What You Need To Know Right Now about the Month Of May! By Rhonda Meredith
Holland K. Smith May is a busy month with various unique happenings. Take for example, “May-the-forth be with you” on Star Wars Day (May 4). This issue is chock-full of information on where to get margaritas and fajitas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (May 5.) Definitely show your appreciation for the mother figures in your life on Mother’s Day (May 10.) Every day should be National Waiter and Waitress Day (May 21) because they are on the frontlines of customer service and making your dining experiences memorable ones. Memorial Day (May 25) is a solemn reminder to recognize those in the military who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Honoring the first American woman to fly in space is Sally Ride Day (May 26). And World No Tobacco Day (May 31) can be commemorated with the use of a tobacco-less e-cig.
Mambo Jazz Kings Fri., May 8 JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
May is also Mental Health Month. What better way to get into the right frame of mind than to catch some live music entertainment? It’s good for the mind, body, and spirit. Make sure you check out a show! Here is a sampling of who is performing where: Noah’s Ark (4438 Boulevard, Bacliff) is hosting Dave Nevling in their Parrots Nest – a “miniMargaritaville” – on Saturday, May 9. Nevling will be performing the blues “his own way.” The Parrots Nest (their upstairs Palapa bar for the 21-and-over crowd) boasts a stage, a dance floor, a large seating area, and a full-service bar.
Sheila Marshall Band Sun., May 10 T-BONE TOM’S
Grab your grass skirt or favorite Hawaiian shirt for a Luau Party at T-Bone Tom’s (707 Hwy. 146, Kemah) Saturday May 16. The Dreamsicles will be performing from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Tom’s Backyard. From 6 to 11 p.m. this same night, offer your best wishes and farewell to T-Bone Tom’s long-time General Manager Anna Kennedy at her retirement party with The Navigators performing. Dean Seltzer describes his music as "high energy, obnoxious, redneck rock 'n roll." Those at Jackie’s Brickhouse just say it’s a damn fun night. Make plans to attend his show on Thursday, May 21. The venue is known for hosting benefits and has two on the calendar this month. On Saturday, May 9 is the benefit for Carla’s Crusade, and on Saturday, May 30 is the Texas Equusearch fundraiser. - Continued on Page 44

Spring Is In Full Swing At MAINLY DRINKS By Rhonda Meredith Spring is a time of revitalization, rejuvenation, and it is in full swing at Mainly Drinks, located at 223 West Main Street in La Porte’s historic Sharp building. Owner Deb Gallington and staff have been hard at work spring cleaning and sprucing up the interior with fresh paint and contemporary flooring.
of wine and beer with complimentary wine and beer tastings. The tastings begin at 5 p.m. and typically include two white wines, two red wines, and two beers. But the choices may include Gallington’s “new favorites” or even a seasonal kind. Also, there is a 10% discount on the “tasting bottles” if purchased the same night, this is in addition to the everyday 15% discount for retail purchases. Please note that an RSVP is a must for this event.
And in the kitchen, Mainly Drinks’ Executive Chef Jarrett Branch introduces a bold Southwestern-inspired menu just in time for this new season. Enjoy the Blue Corn Crusted Mahi or opt for a gluten-free dish such as the Pepper Jack Chicken Pasta. Gallington offers this warning in advance, “Yes, you can find your old favorite, but be prepared to find a new one, too!”
Besides alcoholic beverages, Mainly Drinks offers ultra-premium coffees roasted in small batches by a local roaster. The coffee is delicious and prepared to order. Also available are loose-leaf teas from Chai to Earl Grey to flavored greens to complement the coffee for those days when a perfectly brewed cup of tea sounds right. Relax in the pet-friendly courtyard under the umbrellas and enjoy the delightful breeze.
Since opening their doors as a coffee and wine bar in August 2011, Mainly Drinks has grown beyond “just drinks” to offer a complete lunch and dinner menu, live musical entertainment, and an art gallery hosting the works of local artists on a rotating basis.
Mainly Drinks can host events on their second floor, dubbed “The Loft.” Private parties for up to 40 people are welcomed. Call 281-867-1700 for more information or to reserve for a wine-tasting event. Gallington suggests an RSVP on weekend dining, too.
Lunch is served beginning at 11 a.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. No matter the season, the live music is blooming at Mainly Drinks. The venue showcases local music on Thursday nights with Keith Adams beginning at 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday nights from 8 to 11 p.m. There is an intimate feel between the musicians, artists, and patrons that one can only experience at Mainly Drinks. The walls are adorned with wine bottles and local artists’ works from Art Walk by the Bay. “We are unique in many ways and one of those unique features is our ‘wall of wine’ which holds 756 bottles,” Gallington said. “We also have temperaturecontrolled storage for another 400 bottles.” The large and eclectic selection of wines can be purchased by the glass, the bottle, or to take home. Gallington and her staff can assist in finding the perfect wine for guests. Inquire about the more than 60 varieties of craft and micro-brewed beers not easily found anywhere else. They offer non-alcoholic beers as well. Mainly Drinks offers reasonably priced craft beer and an extensive national and international wine selection. “No one beats our prices,” said Gallington. Every Thursday, Gallington invites guests to explore the world

Greetings good people! March Madness is out of the way; the Astros appear to have bounced off the bottom; and the Rockets are continually climbing ever higher which leaves us perfectly poised for the merry month of May and fun in the sun. There have been lots of good things happening out and about in the area and plenty more ahead. When your party is looking for something to do, be the hero and do what I do: Grab a copy of The SCENE for a rundown on all that’s going down in our area. Speaking of which, here’s a quick report of what happened in April…
Coming together in 2013, and hitting the SCENE in 2014, this tight and powerful garage band on steroids carries a stage presence ideal for fundraisers, outdoor festivals, biker rallies and good, old fashioned partying fun. Contact Kim at roxxkravenn@yahoo.com or call 281-889-1373 for booking.
BACK ON THE BEAT is Hugh & Jeff’s Fuel Bar. The 646 road expansion has finally cleared up, and getting to this League City outpost is now a snap. Inside, they’ve opened up a cavernous party area, added a food menu (which looked party perfect) and rearranged the music stage. This evening, we caught Roxx Kraven for the first time. This League City Rock/Classic Rock band featured Shawn Pritchard (Lead Vocals), Dave Smith (Guitar/vocals), Blu Davis – (Bass/ vocals) and Roland Orizaga from Southbound 45 sitting in for Justin Benson and rocking on the drums.
“STARTED A CLUB ONE DAY, AND HERE WE ARE.” – Could possibly be the bio for Scout Bar celebrating their 11th anniversary in April. The The Hunger @ lineup joining The Scout Bar Hunger that evening included The Last Place You Look, Cassette Tape and Valeluna. We arrived late that evening and missed out catching Cassette Tape with their new guitar player, Mark Lum, bringing in his Florida style to this award winning Made In Texas, Gulf Coast, Experimental Reggae, Rock band – Rain check, please? - Continued on Page 46

The 2015 season of the Wednesday Night Sailboat Races have begun and, for the most part, Mother Nature has cooperated with some spectacular weather for the area’s most beautiful spectator sport. And The SCENE Sailing Team has started the season with the same momentum they finished the last two class (J/24) championship seasons. Captain Stuart Lindow and the team competed in four of the five races to date finishing first in three and second in one, good for holding on to the top spot.

Above L-R: Mikey Garcia (drums), Richard Sherwood (guitar), Kevin Pool (bass) and Nava (vocals) of The Last Place You Look would do it, but I think you may get an idea what the Wilson brothers and this present Hunger lineup is up to… I’ll say it again, “Brilliant!”
The Hunger @ Scout Bar
I need to give quick mention to check out Punkstar Full Throttle Broadcast, (punkstartradio.com) a 24/7 Internet radio station featuring local music with an increasing number of nationals thrown in for good measure. Each Wednesday night at Scout Bar, Chris Calderas and Khris Harding have created an entertaining live broadcast show, where you can be a part of the studio audience – Pretty cool, eh? Whether you’re a music lover who wants to hear the hottest local and regional bands or just in the mood for your neighborhood garage bands, you’ve found the right place to come hang out. For more information contact roland@punkstarindustries.com. More to come…
The Last Place You Look startled me for a while, not immediately recognizing guitarist Richard Sherwood joining Nava in sporting their James Harden style beards. This evening, The Hunger simply smoked it. Matt Solo (From Guts to Glory, bassist) was on board as Darren Nelson is busy starring in his new role as Big Daddy. Tim Huston was back on stage delivering a “take no prisoner” performance on the guitar. I’ve been watching Ben Bordelon on keys for a few shows now. For a while, I felt Ben’s addition was a smart move freeing up both Jeff and Thomas to focus on dueling front man roles and after this show, changing my thought from “smart” to “brilliant.” Together, the Wilson brothers provide what few bands can, a tag team, hard-hitting, inyour-face barrage. Not exactly like how Mick Jagger and Tina Turner

Above: The Hollisters | Right: Kelly McGuire (both at T-bone Tom’s) 42 YEARS – If you’ve ever been to TBone Tom’s and had a good time, considerable accolades avail themselves to the entire staff. May 16 will be the retirement party for T-Bone’s General Manager and SCENE favorite Anna Kennedy who will be retiring after 42 years of service, which in this day an age is a jewel of an accomplishment, yes? The Navigators will be playing that night which is perfect for this occasion. Everyone is invited, so come out and help give Anna a terrific retirement sendoff. Last month, T-Bone Tom’s was packed each time we dropped by. In spite of heavy rains, The Hollisters (Mike Barfield Eric Danheim Denny Blakely {local music teacher at Danny D’s} and Kevin Fitzpatrick) played up their downto-Earth Americana-style of country swing to a capacity audience which would not have been possible before the days of the huge palapa. Also in April, we caught the Kelly McGuire Band before he embarked on his coast-to-coast nationwide tour. Word is the release date for his new album will be around mid-May which should be in time for the majority of the waterfront season this year. Can’t wait!

OPEN MIC – Scheduling has kept me away from these favorite events, but I got a break in April to check out the Open Mic at The Cock & Bull hosted by Steve Revak Open Mic at with Wood & Cock & Bull Wind. The musicians this month were all-new to me covering some sweet Simon & Garfunkel, several ballads of
the Castilian genre, a few originals that have played as actual movie scores, and a few splashes of Broadway piano. This vast range of music all together in one location at the same time made for a sweet concoction to my ears qualifying The Cock & Bull – along with their full bar and menu – as a great secret Wednesday night get away. - Continued on Page 35

Tens of thousands of beer beginners, beer enthusiasts and beer geeks toast the week each year. In 2014, more than 60,000 beer lovers across all 50 states were also part of the ACBW Facebook Community. DeFalco’s opens second store in Bay Area to quench demand DeFalco's opened its doors in the Rice University Village in June of 1971 in the wake of a home wine-making boom. The original proprietor, Frank DeFalco, had an uncle, Dom DeFalco, who had opened a similar establishment in Ottawa, Ontario, a few years earlier. Frank leaned on his uncle for advice. The opening was delayed pending clarification from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission regarding winemaking’s legality in the Lone Star State. Homebrewing was not even addressed as this was technically illegal nationwide since the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.
the time was that the customer was merely producing "sparkling barley wine." By that summer, Scott became a full-timer, and Senator Alan Cranston introduced a bill in the U.S. Senate to legalize homebrewing. Thankfully, this passed with minimal opposition. President Carter signed the bill. Therefore, in February 1979, it was legal to make your own beer in the U.S. (sort of). Unfortunately, this law only removed the federal restrictions on homebrewing. Each individual state could prohibit the practice, if it was so inclined. Homebrewing wasn't legalized in Texas until 1983 – but, this is a story for another day!
In 1980, the shop was compelled to move from its original location on University Boulevard to Morningside, just around the corner. Later that same year, Frank DeFalco and his silent partner sold the shop to Birdwell, by then, he had moved up the ranks to store manager. Good news came again five years later when The GingerHouston’s Brewing Source Since 1971 man opened up next Clear Lake Events: Clear Lake Store door, and a symbiotic May 2: Pros vs Joes 16532 Sea Lark relationship was National Homebrew Day Houston, TX 77062 born!Facing rent that Big Brew In & Contest 281-486-1141 May 17: Homebrew was to be tripled, the Seminar (4-8pm) shop moved once Houston Store Space is limited! In March 1978, Scott Birdwell was hired as a part-time employee and was the company's first "beer expert" (after two successful batches). DeFalco's carried homebrewing supplies even though, technically, the customer could not legally make beer with them. The standard line at

wanted to double the rent. It was at this point the shop moved out of the fashionable and high-priced Rice Village to Stella Link. After 11 years at 8715 Stella Link, DeFalco’s moved to their current location 9223 Stella Link in January 2012. With the popularity of home wine and beer making, the shop was compelled to expand, and the new location enabled them to nearly triple their square footage. Needless to say, DeFalco’s has grown quite comfortably at this location. After years of hearing from their “southern” customers regarding the need for a full line shop in the Bay Area, in 2014 DeFalco’s opened a second location at 16532 Sea Lark, Houston (just catty-corner from Molly’s Pub). With a wide selection of wine, beer, mead and cider making ingredients and equipment, DeFalco’s hopes to give those customers what they have been wanting. The store manager for the Clear Lake Location is Andy Barnard, a resident of the area. If you think that making wine, beer, cider, mead or cheese sounds like fun (It is!), then stop by either location, take a look around, and say, “Hi!” You’ll find an abundance of malt extract, grains, hops, yeast, winemaking ingredient kits, and equipment of all kinds. DeFalco’s also serves as the meeting site for The Foam Rangers and Space City Spargers Homebrew Clubs, as well as the Houston Home Vintner’s Winemaking Club. This is a great hobby, head over and join the fun!

What do you love about Mamacita's? I can honestly say, it’s the people I get to know daily. I am constantly meeting different personalities and cultures, and I like that a lot. THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE calendar. These folks do very important work that doesn’t come cheap. Their fundraiser needs to be huge. See you there!
LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 45 Velcro Pygmies @ Jackie’s Brickhouse
THURSDAY NIGHTS – I’ve been noticing an interesting pattern over the past few months of Thursday evenings, which typically is a quiet night before the weekend. It seems that the good folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse have broken this pattern, ignoring the night of rest, and packing the house with notables such as Rat Ranch, Luther and the Healers, Hamilton Loomis, and last month, the Velcro Pygmies. I’ve got to admit that I’ve never seen the Pygmies before and had no idea what to expect. BOY, WHAT A BLAST! Their fans call themselves Pyg-Heads; they’re hometown is Louisville (Kentucky); they play 200 shows a year; pack two stories of lights (cameras love lights); haul in a good, old-fashioned wall of sound. Their website uses the words, “Loud, fast, larger than life, and in your face. Big hair, big lights, big sound.” My words: “Crazy good time!!!” Hey, heads up, friends – Jackie’s Brickhouse has a fundraiser coming up for Texas Equusearch on May 30, so mark your
OVER THE TOP – I usually give this mention out to a particularly good live music event. One of my favorite annual events is the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Epicurean Evening – Cozy environment, fine foods galore, glamorous setting. Inverse to that is another one of my favorites, the Gritty Goddess obstacle run in Galveston. Watching humanity tromp through mud, negotiate obstacles, overcome challenges, and help one another is simply good, clean fun. I’ve got to confess that while I like the first event plenty, it’s the second of the two that strikes me profoundly. You would think this event gets old year in and year out, but witnessing women coming together for a greater cause and watching them throughout the course, some Gritty Goddess (more pics on page 20) stronger than others, the others gaining confidence along the way, all facing uncertainties, and each celebrating one another. In the end, this never gets old. Every time I cover this event, I tromp through tall weeds and slosh through mud, lugging along a camera and a huge lens for “that angle” to catch fleeting glimpses and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Why? I’ve gotten to witness over and over the human spirits with strangers pitching in, and supporting each other with a multitude of individual triumphs summed into a collective win for all. Well done to all the Gritty Goddesses, past, present and future, wherever you may be. Cheers! IT’S A WRAP – Great food? Check. Good live music? Check and double check. Fun times with good people? Check, check and check! Folks, we’ve had a great run in April and looking ahead, there’s a lot more lying ahead. Aside from some great local live music happenings, there will be some pretty important fundraisers for very important causes worth checking out and supporting. Okay? Be sure and keep a copy of THE SCENE handy in your car, on your coffee table, on your phone/tablet and we will see you out there on The SCENE!

LAKEWOOD’S SHOE REGATTA: MAY 16-17 Lakewood Yacht Club’s Race Committee Chairman Larry Rogers has announced that Serralles is the naming sponsor of the 33rd Annual Shoe Regatta. To be held over the weekend of May 16-17, Lakewood hosted the first Shoe Regatta in 1982 which was originally sponsored by Foley’s Department Store and Sperry TopSider Shoes. Bay Access, a not-for-profit organization that supports amateur racing, is the organizing authority of the races. The Shoe Regatta, which is open to the public and raced on Galveston Bay, is a favorite among local racers because, in the past, each crew member of the winning boat in each class was awarded a certificate for a pair of Sperry deck shoes; hence, the name of the Regatta.

LAKEWOOD SOUTH DESTINATION REOPENS Lakewood South Chairman Scott Covington is pleased to announce that Lakewood South has reopened for members as LYC-Bayhouse South. The goal with the new name is to have fun toys for children and adults to utilize as if it were their own bay house on the Offat’s Bayou. There are 14 slips for boats and almost unlimited parking for cars along with three spaces for motorhomes. Members and their guests can launch small boats from the dock, play on the water all day, then take a shower in the bath house before going into Galveston for dinner. Destroyed during Hurricane Ike in 2008, Lakewood South, a former bait camp, was purchased by Lakewood in the mid 1980s to be used as a destination point for weekend boating members. It is about an acre of property on Teichman Road. right on Offat’s Bayou. Numerous parties and gatherings have been enjoyed there by members on holiday weekends through the years. “We finally have it all completed to the point that the only thing members need to bring to the site is what they want to eat and drink,” explained Covington. The elevated bath house is air-conditioned and has a deck with a beautiful view of Offat’s Bayou. Covington also related that the storage room under the bath house is completed, there are new bar-b-que pits under the pavilion, and there is ice on site similar to Lakewood’s fuel dock back in Seabrook. “It’s an even better and more attractive destination point by car or water than it was before Hurricane Ike,” Lakewood South Vice-Chair Duane Guidry added.

The Cock and Bull:
Special occasions call for special menus at the pub. On Mother's Day, we will be serving a special menu with many of our customers favorites as well as some special items created just for that day! Lunch is becoming more popular since we made some changes to that menu as well.
Continued From Page 10 American cuisine is also offered in the form of a Deluxe Triple Decker BLT; burgers; and a meatball sandwich – just to name a few. The Kid’s Menu goes up to age 14 and is sure to please even the pickiest eater. Choices include a fish po-boy on a hoagie roll, a mini shepherd’s pie, sweet chili ribs, The Cock & Bull Meatballs, chicken tenders, and mac-N-cheese. The dinner menu is available well into the night offering new menu items such as the London Tower Burger (fresh ground beef grilled to perfection and topped with sautéed onions, pepper jack cheese, HP sauce and a butterflied banger sausage). On Sundays, The Cock & Bull prepares a “True Brit Brunch” that is served until 4 p.m. The menu includes breakfast items such as Eggs Benedict (toasted English muffin topped with spinach, grilled ham, poached eggs, holandaise sauce), waffles and the Queen’s Omelet (made with spinach and cheese). Enjoy the atmosphere, the food, and the beverages. The Cock & Bull boasts 17 beers on tap (five of which are British: Boddington’s Pub Ale, Guinness, Murphy’s Irish Stout, Fuller's London Pride, and a pear cider) and a few local favorites such as Galactic Coast, Galveston Bay and Southern Star. The brand selection and flavors that lovingly flow from the tap will vary. Just know that once a specialty beer has “tapped” out, it’s gone and another brilliant brew will take its place. More than 40 bottled craft beers are also available for your imbibing pleasure. As the beer offerings change on a frequent basis, so does the wine – and plenty of unique and satisfying tastes are in stock. Since opening in early 2012, The Cock & Bull British Pub has welcomed patrons into the pub’s fun and distinctly British atmos-

phere. The dark wooden bar, a rich red theme, and an eclectic mix of just about everything the British culture represents parlayed into an overall comfortable and interesting setting complete with a large full-service bar area, a dining area, a dart room, and a library lounge. Each room has an individual personality that’s fit for a king, the common man, and even Lord WentWorth. (Check him out as you walk in. He loves to pose for pictures!) The Cock and Bull hosts many cool events to break up the workweek. Check out their ad in this issue of The SCENE Magazine. The pub opens at 11 a.m. every day. For added convenience, complimentary valet service is available on many weekday evenings and weekend evenings. Come have a jolly good time at The Cock and Bull British Pub and Restaurant. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --
Chef Valarie Gauntt: Continued From Page 17 Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous? Yes, I have had the honor to cook many meals for Jane Robelot (former co-anchor of the CBS morning news) and her husband Mario and son George. I also cooked several meals at their home for Erik Haney (author of Inside Delta Force and Beyond Shock and Awe) and his wife when they were visiting. Cooking for Jane, Mario and George brought me back to my grandmother’s kitchen – and what she taught me. Is there anything new/exciting going on with food at the pub? YES! We have made some great changes on all of our menus. We have added grilled pork chops that have quickly become one of our top sellers, and a Pesto Chicken Pasta Dish with our scratch-made Pecan Pesto sauce. Our monthly Wine and Dine dinners are always a lot of fun.

Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Make it your own! Adapt a dish to suit your taste. If you go out and have an amazing dish at a restaurant, and you really want to make it at home, don't be scared to try it! If it has ingredients that you are not sure about, or there was just a little part that you thought might be better if you used something else that you are familiar with – DO IT. Replace those ingredients with things you are comfortable with. If you are not sure about cooking fish (which can be scary for some folks) replace it with chicken, and make the dish your own! Cooking should be fun! When not at the pub: Chef Valarie enjoys spending time with her husband of 17 years and their two children Debra and Sam. A recent personal achievement for Chef Valarie was attempting the MR 340 in a canoe with her husband two summers ago. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --
Chef Jarrett Branch: Continued From Page 17 Though it’s thought that chefs have considerable ego, but what isn’t always said is that they are great teachers, and I’m looking forward to more teachers. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: Use your imagination. Envision in your mind what the food tastes like before you make it. Anything that helps in building your palate helps develop you into a better chef.

Featured Artist: Eleanor Suss
By Kelley Dawson
Having just celebrated her 95th birthday, Eleanor Suss’s extraordinary life brims with art and travel. The local artist claims she was born with a natural gift which she noticed since she was a little girl in elementary school. Suss said, “We studied writing as a subject each week. During the handwriting assignments, I look back at what I wrote with an unusual angle, an artistic slant.” Soon Suss’s pen progressed to paint brush; starting with water color paintings. She expressed, “Water color flowers look the best. The translucent color you get that other mediums can’t produce.” Suss said she also enjoys looking back into historic times from cave drawings to 18th century architecture and recreating that history with water color and detailed pen and ink sketches. During World War II, Suss joined the Woman’s Army Corp. She served as a chauffeur. “Which is fine, though not in the fray, I was still part of the team,” she stated. Suss disclosed she chauffeured Army officials to areas such as Prisoner of War camps not often seen or visited by most folks. When Suss left the service, she had earned the rank of Lieutenant. Suss’s acceptance to the prestigious Parson’s School of Design in New York City followed her Army service. Through the design program, she completed her graduate studies in France and Italy. While in France, Suss scored a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sketch Josephine Bonaparte’s boudoir in The Chateau de Malmaison. Suss revealed she had Josephine’s bedroom to herself to sketch and paint. “‘Josephine’s Boudoir’ is the most valuable of my collection,” said Suss. Other of her works in France and Italy included local street and canal scenes and the architecture. Many of Suss’s water colors and sketches appear as vignette style offering a glimpse of life and unique structures abroad. The vignettes capture amazing details. They are also reminiscent of images found in classic story books where the picture tells the reader as much of the story as the words in the book surrounding it. Suss continued her sketches and study of architecture back in the States while living in Washington, DC; often sketching charming Georgetown homes. Never one to stifle her growth as an artist, Suss broadened her perspective by remaining well-travelled across the States and to places such as China and Russia. Suss shared her generous nature and told of her many contributions to embassies, senior centers, garden and country clubs as well as to other artists. She said she was particularly proud of her Portland lighthouse water color chosen to hang in the newly renovated United Way of Houston building. Suss admitted she painted the light house in Maine during a storm “to capture the feel of it.” Suss recounts her artistic tales and world travels in her book ‘Art & Travel - The Time of My Life.’ In it she states, “My life has grown with appreciation of details, of people, and of nature.” See more of Suss’s paintings May 16 from 11 am to 3 pm at the International Signature Bistro Art Show. Some proceeds will go to women veterans of WWII. Her works are available at Seaside Gallery & Picture Framing and The Treasure Chest or visit www.facebook.com/pages/MsEleanorSuss/1576412945930697

“The annual GHF Historic homes tour is our way of welcoming guests into our historic homes and exchanging the stories of our past. Each year we feature houses that reflect our diverse architectural heritage but also relate the interesting stories of who lived here and made Galveston home” says Dwayne Jones, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Executive Director. “The tour is a vital part of our community and brings visitors from around the country who love Galveston’s architecture. Many visitors come back to vacation or purchase houses that further the preservation of our island.”
The yearly events have quickly become an annual must have for homes tour guests. For those looking for fine dining options, the History on Tap dinners give guests the opportunity to enjoy specially created meals in two tour homes starting with the 1909 Fordtran-Viotto House on Friday, May 1 and the 1856/1889 John H. and Minnie Knox Hutching’s Home, the 2015 cover home, on Friday, May 9. Finally, the 1880 Garten Verein will host a special Mother’s Day brunch complete with corsages, live jazz trio and brunch on Sunday, May 10th. camole).
Virtually all the dishes are made from scratch such as the salsa, guacamole, and tortillas. Some of the signature dishes on the menu are the Avocado Adobe (half an avocado stuffed with cheese and your choice of ground beef or chicken, or grilled chicken, steak, or shrimp, then lightly battered and deep-fried, and topped with a ranchero sauce. Served with rice, and choice of refried or borracho beans); or the Chicken or Shrimp Bravo (marinated chicken breast or shrimp stuffed with jalapeños and Monterey jack cheese, wrapped in bacon, and coated with a sweet teriyaki glaze, and served with rice, beans, pico de gallo, and guacamole); or the sizzling fajitas. For those wanting to taste of each type of fajita, then it is best to choose the Fajita Sampler (marinated fajita beef, grilled chicken, jalapeño sausage, grilled shrimp and three of their popular Shrimp Bravo served with tortillas, rice, beans and fajita toppings). For a lighter fare, Café Adobe offers lighter dishes: the Blueberry Salad and the Mayan Shrimp (jumbo shrimp sautéed and served with stir fried vegetables, rice, beans, pico de gallo and gua-
Café Adobe opens every day at 11 a.m. Brunch favorites can be ordered daily, too, so you don’t have to miss your breakfast foods such as the Taquitos (breakfast tacos made with freshly scrambled eggs and choice of bacon, sausage, cheese, beans, potatoes, onions, mushrooms, bell peppers and jalapeños). Cafe Adobe has been voted Houston's best Mexican food, best margarita, and more! Go see why Café Adobe has been a Houston Tex-Mex favorite for more than 30 years. The Cock and Bull British Pub and Restaurant 3659 NASA Pkwy, Seabrook • 832-282-8202 Experience: I have been cooking professionally for people in one way or another for more than 25 years – in professional kitchens and in family homes. Your Specialty: Comfort foods! I was raised in the south just down the road in Danbury, Texas, and learned to cook from my grandmother. She taught me that anytime you can cook for others, you cook with love, and no matter what you cook, it is special. Every time I get in the kitchen, even the big professional ones, I remember what she taught me. That is one reason why I was drawn to The Cock and Bull, it is a scratch cooking kitchen. If you can create the dishes from scratch, you are making it more special. I take great pride in choosing fresh produce and other quality products to insure that my staff and I can create amazing dishes. We buy only the freshest produce and we even get our meat ground fresh just for us to make our amazing burgers and meatloaf. - Continued on Page 26

Mainly Drinks: 223 West Main Street, La Porte • 281-867-1700 Experience: I have had a swift ride in the career field. I started my “official” journey in 2012 which I attended Culinary School at Galveston College. From that point on, I haven’t been able to stop. I quickly started working at a major hotel and spa on the [Galveston] Island under the tutelage of some great chefs. I found my home here at Mainly Drinks in January of 2014. Your Specialty: My specialty is working with Southwest flavors. Bold, flavorful food, that is simple and to the point. Most importantly, it tastes great! Signature Dish: I am very proud of all the dishes on our new Mainly Drinks menu. Each one makes a statement for our love of food here. The Blue Corn Crusted Mahi is my favorite. It allows the customer to see what Mainly Drinks has really become. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Not yet. I’ve always said that I wanted to compete on Iron Chef America and lose to Bobby Flay; that still rings true! - Continued on Page 26

ANNA KENNEDY: from Page 14 She expressed looking forward to her new home build on 105 acres in Leon County and traveling the United States coast to coast. Kennedy laughed, “I might even check out other restaurants on ‘Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives’ like other retired people do.” She shared, “It’s time to retire while I’m young enough to enjoy it.” (Though according to Terrell, Kennedy said she was way too young to be retiring, but she was going to bite the bullet and do it anyway.)

Kennedy said she will miss the camaraderie with the staff and the locals who know her well. “I know most of the regulars by name or at least by what they eat,” she admitted. T-BONE TOM’S GM TO RETIRE AFTER 42 YEARS THERE “A special breed of people like to serve the public. I was made for it, because I enjoy it.” Anna Kennedy has worked at T-Bone Tom’s since 1973 when it was just a neighborhood meat market. Kennedy said she and then-owner, Leonard Fitzmorris regularly bantered back and forth over how she didn’t want her whole chickens cut up; because she didn’t always know how she was going to cook them. Finally, Fitzmorris proposed, “Well, if you know how to cut up a chicken, you need to come work with me.” Kennedy started as a parttimer. “They had me do a little of everything,” she said. “It gave me something to do while my husband was away,” she added. Since, at that time she had young children and her husband worked as a Harbor Master. In 1974, Fitzmorris’ son, Tom, purchased the meat market. Kennedy remained an employee and she prepared prepackaged sides and wrapped meats to go. T-Bone’s transformation into a restaurant occurred in 1983 after Hurricane Alicia. In the 1990s, Kennedy became the restaurant’s day manager. With the passing of “T-Bone” Tom in 1997, Kennedy took on the role of general manager. “I’ve seen the restaurant change a lot. It’s been a great ride.” she said. In 1999 current owners Barry and Melissa Terrell purchased the restaurant. Kennedy, excited that Terrell was “a restaurant guy,” joked with the staff, “We’ll keep him.” Kennedy said she and Terrell learned a great deal from each other. Kennedy revealed, “[The Terrells] didn’t want to rock the boat. They were a God-send after Tom’s passing.” One thing that didn’t change for Kennedy was how flexible the owners were in regards to her and her family. She disclosed, “It’s why I’ve stayed so long.” Barry Terrell stated, “In the restaurant business, it’s hard to find anyone who has worked that long in the same place.” Kennedy explained, “A special breed of people like to serve the public. I was made for it, because I enjoy it.” Plus, as Kennedy explained, the owners were “very kind and generous to everybody not just me.” Kennedy shared she will not miss the “hustle and bustle of crazy busy days.”

The public is invited to Anna Kennedy’s Retirement Party at T-Bone Tom’s Saturday, May 16 from 6 pm to 11 pm. Music entertainment provided by The Navigators. Anna has been a pleasure to work with...she is very knowledgeable about the restaurant business, from booking the bands to ordering food..we are truly gonna miss her. - Barry Terrell, T-bone Tom’s Owner Anna, helped us and supported us for many years, she is one of the best managers we have worked with. It is because of her that I married the love of my life. "Without Anna there would not be a Wood 'n Wind". Though she doesn't know it, she is the one that facilitated our relationship.” - Steve Revak, Wood & Wind Whenever customers would ask Anna if she owned TBone Tom's, she'd laugh and tell them, "No, but [the owners] let me act like I do." And that's one of the most awesome things about Anna. She takes ownership. She cares about T-Bone Tom's just as much as we do. And that's why we never worried any time we were gone. We knew that Anna had our back. - Melissa Terrell, T-bone Tom’s Owner One of my favorite memories about Anna is her telling me the story about meeting her now husband (Kenneth Kennedy) many years ago, and how they ended up together so many years later and got married. It is truly a touching story. - Mindy Jackson, T-bone Tom’s Management Anna is the go-to gal for the history of building the Kemah bridge. She was there since Tom was at the helm and they grew from a meat market to the place we love today. - Annabelle Ruch, Krewe du Lac Founder I'm gonna miss Anna's shrimp salad at Christmas time. I’m not going to miss her calling me early almost every morning or saying ‘Yall will miss me when I am gone.’ - Bruce Cote, T-bone Tom’s Management

BULL BRITISH PUB
Where Every Family Is Treated Like Royalty By Rhonda Meredith There is news and then there is news you can use. For example, Buckingham Palace is all-abuzz about Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge welcoming their second child soon… Congratulations! And in Seabrook, The Cock & Bull British Pub now has baby chairs. So bring the entire family for a bite of American cuisine or an authentic British lunch or dinner today! See what I mean? At The Cock & Bull British Pub, located at 3659 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, every family is treated like royalty. “This is ‘fun’ dining, not ‘fine’ dining,” assured the Cock and Bull’s owners David and Jeanette Walker. Lunch is served daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The menu includes bacon wrapped meatloaf served with mash and sautéed spinach, ham and cheese quiche served with a tossed salad and spinach strawberry salad with bacon, blue cheese and balsamic vinaigrette. Chef Valarie Gauntt is excited at the response to The Cock & Bull’s updated menus, “Our Paddy’s Grilled Bone-in Pork Chops have quickly become customer favorites!” The delectable menu features British culinary favorites like Steak & Mushroom Pie (succulent cuts of beef in a delicate gravy alongside their famous mashers and mixed veggies); Fish and Chips (signature battered cod served up with fries and peas); Shepherd’s Pie (sautéed ground beef and vegetables and gravy topped with their cheddar mash); and Belfast Bangers and Mash (pork bangerssausage-with sautéed onions on mash, gravy, and baked beans). - Continued on Page 26

Major Milestones Achieved!
alveston County’s Oldest Brewery has enjoyed some huge behind-the-scenes developments so far in 2015. We launched this brewery with a unique controlled-growth plan that was based on paying for expansion as we earned it (selling kegs) and by leveraging hard work, enthusiasm, creativity and revolutionary thinking to avoid debt, banks or losing control to investors. So growth has been slow while unsolicited demand remained far ahead of supply. But thanks to your rocKet riDe continued support, the situation is quickly changing. Late brown Ale • 7.6% AbV last year we increased the "square-footage" of our brewery three-fold. And last month we installed four new beautiful stainless steel brite tanks increasing our conditioning capacity by 300%. We also completed the engineering, construction and testing of our new GCB-built brewhouse which will soon be a “game changer” in our pursuit of fulfilling unsolicited demand and will allow us to pursue additional business for the first time since opening. So stay tuned as our small, local brewery (business) picks up speed – including launching new beers SneAKY blonDe and touching down at new venues this month – all in the Pale Ale • 7.1% AbV pursuit of our "out-of-this-world" ambitions. Cheers and God bless the independent spirit of Texas Craft Brew!
