also mimic the feel of over the knee boots by wearing chunky knee topping socks with regular boots layered over dark tights. The high-waisted cigarette pants are great for the illusion of height and length but avoid the super flare-legged version this winter. To finish your sleek looks remember to keep the retro-aesthethic

flowing. For those not wishing to belt everything say hello to the Boyfriend Blazer. Roll the sleeves up and pair with leggings for a smart take on an old classic. For men in 2010 look for double breasted suits to come back in midnight to black to grey and blue hues. With tailored looks becoming a little tired, designers such as Armani and Burberry are deconstructing jackets and pants making them a little looser fitting and softer looking. Plaids and argyles are the patterns to have and look great layered and with chunky fabrics.

As designers release their 20092010 collections, this promises to be a very exciting year in fashion. Experts predict that we are emerging from the global financial crises and I believe we can expect to see a new standard of fashion materialize. New collections are almost always classically inspired but paired with exciting new pieces or made to be more edgy. Gucci was classically futuristic in shiny, shimmering fabrics and belted tunics with leggings. Prada, Chloe and TopShop are doing their part to make the thigh high boot a mainstream stay for winter.

Items to put in your closet for this winter and early part of next year consist of the chunky accessory and anything shiny or sparkling. We are seeing a resurgence of the defined shoulder- ala 1980s but today’s silouhette is very form fitting and sleek but with a firm shoulder poking out. In the 80’s shoulder pads depicted power and stature but now we want our power to remain sexy and feminine. Massive necklaces add dimension to plain tops and dresses while belts are still wrapping the waist in every shape. Skinny belts that wrap around the body multiple times OR one wide thick belt can adorn tunics and dresses. We first started to notice the ripped tights trend on the runway of Alexander Wang in Fall of ‘08, but many designers are following in line as the ‘80s era looks are peaking and waning. Ninety’s are next which, were clearly grunge so for the next few seasons we will be sure to see grunge wear creeping back in the mainstream style. Also, tights that are studded and bejeweled are gracing the seasons must-have list.

My favorite trend of the fall is going to be the thigh high boot. Thankfully society’s hang ups about women in knee-high boots have been long since vanished. So boots in 2010 will be anything but conservative. Of course the long lean models look fabulous in these boots, but how do you wear them if you are 5’5? The trick to keeping yourself appearing long and lean is to avoid “visual breaks.” Match your tights to the boots or tuck in skinny pants that compliment the color of the boots.

IKE’S ANNIVERSARY ADDS NEW ELEMENT TO ART SCENE E

ARTS

EN SC

By Peggy “Domino” Taylor Lights! Camera! Action! Upon the one year anniversary of Hurricane Ike this month, there is much reflection. There are memorials and there are rebirth celebrations. There are even parties echoing themes of ‘is that all you got!’ and ‘we are strong and have recovered.’ Some people have moved on with new surroundings, some have rebuilt to bigger and better, and still so many are still in the process of repairing or rebuilding all the damages to their homes, due to unfavorable decisions by FEMA or the disputes with the insurance companies (which I seem to be a card-carrying member of this group). We have smelt the mildew at work during the day to only return home in the evening to smell the same; then we have traded those odors in for Lysol and bleach. We have had a few bouts of anxiety if we see a bad storm on the water that produces a rough chop or a rising sea level. We have maneuvered around contractor’s vehicles, supplies, plywood, destroyed boats and much more. We have moved and packed and repacked

this show together from Hurricane Ike’s devastation.

Submerged, by Peter Janecke what is left of our belongings a hundred times if we moved them once. We have cried with and for our neighbors, but one thing is for sure, we are all blessed to have survived this hurricane and to be able to tell the stories of what nature dealt us last September. An art exhibit that proves we can once more, ‘make lemonade out of the lemons life gives you’ is the Flotsam and Jetsam Exhibit at The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (TAACCL). Although I am still working on my own piece of Ike Art, I commend and admire the creative artists that put

This juried and invitational event is an all media exhibition, made up exclusively of debris left from this storm’s wake, literally and figuratively. Flotsam is debris found floating or washed ashore, and Jetsam is cargo cast overboard to lighten the load. This must see art exhibit has pushed the imagination and creative interpretation of Ike’s aftermath. All the art is made from material used from the actual storm debris and offers up fresh life out of the devastation to the point of admired beauty. There are many anniversary celebrations this month around the Clear Lake - Bay Area and Galveston, but check this one out for one more feel-good experience. The Flotsam and Jetsam Exhibit will run through October 8. For more information on this and TAACCL, log on to www.taaccl.org . The admission is free, but if you have a little spare change in your pocket or purse, drop some in their donation box by the door, TAACCL received a hard blow also to its non-profit art gallery. TAACCL is located at 2000 NASA Parkway, Nassau Bay. Gallery hours are Tuesday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. TAACCL’s motto is “Bringing the Arts Together” but this month I do believe that they can state, ‘Bringing Ike Survivors Together’ through the gift of art!

This historical landmark not only took in four feet of water, but had damage to the bar, the roof, and all of the equipment inside. The porch was completely missing. “We found some items from T-Bone Tom’s, as well as some of Palapa’s chairs. Everything was jumbled into a big pile,” recalls new part-owner Heaven Padgett. Although the bar was closed from September to March, the biggest surprise to the owners was the undying community support to get the bar back up and running as quickly as possible.

Hurricane Ike Update:

A Community Working Together By Shannon Miller No one will soon forget how the Clear Lake area was ravaged by Hurricane Ike last year. Through the generosity and undying support of the community, many beloved hang-outs are back on their feet and have avoided a permanent last call. Be sure to be “SCENE” at a local watering hole and help celebrate Although it took a while, Outriggers bounced back from Ike stronger than ever with many improvements and upgrades for easier access including 700 linear feet of new the comeback of the community. dock space and a new walkbridge connecting the waterfront restaurant to additional parking under the Kemah/Seabrook bridge.

OUTRIGGERS 101 Bath Ave., Seabrook Due to its location, Outriggers not only sustained a large amount of damage from Hurricane Ike but the storm surge as well. Because of the high water levels, the restaurant and downstairs bar had to be completely renovated from top to bottom. However, in the midst of adversity, the crew at Outriggers took this opportunity to make improvements for easier access. Upgrades include 700 linear feet of dock space, with more room for boats to tie-off. Parking is now more convenient with the

addition of the walkbridge. The open-air Hula Bar is the perfect place to meet friends and enjoy live music. Outriggers is hosting a photo contest on September 12. Customers are asked to bring their pictures from Hurricane Ike. The best photographs will be permanently displayed on the walls of the Hula Bar downstairs. ----------------------------------

rant has been a local favorite. Due to the elevation of the restaurant, T-Bone Tom’s had five feet of water inside, as well as three inches of silt. Just about everything in the restaurant was ruined. Amazingly, the only thing to survive was approximately 350 pounds of vacuumpacked sausage. As a way to help their community, T-Bone’s gave away grilled sausage on a stick with an iced-down beer to local residents.

Coldfire. Check out the ad on the opposite page as Bakkhus is also having an appreciation promotion running through December that will result in a lucky patron and a guest being treated to a Greek Vacation in 2010.

to 11:30 a.m., where diners can enjoy specialty dishes as well as traditional meals. Some of The Classic’s unique menu options include Eggs Sardo (two eggs poached on an English muffin, topped with creamed spinach and Hollandaise) and Eggs Monique (two eggs poached atop two lump crab cakes, covered in Hollandaise.) Sip on a delicious drink options such as a mimosa, bloody Mary or their "infamous" Frozen Screwdriver.

By CARMEN BATES Grab your party hats! The Classic Cafe is celebrating 25 years serving Clear Lake! This family establishment opened in 1985 and has been home to traditional Americana-themed dishes and service since Day One. Family generations have eaten here and continue to dine as time passes and families grow. "We have people come in and tell us they ate here as kids with their folks, and are now all grown up and bring their own kids to eat here as well," said Manager of Operations Matt Wev.

Locals are well aware of the The Classic tradition of “The Back Door” – the full bar located in the rear of the building. This place is well-known for the strongestpoured drinks in the area, mentioned Wev. This local hangout has long been a Bay Area tradition, where everyone knows your name. "The staff at The Classic has been around for a long time, some even started here as teens and have grown with the restaurant."

The Classic Cafe offers wide variety of "down home" food with reasonable prices, which means you get a great value for your dollar. Among their menu selections are prime rib, meatloaf, and Friday nights feature snapper. A must-try appetizer would have to be the Sea Hogs, which are baconwrapped oysters and shrimp. If you're looking for some homemade comfort food, try their "Love" pies, which come in a wide variety of flavors like peach, coconut creme, Tollhouse, lemon meringue and more. This "company-insidethe-company" has been making pies "just like mom's" for 20 years and JOHN are known throughout the ENNIS community for their tasty photos reputation. If you're hosting an event in the near future, "Bring The Classic home" by using their catering services, with off-site catering from their menu for up to 175 people. For more information, call Matt Wev at 713-319-7156.

Happy Hour is from 2 to 8 p.m. daily and offers $2 domestic pints, 50 cents off all liquor and $3.50 glasses of wine. Mark your calendars for the 25th Anniversary Celebration on September 20. Owner Brad Emel and the staff at The Classic want to invite you to the largest tailgate party in the Bay Area. Catch all the action between the Texans vs. the Titans at The Classic Cafe starting with the pre-party at 11 a.m. and game time at noon. Make sure to bring your family and friends to the big tent and enjoy the televised game, food, fun, games and even a rockwall. There will be live music from 2 to 6 p.m., and the first annual Miss Classic Pomm-Pomm Girl contest will be held as well. There will be prizes awarded to the one who shows the most "Classic Spirit." This will be an event you can't miss. So grab all your favorite people and head down to The Classic Cafe this month, and don't forget to tell them, The SCENE sent you!
