BAKKHUS TAVERNA Celebrates Summer with Craft Beer and Lighter Menu Items Overall, Greek cuisine is a good choice for a healthier lunch or dinner because of the emphasis on grilled meats, seafood and fresh vegetables. It is also a part of the Mediterranean diet that is considered to be a great way to eat within the dietary guidelines.
By Rhonda Meredith Bakkhus Taverna appreciates the brewers of local craft beer. Just steps away from the Kemah Boardwalk (at 605 6th Street), this locally owned restaurant offers several brands of craft beer for its discerning customers. According to the Brewers Association, the definition of craft beer is “beer made by a brewer that is small, independent, and traditional. It is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley; interesting and sometimes nontraditional ingredients are often added for distinctiveness.”
Start your visit at the restaurant with a light and delicious meze’, or appetizer. A good choice would be the grilled octopus or kalamari, and an order of tzatziki dip. Tzatziki dip is simply a homemade yogurt and sour cream based dip mixed with cucumber and garlic.
“I enjoy trying new beers that are brewed well,” said Bakkhus Taverna owner Demetrios Kouloumoundras. “There is a distinctive quality to craft beers' artisan style.” The “craft curious” can delight in choosing from the following Texas breweries: No Label (Katy), Rahr and Sons (Fort Worth), Southern Star (Conroe), Real Ale (Blanco), Karbach (Houston), St. Arnold’s (Houston), and soon Galactic Coast (Dickinson).
Kouloumoundras also noted that the variety of craft beer is seasonal; much like the menu at Bakkhus Taverna.
Greek salads are very popular as either an appetizer or even the main course. Bakkhus Taverna offers the classic Greek salad, Greek Village Salad, Aegean Salad with grilled tuna, salmon, or shrimp, and a grilled chicken salad. Grilled chicken and shrimp can also be found inside a pita along with sauteed vegetables. A veggie pita is an option as well.
The restaurant is serving lighter summer menu items. “In the heat of summer nobody really wants to eat food that will drag them down,” said Kouloumoundras. “We offer a selection of fresher, healthier food that won’t leave you feeling ‘heavy’ as the temperatures heat up.”
Seafood lovers will enjoy a delicious and healthy specialty item called Tuna Spanaki. A tuna filet is dusted with Greek spices, fresh cracked pepper, then seared and cooked to your specifications. It is served atop a bed of sauteed spinach and served with chili garlic aioli sauce.
Galactic Coast Brewing is the “Lone Star State’s newest brewery” and will make its debut at Bakkhus Taverna this month.
Commitment to Craft A quick tap audit of Bakkhus Taverna just prior to this issue hitting the press found five different Texas Craft Breweries on tap (Rahr, Karbach, No Label, Shiner & Saint Arnold) and two more via can/bottle (Real Ale and Southern Star). Of the 13 draft offerings at Bakkhus, 10 qualify as Craft Beer and we have heard rumors another noncraft tap could soon be replaced with a new Texas Craft Brewery.

“Bakkhus Taverna takes pride in our menu selections,” said Kouloumoundras. “We use the freshest ingredients available. If you have any special dietary concerns, we will make every effort to accommodate your requests. Please ask your server to provide suggestions during your visit to address these concerns.” Try a few of these ideas for a satisfying light summer meal at Bakkhus Taverna. For more information, visit www.bakkhustaverna.com. Don't forget to compliment your meal with a cold craft brew. Opa!

RESTAURANT NEWS & NOTES
Alvin’s Barbed Rose Steakhouse and Seafood Co. has relaunched as the Coastal Crossing Grill After dinner service on June 30, the Alvin Restaurant Group closed the doors of the renowned Barbed Rose Steakhouse and Seafood Company. Four days later the restaurant reopened with a new brand and concept, the Coastal Crossing Grill, a Gulf Coast Seafood house specializing in homemade, Gulf Coast fare from South of the Border to the Florida Keys. The Barbed Rose Steakhouse and Seafood Co. was created as part of Joe Schneider's master plan to revive downtown Alvin with world class food and entertainment venues for the local community that would also attract new faces to the Alvin area. “For the last two years, The Barbed Rose has done exactly what we created it to do,” said Joe Schneider, “put Alvin on the culinary map.” Executive Chef Jason Chaney added, “Not many restaurants grasp onto the ‘From Scratch’ philosophy as hard and unrelentingly as we did.” “The Barbed Rose cuisine created a strong following within the foodie community throughout the Houston Metropolitan area, and we are proud of all we accomplished in two short years,” said General Manager Pat Burford. The Barbed Rose closing is the end of one era for the Alvin Restaurant Group and the beginning of a new one with the introduction of Coastal Crossing Grill. The new menu offers a wide variety of specialties from the entire coast of the Gulf of Mexico. “We wanted to create a restaurant that offered the quality cuisine we are know for, but make it more affordable and more approachable,” said Schneider. Coastal Crossing Grill takes the best of the Barbed Rose and adds more Gulf Coast flair to it. Chaney added, “We are going to cook delicious food, using some of the same recipes that Houston-area food critics raved about, and present it in a more casual and laidback atmosphere.” “Metropolitan food critics have raved about our fish, seafood, Cajun and Creole dishes, so we decided to focus on what we do best,” said Schneider. Coastal Crossing Grill is a casual dining experience without all the trappings of a stuffy, special-occasion-only restaurant; the type of place you can enjoy a couple of times each week, and not be broke for the rest of the month. The Coastal Crossing Patio Bar (formerly the Burger Bar @ The Barbed Rose) is positioned to be a lively scene with tropical specialty drinks, bottled craft beers, live music and more. As Corporate Chef for the Alvin Restaurant Group, Chaney will retain culinary oversight of Coastal Crossing Grill. Veteran front of the house manager Cory Richardson also returns to run the dining room and front of the house. Desserts will be sourced from Norma’s Cakes and Cookies, the Alvin Restaurant Group’s in-house Bakery, and meats will be custom cut by in-house Artisan Butcher Jay Peek. Schneider summed it up by saying, “We are proud of our accomplishments as the Barbed Rose, and thank everyone for helping us realize our dreams for Alvin, and we look forward to kicking it up a notch with the Coastal Crossing Grill.”

RESTAURANT NEWS & NOTES: The cat’s out of the bag – or rather, in this case – the fish is out of the bag. Tookie’s is going coastal! Tookie’s Hamburgers – known for their quality food and service in a clean and quirky environment – is planning a second location and all new concept: Tookie’s Seafood. “We felt like that formula would work great for a seafood restaurant in Seabrook,” said General Manager Ali Velasco, “and the Tookie’s name is a perfect fit.” Velasco explained, ”We will feature fresh Texas Gulf Coast seafood prepared with a Latin touch –great seasonings and full of flavors.” He explained that a Mesquite grill will be at the center of their kitchen. Tookie’s seafood will be a laid-back type of eatery that welcomes people in shorts or business suits. Velasco will be overseeing the development of the concept and the construction as he did the reopening at Tookie’s Hamburgers. Restaurateur and Tookie’s owner Barry Terrell confirmed the early, projected opening date to be in the spring of 2013. In June, Tookie’s Hamburgers unveiled a new menu item: Moe Betta Beans – fried green beans. I know, it sounds questionable. But if you’re a fan of fried pickles, you will not be disappointed. I got a preview sample just as the June issue hit the streets (was not officially on the menu yet). I can’t wait taste them again. Also worth mentioning, more parking is now available for Tookie’s-goers across the street from the back patio at the corner of Cook Street and Second Street in Seabrook. Signature Bistro announced they have revitalized and recharged their menu. Always listening and adapting to their customers’ requests, they have gone through their offerings and replaced some of the higher priced items with more economical options. Owner Melissa Baccus said, “24 out of 34 dinner menu items are under $20!” New dinner menu items include Bistro Burger ($13: house-ground tenderloin topped with mushrooms, sauteed onions, jalapeños, provolone and goat cheese served with cajun potatoes); Brent's BBQ Pork Ribs ($18: fall-off-the-bone baby back pork ribs topped in a rich and spicy coffee BBQ sauce served with green beans and mashers); and Portobello Chicken Melt ($14: grilled chicken breast topped with provolone, their signature sun-dried tomato topping and dressed with their house-made pesto, all atop a portobello mushroom served with green beans). Don’t forget about $5 martini night (Wednesdays) and the very economical bar menu has menu items under $8: Stinky Feetza (mini chicken flatbread pizza with onions, peppers, olives, artichokes, provolone, goat cheese and pesto sauce); Tenderloin Sliders (two house-ground tenderloin patties on slider buns with lettuce, tomato and onion, served with shoe-string fries; Crab Cake Sliders (two mini crab cakes topped with creole seasoning on mini buns with remolade sauce, served with shoe-string fries); Shrimp and Grits (three shrimp grilled or blackened served on cheesy grits) and Stuffed Fungi (mushrooms stuffed with their famous crab stuffing and topped with brie cheese). And Moving in a New Direction
The Art Alliance Center of Clear Lake (TAACCL) is closing their big blue doors of its current location on NASA Parkway in Nassau Bay and is moving forward based on its new vision of Destination…Art! The move is bittersweet because of the longtime dedication and hard work of all the volunteers, staff, artists and directors, but the new vision will give TAACCL a fresh image that will expand its area of development and outreach. While art is an important part of the community, they need to “right-size” for a more efficient and appropriate venue for this new mission and program. The programming associated with this new vision, is under the direction of President of the Board Dion McInnis. He and the board made the decision in June to close the two-story gallery, but shared the enthusiasm and excitement on how this new vision will have an effect on all of Bay Area Houston. McInnis stated, “This is a great time to learn more, enlist to be a volunteer in the new direction, become a collaborating business or organiza-

TAACCL IS CLOSING THEIR DOORS tion with TAACCL as its programs will spread throughout the community and more”. The primary functions of TAACCL will be connection, education and celebration.
While the look for a permanent home continues, Founder Kay Burnett speaks at the TAACCL TAACCL’s new address will be 10th Anniversary Celebration in 2007 2437 Bay Area Blvd. #115 in Houston. Their number will remain the same: 281-335-7777. They will be holding a Moving Sale on Saturday, July 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the current location, 2000 NASA Parkway, Nassau Bay. This sale is open to the public. Items for sale from the gallery include office furniture, kitchen supplies and more. Track their development on their website www.taaccl.org and sign up for their newsletters as they keep the community informed. -----------------------------------------------------Personal note: I have had the privilege of covering TAACCL’s events for a decade for The SCENE Magazine since the founder, Kay Burnett was there. I have attended many exhibits, concerts, parties, classes, workshops and more at this wonderful location. The Gulf Coast Film Festival (that I am associated with) has hosted the celebrities meet-and-greets at TAACCL. My family and I have enjoyed music on Sunday afternoons from the best jazz musicians around behind those big blue doors. I have met so many people through this non-profit organization, the staff, the volunteers, and all the artists who I know and have called my friends. I get a little melancholy when I think that I turned my grandkids on to the arts presented by TAACCL with their Saturday art camps that I enjoyed viewing as well as reporting. Farpoint Theatre had a two-week production at TAACCL, which was a first, that I played a fun character in “On the Verge” (that will always be memorable) and how the two story gallery was transformed into an amazing theatre. I always would get a little chill, when I played their big black grand piano, because of the grandiose feeling it gave, reminiscent of a major concert venue. There were art festivals, open mics, poetry readings and acting classes that were always a must to attend. The dedications of the staff to create the many children’s programs were also incredible. Movie nights with wine were fun, too. The folks at TAACCL always knew how to host an opening reception over a dozen times a year. I could go on how this wonderful gift of art to our community has affected this Clear Lake area and my life personally. I know it was not easy to make this decision, but under the guidance of Dion and their incredible folks, it will be another new exciting venture in the arts that we will all enjoy and anticipate. I encourage everyone to donate or participate in some way to help keep the arts alive in our community. I wish them the very best of luck and thanks for the memories! - Domino Taylor

Featured Artist: S.J. Stout
SC
Clear Lake’s most prolific Artist ?
By Kelley Dawson
S.J. Stout, as his surname would imply, has made a substantial mark in the local art and advertising worlds. He is one of Clear Lake’s most prolific artists. His infamous hand-painted sign art and caricatures are highly recognizable all around the Bay Area. Stout’s history is as colorful and diverse as his art mediums and his personality is as amusing as his caricatures. In fact, his sense of humor becomes almost tangible in the caricature faces and cartoons he creates. Stout captures the essence of his varied subjects using oils, wood, bronze, ceramics, and fiber glass. Stout grew up in Arkansas where his father, a retired World War II pilot, continued to fly planes and also worked as sign painter. Stout must have acquired some of his father’s artistic talent. Stout was just 7 years old when he won his first art contest for the town rodeo. Not only was he awarded first place, Stout received rodeo tickets, a pair of cowboy boots, and shook the hand of the legendary singing-cowboy, Gene Autry. Stout said he continued to excel in art through his high school years. He joked, “I made A’s in art and C’s in everything else.” Stout finished high school locally in Webster and won several more art contests. After high school, Stout joined the Marines and worked sea duty aboard the USS Lexington. He often painted art on the ship to keep up morale. Stout stated that the captain liked his work so much he requested murals. After serving on the ship, Stout relocated to Camp Pendleton in California. There, he trained horses for the Marine Corp. It was something Stout said

he had “always wanted to try.” Stout later joined his father in League City to assist him with the sign painting business. But, Stout wasn’t quite ready to settle down into his father’s business. He joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. Stout painted many murals in Munich. He also entered another art contest for the European Armed Forces through the United States Armed Forces official newspaper, Stars and Stripes. Stout earned first prize for his cartoon depiction of a German soldier giving an American GI his first drink of Steinhauser beer. “The face tells the story,” Stout described with a wink. He added that it wasn’t long before he received a phone call from Stars and Stripes asking him to “come work for us.” Stout exclaimed, “Damn right!” Stout began working in the newspaper’s art department. He recalled it was a daily paper so he learned to create cartoons very fast. Stout then transferred to work on the newspaper and magazine in Fort Hood. After years in the newspaper business, Stout returned to sign painting in the Bay Area. He studied Western art and Texas history. He created bust collections from Civil War times and of famous Texas history figures such as Sam Houston. Stout created his busts and figures from bronze or fiber glass. Additionally, he uses a chainsaw to design wooden statues. Stout even built life-size bronze sculptures for the town of Goliad and for the Butler Longhorn Museum. Stout also designed the statue of Nolan Ryan in Alvin. Stout proudly spoke about one of his favorite creations which was a 40-foot working replica of the Huntley submarine. Currently, Stout said he is enjoying painting signs and ad art. He admits he does miss hand painting boat names which have mostly gone all to vinyl these days. Stout said he has always wanted to paint the name “Passing Wind” on a local sail boat. (Any takers?) Visit the El Lago Coffee Company to view Stout’s art work or contact S.J. Stout at 713-408-0498.

Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence
of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

GALVESTON AT A GLANCE By Sue Mayfield Geiger It would be impossible to give you the unabridged version of what to do and see on this legendary island full of Indian lore, shipwrecks, and pirates. The storm of 1900 may have taken away its prosperity status, but the comebacks since then have been 10-fold with Galveston’s 27 miles of coastline continually luring visitors by the thousands to soak up the history, enjoy the Gulf breezes, and get away from the ordinary. Whether you are a died-in-the-wool beach bum or sophisticated mainland dweller, it is hard to resist the call of the sea. Uptown/Downtown: Either way you say it, most call it The Strand and 99% of all visitors make their way to this historical section of the island thanks largely in part to Mr. George Mitchell and the Galveston Historical Foundation. The Strand got a major facelift in the early 1970s and today’s 19th Century commercial buildings house a mix of businesses, trendy shops and residences. Atelier: Many of these dot the area, and the best way to find them is with a good pair of tennis shoes. Between the streets of The Strand, Postoffice, 25th and 20th, walk these blocks and pop into various art galleries to view the works of island artists. Every six weeks, ArtWalk occurs—rain or shine—
for you to peruse galleries, nibble cheese and sip wine. (Still wondering? Atelier is French for “artist workshop”.) Cuisine & Sweet Tooth: “Go where the food is”—That said, you won’t be hard pressed to find good eats. From pizza to paella, The Strand area offers gumbo, sushi, burgers, a zillion seafood choices and lots more. For breakfast with atmosphere, try Star Drug Store (galvestonstardrug.com) or the Original Mexican Café (1401 Market; weekends only). For lunch and a healthy dose of freshness, drop by eatcetera (eatcetera.net) for daily gourmet specials. Dinnertime depends on your mood and taste buds, but Fisherman’s Wharf has an extensive selection of everything, even for those who don’t eat shellfish (fishermanswharfgalveston.com). Save room for ice cream at LaKing’s (lakingsconfectionery.com). Note: Nonno Tony’s World Kitchen at Pier 21 will be opening by summer’s end. - Continued on Next Page

Culture: Galveston’s Commission for the Arts has submitted an application requesting the State of Texas to designate Galveston’s downtown area as an official cultural district. This will broaden and strengthen Galveston’s tourism base and provide new opportunities for the island’s downtown area. In the meantime, be sure and stop by the Railroad Museum, visit the tall ship Elissa, Bishop’s Palace and Moody Mansion (see reference guide).

Couture & Trinkets: Bikinis, flip-flops, surfing gear, Hawaiian shirts, mermaids, formal wear – it’s all right here – and a good place to start is Gracie (2228 Strand). End up at Colonel Bubbie’s (colbubbie.com), a genuine government surplus store. Showtime: Don’t miss The Grand 1894 Opera House, if only to take a tour of this opulent, velvety theatre featuring top-notch entertainment throughout the year (thegrand.com). For live music, Yaga’s is always jammin’ (yagaspresents.com) with rock, roll and a lot of soul. Seawall Area: Bike it, jog it, skate it, segway it – it’s seven miles long and 17 feet high with fishing piers, souvenirs shops, and beaches galore. Play volleyball, go surfing, walk the dog, build a sandcastle, or just do nothing. Beachy Stuff: East Beach is the hippest place to be and party down, but the newest talk of the town is definitely the Pleasure Pier (pleasurepier.com). Let the Gulf Glider swing you 22 ft. in the air and then get up the nerve to board the Iron Shark Rollercoaster, but save a bit of bravery for the Pirate’s Plunge. (Many tame rides are available for the kiddies.) Don’t leave the seawall area without visiting Murdoch’s (2215 Seawall). If you can’t find a seashell here, you won’t find it anywhere. Good Eats: So many good spots, but not enough space to include them all, so will have to choose the one spot that seems to get the most votes – The Spot – which has grown over the years to include four more venues and you can find them all at www.islandfamous.com. Incredible food, cold beer and homemade desserts. Drink Up: The Beach Hut is the only bar right on the beach. Located at 8th and Seawall, they are biker friendly with live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Float, Captain Jack’s, The Beach House Woody’s are others that offer the tropical fun you’re looking for. Happy Hour specials, live
music, fun in the sun, and breezy evenings (galveston.com/beachbars). Fun & Family: Don’t miss the Lone Star Flight Museum full of vintage aircraft and war planes. Experience the thrill of taking a ride in one! Also, Moody Gardens with its Rainforest Pyramid, Aquarium, and 3-D Theater sits right next to the Schlitterbahn Waterpark. Cocktails & Good Vibrations: Long established O'Malley's Stage Door Pub (523 24th), regulars and tourists alike gather here for brewskis and killer Frito Pie. Murphy’s Irish Pub (213 22nd) is laid back and serves up super good pub food. For a pre-theatre martini, saunter into Rudy & Pacos (rudyandpaco.com) or for a crafty beer education, check out Brews Brothers Brew Pub (2404 Strand) for some totally wicked stout. OFF THE BEATEN PATH Boliver: Take 20 minutes out of your life and catch the Boliver Ferry at dusk to watch the sun set, birdlife and dolphins. This is a good, relaxing way to wind down, get in touch with nature and best of all – it’s free! Café Michael Burger: Always packed; always awesome. Worth the extra few miles: 11150 Termini-San Luis Pass Rd. Overnight Suggestions: From five-star hotels to camping on the shoreline, there are hundreds of choices. Beachfront rentals, condo rentals, B&Bs and time shares—the choices are endless. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy the century-old Hotel Galvez or the historic Tremont House with its nifty birdcage elevators. The nautical Harbor House at Pier 21 is perfect for ship gazing. Club Ten Guest Rooms at the San Luis Resort are plush and pricey, but standard guest rooms offer the same magnificent Gulf views. For as little as $15 a night, you can get a similar view (if you don’t mind a little sand in your S’mores) and pitch a tent at Galveston Island State Park. Visit or call the Galveston Island Visitor Center at 2328 Broadway or 888-425-4753 for more info.

2012 Texas Outlaw Challenge
A MORNING AT THE RACES The SCENE is Galveston Bay on a sunny Friday morning. I’m a guest of Ron Culbreath and Tammy Mazoch aboard their yacht, Bucket List, which is serving as an official patrol boat and the VIP boat for the “Extreme Shoot-out Runs” of last month’s Texas Outlaw Challenge. These shoot out runs are for 100-mph-plus boats that one-by-one take to the long, straight course that stretches from south Kemah to Bayshore Park in San Leon. The boats are built for speed and look the part to be sure. The goal is simple, go as fast as possible in an attempt to reach the top speed of the day. It is basically drag racing on the water, only one boat at a time with the boat speeds logged into the team's GPS. I later learned that despite less-than-optimum conditions (water was a little rough), the winner of the day topped 160 mph receiving the Big Gun Shootout Award. The event’s signature six-shooter gunslinger trophies were awarded in a number of classes. It was truly an awesome spectacle and great time on the water. Having great hosts definitely didn’t hurt. In just five years, The Texas Outlaw Challenge has turned into a premier high-performance boating destination offering an extended weekend full of poker runs, parties, million-dollar boat displays, dinners, live entertainment and bikini contests and attracting guests and boats from all over the country. - John Ennis

LAKEWOOD’S BAY CUP II SLATED FOR AUGUST 11 Lakewood Yacht Club Race Committee Chairman Gerhard Wittich has announced that the 2012 Bay Cup II will be held on Sat., Aug. 11. This is the second in a series where Bay Cup I was held last March. Wittich explained that there will be overall class winners for the Bay Cup Series which will be presented at the awards ceremony on the night of Aug. 11 in Lakewood Yacht Club’s lounge. The race is open to the public with a $70 registration fee. Racers can register on line at Lakewood’s website: www.lakewoodyachtclub.com under the racing button. “Bay Cup II will feature long distance racing in Galveston and Trinity Bays,” related Wittich, “with multiple legs for a total of about 5 – 25 nautical miles, depending upon wind conditions. This should be a navigational challenge for the racers as well.” Classes include PHRF Spinnaker, PHRF Non-Spinnaker, Cruising Spinnaker, Classic Canvas, Multihull, SOS, and others. There will be a Sat. night pool party with dinner and entertainment. The awards that night will be for the winners of Bay Cup II as well as the 2012 Bay Cup Series. Wittich wanted to thank the sponsors of Bay Cup II: Sea Lake Yacht Sales and Bay Access, Inc., which is a not-for-profit organization fostering amateur sailing. Racers are encouraged to attend the Bay Cup II Skippers meeting which will be held at Lakewood Yacht Club’s ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook on Friday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Basic Boating Class & Certification: July 14 Galveston Bay Sail & Power Squadron’s one-day basic boating class, including Texas Parks and Wildlife certification, will be held Saturday, July 14 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Designed for ages 12 and above, this class, “America’s Boating Course,” covers a wide range of topics such as numerous safety matters, general information about many types of boats, rules and regulations, right-of-way issues, and tying commonly used marine knots. Texas Parks and Wildlife recommends a basic boating course for all boat operators and requires such a course for anyone born on or after September 1, 1993, who operates a motorized vessel over 15 horsepower or a windblown vessel over 14 feet long. Cost is $60 for the course, textbook, materials, and lunch. This course makes a great Father’s Day gift, especially if the whole family attends, and family discounts are available. First-time participants in the ABC class are eligible to apply for six months of free membership. Contact Jim Hammond 832-385-1357 or Pam Sanders 713-9628878 for more information.

Since March 2010, the boutique has carried swimwear for men, women, and children. The styles include everything from bikinis, onepieces, tankinis, board shorts, and more. All women’s top sizes from ADD-E, and specialty sizes up to G. Suit sizes range from X-Small to XX-Large. Finding the right fit just became easier since all swimwear is sold as separates. JuJu’s Beachwear also offers custom competition suits and they are stunning. After the client picks the perfect fabric and rhinestone accents, DeBusk will tailor make the suit typically over a two-week period. If you enter into a contest at the last minute, do not worry. “Often times, a first time contestant will come in and purchase a suit that day to win first place in a completion that night,” said DeBusk. The store is a sponsor for a lot of organizations and charities including Miss Kemah, Miss Houston, Miss Bay Area, and each corresponding “Teen” contest, the Texas Outlaw Challenge and all local boating events, as well as many fitness competitions. Loose Notes: Continued from Page 48 ON KEEPING IT COOL - Okay, so some of us tend to fade in the heat after awhile. Never fear ’cuz Kevin and the team at Cullen’s Live keep their music cooking, and the AC is set low. This month, the area’s longest running Beatle tribute band, The Fab 5, had the place twisting and shouting the night away – which is always a good thing. The other coolest hang out this summer has got to be the Cock-eyed Seagull. We caught Big Tip Todd there for the first time. We didn’t put them on the New Band Alert list earlier, and, thus, do so here. These guys don’t just have it down musically, but do so with a flair and social conscience, too. Somehow, the music’s simply better when the latter two gets folded in. Fab 5 @ Cullen’s Ever notice?

Texas Beer Revolution • Continued This has left those dominating the market, Big Beer Water, with an advantage they don't deserve but spend millions in campaign contributions to maintain. In a future installment of this series, we will take a closer look at issues with current TABC laws, the recent victorious lawsuit by the new Austin brewery Jester King against TABC, the challenges that remain within the state and the Open The Taps grassroots organization of craft beer consumers and the changes they are fighting for. But this month, we will focus on a more positive topic, the explosion of new craft breweries that have opened in Texas and the impact they are already making locally, statewide and nationally. As you probably noticed on the previous page, the last year and a half has been an active one for the state’s brewing scene. Austin is quickly becoming one of the nation’s top beer cities with unprecedented growth. And not only are these new breweries opening and serving the Austin community, but making a name
for themselves nationally as well. Austin Beer Works, which opened last year, took home a 2011 Great American Beer Festival silver medal in the English-style summer ale category for their Peacemaker Extra Pale Ale just five months after opening. Another new Austin brewery, Hops & Grain Brewing, has continued the momentum landing a gold for its Alt-eration in the German-style brown ale/Dusseldorf-style altbier category at the World Beer Cup. A good example of the creativity new Texas breweries are bringing to the table is the Oatmeal Pale Ale (OPA) from San Antonio’s Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling. It is described as “a central Texas take on the classic American Pale Ale” and is both as unique and delicious as they come. So promising with potential is the Houston Craft Beer market that prolific brewmaster and brewery consultant Eric Warner (who was hired to consult on the construction of Houston’s new Karbach Brewing) decided instead to join the company full-time leaving his post at Flying Dog Brewing and moved his family to Texas. Stay tuned for more on the Texas Beer Revolution. Cheers!
Saint Arnold Brewing Co. • Continued At that time, Saint Arnold was coming off 30 percent growth (17,811 barrels in 2007) and put their brewhouse in action around the clock to finish 2008 up another 28% (22,749 barrels). Despite outgrowing the brewery, Saint Arnold managed 13% growth (25,710) in 2009, its final year at the original brewery. As reported in The SCENE at the time, Saint Arnold purchased and transformed an abandoned Houston Independent School District food distribution headquarters into the current brewery, installing a huge brewhouse shipped from a Bavarian brewery that had been brewing since 1295. The new brewery (referred to as the newery prior to and during the move) brought greatly increased brewing capacity, allowing Saint Arnold to surpass 40,000 barrels (40,416) for 29 percent growth in 2011. Good enough for 43rd on the list of Top 50 American Craft Brewing Companies. The move also gave Saint Arnold the perfect venue allowing for more tours in a larger, historic and air-conditioned brewery. Despite all the recent success, Saint Arnold only continues to grow and raise the bar. It has expanded its market now selling into Louisiana and expanded its product line launching a number of highly-regarded new beers in the last 12 months including three that medaled in the World Beer Cup competition. (Pumpkinator: Silver in “field or pumpkin beer category;” Endeavour Imperial IPA: Silver in the “imperial India pale ale category;” and Santo: bronze in the “American-style dark lager” category.) So even with added competition from new craft breweries, it is obvious that no one will be forgetting about Texas’ First Craft Brewery if Wagner has anything to do with it.

Jackie’s Brickhouse
ON REINVENTION Coaches will always say it’s a good idea to hang on to what works. And a Mambo Jazz King show never fails. Not many Houston metroplex venues can readily host Mambo’s team but Jackie’s Brickhouse does Mambo Jazz Kings @ so with ease. Aside from Jackie’s Brickhouse the tried and true, we’ve been enjoying the new talent Jackie’s has been bringing in, and this month, it was Boot Jam with Mandi Powell, Susan Hickman and Presley Lewis taking turns on the indoor stage. It was a great way to spend a hot Saturday afternoon. Perhaps best of all, however, this month, is Jackie’s Monday Steak Night and Open Mic. We knew the cooks at Open Mic @ the Brickhouse were Jackie’s Brick- capable of some serihouse ously fine culinary cuisine, and what they do with a steak is incredible. May we recommend, too, the side of shrimp and stuffing all the way? The Open Mic – hosted by Lynn Raggio, Myrna Sanders, and Cisco Ruiz – is first rate, too, with a good mix of musicians stopping in for the evening. Monday Night Football is a ways away. In the mean time, we’ve got Jackie’s Brickhouse’s Steak Night and Open Mic. Make this a regular evening on your Monday night schedule. ON CONSISTENCY Which is Scout Bar and their steady lineup of local, national and international touring acts. Summer vacations caused some of us to miss the sweet spot of last month’s lineup, but we did catch Brett Cardiff at his last show at Scout Bar with IDR. Over the months catching Brett’s ever-steady nitty-gritty work on the bass hasn’t gone unno-
ticed - For many to play at such a level on a single night would be pretty cool but to see his intensity level each and every night is truly remarkable. If John Madden were to have an All American Team of Intense Bass Players, Brett would be on that team. Cheers! - Continued on Page38

the scene’s martini madness RED – “And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there…” Order a Cranberry martini and you will rave all “O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!” The ingredients are Customer’s Choice vodka, mixed with Grenadine's blood-red, strong, made from pomegranates syrup, cranberry juice, and a cherry garnish. WHITE – “From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam…” This martini symbolizes the awesome “God bless America, my home, sweet home.” A Vodka Classic martini is technically clear in color (full disclosure) and made with Absolut vodka at full strength with a lemon twist garnish. You know the big bright white fireworks? Yeah, it’s kind of like that… BLUE - May the BLUE martini remind you of “O beautiful for spacious skies” and “From sea to shining sea.” Cheers to America, The Beautiful! Blue Curacao orange flavored liqueur adds a vibrant blue color to an original recipe martini giving the beverage an orange flavor. An independent cherry in the bottom of the glass and a non-partisan lemon for a garnish gets the winning vote!

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 51 THE TEST OF TIME - Old Town League City was where it happened in a good old fashion way with a concert in the park and regional touring group, The Kurland Kurland Street Street Band in the Band @ League City gazebo. Originally made up of musicians who worked for HL&P in 1985, these professionals have since been dispersed as is typical in modern corporate America. Yet as musicians, they’ve stuck together keeping big band swing alive covering the era of the 1920s through some of today’s new artists for all us young at heart. Reckoning this through, the Kurland Street Band and their music truly passes the test of time. Put them on your watch list.
Briefcase of Blues @ Moody Gardens
THE HEAT IS ON - One of the finest North American tribute bands stopped by the Moody Gardens, and we were there. Briefcase Full Of Blues was their name, and these cats gave forth the finest rendition of the infamous American tradition, The Blues Brothers – handcuffs and all! Joining the high-energy traveling entourage were our very own Andy Upchurch, Fred Linton, David Watson, and Paul Chapman (keys, sax, bone and sound). On this evening, the beach was cooking the music was even hotter. *THIS* is a group this area deserves to see more often!
NEW BAND ALERT and CONNECTING THE DOTSJoe Palmero (from Six Car Pileup) doesn’t often send us event invites, so when he does, we take notice. And boy, does his new group, Breakfast At Tiffany’s, score a mention on our watch list. We caught this group at Dempsey’s – a place never afraid to try something new – pulled it off well. It’s no secret people here like ’80s Madigan @ Dempsey’s dance bands, and I suspect we’ll see more of these folks in the months ahead. This group had a bright sharp cadence elevating the evening’s edge nicely – and with Dale on the mixing board – was sonically precise to the nines! (That's a rare score folks!) Check ’em out! While we’re with Dempsey’s, we dropped in on the Wells Alliance Benefit (thewellsalliance.bbnow.org) who has been doing good things for several years running. We were able to catch After Party and Madigan After Party @ Dempsey’s that day. By my informal accounting, Madigan is amongst the leaders appearing at charity events throughout the year. Don’t forget their rocking, highenergy shows, and you can connect the dots yourself... - Continued on Page 44

In July, you will be able to get out and dance to The Reds, Bad Boyfriend, The Pub Affair, Video Stars, and many more! Maybe you are a little unsure about your dance moves? That’s ok, too. Cullen’s LIVE is presenting the “Geeks who Drink” pub trivia challenge. If you think it’s just trivia, then think again. (Ask for details.) As you are shaking your groove thing on the dance floor, you can't help but look up at the huge opening in the ceiling revealing a second floor. A discreet staircase and elevator are nestled over to the side taking party-goers to the upstairs lounge. Its cool and swanky furnishings are home to a DJ that spins various music genres, and it doesn't hurt that there is an additional bar upstairs.

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
The Miami Heat are this year’s NBA champions; the dog days of summer are around the corner; and we cooled off by taking our music-loving ears to the water. Last month, we spent time with the Yachty Gras folks and the Shuttlebration Celebration armada. The Yachty Gras group is busy planning a new and exciting season, and we look forward to more good times ahead. Also, we hung out with another popular annual event, the Texas Outlaw Challenge. These amazing creations make the most impressive music to the Cerebelus @ ears when screaming Mainly Drinks across the water. In the months ahead, we’ve prime time sailboat racing to enjoy and throughout it all, the live music remains alive and well. Let’s run through the month! ON THE WATER - Out on Galveston Bay at Noah’s Ark, Casey Bennett’s put together a fun new band calling themselves the Black Light Mannequins with plenty of the neon painted models on hand, custom vintage hippie lighting, and tie-dye galore. Musically, these guys moved seamlessly from one song to the next touching the ’60s and ’70s rock spectrum (rockabilly, classic, southern, Hendrix electric) you’d play on a ’70s crosscountry road trip. Out on the water at Outriggers, we decompressed in the cool Kemah Channel breeze with buckets of iced beer, great chow for everybody and Southbound on the stage. These guys have been weaving some new originals into their nonstop playlist and have a remarkable way of setting the atmosphere to “beach quality”-perfect everywhere they play. Heads up: August heat in Houston can be maddening for which we recommend getting away with Southbound on their five-day trip to Cozumel leaving August 3. Check out the itinerary. This is

FOLLOW UP- A couple months ago, we fell in love with a new stop, Mainly Drinks in LaPorte, and knew a follow up was in order. Turns out, we had it right as the place was packed for dinner with Cerebelus (Rachel Naomi Walker and Armando Vazquez) filling the air with soulful R&B bent towards a Rock/Pop sound. Duets are amongst our favorite groups where performances tend towards tight eclectic. Enjoy Cerebelus at Mainly Drinks, Signature Bistro and other fine locations on the SCENE. This month, we also followed up Black Light Mannequins @ Jackie B’s outdoor stage catching the Michael Stephens duet along Noah’s Ark with Wood & Wind. Bobbie and Steve Revak have been steadily adding a whole bunch of new songs to their playlist. The eclectic ones you rarely hear performed locally live. Special guest included radio personality Lee Jolly on the bass. Musically, both evenings scored two thumbs up. Cheers! Wood ‘n Wind @ Jackie B’s

IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE A.W.O.L. AT CABO! By Rhonda Meredith
and queso. This is a recipe that seafood lovers will appreciate! An 8ounce Ahi Tuna is seared and blackened on a hot skillet in a lime butter sauce and served rare for the best flavor. Pair the entree with a salad and your choice of baked potato, fries, onion rings or grilled asparagus.
The summertime party season is in full swing at Cabo! Cabo is a premier place to unwind, let loose, and just have a good time any day of the week. That’s why the term “A.W.O.L.” (After Work On the Lake) has become more than a battle cry. A.W.O.L. has become the much appreciated transition from work to play. The friendly crowd that assembles at Cabo knows how to have some fun! The waterfront venue is located in the heart of Seabrook at the intersection of Nasa Road 1 and Lakeside Drive. Cabo is spacious and has numerous amenities to keep you entertained. There is something for everyone, such as pool tables, ping pong table, darts, electronic games, jumbo-sized Jenga blocks, and a shuffleboard table.
The Sunset Burger is made from 100% Angus beef and topped with a fried egg, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and a side BBQ sauce. It comes with fries, onion rings, or chips and the option of lettuce, tomatoes, and onion.
But Cabo is more than just fun and games. Cabo is happy, and it shows! The generous “Happy Hour” specials are more than pleasing. Some examples of nightly drink specials are $2 drafts, $1.50 wells, $2 Jagers, and $2 domestics. Try the signature “CABO-tini.” The rich and intense flavor of raspberry vodka is fused with the fresh and fruity character of peach vodka and blended with orange liqueur for a very potent start to a cool looking drink potion. Yum! The drink specials go hand in hand with the tasty kitchen deals. On Wednesday nights, Cabo offers $5 burgers. Then on Thursdays, it’s “Steak Night” with your choice of a $10 rib-eye, $12 filet, or $9 pork chop. Inspired by Head Chef Matt Williams are Cabo’s newest menu items: Green Chile Pulled Pork Tacos, Blackened Ahi Tuna, and the Sunset Burger. The savory and satisfying Green Chile Pork Tacos are made of stewed prime pork, green chile sauce, queso fresco, onion, and cilantro. It is complimented with a side of chips

The atmosphere immediately draws you into camaraderie with other like-minded folks. It feels so good to be A.W.O.L.! Cabo has live entertainment seven days a week. After dinner, hang out until one of the area’s top bands begins to perform live on the ample stage. On Monday nights, Mama Tried takes the stage with an open mic night offered between sets. Big Richard is live every Tuesday night and Obsolete August each Thursday. Musical duos and trios, like Cassette Tape, are rotated on Wednesday nights. To complete the entertainment line-up, Cabo books DJs with awesome turntable skills who will take you back to the old school tunes and forward with progressive mixes.

FAMILY FORCE 5 to Krunk-Rock the Kemah Boardwalk Tuesday, July 31 By Rhonda Meredith On July 31, as part of the Boomin' by the Bay Concert Series brought to you by KSBJ, Family Force 5 (FF5) will be “krunk-rocking” the Kemah Boardwalk with their unique blend of southern-fried dance music. Solomon "Soul Glow Activatur" Olds, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of Family Force 5 (Tooth & Nail Records) spoke with The SCENE Magazine about their new records, zombies, and coming to Kemah. Last October, the band released a full-length album called “III” and in May, they followed up with an EP titled “III.V.” Olds said, “Fans do not want to wait years to hear a band’s new music. We want to give them fresh music as we record it.” The philosophy has been successful. Two singles from “III” have emerged from the rest of the album’s songs. “Wobble” is a parody to a certain current party song bearing the same name. “Paycheck” is a personal favorite that is a bit slower and more serious song with lyrics reflecting the state of those trying to work and survive. On “III.V,” the band introduced three new songs and added three acoustic versions of past fan favorites. The EP is full of standout tunes. “Kountry Gentlemen,” “Superhero,” and “Zombie” are most notable.

FF5 has never performed at the Kemah Boardwalk before, but are looking forward to the date. At the beginning of July, they were in the DFW area filming a video for the “Cray Song.” Olds says the band’s favorite thing to do is be creative and performing for their fans. FF5 also makes it a point to be accessible to all whether through social media or after a concert. Family Force 5 hails from Georgia and is made up of brothers Jacob, Joshua, and Solomon Olds, and “brothers-from-other-mothers” Nathan Currin, and Derek Mount.
