LOCAL DINING NEWS & NOTES
From humble meat market to premiere steakhouse — Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille turns 35 this summer Perry’s celebrates Bay Area roots with August special It’s been 35 years since the Perry family opened their first restaurant, a small meat market on Scarsdale Blvd. in the Bay Area. Since then, Perry’s has grown to nine family-owned steakhouses across Texas, and last year opened a new location in Chicago, its first outside of the Lone Star State. By staying true to its local roots, the fine dining establishment has developed a loyal following and will open two additional locations in 2014. Perry’s will open in Park Meadows Mall in the Denver area in September and in Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, Texas in November.
BAKKHUS TAVERNA to celebrate 6th Anniversary on Saturday, August 30 Bakkhus Taverna Greek Restaurant, located at 605 6th Street, in the heart of the Lighthouse district and just seconds away from the Kemah Boardwalk, will celebrate their sixth anniversary on Saturday, August 30 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Owner Demetrios Kouloumoundras invites the community to the annual revelry. Enjoy drink specials, freebies and a DJ spinning tunes! “We at Bakkhus are very grateful for the community support and to all who dine here,” said Kouloumoundras. “Without you, we would be obsolete.” The diverse Bakkhus menu offers what is best described as Greek food with a Texas twist. “Whether it’s traditional fare you want or a taste of Greece with a southern, home-style touch, we’ve got you covered. We use the freshest ingredients available and make what we can from scratch.”
THE SCENE
As Perry’s continues to grow, the familyowned business remains committed to the communities it serves by supporting local charities and giving back to patrons through special events and offerings. Their roots are still strong in the Bay Area, with one steakhouse in Clear Lake, Perry’s & Sons Market & Grille in Friendswood, and the original Perry’s & Sons Market & Grille on Scarsdale Blvd. “We’re proud of our history and couldn’t ask for a better place to call home than Clear Lake,” said Chris Perry, founder and CEO of Perry’s Restaurants. “In honor of our friends and loyal guests who have supported us over the last 35 years, we’re pleased to offer our 4444 special at Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille during July and August this summer.” During August, all Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille locations will offer the 4444 special. Guests can choose one item from four courses on Perry’s prix fixe menu for $44 after 4 p.m. For more information and to view the special prix fixe menu, visit www.perryssteakhouse.com.

Chef Beau Leacroy LAZY LIZARD Coastal Kitchen & Cantina 1817 Avenue K • San Leon, TX 77539 What’s your Background/Experience: I have 20 years experience in the restaurant industry, including 10 years as an Executive Chef. I have a Culinary Arts degree from the Art Institute of Houston. I was the Executive Chef for Harborwalk Yacht Club for four years, for Baileys American Grill for three years and have been Chef/Owner of Lazy Lizard for 3+ years (which was previously located in Bayou Vista). I was the Sous Chef for Halliburton Corporate Lodge and at Sunset Station in San Antonio. Your Specialty: My specialty is New American Cuisine: A fusion cuisine using local ingredients to create unique but familiar dishes, with influence from a melting pot of American culture including Latin, Italian, Asian, and Nouvelle French Cuisine. Signature Dish: Seared Golden Tilefish with Blue Crab and Heirloom Tomato-Walnut Brown Butter. This dish is wonderfully elegant yet simple, and really allows for high quality ingredients and careful technique to shine. The Delicate Sweet flavor of Golden Tile and Blue Crab is only enhanced, not overtaken by the acidity of the tomatoes and rich nuttiness of the brown butter, hitting all of the senses evenly and creating a perfectly balanced dish. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? I have prepared meals for countless CEOs of multi-national corporations, and foreign dignitaries from Asia, Europe and the Middle East. - Continued on Page 13

CHEF BEAU LEACROY: Cont. From Page 10 I have cooked for professional athletes of all types, but I truly love cooking for fellow chefs whom I admire, and that is who I remember most. Some of the more memorable for me are Chef Carl Walker, Chef John Sheely, Chef Lance Fegan and Chef Chris Shepard. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers. Preparing fish, other than fried, is a question I get a lot of in the restaurant. My favorite technique for cooking fish is simply sautéing, but it can be tricky if not done correctly. You must start with a perfectly dry fish fillet that has not been exposed to water for too long. Water is the enemy of fish fillets as it can distort the flavor, and texture of the fish, as well as to cause it to stick to your pan or grill. All fresh fish fillets should be stored wrapped in a paper towel, and then plastic wrap. Keep it up to a week in your refrigerator, covered with a freezer bag filled with salted ice. This will ensure no water will come in to contact with the fish, and keep it at a temperature a little above freezing. Now when ready to cook just season with salt and pepper, and sear in very hot pan or grill with a little oil to achieve a nice golden brown crust. Pair with your favorite sauce, and you’re cooking like a chef!

LONE STAR GRILL Step outside the food box at this family-friendly Sports Grill By Rhonda Meredith Step outside the food box at Lone Star Grill, located at 3435 Highway 146 in Bacliff, and enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner in a casual setting with comfortable seating amidst a spacious rustic dĂŠcor. The restaurant is proud to offer the best in steaks, seafood, burgers, and the daily specials are a foodie delight sure to please everyone in the family. Consider these daily food specials: Chicken Fried Tuesdays will be inked on your calendar each week. Choose either the hand-breaded chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken and have it cooked to perfection. The chicken breast is so large that it needs to be cut into three strips. This comfort food comes with mashed potatoes, green beans, and cream gravy. On Wednesdays, the special is the double-cut bone-in pork chop with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, sautĂŠed green beans, and roasted red pepper charred pineapple chutney. - Continued on Page 18

by Hugo Drax). Cassette Tape - Cassette Tape can be described as indescribable. It’s more about the experience, than the genre. Their influences are wide-ranging, from classic rock, modern heavy rock, to Spanish folk music. All of this forms the building blocks to the experimental, hip hop, progressive reggae that has the band flexing their musical muscles into a unique sound.
Performing on the SINGER-SONGWRITER STAGE & MAIN STAGE on Friday, August 15:
Soul In Tension – The terms “very energetic” and “original” come to mind when describing alternative rock band Soul In Tension’s live shows. Expect a lot of jumping and crowd surfing during their raw rock shows.
Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine - Mr. Peabody's Wayback Machine will be kicking off the festivities as the opening act. Come rock, dance, and travel back to the days you almost remember with those songs you could never forget!
The Wayward Sons - The Wayward Sons make use of acoustic and electric guitars, the banjo, mandolin, suitcases, license plates and whatever else they can to produce an alternative-roots-folk sound with a strong emphasis on lyrical story telling.
ERASETHEVIRUS - There is no doubt that industrial metal band ERASETHEVIRUS does very bad things. But, it’s when they are bad that they are GOOD. The sons-of-electronic have a new song remix available on their website (www.erasethevirus.com) and Facebook page titled “Love Bites” (Devour REMIX
The Snow Indian - This honky-tonk heaven really makes you feel like hell – at least it is what they say. Beautiful people. Strange places. Folk. Punk. Indie. Houston. Noise-gasm. Come check out this band. - Continued on Next Page
Matt Cash – The lead guitarist and vocalist of Cassette Tape is performing an incredibly cool acoustic set. He also delivers pizza for Midnite Slice, and if you’re extra nice, you may get a song sung to you as he gives you your piping hot pie. The Truckstop Assassins are also on the schedule for Friday night.
Performing on the SINGER-SONGWRITER STAGE & MAIN STAGE Saturday, August 16: 12 Stones – The veteran post-grunge Christian rock band from Louisiana is seemingly always on the road performing their Billboard music chart hits. What a treat to have them in our backyard. Don’t miss this show. 12 Stones emerged from anonymity via their self-titled debut in 2002 and rose to prominence quickly. Singer Paul McCoy's appeared on the debut hit from Evanescence "Bring Me To Life." Beneath The Scars is the latest album release and includes a diverse array of compositions truly capturing the full gamut of human emotions and delivers a sound that remains undeniably true to 12 Stones. DML Cartel – The members of DML Cartel have many years of performances with numerous bands under their belts. They have stepped outside the cookie-cutter trap that most bands fall into, not to invent a new genre, but to create a musical experiment that breaks down musical stereotypes and unites listeners with a diverse range of musical flavors to suit all tastes. DORYDRIVE – It’s ok that the band says they are Green Bay Packer and L.A. Raider fans. They also enjoy cases of domestic beer a/k/a "sanity water," too. And go as far to say a little Jack Daniels, Bacardi, and Captain never hurt anyone, either. DORYDRIVE'S hybrid of pop, country, and rock has captivated all who listen, and their public demand has kept them on the road for the better part of 2 years with the pleasure of supporting Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Sevendust, Fuel, Candlebox, James Durbin, Adelita’s Way, Pop Evil, Hinder, Hollywood Undead, 10 years, and so many others. Chris J. Hardy – Chris J. Hardy has worked diligently over the past couple of years building his brand and earning his reputation as a standup guy, a professional songwriter and performing artist who is able to connect effortlessly with his audience. Hardy says “There is nothing else I would rather do.” Soulfiya - The veteran heavy-weight based out of Galveston blends American Reggae, Dancehall and Hip-Hop to create meaningful songs and a raucous, high-energy show that keeps the crowds hyped. His music deals with geo-politics, police brutality, neo-colonialism, and the overall false nature of many of today’s popular musicians.
Marc Borde - Captain Marc Borde tells tales through his organic sound and lyrics portraying love, loss, and island life. His latest release with Hold Fast Fables “Cat-O-Nine Tales” is a first-class effort from three of the most talented musicians in the Bay Area. Get it today. The album can be purchased at www.That Captain.com. Shadow Hound - Shadow Hound formed from the wreckage of the Houston Suburb scene. In a mess of drug addiction, dead-end jobs, and closed doors, Shadow Hound breaks through and reminds us we can always find a light... If we can punch through a wall... Bruce Courtney - Courtney strives to put his own interpretation on everything he performs. One of his original songs is “I Don't Wanna Be Friends” because “It conveys a simple message that everyone can relate to.” His favorite cover to acoustically perform is “Come Together” by The Beatles. “It's fun to play, and it’s also fun to see people kind of jam out.” (See the related article in this month’s issue.) The Radio Broadcast - As the house lights go from dim to dark the stage starts to glow and the smoke starts to rise. You hear the faint sound of blips and bleeps grow louder and louder as they sync with the dance rhythm from the kick and the high hat met with a clap. A cymbal crashes as the bass beat smashes and the stage light flashes. The vocal drops and is swept right back up with a warm synth line. Then you find yourself in the middle of an electro dance party brought to you by The Radio Broadcast.

FLATBROKE
THE BAND HENNESSY
School of Rock – A serious treat! For over a decade, School of Rock has been teaching guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and keys through an innovative performance-based method. And they're learning on real rock stages in front of real rock audiences. Get ready to be impressed. Flatbroke – The Corpus Christi band Flatbroke says “It’s not just a name; it’s a way of life.” Get your groove on with this rock band with a hint of reggae. It’s all about the beat and not the bills.
HOLOPHONICS
The Band Hennessy – The Band Hennessy’s namesake Ashley Hennessy won the 2014 Bay Area Houston Idol singing competition. This group plays loud Southern rock and brings their A-game to every performance. The Holophonics - "You guys are like, a real rock band!" said Tiffany at the bar. Releasing four full-length albums and two holiday EPs in just their first year and a half, The Holophonics have a work ethic paralleled by few other bands. They put out their latest album "MaSKArades Vol. 5" on March 25, 2014. It is a tribute to New Jersey legends Saves The Day's 2001 classic "Stay What You Are." - Continued on Page 23

Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival to Honor actor Lew Temple By Peggy “Domino” Taylor The 16th Annual Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will be presenting actor Lew Temple the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cascade Award Gala on September 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the NASA Hilton, 3000 NASA Parkway in Nassau Bay. Master of Ceremony for the evening will be actress and TV host, Nellie Gonzales. The film festival will be held September 20 and 21. Many actors and directors are scheduled to appear along with Lew Temple. Lew Temple was born October 2, 1967, and is an American film actor, perhaps bestknown for his roles as Axel on “The Walking Dead,” the character of Ned Oldham in the action adventure thriller, “Unstoppable” which also starred Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson; directed by Tony Scott, and Cal the diner manager in the comedy-drama “Waitress.”
Born and raised in the Bayou Country of Louisiana, Temple is an extraordinarily diverse actor who is often compared to a chameleon: He has the unique ability to take any character and make it his own. Other film credits include the ranger Hollis in the summer 2013 Disney blockbuster "The Lone Ranger," alongside Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer; Locus Fender in the action film "Domino," starring Kiera Knightley and Mickey Rourke, directed by Tony Scott and Rob Zombie’s "The Devil's Rejects" with Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, William Forsythe and Sherri Moon Zombie. Temple began his acting career on the stage of the prestigious Alley Theatre in Houston, working alongside artists such as Vanessa Redgrave in "Julius Caesar" and "Anthony & Cleopatra," as well as acclaimed writer/directors Michael Wilson, Terrance McNally and Edward Albee. He next landed numerous television roles, as well as roles in independent and mainstream studio films, such as "On the Borderline," "The Newton Boys, and “Angels in the Outfield." Prior to acting, Temple had a Minor League Baseball career with the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros. He worked his way through the Astros system to become Assistant Director of Minor Leagues and Scouting. - Continued on Page 23

CHANGES RESALE:
The Bay Area’s Finest Contemporary Consignment Boutique
By Rhonda Meredith The first thing you notice when you visit Changes Resale, located at 16916 Highway 3 (Park Plaza II building) in Webster, is the ever-changing and striking window display. Currently, the window display features an origami evening gown made of newspapers.
SCENE SPECIAL: In August only, visit the store and mention you saw CHANGES RESALE in The SCENE and be entered into a drawing for a $20 gift certificate! Drawing to be held Saturday, August 30.
Owner Kim Sheffield and her team enjoy putting together the striking displays year-round. “I have an artistic background,” Sheffield said. “I sculpt Santa Clauses and have experience in all sorts of different media, so the windows are my new outlet for that.” The customers definitely enjoy them, but the window displays are only the draw. The real treasure is what is found inside. Current Window Display: Origami evening gown made of newspapers.
Since opening in 2001, Changes Resale has become a destination resale shop. “I have customers who routinely come from Sugarland, The Woodlands, Kingwood and the like,” said Sheffield. “We even have a few diehards that moved to other states and still come see us every time they're in town. And one lady from Louisiana tells us she comes to visit us before her own mother!”
Changes Resale carries casual to formal designer and betterbrand ladies’ clothing, (sizes 0-22), fine and costume jewelry, handbags, accessories and small home décor. Sheffield explains, “We ‘curate’ our selection of inventory. Our consignors know to only bring the best of their best because we are extremely selective on behalf of our customers. The fun part of resale is never knowing what you might find, and we get just as excited as our customers to see what comes in. We have a number of consignors who own boutique shops of their own or work for popular department stores, so we get new-with-tag clothing all the time.” Stop in and shop often at Changes Resale as the inventory changes quickly. “We get great designer purses, and they tend to come in and go out pretty quickly. Our last Louis Vuitton sold right out of the backroom before I even had a chance to put the price tag on it. And right now we have a large selection of James Avery and Brighton pieces,” Sheffield says. “We always have amazing jewelry.”
Sheffield laughs, but is serious when she says she owes the store’s success to her customers’ loyalty and Changes’ commitment to their shopping experience. “That means everything! We want our ladies to leave happier than when they arrived. Some of it is basic; we make sure the store looks pretty and is organized and easy to shop, but the most important thing to us is that our customers feel pampered and attended, and want them to have fun. It must work because sometimes ladies come and stay all day!” She credits her staff with Changes’ popularity as well. “I'm just blessed with a great staff! It’s not only that they know how to pull together great outfits in minutes, or know which cuts or

color will look particularly beautiful on someone. It’s that they are all really warm and talented women who enjoy what they do and genuinely love this shop. And I think that translates beautifully into the service they provide.”
Sheffield is a member of NARTS: The National Association of Resale Professionals. “It’s a vigorous association which provides amazing ongoing support and education in all areas of resale. In previous years, I've attended courses on authentication of designer goods, fashion trends, customer service and pricing to name just a few. The training is provided by many of our industries leaders. Some of my favorite seminars were presented by Sue McCarthy, owner of Women’s Closet Exchange and star of the Style Network’s reality show Resale Royalty. I'm looking forward to attending a NARTS conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, this fall and can’t wait to come back full of new ideas!”

They play songs of living, heart ache, pride, pitchers, and pints at terrific speeds. Fear The Poet - Fear the Poet is a quartet that has a nice fusion of jazz, blues, and folk sound and emotional vocals. At a live show you will be taken on a musical journey that will leave you wondering what will happen next. Lead guitar solos played straight from the heart, and beautifully seamless musical interludes between songs leave you awestruck. Featured Artist: Edgar Bustillos
It’s hard to miss the widely brilliant British flag mural adorning the front half of The Cock & Bull Pub in Seabrook. The mural is the latest painted by local artist Edgar Bustillos. Most Bay Area residents would recognize his many murals emblazon upon local businesses, boutiques, and restaurants. Though Bustillos’ talents are not only found on a large, commercial scale; he produces fine art paintings as well. Bustillos credits much of his artistic talent to being born in the generation without technology and growing up an only child. “Just give me pen and paper. It was my outlet,” he said. Bustillos studied art throughout his school years. While studying art at the College of the Mainland, Bustillos received an opportunity to obtain his art degree from Mass Art in Boston. The cost of living proved too high, and Bustillos moved back to Texas. He continued college and earned a degree in education. Bustillos currently teaches at a local intermediate school and is certified to teach most subjects including art, Spanish and physical education. Bustillos said he enjoys teaching and gaining new perspectives from his students which he incorporates into his art. According to Bustillos, the human form is his favorite subject because of the “endless expression.” He added, “It’s a common denominator for people to relate to.” Bustillos’ paintings combine his love of human form and his extensive world travels while embodying his uniquely distorted perspective and uncompromising color palate. Bustillos admits he likes having full range of control over his art. “Life can be accommodating, settling on something. Art gives me complete control.” Bustillos explained that he uses “distortion to force the viewer to focus on the area I want them to focus on. It’s unique and on purpose.” The bold, lustrous colors are completely by Bustillos’ design. He told, “Every color is mixed to be what I want, not what comes out of a can. I create the tone of what I want it to be.” He also cuts, sands, and builds his own canvas frames to be exactly how he envisions. Having given up brush painting more than four years ago (except for commercial commissions), Bustillos has adapted to air brush technique. His air brush works defy the medium with intricate details and intimate emotion. Bustillos said his larger paintings may take 60 hours to complete and must begin with a solid drawing. Bustillos shared that he often uses several photographs to create one painting. He said, “I may like the head in one photo and the hands in another. Each photo has its own perspective.” Bustillos stated, “My art reflects different interpretations on the many familiar events that people tend to overlook. I feel I have the responsibility of being honest about the events and experiences that have made me the artist I am today.” See all of Bustillos’ unique perspectives at his current fine art show which continues through the month of August at the Evelyn Meador Library 2400 Meyer Ave. in Seabrook. Racing with Galveston Bay Cruising Association GBCA’s Rum Race series have completed five of the eight races scheduled. August has two more races on the 9th and 23rd. The competition is still close. Two of the five classes have the first and second place racers only one point apart. There is still time to come out and secure a first place finish in any of the classes, or just have a leisure sail around the race course. Don’t forget the great party after the race at our Clubhouse in Watergate Marina. Check out the GBCA website (www.gbca.org) for more information Two regattas scheduled for August are the GBCA Single Handed Regatta and the GBCA Mixed Doubles Regatta. These two regattas take place the same weekend but are separate regattas. The Single Handed Regatta is August 16th and the Mixed Doubles Regatta is August 17th. CD REVIEW
WILL PLAY FOR FOOD • VOL. III By Andy Eng I knew this would be a short month with the vacation, but I managed to pack along this year’s complimentary Will Play for Food Volume III CD. Compiled by Roland Belmarez, this 13-song compilation explored many different genres that has me wondering when will we have our next home-grown band going national. I listened to this album both through my trusty KRK reference monitors and at the airport through cheap ear buds. There was definitely a noticeable difference, and I appreciated the sincere gusto and talent put forth by all the bands. Before diving in, I want to mention that we simply need to get more multi-track recorders out there to capture more of what we’re hearing live. We’ve simply too much good stuff in this area not to – So much so, that I might just get back into that game myself. Here’s the quick run through, and in no particular order: Sometimes (Southbound 45) - Well-mixed with each supporting instrument taking turns out front while leaving plenty of room for the featured vocals. This song cries out to be played on the large open-air arena.
me of the best of Jimmy Spheeris, CSN, Loggins and Messina, Simon and Garfunkel and unplugged Led Zeppelin. With some effort, Radio Springs could be a quality national product. Latin Song (Cassette Tape) - This song feaWill Play For Food raised $3,624 for the tures each member of Galveston County Food Bank. “We are this tight-knit group honored and humbled by the generostaking turns going ity of all of the local artists, volunteers solo, something we and supporters who pulled together for don’t hear enough of this ‘starving artists helping starving these days. My suggesartists’ production,” explained organizer tion is for these guys Chris Hardy. “Thank you! Thank you! not to go into the stuYou guys rock!!” dio (just yet), but to hire a multi-track recording engineer to capture the energy of a live performance with proper mixing. This is too good of a group to let get by! Suffer The Last Bridge (Oceans of Slumber) - Top-notch recording and mixing as you would expect out of this group for this musically dynamic number.
Mi Pueblo (Gabay Veray Trio) - Crisp up-beat recording with a sultry groove.
I Live (Fear the Poet) - A classy, clever and entertaining new sound in these parts. Fear The Poet is on my new band of the year card. They should be on yours, too!
Another Change (Recovery Room) - There is lots happening on this song instrumentally, and my hat’s off to the engineers for getting it all to sonically fit. In my mind, this song suits well as a possible movie musical theme track. Let me know when this happens. I'll come watch!
Crash and Burn (Dykes in Bykes) - Listening to the entire album flying home from New York, this song by far could be heard better than the rest at 38,000 feet over the Pratt & Whitney's engines. This band clearly knows how to play over the noise and rumble!
Write It Up (Fox and Cats) - I nearly fell out of my chair at the start of this one, thinking The Pretenders were back together. Music Guru Andy Upchurch once mentioned that two-piece bands are interesting because there's little room to cover if somebody slips up. Fox and Cats has this figured out, pounding out enough sound for a four piece band, easily.
Stand Up (The Grizzly Band) - This a not mixed for earbuds... It screams to be played out in something the size of a stadium or arena.
Walking in the Shadows (Radio Springs) - This group reminds
Turn Around Blues (Hardy & Co.) - Hardy & Co. nails the big country sound. The lyrics on this song struck me as a perpetual soundtrack of life. The Beach Song (Thread Belly) - Crisply recorded complete with panning. The instrumental line could step down a couple db to clear out room for the clever lyrics. This is a fun summer song!
Call to Reserve Your Party Here! 281-332-6702 NASA Road 1 & Hwy. 3
My Bag of Weed (Alvin and the Slick Punks) - In the happy spirit of The Little Mermaid and Under the Sea, this little ditty is (pardon me), a cute coherently poetic ballad complete of sagas and experiences many can relate to. This song could easily become a sing along anthem of many before year’s end.

Brewers Assoc. reports continued growth for craft Mid-Year Craft Production Volume 2010-2014 Small and independent craft brewers enjoyed continued growth in the first half of 2014, according to new mid-year data released by the Brewers Association (BA), the not-for-profit trade association that represents the majority of U.S. breweries. American craft beer production volume increased 18 percent during the first half of the year.
From January through the end of June 2014, approximately 10.6 million barrels of beer were sold by craft brewers, up from 9.0 million barrels over the first half of 2013. (Note: The 18 percent growth rate is based on the updated craft brewer definition and derived from comparable barrel total from the first half of 2013. Midyear figures first reported in 2013 were based on the previous craft brewer definition).

OLDEST TOWN IN TEXAS: Cont. From Page 56 Soap opera fans will be dazzled! Brad Maule, a 22-year veteran of General Hospital, will emcee the event, play his guitar and perform a few of his original songs from his albums. (Maule played Dr. Tony Jones for more than 2 decades on the popular daytime drama. He also had recurring roles on TV’s Three’s Company, Charlie’s Angels, and most recently 7th Heaven). Elvis has left the building – Ehem, entered the building, rather! If you love Elvis, you don't want to miss Camo Elvis. “Camo Elvis,” aka Kim Crisp is a native Texan and an Elvis super fan. His Elvis impersonation and comedy is sure to entertain audience members of all ages. He has been called the “Greatest Camo-wearing Elvis Showman ever,” and has been known to even show up on stage with his motorized bike. “This show is built around fun and great music,” said Crisp, who is also the event director and producer. “This is live entertainment you can sing along with and leave with a smile on your face!” Crisp said he started putting together local talent five years ago for an annual East Texas event. “It grew from 10 people to several hundred in a short time. Nacogdoches is becoming a hotbed for up-andcoming talented musicians. He explained, “I decided to branch further out and felt the need for a family friendly, contemporary and solid-gold music event featuring some very talented artists.” He said the show’s format is based on hits from the ’50s through today including country and rock and original music. Crisp said, “We are excited to be on The Grand stage so we can showcase incredible talent such as ‘The Hottest Guitar Picker in The Lower 48’ – Stephen Pate.” Stephen and wife Jan make up the duo RockingP. These talented vocalists don’t fit into any one particular genre of music, nor do they want to. Their original songs and stylized renditions of well-known covers show off their deep passion for music. Their original songs are influenced and infused with splashes of rock, blues, gospel and country and intertwined with lyrics that reflect traditional and family values. “Each and every person – no matter their age or musical preference – will hear something that night with which they’ll want to sing along. And nobody has to stay home because we’ll keep it clean. And keep it fun!” Jan said. “On any given night, we may cover Patsy Cline, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Otis Redding, Merle Haggard, Prince, Nancy Sinatra, Guns & Roses, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Percy Sledge, Michael Buble, ZZ Top and Fleetwood Mack.” Jan added, “On the 16th, we will be backed by Paul Engleking (bass guitar), Bo Miller (keyboard) and Jason Kelley (drums). These guys will play the entire show. They are fantastic!” Crisp was excited to point out their special guest Bo Miller, “He is an extraordinary musician! He will tickle the ivory keys on piano, organ and accordion. Bo has graced stages with his talent across the U.S. including in Washington D.C., Colorado and New Orleans. Don’t miss this one-night opportunity to see a show like no other! This musical journey across time and genre is sure to have you singing along with many of your favorite songs and you’ll likely add some new favorites to your play list as well. Tickets can be purchased at www.thegrand.com. Prices start at $25, depending on seating preference. Use code CAMOE for discounts online. (Yes, with an E.) “When you arrive at The Grand, mention to the box office that it’s your birthday or anniversary, and the whole group will get free upgraded seating!” said Crisp. Following the show, the performers (Brad Maule and RockingP) will be available for autographs and both will have CDs for sale. RockingP has their album, Genuine, available for purchase on iTunes and CDBaby and are currently working on their next CD. Learn more at www.rockingp.net.

Recorded entirely in an attic studio, the compilation carries with it the influences of the entire British Invasion and review by none other than Justin Haywood. Not too shabby…. The Kansas show was a treat as our hosts let us mingle back stage with the band, mostly with David Ragsdale and Billy Geer. Stand-Up Comedy in Seabrook! Stand-Up Comedy night is back at The Cock & Bull British Pub at the end of August due to popular demand. Gut-busting laughs are what this event is all about. In the words of owner David Walker, “You’ll laugh until your face hurts.” This StandUp Comedy Night, hosted by Timothy Mathis, allows local amateur and professional comedians to strut their stuff in an unrehearsed and original format that will leave you delighted and “hopefully’” rolling on the floor in tears of laughter. Who could ask for more? You’ll get excellent drinks, great meals, friendly staff, valet parking and wonderfully funny jokes!
The Cock & Bull British Pub and Restaurant on Nasa Road One in Seabrook is a step back in time to another country, with its mix of BRITISH PUB & small-town charm and RESTAURANT old-world British quirkiness, is an up-and-coming destination spot as more of a “fun dining” experience. Whether you decide to have a British pint or any of their other extensive selection of beers, wines or mixed drinks at the beautiful and huge wooden bar, throw some darts, play shuffleboard in the game room, or relax in the Queen’s Library by the fireplace; you will feel at home. The friendly and knowledgeable staff will help you find the right beer and choose the perfect authentic meal. All your dreams or fantasies of visiting a British pub – with its camaraderie and atmosphere – will be validated at The Cock & Bull British Pub... Summertime is here, and for the hearty readers out there, this is our time of year soaking in the sun and taking it all in. I just got back from a quick visit into the Big Apple, and while I had a good time living a Steve Martin movie, I’ve got to say, we’ve got a good thing going on here. The run down of all that went down is a bit brief this month, so let’s get to it…. Dylan electric years and Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green era music – A treat to all those who got to partake... Up next, Billy says his next Musical Chairs show will be with some of the Momma Tried gang which should make for a fun time. While at the Seagull in July, we caught something that’s been awhile in the making: John Kohlhauff Honda, usually a 12-string soloist, was sharing the stage with the Hourglass Trio. Ever part of the local live music scene, ’tis great to see John out and about with the gang.
MUSICAL CHAIRS – We’ve been providing mention of this bring-back from yesteryear a couple times now. Hosted by Billy Gilbert, we were riding the short fuse this month and only able to catch part of a set at the Cockeyed Seagull with guests Dohn Bateman, Dennis walker and Ed Martinson (bass/keys, lead/vocals, drum). An interesting sample it was with numbers from the Bob

Just The Facts. The Army veteran has been bartending since 1993 and has been at Palapa’s Bar since 2007. About Palapa’s: He raves about the customers at Palapa’s Bar. He also says, “Working in a seaside atmosphere lends itself to a laid back environment where millionaires and blue collar workers can sit together at the bar.” His Signature Drink is Rumplemintz… Always. “If you don’t know what you want to drink, you get Rumplemintz,” Sean says. “If I like you, you get Rumplemintz. If I don’t like you, you get Rumplemintz.” (You see the pattern?) He Says a Lesser Known Liquor That Deserves Recognition Is… Kentucky Fire from Jim Beam
“spiritual guide.” Livingston said Sean has been thought of as a life coach so it seemed fitting. Sean even admits he is a fair person underneath his tough exterior. Sports. He enjoys all Houston teams and Texas A&M is his favorite college sports team.
Just Because It’s August! The Declaration was signed on August 2, 1776. If you were President what law would you enact, amend, or repeal? Sean says he would make the second amendment the first amendment.
What is the #1 Rule of Bartending? Sean means it when he says, “Always know where your money is at.”
August is “Back To School” month. So what was the best thing and worst thing about high school? The answer to both questions is simple – school. He had a love/hate relationship with it.
Indian Name. Kemah is named for the Indian word meaning “wind in my face.” Palapa’s General Manager Randall Livingston helped choose the Indian name “Alo” for Sean which means

Who You Need To Know About Right Now:
BRUCE COURTNEY
By Rhonda Meredith Local singer-songwriter and musician Bruce Courtney has fond memories of growing up in a house filled with music. His mother played the piano as his dad was singing next to her and his grandmother sang professionally. “She toured with the ‘Revivaltime Choir’ as a soloist in the ‘50s and ‘60s and was on CBS Radio,” said Hal Bushnell photo Courtney. “My grandmother and parents have been my biggest inspiration and encouragement.”
Rat Ranch
Thurs.-Sat., August 14-16 SHERLOCK’S
Courtney says he has been singing “since two years old I'm told.” He was born in Dallas, raised in Pampa, Texas, and came to the Bay Area in 1999. In addition to singing, the 26-year-old Courtney has played guitar for 16 years, and some basic piano. Thinking back he says, “I guess I chose guitar because it always looked like so much fun on stage.” The first song he learned was “Hey Joe” by Jimmy Hendrix. Courtney studied the guitar for eight years with his good friend Clavin Arnold. “He taught me practically everything I know.” After high school, Courtney studied classical guitar at San Jacinto South Campus with Jeremy Garcia and earned an associate’s degree in music.
