The Management team at Tommy's is ready to serve you! Long-time seafood favorites include a delectable whole Maine stuffed lobster, various incarnations on salmon, tuna and redfish, and broiled and fried seafood platters. The succulent seafood and champagne pasta is a generous blend of shrimp, mussels, and calamari sautéed with onions and peppers, champagne garlic cream sauce and served over La Bella linguini. Tommy's cooks many of its food in the traditional Louisiana creole fashion. The dark roux seafood gumbo is an excellent testament to this cooking style. Chock full of shrimp, oysters and crawfish, it's the perfect starter to any entree. If you've got a lunch date, try the crawfish enchiladas, topped with pico de gallo and sour cream, or the shrimp, oyster or fish po boy, served fully dressed with ancho aioli chili sauce and French fries. If you still have room for dessert, I recommend the Jealousy – a puff pastry filled with raspberries and pears, served warm with raspberry and cream an glais sauces and vanilla ice cream.

By Adam Donaghey The heat has finally subsided in the Clear Lake Area – the air has gotten cooler, the long pants and sweaters come out, and most importantly, Oyster season is back. While the bays in Texas are currently closed, Louisiana opened November 1st. Kicking off the season appropriately, Tommy's Restaurant & Oyster Bar has brought back their famous Tuesdays & Fridays $5 raw oysters by the dozen in addition to adding a few new menu options. Recent management changes have also tweaked customer service for the better. Shown on the cover of this month's SCENE Magazine is Tommy's assembled team, including head chef Manuel Viveros, sous-chef Javier Viveros, front of the house manager Robin Ross, and bar manager Clay Phillips. For 17 years, owner Tommy Tollett has taken great strides to provide excellent customer service while serving quality food. The Viveros brothers have been a part of the Tommy's team since 2003. Manuel's extensive knowledge of fresh seafood, steaks and sauces cooked inhouse daily, has helped solidify Tommy's with the reputation of serving fantastic food. Manuel's brother, Javier, cooks on the line; he's a pro on the grill and perfects the sauces. New to the team is Robin Ross, Tommy's front-of-the-house manager. Her experience with fine wines is just one of the many qualities she brings to the table. Martinis are widely popular at Tommy's and Clay Phillips is to thank for that. A true mixologist, Clay has created a variety of delicious tasting martinis and other bar concoctions.

Pony up to the oyster bar and sample some of the tastiest oyster creations around. The iced oyster Mignonette serves oysters with champagne-vinegar, white wine, crushed white peppercorns, diced shallots, jalapeños and cilantro. An oyster shooter served with Creole Bloody Mary mix is the perfect way to kick off a hearty meal or have a fried oyster poor boy – lightly dredged in corn flour and topped with chipotle aioli sauce – if you'd like to make it an oyster meal.

“With this team, customer service has stepped up a notch,” said Tollett. “Patrons will notice new faces on the floor – both managers and servers – with more attention to detail and more product knowledge.” In addition to quality customer service, the team focuses on providing the best food possible. Always experimenting in the kitchen, Tommy and his chefs are constantly coming up with new ideas and combinations in an effort to create new and interesting dishes. Brand new to the menu is a fresh rainbow trout entree, stuffed with jumbo lump crabmeat dressing and topped with a meuniere sauce. Just in time for oyster season is Tommy's new Oysters Rockefeller recipe, featuring cream spinach with smoked tasso (ham) and andouille sausage. New to the happy hour menu is fried boudin, and if you're a steak fan, try the Bleu Cheese filet, topped with a wild mushroom demi-glace.

The food is delicious and the atmosphere is both casual and upscale at Tommy's; but if you're not necessarily looking for a full meal, the happy hour menu is a perfect choice for an appetizer and drinks. As mentioned earlier, martinis are all the rage at Tommy's and the classy horseshoe bar is a great place to drink them. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 4 to 6:30 p.m., and features $5 house martinis, along with $2.75 domestic beers, $4 house wines and well cocktails and a hodgepodge of menu items and appetizers ranging from $4 to $9 each. Try the mussels, sautéed in white wine, basil and lemon butter sauce, or the black and blue spicy tuna, thinly sliced and served with wasabi and pickled ginger. Tommy's is located at 2555 Bay Area Blvd in Houston and can be found on the web at tommys.com. Regular operating hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. Tommy's is closed on Sundays except for private events and holidays. Skippers offers cooking classes Imagine learning how to cook authentic Greek cuisine while you sit back and eat! Well, at Skipper's Fine Greek Cuisine, owner Terry Psarovarkas aims to please! Approximately every five to six weeks, Terri, a native of Greece, hosts an intimate cooking class at Skippers. For maximum impact and comfort, classes are limited to 20 people with seats always selling out quickly. Taste everything you see instructor Terry make. She teaches, while you eat and sample. During the presentation, participants get a souvenir recipe book to take home. Guests are welcome to make notes in their book as they watch Terry make traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka, lamb dishes, egg lemon sauce chicken or meatballs with rice, hummus, Baba ghanoush, walnut cake and Greek custard. Terry tries to change up dishes for each individual class so no two classes are identical. The next class is Thursday, December 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost of the course is $59.99 (plus tax) and includes the class plus an appetizer, salad or soup, the main course and even dessert. REALTOR RAISES MONEY FOR CHARITY Local RE/Max Realtor Priscilla Ennis held her 20th annual customer appreciation luncheon at Bay Oaks Country Club. She asked her guests to donate to Habitat to Humanity, one of her favorite charities. Ennis and her guests collectively raised and donated approximately $3,000 to Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. Ennis is pictured here presenting Natalie Ainsworth of Bay Area Habitat for Humanity with the donations from the luncheon. EDITOR’S NOTE: Since 1991, the Bay Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate has worked to provide residents of Galveston County and Southeast Harris County affordable housing. They are the largest non-profit builder in this area and the only builder in the locally who works with families whose income levels are less than 60% of the area medium income level. They are currently building in Dickinson and La Porte. Since 1991, BAHFH has moved over 80 families from deplorable conditions into decent living conditions.BAHFH homes cost $65,000 and appraise for around $90,000. Volunteers provide labor, funding, and in-kind donations to help fund these homes. The homes are then sold to the families at no interest over approximately 25 years.

Kennedy Dance Theatre announces Jete’ Company A beautiful "Ballerina Princess Tea" was recently held at the home of former Kemah Mayor Bill King to announce Kennedy Dance Theatre's 2011-2012 Jete' Company. All of KDT's younger aspiring ballerinas were invited to attend and wear their favorite princess outfit. After receiving special autographs of the company members, guests were treated to lunch and tea overlooking a picturesque waterfront view. A performance by Jete' topped off the afternoon with Milena Leben, Jete' Director & Choreographer, announcing the new company members and thanking everyone for sharing in this special event. Allegria Cook-Off Gives Back A group of judges and some of the cooks stopped for a photo at Allegria’s Etouffee Cook Off. The outdoor all-you-could-eat event helped raise several hundred dollars for Independence Village. Shell was a major participant in the event. Independence Village is a Local Adult Mentally/Physically Challenged Group Home in Texas City. This fundraiser is close to Suzanne Streetman's heart (owner of Allegria). "My brother lives there," explained Streetman. "We are so excited that we made enough money to take all of the residents and their staff out to dinner since there are about 27 of them and there is no budget at the home for an outing that expensive." The Laffite Project A Hix Brothers Documentary Series By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor At the recent City of Seabrook 50th Anniversary Festival an interesting booth received a lot of attention; the booth was the Hix brothers sharing the findings from The Laffite Project, a documentary on the real Jean Laffite, following the family to current. If you are into pirates, you will love it, even if one is not that into pirates, one will still enjoy the historic findings and the educational road to tracing the famous pirate’s family tree and the diligence of following every clue like detectives. In the age where genealogy is more common now and people are researching bloodlines as a new hobby. There are TV series, specials with celebrities and websites that are dedicated to tracing one’s heritage for centuries which proves most of society is curious where they come from and love legends. When the Hix brothers share their Year1800 documents from their family members and other museums and galleries about the ancestor with a possible, alias: Jean Laffite, one is hooked. The Laffite Project is their study of the real Jean Laffite, the famed pirate and following their own heritage from 200 years ago that follow their ancestors who where privateers in the 1800s. This documentary in process is by brothers Charles Hix and Cody Hix with their cousin Jay Hix Jones. Jay is a TV producer working with co-creator Tyler Townsend developing this document from the research. Jay is the associate producer of several TV series, including “1000 Ways To Die” for Original Productions, the production company for the popular “Deadliest Catch” and “Ice Road Truckers.” Jay pitched them The Laffite Project. Jay also just picked up a new gig producing “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Actor John Schneider got on board in a “through the grapevine” way and the documentary producing took off since the project was already in a development process. Charles Hix, a chiropractor and college professor and Cody Hix, a scuba instructor and adventurer are conducting this extensive research into the truth behind the legendary pirate, while uncovering paintings and records showing highly favorable signs this could be their relative.

Cody and Charles share the family legend passed down to them from through their great-grandmother. It’s been in their family for two hundred years. The Hix brothers’ mom and Jay’s mom fully support them in this family project as they man the booth, sharing with visitors who stop to hear the family legend and learn about the documentary filming. Cody stated, “We’ve heard the story that our ancestors were privateers from New Orleans, and they used an alias to hide their true identity to protect their family. That is what made us jump on this project.” All three of the Hix family knew they needed to do this project on Laffite, that is when Jay pitched it as a reality documentary about the search for pirate ancestors. The beginning started with viewing all family documents that were passed down and with a trips to New Orleans doing research that will amaze viewers as a possible new addition to history unfolding. Charles added that one of the discoveries that led to others, was that Laffite was an alias and possibly his name was Autheman, same as their privateer ancestor. They are not disputing history, but filling in the blanks with more research about Jean and his brother Pierre Laffite. Cody adds, “We will follow this project to the very end, but if our story handed down for generations turns out to not be true, we will be alright with it and we made a great documentary about knowing the real truth on Laffite and to have questions answered that have been lingering over the Hix family for 200 years.” This project is three years old and after bouncing around partnering with a network, they are going to fund it independently through investors to keep all editorial control. They are also looking for more investors . They have a supportive and working family behind them and actor John Schneider on board plus the history of successfully produced series under their belt; it seems like a great start. BOARDWALK PAYS TRIBUTE TO OUR NATION’S HEROES Texas Salute to Military Service slated to take place November 4-6 WHO: The Kemah Boardwalk, the Texas Salute to Military Service and the City of Kemah celebrate and honor our nation’s heroes through a weekend of entertainment, history and fun for everyone. WHAT: Kemah Boardwalk welcomes area residents and families to join in a celebration honoring the ones who give their lives every day to protect us. Starting November 4 through November 6, the Boardwalk will be transformed into a walking tour of the U.S. Army, Navy and Coast Guard. VETERANS HONORED DURING UH-CLEAR LAKE EVENT University of Houston-Clear Lake invites the community to the Veterans Day Celebration honoring veterans from every branch of service, past and present, Nov. 11, 10:30 a.m., in the university’s Liberty Park, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Speakers, fanfare and recognition will mark the annual event hosted by the university since 2003. In addition, in recognition of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the university will join “Remembrance Day National Roll Call,” a grassroots effort to honor fallen American service men and women. “Once again, UH-Clear Lake faculty, staff, students and administrators, as well as members of this community, have the privilege of honoring true heroes – the military veterans who have served our country in the past, as well as those currently serving, to protect the freedoms that we take for granted,” said Executive Secretary of University Advancement Cheryl Rohde, who serves as the event coordinator. “It is through the selfless efforts of these individuals, that we are truly blessed to live in the greatest nation on earth.” With a theme of “The Call to Serve,” the celebration will include keynote speeches by Cpl. UH-Clear Lake will join more than 145 colleges and universities across the country participating in the Roll Call event –a reading of names of the 6,200-plus casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Names of the fallen will be read starting at 7 a.m. until 10 a.m., when the opening music begins for the event, and resume after the event ends at noon. Community members are invited to participate and attend. The JuBellate Ringers Handbell Ensemble from League City United Methodist Church will perform the opening ceremony, with music beginning at 10 a.m. to welcome guests. By Brian Bohannon, Intern (UHCL) It does not take one long while driving through Seabrook to notice a plethora of brightly adorned pelicans greeting passersby from afront the local businesses. These sculptures are no new occurrence. This year marks the ten year anniversary of the Pelican Path Project , which was initiated in March of 2001. The Pelican Path Project, inspired by similar animal projects in Waco and Norfolk, Virginia, is the brainchild of co-founders Cheri Smith and Marcy Fryday. Since the projects inception, more than 40 unique pelican sculptures have popped up all around the city. When the project was first envisioned in June of 2000, the city of Seabrook was in the market for an idea that could help promote tourism while creating a unifying identity for the citizens and local businesses alike. Regarding the projects beginnings, Cheri Smith remarked, "When seeing just how much other public art

'critter' projects had been successful in other communities, we said "Why not!" The birds come in two body designs; the molds for which were created by Randy and Connie Lange of Progressive Fiberglass Fabricators. But why pelicans? The choice for which animal to represent the town was easy. Hundreds of brown pelicans claim permanent residence in Seabrook, as well as a host of migratory white pelicans during the months of September through April. However, the white pelicans aren't the only migratory birds of this area; the pelicans of the fiber-glass variety have not remained stationary either. The so-called Pelican Ambassador, dubbed "Sailing into Seabrook," has made it as far as Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago for a display. Others have left their roosts under not-so-dignified circumstances. Once upon a time the Scuba Pelican, normally known to frequent the front of Lance's Turtle Club, was found doing some solo diving in the pool

Artist Spotlight: Eric Klusendorf Kunu is the newest addition to the Pelican Path flock. He stands in front of the Texas Hippie Connection on Nasa Rd. 1 across from Lakewood Yacht Club. Kunu, who touched down in March 2010, is the work of artist Eric Klusendorf and of THC's owner Turtle. To give Kunu his signature look, the two first began with a sketch of their vision, which had to be approved by Pelican Path Project co-founder Marcy Fryday. Upon receiving the go-ahead, Klusendorf got to work on the design. He created the hat and shirt out of fiberglass, which he says will help this pelican outlast some of the others. Even his wire rim glasses are made with fiberglass formed in a

of a hotel down the street in a neighboring city. Several others also tested out their sea legs during Hurricane Ike. Oscar the Preacher floated all the way across NASA Road 1 before sinking to a watery grave inside a slip at Blue Lagoon. Another, named Chappy, who managed to get clear across 146 before getting caught up in the volleyball net at the former Bojangles. 2012 will be a year of revitalization for the Pelican Path Project. Marcy Fryday claims that there has been more demand than the group could keep up with and will be focusing exclusively on the project following the end of her term as President of the Seabrook Association in December. Proceeds from the pelicans go toward the maintenance of the project as well as a commission for the artists involved in creating and refurbishing the pelicans.

styrofoam mold. In addition to his use of fiberglass, Klusendorf used wood to help create Kunu's feet, which are unlike those of his peers. Anyone interested in seeing more of Klusendorf's other work may find it all around the Bay Area. He has painted many murals including work at the Evelyn Meador Library (where his 1997 book "GT's Hide-away is on display) and his "Bridge to Knowledge" at Stuart Elementary in Kemah. He is also currently working on a number of turtle sculptures, carved from tree trunks fallen during Hurricane Ike. These impressive sculptures may be seen in Clear Lake Shores on the corner of Ivy and Oak Streets.

HARVEST MOON REGATTA Along the beach of Galveston, Texas The SCENE is the Gulf of Mexico, just off the beach of Galveston Island. The action is intense, dangerous and fast paced as more than 180 large sailboats jockey for position in close quarters in an attempt to hit the starting line – what is left of the former Flagship Hotel – at just the right moment to get a fast start and early advantage in the 2011 Harvest Moon Regatta. And in the middle of all the action is the smallest sailboat (a 26-footer) on the water. The 26’ Pearson Sailboat, the “Alyzarian,” just recently returned from the “Guitar Strings & Sailboat Things” tour by boat with featured 33 shows in 38 days up and down the Texas coast. Captain Marc Borde, better known as a Singer/Songwriter/Music Producer (Shark Attack, The Crew & Borde Room Entertainment), tells us as we approach the Houston Ship Channel, “You have no idea what you are in for.”

Although too small to enter the regatta, the Alyzarian proved up for the challenging sea and offered a great, on-the-water view of the action. LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 57 PINK FLOYD James Reese @ Katies for REVISITED: The ‘Pink Floyd Revisited’ SCENE's stalwart R&B and Blues house, Katie's, hosted Alvin's Mast Blues Channeler, James Reese, together with Terrance Glenn (Guitar), Westside Johnny (bass) J.C. Chamberlain (Drums), and Kenny Mathews (keys) presenting an evening of cuts from The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and Dark Side of the Moon. I saw Pink Floyd on their Division Bell Tour and not sure even the Floyd tried such a play list. This was the fifth time James and the boys presented this project and given each musician's busy schedule, a couple degrees more difficult than, no dis intended, an evening of other tribute bands. The blues friendly crowd and staff at Katie's relished the local interpretation of the time-tested classics rarely heard live on the beat and in some cases, last heard live in the ’70s. We're not sure if the late Jim Shortt enjoyed Pink Floyd, but positive his love for blues for which we're certain we heard

"BRAVO" several times that night. One album not on the line-up list was Greatest Dance Music, but not to worry, the Katie's crowd in full Halloween regalia handled that without a hitch. Pressing forward.... GO FORWARD BOLDLY: We've heard this term before and this month, witnessed it first hand tagging along with the Clear

Lake Cross Fit Training Club at this year’s annual Houston Mud Run benefiting the fight against MS. Folks, we enjoy live music where performers immerse into giving it their all. Faces don't lie and these consummate sport enthusiasts wear it just as well – Gotta love them. The course was lined with 31 obstacles of strenuous challenges so we parked a zoom lens at the one where contestants leaped from a 10-foot perch into a muddy pool of gunk. We witnessed countless looks of initial apprehension, fear, resolve, determination, pure craziness, accomplishment and joy of surviving the plunge. This was not just about the challenges of the course, but to life for which gusto prevails, and so we add this to our curriculum of Growth and Development. Cheers to all who partook for taking life by the horns.... The holidays are around the corner. Thanks for reading and see you out on the SCENE!

We asked Ryan what it was like working with the three Houston sports legends. “Nolan Ryan is all about business, very professional and extremely easy to work with. I was told that over the past 25 years he has only done signings for or through two gentlemen. I was fortunate earlier this year to work my way in with one of those guys, and we hit it off, which allowed me to move forward and secure Nolan to participate in my ‘#34s’ project. He is great to work with and as classy as he appears on TV.” “Earl (Campbell) and I have been working together for a while now. We started off just on the business side of things, and now I manage a majority of his signings and public appearances. But we are now friends first. He calls to check on my nephews, and I call to check on his knee replacement. It’s great, and we have a bunch of projects coming up next year that we are working

As a matter of fact, before I closed our deal in June, he hadn’t done a signing in more than six years. And then when we sat down to knock out the signing, it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had with an athlete. He was all business and very professional. But when we started giving him different action photos to sign, he started doing ‘play-by-play’ and referring back to those games by testing us if we could identify the playoff series the photo was from,

“In this business, things change daily, and you never know who might call and propose a deal to you,” Ryan said when asked what is next. He explained how he had just returned to town following a signing with Mike Tyson and now (as of press time) preparing for his upcoming trip for a special signing featuring the only three living Triple Crown-winning Jockeys. A glance at Ryan’s website and Facebook page with photo galleries of him networking with hundreds on professional athletes ranging from Arnold Palmer to Shaquille O’Neal may look like all fun and games. But don’t let that fool you. There is a lot of travel, work and plenty of risk at play. “I’m extremely fortunate, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not grateful for it.” Ryan said. “But behind the scenes it is like any other business – it can be extremely stressful and a lot of work.”

Fiterman Sports Group Brings Fans & Athletes Together By John Ennis The SCENE is the Pearland headquarters of the Fiterman Sports Group. Founder Ryan Fiterman apologizes for the “mess.” True, the large multi-room warehouse looks like a sports memorabilia tornado just blew past leaving stacks of signed jersey’s, helmets, baseballs, footballs and framed artwork in every direction. But only someone who never experienced a love affair with sports would have a problem with this visual. Others, including this writer, might describe the surroundings as a toy store for sports fanatics. Fiterman credits his older brother DJ Fiterman for assisting him in building the business. He said, “DJ is my right hand man and helps me every step of the way with growing my business.” He boasted how DJ is currently the JV basketball coach at their alma mater Deer Park High School where, incidentally, they both enjoyed playing basketball. Ryan, who spent two years as manager of the men’s basketball team while in school at the University of Houston and two years as a scout for the Houston Rockets, is busy preparing for his next public signing. This one will bring reigning NFL rushing champ and star Houston Texan running back Arian Foster to Buffalo Wild Wings in Webster during Monday Night Football (Monday, November 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.) for an appearance and autograph

This event is just one of many signs that the Fiterman Sports Group has grown since it was founded in September of 2008. “Originally, I wanted to be a NBA agent. So I went to work for an agent only to decide that wasn’t the path for me.” Ryan explained. “So I started this business and never looked back.” Ryan’s first client was former Houston Rocket Tracy McGrady. “McGrady hadn’t done an autograph signing in about 12 years,” Ryan said. “I told him what I was doing, starting my own marketing and memorabilia firm. He was comfortable with me because we would see each other several times a day when I worked for the Rockets. So we came up with a number that worked for both of us, and it really put me on the map right away because he was a superstar who hadn’t done a signing for so long. It was a great boost to start things off, and it was very successful. I sold out before I even did the signing. From there, I just started calling on the contacts I had, including players for the Texans. I invested in another signing, and it had a snowball effect. Now I’m coordinating more than 100 signings a year.” Ryan is quick to point out that his business is based on more than just an autograph, but the relationship between fans and athletes and the lasting memories that often result from their interactions.

“I make sports heroes accessible to their fans and the local community,” Ryan said. “One perfect example is the upcoming Foster event.” Not only will fans of Foster have an opportunity to get his autograph (see ad on opposite page), but Arian has agreed to visit and pose for a picture with every autograph ticket holder, a very nice gesture and one sure to leave some positive memories for those in attendance. Foster is just one of an impressive and growing stable of athletes who Ryan has worked with. COMFORTABLY NUMB: Newly added to my own watch list is Infinity’s Twin from Spring, Texas. We mentioned earlier the OverThe-Top show with Barrage and the Space Center Intermediate. I finally caught Infinity's Twin for the first time at Union Tavern and on stage spotted a Infinity's Twin @ five-string fretless Union Tavern bass played as in upright manner, a seven-string electric, and an electric fiddle plugged into a Digitech effects box and Marshall to go along with the Bonhamesque drum kit and biggest set of mains we've ever seen on the local SCENE. Get the drift? High energy, new world alternative rock with arena quality sound unleashed for the Union Tavern crowd tis what it be. These cats have played at the Scout Bar and Zone 504 which qualifies their credentials. The highlight of the evening was their rendition of Comfortably Numb grabbing the crowd and Union Tavern staff by the jugular. You get the idea whenever the staff stops, watches, and applauds.... Cheers! On a side note, if you're a Saint's fan, the Union Tavern is your place. We stopped in one Sunday afternoon while the Texans, the Cowboys, and the World Series were going on yet the majority of the house were there for the Saints game in a BIG way plus a KILLER spread. Just sharing, for you Who Dat fans. Back to the music... Indisputable is the bluesy element with Comfortably Numb and Pink Floyd which leads us to...

Before the month got started, the SCENE's Director of Growth and Development had a discussion with me on some new areas she thought needed coverage. OCTOBER SKY: Kudos to the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s entertainment committee for this year's Ballunar Liftoff Festival. They stepped up Friday night's music at least seven clicks on the Moxie Dial bringing in the super hot Fried Ice Cream. Yup... You don't see these cats around the SCENE as they're regional and often locked up at private parties, so folks, we got ourselves a musical treat from the Chamber. The Ballunar Liftoff Festival is one of Clear Lake's annual banner events and gets better every year. Our local space program is in hiatus but that didn't stop the festival one iota, ever sharing with our youth of all ages with the coolness of math and sciences through air sport demonstrations. We saw many SCENE readers at this years festival and know you know. Speaking more of growth and development...

What You Need To Know Right Now About FROM GUTS TO GLORY By Rhonda Meredith Local favorite From Guts To Glory recently released their self-titled debut CD and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. The alternative rock band has been working hard and nonstop for the past five years to achieve the success that is so richly deserved. Backed by I-10 Records and managed by I-10 Productions, From Guts To Glory has steadily built their fan base one gig at a time. They have received some awesome accolades like winning the Texas Buzz Alternative Band of the Year Award in 2009 and the Texas Buzz Band of the Year in 2010. Unfortunately, through some gross injustice, the band was not nominated in any the Houston Press Awards for 2011. The guys took it all in stride and stayed classy when commenting about it on their Facebook page. From Guts To Glory is the real deal and everyone knows that winning an award (or not) doesn’t change a thing. Their fans absolutely adore the band.

I remember when I first saw From Guts To Glory perform at Scout Bar back on St. Patrick’s Day 2010. They were good then, but still have grown so much musically in the past year and a half. The new CD is a shining star. It’s packed with 10 quality songs for your listening pleasure. The first single released was the ballad “Greatest Part of Me.” The track shows one side of the talented musicians. The powerful “Take It Back,” to the raucous anthem “Voice of The South” to the harder sounds of “Drive Me Crazy,” and “The Fight” showcase just what From Guts To Glory have to offer. The band members are Drew Thomas and Jon Hendricks (guitars,) Aaron Thomas (percussion,) Matt Fogarty (bass,) and Jeremy Feller (vocals). Currently, the band has taken their “aggressive rock-and-roll sound” on a southern state tour. They will be back in Houston sharing the stage with The Hunger at Scout Bar on November 23. Then, From Guts To Glory will be touring regionally in January 2012.

First Samhain Fest at Big Ben on November 5 Since medieval times, Samhain, which means “summer’s end,” has been celebrated with a festival to mark the end of the harvest season. This year, the event will be hosted at Big Ben Tavern on Saturday, November 5 and will feature (a lucky) seven musical acts. “Samhain Fest will be a great way to welcome fall and also enjoy some great bands,” say Ryan McGuire of I-10 Productions. “This is one you won’t want to miss!”

The holiday season is upon us. And in the middle of all of the hustle and bustle is the bad-boy alternative rock band HINDER’s return to the Houston area. So double check the list you had made with everyone else’s gifts in mind and make sure your tickets to the December 7th show at Scout Bar are on it too… and underline it twice. There is no requirement to be on the “Nice List” to attend a HINDER show. In fact, the band prefers the fans on the naughty one!

Their music videos feature scantily clad women, their lyrics focus on sex and drugs, and in interviews the band members enjoy bragging about their conquests on the road. “It's good to have that kind of reputation,” says vocalist Austin Winkler. “We were backstage at a country singer's show, and we heard this guy over the radio say, 'HINDER is in the dressing room? Get my girlfriend out of there!'" HINDER got their start writing cocky post-grunge songs in 2001. When the band began getting regular gigs, they didn’t have a name. “We started to get frustrated, and we looked up 'frustrated' in a thesaurus and found “hinder.” I mean, it's kind of unique, but it's kind of boring," says Winkler. HINDER has a very strong stage show without the bells and whistles that is anything but boring. It’s all about the hard driving songs they perform with much emotion.

Joining Winkler onstage is Mark King and Joe “Blower” Garvey (guitars,) Mike Rodden (bass,) and Cody Hanson (drums.) The majority of songs on the past two albums (“Extreme Behavior” in 2005, and “Take It To The Limit” in 2008) have become instant modern classics: “Lips of an Angel,” “Get Stoned,” “Use Me,” “Without You,” and “How Long,” and many, many more hits… The trend is continuing with HINDER’s latest release “All American Nightmare” (2010). The first single was also the album’s namesake, “What Ya Gonna Do” followed, and “The Life” was just released at press time. The tour stop at Scout Bar on December 7 is in support of “All American Nightmare.”

While HINDER does like to live life to the fullest, they also are big fans of professional and college football.
