Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack:
Going Crazy Over Crawfish By Rhonda Meredith Call it what you want: insane, kooky, nutty, or berserk… The crazy Cajuns at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack sure are cray-cray about those “mudbugs.” Consider the crawfish specials the restaurant offers Mondays through Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 10 p.m. Get to “pinching dem tails and sucking dem heads” for only $4.99 per pound. Savor the delectable Cajun flavors from the spicy water or “Cajun bath” the crawfish is cooked in. Their famous crawfish specials are back for 2015, but please note their specials are conditional on market price which could be subject to weather conditions. Go to Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack’s Facebook page for up-to-the minute crawfish specials. January kicks off the crawfish season and the craze is going strong at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, located at 310 Texas Avenue at the base of the Kemah Bridge. The restaurant’s boiling pot has runneth over with crawfish, as well as shrimp, lobsters, and swamp spiders. (The latter is “crabs” for you non-Cajuns.) On Tuesdays, the Swamp Shack features $7 snow crab
clusters from 6 to 10 p.m. Raw oysters are on special for just $4 for a half dozen and $7.95 for a dozen during that time too. Say yum-mee! Baby, it’s been cold outside and the perfect temperature for a bowl of gumbo, Crab Corn Bisque, or Homemade Swamp Chili. The Louisiana Swamp Gumbo comes in either sausage and chicken, or shrimp and crab. Both are filled with swamp veggies and secret spices in a dark brown roux. - Continued on Page 16

Among his awards are the Distinguished Achievement Medal from the Geosciences and Earth Resources Council, and he is the only person to have received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Science Foundation twice.
The Quasar Award is presented each year to an outstanding individual who has contributed greatly to the economic wealth and diversity of the Bay Area Houston region. The Quasar Award will be presented to honor Dr. Merrell in appreciation and acknowledgment of his tremendous work in storm surge protection and his development of the Ike Dike Concept for a storm surge protection system for the upper Texas Gulf Coast. Dr. Merrell holds a B.S. in physics and an M.A. in mathematics from Sam Houston State University, as well as a Ph.D. in oceanography from Texas A&M University where he is a past president. Dr. Merrell said, “I am personally honored and grateful to be chosen as the next Quasar Award winner. I also recognize that I’m a surrogate for a large number of people who have worked tirelessly to advance surge suppression, in particular the coastal barrier approach in their communities, state and even nationally. This special award reflects on their efforts, as well.”
Bob Mitchell, president of Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, praised that work saying, “The Quasar Award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated a steadfast leadership in support of the business foundations of the greater Bay Area Houston region. LEILA’S KITCHEN: Family-Owned Mexican Restaurant Consistently Serving The Bay Area By Rhonda Meredith For more than eight years, Leila’s Kitchen, located at 18119 Egret Bay Blvd. at the NASA Parkway, has focused on its customers. Right from the moment you walk in, the staff’s greeting is warm and welcoming; and the décor is simple and light. The feeling is that you have stepped into someone’s home, rather than just another Mexican restaurant. The familyowned establishment only uses premium meats, top quality spices, and the freshest ingredients in the kitchen. And after opening the menu, you will clearly see the Middle Eastern influences of owner Shakeel Khan. Delight in the cultural fusion from hummus as an appetizer, to the Chicken Tikka (char-broiled quarter chicken marinated overnight in exotic spices), kabob entrees, and the chicken or goat Karahi found within Leila’s Signature Dishes. But that is only part of the selections. Shakeel’s World Famous Baked Stuffed Avocados (with spinach, beef, chicken, or shrimp); and Leila’s Dip (fresh baby spinach, several blended cheeses, choice of fajita beef or chicken) are customer favorites. The seafood platters will please fish and shrimp lovers, and the cabrito (goat) will delight the most discerning palate. Dinners include a nod to the local space industry. Order dinner favorites such as the Apollo (beef taco, cheese enchilada, a tamale, chile con queso, and guacamole); the Challenger (cheese enchilada, beef enchilada, chicken enchilada, beef taco, and a chile con queso puff); the Space Center (chicken chalupa, chicken flauta, chicken enchilada, chicken taco, and chile con queso puff); and the Endeavor (taco al carbon, enchilada al carbon, quesadilla of either beef or chicken) to name a few items. - Continued on Page 15

SWAMP SHACK: Continued From Page 10
music on the outside stage (as long as the weather permits) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Opt for a “Swamp Snack” at the Swamp Shack. Channel your inner Cajun, and order an appetizer like the “Swamp Shack Sampler” and taste some of Crazy Alan’s favorite starters. The “Smoked Oyster Swamp Shack” is a favorite among customers, too. It’s hard to resist these flavors: smoked Parmesan, smoked Ponchatrain, smoked mango salsa, smoked Mexican jalapeño, and smoked pico.
The staff offers wonderful customer service and owners Paul Latour and Alan Franks want to make sure your experience is an enjoyable one. That’s why there is a lot of scurrying going on at the Swamp Shack as preparations have begun for Valentine’s Day and Spring Break. Both are fast approaching. The Swamp Shack can cater any event, as well as (their specialty) crawfish boils. Let the pros handle your needs! Call 281-334-5000 for additional information about the restaurant or catering. You can find the menu online at www.theswampshack.com.
The Swamp Shack’s reasonably priced “Da’ Main Korse” dinner menu features many great food choices that’s homemade fresh in the kitchen: jambalaya with “anduuwee” sausage, shrimp, chicken, catfish, rib eye steak, alligator, and more. The Trout Medallion (two trout filets blackened and wrapped around Cajun stuffing, topped with six blackened shrimp and Ponchatrain sauce) will hook you at the first bite. Can’t decide on just one entrée? No problem. The Swamp Shack offers Cajun platters and the Swamp King Surf & Turf. The Swamp Shack’s Hamburgers are homemade out-of-theordinary with patties mixed with alligator or crawfish tail meat, if so desired. The triple meat (1 pound patty each) SASQUATCH burger is downright a legend in these parts.
The Swamp Shack has a second location in East Houston on I-10 at Federal Road. They are crazy for crawfish there, too! Stop in and enjoy the same outstanding Cajun food and customer service found at the base of the Kemah Bridge!
The Swamp Shack has a laid back and casual atmosphere and the vibe is festive, fun and family friendly. Anywhere is a good seat in the house and there is even a rooftop deck with a killer view. Take a seat at the bar next to the alligator and order a mythical “Swamp Juice” drink. Appreciate live

PROFOUND RADIANCE
EN
Featured Artist: Christine Alexander
By Kelley Dawson “There is something mystical and inspiring when the sun breathes its fire through a stained glass window.” – Christine Alexander, Artisan Local artisan, Christine Alexander creates stunning stained glass creations. Her pieces turn ordinary windows into radiant windows. Alexander’s everchanging works of art add profound color and spectacle to any home. Alexander shared she fell in love with the medium, “with the glass itself” and took a few classes. She received a degree in architecture. She said, “the degree dove-tailed nicely with stained glass work.” Alexander also apprenticed with a wellknown glass artist, Patricia Vloeberghs in Atlanta, Georgia, for three years. She learned design of larger-scale installed pieces that were in tune with a home or commercial building. According to Alexander, she creates pieces that align with the architecture. She stated, “Stained glass is an interesting creature in that it is not easily defined. It encompasses aspects of architecture, fine art, and craft in a way that few other artistic pursuits do.” Alexander revealed her stained glass design methods include both lead came and copper foil techniques. Alexander explained, “I use both methods to meld with the surroundings. Fusing glass and traditional painting techniques to make a volumetric impact.” She added, “I like to create pieces that push the envelope of what we think of as stained glass.” Her most recent piece Fall of Gold incorporates fusion with traditional stained glass and won Best in Show at the 2014 Glass Gathering Member Show. A Clear Lake resident, Alexander currently has a Residency at Harmony stained glass. She is also very involved with the Glass Gathering Organization which she said is comprised of artists working in all glass mediums. Most of Alexander’s work is custom commissions. She expressed her favorite part of her craft “is working with a client whom may or may not have been involved with the creative process and turning their ideas into something real and embodies their ideas. It’s a cooperative creative process.” - Continued on Page 20

A Tribute to the Woman Who Changed the Arts in Bay Area “Take Time to Dance: A Tribute to Lynette Mason Gregg” • February 28 - March 1 By Domino Taylor The Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre will pay tribute to its founder, Lynette Mason Gregg, with a retrospective performance of dance on February 28 - March 1, 2015, at the University of Houston - Clear Lake’s Bayou Theatre, 2700 Bay Area. A wide variety of favorite pieces from BAHBT’s history will be presented, as well as new pieces choreographed in Mason Gregg’s honor. The new works will represent how Mason Gregg changed the face of the arts in the Bay Area and touched so many dancers’ lives. From a Swan Lake classical ballet excerpt to contemporary numbers, some energetic tapping and even a musical number from Hairspray, Take Time to Dance will both touch your heart and make you smile in its telling of the story of Mason Gregg and BAHBT through dance. Mason Gregg passed away on October 24, 2014. Her life’s work and passion were the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Bay Area Houston Ballet & Theatre, founded in 1972 and 1975, respectively, with a desire to establish a professional training facility for aspiring dancers and to enrich the overall atmosphere of the community. She devoted her life to these two organizations, training and inspiring young dancers, now three generations strong. The sky was the limit with Mason Gregg; she knew that if you could dream it, you could achieve it. Her favorite quote was “Never, ever, ever, give up.” She was passionate about the arts and inspiring young artists. Mason Gregg was a visionary that did nothing in moderation and who truly epitomized the theme of BAHBT’s 2014-2015 season, Embrace Artistry. Mason Gregg produced 39 seasons and hundreds of ballets for BAHBT and brought in dancers from all over the world to Bay Area Houston as guest artists. She also trained thousands of dancers who now share their love of the arts both on and off the stage throughout the U.S. and in Europe. Tickets for this eclectic performance are $25 and $35 and will go on sale Friday, January 16. Visit www.bahbt.org or call 281-480-1617 to purchase individual or group tickets. An Encore! cocktail reception will immediately follow Saturday evening’s performance. Tickets for this event and the Saturday evening show may be purchased for $75. Saturday performances are 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday performance is at 2 p.m. If you would like to make a donation to BAHBT in memory of Mason Gregg to support the organization and a scholarship that has been established in her name, you may do so by contacting BAHBT at office@bahbt.org or call 281-480-1617. ABOUT BAY AREA HOUSTON BALLET & THEATRE: Founded in 1976, Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theatre (BAHBT) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that strives to enhance cultural awareness of the arts. Got Puck? T-Bone Tom’s & Tookie’s Do! By Rhonda Meredith
HYC Revognah Regatta
Don’t go through life without goals. Two local restaurants take that statement to heart. TBone Tom’s and Tookie’s each have an ice hockey teams in a novice recreational league for adults. Tookie’s even has a traveling team that will be headed to Las Vegas in the spring time. In hockey, they say half the game is mental, and half is dental… But that may not be true. Barry Terrell, who sponsors both the Tookie’s and T-Bone Tom’s teams, says he plays the team sport “for health reasons, friendly competition, camaraderie, and most importantly because it is fun.” Hockey is the coolest sport. The league is year-round with about three seasons per year. Each season has approximately 12 games, including a playoff and a championship game. Both teams play their regular season games weekly at the Bellerive Ice Center in Houston‘s Sharpstown area; only a 35-mile drive from Kemah. They had to transfer from Space City Ice Station when that rink closed a few months ago. Remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. More than 80 players make up the co-ed teams. With new teams drafted each season, Terrell says the teams are always looking for new players to draft. No ice skating experience is required, but a fun attitude is a must. And if you don’t want to be a part of the action on the ice, be an athletic supporter and cheer the teams on from the stands. For more information, email Terrell at tbonetoms@earthlink.net.

HYC Spring Series #1 Vice Commodore Joyce Maxwell, Commodore Tom Collier, Rear Commodore Don Mitchell, and Fleet Captain Jim Winton cut the ribbon to open B shed were
Lakewood Yacht Club Commodore Tom Collier helped to cut the ribbon for the club’s “latest and greatest” shed on Clear Lake, according to their Board of Directors. Joining him for the ceremony were Vice Commodore Joyce Maxwell, Rear Commodore Don Mitchell and Fleet Captain Jim Winton. “Our B shed was completely re-built from the bottom of the lake and is unique. First in its design, B shed has floating piers and docks under a fixed roof,” explained Collier. “It is the only one like it on Clear Lake or Galveston Bay and definitely has advantages over the fixed piers and docks, especially in storm conditions.” B shed has 23 floating slips, sized 50’, 55’, 60’ and 65’ in length. Each slip comes with a full sized locker, free dockside water, and complimentary wireless high speed internet. B shed has Trex Composite ™ decking, LED lighting and 50 amp metered shore power.

Mark May & The Paul Ramirez Band @ Katie’s
Michael Stevens @ Gabachos
Paul Ramirez Band trading off solo after solo, back and forth lead licks, that clearly had to be wired in straight from the cosmos. Music lovers came in for this Thursday night show from as far as Katy and Kingwood and stayed the entire evening despite having to work the next day. KPFT’s Blues Hound, James Nagle, along with his Houston Blues Society entourage were in the house and true to form, Mark played the show on borrowed equipment, this year provided by Phil Morrison, a musician from Manvel. Mark says he’s still playing the local scene up in Ohio with his band and spending time in the studio putting together another CD. I can’t wait!
FOLLOW-UP – A few months ago, we crossed trails briefly with The Michael Stevens Band, had to cut out prematurely and owed them a follow-up. We had a pleasant surprise catching Michael, sans the band, at Gabacho’s Restaurant in El Lago. We’ve enjoyed TMSB over the years as they effortlessly pounded out endless medleys, never needing a playlist, interacting with the audience and going wherever the evening may lead. And this evening, it was definitely one for the audience. OVER THE TOP – This month goes to Katie’s for the annual return of Mark May. In years past, Mark would hang out this time of year for nearly a month, playing shows all across the greater Houston metro area. Events shortened this year’s visit to a week, and of the two shows that were on the schedule, the good folks at Katie’s in Bacliff scored one of them. A packed house took in an evening of the finest with Mark May and The

According those who read tree rings for a living, word is that we are in a 2000 year cooling spell, so do what you can to keep the flame alive, and hopefully with some of our awesome live music, we’ll catch you out there on The SCENE!

Texas Buzz Music Awards: From Page 35 With the addition of two more members, the individual influences of each member catalyzed an evolution in the band's style. The results were quickly selfevident after bursting into the Houston music scene in February 2014. Valeluna has won three awards in 2014. Their debut album, "In Your Absence," was a named a top-10 album of 2014 by local media outlets just nine months after their live debut. By combining post-rock's calming ambience, classic rock inspired guitar, progressive rock influenced drumming, and melodic bass grooves, Valeluna's sound will envelope you in an atmosphere of emotional alternative rock music. Listen to their album stream and purchase at www.Valeluna.com.

Best Metal Band - SPACE RHINO: What does Space Rhino sound like? How about a cosmic horde of rhinos stampeding through the universe in search of heavier beings and the eternal buzz? This metal threesome out of Houston is comprised of Theo Tsa (guitar), Julian Zamora (bass, vocals), and Cliff “Corn Bred” Long (drums). Motorhead is cited as a musical influence and “kicking reptilian ass” is one of their interests. They have accomplished a lot for only having been together since April 2013, and they are just getting started. Space Rhino is on Facebook. Best Live Performance - VANILLA SUGAR: This all-female, electronic/experimental band brings high energy to the stage, and delivers an eclectic mix of genres into their songwriting. Vanilla Sugar came about in 2012 when Jessica Perry (vocals, keys) and Cortnii Rose (vocals, keys) went on a search to create an all female band with an experimental sound. “KB” (drums) and Vanessa V (guitar) complete the line-up. Vanilla Sugar's current mission is to spread their music and expand their fan base. Like them on Facebook.

All of this forms the building blocks to the experimental, hip hop, progressive reggae that has the band flexing their musical muscles into a unique sound. Just go with the psychedelic and reggae flow... The members of Cassette Tape are Matt Cash (lead guitar, vocals). Cam Rowe (bass), David Rios (percussion), Noe Molina (drums), and Mark Lum (rhythm guitar, vocals). Cassette Tape can be found on Facebook. Best Alternative Band - FOX & CATS: Josh Willems (guitar, vocals) and Nicole Wigginton (drums), both Clear Lake alums, make up the rock duo of Fox & Cats. The indie rock two-piece Fox & Cats was officially formed in the summer of 2011 with the band name stemming from an inside joke about the sexy actress Megan Fox and about not-so-sexy house cats. Willems describes the duo’s sound as “nothing fancy, just deeply honest, straight-up rock and roll with emotion and passion." Fox & Cats released their first EP “This Is Your Brain On Love” in

Best New Band - THE WEEDS: The Weeds is a band made up of four very talented teenagers, ranging from 15 to 18 years old, who play a mix of both classic and modern rock, and even a little blues. They will be performing at Scout Bar with Cassette Tape on Saturday, January 3. The Weeds started out in 2012 as a two piece band with Addison Ruddell (vocals, bass) and Ryan Isbell (drums). In 2013, Blake Isbell (rhythm guitar) and Jonathan Hales (guitar) both joined the band and completed the line-up. Their first gig to play was in December 2013. Now, on any given weekend, you can catch The Weeds playing venues all over Houston and the surrounding areas. Check them out on Facebook. Best Rock Band – VALELUNA: This atmospheric rock band hails from Texas City. received the then-only permit to brew and sell beer in Galveston County. Located in a sliver of unincorporated Galveston County between League City and Dickinson, Galactic Coast Brewing was founded by Michael Taylor and myself (John Ennis), and we are proud to return the rich heritage of brewing to the county. Inspired by the innovative and competitive legacy of the area’s space exploration program and deep tradition of marine and chemical engineering, the brewery has followed a unique model by leveraging enthusiasm, creativity and revolutionary thinking to overcome the unwillingness to start out in debt and burn extensive capital. From a self-designed electric brewhouse, custom-built 4-at-a-time keg cleaner/sanitizer, DIY glycol machine or the development of the self-proven protocols and procedures necessary when developing a custom system instead of learning a proven one, Galactic Coast Brewing is coming at the brewing game from a different angle than most startups. But we are also fans of the five Galveston County businesses, our “brothers in brew,” who have followed Galactic Coast into the local brewing industry with their own creativity, out-

Galveston County’s commercial brewing history dates back to 1895 when a team lead by German-born Adolphus Busch, co-founder of Anheuser-Bush, raised $400,000 to found the Galveston Brewing Company in 1893 and finish construction of a giant island brewery at 33rd & Post Office & Church Streets in 1895. The brewery was so well-constructed that it survived the Hurricane of 1900 that destroyed most of the island and killed an estimated 6,000 people.
Galveston Brewing 1895-1918 Galveston-Houston Breweries Inc. 1934-1955 Falstaff Brewing 1956-1981
Shortly after the Hurricane of 1900, Prussian-born brewmaster Hermann Weiss moved to Galveston from San Antonio and launched two breweries on the island. First was the short lived J. A. Brockman – Weiss Beer Brewery followed by the Weiss and Son's Brewery, with his sons Herman Jr. and Charles. In 1909 they closed that brewery when Hermann was offered the position of head brewmaster at the newly formed Shiner Brewery which is now known as the Spoetzl Brewery. Both his sons worked at Shiner as well, but Herman would later take a position in San Antonio as the head brewmaster for the San Antonio Brewing Association which later became the Pearl Brewing Company. A fourth pre-Prohibition brewery on the island was the Moritz Brock Beer Co. Brewery. But Prohibition would bring change and force Galveston Brewing Company to pivot and produce an alcohol-free beverage called Galvo as Southern Beverage, which was a flop and eventually the brewing equipment was removed in order to produce soft drinks as the XXX Company. Following Prohibition, the brewing equipment returned and the giant island brewery at 33rd & Post Office & Church Street opened again in 1934 as the Galveston-Houston Breweries, Inc., which it remained until it was sold to Falstaff Brewing in 1956. A quarter century later found demand for Falstaff falling, and the brewery closed in 1981 and eventually the tanks were removed and sent to China where they produce Pabst Blue Ribbon today. The massive 313,000-sq.ft. structure has seen little use since, minus as the setting of a B-Grade horror movie in 2010. It was listed by the Galveston Historical Foundation as one of the Island’s most endangered historic structures and, similar to Houston’s Astrodome, there have been ideas floated over the years of how to commercially redevelop the space and/or land with no action.

Signature Drinks:
LONE STAR GRILL Asian Lemon Drop – Absolut Citron, a premium vodka flavored with lemon, lime, and a hint of lemon peel, is infused with fresh lemon juice to create a tart foundation to this magnificent cocktail. Add the round sweetness of mango juice and a kick from spicy ginger mixed into a simple syrup, and garnish with a lemon peel twist. Pair it with the Grilled Flat Iron Steak with herb roasted fingerling potatoes, grilled asparagus, and complemented with a house steak sauce. Bayshore Rum – This drink packs a one, two, THREE punch! Start with Railean Handmade Texas White Rum from sunny San Leon, Cruzan “The Don’t Hurry” Rum produced in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the higher alcohol content and unique spice blend of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, out of New York. This threesome plays well with the company of pineapple juice, orange juice, and grenadine. Garnish with a cherry and a slice of orange. Live a bit on the edge, and don’t order off the menu. Instead, opt for the chef’s special. Mexican Martini – Made from only the finest blue agave and handcrafted in Mexico since 1870, Herradora Silver has a smokey herb flavor with a touch of citrus, and a long rich finish. Mix with Grand Marnier, a premium cognac blend with hints of tropical oranges from the Caribbean, and fine cognac from France. The flavors are joined together with fresh lime and orange juices, and a jalapeño garnish. This martini is the perfect accompaniment to the Grilled Fish Tacos (grilled tilapia marinated in jalapeño, cilantro, and cumin served with pickled cabbage, carrots, red onions, fresh salsa, green sauce, and lime).

Lake scene. I like the way this group takes time for what’s important yet ready for action whenever the bell comes calling and predict that in 2015, Pirate Radio would be an ideal band to play on the big stage at a League City, Walter Hall Park event just not on cowboy night. Cheers to Prime Minister of the Krewe du Lac, Annabelle Ruch, who after 14 years, will be passing over the reigns to spend more time in North Texas with family. Annabelle has been a phenomenal force of nature in this area organizing events such as the original Seabrook Music Festival, the Krewe du Lac events, SCENE Fest and the original Boogie,
KEMAH TOY DRIVE AND PUB CRAWL – Was PACKED with perhaps the largest turnout in the history of this annual Krewe du Lac and SCENE Magazine holiday event. There were LOTS of new faces in this year’s batch of merry mongers to join King Larry Hays and his wife, Queen Betty Hayes. Once again, TBone Tom’s and their fantastic staff did a splendid job hosting the kickoff event without missing a beat. Dang, they’re good! Speaking of beat, Andy and the Dreamsicles, along with their entourage of Parrotloving holiday tropical rockers were cooking things up nicely. A big Happy Birthday to Andy Upchurch for joining the class of local musicians (Hammond, Shannon, McCorquodale and David Schwope to name a few) celebrating their 60th orbit around the Sun – what a strong class of musicians indeed! was stellar and trust that our local live music helped liven things up.
MUSICAL SLEEPER AWARD – Over in the craft brewery department, the boss took me along to check out a local open house complete with gumbo cookoff. I’ll let him tell everybody about the brew and fine eats. For me, these tend to be seriously fun outings and this time out, I was totally hoodwinked catching Raf Rivera playing the acoustic and singing solo – so surprised at first that I had to make him take off his sun glasses to be sure. Over the years, many catch Raf shredding the electric with local groups such as Dev Electric, Hounds of Jezebel, a couple times on stage with Erase the Virus and on lead with The Hunger – All waaaaaaaay over on the high energy end of the spectrum. Yet on this day, there was Raf laying out crisp and articulate acoustic licks on his Taylor and looper, singing with a clarity that could hold its own at any private party or big stage. I had no idea he had this in him. It was such an enjoyable treat! The second treat that afternoon was getting a chance to chat with Raf – often time we cross paths in venues at 95-110 db. Raf filled me in on being a musician from Florida who took root in Clear Lake while on his way to LA. Aside from being quite the busy full-time professional musician, Raf shared his plans for his upcoming wedding at the white chapel in Las Vegas “where all the musicians get married.” You can’t fake a happy smile, folks, and I suspect 2015 will be a good year for this man. Cheers! I’m not sure if we’ll ever see Raf playing at the coffee house or wine bar circuit anytime soon, but hopefully, will get a chance to hear him fly solo again, perhaps at Skallywag down - Continued on Page 41 in the Lighthouse District.
Happy New Year! Hope everybody had a great holiday season and able to enjoy time with family and friends out and about on The SCENE. It was surreal driving around town Christmas Day with all the shops closed and people off the streets – The way it probably should’ve been. Looking ahead, the Andy & The Dreamsicles days are finally getting @ T-bone longer, our hometown Tom’s pro football team complete with a new coach gave us reason to stay tuned in, our pro basketball team is well in the mix this season, and Mardi Gras season lies ahead. As for the live music scene, the month of December blew by “FAST,” and we weren’t able to make it out to as many shows as our norm. Nonetheless, what we were able to take in during December

No monkey’ing around here… Jessica has been a “bartender/therapist” at the Monkey Bar for 9 years now, and has been in the industry a lucky 13 years. The hardworking bartender has two jobs. Jessica says she enjoys her weekend shifts at Monkey Bar because it is how she relaxes. Best thing about the Monkey Bar? The people! “Most of the really good friends I have, I met at Monkey Bar,” she said. “Also, I get to hear everyone's drama, and it makes me think, ’Hey maybe my life isn't so bad sometimes!’” Signature drink: Red Wrong and Strong... It's red. It's wrong. And it's strong... Who doesn't love that? Head over to Monkey Bar and give it a try! Monkey business? No, show business! When asked what reality show Jessica would be on, she replied, “Not really a reality show fan, but I am a game show junkie. I would love to be on Wheel of Fortune (bucket list). I used to think Price is Right, but changed my mind after Bob Barker left, ’Remember to have your pets spayed or neutered.’ Haha, who doesn't love that creepy old man?” Just because it is January… Any New Year’s resolutions? “Quit drinking, quit smoking, spend more time with family and friends, eat healthy, lose weight, help those in need...insert any other clichéd resolution

Total Eclipse of the Heart. Just ask any Monkey Bar regular, I have embarrassed myself with that song more times than I can remember. Singing, dancing, and basically making a fool of myself, but definitely entertaining!” (Jess – this is why the people at Monkey Bar love you!) Is there a life motto you go by? “No motto really; I just always try to stay positive, and not be a Debbie Downer.” What do you do when not at Monkey Bar? “I volunteer to be a drinking buddy for anyone in need! Open Mic Night Calls All Performers For over two years, many local musicians and performers have walked through The Cock & Bull British Pub doors. The newly painted pub continues the tradition every Wednesday night from 7 to 10 p.m. Pub owner Jeanette Walker said since they started open mic night, the weekly event has since gained a big following. “Sometimes it gets really packed, other nights it’s really quiet and intimate. There were times where it was just us and no one came,” Jeanette said. “But we would just keep going. Other times, we can only manage three songs per person.” The range of performers and styles that grace The Cock & Bull British Pub’s stage is broad. “It depends who’s playing, we’ve had one guy do a rock instrumental, a straight up a cappella, island music, the typical John Mayer stuff; it all depends on who comes.”
Expect something new in January, called ‘Entertainer Variety Night,’ geared for the open mic musicians who haven’t yet been able to build up three hours of material. The monthly EnBRITISH PUB & RESTAURANT tertainer Variety Nights will host three musical performers for one hour each, giving them the platform to play to the public on a Friday or Saturday night, showcasing their material, plus earning a little pocket money. Every Wednesday is Open Mic Night at The Cock & Bull British Pub, hosted by Steve Revak.
Jeanette said open mic nights are open to anyone wanting to let their voice be heard. And each performer is fed. “This platform is also for the closet performers and musicians who play in their rooms by themselves with no one to listen to them, or for those haven’t really gotten their moment to shine. Everyone just wants to be able to express themselves and music is hands down one of the best ways to do that. There are a lot of people who got their start here, and the experience has helped them get to get a leg up elsewhere. This is all about providing a place for people to really open up,” said Jeanette. Musician Steve Revak from the group Wood ‘n Wind hosts Open Mic Night at The Cock & Bull British Pub each Wednesday. “If you 3659 NASA Rd. 1 • 832-282-8202 SUN. – MON.: 11AM to 10PM want to step into the music scene, this is TUES. – THURS.: 11AM to MIDNIGHT; FRI. – SAT.: 11AM to 2AM a great opportunity to test out what it feels like to perform and get used to singing with a system — everyone sounds different on the mic,” Steve Revak said. “If you are a musician and well established, it's nice to perform in the intimate space. It's like a stripped down, raw acoustic jam session. And if you're a music lover, you never know what to expect.” Open mic nights are also a way for musicians to try out something different, he added. “Open mics are a great place for performers to experiment with new covers, new sounds or style, or debut originals. You also get to network with other musicians and artists. Even though I host open mics at The Cock & Bull British Pub, I still like visiting other similar events,” Revak said. “It reminds me of what it was like when we first started, and I always leave inspired.”

Come Experience SHERLOCK’S PUB in Clear Lake for the First Time… Again By Rhonda Meredith In late 1999, the Clear Lake area celebrated the opening of Sherlock’s Baker St. Pub, located at 2416 Bay Area Blvd. in the Star Plaza Shopping Center. The neighborhood pub quickly gained a reputation for throwing the biggest parties. Many who attended Sherlock’s third anniversary event are still talking about it today. Here are a few items of note: First, Sherlock’s will be celebrating their 15-year anniversary on Saturday, January 24. Second, Sherlock’s will be serving up crawfish on the patio when the season begins in mid to late January. Check Sherlock’s Facebook page for updates. Last, but not least, Trey White is back as Sherlock’s General Manager. White was at the helm then, and is at the helm now. That means this party is going to rock! “Sherlock’s will be recreating the feel of the legendary third anniversary blast,” White said. The party kicks off at 7 p.m. with numerous drink specials and appetizers. The continuous, revolving entertainment will be provided by some of the Bay Area’s top musicians, including Danny Lopez, Kevin Holmes, David Grace, Erik Garza, and many more. Clear your schedule now, and make sure to attend! “The original concept when Sherlock’s opened was of a neighborhood pub with live cover music and no cover charge,” said White. With a décor modeled after Sherlock Holmes’ study, this venue offers cozy nooks filled with overstuffed leather chairs, seven billiard tables, four true English steel-tipped dart games, air hockey, and foosball. This pub is truly a unique gem amongst entertainment venues. The reason why Sherlock’s has a fun vibe is no mystery. In fact, some may say it is “elementary, my dear Watson.” The pub boasts a very generous happy hour. Enjoy drink specials from 3 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and all day on Sundays. Monday nights host Industry Night with awesome drink specials. - Continued on Page 36

BAY AREA DOMINATES 2014 TEXAS BUZZ MUSIC AWARDS By Rhonda Meredith Late last month the Texas Buzz Awards were presented by 94.5 “The Buzz” radio station at Scout Bar. These awards give recognition to the musical talent Texas has to offer. As The SCENE Magazine and our readers know, the Bay Area is bursting with musical talent… We are proud to offer a big “CONGRATULATIONS!” to all the local bands who received an award. Each nominee was worthy of being a recipient. We encourage our readers to continue to support the local music scene in 2015.

Band of the Year and Best Indie/Punk/ Reggae CASSETTE TAPE: It was a banner year for Cassette Tape culminated by winning these two huge awards. Everything has a beginning. Sometimes the beginning is not a definite date, but more of a cosmic event that transpires over a period of time. What started off as friends just jamming and creating musical fusion became something quite special. And when lyrics were twisted and crunched into the emotive sounds, it was good. It was too good to keep within the four walls of their practice room. Cassette Tape can be described as indescribable. It’s more about the experience, than the genre.
