31st Annual CAF

Wings Over Houston Airshow to feature Air Force Thunderbirds & Breitling Jet Team The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the Breitling Jet Team headline this year’s Commemorative Air Force (CAF) 31st Annual Wings Over Houston Airshow, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, at Ellington Airport. “We’re very excited to have two worldclass jet team performances by the Thunderbirds and Breitling Jet Team this year, and pre-show ticket sales have been fantastic,” said Airshow Director Bill Roach. “We have an exciting lineup of aviation performances, including civilian acrobatic pilots and vintage aircraft reenactments and flight formations, as well as numerous exhibits and activities. Now in our 31st year, we are proud to be a Houston family tradition.”

Breitling Jet Team Precision. Speed. Audacity. Aerobatics is one of the world’s most demanding disciplines – and one of the most fascinating sights. A concentrated blend of technique, mastery and style. In order to share its passion for aerobatics with a broad audience, Breitling has created the Breitling Jet Team, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team performing on jets.

The Thunderbirds, performing as a team of six F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, return to Houston following their last Wings Over Houston performance in 2010. The Breitling Jet Team from Europe, the world’s largest professional civilian flight team that performs in seven L-39C Albatros jet aircraft, will end their first U.S. tour with this first-time performance at Wings Over Houston. The show’s lineup, in addition to the Thunderbirds and Breitling performances, includes: • VFA-122 Super Hornet Demonstration Team • Civilian acrobatic performances by Debbie Rihn-Harvey, Kevin Coleman and David Martin • Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation flights • CAF Tora! Tora! Tora reenactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor • U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter Dolphin MH65D • A large number of vintage military aircraft, flying in formations and reenactments, flown by crews from various units of the Commemorative Air Force, Texas Flying Legends Museum, Lone Star Flight Museum, Vietnam War Flight Mu-

seum, Lewis Collection, Cavanaugh Flight Museum and Collings Foundation. Other highlights of the show include static displays of vintage and modern military aircraft as well as numerous exhibits and activities including: Legends and Heroes Tent featuring distinguished veterans signing autographs and memorabilia, NASA Driven to Explore Exhibit, Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Hangar 57, Experimental Aircraft Association, National USA Forces Museum, The 6th Cavalry Historical Association, Kid’s Carnival, motion simulator rides and more. GIO’S Remastered: By Rhonda Meredith

Fall brings new upgrades at Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta door to the back of the restaurant, just about everything will be enhanced,” said owner Steve Gunnett. He and wife Diana have been hands-on with the venue’s upgrades. “The exciting thing is that our regulars are having a fun time trying to figure out what's new, as things are changing on a weekly basis. If you haven't come by in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised.”

There is always something going on at Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta. Gio’s, located at 650 FM 517 W. in Dickinson, is a great place to bring a date, watch a sporting event, enjoy a fun family meal, or just about any occasion you can think of. Gio’s open design is ideal for families and large groups. Upon entering, customers will delight in the updated interior. A Mediterranean-style ceramic tile roof covers the hostess stand and carry-out areas. The ceramic tiles for the structures were actually made in Italy! New paint, pictures, and wood trim cover the walls. Beautiful stained glass can be seen over side windows. There is a wooden overhang over the west-facing booth seats, suspended by steel turnbuckles, making the establishment even cozier. Coming in October, a wine display case will separate the main dining room from the high-table area where the big screen TVs are, and Gio's will proudly be serving gelato!

Toward the back of the restaurant, the bar area is being extended and will be covered with slate granite. Steel cabinets will be suspended from the ceiling over the new bar. There will be an entire wall dedicated to high-table booth seating in the TV area, to better accommodate large parties in and around the bar. Already a great place to hang out and root for your favorite team, enjoy one (or a few) of the ten beers on tap including local craft beers. Many items on the menu are perfect for that football or baseball playoff game. Consider the wings, mozzarella sticks, or toasted ravioli, Gio’s Crab Cakes (two Panko-crusted crab cakes served with Chipotle lemon butter sauce). Gio’s also offers a half-pound hamburger that will inspire pure bliss. The Choice Burger is made with New York strip trimmings, filet tips, and 80/20 top beef sirloin. It is served with Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and a side of waffle fries.

GIO’S FOR DELIVERY OR CATERING: Did you know? Gio’s has a separate catering menu that's perfect for large gatherings off-site, such as birthdays, weddings, business functions, church and school events. Owner Diana Gunnett is the first point of contact and actually serves at the weddings. For those wanting to just pick up large trays of food for an event and feed a minimum of 10 people for not a lot of money, Gio’s is happy to provide everything: plates, cutlery, serving utensils, beverages, ice, cups, and everything else you will need. If you can’t pick it up, Gio’s will deliver. Contact Gio’s for delivery or catering at 281-337-0107. View the catering and party tray menu at www.giosflyingpizza.com.

and grilled, then topped with a butter, garlic and white wine sauce and shrimp, served with a side of capellini with garlic and basil, and sauteed veggies).

You don't need a “Steak Night” for their Rib-eye steak! Get the 11ounce Rib-eye steak (hand-cut in house, seasoned and grilled to order, with rosemary potatoes and sautéed veggies) at a great price any time.

There are also items off the menu you can delight in. Opt for the Pork Valdostana (provolone-stuffed, grilled pork ribeye in a Valdostana gravy with mushrooms and artichokes, with a side of veggies and potatoes), and the Salmon Pescatore (served in a sherry cream sauce, with shrimp, tomatoes and olive oil, served on capellini pasta, with sauteed veggies). Enjoy your meal with the taste of Gio’s house wine at only $4 a glass.

After being in business for more than six years, Gio’s knows a thing or two about freshly made flying pizzas. With ingredients prepared fresh daily, you can bet the pies will be bursting with flavor. But based on the restaurant’s name, you may not know that Gio’s serves a great selection of fine Italian specialties. These uncommon items wouldn’t be expected on the menu at just “any pizza place,” and their prices are family friendly. Made from scratch and prepared on site, the food at Gio’s is a dynamic blend of Italian and Tuscany tastes. Popular dishes on the menu include the Penne Civitavecchia “Roma” (penne pasta tossed with diced grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, feta cheese, garlic, basil, and olive oil), the Luca Brazi (grilled salmon topped with artichokes, capers and lemon sauce, served with sauteed veggies), and the Tilapia Bianco (seasoned

Along with quality food, Gio’s takes great care to ensure that, according to Steve, “every last customer walks out happy.” Since the age of 15, Steve has been working in Italian restaurants, even owning two previous establishments. When he was a kid, the Italian cooks called him “Gio.” Steve and Diana designed the restaurant’s interior from the ground up, and Gio’s is the culmination of all those years of experience. But Diana is quick to credit her employees. “Our dedicated, diligent staff has been a vital component in Gio’s increasing success.” Anytime is the right to time to visit Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta for a lunch or dinner that will truly satisfy at a reasonable price. But, if you cannot make it to Gio’s, they take customer service a bit further and deliver their entire menu (including specials) within a 6-mile radius. Gio’s is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Skallywag Suds N’ Grub: Friends, It’s Time To Get Hungry

Asian Pork Belly Tacos

By Rhonda Meredith Think fast: What do Woody Woodpecker and Wyatt Earp have in common? They taste awesome on a pretzel bun! Wait, what? Read on my friend…

Lambda Lambda Sliders Skallywag Suds N’ Grub, located literally right inside the Kemah Lighthouse District at 600 6th Street, has just recently unveiled their new menu to the delight of the foodie crowd. You will need to keep in mind that this is not your generic pub grub. Think Southern-fusion, exotic-game burgers, smoked meat sandwiches, and many more scrumptious menu items that will call Moby Dick (yellow fin tuna sandwich) your name. Skallywag offers daily “food truck-esque” styled food. “Our food pairs well with our 40-plus beers on tap,” said owner Demetri Kouloumoundras. “Our kitchen is set up for those who need to grab and go, or for those who want to use the bar or perimeter seating and enjoy Skallywag’s craft beer selections or our full-service bar.” Take note that perusing the menu choices and making a selection can be tricky because everything just sounds so incredibly tasty! - Continued on Page 22

ART OF KOSMO

SC

Featured Artist: Doug Kosmo

By Kelley Dawson

Local artist, Doug Kosmo dreams of just the right art show to present his creations. Kosmo shared his image of a Vaudevilleesque show with a black curtain being drawn to reveal each painting. His vision even includes a barker attracting the patrons and behind the paintings, a real-life replication of the piece to create a “whole experience.” Kosmo’s works deserve such a show, yet his pieces perform brilliantly all on their own. His paintings reach out, grab hold, and narrate intriguing stories. They speak loudly with bold colors, specific details, and peculiar perspective. “I’m inspired by stories, music, and cool, old photographs,” told Kosmo. All of his inspirations are very apparent in each of his works. Kosmo finds photos of “weird moments in time” in old books and online searches that peek his interest. “I don’t know what the story or photo is,” he said. Kosmo explained his paintings based on old photos are non-realistic and encompass his interpretation of the story. He added he attempts to tell the story “my way into painting and with color.” Kosmo’s brushstroke stories began over 20 years ago with murals at the 1980s Houston hot spot Power Tools. He studied graphic arts and designed unique graphics for a popular snowboard and skateboard company. Kosmo shared that his current art includes both acrylic and oils on canvas to produce an eclectic mix. His subjects include animals, and people during many eras such as 1800s Western and Native American to musicians of the 1920s. Many Kosmo paintings have sold across the United States and various countries including France and Costa Rica. He said recently he has been experimenting with painting on small, rectangular cut pieces of old fence boards that can be fit together. His hope for customers to create a design-your-own collection of art of Kosmo. He believes, “It’s all about taking chances.” To view more of Doug Kosmo’s works, visit www.artofkosmo.com or email info@artofkosmo.com. Kosmo’s paintings are currently on display at the Butler Longhorn Museum in League City.

On Saturday, October 10, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women, and women only, who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5k (3.1 mile) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam, and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course”, says Event Director Claire Jordan, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” For the October event, a portion of the

Now that your taste buds are aroused, it’s time to place an order for a mouth-watering burger, a satisfying “sammich,” or tacos! Skallywag’s burger options include the aforementioned Wyatt Earp (buffalo meat, bacon marmalade, caramelized onion,

The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive, so participants can complete the course at their own pace, and enjoy every moment. Women can participate as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family, or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. The “sammiches” selections tempt with items such as The Woody Woodpecker (blackened chicken with bacon, avocado and tomato on a pretzel bun); the Moby Dick (fresh yellow fin steak, blackened and topped with summer slaw and dill aioli on a pretzel bun with lemon); and the Mother Klucker (battered chicken with pickles, American cheese, buffalo sauce, and honey on an old-skool bun.)

Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae, and complimentary beer. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun”, says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” The minimum age to participate in the Gritty Goddess is 10 years old, however, on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1k obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, aged 6-13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com or www.grittykids.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.”

Tacos are for any day of the week. Especially when you opt for the Asian Pork Belly Tacos (braised pork belly, sweet pepper herb slaw, sesame vinaigrette on corn tortillas); the Sunrise Taco (egg whites, cheese, bacon on flour tortillas with side of pico); or the Fat Donkey (a burrito with chicken, black beans, avocado, cabbage, pico, cheese, and jalapeño ranch wrapped in a flour tortilla.) See Skallywag’s ad in this month’s issue for their extended happy hour drink specials as well as their daily food and drink specials. Skallywag is open from noon to 2 a.m. every day. The kitchen hours are Sundays through Thursdays from noon to midnight and Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 1 a.m.

A NEW GAME - Saw an interesting site the other night with Claudia Hammond strapped into a Stratocaster at the Hourglass show at the Cock-Eyed Seagull in September. Over the years, we’ve only seen her play on acoustic Martins and Taylors. Mark Fenton describes the new style as a Joan Jet look – I thought it sounded great and am look forward to hearing more of it through the years ahead. The previous owner of the Stratocaster was area min-

strel, Steve Shannon, who no doubt imparted many hours of fine playing on the instrument. NEW BAND OF THE YEAR CATEGORY – And if the vote were to be called today, my vote would go to The Waltones. Lead by keyboard monster, Randy Wall, this new band features a lineup of seasoned musical veterans from across the greater Houston Metroplex including Chris Perry

(Drums), Brian Rooney (Bass), and Bob Emmons (guitar) – Plus they “all” can sing! Tight on a huge variety of songs and able to handle requests, the Waltones band is certified as “party ready” in my book. We caught this group for the first time at Katie’s, that fine little music appreciation room in Bacliff where there’s never a cover. Bob surprised me that evening by playing on the lead guitar as I’ve only seen him on either the bass or riding the sound board – That or running one of the friendliest places happening along with his charming wife, Katie. He’s a pretty good lead player too, I might add. Check ’em out! IT’S A WRAP – Hope everybody out there had a great summer. With the days getting shorter and the weather cooler, we get to look forward to the best time of the year, snow bird season Gulf Coast style. But before that, let’s all have a great October as Indian Summertime passes through, okay? Be sure and check out some of the outdoor festival events happening in the area, take in a great meal and hang out at one of the many great spots we have on The SCENE! We’ll see you out there!

AND THE POINT BEING - Prior to becoming a shutterbug, I used to record music and produce CD albums of live music performances. About 8 years ago, my guitar dealer, Danny D invited me out to check out his band, at that time playing the old Sundance Grill, where I met Andy Upchurch of Andy and The Dreamsicles. Over the years, this group has entertained thousands of people in the local area and in September, we caught up with them doing just that at T-Bone Tom’s under the big palapa stage which gets us to the point of the matter – HEY FOLKS, IT’S PATIO SEASON!!! If you haven’t already, IT’S TIME TO GET OUT!!! TOUR STOP CLEAR LAKE – This month, we caught Nothing More on their Monster Outbreak Tour along with a full house at Scout Bar in September. With a seemingly dubious

THE SCENE

roster over their 12-year history of 12 musicians, this current line up has demonstrated to be most solid with only drummer Ben Anderson being the only member with fewer than seven years tenure. Frontman Jonny Hawkins (lead vocals and additional drums) clearly connects with the audience giving it his all while veterans Mark Vollelunga and Daniel Oliver (guitar and bass) shows through their love for playing to the appreciative fans, something you simply can’t fake. Looking at the setup at Scout Bar, I’m actually sorta glad we don’t have that humungous amphitheatre like they do up north or that huge fine art theatre out west. Yeah, they’re nice and draw lots of good shows, but a Tour Stop Clear Lake, every seat at Scout Bar is up front. We’ve got it good!! - Continued on Page 31

LOOSE NOTES: From Page 36 OVER THE TOP – Was watching this year’s Emmy Awards and couldn’t help but notice all the stars of yesteryear pulling in nominations for the seemingly more dignified and elderly categories these days. These nominees really need to go see a Hunger show and see what aging with out “getting old” is all about. This year’s annual Hunger Pre-Labor Day party at Scout Bar clearly made it on my over-the-top list – ’Twas good catching up with many of you… Many bands I’ve witnessed over the years age with grace and dignity, but with the Hunger, we notice that these guys simply reload, stick it in your face, all while kicking everything up to a higher level. Pretty impressive, yes? I’ve made mention before the brilliance of bringing in another keyboard player, allowing the two Wilson brothers to focus on the vocal harmonies – Aside from sounding better than ever as one powerful voice, the band cleared the stage of the mic stand clutter making room for high-flying action complete with a good, old-fashioned mosh pit, all of which tallying the score that night to an Over the Top level. My only lament about the entire evening was being able to get a picture of the entire band all looking into the camera at the same time and out of position on some of the jumps – Utterly impossible…. The honor of opening on this evening went to Vanilla Sugar and Tydings and possibly a candidate for new band of the year, To Whom It May. This band includes the former Melovine members sans frontman Matthew Neice, featuring Johnathan Jourdan (Lead), Robb Marshall (bass), and Dexas Villarreal (drums). An awesome night with a great crowd – an epic show! Cheers!!! - Continued on Page 33

LOOSE NOTES: From Page 37 In case you’ve never been to Zone, it’s a perfectly sized venue of a large garage-sized proportions which makes it a great place to catch the latest bands coming out who very likely formulated their sound inside a garage to perfection at loud volumes which just so happens to translate perfectly into the cozy Zone 504 caverns, complete with a great AC, full bar and grill, making for a perfect evening of fine live music. Dig it? Jackie’s Brickhouse – ’Twas time to checkout one the area’s favorite performers, the Mambo Jazz King’s at Jackie’s Brickhouse, of course. It was a fine night catching up with Tim Miller (of Equusearch) in the house relaxing and shooting a game of pool in the back. Mr. Miller speaks with his eyes louder than anybody I’ve ever seen and that evening at the Brickhouse, it was good seeing him get in some R&R. Back to the Jazz Kings. Personally, I first crossed paths with this big band at the first GBAMA post-Ike fundraiser, and along with you, have enjoyed their shows over the years since. Band Master, Art, had the group crisp and tight on the turnarounds as ever. One of these

THE SCENE

days, I think it would be cool if Jackie’s Brickhouse brought the Mambo Jazz Kings to the annual Clear Lake Epicurean Evening for the night’s entertainment – Either the Jazz Kings or somebody like Madigan, either would make for the perfect big event the likes this area seems to be missing since Ballunar Festival, South Shore Harbor Wine Festival, or the Old Seabrook Music Festival. Perhaps? - Continued on Page 34

Well done, folks! Another summer is successfully in the books; another school year has begun. We survived the anniversary of Hurricane Ike dry as a bone and despite the rough start for our hometown pro football team, pressing on with the gusto that makes us Houston. GALVESTON BAY BREWERY Continued From Page 43 "I never thought our Duck Duck Gose would be as popular as it is, but only because I wasn't sure how people would like the sour characteristic of the Gose style. But we have a lot of people who love it and we can't brew enough of it to keep it on draft in the tap room." A key ingredient in Galveston Bay Beer's Gose is Coriander seeds, which come from the Cilantro plant. Cilantro, considered a staple in Mexican dishes, is actually native to Asia and Europe and didn't appear in Mexican cuisine until around 1500. Other tap-room exclusives of note include the Blueberry Blonde, Captain's Coffee Stout, The Golden Mild, Lafitte’s Watermelon (Hefeweizen), Dockside Dunkelweiss, Tripletail Belgian Tripel, Porter of Texas City, Lifeboat Lime (Pale Ale), ExSpouse Bitter, Mosaic Smash IPA, Toasted Mermaid (English Brown Ale), Lighthouse Lager, Red Tide (Irish Red Ale) and the really popular Duck Duck Gose. Feel free to ask questions and have the servers recommend staff and patron favorites. You will notice they are eager to talk about their beers and help you find

THE SCENE

your favorite(s). Matter of fact, Henry has been pleased with the volunteers the brewery has been able to recruit. “We are very appreciative of the relationship we have with our volunteers,” Henry explains. “They are great to us and it is a great way for someone to get involved in this exciting growing industry. We welcome people to come learn more about our volunteer program.”

Next for Galveston Bay Beer company is more growth. More beers, more production and Henry has already started the “long process” to eventually get cans of some of their most popular beers out to the marketplace.

Any stop at the brewery can also include a tour of the brewery. Beyond the tap room is the fermentation and conditioning room which is visually dominated by two giant, stainless steel fermentors to help give you an appreciation for the scale of Galveston Bay's production. But Henry is quick to point out there is plenty of room for more to be added. Outside the fermentation room, is the giant brewhouse that once was used to brew award-winning beers at the Rikenjaks brewery in Louisiana before being relocated by Henry to Texas in 2008 and stored until the right opportunity came to open, much to the benefit of the local community and beer culture.

GALVESTON BAY BEER CO. SHARES PASSION FOR BEER AND COMMUNITY The scene is a brewery tap room alive with action and conversation, reminding one of the impact neighborhood breweries have played for years in the small towns of Germany and other countries where beer is an anchor of popular culture and local community. This tap room is located inside the Galveston Bay Beer Company in Dickinson and on this evening it hosts a mixture of locals and beer enthusiasts who came from outside the immediate area to check it out.

Sunny Day IPA

(7% abv)

There's nothing like kicking back on a sunny day (or maybe dreaming of a sunny day) and enjoying the fresh kick of hops in our Sunny Day IPA. The use of citra hops invoke fruity notes of grapefruit and lime assisted by a honey-like malt backbone built up to provide a perfectly balanced English style IPA that won't wreck your pallet.

Hammerhead Scottish Ale (6.8% abv) Hammerhead is a strong Scottish ale, also known as a wee heavy, brewed in the traditional fashion. A complex mix of malted barley along with a longer boil time give this beer a smooth malty sweetness and deep color while remaining light in body. A great beer that can be enjoyed any time of the year.

The brewery has been open for more than a year and is located inside what looks like a giant aircraft hanger. Inside the front door, patrons are welcomed by an impressive Owner Mark Henry bar that winds throughout the tap room making a couple 90degree turns and offering plenty of great seating from which to sample a dozen beers that were brewed on-site and available on tap.

Tart Cherry Brown (6.3% abv)

Galveston Bay Beer Company founder Mark Henry and his lead brewer Skyler Forshage are often 12900 FM 3436 Rd. Dickinson, TX 77539 found behind the tap room bar sharing their passion for beer with patrons. The tap room first opened in March and is currently open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday could soon be added to the delight of Monday Night Football fans. The room is also available for special events on days it is not open to the public. Lead Brewer Skyler Forshage

Signature Beers Available On Tap at a Venue Near You

(SEASONAL) Fermented with tart Montmorency cherries from Michigan, this special brown ale retains a hint of its cherry flavor without being overly sweet. The combination of malt, hops, and fruit come together to activate all the taste buds on your tongue. It begins with a burst of cherry tartness and as it mellows the toasty flavors of the roasted malts and slight bitterness from earthy hops give this beer a flavorful finish.

Lafitte's Wheat

(5% abv)

Jean Lafitte was a pirate who famously aided General Andrew Jackson in defending New Orleans from the British in 1815 then went on to settle a pirate colony in Galveston, Texas. Galveston Bay Beer Company has its roots in Louisiana – having bought out a brewpub there. Lafitte's Wheat is an incredibly crisp and easy-drinking beer to be enjoyed all year-round. Notes of banana and clove round out a refreshing wheat finish.

With four signature beers and another eight rotating tap-room exclusives on draft, I recommend taking advantage of the flight (four 4oz beers in each flight) option to cover a lot of ground in a responsible way. The flagship beers (see list above) are the more popular beers brewed in large batches and also available on draft at many local restaurants and bars.

All are highly recommended. But part of the excitement in visiting the brewery is to see what experimental beer Fossage recently brewed and now has available on draft. Forshage guesstimates he has easily brewed more than 50 different styles of beer on the brewery's smaller pilot system and is always curious to get feedback. "It is interesting to see which styles of beer are a hit," explains Forshage. - Continued on Page 38

Who You Need To Know About Right Now: By Rhonda Meredith

TYDINGS

Tydings, a progressive reggae band that has a strong, memorable musical groove, is ranked #1 on ReverbNation, and has been nominated two years running in the Houston Press for the “Best Reggae Band” category. This talented band consists of members Jordan Tydings (vocals and guitar); Ryan Damian (drums); Grant Earnest (bass); and new addition Jonathan Siller (turntables.) The musical powerhouse is the brainchild of musician/songwriter Jordan Tydings. He found his purpose in music, and it has been supporting him for more than three years now. Tydings’ music will have you swaying to the irresistible beats, and the lyrics will resonate with every fiber of your being. The words are personal, and an open invitation to view life through Tydings’ eyes. “It’s my life on display,” he says. “The music that comes out is about what is big enough to overflow from my heart. A song can form from wherever life takes me.” His drive comes from the good vibes and messages he passes to the audience and the feeling of getting it returned back. It’s not the attention, nor the lights. It’s the onstage zone he goes into while performing live. Those feelings drive Tydings to do what most people think of as a hobby.

Eddy Raven Sat., October 10 OKTOBERFEST KEMAH

Mark your calendars now to see TYDINGS at Scout Bar on Friday, October 30. The progressive reggae band will be supporting Fortunate Youth. “This show will feature new Tydings music and new elements that you don’t want to miss!” said Jordan Tydings, the band founder and namesake. Get discounted tickets through any Tydings band member. “Like” their Facebook page for more information. Every Tuesday at On The Bayou, Jordan Tydings hosts a unique Open Mic Night for the area from 9 p.m. to close. Everyone is invited! Tydings considers this weekly event a “collective art expression” that goes beyond musicians only. Also, enjoy spoken word, poets, dancers, comedians, and other artistic outlets. “I played in New York a few years back,” said Tydings, “and the vibe of collective art expression brought all kinds of talent to the mic. On The Bayou is a great place to have a good time. The staff and management are outstanding.”

When not performing, Tydings enjoys spending time with his beloved Boxer puppies Samson and Koda, and relaxing at his dad’s farm north of Crockett, Texas. He is a firm believer in individual freedoms and is a proud member of Texas NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. On his personal SoundCloud account, Tydings posts his renditions of songs such as Sam Smith’s song “Know I’m Not The Only One” and “Mad World” by Tears For Fears along with his original no-frills recordings.
