PALEO PALS
offers a Healthy Alternative for Holiday Eating
By Rhonda Meredith As the holiday season quickly approaches, we begin making multiple shopping lists, mindlessly browsing through the festive aisles at local stores, and anticipating the Christmas music that begins to get airplay the day before Thanksgiving on various radio stations. After all, ’tis the season! Probably not on your mind is the highly processed, carbobsessed eating pattern that is widespread for many people of all ages throughout the United States and is the culprit behind many of our biggest health ills. It has been said that the biggest gift you can give yourself is the gift of health. Paleo Pals in Seabrook offers delicious dishes based on what the cavemen ate, or better known as the Paleo diet.
“Only it’s not a diet at all,” says Dustin Babin, General Manager of Paleo Pals. “But rather a lifetime plan of eating to optimize your health and well being.” Advocates of this way of eating or lifestyle change refer way back to the Paleolithic period of more than 10,000 years ago, when our diet wasn’t full of processed junk food and more like when our ancestors were hunting and gathering animal protein, fruit, and plants. “The Paleo lifestyle is big on meats, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. We take it a step further by spicing it up and making it fun… and it tastes good,” said Babin. Since opening in August, Paleo Pals has been offering premium entrees that are cooked fresh using grass-fed beef, no hormones, no preservatives, and without the use of any butter or dairy products. These reasonably priced meals are conveniently packaged for portion control and are never frozen. Meal choices include pepper steak with cauliflower mash, chop steak with double veggies and cauliflower mash, Mahi Mahi fish with vegetables, baked chicken with sweet potato mash, tenderloin beef with cauliflower mash, chicken and pork sausage, turkey chili, and chicken soup. The sweet potato hash with nitrate-free bacon, hardboiled egg, and fresh fruit meal is a great pick for any time of day! The entrees are priced $6 to $9 each. And to give you an idea about the cauliflower mash, the versatile vegetable can resemble rice or mashed potatoes. “Everyone loves the cauliflower mash” says Babin. “The kids even like it.” No doubt the flavor of the vegetable medley will satisfy every age too. On a lighter note, Paleo Pals also has frozen fruit smoothies in its Smoothie Shoppe in classic and specialty flavors with a variety of add-ins available. The classic flavorings include “The Classic” with a combination of strawberries and bananas, “The Tropical” infuses mango, pineapple, and strawberries together, “Berry Delicious” is a sweet assortment of berries, and the “Orange Dreamsicle” tastes heavenly with orange and vanilla flavorings.

The Scene’s Great Chefs An On-Going Series Chef Andre Cartier Noah’s Ark Bar & Grill 4438 Boulevard Street, Bacliff 281-339-2895 Background / Experience: I attended the culinary school of “Chef George Cartier” my father and mentor. At the age of 13, I began washing dishes, prepping food and cooking alongside my father working my way up in the culinary world. Working with my father allowed me to learn a variety of techniques which has given me the ability to cook anything from Cajun and soups to seafood and Italian along with good, oldfashioned, down-home meals. Your Specialty: Cajun is my best, but my special ability to take any food product and turn it into something everyone loves takes a close second! Taking pride in what I create is important to me as well as presentation and consistency. Adding a little love to everything I cook makes it all special! Signature Dish: Seafood gumbo made with real Cajun Black Roux and lots of seafood. Black Roux is one of the many recipes of my father’s that I have mastered and use daily. It gives that delicious and unique flavor to the best Gumbo you’ll ever taste. Everywhere I take it, everyone loves it. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Yes, country star Charlie Daniels
while he was performing in Cocoa Beach, Florida. He requested gumbo. I got the opportunity to make it and deliver it to him. Great gumbo and great concert! Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: For a quality black roux, cook medium to medium high heat stirring constantly without scorching ’til smoke rolls off the top. Don’t stop stirring ’til the roux cools.

The Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast Opens in Seabrook By Peggy ‘Domino’ Taylor A new place artists and art patrons can call home just opened in Seabrook and is called the Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast. The old Seabrook Spice Company building is the location of this new gallery gathering that began right before Labor Day. The Art Consortium is under the direction of President Rebecca Collins. At this early beginning, she has presided over the charter board consisting of Diane Royal of Seabrook and Brian Sterling of La Porte. They developed the name and have applied for their 501 c-3 non-profit status. The programs that are being implemented are filling an art void in the Clear Lake Area with many more programs, exhibits and classes being planned for the near future.
Diana Royal and her husband Glen Royal, Mayor of Seabrook have been long supporters of the arts, while bringing more art and artists to Seabrook has been a goal to expand the quaint Seabrook art community. Brain Sterling is an accomplished artist from La Porte, has been instrumental in the La Porte Art League and the Sylvan Beach Art Festival and Market. “The Art Consortium will be a place for different artists, and we are here for them as well as the art patrons. We are accepting memberships for our non-profit Art Consortium from artists of all kinds. Not only will we be holding art festivals, classes and exhibits, but will be holding art camps for the young budding artists also,” said Collins. The most recent event was the Seabrook Art Festival in October and was held on the grounds of Seabrook City Hall and the Community House. The City of Seabrook and the elected officials have been very supportive of the new venture and were the major sponsors of the successful art festival. The Art Consortium (ACTGC) with increasing volunteers is expected to open three days a week, and then to five days a week with increased membership. Memberships are available for $25 for individual artists, $15 for student artists through college, $40 for family memberships and $20 for senior memberships for 65 years and older. As a member, one is invited to attend all general meetings and participate in art events, receive discounts on classes presented through the consortium, receive emails, newsletters and invitations to special events. Members will contribute by volunteering their time and or services to help make the consortium’s events successful and beneficial to all. Areas of interest that members can contribute to are working exhibits, holding workshops, classes, presenting programs, fundraising, children’s programs, the website and more. Plans are currently being made for a photo workshop, acting workshops and various art exhibits and outdoor markets. The next classes start in mid-November with local artist George Gonzales, whose art is also featured in the art community of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He will be teaching his second series of his realistic technique in oils. For more information on the Art Consortium of the Texas Gulf Coast, and to confirm reservations for the art classes, log on to www.artconsortium.org or call 281-907-3140. The address is 1509 ½ Second Street, (across from the Post Office) Seabrook. Join them and keep the arts alive and growing in our community.

Art on a Grand Scale
SC
Featured Artist: Anat Ronen
By Kelley Dawson
Give artist Anat Ronen a paintbrush, and she will paint anytime, anywhere and on any surface, well, other than canvas. The self-taught master of the mural made a niche for herself along the roadways from Houston to Galveston. The iconic murals such as the “space sail ships” adorning both sides of a center column at I-45 and the NASA Bypass have no doubt been viewed by most Bay Area residents as well as thousands of commuters. Ronen painted several marsh and beach ninety-foot-long murals on the Galveston causeway wave wall. She also painted the giant 114-foot by 18-foot Sun Drop and Big Red mural across from Minute Maid Park.

Painting on such a massive scale is “difficult and scary” admits Ronen. In regards to the space sail ship mural, she said it took six days painting from a cherry picker-type crane amid traffic to complete. “It is a sea of sharks around you. It’s intense, loud and often windy,” said Ronen. She added that the locations make going for additional supplies or even going to the bathroom more difficult. To capture the true scale of her huge mural subjects, Ronen said she must first make several passes of the site with her car. She determines the angels, distance and lighting to obtain the right prospective. “Everything is crucial for the design,” said Ronen. She then takes pictures of the surface from where people will view it. Ronen explained that because murals are viewed from a distance, they are drawn differently. The small details aren’t as important as making it as big as possible she said. Plus, murals along highways must be “stretched” since they are seen from the side of and out of a car traveling sixty miles an hour. After each day of painting, Ronen takes a photograph to view at home. “I’m working almost blind,” she said. Ronen reviews her work daily and makes any adjustments to the mural upon returning to work.
States. The Visa itself is proof of Ronen’s artistic ability as she never attended art school. Ronen said she put together over 20 years of illustrations, graphics and photos of murals she painted for family and friends to apply for the Visa. She added the Visa is very limiting and keeps her driven to succeed because “I love living and working here.” Ronen is all business when it comes to her art. According to her it’s not about being lucky; “It’s never saying no.” Ronen said she must make revenue “to pay bills, to survive, to stay here.” She believes her success comes from always trying and making her clients’ visions a reality. She stated, “It’s not about me expressing my art that’s important to me, rather than answering the client’s call.” Her mural art is not only of the drive-by sort. Ronen paints murals for residential and commercial spaces including Clear Creek ISD. She also designs graphic art and participates in the temporary art form of street painting. See more of Ronen’s work at www.anatronen.com.
Israeli-born Ronen obtained an Extraordinary Ability Visa in order to remain and to continue working in the United

Weekends on the Water
A Special Guide To CLEAR LAKE & GALVESTON About the Clear Lake/Bay Area: Located midway between the skyscrapers of Houston and the beaches of Galveston, the NASA, Clear Lake/Bay Area is a unique area featuring the home of manned space flight and the third largest boating market in the nation. Although big city excitement and island beaches are each just minutes away, the Clear Lake/Bay Area has been described as the “Jewel of Houston” and is full of attractions of its own. Boating activities and water recreation provide hours of fun and relaxation in the presence
of the water's natural beauty. Surrounded by water, the land is fertile and offers lush foliage including many evergreen trees and plants. In addition to the area’s natural beauty, technology and history are woven together at the Johnson Space Center, where our nation's astronauts are trained and each manned space flight is monitored. The facility offers an official visitors center, better known as Space Center Houston. This area is also home to a surprisingly high number of quality restaurants, bars, clubs and pubs – including many overlooking the water and accessible via boat. Clear Lake is also a live music lover’s paradise with more than 40 venus offering live performances on a regular basis. The Clear Lake/Bay Area is also geared toward families with a number of amusement parks, game facilities and family festivals.

SCENE FEST: TEXAS INDIE
We would like to thank all of our SCENE FEST volunteers, sponsors, performers and participants for making our celebration of “Texas Indie” a success. Without your support and participation, it just would not have been the amazing event it turned out to be. The largest supporters were Norman Frede Chevrolet (Live Music Sponsor), Duff Distributing (Texas Craft Beer Sponsor), Pier 27 Tavern (Texas Beer Garden Sponsor), Galactic Coast Brewing (sponsor of the Indie Music Shoot-Out) and Cabo Clear Lake (Post Paty Host). Special thanks to our food vendors: Mamacita’s Fine Mexican Food and Sudie’s Catfish & Seafood House. Kudos to our six tasting stations: Signature Bistro, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, Tookie’s Hamburgers, Mattia’s Trattoria & Piano Bar, Rotondo’s Giant Hoagies and Latitudes Restaurant. Other sponsors included: All Points Productions, Paparazzi Houston Photo Booth, Sherlock’s Pub, The Paint Pub, SignQuick, Krewe du Lac, Lauderdale Yacht Sales, Hometrust Company (Jeff Wortham), Bakkhus Taverna,1002 Gemini Interests, LLC, Preferred Engineering, Inc., Law Offices of Judith E. Blanchard, P.C., and artists Shelley Shanks, Ike Rodriguez and CSS Art & Design. Vendors included Ergo (jewelry by Brent Evans), Advocare (Charity Ellis and Shellie Long); Rex Goliath wine samples, Gulf Coast Clinic of Chiropractic, Silverleaf Resorts, Health Works Spine & Sport, Olmox (Filigree Sterling Silver Jewelry), Wells Fargo, Our Creative Touch, The Shoe Bar, Costumes By Cheryl (custom Renaissance/pirate costumes), Kangen Water (Betty Foster), Roger Wayne Bailey, Andy Upchurch and The Rose (a non profit breast cancer organization). Arists Chris Morphis, Samantha Simons,Salli Babbitt and Texifornia Tie Dyes added to the indie atmosphere with their unique artwork. Our host hotel was Seabrook Quality Inn & Suites who provided a safe home base for those who needed a place to “recover” at a great price. To the seven bands whose members all came together and really took the event to the next level, we thank you and appreciate your truly talented gift of song: Mama Tried, Scott Easterwood, Cassette Tape, Chris Hardy, The Last Hour, Hold Fast Fables and Six Gun Sound. WOW! What a night of collaboration, spirits, sound, shopping, eating, camaraderie and beautifully perfect weather. ~ Betsey Ennis

SCENE FEST - How does one celebrate the 10th anniversary of supporting and promoting local dining, events, non-profits, nightlife, live music, spirits in Houston’s most dynamic community? Easy... You host one bodacious throw-down and invite everybody who is the SCENE! And with that, the cosmos of planets, stars, and weather aligned in perfect Clear Lake harmony for what was the greatest four happy hours in the universe. It was a fluidic weaving of independently-owned dining, original music, local art, vendors, authors, composers and Texas craft beer – the strong stuff. Speaking of strong, kudos to Chris Hardy running the Norman Frede Chevrolet Songwriter Showcase and the folks running the Indie Music Showdown. We swear you could feel the sound reverberating
nicely off the Endeavor Tower. The bands sounded great throughout the Landolt Pavillion. Thanks to all who attended for what had to be the year's greatest ratio of fun to all. To all the sponsors, volunteers, Annabelle and Pat for pulling off all the behind-thescenes support. Kudos to Cabo Clear Lake for hosting the post party, which was over-the-top in all aspects. And most importantly, thanks to all of YOU who are the SCENE for coming out and being a part! ~ Andy Eng

51st Annual CHRISTMAS BOAT LANE PARADE December 8 from 6 to 9 p.m • Clear Lake/Kemah Channel The 51st Anniversary Christmas Boat Lane Parade will be Saturday, December 8 from 6 to 9 p.m on Clear Lake and through the Kemah Channel. Ring in the holidays with this Clear Lake tradition. More than 100,000 people traditionally enjoy this event from land and from hundreds of boats anchored throughout the Lake. The parade features more than 100 brightly decorated power and sailboats that will traverse the Clear Lake channel from the South Shore Harbour Marina and the Nassau Bay Lagoon to Galveston Bay. To participate in the parade: Early entry is only $60 per boat and includes a Skipper's Bag filled with fun donations from area merchants and two tickets to the Awards Brunch on Sunday, December 9. A great way to get involved is by participating as a sponsor. There are many sponsorships available, from the individual awards: $150, $250, or $350, up to the $10,000 title sponsorship. This is a great way to advertise your business while spreading a little Christmas cheer. This memorable event is produced by the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and is a success because of the very dedicated committee and their Chairman Jim Christiansen of Lockheed Martin. Fit to Be SCENE: Jack Torregrossa
Back to Back Jack; 15-year triathlete veteran trains & competes in three sports “They are not as intense or as long,” Jack said. I would definitely recommend doing a sprint triathlon with a pool swim, for people who are just starting (triathlons) and then build off from that.”
By Twila Linblade It takes an incredibly self-motivated person to be a triathlete. These individuals dedicate countless hours and energy to train and compete in the multisport races. Although there may be thousands of competitors in a single triathlon, often times they are simply racing against the clock.
Jack, who is married with two adult children, works in sales in San Leon at R.B. Mosher, an industrial supplier for the petrochemical industry. Jack typically trains for the triathlons about four days per week, including one long workout with Paul. The length of the training usually depends on the type of race the pair is training for.
Jack Torregrossa, a Galveston resident, has competed in numerous triathlons since 1997. Jack, who is now 56 years old, began competing when he was 41.
“We might do a bike and run workout for about 3 to 4 hours,” Jack said. “And, the rest is on our own.”
“I was running on the beach one day, and I met Paul (Rodgers) and he asked me if I had ever considered doing a relay,” Jack said. Soon after, Jack and Paul formed a friendship and a triathlon training buddy system. The pair began competing in sprint triathlons, which are shorter distances in the swimming, biking and running events. (Sprint triathlons are short-distance triathlons, usually consisting of a 750meter swim, 20k-bike ride and a 5k-run. This is half the distance of an Olympic triathlon and less than a quarter of the distance of the Ironman. Distances may vary slightly from event to event, but they typically adhere to the above standards. Because of their shorter distances, sprint triathlons have become increasingly popular and are ideal for beginner or novice athletes.)
Although Jack does not consider himself a “serious competitor,” because he does not finish at the top of the races, some might argue that he is since he has completed two Ironman Texas competitions. Jack and Paul have competed in the 2011 and 2012 Ironman Texas Challenge in The Woodlands. Each year, prior to the race, the pair has trained for the running portion of the competition by running in the Houston Marathon, which is held in January each year. (The ironman competitions in The Woodlands include a 2.4-mile swim in Lake Woodlands, a 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.) Since the Ironman is such a lengthy race, Jack said a lot of the training is sporadic and experience based. “A lot of the previous triathlons are confidence builders. For the ironman, you train here and there and just hope it all works together,” he said. Weekly training routines help build endurance for the competitions, Jack said. He and Paul typically swim in the canals in Bayou Vista to prepare for the swimming portion of the races and take long bike rides in the area. Training with a buddy or a group is essential for performance and moral support. - Continued on Next Page

IN THE END, IT’S A NUMBERS GAME Hey, y’all! Meathead, here. Last month I covered good goal planning. This month, I’ll go over how to eat to get the most out of your goal, specifically, a fat loss goal. Nutrition is where most people go wrong on their fitness programs. Nutrition at its nuts and bolts level boils down to numbers, specifically calories (Kcal). What we think of as a calorie is actually a kilocalorie, a measure of heat. One calorie is the amount of energy needed to heat one gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. We use Kcal to measure the energy in food, to determine its fuel value for the body. I’m only going to hit on the calorie counts in this article since breaking down the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate and fat) would take a lot more space than I have here. The optimal way to determine your calorie intake for your goal would be to determine your resting metabolic rate. Resting Metabolic Rate is the number of Kcal your body burns in a 24 hour period at rest. You can find this number through a test called bioelectric impedance analysis. These machines are out there in many Jack Torregrossa • From Page 40 “We could be out for six hours. We always joke that we could be each others’ psychiatrist,” he said. “It’s so easy to talk yourself out of a 90-minute bike ride. You need an accountability partner, because you don’t want to let the other person down as well.” Despite training together, Jack and Paul do not always finish the triathlons together. And, they often set their goals based on previous performances and against the clock. They shake hands and maintain a friendly rivalry with one another. “You have to run your own race and maintain your own pace,” Jack said. Each triathlete has their own training regimen, but Jack does not rely on any
different places and range from using electrodes (most accurate) to bathroom scales which will tell you your body composition by standing on the sensor pads (least accurate). Once you have your resting metabolic rate, figure in another 2030% of that as activity calories and you've got your maintenance number. That’s the number of calories it takes to keep you exactly the way you are currently. If you can’t gain access to one of those machines, you can take your current weight and multiply by 17. This will give you a general working number to start with. We will adjust this number to steer you toward your goal!
a consistent, safe number is 2 pounds of fat per week, using proper nutrition, exercise, rest and supplementation. If you have a maintenance calorie of 2000, a fat loss goal calorie would sit around 1600Kcal (20% deficit). So leaving your body to pull that extra 400 Kcal from fat stores, you can expect to burn off a pound of fat in almost nine days just by changing your eating habits. Further stimulus such as cardio and weight training will speed this process up by increasing your caloric demand per day.
Most of us in the gym have a fat-loss related goal, whether you choose to call it “leaning out,” “toning up,” improving intermuscular definition, or just wanting to fit into smaller pants, it’s all the same goal, only the numbers change. To lose mass, you need to be in a caloric deficit, no more than 20% below your maintenance number or you’ll begin to store calories, since your body will believe it’s in starvation mode. Most people eat too little to lose fat, if you can believe that!
-----------------------------------
Every pound of fat stores 3500 Kcal, so by adjusting your caloric intake, you can track approximately how much fat you can lose safely in one week. Experts claim

HELLSOUTH: Continued from Page 56 TSM: Thoughts on the current state of Texas music, specifically Houston? CD: I think Houston has some really nasty and talented bands… including Bay Area bands ERASETHEVIRUS and Six Gun Sound… and the list goes on! The great thing about Houston is that we aren’t tied down by one style of music… Pour some BBQ sauce on it, twist it up, bend it Texas style and put your way of life into it… I live on 110 acres in the middle of nowhere Texas with 30 head of cattle, 57 chickens and go fishin’ everyday. That comes across in our music! Here in Texas, we don’t have to tell people where we come from… it shows! We live in the greatest city in America!
TSM: About your stage show, what is the ratio of original music and covers? CD: We really don’t throw in a lot of covers… the way I see it, if you wanna hear Cowboys From Hell you can drop a DIME in the Jukebox and hear it the way it was intended. With that said, we do throw in the break down from the end of DOMINATION (Pantera song) as we end our show! TSM: Anything else you want our readers to know about HellSouth? CD: We are just a bunch of dudes doing the best we can at what we do. I am lucky to be surrounded by four guys that can play anything thrown at ‘em. Colby is the best damn drummer in Texas, Matt holds down the sexy, and John keeps the rhythm tight and bright while Eli’s talent with the mic is ferocious! Everyone holds their own and blows it up nightly, I am very proud to say that! HellSouth is currently in the studio recording their debut CD “ONLY THE STRONG.” For more information on the band and tickets for the Drowning Pool show, please visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HellSouth.

the scene’s martini madness
STINGRAY – The weather may be cooling down, but this martini recipe keeps it hot, hot, HOT! Any premium vodka will do because it’s De Kuyper’s Hot Damn red cinnamon schnapps that steals the show. No need for any other ingredient. Just garnish with two cherries and a lime. Show some appreciation, and this drink may show you some mercy. BLUE LAGOON – Thanksgiving is a wonderful tradition. So is expressing gratitude for your blessings, eating turkey, and enjoying football… But if you are so inclined to buck the system, then try a slightly less-traditional double rum martini. That’s right – double rum. San Leon’s own handcrafted Railean (clear) white rum is blended with Malibu’s coconut rum. De Kuyper’s Blue Curacao orange liqueur and a splash of pineapple juice certifies this drink as a slice of tropical heaven. Add two cherries and an orange slice on top. PIRATE DOG – They say a dog is man’s best friend, but at Latitudes, it’s the signature Pirate Dog martini. This smooth drink is prepared with Railean’s Reserve XO dark rum that has been aged in small double charred American oak barrels, pineapple juice, and a splash of Grenadine’s blood-red pomegranate syrup. The result is a potent and pleasantly smooth drink that is garnished with a single cherry. Go ahead Prepared at Latitudes and order it the next time you stop in at 1817 Ave K (San Leon, TX 77539) Latitudes. You will be grateful you did. 281-339-1110 Check out more at www.SCENElive.net

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 51 WHAT’S NEW DEPARTMENT - We caught a couple of them at Jackie’s Brickhouse when we checked out the Texas City band, Tantrum for our first time. Golfers out there know they’re in for a match when paired up with a player sporting a one-iron, deep tan, and squinting eyes. Similarly strong are the members of Tantrum with their very wellequipped stage, sound and light team, deep play list, and the ability to take on the licks not often heard. We’ve got Westbound @ Tantrum on our watch Jackie’s Brickhouse list of bands in the months ahead for straight up rock and roll. A HUGE turnout came to Jackie’s Brickhouse to attend the CD release party for Myrna Sanders’ new self-produced release, “Big Head Diva.” Opening acts this evening inTantrum @ cluded Westbound, Cisco, Jackie’s and joining Myrna on stage Brickhouse was Lynn Raggio (lead guitar), Joann Stone (drums), and Greg Barr (bass). We’ve been catching Myrna since she first wandered onto the SCENE at the Heads & Tails Ladies of the Lake (a Tacl production) so having the release party at the Brickhouse made perfect sense. Listening close to her well-assem- Myrna Sanders @ bled package, listeners Jackie’s Brickhouse can sense the wide span of influences in her arrangements, appreciate cleverly crafted progressions, and catch the full dynamics of relevant life matters in the content. Putting together good CDs is becoming a lost art and Myrna does this one right. Cheers!

ALONG THE EGRET BAY CORRIDOR - We stopped in for a couple shows at the Cockeyed Seagull catching Zach Tate in super roaring form, the kind which grabbed our attention by the jugular when this music master arrived onto the local SCENE. Asking what’s ahead for the year 2013, we’re not totally certain but be assured it will be along the lines of reaching for the best!
Speaking of pursuing the best, we also caught Cisco at the Seagull open mic presenting four new tunes and four old tunes done up new. In the world of evertransitioning and moving on. This scores a +10 on our sheets. Looking forward to more good stuff from Cisco in the year ahead. Book him!

Enjoy LA BRISA’s Tropical Atmosphere Year Round By Rhonda Meredith Since opening in Bacliff in 2003, La Brisa Mexican Bar and Restaurant has focused on flavorful recipes, generous portions, and a dining experience that will surpass your expectations. Patricia and Darwin Wilson’s dedication to these standards being achieved daily was embraced by the surrounding communities. In 2009, La Brisa opened its second location, La Brisa on the Creek in League City.
The League City location also serves five unique adult dessert drinks called “Helados Borrachos.” Blend ice cream, UV Cake vodka, and whipped cream to become “Cake Wasted.” Or ice cream, Jack Daniel’s whiskey and a cherry creates a “Jack Shake.” The “Chocolate Supreme” is sinfully good with Hershey’s chocolate syrup, 360 Double Chocolate vodka, whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles on top.
La Brisa on the Creek boasts a newly constructed outside palapa bar called “The Hut.” The Hut is fully enclosed so the outside elements aren’t a factor. It is truly meant to be enjoyed year round. This outdoor addition behind the restaurant is a perfect venue to dine, partake in the daily food and drink specials, and appreciate the live music entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. The Hut is a fun place to watch the Houston Texans play while imbibing a cold beverage and savoring a tasty treat! Try the Loco Nachos, Southwestern eggrolls, or the Tex-Mex Bottle Caps (sliced pickles and jalapeños fried to perfection, then served with a side of ranch dressing). Of course, La Brisa on the Creek’s drink menu will make you pause with great reflection. Their house specialty drinks are beautifully presented and have a full flavor. The blueberry mojito is muddled with blueberries and is a gorgeous blue. The Tropical Rita is served tall with bits of strawberry, pineapple, and mango also muddled in to sweeten the taste of Jose Cuervo. Houston, we do not have a problem when it comes to the “Flight 1” or “Flight 2” flavored margaritas. Each option consists of five 4-ounce glasses served inside a wooden block and each glass boasts a bold, fruity taste. Order the Flight 1 option and receive melon, pineapple, strawberry, mango and black raspberry margaritas. Get the Flight 2 and get apple, banana, strawberry, piña colada and passion fruit margaritas. You cannot go wrong with either choice.
THE SCENE
La Brisa’s $2 margaritas are back by popular demand and available at both locations! Classic margaritas are only $2 between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. For a buck more, the classic margarita can be taken to new heights. Choose from flavors from the Flight 1 or 2, ten flavors in all!
Come to La Brisa thirsty or hungry! The newest lunch specials priced at $5.99 have been introduced for the season! These specials are grilled chicken wrap and tortilla soup, two ground beef or shredded chicken tacos and tortilla soup, Queso Chicken, tortilla soup and ground beef or shredded chicken taco salad, and the Light Eater’s platter. This platter allows you to savor two of the following: beef, chicken, or cheese enchilada, a soft or crispy beef or chicken taco, cheese chalupa, chili con queso puff or tamale. These specials are offered Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s time for holiday office parties! Anticipating your catering needs, their popular Fajita Fiesta can be delivered to your office (some restrictions apply). La Brisa on the Creek has a banquet room, conference room and a courtyard to host your business or personal events. La Brisa On The Creek also offers valet service on Friday and Saturday, and there is always free Wi-Fi. Visit www.labrisa.net for location information and current news. Click on “Get Free Queso” to sign up for their newsletter. You can also make table reservations. Make sure you “like” La Brisa Mexican Bar and Grill on Facebook for the latest specials.

FEATURED LIVE MUSIC
HELLSOUTH: Right Now Who You Need To Know About By Rhonda Meredith Drowning Pool will be making a Houston tour stop and performing to a standing room only crowd at Scout Bar in Webster on Thursday, November 15. The Dallas based metal band‘s special guests include the Texas Hippie Coalition, Six Gun Sound, and HellSouth. HellSouth has burst onto the Bay Area music scene with a huge bang and garnered a large, loyal following. Chances are you might have attended one of their past two shows at Scout Bar last month when they opened for Saliva or even shared the stage with ERASETHEVIRUS on Halloween night. Cowboy Dave Kelley (guitarist) of HellSouth and the "token Redneck" on the Foley & Thunder Show (weekday mornings on 100.3 KILT FM radio station) spoke with The SCENE Magazine to give us a little more insight into the impressive “North side cats” who have been burning up the Scout Bar stage. TSM: Who is HellSouth? CD: The members of HellSouth are Eli Morris on vocals, Colby Reeves on skins, Matt Flores on bass, and John Randolph and myself on guitars. TSM: How did the band come to be? How long ago? CD: I had the idea as early as 1996… but it took a while to get things lined out like it was supposed to be! The original line up consisted of myself on vocals and guitar and Jack Lee on bass. That was in 1998. Since then, we have found the perfect line up for what we do… I have been jammin' with Colby since he was 10. TSM: Thoughts on sharing the stage with Drowning Pool at Scout Bar?
Everclear & Eve 6 Wednesday, Nov. 7 SCOUT BAR
CD: Man it’s gonna be killer to strap up and play with those guys. Colby and I met and jammed with C.J. and Mike from Drowning Pool almost six years ago at a random jam in Dallas and it was great, those guys got it goin’ on! Scout Bar has the best stage in South Texas. Thomas Wilson and Ryan McGuire treat local bands as if we are touring with Pantera. The sound is amazing and the light show rivals a Pink Floyd show!! Anytime we get the chance to play at Scout, we jump on it!
Big Richard Friday, Nov. 16 CABO
TSM: HellSouth has shared the stage with Saliva. Any other names to mention? CD: We love throwin’ down with our local brothers here in Houston. We have had some amazing opportunities individually and as a band and have been lucky to jam with members of ZZ Top, Skynyrd, Zakk Wylde and a ton of the Texas Country guys like Stoney Larue, Jack Ingram and Cross Canadian Ragweed! - Continued on Page 43
