Cover Story Satisfy your Seafood Cravings at CRAZY ALAN’S SWAMP SHACK By Rhonda Meredith For more than five years, those crazy Cajun cousins Boudreaux and Thibodeaux at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack have been offering mouth-watering dishes fresh from the swamp. Order in from their extensive menu and stay awhile; or enjoy the convenience of their new drive-through and pick-up window. The Swamp Shack, as it’s affectionately known, is located in Kemah at 310 Texas Avenue at the base of the Kemah Bridge. It has a laid back and casual atmosphere. The vibe is festive, fun and family friendly. Anywhere is a good seat in the house. There is even a rooftop deck with a killer view. Say “yum-mee” to the “All-You-Can-Eat Shrimp and Catfish Dinner” offered Monday through Thursday for $16.95; and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for $19.95. The dinner is served with hush puppies and fries. Channel your inner Cajun and savor the delectable flavors along with a cold beverage. Or opt for a “Swamp Snack” at the Swamp Shack and taste some of Crazy Alan’s favorite starters such as the “Swamp Shack Sampler.” The “Smoked Oyster Swamp Shack” is a favorite among customers, too. It’s hard to resist these flavors: smoked Parmesan, smoked Ponchatrain, smoked mango salsa, smoked Mexican jalapeño, and

smoked pico. Anytime is the right time for a bowl of gumbo, Crab Corn Bisque, or Homemade Swamp Chili. The Louisiana Swamp Gumbo comes in either sausage and chicken, or shrimp and crab. Both are filled with swamp veggies and secret spices in a dark brown roux. The restaurant’s boiling pot has runneth over as well as shrimp, lobsters, and “swamp spiders ” – that’s “crabs” for you non-Cajuns.) The Swamp Shack’s reasonably priced “Da’ Main Korse” dinner menu features many great options that are made fresh in the kitchen: jambalaya with “anduuwee” sausage, shrimp, chicken, catfish, rib eye steak, alligator, and more. - Continued on Page 12

CRAZY ALAN’S: From Page 10 John

The Trout Medallion (two trout filets blackened and wrapped around Cajun stuffing, topped with six blackened shrimp and Ponchatrain sauce) will hook you at the first bite. Can’t decide on just one entrée? No problem. The Swamp Shack offers Cajun platters and the Swamp King Surf & Turf. Hamburgers are homemade, out-of-the-ordinary with patties mixed with alligator or crawfish tail meat, if so desired. The triple meat (1-pound patty each) SASQUATCH burger is downright a legend in these parts.

“Dine Out to Donate” The Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) announced that it will host its second annual “Dine Out to Donate” event on Monday, Sept. 21. Already, 28 area restaurants signed up to participate, with the number increasing each day. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their Sept. 21 revenue to CCEF to benefit the students and teachers of Clear Creek Independent School District. Interested restaurant owners still have time be included in this year’s event. “This year, the response to the Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Dine Out to Donate has been tremendous,” said Kaci Hanson, CCEF Executive Director. “The community continues to demonstrate its strong support of the Clear Creek Independent School District, and we thank all of the participating restaurants for their commitment.” CCEF encourages citizens to dine out for a good cause on Monday, Sept. 21. The process is simple – patrons enjoy a meal at a participating restaurant, and restaurant proprietors donate a portion of the proceeds to CCEF to support its many programs, including Teacher Innovative Grants, National Board Teacher Certification, Clear Horizons Early College High School and Technology Education Labs. CCEF board member and South Shore Grille owner Mickey Wooten developed the concept for “Dine Out to Donate” last year and has led the effort for CCEF again this year. “As restaurant owners, this is an opportunity for us to give back to the community,” said Wooten. - Continued on Page 23

eVolve Restaurant 2234 Nasa Parkway Seabrook, TX 77586 What’s your Background/Experience: I grew up in the South and cooking was a major part of family and social events... this led me to working in everything from fast casual chains and finding my way into fine dining. When the chance to move into exclusive, private clubs came along I knew this was the route for me. Working with such diverse clientele afforded me a chance to learn so many techniques, skills and cuisines - old world sausage/curing meats all the way to molecular gastronomy. It also taught me the importance of making every dish the best, even a grilled cheese sandwich needs to be the best grilled cheese you can make. What is your specialty? My personal specialty is Updated Southern Cuisine with heavy world influences. Remaking and updating some of the dishes I grew up with is such an exciting challenge... making sure of course to stay true to the history and heritage that inspired the dish to begin with. The way I have structured eVolve is a way to compliment my specialty. Bringing in chefs from around the world with their own cultural and historical culinary backgrounds gives us the chance to influence and challenge each other daily.

Signature Dish: I have made my career staying away from a “Signature Dish.” I prefer to challenge myself and my staff daily to create new and unique ways to present all the amazing local products available to us. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous or infamous? Working in the private club segment of the industry, I have had the chance to cook and meet numerous famous and/or infamous people. I do still however still respect the private nature of those great institutions. Please share 1 special cooking tip or technique for our readers: My cooking mantra.... “Start with great ingredients, and don't mess them up.” All this means is buy local, fresh products from trustworthy farmers or markets. There is no need to get fancy with every meal you eat. Sometimes, a great grilled snapper with lemon is the perfect meal.

Featured Artist: Robin Parker

Artist Robin Parker’s studio name defines not only herself, but also her unique painting style. “Guess you could say it’s slightly off center,” joked Parker. She didn’t grow up painting. According to Parker, her sister is an incredible artist and has been since she was four years old. Parker said her sister “had [art] covered for the family.” Then, about nine years ago, Parker shared she attempted painting. “I wanted to try it and see what I could do,” she said. Parker painted a portrait of Marilyn Monroe. She admitted, “It was good and others thought it was good.” Parker continued to hone her own painting style though she confessed she sometimes calls her sister for advice. With no formal art training, Parker’s frame of mind transfers to the canvas in an imaginative combination of bold, bright colors and intriguing textures. “Must have lots of color,” she said and she likes to add dimension too. “I add jewelry, stones, paper mache, and more. Nuggets here and there to make my vision complete,” Parker told. She especially adorns her portraits of women with jewelry pieces she often finds at garage sales. Parker stated, “I do not restrict myself to reality in color or texture choices. Sometimes the trees need to be purple with shredded US currency for leaves.” - Continued on Page 23

Featured Artist: Continued From Page 20 Curiosity drove Parker’s first endeavor with texture. She said, “I wonder if I can do this and see if I can create three dimensional art.” Her experimentation worked and her paintings “pop off the canvas.” Most of Parker’s paintings start from an idea which she explained usually comes right before her sleep at night. She added, “I mull it over to form a solid idea.” After the passing of her mother, Parker disclosed she gets inspiration from thinking about her mom and painting something she enjoyed. Other times, Parker revealed, “If I get frustrated, I just throw paint and see what happens.” Parker’s choice medium of acrylic is not limited to canvas. “I will paint on rocks, steel, walls, doors, anything,” she declared. Parker said, “I paint what I enjoy. No one can tell me you can’t do it that way.” Parker lives and paints in La Porte. Her commission work includes people and pet portraits in her own non-photo-realistic style. Many of her paintings are currently on display at Mainly Drinks in La Porte. Robinson was an avid sailor, boat owner and racing participant. She was a member of the Harvest Moon Regatta Committee for years and was a great supporter of the event. Despite a healthy lifestyle, Robinson was diagnosed with advanced stage ovarian cancer in 2009 and died within a year. While battling ovarian cancer, she was determined to do something to raise awareness about the vague signs and symptoms and ineffective screening tools for victims of ovarian cancer. She and her friends then created the JLR Foundation. To participate in the Sail-a-thon, please visit the website www.harvestmoonregatta.com and click on Sail-A-Thon.

Weekends on the Water GALVESTON HERITAGE FESTIVAL

to debut August 15 in Historic Kempner Park Book your passage now for Galveston Historical Foundation’s newest event, the Galveston Heritage Festival! Enjoy music, food and entertainment from numerous cultural groups and organizations from throughout Texas while learning more about the early days of immigration through the Port of Galveston. Held in Kempner Park at 27th and Avenue O, the event opens its gates at 10 am and concludes at 8 pm on Saturday, August 15. Tickets are available at www.galvestonhistory.org and are $10 for adults, $8 for GHF members, $5 for youth 6-12 year’s old and free for children 5 and under. “GHF will celebrate the island’s rich heritage by recognizing the people and cultures that came to Galveston in the 19th and 20th centuries,” explains Dwayne Jones, GHF Executive Director. “This inaugural event kicks off a concerted effort by GHF to capture individual and family stories for almost 200 years. We see this as the first of many annual events to recognize local cultural entities and welcome back families from across the state and the West with ties to Galveston Island.” The event will be set in historic Kempner Park and the c.1880 Garten Verein pavilion, and feature a craft beer garden, live entertainment on outdoor stages as well as lectures and hands-on workshops. Additionally, descendants of immigrants who came through the Port of Galveston from the early 1800s to the mid20th century will be on hand throughout the park, sharing their cultural heritage through vendor tents, exhibits and more.

Also making its debut this year is a pop-up exhibit with contributions from the public. The Galveston Heritage Festival is seeking 50 objects that represent what Galveston’s immigration history means to you. Have something that belongs in a museum? Does your family history include a unique artifact that you want to put on display? It could be one of 50 items that will be selected from the public for this temporary exhibit set up at the Garten Verein. Submit images and a description of your artifact online, at www.galvestonhistory.org, for consideration. Submissions will be accepted through July 31st and, if your artifact is selected, complimentary admission to the festival for two will be included as the festival’s way of saying thanks. Known as the “Ellis Island of the West,” Galveston’s port was a primary point of entry for thousands of immigrants settling across Texas and the western United States. These immigrant groups would establish communities throughout the southern United States, and beyond. The Galveston Heritage Festival will celebrate the bold vision and contributions these groups made to our history. For more information, please contact Will Wright, Director of Marketing & Special Events at 409-765- 3404, will.wright@galvestonhistory.org or visit www.galvestonhistory.org.

League City's Easy Street Keeping Life Simply Easier By Rhonda Meredith Most people would like to be on Easy Street. It’s a great place where life is simply easier. This way of thinking is celebrated at League City's Easy Street. Located at 112 Highway 3 North -- situated in a stand-alone building between Starbuck’s and Guitar Hacienda -- Easy Street has been a part of the local community for more than 30 years. Owner Mike Brenneman, who was a patron, took over ownership in March. “League City's Easy Street is a small place where you will get to know everyone on your first visit,” said Manager Rick Reckkio. “And on the second visit people will remember your name. It’s a neighborhood bar where everyone is welcome and a great place to unwind.” One of the biggest changes has been bringing live music to the venue. Entertainers performing on Fridays in August are some area favorites: Chris J. Hardy, Wood & Wind, Big Tip Todd (acoustic),

The 007s, and Cisco Nonother. “We definitely support local professional musicians and musical artists,” said Recckio. In addition to music, Easy Street has a jukebox, pool table, and Golden Tee and Corn Hole games. Of course, regulars may have noticed the pool table was moved. That’s for two reasons: It allows for more room to dance, and now it is closer to the bar! See, Easy Street Lounge is all about life being easier!

clude Sunday Funday with Amanda’s Bloody Marys until 7 p.m.; $1.50 wells on Monday; $5 bombs on Thursday; and $3 import beers on Friday. Make note for “Hero Night!” Every Wednesday it’s happy hour all night for military, teachers, police, nurses, and EMT professionals. On Tuesday nights, have some fun singing your favorite tunes karaoke-style with DJ Micah Matthews. Easy Street has food vendors on a rotating schedule. “Like” their Facebook page to see when Ring of Fire barbecue and others will be stopping in, and “get it until it runs out.” “Check in and check back often,” said Recckio. “We are adding more live music and TVs, plus some interior upgrades.”

League City's Easy Street likes to keep Sitting at the ample bar area, you will be things simple, so all you have to rememwell-taken care of by one of their attentive ber is they are open seven days a week bartenders. Additional artist, the stage diving, the music was flowing, and everyone was drink specials inhaving a good time. It reaffirmed everything that Wilson had wanted to do and he thought to himself, "This is why I do this!" Scout Bar, a multi-venue entertainment destination located at 18307 Egret Bay Boulevard, has rocked the Bay Area for the past 11 years. Its stage has hosted a wide variety of local, regional, national and international musical artists and touring acts. Concert-goers enjoy an energy-fueled concert powered by more than 20,000 watts of audio, accompanied with a state-of-theart lighting system. Scout Bar’s unique interior design has personal touches everywhere. The autographed guitars and tour posters are pieces of visual history interwoven between the cool pieces of art that adorn the walls. Wilson’s direct involvement in the changes has kept the venue’s personality intimate. One of Scout Bar’s biggest changes was in the Green Room. The “pub within a club” has a classic red, black, and white décor, and numerous flat screen and projection TVs. It also boasts an exciting assortment of craft beer choices. Wilson likes to keep the inventory interesting, so if you are looking for a rare or cutting-edge craft beer, then you can probably find it at Scout Bar. As for future projects, Wilson has a lot of strong ideas including recreating the look of the back patio. Tear out the wood and add fire pits and new furniture and maybe even an acoustic stage. You never know. But what you can be assured of is that Scout Bar will always be the place to go to create future memories.

The interesting thing about this young, two-year-old band (Blake Jackson-Guitar/Vocals Chris DupontKeys/Vocals Jarrell Campbell-Drums/Vocals Jared KingBass) is their light and breezy approach to the alternative genre folding in smatterings of fusion and jazz into their recipe, which stirs up into a light and refreshing sound for the ears. I’m going to mark this band onto my watch list and suspect over the years as they accumulate more PA and stage gear. It could be a band we’ll see more of in the area out and about. Just a hunch. You may want to put them on your watch list too…

local live music, and I promise that you’ll think of something and come back stronger than ever. Lilly told me that, and she was right… For the rest of us, the month of August will be an important one for our Astros and with school gearing up, it’s time for you to live like this will be your last month. (It’s not really your last month, but it never hurts living like it is sometimes!) There are plenty of great places on the SCENE with great food and drinks, and better yet, awesome air conditioning!!! So do yourself a favor, turn your thermostat up and take it out and about. Better yet, bring along a friend or two – the more, the merrier. They’ll be happy you saved them money on their electric bill and with the extra wad of cash, go make their world turn. Okay? See ya out there!

IT’S A WRAP – The last few months, we’ve chatted with several of you from the oil and gas industries who’ve wondered what in the world just hit them. If you’re one of those who got whammied lately, remember you’re not alone. Take yourself out for a good dose of

The troubadour pair of Steve and Jimmy along with Greg Tillman on the drum machine were hanging in strong having just wrapped up the Galveston Bay Parrot Head Club’s annual Riddles in the Sand fundraiser (always a humdinger). What’s really cool about this band is how effortlessly they flow from song to song slipping in on-the-fly bites letting you know while you’re with them that they’re with you – tight, in a friendly fun sort of way… While chatting with the boys, I was able to discover how Steve will be kicking back and resting his kicker after a career of kicking around. It should only take a couple months at most, and he is already looking forward to coming back. As for Jimmy, he is shopping for a metal detector and will be hunting for Southbound gold where a fleet of fully loaded @ Outriggers Spanish galleons reportedly sank – and with some good luck, we may have a hard time getting him back. Go figure…. Cheers!

These guys run the most interesting of oldfashioned sound checks by simply vamping on chords, mix in a few sizzling licks, drum rolls, bass thumps and shouts into the mic as loud as possible all at the same time and leaving it to the sound guy to sort things out – *That’s* rock & roll people… Aside from the nifty lift-off was how the two masters effortlessly and endlessly, passed the lead back and forth while smoothly quilting in cover melodies, where the fit was right, the entire evening long – Genius….

We arrived in time to catch Slide Effect, Chris Elliot & Friends including 12year-old Matthew Grant. Chatting with his parents, Matthew showed a knack for playing guitar at the age of 3. When I first spotted Matthew, I thought he was simply a good lad helping out musicians loading in. But his fascination watching Chris Elliot replacing strings on his 12 string caught my attention – more so did seeing the young lad playing on the stage holding down a pretty good SRV & ZZ Top rhythm playing on stage along with the big boys through a Fender tube amp that probably weighed as much as he did. Keep an eye out for this fellow, okay? It was a great day for the music – to kick back and to catch up with friends – Papa be smiling…. WILL PLAY FOR FOOD IV – Each year, this fundraiser for the Galveston County Food Bank put on by the local alternative music community simply keeps getting better and better-er. To beat the heat, this dandy summer music festival is held both indoors and outdoors at Scout Bar with 17 bands on two stages joining up with Hardy & Company, a growing list of sponsors, plus live streaming by PunkStar Full Throttle Industries. Pretty cool, eh?

The music this year reached more genre corners than ever making it a “something for everybody” type of Will Play For Food @ Scout Bar festival which along with cause, qualifies this annual gig for summertime good karma events. Check elsewhere in the SCENE for a photo spread of some of the Who’s Who that were there which may include you! ’TIL WE MEET AGAIN – I got word that the band Southbound will be taking a Southbound @ Outriggers break from their busy gigging schedule, so we cleared the calendar and headed to Outriggers for their last show for awhile.

Music this cool evening was headlined by Hourglass (one of my favorites when it comes to classic flashback music), along with guest appearances from Theresa Pabin, Scooter Tyra, Ralinda Fenton, Aaron Dunlap, Joey Wainright, Jenna Hope and Christopher Smith representing the live music, open mic and karaoke circles in a single gathering which in itself is a pretty cool musical convergence. Do the math yourself, and with all this coolness happening at a single place in time, you end up with an Over-The-Top event in my books – Very well played!!! PARTY HEARTY – Which describes the good people at Jackie’s Brickhouse where there’s plenty of room to frolic. Last month, we checked out Space Monkeys out of north Houston for the first time and give them a thumbs-up for cover music. We returned to the Brickhouse a second time in July to confirm what we suspected of the Velcro Pygmies, that these guys are simply “outrageous” – a term I don’t think I’ve ever used in my years of writing. Checking out their load-in area in the back of the Brickhouse, I don’t think there are many places large enough to host the Pygmies – whose fans happily refer to themselves as Pigheads. Another thing I witnessed like never before was the crazy amounts of shots sold which apparently is a Pygmy show trademark. See-

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

July was a sizzler – in more ways than one. My month’s end, our Astros were still in the thick of things; we’ve been spared the hurricane so far; and the local live music harvest has been like no other! The patio season is at full swing and life on the water has been what many have been waiting for. We simply ran out of days by the end of the month, but had a great time out and about with many of you. Let’s run down some of what all went down.

COCK & BULL REOPENING – A FULL house turned out for the reopening of the Cock & Bull in July. Their menu lists many of the crowd’s favorites going back to the original opening days and the spirits were flowing abundantly that fine evening. Wood & Wind were on stage for the dinner crowd, setting an enjoyable tone and tenor that night. Customers were graced with the presence of the finest of British royalty available in the Clear Lake area. Pretty cool, eh? Speaking of cool…

OVER THE TOP – And right out of the gate was the evening folks spent enjoying the throw-down duet of Steve Shannon and Starr Jernigan sharing the Seabrook Beach Club stage at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack. These two – in my opinion – are amongst the area’s top talent (along with

ON BEING COOL – Which on most days would be turning 60, and that’s exactly what happened in the scorching month of July at the CockEyed Seagull (a place that’s on our list of top places with great air conditioning). Cover Story Revisit THE COCK & BULL BRITISH Expanded Menu, More Beer, More Music

PUB:

By Rhonda Meredith If you haven’t visited The Cock & Bull British Pub recently, it’s time to stop in and check out the updates. The neighborhood venue, located at 3659 NASA Parkway in Seabrook, is under new ownership. Patrons can look forward to more beer and an expanded menu with new seafood dishes. The exterior still sports a big Great Britain flag on it, but The Cock & Bull British Pub’s old British interior decorum is transitioning to have a more modern London appeal. The progressive vibe even has more emphasis on beer! More beer taps have expanded the beer selection to 27 brands on tap and a bigger bottle selection. The key word here is “more” because in addition to more beer, The Cock & Bull British Pub has placed more TVs around the pub. This means more spots to sit and watch local and major sporting events. There is definitely more fun to be had at The Cock & Bull British Pub. For instance, experience the fun of a “Tap Takeover” event this month with St. Arnold’s Brewery on Thursday, August 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. Also coming up this month are “Beer & Bites” and “Wine & Dine” events. Visit The Cock & Bull British Pub on Facebook to keep up with their schedule. You do not want to miss “Comedy Night” or any upcoming theme parties! Week night happenings offer additional entertainment and an extended Happy Hour which runs from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday night from 8 to 9:30 p.m. is “Trivia Night” complete with a grand prize, beer specials, and a special late night menu until 9 p.m. Wednesday nights showcase new local talent at the “Open Mic,” and it’s “Ladies Night” from 5 to 10 p.m. Thirsty Thursday honors real life heroes by providing a food discount to medical professionals, and first responders (with the proper I.D.) Friday and Saturday nights feature live music and/or themed parties such as “Disco Night.” And when it’s time to begin the week all over again, start the week right with a customer favorite and delight in the Sunday Brunch!

Chef Lauren Well’s passion and hardworking ethic – along with her creativity in the kitchen – is bringing a contemporary flare to the menu as well the fabulous Sunday brunch featuring bottomless mimosas served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. New additions to the brunch are English favorites such as Eggs Florentine and Eggs Benedict for example. The real “Brit breakfast” is being redefined! As is the value lunch menu with British fare and American entrées and a drink for just $8. Choices include Shepherd’s Pie, Fish & Chips, burgers, soup and sandwiches, and other options. Seafood aficionados will want to take note: live lobsters will be available starting this month. All items are guaranteed fresh and made with ingredients from local vendors. The dinner menu has also been expanded to facilitate a melting pot of cultures. Owners Jeffrey Choi and Josh Miles want your experience to be a fun one. They have worked hard to train their staff to provide outstanding customer service and to cultivate relationships with their patrons. If you have not been to The Cock & Bull British Pub lately, it’s time to stop back in and see what the buzz is all about.
