BIKINI WARS • SUMMER IS SIZZLING AT SCOUT BAR By Rhonda Meredith For the past eight years, Scout Bar has rocked the Bay Area with many of the best and brightest local and regional musical talent as well as major national and international touring acts. And now, they are turning up the summertime sizzle to hot, hot, HOT! Honestly, the outdoor temperature is just no match for ladies competing in Scout Bar’s Bikini Wars. The competition began in July and will continue to be held every Thursday night in August.

SEMI FINALS: August 2, 9, 16 & 23 FINALS on August 30

The weekly winners are selected by a panel of judges made up of local personalities and sponsors. The top three out of up to 10 contestants will win $600 cash prize money. Also, the top two ladies will advance to the finals on August 30 in hopes of winning the coveted “Ms. Scout Bar” title along with other prizes. To participate, a contestant must be at least 18 years-old, and compete wearing “club dress” and then “bikini attire.” Please contact Ryan McGuire at ryan@scoutbar.com to enter or for information regarding available corporate sponsorships. Local band Fal Skye performs before, in between, and after the competition rounds. A hot night needs cool drink specials, so Scout Bar offers a "$2 MeXXican beer special," $2 Big Ass Beer, and well drink specials all night. No cover for 21 and up. Scout Bar is a multivenue rock/dance club that features a wide variety of cover bands, local, regional, and national musical artists. On Sunday nights, Scout Bar showcases local and state-wide talent as it hosts The Texas Buzz Show. Bands wanting to perform at Scout Bar can submit their interest at ScoutBar.com (click on booking). Check out an energy-fueled concert powered by more than 20,000 watts of audio in a comfortable atmosphere. In August, Scout Bar will feature national acts Hank3, Parabelle, and Rehab. Perhaps our hottest and busiest month of the year! July was on the SCENE, and it makes sense with Summer Olympics getting kicked off. As usual, we scored topquality food, fun and entertainment last month off each and every page of The SCENE. No wonder our magazines fly off the racks – it's where readers get the run down on the low down. Here’s some of what went down:

LAST MONTH AT PRESS TIME - We hung out at one of Jim Shortt’s favorite annual stops, the Baytown's Bicentennial Park 4th of July celebration. This was my first time to make it and wondering what took so long. Mark Sandberg of Texas Sounds Entertainment (located here in Clear Lake) consistently provides quality national and local entertainment and this year, we enjoyed local soloist Ryan Guidry and the Marshall Tucker Band, both playing music that has withstood the test of time. Lots of readers have this free annual event on their calendars. Mark it on yours! JUST A REEF AWAY Kelly McGuire lovers dropped anchor at T-Bone Tom’s for a nice surprise. Marshall Tucker Band @ We’ve noticed Kelly hasn't Baytown 4th of July been around much and found on www.redfishisland.com he’s often busy across the continent these days – Good for North America! Do score yourself a copy of Kelly’s latest CD, King of the Island. It’s a comprehensive compilation on who he is, and what he’s about, includes tales of adventures, recognition of his seaworthy female fans, and fitting tributes to family. This CD is totally there with good mix and mastering. Put this one on your list to get!

Marshall Tucker Band @ Baytown 4th of July

NEW STOP ON THE BEAT - Is Latitudes in San Leon. We first noticed these folks at the Clear Lake Crawfish Festival where they scored all of my People’s Choice votes for gumbo. Get the drift? The kitchen staff scored an “Overthe-Top” mention on our red snapper (with seafood scampi topping) and their fish taco basket. I can’t wait to try the rest of their menu. Jada Mitchell and the entire Latitudes staff is one fine-running team scoring a "Great Service" mention to go along with their kitchen’s eats. This entire team has fun and enjoys taking care of customers, something that can not be faked. Musically, patrons enjoyed an evening of Guilty By Association (GBA). This was our first time seeing this group, and hand it to a band that can play after dinner Jimi Hendrix and Grateful Dead dance music. Dig it? We got a peek at the month’s music lineup, and it’s clear these folks know good music with the like of Andy and The Dreamsicles, Scott McGill, Funksion, and others on the schedule. Without fail, Bradshaw (with his Cisco looper pedal) takes his one-person band into outer space. Jeremy Bradshaw is an act we can see all around the greater Houston Metroplex. Book him!

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 55 FOLLOW UP Elevate the Son @ TAACL Last December, we gave a “Best Sound Of The Month” to Josh and Jeremy at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack and ran into them with their full band, Elevate the Son at the The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake art show and moving sale. This time around, we sampled their uplifting playlist often heard around Baytown and took home a demo mix of a couple originals. We’re looking forward hearing how the final mix and mastering turns out. Last month, you read in The SCENE how TAACCL is undergoing reinvention (something we all need to do from time to time). We caught up with Dion McInnis and like TAACL’s

BERT’S BACK - We saw Bert Wills at Zone 504 in Kemah and Katie’s in Bacliff. This troubadour is a foundation around the music SCENE for decades with uncountable album appearances. We finally got a chance to enjoy his wit and down-to-earth talent along with the standing room turnout at Katie’s. Not too many local venues have fans showing up hours before the show. Scout Bar is one of them – and so is Katie’s when Bert comes to play. Makes sense.... POINT OF DEPARTURES - Cabo, it seems, is THE gathering place before bands embark on adventures and voyages. Last summer, The Crew disembarked on their coastal tour of Texas from Cabo immediately following their kick-off concert. And now last month, Southbound had a farewell bon voyage appearance as they headed to Cozumel for their sold-out resort performances. Following The Crew’s tour, came a book. is a “come-as-you-are bar” located in the heart of Seabrook at NASA Road 1 and Highway 146 – the busiest intersection in the State of Texas.

The venue’s live music stylings are as diverse as the people who come to enjoy an evening out at Fatty's. They have showcased many local rock and roll cover bands, some rock-a-billy, a little new age rock, a lot of southern rock, and country. The bands we have had so far cover popular music and play some original pieces of their own. Local talent that has performed recently is Madigan, Abraham's Tree, The Blacklight Mannequins, Rainchild, Zach Tate Band, Johnny Falstaff, The Dennis Price Band, JJ Dynomite, and acoustic bands like Southbound and Dave Owens. Local favorites Madigan and Abraham’s Tree are back at Fatty’s in August along with Modern Art. Madigan returns to Fatty’s: Saturday, August 25

Fatty's offers a fun, friendly, comfortable, and inviting atmosphere any night of the week. Mustache Karaoke is held Tuesday nights with a host fresh from Branson, Missouri. This is something new, so everyone is welcome to roll on up to Fatty's to enjoy some karaoke fun.

On Thursday nights, come join the fun at Fatty’s Open Mic and talent night giving local musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents. Fatty’s enjoyed having Dayna Steele, of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, as a guest for the open mic night recently to see the first public appearance of a new band in the area, The Jared Zolli band. Fatty's is working on hosting a battle of the bands during their open mic and talent night which management promises to be “fun and interesting.” The acoustics are fantastic at Fatty’s. The venue also offers a nice-sized raised stage in addition to some lighting. Bands wishing to book a gig at Fatty's should go in any early afternoon to speak to management. Zach Tate of the Zach Tate Band says this about Fatty’s, “Management is very cool to work with. They encourage and support local original music! Fatty’s has good live music sensibility, understands the importance of providing a good stage and working atmosphere for a band to play while still managing to keep the place at a listenable volume for customers.” Dustin Condon of Rainchild says his band has a lot of fun when performing at the venue and the Fatty’s crowd is great fun. Most of the weekend entertainment starts around 9 p.m. and a jukebox is available in between the live music. Fatty’s has both indoor and outdoor seating. All live music can be enjoyed with fabulous drink specials, too.

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 51 COOL OLYMPICS Hourglass @ HANGOUTS - Would Cock-Eyed be places where the Seagull house A/C is as cold as the beer, the tubes are abundant and with good music to go with the cheer. “Cool” places we stopped by at this month included Cockeyed Seagull and Union Tavern – both great places especially if your A/C isn't. Aside from the Seagull’s regular Thursday night open mic, we caught the Hourglass birthday bash for Mark Fenton and Jane Head. And on the opening night of the Olympics, enjoyed the return of Michael Shanks with Rick Recckio’s Sovereign Sound group. Not a bad run... Shanks (former frontman for the Misfit Toys) has always been game when taking on new endeavors. This was something new, and with Rick pounding Michael Shanks @ on the 6-string as Cock-Eyed Seagull hard as Pete from The Who, you might get an idea of where this sound is heading. Not exactly Daltry and Townsend, but along similar lines of higher impact energy. The good stuff. Speaking of good stuff: Union Tavern has a great A/C, quality Chris Hardy pinball, St. Arnold’s & Friends @ Weedwacker on tap, great Union bartenders and a super Tavern venue to hang out and catch good music. This month, our “Outrageous Show” nominee, Dykes on Bykes, had their CD release party at Union Tavern. Their album, “Your Mom Likes My Bike,” is ultimate indie out of Big Door Studios with photos by Mark McKinney. Popular amongst Houston car and motorcycle clubs, this

band has a following similar in force as Come See My Dead Person, a splash of Devo in their blood, and strong enough performancewise to pull it off. Also last month at Union Tavern was Chris Hardy and Friends for Tuesday Open Mic. Starting at 10 p.m., this is one fine young and fun appreciative gathering.

THE LAST HOUR: High Powered Alternative Rock By Rhonda Meredith The Last Hour, an original alternative modern rock band that originally formed in North Carolina, has emerged as a favorite on the local music scene. Earlier in the year, Travis Comer (founder, vocals, and guitar) recruited local musicians Jeffrey Smith (guitar) and Brett Cardiff (bass), and reunited with former band mate Paul Salas (drums) to resurrect The Last Hour in the Houston area. Their first performance together was in March, 2012 at the “Best of Houston Showcase” at the SXSW Festival in Austin. “We literally had one six-hour band practice before the show,” said Smith. “But it didn’t seem that long… We all just clicked.” The Last Hours’ debut went very well and it was sign of positive things to come… “Getting the right group of musicians together isn’t easy sometimes,” says Comer. “You have to find like-minded individuals with talent and ambition to make it work.” After meeting Smith and Cardiff through mutual friends, Comer knew they would compliment his vision for the group. Salas moving from North Carolina to Texas was also meant to be. “I quit my

job, cashed in my 401k, and haven’t looked back,” says Salas, who also goes by the nickname “Latin Lover.” As most bands struggle to find the time to practice, work, Scan for Bonus Material and maintain their sanity, The THE LAST HOUR Last Hour’s members are committed to achieving it all. They practice up to 4x a week to make the current songs tight as well as create new music, and blow off steam by hanging out with the fifth member of the band… Jack Daniel’s. “There is a brotherly vibe,” says Cardiff. “And we know the distinction between working hard and playing hard. There is a time for both.” The Last Hour’s first CD, A Month of Sundays, was recorded with different backing musicians from North Carolina. Comer originally formed the band in 2005 and released this CD in November, 2008. The band dissolved in 2010 when Comer moved to Texas. “When I arrived I started giving out copies of my EP to promote myself. People took interest so I decided to bring back The Last Hour… During 2011, I recorded two demos for two new songs. A special thanks goes to George Thomas III and Charlie Carlisle for helping me resurrect The Last Hour before Paul Salas re-joined this year,” says Comer. The Last Hour has a unique dynamic to their sound. Anyone who is looking for some new music for their CD player would benefit from giving this band a good listen.

By Rae Drady The local music SCENE has been on Fire lately and Borde Room Entertainment is stoking the flames! “The Bee Room,” Bay Area Media Services (BAMS) and SCENE Studios are excited to announce the printing of Guitar Strings and Sailboat Things, an interactive publication by Marc Borde and The Crew about their 38-day sailing musical tour last summer. The first-edition printing of this book, which promotes creativity, adventure, sports and entertainment is expected to be completed before the end of August. This is a first-of-its-kind publication because Borde and The Crew share their epic voyage, filled with adventure on the high seas, through a cutting-edge approach to storytelling by introducing a new “high-tech” type of book that includes downloadable music (an album recorded on the sailboat), interactive Quick React Codes linking to bonus content. An app for IOS devices (iPhone/iPad) is also under development. The Crew successfully completed their “Guitar Strings & Sailboat Things” tour in mid-August 2011, playing 33 shows in 38 days while traveling over 300 miles along the Texas coast at ports from Seabrook to Corpus Christi and back. This book chronicles their journey. The chapters consist of shorts stories and Captain’s and First Mate travel log entries, and the interactive content features including interviews with the members, performance footage, and more. The narrative ranges from the tour’s “test runs” during the Clear Lake sailboat races on Wednesday nights, to bicycle accidents and a man overboard. Captain Marc Borde (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion), First Mate Ryan Beard (vocals, acoustic guitar, percussion), and Deck Hand Blake Plsek (banjo, percussion, vocals) are the primary members of The Crew, but they often collaborate with other musicians at shows. The seeds for this tour and book were first being planted when Borde had the opportunity to develop his love for sailing with his father as a child in Trinidad. When asked recently how he came up with the idea of doing a musical tour all via sailboat and bicycle, Borde said, “It has always been a dream of mine to one day incorporate those things (sailing and music) together, although the way I visualized it in my dream wasn’t exactly the way we did it. I pictured a bigger boat and more organized trip… But I also did it out of necessity because I had to get rid of my truck. All I owned at the time was a bicycle, a sailboat, a guitar and some PA equipment, and a surfboard. I was trying to make the best use of the tools and resources that I had.” Borde added, “I was really inspired by Captain Liz Clark, reading her blog. She had been sailing around the world alone, surfing different breaks, and I figured if she could do it, I could do it.” “Upon returning to Galveston, I bought the Book by Joshua Slocum Sailing Around the World Alone. It’s an awesome book describing his travels and adventure, and after people read my Captain's log, they said it was interesting, and they wanted to hear more. TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE Was a good one this month with 94.5 FM Texas Music Buzz Night and A.D. Rountree at Scout Bar. We caught up with former Magazine drummer, Justin Benson, and his new Houston-based band Hooked4Life. These guys are scoring considerable air time on the San Diego radio dial and were the warm up act for Super Bob’s return to Texas. Earning the title of Honorary Texans for the evening, this D.C.area group had some of the funniest jumping happening. The content between these two bands couldn't be more different, yet both shared the ability for greatsounding, energetic presentations and joy for the music. It was an interesting blend in one evening which can only be Tour Super Bob @ Scout Bar Stop Clear Lake.

The Beach Hut is comprised of an outdoor tropical bar and grill, with dining outside on the beach side of the building, as well as a gift shop and beach supply store inside on the Seawall side of the building. They have live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and are quickly becoming recognized as not only a bar and restaurant, but a good venue for music. Their porch was the stage for the 2nd Annual Music Unity Freedom Festival during spring break in midMarch 2012 (which featured HR of Bad Brains and many other bands), and was also home to the Memorial Day Beach Hut Bash music festival.

Sit back, relax, enjoy the beach air, and watch the waves roll in. There are many places along the Seawall in Galveston to enjoy the end of the summer. However, The Beach Hut, at 8th and Seawall, is the only bar on the beach side, with steps going right down from their palapa onto the sand in a very kidfriendly and dog-friendly beach setting.

Lee says, “One of my goals was to support local music. That’s why we have live music on the weekends. There are some tremendously talented musicians in the area. We have had some great shows here and made some good friends.”

With a beach volleyball court, affordable food options, swings and a beach bowling alley beneath the building, frozen drinks, an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand, live music on the weekends, and more, The Beach Hut provides a memorable experience for any beach-goer. No wonder it has become a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike who are into events like bicycle pub crawls, music festivals and beach volley ball tournaments.

Open every day of the week from 11 a.m. until the last person leaves (weather permitting), The Beach Hut’s menu is a blend of American and Beach cuisine. According to their Facebook (#TheBeachHutGalveston) page, their mission is to showcase “the freshest local seafood, meats and produce. The fare is exciting, innovative and eclectic! The Beach Hut Galveston was conceived to evoke the feel of a beach cafe where the Galveston Island surfers, locals and tourists would relax after a day spent in paradiseGalveston Island… Menu is all fresh, all the time. We make our own salsa, queso and fry our own tortilla chips. Great shrimp and fish tacos. Burgers are the best on the island.”

Owners, Lee and Angela Hunter took over The Beach Hut at the end of October last year, and relocated to their own dream of paradise. Lee says, “We are originally from Dallas. We met while working at the American Airlines Center, where the Stars and the Mavericks play. We were managers running different food and beverage departments. Angela ran 36 concession stands, and I ran the Jack Daniel’s Club and the Platinum Club. Later, I was GM for the double affiliate of the Texas Rangers for their F&B (food and beverage) and Retails. She ran concessions for Pizza Hut Park. It was our dream to own a bar on the beach. We began looking in other cities, but this place was an opportunity that was perfect for us. Galveston became our home. [We love] the weather and the beach. We have a great view at work every day. “

Of the menu, Lee says, “Receiving compliments on our food is another thing I enjoy. The kitchen staff works very hard to make sure that our guests enjoy it.” Lee and Angela are the kind of “hands-on owners” that are often seen clearing tables and personally taking care of customers. They are full of energy. Maybe that is because they are living their tropical paradise dream. About their choice of Galveston as the place they are investing their future in, Angela says, “My favorite thing about Galveston is Galveston. It is a beautiful island. There is so much history here. I have met so many wonderful people.”

Angela adds, “We always talked about someday owning our own bar on the beach. We started looking a few years ago. We would plan vacations around looking at a place that we could someday own. We found this location and knew that it was something we could build and develop into our dream. It just happened to be in Galveston. For the last 16 years, we have been in corporate food sales working large sporting venues, stadiums, and ballparks. We wanted to take something we knew how to do

Get GRITTY For Some Great Causes… GRITTY GODDESS Women’s 5K Obstacle/Mud Run Are you ready to “Get Gritty” for some great causes? On Saturday, November 3, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run takes place at Moody Gardens in Galveston. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure Houston, Girls On The Run of Greater Houston, and The Rainbow Connection (a camp for children fighting cancer and their siblings). “We chose our charities carefully, because we wanted to make sure that the money we donate/raise stays in the Greater Houston/Galveston communities,” says Claire Jordan, Event Co-Director. Participants who want to do even more can also create their own fundraising pages for these charities. The 5k (3.1-mile) course through Moody Gardens will include 25 obstacles, and incorporate mud, water, foam, bubbles, snow, and fog. “There will be lots of fun surprises along the way,” says Jordan. The course incorporates the lazy river at Palm Beach, land along the shore of Offats Bayou, and even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course for some pampering. The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive, so participants can go at their own speed, and skip obstacles they may not be comfortable completing. Waves of 150 participants will go off every 15 minutes starting at 9 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena and Venus. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family or co-workers. “We encourage teams to come up with funny names and dress up in costume,” says Jordan. After completing the course, women can change clothes, relax and enjoy a “Sundae-Muddy-Sundae” – a build-your-own Blue Bell ice cream sundae, the Michelob Ultra bier garten, and live music throughout the day. Saturday evening participants will also be treated to the “Sisterhood of the Soil Soiree”, an after party with live music and fireworks on Palm Beach. “This event is all about camaraderie, stepping out of your comfort zone, and most of all having a blast,” says Jordan. Although the minimum age to participate is 14 years old, the 3:45 p.m. wave of the Gritty Goddess is for the GRITTY GIRLS age 8-13 who want to complete the full 5k obstacle course with their mother, aunt, older sister or female guardian – called the GODDESS + NYMPH CHALLENGE. At 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon there is also the GRITTY KIDS, a shorter 1k obstacle/mud run for both boys and girls. So if I was training to fight a boxer, and then two weeks out, he gets hurt, and they replace him with a Ju-jitsu guy, well the game changes. The other reason is related to my style. I am primarily a wrestler, and I push the pace, so it doesn’t really matter what my opponents style or specialty is, I do what I am going to do regardless. Nutrition is an often overlooked part of our sport, or any sport for that matter. In training camp, I use a nutritionist to design my diet and meals. I usually eat seven times per day. Now, these are very small meals, but

Do women participate in MMA? Yes, they are making big grounds right now. How is the match scored? The match is scored very similar to boxing; most are three rounds unless it is a championship fight and some will go five rounds. Most of the round time is five minutes with a minute break in between. What sort of training is involved with MMA? You are basically training your technique but you have to be in shape for it. It requires both cardio and aerobics and I usually do about a six-week training camp before a match, working out twice a day and eating about seven times a day (guided by a nutritionist). When I am not training for a match, I work out about three times a week. It is my understanding that all MMA fighters specialize really well in one aspect of mixed martial arts. What’s yours? My wrestling background. You fight in a cage—basically, an octagon chain link contraption. Is this for audience protection? Fighting against a cage as opposed to ropes lets the audience view what’s going on, but it gives us a boundary not to fall out of a safe environment. The chain link is coated in nylon. What determines the winner of a match?

spread out. The calories and nutrients are designed around that particular day, hours of training and type of workout. Oh yeah, and LOTS of water. You can imagine with the weight cut of 30 or more pounds and the training regime, how important this is for me. If I just cut calories, I would bottom out in about a week. Massage: This is my favorite part of training camp. I use Eli Carlson once per week. I really do believe in this. I seem to recover from injuries and strains much quicker, and I believe it helps to prevent them. Eli is one of the best. She understands sports, and I think that’s important. So looking at this, you see why I can’t do it for much longer. At 43, the fights are the easy part, but the training camps are grueling. It’s very hard to go six weeks and not get injured. I am very fortunate that I workout at Crossfit with my doctor, Shaun Holt. He gives me great advice and helps me through my training. If you do get hurt, it’s important to know if it’s something you can work around or if you need to give it a break. Having him in my camp gives me that comfort.”

son I’m drawn to this sport is because this is the best way for me to reassure myself that I can still be protective.

It was basically a promotion win; we weren’t fighting for a belt. I do have a Heavyweight Championship belt with Katana (a different league than IXFA).

When is your next match and how long do you think you will continue to compete?

Your opponent in that match, Jeremy McCombs, is a BJJ Purple Belt. What does that mean exactly and what is your status in relation to that?

Why are you called the Celtic Tiger? Because I’m Irish and pace in the cage.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A championship belt is different from that, so his purple belt is not related to IXFA, just his style of fighting. What is your IXFA record? Five and one. I broke my leg in the one loss. (Note: Doctors and ETM personnel are at every match. The matches are state regulated akin to boxing.) It sounds like a pretty aggressive sport. Are you an aggressive person? No, not at all. It is hard for people to understand. There is no emotion when you’re fighting—it’s a chess match basically and full of strategy. So, you are more of a competitive type as opposed to aggressive type? Yes. And I think I do this because I have a protective nature. My biggest fear is that I will be somewhere and something will happen to someone and I will physically not be able to do something. So, the rea-

The 5’10” 205 lb. father of three—known as the “Celtic Tiger” in the cage—is a former police officer, assistant police chief and now City Manager for the City of Nassau Bay. After a three-and-a-half year absence from MMA competition, he’s back. MMA—Mixed Martial Arts—is a sport that involves the use of a mixture of martial art combat techniques to win over the opponent. With striking and grappling being the most common techniques used, this is obviously not a sport for the faint of heart. With sky blue eyes and a dimpled smile, Reed does not look the part of a fierce competitor, but don’t let the looks deceive you.

CHRIS REED Each month The SCENE will recognize a reader who manages to stay Fit To Be SCENE while living a busy and productive life. Chris Reed, the Nassau Bay City Manager who victoriously returned to the MMA Cage last month at age 43 to raise money for Hope Village is Fit To Be SCENE and shares great detail about his training, nutrition and more: “Typical training year round, not including training camp, I usually do three days per week at Crossfit Unity and 2 to 3 days training MMA. Training Camp is typically six weeks from a fight. It’s not really a camp, rather, a time period that we train differently. I used to do 10-week camps, but I have realized as I have gotten older, I have to train smarter. If I do 10 weeks, I will peak too early, and my body will start breaking down. BJJ Black belt Professor Draculino gave me great advice, he said “As we get older, you must train smarter, not harder.”

What was the driving factor that possessed you to get back in the sport of MMA? I saw where your last match was January 2009 until just last month.

I prefer Crossfit type workouts because it closely resembles my sport. The training is not slow and steady it consists of short bursts combining strength and cardio at the same time. Also it allows me to strength train without necessarily putting on extra muscle weight. I walk around 230 pounds, & I fight at 205 pounds, so I can’t afford any extra weight. Also one of the benefits at Crossfit Unity is you basically have a personal trainer at every single workout. During my training camp, I will do Crossfit 5 days per week.

Well, I’ve been wrestling since I was eight-years-old, and became involved with MMA about 13 years ago. I took about two years off, but got back into it to raise money for Hope Village in Friendswood, which provides residential and support services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Everybody has to fight for something in life, and to me, ego and money have never been my motivators—Hope Village was my motivator. Your MMA training obviously came in handy when you were a police officer. Yes, I have a Brown Belt in Judo and I’ve taken Jiu-Jitsu, but as a police officer, you don’t have to use force very often. I’ve usually been able to avoid weapons by using self-defense, so MMA has helped me tremendously. Can you explain the fighting styles allowed in MMA? Just about anything goes. But you can’t poke

MMA Training: During training camp, I will do it five to six times per week. That doesn’t always mean 100% intensity. I would say only about 3 to 4 are highly intense workouts. The others, I work on technique. This MMA training will consist of wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, and Muay Thai. I don’t usually train specifically for an opponent for a few reasons... eyes or stick fingers in someone’s mouth and the groin is a protected area. On the ground, you cannot knee your opponent in the head (although you can when standing). But if you had to compare MMA and boxing, long term injury effects are less. With boxing you wear an 8 to 14 oz. glove as opposed to a 4 oz. glove in MMA, so there’s a big difference. Like with football, there is much more evidence of brain damage in that sport than with MMA.

Baytown’s Pirates Bay Waterpark – Fun for the Family Pirates Bay Water Park, located at the Wayne Gray Sports Complex, 5300 East Road in Baytown, is a Caribbean themed 3-acre water park. Operated by the Baytown Parks and Recreation Department, the family-friendly resort-styled park opened the summer of 2010. Pirates Bay features attractions for everyone with a large and colorful Pirate themed water play center, complete with a large dumping bucket and an awesome array of spray nozzles, and water guns; a 671 foot long lazy river and two large slide towers. Tower activities include fun for both the little ones and daredevils with everything from run-outs to racing tubes. Beach-style “zero-entry” pools (gradually sloping from the deck into the water, becoming deeper with each step, in the manner of a natural beach) is ideal for older people or families with young children.

The park’s feature attraction is the Flowrider surfing machine. The Flowrider provides an endless moving mountain of water with all the excitement of ocean surfing that will challenge all who enter. Surfer boys and girls will ride the waves with an audience, as two covered bleachers flank the machine. The park also includes a climbing wall, a small rectangular pool for lap swimming and programs such as swim lessons and water volleyball. New Texas Coast Boat & Outdoor Show coming to Galveston The Texas Coast Boat & Outdoor Show will take place in October to celebrate the redevelopment and refurbishment of one of Galveston’s oldest landmarks - the Galveston Yacht Basin. This grand “festival”, taking place from October 12-14, at the Galveston Yacht Basin, will feature over 100 boats in the water, power and sail, with many ready to demo right there at the dock, plus a huge onshore exhibition of some of today’s finest watercraft, RV’s and Motor Homes, alongside fishing gear, marine accessories, gadgets and water toys and all things outdoor! The event will also include the action packed National TriHull Powerboat Championship, taking place in view of Show attendees, plus a “Mardi Gras” style Boat Show Parade on Saturday morning along the Seawall, featuring some of the fastest offshore powerboats in the USA. A redfish tournament weigh-in, live bands on stage, food and beverages at realistic prices will complete this three days of fun in the sun in the great City of Galveston. TEXAS NAVY SQUADRON FORMED IN SEABROOK Governor Rick Perry, Commander in Chief of the Texas Navy, has authorized a Texas Navy Squadron to be formed in Seabrook at Lakewood Yacht Club. It is named the Sam Houston Squadron in honor of President Sam Houston, the first Commander in Chief of the original Texas Navy in 1836. An organizational meeting was held in June at Lakewood Yacht Club with 39 Admirals and members attending. State Representative John Davis will perform the installation ceremony. All Texas Navy personnel throughout the state of Texas will be invited to this ceremony.

“Rules of the Road” Boating Class: Aug. 25 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Captain’s Roundtable Chairman Gene Harris has announced that Capt. Stephen Polk will present a program concerning “Rules of the Road” in relationship to dealing with commercial traffic on the waterways. Dripping with Colors

Featured Artist: Hunter Ratcliff

By Kelley Dawson Hunter Ratcliff’s wax dripping paintings not only represent a unique form of art- they are magnificent to behold. After years of participating in sports, Ratcliff was inspired by an influential high school art teacher and thus began his artistic career. Ratcliff started out designing posters for music festivals. He said the music scene “really encouraged his art and paid his way for the festivals.” Ratcliff has performed at many live art shows for his poster art as well as his newest creations, wax drip paintings. A few years ago, having noticed the beautiful way that wax dripped off the candles of his homemade wine bottle candle holder, Ratcliff thought up a way to capture the same effect on canvas. He also perfected the technique to replicate tree-scapes. The wax drippings duplicate a colorful and serene Fall forest setting. Ratcliff explained that creating trees with wax seemed possible and the pieces turned out well. “Everyone wanted a tree,” he said. The tree drippings are one of the two different styles Ratcliff creates with wax drippings. The other style he calls “up and down.” Ratcliff said tapered candles work best for his creations. He prefers the candles colored all the way through versus color-coated candles. To start the paintings, Ratcliff lays out the candles by color and builds a mental picture of the final project. He then takes each candle and drips it into a deliberate pattern up and down the canvas. Ratcliff stated he takes care to control the balance of color. The wax drippings are literally three dimensional and seem incredibly tangible. Therefore, he coats each painting with a polyurethane to keep them intact. His art has been compared to Encaustic painting which is an ancient form of painting with melted beeswax mixed with pigments. Ratcliff’s wax paintings take a tremendous amount of patience and time to complete. The more simple yet colorful “up and down”

pieces can take up to twenty hours and are made with thirty to fifty candles. It’s a much longer process for the tree dripping paintings as Ratcliff twists the canvas for more depth of color and texture. He stated the tree paintings can take forty to fifty hours of labor including the initial drawing to the wax dripping. “It’s therapeutic art. It takes lots of time,” said Ratcliff. Austin Filmmakers to Host Workshop By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor The 14th Annual Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will be presenting actor Brandon Smith the Life Achievement Award at the Cascade Award Gala on September 15, 6 p.m. at the NASA Hilton in Nassau Bay. Master of Ceremony for the evening will be award-winning Ernie Manouse from PBS. The film festival will be held September 13, 14, 15 and 16 and the theme is “Hollywood Nights: Celebrating Indie Filmmakers.” Brandon, a native Texan, has been a working actor since the ’70s and has studied at the famous Old Vic in London. Some of his films he is known for include No Country for Old Men, Jeepers Creepers, Powder, Robo Cop 2 and Bernie (2011). His many TV series included Friday Night Lights, Lonesome Dove and Walker, Texas Ranger. With 65 titles under his belt, Brandon Smith has had many faces on the silver screen. He also received a SAG Award for No Country for Old Men. The Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival executive production team have been busy working to provide four days of celebration of international indie filmmaking with Texas hospitality. The Meet & Greet Mixer with celebrities and guests is September 14 at the Villa Capri Restaurant in Seabrook at 6 p.m. This is the event that everyone has a chance to mingle with the guests and to get autographs. The finalists’ indie films will be showing all day Saturday, September 15 and Sunday the 16th. These screenings are scheduled at the Star Cinema Grill. For times, refer to the website. LUNAR RENDEZVOUS FESTIVAL WRAP-UP

The Lunar Rendezvous Festival wrapped up a successful season on Saturday, July 21 when two events were held. Early Saturday morning was the Honeywell Fun Run at Space Center Houston. Chaired by Jay Lee, the event attracted almost 600 participants. The Honeywell Corporation generously donated $5,000 to the event. Saturday evening was the Coronation Ball at the Galveston Convention Center at the San Luis Resort. It was the end of a season filled with many different events from the Tennis Tournament to the Sunset Service.

The LRF Fashion Show had been held on Monday, July 16 at the Galveston Convention Center. The 450 attendees enjoyed the Strike a Pose Fashion Show that was produced by Lenny Matuszewski, Jr., who once again proved that no one else puts on a more exciting fashion show. The live auction was beautifully handled by Pam Culpepper Cronk as she encouraged people to raise their bids on the exciting live auction items, which included a Michelle watch from Lewis Jewelers and a weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stay in Costa Rica. The evening noted the accomplishments of the young adults who were highlighted throughout the Lunar Rendezvous Festival season. Master of Ceremonies Colonel William McArthur, Jr. formally presented the Princesses, Lieutenants, Little Ladies-in-Waiting and Page who attend Clear Lake area schools. The presentation culminated with the Coronation of Queen Caitlin Huston, Queen Alternate Kristin Bush, and Captain John Thomey for the 2013 Festival. The current members of the Court voted for the new Royals the morning of the Ball. Following the presentation, guests enjoyed dinner and dancing with musical entertainment provided by Password. Jana Miller was the Coronation Ball Chair and her Co-Chairman was Elizabeth Olin. General Chairman Jill Reason has led the Festival to great success. All events benefit the Lunar Rendezvous Festival organization, which is a 501 (c) (3) corporation. The monies are then disbursed to assist various charitable, historical, and cultural organizations around the Bay Area and to help fund 30-40 college scholarships. HOUSTON NATIVE ADAM MAYFIELD CO-STARS IN LOCAL MOVIE TO PREMIERE ON LIFETIME MOVIE NETWORK

he's the closest thing to a 'bad guy' the film has,” Mower stated, “but he is someone the audience has to fall in love with as our lead character falls for him.”

By Adam Donaghey The Preacher's Daughter movie, shot entirely in Houston and the Clear Lake area late 2010, will premiere on the Lifetime Movie Network on August 31. Houston native, Adam Mayfield, co-stars with longtime “Desperate Housewives” supporting actress, Andrea Bowen (she played Teri Hatcher's daughter in the series). Written and directed by Friendswoodbased Michelle Mower, the film was largely cast with Houstonians and helmed by local crew.

When asked why she cast Mayfield, Mower said, “because he has a natural charm about him...But he also has a lot going on under the surface. It's hard to convey that on screen. Most actors I auditioned would either be charming,” she continued, “or they'd be intense. Adam could be both.” From as early as the age of three, Mayfield knew that he wanted to be an actor. After attending the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston, he received a scholarship to DePaul University's Theatre School in Chicago. Although his love of acting was briefly trumped by his love of the environment, he didn't actually accept the scholarship until a year later after a chance meeting with famous actor Patrick Swayze at a charity event.

“The film community in Houston really got behind this project early on,” Mower said. “I felt very supported, which was wonderful [and] will be forever grateful for all the hard work and sacrifices that went into getting this film made.”

Mayfield described his predicament and Swayze's response inspired him: “Do you think all these people would have come out here tonight if I weren’t a famous actor? Hell, no! So be an actor, make a name for yourself, then promote your causes – you will get a lot more attention while you bring awareness to what you believe in.”

TPD centers around the estranged daughter of a small town minister (played by Houston's own, Ron Jackson) who is forced to return to the strict, religious home of her youth where she must confront the troubled relationships that caused her to leave four years before.

Immediately after graduation from DePaul, Mayfield hopped on his Harley and drove straight to Los Angeles. Picking up roles here and there, it was nearly nine years before he landed the part as Scott Chandler for the daytime series, “All My Children;” a gig that would last him 18 months.

You can bet that Mayfield, playing the character of Neal Posey, the charismatic music minister at the family church, is at the center of those “troubled relationships.” As the trailer suggests, he and Bowen, who plays the title role, young Hannah White, were romantically involved before she left her family and friends for a life on her own. Busted for drugs and facing serious jail time, Hannah reluctantly calls her father to bail her out. And he'll do it, under one condition – that she spends her probation back at home.

“In my head, Neal was almost as much a victim of societal pressures as Hannah,” Mower commented on her original script; “but Adam played Neal's weaknesses so well, he made me realize that Neal is more of a coward than a victim. There’s one scene that I can't watch without wanting to spit in Neal's face. I didn't have that reaction when I wrote the words. It was Adam's performance that drove that emotion.”

Upon her return it's clear that the only thing that's changed is Hannah. Neal is still with the church, harboring their dirty little secret and facing demons of his own; and the rest of the town moves along like nothing ever happened. That is, until the dirty little secret gets out.

CONSTRUCTION ON THE SCENE Pod-Zu's (formerly in Texas City) has relocated to the shores of Galveston Bay. Pod-Zu's at Clifton's By the Sea is currently under construction at 10 Grand Avenue in Bacliff. New features in conjunction with this new location include a full bar and live music on "da Porch" (a.k.a. their waterfront courtyard). The kitchen is under the lead direction of Executive Chef Carole Barnett, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu. Her two native Cajun business partners from Lake Charles, she assures us, are overseeing the authenticity of their Cajun cuisine. We'll all have to wait til September to see what this new location with authentic Cajun and Creole food (and atmosphere) serves up for hungry diners. -------------------------------------------------Dempsey’s (formerly in League City) is moving to Webster. By Rhonda Meredith For over 13 years, Mediterraneo Market & Cafe in Nassau Bay has served traditional Mediterranean food from the heart to the table. Over 20 countries border the Mediterranean Sea and the best of each culture is represented on their menu with a bit of American fare as well. Magdy and Sonia Kotb fell in love with the Bay Area after visiting family here in the 1970’s. It wasn’t too long afterwards that they decided to immigrate to the United States from Egypt. And the rest is history.

“Egypt is a melting pot of all cultures. Mediterraneo Market & Cafe is the natural combination of cultures,” says Magdy Kotb. “It is a good mix of relationships and our menu offers a variety for everyone.” Mediterraneo, located at 18033 Upper Bay Road, opens at 9 a.m., Monday through Saturday to serve coffee and biscuits. “It’s like a community center in a sense,” Kotb says. “For the regulars who come in from NASA, synagogues, churches, area musicians, sponsored sports team, and local residents, this is like their home base.” The TV is turned on so sports like the Olympics, or World Cup soccer, or even European sports can be viewed. At lunch and dinner time, Mediterraneo is filled with laughter and banter, as well the sound of dishes being set on the tables. One quick glance and it’s easy to see why you would like to sample many items the menu. One quick taste and it’s even easier to understand why it’s so easy to fall in love with the food. Sonia Kotb is very involved in the day to day kitchen operation. “She cooks like she does at home,” says Kotb. “What we eat at home is the same as our menu.” Sonia learned to cook from her mother. It is her passion, and she honors her mother’s teachings. “We do not serve fast food. Mediterraneo serves real food based on the traditions of the Mediterranean countries. The secret to serving real food is that it tastes good from within. The secret to fresh meat, fish, and poultry is that it has to be marinated with the right combination of spices so the flavor is distinct for that food.”

Spices and herbs are an important part to the overall Mediterranean diet and have medicinal properties and therapeutic effects. It’s one of the keys to an American Medical Association approved diet for a healthy heart. Mediterraneo uses spices, herbs, olive oil, sea salt, red wine, herbal teas and chamomile, and pomegranate drinks to promote healthy eating. Your order is made fresh on an open fire grill without a greasy texture or baked. Not much on the menu is fried. “You will not feel heavy after one of our meals,” says Kotb. Also on the menu are several vegetarian options like Moussaka and Falafel. In fact, you will probably have room for a dessert such as Baklava or Tiramisu. On Friday and Saturday evenings at Mediterraneo, Zara the belly dancer performs and live music from Mickey Hobbs, Wayne Johnson, and other local musicians is on the corner stage. It’s a perfect opportunity to relax with a domestic or imported beer or choose a red wine from California, Greece, Chile, Italy, Spain, Argentina, or Croatia. Sitting outside is a great choice when weather permits. The decorated patio complete with painted metal tables and chairs and covered with huge, colorful patio umbrellas is inviting amidst the lush green plants. Pets are welcomed outside, too. Whether walking in or out, the delicacies at the deli in the front of the restaurant deserve a look. Check out the “Taramosalata” and “Tarama” (Greek caviar,) Egyptian Roumi and Kashkaval cheeses, yogurt, Feta cheese (Domestic, Dodonis, Bulgarian, and French flavors), Baba Ghanoug (roasted eggplant blended with a sesame sauce and seasonings,) Dolmas (grape leaves stuffed with seasoned rice and tzatziki,) and fresh Greek salad. - Continued on Page 13
