ugust was a big month for Galveston County’s Oldest Brewery! Not only did we set another brewery record for sales, but we signed an agreement to take over our neighbor’s place to the north that will almost triple the footprint of the brewery and allow us to expand capacity on a grand scale as we attempt to satisfy current, unsolicited demand. rocKet riDe Despite the record month of sales and production, brown Ale • 7.6% AbV there were shortages of Galactic Coast brew in August with many venues running out before we had more beer to resupply them. And we thank all those who have been enjoying beer and supporting our brewery for that. We are making many moves aimed at increasing production, so we can keep our current outposts stocked and eventually add some of the venues that have reached out to us with interest in becoming new GCB outposts. LOCAL DINING NEWS & NOTES
Super Chef David Coffman arrives at Cullen’s Owners Kevin and Sandra Munz predict new heights for their award-winning restaurant Kevin Munz, the developer/restaurateur who brought world-class dining to the Bay Area with Cullen’s American Grille, is once again raising the community’s culinary bar with the addition of kitchen master David Coffman to his staff. Coffman, the self-taught chef who has blazed his way through some of Houston’s most imaginative restaurant operations, will take command of the kitchen at Cullen’s American Grille beginning today. Late last week, Munz, Cullen’s owner, and his General Manager Ryan Roberts finalized their agreement with Coffman and placed him in charge of their restaurant, catering and banquet operations as Executive Chef. Coffman will also assist with the development of Bravissimo!, a new Italian cuisine concept conceived by Munz and Roberts which is scheduled to open in a space adjacent to Cullen’s this fall. Munz, whose Clearpoint Crossing development has brought new construction and a dozen new businesses to the land adjacent to Cullen’s, hopes local residents will regard him and his enterprises as neighbors. “My wife Sandra and I made a commitment to this community a long time ago,” Munz observes. “We were both raised in this area, our kids grew up in this neighborhood, and we want to see it prosper. We like doing things in a big way, and the addition of David Coffman to our team is just the latest in a series of enhancements we’ve recently made to the Cullen’s complex.” In the last twelve months, Munz and Roberts have upgraded and expanded the restaurant’s meeting and conference space, renovated the main dining area, and established a world class bar whose selection of hundreds of bourbons and scotches has earned it a listing on Great Bourbon Bars of America. Ryan Roberts shares Munz’ enthusiasm for Coffman, whose culinary pedigree boasts service at Houston restaurants including Katsuya, Benjy’s, 17 Restaurant in the Hotel Alden, The Tasting Room and Goro & Gun. “This move should pique the interest of foodies across the Gulf Coast,” says Roberts, who has directed the Cullen’s operation since its launch over six years ago. “With David’s vision and experience, we’re going to make big things happen. Very big things.” The Dallas-born Coffman says he is ready to take Cullen’s to the next level.

NEW RESTAURANT REPORT
LAZY LIZARD COASTAL KITCHEN & CANTINA Offers Carefully Crafted Coastal Mexican Menu By Rhonda Meredith Experience tempting signature dishes, gourmet specialties, and old favorites from the innovative kitchen of Lazy Lizard Coastal Kitchen & Cantina located at 1817 Avenue K in San Leon. The restaurant had previously been located in Bayou Vista for the past 3.5 years. “We outgrew that venue,” said General Manager Larry Irwin. “And we then looked toward a bigger challenge.” Putting together equal parts imagination and more than 20 years of culinary expertise, Chef Beau Leacroy proudly boasts a carefully crafted coastal Mexican menu that will suit any palette. Dishes are created fresh using only the highest quality ingredients. Lazy Lizard takes great pride in supporting the community by sourcing as many ingredients they can from local seafood markets, tortilla factories, and produce farmers in the Gulf Coast area. Begin a meal with Lizard’s Queso, Blackened Shrimp and Crab Nachos, Shrimp and Bacon Quesadillas, or the Blackened Shrimp and Crab Flameado. It may be difficult to choose just one item to start with. Other options equally as scrumptious: Shrimp Cerviche, Campechana (a delicious blend of fresh lump crab, Gulf shrimp and calamari with tomatoes, onion, chiles, cilantro, citrus juice, tomato juice and white wine), or the Levanta Muertos “Raise the Dead” (a spicy blend of fresh oysters, lump crab, Gulf shrimp and calamari with a splash of Cazadores Blanco tequila). House specialties include the Yucatan Platter (Cochinita Pibil with marinated grilled chicken and Gulf shrimp served with pico de gallo, tangy slaw, guacamole, borracho beans and fried rice) and the Cochinita Pibil (Yucatan roasted pork butt rubbed with achiote and spices, roasted in banana leaves and served with tortillas, tangy slaw, pico de gallo, guacamole and choice of two sides). The burgers aren’t ordinary, more like extraordinary! - Continued on Page 13

THE MURAL GIRL
E
Featured Artist: Bree Wristers-Longo
By Kelley Dawson Bree Wristers-Longo also known as The Mural Girl certainly lives up to her nickname. She thrives to provide art in daily life. The local artist can’t think of a better way than adorning everyday places with murals. Bree stated, “I strive to keep art alive in your daily busy life. A reason to stop for a moment and enjoy a piece created by hand.” Bree paints exquisite murals and mastered faux finishes as well. Each stroke illustrates her talent and attention to detail. Bree’s engaging murals and finishes draw the audience to stop and admire; working just as she planned.
Bree began painting when she was a young child. Her mom would let her paint walls in her bedroom each time they moved. “I loved painting murals on my walls,” said Bree. She mentioned she took art classes all the way through college. She said, “Every chance I got, I took an art class.” After college, Bree then taught English in Spain for four years. She shared, “The experience was amazing.” Upon returning to the States, Bree continued teaching. She taught Spanish and art for several years while painting murals and other commissions on the side. The past three years, Bree has been painting murals and creating commissioned pieces full time and is very successful. With much enthusiasm she said, “I love it.” Bree added, I love the broad spectrum of who I paint for. I adore painting for kids. They are so excited to get to be a part of the process and to see it finished.” For commercial work, Bree said she gets to see the inner workings of many businesses; sometimes even from the construction phase. She told, “It’s a constant learning process.” According to Bree, painting is also partial therapy. “I actually feel I get to relax when I go to work. When most people get stressed when they go to work. I get to paint,” she said. Bree’s murals enhance businesses and residences across the Bay Area and many regions throughout Houston. Some of her local murals and signage embellish Kemah’s Bakkhus and Skallywag – which she admitted were some of her favorites because she said she was given free rein to paint was and told, “Do what you know how to do.” Another of Bree’s favorite commissions was a baroque ceiling. She explained, “I got to use a scaffold and act like Michael Angelo. It was harder and more challenging. It changes your perspective.” Bree said she can “paint anything and everything.” She isn’t afraid to try painting unfamiliar subjects. She revealed that she researches “what a subject or piece is all about, so I have a better understanding and grasp of what my client wants. I pull from books, the internet, and photos.” She added, “It’s a chance to gain lots of knowledge.” Bree works together with clients “to ensure the end result is the best.” She said when first talking to clients she learns their personalities to gain style ideas. Bree often chalks the outline of a mural to show the size and scope of the project prior to painting. She tells her clients, “Paint is wonderful. You can change it if you don’t like it. It can be painted over.” Though Bree admitted, “Painting is simply reworking what you’ve already done. You can cover it up, but it’s still there. This isn’t always the case in life.” Hence, Bree declared her motto; “Life is drawing without an eraser.” For commissions, contact Bree The Mural Girl at 409-599-3975 or visit breethemuralgirl.com.

He relayed he was truly pained to have to cancel his appearance due to a work commitment, but looks forward to attending the 17th annual festival next year (Sept. 25 & 26, 2015). We were told Lew Temple sent his sincerest apologies and regrets to fans, and best wishes for this year’s film festival on Sept. 20 & 21. animal webcam, Galveston Art Calender: For tickets to the Moody Gardens, 800-582Cont. The GRITTY GODDESS Returns… October 11 Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run at Moody Gardens On Saturday, October 11, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women, and women only, who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5k (3.1 mile) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam, and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course”, says Event Director Claire Jordan, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” For the October event, a portion of the entry fee is donated to Girls On The Run of Greater Houston, a local charity
which offers a life-skills learning program to girls aged 8-13. Participants can become GOTR “Solemates” and participate in the Gritty Goddess to raise even more funds. A recent addition to the Gritty Goddess event day is the “Gritty Guys Drag Race” at 1 p.m., which allows men to do the Gritty Goddess course, but only if they are dressed in drag. It’s guaranteed to provide the ladies with some extra entertainment! The Gritty Goddess is noncompetitive, so participants can complete the course at their own pace, and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family, or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will go off every 10 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as indi-
viduals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae, and complimentary beer. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon with DJ Hexum. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun”, says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” The minimum age to participate in the Gritty Goddess is 10 years old, however, on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1k obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, aged 6-13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com or www.grittykids.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The SCENE magazine is organizing a participating team! To join other readers, email: betsey@sceneLIVE.net

Second Annual OKTOBERFEST Returns The Tastes Of Germany To Kemah October 4 & 5 in Kemah’s Lighthouse District By Rhonda Meredith Partnered with Budweiser, the second annual Oktoberfest in Kemah is bringing in handcrafted beers from all over the world! There will an 9,000-square-foot beer tent for all to enjoy. The highly anticipated Oktoberfest in Kemah is anticipated to be a huge event and will be held on Saturday, October 4 from noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday, October 5 from noon to 6 p.m. Oktoberfest in Kemah will be held in the heart of Kemah at the City Parking Lot at 604 Bradford Street, adjacent to the Kemah Boardwalk and inside the Lighthouse District. Traditionally, the world famous Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria (Germany), running from late September to the first weekend in October. It's one of Germany’s most famous cultural events to enjoy beer, traditional polka music and German food such as sausage, kraut, and pretzels to name a few tempting tastes. But there is no reason to plan a trip to Germany for the official Oktoberfest, since Gulf Coast Festivals plans to bring Germany to you, right here in Kemah. Send your taste buds on a memorable adventure to Europe and experience the best handcrafted “Old World” beers available, including those from Germany, Holland, Austria and many more. Live music will be provided by… Enzian Buam – This local three-piece band performs the sounds and styles typically heard in the Alpine regions of Europe and produce amazing and super fast Austrian yodels. Jarrod Sterrett and The Hired Guns are known for being able to play songs that get the crowd on their feet and singing at the top of their lungs. Then, this band from Huntsville will take the same crowd down to a slow dancing mood with a love ballad. Breelan Angel is a singer/songwriter from Baytown who is a regular in Nashville where she writes with many A-list luminaries. Her music is original and fresh with just the right blend of southern charm and modern country rock that’s packed with catchy hooks and well-crafted storylines. The Hubenak County Band loves to play music that is enjoyed throughout Texas, including a nice variety of traditional country, new country, favorite oldies, classic rock and more. Rat Ranch is a full on party/rock band that entertain thousands of people every week in clubs across Texas. Their live show has a rock concert atmosphere with state-of-the-art sound and lights as well as four great performers putting their hearts into what they do. Classic rock favorites, modern country, current radio hits and everything in between are presented with maximum impact. Save the date, and head out to the Kemah Oktoberfest and enjoy a festival the way the Germans would appreciate it with tasty food, tons of fun and terrific beer! Purchase tickets at the event or online at www.gulfcoastfestivals.com. Entry is $10 on Saturday and $5 on Sunday with kids 12 and under free.

Weekends on the Water
El Jardin del Mar Hosts 29th Annual Bayfest on October 4 It’s that time of the year when the community of El Jardin del Mar, located in Pasadena, hosts their annual Bayfest event on Saturday, October 4. It’s free and family friendly. Enjoy a day on Galveston Bay at the El Jardin Bayfront Park from noon to 6 p.m. with vendors, moonwalks, games for adults and children, live music, and much more. Live music by Cassette Tape, Audic Empire, Fear The Poet, and In Altum. Cassette Tape can be described as indescribable. To this local band, it’s more about the experience, than the genre. Their influences are wide ranging from classic rock, modern heavy rock, to Spanish folk music. All of this forms the building blocks to the experimental, hip hop, progressive reggae that has the band flexing their musical muscles into a unique sound. Audic Empire was formed in late 2010. Since then, they have been turning heads in the Austin music scene with their psychedelic, reggae rock and feel good tunes. They have a high intensity performance and an astonishing sound
with the contrast of two singers, their red-hot solo guitarist, and rock solid rhythm section. Fear The Poet is a quartet based out of the greater Houston area. Their sound is a nice fusion of jazz, blues, folk, and emotional vocals. They are driven to perform music that they love to play and that you can dance to, sing with, or just sit back and listen to. In Altum, League City’s own progressive, eclectic rock quintet, is passionately driven to create a style of music that reflects their wide range of influences and who they are as a band. They love making music that lowers entropy. Think about that. BBQ and alcohol tickets will be available for purchase. No outside food or drink is allowed. El Jardin, a quiet southeastern Harris County neighborhood, is located at the north end of Todville Rd. in Pasadena just north of Seabrook. Go to www.eljardindelmar.org for directions. - Rhonda Meredith

J/Boat co-founder to attend 5th Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta • Nov. 1 & 2 J/Fest Southwest Regatta Chairman Al Goethe of Lakewood Yacht Club announced that Rodney Johnstone, co-founder of J/Boats, Inc., will again attend and participate in this year’s regatta slated for Sat., Nov. 1, and Sun., Nov. 2, on Galveston Bay. “The Johnstone family has made an undeniable mark on the world of sailing,” remarked Goethe. In addition to over 5,400 J-24’s cruising the waves, there are over 7,000 more J/Boats ranging from the International J/22 to the new J/70 and J/88. The story began in 1975 when Johnstone, then an ad salesman for the sailing trade magazine Soundings, decided to build a sailboat he had been designing since the 1960s. With $400 worth of fiberglass and wood, he built the 24’ x 9’ J/24 “Ragtime” in his three car garage in Stonington, Connecticut. During the summer of 1976, with an all family crew, “Ragtime” beat everything in sight. It was then that Johnstone realized that he had created something special – and the story continues today. The J/Fest Southwest Regatta weekend begins
with the Skippers’ Meeting on Friday night, Oct. 31, at 6:30 pm for check-in, meeting in the club’s ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook, at 7:30 pm. The regatta starts at 10 am on both Sat. and Sun. Following the races on Sat., there will be a dinner with musical entertainment; following the racing on Sun., will be the Awards Ceremony at 4 pm. There will be a special Five-Year Anniversary Trophy presented to any participant who has sailed their boat in all five J/Fest Southwest Regattas. “The overall theme of the regatta, whose title sponsor is the city of Seabrook, is to provide a venue that is all-inclusive to J/Boat owners, their family and friends,” explained Goethe. While racers are on the water, spouses, children and friends can enjoy a myriad of activities and tourist attractions in and around the Bay Area/Houston. Brochures outlining these activities will be included in the skippers’ packets. Additional sponsors making this nation-wide regatta possible are Harken, North U, Rejex, J/World Annapolis, Blackburn Marine, UK Sails and Hayes Rigging. For further information and to register for the regatta, visit the website JFestSouthwest.com.

Harvest Moon Regatta Safety Day slated for Sept. 13 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Harvest Moon Regatta® Chairman Jack Seitzinger has announced that this year’s Harvest Moon Safety Day is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 13, 9 am to 3 pm. It will be held in Lakewood’s ballroom, 2425 NASA Parkway, Seabrook, and is open to all racers at no charge. The Harvest Moon Regatta® is slated for Thurs., Oct. 9 through Sun., Oct. 12, and is a 150 mile offshore race across the Gulf of Mexico from Galveston to Port Aransas, TX. Hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club, the race’s founding and continuing primary sponsor for 29 years has been Bacardi Rum USA. “The theme for this year is to have a fun and safe regatta,” related Seitzinger. “The definition of ‘fun’ is different for many of our over 200 participants: an enjoyable trip off shore to Port Aransas, winning an overall trophy, and for some it will be the first time off-shore.” But, there is no fun when a racer is not safe. Knowing what to do in an emergency is the most important part of a fun trip. The skipper is responsible for the safety of the crew and safety starts with preparation. Topics included in the Safety Day program include making
sure that the boat systems are inspected and working, knowing what to do if there is a water leak or if the motor stops working because the impeller has fouled. Also covered are training the crew, what to do if someone falls, gets seasick, or just needs medical assistance and one needs a plan for entering the Port Aransas channel.

SIGNATURE DRINKS:
Jackie’s Brickhouse
Moscow Mule – The classic Moscow Mule recipe is a Pinnacle vodka-based cocktail with the unusual addition of the all natural zip of Gosling’s ginger beer, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, topped with a wedge of lime, and served in a shiny, elegant copper mug that keeps this drink ice cold. Legend has it that the Moscow Mule came about in the early 1940s when two distributors – one selling vodka and the other selling ginger beer – found themselves in the same predicament: no one would buy their product. They sat at a bar together to drown their sorrows and the rest is history. House ‘Rita – Jackie’s Brickhouse’s house frozen margarita is made with Titanium tequila, fresh lime and lemon juices, and simple syrup. It doesn’t get any fresher than this. The clean, balanced, herbal flavor, of Sauza’s 100% Agave tequila is crisp, refreshing, and mixes beautifully. Taste the difference. Dos A Rita – A Dos A Rita combines a Dos Equis lager with a frozen margarita featuring Sauza Blue tequila. It has a cool presentation. So stay thirsty and hungry because it tastes great with the Shrimp Stuffed Jalapeños, the Red White and Blue Nachos, or the Steak Tomatillo. Prepared at
Titanium Rita – This carefully crafted, hand-made margarita on the rocksfeatures Titanium Premium Tequila.

SEABROOK MUSIC FESTIVAL This is not the same SMF many recall from yesteryear, but a new spin on a familiar name. Hosted by Midnight Slice, the musical lineup was an interesting cross cut of mostly local talent with a splash of regional groups thrown in. Props go to Cabo and 18th Street Pier for their assistance in making the event happen. The heat this year was considerable for an event that was normally held in October, taking its toll with the Saturday music lineup and the big stage shows. Nonetheless, the show went on. To those of you souls who went out and were a part, you must truly be Klingon warrior. Music wise, the sound we heard was crazy superb considering all the forces in play that day. My compliments… Heads up – down the road in El Jardin is going to be a small little festival that should be Additional Seabrook Music a fun time. Festival pictures in this issue! NEWS FROM YOUR FAVORITE PUB & FAMILY RESTAURANT ‘Sing’ to me of HOT Seabrook Scenes
BEER & BITES with LONE PINT Brewing
The newest FUN Event at The Cock & Bull British pub offers everything a 2014 hipster wants: a great British & American Menu with ingredients like Bangers & Mash, Shepard’s Pie, and Fish & Chips; a sleek, loungy atmosphere, gaming on their new shuffleboard or darts; the satisfaction that comes with knowing you're hanging out at a place owned by a couple of “bloody Brits” – and karaoke. Yes, karaoke! No longer banished to the realm of dive bars and strip malls, karaoke caterwauling has blasted beyond the mere mainstream and into the realm of the downright fashionable. Twice per month The Cock & Bull British Pub hosts karaoke night. This month: Tuesday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 23 – each from 7 to 10 p.m.
Even though it’s the oldest fermented drink, beer isn't beloved by everyone and there is a fair-sized group of people who just BRITISH PUB & RESTAURANT don't like the taste of beer. Yet when everyone else around you continues to extol the virtues of every bottle of beer they've consumed, you might begin to wonder just what it is you're missing out on. You may not believe it right now, but to many people, good beer drinking experiences are akin to tasting fine wine or single malt scotch; indeed, one of the tests of a fine beer is that it does taste good. For you, liking the taste of beer may have to be an acquired approach, but it can grow on you gradually through a better understanding of which beers might taste better (to you) and how to serve each beer so that it is at its optimal flavor. Perhaps it's time to reacquaint yourself with beer and to find a taste in beer that does please you.
-----------------------------------------------------
Tips to take ‘THE KARAOKE STAGE’ to stardom at The Cock & Bull British Pub: 1. If you’re nervous, just look at the screen, not at the crowd. No one will care if you don’t make eye contact with them, and if the screen’s up on a wall, you'll just look as if you're singing to some people in the back of the room anyway. 2. Pick a song you’ve sung along to at home or in the car or shower a few times, so you at least have an idea of how it goes. 3. If you start singing and suddenly realize it’s the chipmunk version when you were hoping for a Barry White baritone, don't be afraid to ask the karaoke host to change keys or change the speed. Most machines can do this. 4. Eat the microphone. Professional singers say the best way to get quality sound from a karaoke mic – especially in a loud room – is to hold it as close to your mouth as possible. 5. Pick upbeat songs later in the night – especially on the weekends – because people like to party and dance. If you're desperate to do a weepy ballad, do it early; do it midweek; or get a private room. 6. If you're having serious performance anxiety, pick a crowd pleaser – songs people can't help but sing with you or dance along to, so the focus is on your song, not you. Consider Billy Joel's "Piano Man," Elton John's "Rocket Man" or the ubiquitous "I Will Survive." 7. If you’re tone-deaf and you know it, this does not exclude you from seizing your three minutes of stardom on the karaoke stage. Just rap it or sing-speak it if you have to. As long as you have personality, people will still love it. And if they don't, they'll still clap. "Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band and "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot are popular non-singing songs.
Blake and Heather from Lone Pint Brewing will be at the September “Beer & Bites” beer tasting at The Cock & Bull British Pub on September 25 to enlighten all of the “beer enthusiasts” and soon-to-be enthusiasts on their beers. Lone Pint is a local family brewery with the true beer lover in mind. They are dedicated to creating distinctive local Texas ales that are tasty, hoppy, and quaffable. They use raw whole cone hops for bittering, flavoring, aroma, and dry hopping additions in all their brews. However, an equally important ingredient is the renewable energy that powers the brewery. The spent grain is fed to a local dairy farmer's cows and the spent hops are composted. Their love for beer and dedication to the craft is highly infectious, and will be a great addition to a night of truly spectacular food and beer pairings! Reserve now to join Heather and Blake for Beer & Bites on September 25 from 7 to 9:30 pm. Call 832-282-8202.

Mama Tried at the Lunar Rendezbrew XXI
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the dog days of summer are pretty much over. Not that the torrid heat is a bad thing. It did tend to force us to slow things down a bit. During the month of August, we made fewer stops out on the beat, and at the same time, took in lots of really good live music at a couple benefits and festivals this past month. Let’s run down some of what went down... LUNAR RENDEZBREW - We started off the month of August joining the Mashtronauts at their annual summer gathering. Over the years, we’ve learned how these fiendish brewers often share their stronger potent offerings. This year was no exception. With Emcee Mighty Mike Taylor calling cadence throughout the day, we enjoyed some authentic local thrash grass with none other than Mama Tried. These guys never really take time
to warm up. They simply light the match, and their opening set starts burning like nobody else in the business. The last time I recall Mama Tried performing for a beer event was on the hottest weekend a couple summers ago at the Galveston Lone Start Air Museum for the filming of Galactic Coast Brewery on the Discovery Channel. That was one hot event back then, too, and rest assured, this year’s indoor event at Clear Lake Park was a very welcomed refreshing way to start off the month. COLD FEET – A few months ago, I made quick mention of a local area favorite band of mine, Cold Feet, and how unannounced their shows tended to be. This time around, word started spreading a month in advance as their August show would be the 60th birthday celebration of Donny McCorquodale. - Cont. on Page 47

Experience. Dustin has been bartending for the past 7 years. He joined Lone Star Grill on the Fourth of July, “One day after I landed in Texas,” he said. To Texas From…? Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Dustin grew up mostly in the city of Pawtucket which also is the city the comedy Family Guy is based on. “I've been in the Quahog City for the past 28 years of my life.” Tell Me More. A friend of his was moving his family down to Texas and asked Dustin to help him drive down and get settled. “I asked him how much extra room he had in his U-Haul! Then I packed my bed, bureau, TV and drove 32 hours to Texas.” Signature Drink.“My favorite drink not only to make but to enjoy at home is Rhode Island Coffee Milk. Start with some coffee brandy and mix in some chocolate vodka. Fill glass with rocks, ice cold milk, and a squirt of Autocrat Coffee Syrup. Shake well to get a great frothy delicious treat.” A True Patriot! Dustin does say he is “having a blast” and is very happy living in the Bay Area. “I just can't believe how nice and welcoming everyone is here.” But, “PATRIOT NATION still streams through my blood.” He can watch any football game and enjoy it to the last minute, but “nothing gets me going like a good Pats game.” Favorite holiday? His favorite holiday is “by far Halloween” since he has been known to “throw some awesome costume parties way out of season.” Best gangster movie? The Town. Two of his
favorite quotes come from that movie. Stop by Lone Star Grill and ask him what they are. Print just doesn’t do them justice. You have to HEAR his accent. Life motto. “Life is good. That is solidly how I feel. There is not a second of doubt in my mind that we are going to make it in this crazy world and have a damn good time doing it!” Interests. I love hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, or anything outdoors. I absolutely love astronomy. In fact my hero would have to be Neil deGrasse Tyson. That's the person I would most like to have lunch with. If I only have a few minutes free I love to squeeze in a Ted Talk on my phone. Usually while we are hanging at the bar you will most likely hear me discussing some crazy new idea I heard on a Ted Talk. His Pup Cueball: “A big part of my heart goes to my puppy Cueball, a 110-pound white Mastiff. I had to leave him behind in Rhode Island for a little while, and it drove me nuts. He is here in Texas now and is my only child thus far.”

RAILEAN RUM
Celebrates Grand Opening of their new BUCCANEER BAR
By Rhonda Meredith Avast! All land lubbers are welcome to attend Eagle Point Distillery’s grand opening festivities of their new Buccaneer Bar and visitors center on Friday, September 19, and Saturday, September 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. The “parrrty” coincides with International Talk Like A Pirate Day. You must be 21 years of age or older with valid ID to enter the distillery.
The bubbly Railean explains how she got into the distilling business, and discusses fermentation, distillation theory and operation of the still, dark versus white rum, spirits distilled from agave, barrel aging, and the bottling process. The tour will definitely open your eyes to the work, tender loving care, and countless hours that are put in to literally handcrafting each bottle. It’s very informative and highly recommended. You can sample the RAILEAN spirits and keep a souvenir shot glass to put in your treasure chest.
Eagle Point Distillery is the home to RAILEAN® Handcrafted American Rum™, the first and only rum certified "MADE in USA.” The distillery produces RAILEAN White Rum, RAILEAN Reserve XO, RAILEAN Small Cask, RAILEAN Spiced Rum, RAILEAN "El Perico" 100% Blue Agave Silver, and RAILEAN "El Perico" 100% Blue Agave Reposado and RAILEAN Vodka. Rum has to be the only reason why “Roger” was so jolly and to merge these events together makes sense. There will be contests and prizes for “Best Dressed Pirate” and “Best Talk Like A Pirate” categories.
Tours are $5 per person and take approximately an hour. (Remember you must be 21 years of age or older with valid ID to enter the distillery.) To make a tour appointment, contact Kelly Railean at (713) 545-2742 or send an email to info@Railean.com.

THE
SCENE -> Live Music
A Small Sampling of September Can’t Miss Shows scheduled on the Scene By Rhonda Meredith One of our favorite things about the Bay Area is the diversity of live musical entertainment. And the passion that so many of our area venues have to not only promote, but constantly provide consistently excellent LIVE music in front of our community. Here is a small sampling of some can't-miss acts in the coming weeks:
Ezra Charles Fri., September 12
MelaGrass at Noah’s Ark on Friday, September 12. MelaGrass only has two Texas dates scheduled smack dab in the middle of their extensive tour schedule. So clear your schedule to see their performance. The Knoxville, Tennessee, duo made up of Melanie "The Djembabe" Howe and Mike "The Beard" Snodgrass play acoustic soul “in ya face” music.
T-BONE TOMS
On Saturday, September 13, Van Wilks will be at T-Bone Tom’s. In Austin, Texas, is a city known for its great guitarists. Van Wilks has long been lauded as one of the city’s master players. Declared "a perfect cross between Jimi Hendrix and Van Halen" by the Austin-American Statesman, Van Wilks has toured nationally and internationally with such acts as ZZ Top (whose Billy Gibbons is one of Van’s biggest supporters) and torn the roof off countless venues. The guitar player is also a prostate cancer survivor and awareness advocate. Palms and Kings X both make tour stops at Scout Bar. Be a part of this experience on Monday, September 29, as Palms takes you on a musical journey you won’t soon forget. The Los Angeles heavy, stargazing rock outfit Palms was forged out of an explosive collision as Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno joined forces with critically-lauded post-metal group ISIS (Aaron Harris, Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide). The band has ventured into bold sonic territory that careens from kinetic churning guitars to quiet, atmospheric moments mining rich emotional environments. Having been in the music industry for more than three decades, King’s X knows how to put on a show. Member Jerry Gaskill, dUg Pinnick, and Ty Tabor began their career in Missouri but moved to the Houston area after a record executive courted them. On Friday, October 24, the hard rock band will bring their combination of progressive metal, funk and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues, and British Invasion rock groups to Scout Bar. Tickets are on sale now. - Continued on Page 44
