A LITTLE (THAI) SPICE FOR EVERYONE! By Mark Evangelista For Orasinee Nitayangkul Ratanaarporn, the road to opening her first Thai Spice was longer than her name. Now 32 years later, she and her husband Pat have reassumed control of Thai Spice Noodle and Sushi House to lure devotees of the cuisine of her native country and welcome newbies with soul-pleasing twists on familiar Thai dishes. “My husband, he has always loved my food,” Orasinee said. “He said we should give the (first) restaurant a try. If we succeed, we work there. If not, we go to New York and become waiters.” The Ratanaarporns never had to worry about moving away. And with Orasinee and her husband back at the helm, they have created a new home for Clear Lake foodies. Thai Spice has eight locations scattered throughout the Houston area. The first Thai Spice opened in 1983 remains in the Rice Village; other locations include Bellaire, Pearland, downtown Houston, the Heights, Katy and Westheimer. The updated restaurant at 300 W. Bay Area Blvd. in Webster is modern, yet cozy. After taking over from the previous franchisee, the Ratanaarporns ripped out the walls down to the studs from floor to ceiling throughout and rebuilt it anew. Along with new management, new walls and even new ceilings this all makes for a brighter ambiance fitting for a grand opening. Besides the clean design and modern tables and chairs, charming wall coverings spotlight the staples of their offerings such as rice and noodles. With the physical makeover, came a menu makeover that you can not only taste, but truly enjoy. Even the drinks showcase how much change has taken place, starting with the young coconut and the Jamaica. Their young coconut drink with pulp is easily more thirst quenching than any sports drink. Served in a hurricane glass, for some folks, this refreshing concoction could invoke flashbacks of traveling to Southeast Asia. While there is no man with a machete carving out an opening in a green-husked coconut, this drink could easily become a go-to drink for summer – or anytime of year around here! - Continued on Page 10

stuffed with cream cheese and then wrapped in salmon and tuna, rolled in panko bread crumbs and then flash fried.

Another wet-worthy companion to the aromatic fare at Thai Spice is the Jamaica tea. Steeped with hibiscus leaves and blended with a sugar syrup, this could be a dually delectable beverage. Straight up, guests will be enjoying a flower in liquid form; mixed with rum (which guests can bring to the establishment with the BYOB policy), this becomes a ticket to paradise.

The rest of the revamped menu is solid with such dishes as the life-affirming yellow curry and coconut ice cream with sweet rice. The ice cream works as an extinguisher to the fantastic curries. Remember that the curries can be tailored to your taste buds and tolerance for heat.

Good food should follow good refreshments, right? In this case, the transition is seamless. A good start is the Angel Wings, a crispy, savory serving of chicken wings. No servers in orange will serve you a better order of wings. Tomato sauce, red onion, hoisin sauce, sugar, garlic and oyster sauce envelop these lucky chicken pieces and transform them a mandatory start to the meal. The tenets of Thai cuisine – sweet, spicy, sour, bitter and salty – will be having a dance party on your palate. Find traditional sushi dishes here providing the comfort that people crave. But for those eager for culinary adventure, the sushi chef offers a dish that at first confounds and then wows: Jalapeños

THE SCENE

The discovery of one incendiary condiment may be worthy of a pilgrimage by chiliheads. The chili fish sauce, known as prik nam pla, is made with imported peppers from Thailand and fish sauce. For those who enjoy that strange mix of pleasure and pain, this is fifty shades of taste. Even if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen and order some food to go. On a recent early evening, the restaurant did a brisk business of take-away for office workers on the way home. A gathering of young professionals with lanyards and company ID cards filled the dining room with lively conversation and laughter. With the BYOB policy, a quick stop for crowd-pleasing beverages makes for more “team-building.” (Thai Spice does not charge corkage fees, by the way.) While the flavors are complex, the simple decision to eat here is made easier with value and accessible pricing. Items such as sushi and ramen start at under $10, making for a better experience than lunch at your desk. Generous party trays ordered in advance could make you employee of the month. In summary, this place could be all things to all people – hungry ones, of course.

ARTS A BEAUTIFU L LIE Featured Artist: Richard Kelver

By Kelley Dawson

La Porte artist, Richard Kelver’s paintings are quite engaging. His painting of a simple roadside drainage ditch exhibits interesting depth and focus. A common scene we drive or walk by daily; yet Kelver’s unique perspective and lighting of the scene captures our gaze. The piece begs the question, “Why haven’t I paid more attention to my surroundings?” Kelver’s works of everyday scenes are compelling and appear real; though he insists his works are more abstract than realism. Kelver quoted John Singer Sargent, “Painting is a beautiful lie.” “An artist can never reproduce; only interpret,” explained Kelver. Like most artists, Kelver wants the audience to feel engaged. “Communicating to as many folks as you can. They may feel disgusted, happy, wonder, but the worst is no comment at all,” he said. According to Kelver, “Painting is about failure as much as anything and to be able to accept it.” It’s hard to imagine failure when viewing Kelver’s intriguing creations. He started painting at the young age of ten. Kelver said there was no history of other artists in his family. He told, “They were mechanics and farmers. I was the first [artist] to break out.” After high school and an apprenticeship in Miami, Kelver was drafted to Vietnam. He then attended UT for a few years before moving to Galveston.

ZENergy:

Prior to becoming a professional painter, Kelver worked as a sign painter and muralist.

A Place for Balance

He displayed works at his first one-man show in 1989. He proclaimed, “I’ve not painted a sign since.”

is an integrative approach to wellness using hypnotherapy & energy work.

Kelver operated an art studio in Galveston for over 25 years and remained very involved in the local art scene. He shared he even had a brief stint in the film industry painting props for one of the Kenny Rogers’ Gambler movies shot in Galveston.

Hypnotherapy can help with the following: Anxiousness • ADHD and ADD symptoms • Bullying Fears • Meditation • Phobias • Coping skills Sensitivity issues • Self Esteem • Relaxation Techniques Energy Work – Balancing the energetic body. Clearing, healing, & rebalancing the Chakra system which promotes overall health & well-being.

Kelver informed he currently paints almost exclusively with water color though has painted with oil and other mediums. His subjects range from architecture and landscape, but he paints people as well. Kelver disclosed that at one point every one of his paintings had a person in it as a “narrative of souls.” Kelver stated, “A lot of times I’m painting in one particular direction. I like the combo feeling of safe loneliness. Alone, but safe. Calmness is reached in the painting then, and I know it’s done.” He added, “The hardest part is to start a painting and know when it’s finished.”

Clinical Hypnosis can be used to support a variety of Medical issues: Autoimmune disease • Anxious Feelings • Addictive Behavior • Chronic Pain Fibromyalgia Symptoms • Pregnancy, Birth Preparation & Postpartum IBS Symptoms • Insomnia • Migraine • Psoriasis • Smoking Cessation Relief Reduce Stress and Symptoms and/or Stress Triggers • Weight Loss

RICHARD KELVER: Continued from Page 14 Kelver taught art at the Galveston Art Center for almost ten years and now teaches at Upper Bay Frame & Gallery in League City. He also critiques works of fellow artists. Kelver disclosed he often encourages his students to use their non-dominant hand as it somehow improves the art by activating other areas of brain and creativity. He confessed he often paints with his non-dominant without even realizing it. “Making paintings is what I do. I’ve always enjoyed it,” Kelver said. He affirmed he’s fortunate; “if my life spikes now it’s because of me.” View more of Richard Kelver works and class schedules at Upper Bay Frame & Gallery or visit www.upperbayframe.com or email artist at underthepaint@gmail.com.

LAKEWOOD’S HAMMERMAN WINS J/80 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP Lakewood Yacht Club racer Steve Hammerman came in first in this year’s J/80 North American Championship held Oct. 8 – 11 on Galveston Bay. Racers from across the United States came to compete in this prestigious regatta.

Fall “Chili Chase” November 7 • Galveston Bay

This is the second time in Hammerman’s racing career that he has claimed first place in this J/80 event. Crewing for Hammerman this year were Terry Flynn, who won the 2014 J/80 North American Championship and finished second at the Worlds and who joined the team as tactician and overall “speed motivator”, Alex Crowell, and Ann Graham. Their overall racing philosophy to earn first place, according to Hammerman, was concentrating on getting clean starts and getting to the favored side of the course early. “We also worked hard to change gears and maintain speed in the variable conditions,” he added. “The regatta was quite challenging. The changing conditions and stiff competition kept us on our toes until the final race was complete.” Looking back over the past few years, Hammerman stated that after Hurricane Ike in 2008, he put the boat in storage and took a hiatus from competitive sailing to concentrate on his family. He finally decided last winter to restore the boat and return it to racing. Crowell with Bahama Rigging helped him coordinate and complete the project. With a new mast, David Whelan of Gulf Coast Marine Services repainted the entire hull. “It took a lot of time and work to put the boat back together,” explained Hammerman, “but I am pleased with the outcome.”

CHARLIE TABOADA From Page 33 The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. I used to work for the Nielsen TV Ratings as a field representative. I would hook hard drives up to people’s television and report on their viewing. It was kind of surreal. Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. How do you feel about cleaning? Finish this sentence: "The state of the Texas craft beer scene is… ready to take over the world and possibly Mars. Favorite perk of working in a brewery is I get to “Wear shorts and sandals to work. Brewhouses are hot.”

THE SCENE

Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is I have to "figure out where that smell is coming from. Oh, wait. It’s me.” If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? I like Rouge’s dedication of farm to glass brewing. I think it would be great to work for a brewery that had the ability to grow their own ingredients and showcase local flavors.

BRETT BRAY: From Page 38 Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is I have to “balance my time between all of the things that need to be done. When you are a small two person brewery (where both still have day jobs) it becomes an effort to make time for all of the cleaning, and brewing, and cleaning

and kegging, and cleaning, and distributing and cleaning and paperwork (the worst by the way) and oh… did I mention the cleaning. We make a joke out of it. We say that it is like having to come home every day from your job, take your car totally apart, clean each piece and reassemble before going to work the next day. This is my squeegee… there are many like it but this one is mine…” If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? “Of the breweries I have visited, I would have to say Southern Star. They are great people and have a very nice mixture of ingenious improvisation and refinement. They take risks (sorry, the glitter beer… really? Haha) while staying true to who they are. It is paying off for them in a big way now.”

JAY PEEK Lead Brewer & Chef • Gordon Street Tavern Favorite Texas beer? Jester King - Funk Metal Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? Jolly Pumpkin - Luciernaga Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? “Anything! Well if I had to pick, Easy Peasy Pumpkin Peachy. It started as a home brew response to ABInBev's Superbowl advertisement this year, and now it is on draught at Gordon Street Tavern.”

CHARLIE TABOADA

What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? “Yeast driven flavors like Bavarian style hefeweizens, Belgian anything. Everyone is still hung up on the hop bomb IPA's, but the trend does seem to be changing with some of the more balanced but still flavorful stuff. Also session beers that have great flavor, but are under 4% alcohol.” Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? “Winning a Gold at GABF, and having a beer at the after party.” Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? “A cool fall day on the river in New Braunfels, grilling and introducing friends to what great beer tastes like.”

brewery is I get to “brew beer! I get to take some chances and make beer that not everyone that comes in is familiar with. When they try it and say "That is one of the best beers I have ever had" it just makes my day.” Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is I have to wash kegs and clean the kettles. But It is really not that bad. If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? “Jester King. They do fantastic stuff with wild yeast, cool ships and local ingredients. I would love to work there just to learn more about that aspect of brewing.”

The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. “Being a butcher/chef for a steak house. Some similarities in curing meat and brewing. Similar process, very different but very delicious results to both!”

CHARLIE TABOADA

Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. “Never stop learning. Do not be afraid to volunteer at a local brewery. Try beers you have never had before. Be able JAY PEEK to accept honest criticism on your beer, and always strive to make the best beer possible.”

Lead Brewer • Beerfoot Brewpub Favorite Texas brewed beer? Oasis Metamodern IPA

Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? On both accounts our Eagle Claw double IPA. We do continuous 90 minute editions of galaxy, nelson sauvin, experimental 5256, and falconer’s flight hops. It’s an exercise in excess. What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? Right now people are really geeking out about beers with big flavors like double ipas, imperial stouts, barrel aged beers, and sours. Any style that is middle of the road tends to be considered an average or mediocre beer even if it is true to style. There’s a lot to be said about brewing easy drinking sessionable beers like lagers. Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? Drinking a fresh IPA out of the bright tank in the Yakima Valley on a hop farm during harvest. Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? When the weather is nice and we can open the garage door at Beerfoot the setting is pretty spectacular especially at night with the Pleasure Pier lit up. But I feel like the best part of the craft community is the comradery. Any place with good friends, beer, and ambiance can make for an ideal setting. - Continued on Page 32

One Eyed Doll impressed me most for being a national touring band from Austin complete with a local following and a show that’s open to 12+ year olds. IT’S A WRAP - The late Yogi Berra was one of my most favorite philosophers. I can hear him saying something like: Live music is like a dog. Always there to comfort you, entertain you, encourage you, muse you, and would love nothing more than to catch a Frisbee with you in the park enjoying the moment. I would liken the many fantastic venues we have here on the SCENE as like the park and Frisbee where you can take in a dog or two and enjoy the moment. <vbgrin> Okay, so I’m not Yogi… Shifting gears… As we turn the corner in 2015 and head into the holiday season, we hope that this year has worked out well for you, that you have been able to partake of the good food, drinks and live music happenings out and about on the SCENE because we’ve got a hunch all you good people out there deserve it. Things will no doubt start getting hectic on the holiday front, and we hope that the upcoming months are kind to you, your family and your friends. And remember, when things start getting a bit stuffy around the house, make like you’re taking the dog out to the park for an afternoon of Frisbee fetching by grabbing a copy of the SCENE and check out what is happening. Your soul will love you for it. Be sure to bring along your friends and family. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it, too! Cheers!

BREAKTIME - We were in Galveston hanging out when “Patricia” come to town. Thought we’d pull a Bennie Brasket and drop into the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe to catch up with the Myrna Sanders Band before their well-deserved upcoming winter break. Over the years, Myrna and her group has been part of a special circle of musicians that have been true to the music, a hoot-load of kick-butt rocking fun, always warm and friendly to the fans, and like our hometown Astros, have had a really great year deserving of a well-earned rest. And with that, we say cheers to a great run, and we will catch up again down the road!

Jackie’s Brickhouse. Good Time, Fun Crowd Award goes to Cock-eyed Seagull. Thinking how cool it would be on the entire SCENE on Halloween... Music-wise, the bands at all three venues were top-caliber, perfect picks for the celebrated evening. Eman And the Sun Dogs is an interesting story as this family band from South America takes root and musically expands here in the region. I suspect people will be seeing more of this fun cover band soon. The Fuse was a high-energy dance band that plays the Texas and Louisiana circuit. The fact that Jackie’s would bring these folks in, makes sense. Looking at their upcoming calendar, this is a show that won’t be here that often and I suggest for a good night out, you catch these cats whenever you can. - Continued on Page 34

The album is a collection of two brilliantly mixed genres, Parrot Head beach music and matter-of-fact in your face country which surprises the bejeezus out of me as to why I haven’t heard this stuff before. Yes, it’s not likely to see one wearing cowboy boots and long denim while on a sailboat as it would be to wear sandals and cutoffs in the rugged country outdoors; yet when you get to the heart of the matter, these two genres mesh together perfectly, sharing common ideals and likings. “Last Song of the Summer” has made it onto my album of the year list. Pick up a copy, and put it on your list too! On perhaps the finest weekend of the month, the crowds came out in mass to T-Bone Tom’s. SKYLER FORSHAGE: From Page 49 What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? “Sometimes while brewing and drinking craft beer we get caught up using a bunch of specialty ingredients and trying to come up with really out-there flavors, but sometimes just a plain old pale ale can be easily overlooked.” Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? “I hope to travel through Belgium one day and visit as many breweries as possible. Stopping by Cantillon would be a really great experience and something I look forward to.” Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? “You can't beat a good bottle share. Having a bunch of people get together, bringing their favorite beers, making new friends, and getting to share your thoughts on all the beer that everyone has brought. I'll take a bottle share over a festival any day.” The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. “I have held just about every job under the sun at this point and I've done a lot of interesting things. I was a banker during the financial crisis of 2008 and it was interesting to see what caused all the problems we had then and how much we still haven't been able to recover. It's what made me realize I would rather be doing something I love and not making much money than making a lot of money and hating what I do.” Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. “It's not easy. It takes an incredible amount of passion, determination, blood, sweat, and tears. It can also be an incredible experience. Never stop trying to improve, never stop asking questions, and stay humble.” The state of the Texas craft beer scene is “getting better. There's been so much growth in the past five years despite laws that work against us. It's certainly shaping up into one of the most unique beer scenes in the country.” Favorite perk of working in a brewery is I get to “drink free beer. I'm not

THE SCENE

sure if there's any other appropriate answer to this question..” Least favorite aspect of working in a brewery is I have to clean the mash tun. After a brew day is over there's about 3000 pounds worth of spent grain that needs to be shoveled out and then the tun has to be scrubbed clean. It's exhausting work but at the same time it's a great work out. If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? “Probably a brewery in another state or perhaps even a different country. We have to deal with a lot of incredibly specific and restrictive laws that have been created since the prohibition of alcohol and it's repeal, both on a state and federal level. Most of it makes very little sense and serves no purpose other than to make it harder for smaller breweries to succeed. Not having to deal with the unnecessary bureaucracy would be nice..”

BRETT BRAY: From Page 49 Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? “I am a very big believer in our Bound and Determined Chile Stout. It is a fun beer to work with and I think will be one that we will be well known for. I am looking forward to seeing it barrel aged. (Surprised???)” What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? “I feel that the simple classics are being overlooked. Everyone is in a rush to put out “NEW” that they forget that most beer consumers in general want something simple that they can have with dinner. Give me a well-crafted Amber or Blonde and I am happy.” Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? “As an avid diver, I have always wanted to go to the Great Barrier Reef. I would love to have a pint under the Southern stars, 100 miles from the nearest city lights, with my feet dangling off the side of the boat in the water hoping that a tiny little box jelly-fish does not come along and ruin the moment.” Describe your favorite setting or

38

event which you have enjoyed a beer? “My favorite single glass of beer was the first one (a Laelaps IPA) at our launch party at Gordon’s Street Tavern in local Alvin. You just can’t beat tasting your beer from your first tap!” The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. “I have done many jobs in my life: Athletic Trainer, Paramedic, Research Biologist, Astrobiologist. My favorite job (until now) was working with NASA’s Human Research Facility developing experiments to find out how the body adapts to a micro-gravity environment. I helped develop the first experiment performed on the International Space Station. It was giving electric shocks to the crew to test their reflexes… (dance for me!). Just kidding… they could not even feel the shocks, just their muscles twitching at bit. I really enjoyed working with all of the NASA folks and the crew who were/are some of the smartest and most dedicated people you could ask to work with. It was the one job where I really felt I was making a difference to mankind as a whole.” Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. “Go talk to as many different breweries as possible. As a community, we are very willing to help each other out and support the up and coming breweries. Join the Brewer’s Guild and start going to the meetings. (Shout out to Dave at Southern Star and the Royo family with No Label for all of their help).” The state of the Texas craft beer scene is…. “hard at work developing some of the best beers in the nation (See results of GABF 2015). Go Texas!” Favorite perk of working in a brewery is I get to “see my hard work coming together. Working for a large company, you feel like part of a machine that you can never see where it is going. In the act of conceiving, planning, and building a brewery, you see your work and your determination take shape, start to come together and take off. You know that it is because of your direct effort (or lack there off) that the endeavor succeeds or does not.”

THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE with the help of a Houston Art Alliance grant. Why there are not more of these collaborations being produced, I’ve no idea, but this one definitely scores an over-the-top mention. More please? Orq and his band puts forth an instrumental and vocal purity, adding a resonator and cigar box to go along with his already bluesy Stratocaster, all played with magical soulful artistry. Soulful City is a musical mosaic of the place we call Houston and belongs in everybody’s collection daily rituals. Speaking of rituals, may I recommend grabbing a handful of The Mighty Orq’s “Have A Merry Christmas” as stocking stuffers for all your relatives, friends and neighbors? You can pick up your supply along with Soulful City at any of his shows at the merch table. Got it?

LOOSE NOTES:

IT’S AN ATTITUDE - And sometimes, it’s simply what we seek which comes about when we enjoy our great patio seasons with friends, food, drink and live music. This month, those stops included TBone Tom’s (Rhythm & Rain), Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack (Smith & Dyess), Noah’s Ark (Denny Davis), and the Oleanders Jazz Brunch (Bob Henschen Sextet with Cassandra Tyson). Going last to first, the Jazz Brunch was a totally delightful afternoon hosted by the region’s musical godparents, Andy & Vickie Upchurch at the Oleanders in San Leon. Complete with a newly installed Aquaponics system installed by Celestine Gardens (Google them), this musical and spiritual refuge provided a much-needed relaxing shot in the arm. Not sure why this region doesn’t have as much jazz as it should. It’s creative, innovative, intelligent. Up the road, we caught the Denny Davis band in the Parrots Nest at Noah’s Ark last month and scored a copy of his CD, “Last Song Of The Summer” - Quite a fitting title indeed. - Continued on Page 36

TONE MONSTERS, PART II - It’s been about 5 years since we last caught the Mighty Orq – that was back at Clifton By The Sea (a place many wouldn’t mind returning to its stature as a historical music gathering spot on the Bay). In October, we reconnected with Ghengis at Katie’s – arguably the finest music listening room in the entire Houston metroplex – where there’s never that silly inner-loop cover charge. Gracing the stage that evening included a guest appearance with Bob Emmons on bass and Annika Chambers singing a set for a hoot of an evening adding fun to go with captivating tone monster solos from the Mighty Orq himself. Since the last time we took in a Mighty Orq show, Ghengis has produced a CD, Soulful City,

LOOSE NOTES: From Page 43 Following their enjoyable set, Ken joined up with “In Altum,” a new and great-sounding project headed up by James Herrington along with Matt Ligrani, and Ken (vox and axe), David Rios (caretaker of the Cassette Tape gorilla on percussion) and Brandon Robbins on the kit. This was the first time I got to hear them. I’m putting them on my watch list and new band of the year list. Musically, they play an interesting assortment of originals one would expect to hear on movie soundtracks and on the FM radio. According to James, In Altum’s next show will be November 21 at the Cottonwood Pup. They’re busy writing new material for an album due out next year.

key, squeezing in whatever rifts are possible, sort of like the NBA pregame shoot around warm-ups but with these guys, once their sound guy gets all levels dialed in right, they head straight into orbit. Not quite like Phish or the Grateful Dead, but with a bit more primal frenzy perfect for trance and dance grooving. I’m not exactly sure who the leader of this band is as they all keep it together in a cohesive collective. Perhaps as all community villages should operate and on this day, a perfect headline act for this fine El Jardin festival. Well done, all!

Headlining Bayfest this year was Cassette Tape. This band tweaked my interest years ago. I finally figured out that it’s their opening sound and sound check routine where the gang would vamp around an 8/3 in some obscure

TONE MONSTERS, PART 1 - We caught the Moondog Duet of Danny D and Ravin’ Dave at the Cock & Bull in October. Over the decades, these two guitar heroes have played the area live and these days put forth some of the finest tone, not merely by piping their signal through humongous tube amps, (think tequila) but more so with skillful articulations on their instruments along with their vocal purity. Much more like a well-aged scotch whiskey or brandy… It’s very easy to kick back and enjoy the evening with these two on stage with songs spanning the decades along with good company sharing fine food and drink with intelligent conversation. It’s also fun hearing these two play with a full band. When I asked them each when their next Cold Feet show was, both said, “That’s a GREAT question! I’ll have to call Donny and find out.” Can’t wait! - Continued on Page 39

Featured Bartender:

AMANDA @ EASY STREET How long have you been a bartender + How long at Easy Street: I've been bartender a little over 5 years, and I've been here at Easy Street for about 2 Avelina Casanova photo and a half years. What do you love about working at Easy Street? The people I work with are great! We all get along and work together to make new drinks and make the bar better. The owners give us so much freedom to create and plan cool events and parties and are open to all the ideas we have. -- And our customers! They are amazing. We are like “Cheers.” Come on in a few times, and you'll feel right at home in no time. It's just like a giant family. YOUR favorite day of the week to work at Easy Street & why? Friday of course! We have a live band and everybody is just cutting loose and dancing and having a great time which puts a big dorky smile on my face. Do you have a Signature drink? I take alot of pride in my Bloody Marys. All of the veggies we put in our Bloody Marys are locally made by friends of Easy Street, so they are unlike anywhere else. To me, it's like creating art. What makes a great bartender: (1) Personality is key. Nobody wants a boring bartender. You must be eager to learn. Bartending is a learning curve, and there is not a bartender in the WORLD who knows it all. There's always room for improvement. (2) Patience is a must. Not everybody knows what they want to drink. People like to talk to their bartender. Whether it's good news or bad, they want to tell you about it. 3) And as much as we try here at Easy Street, you can't make everyone happy all the time, which can be frustrating. But you still try with a polite smile on your face.

Loose Notes hand it to these good people for being able to keep this annual festival alive over the years by keeping things simple and fun without getting carried away. Aside from the good eats and fun things for the family was the cool music line up this year with what could best be described as the Ken Valentino and Lucy Fulton Family Circle. The duet of Ken and Lucy (probably one of the area’s best-kept musical secrets) opened the festival on this splendid pre-El Niño weekend. Well, the Astros didn’t get to play in the final game of the year, but I’m still delighted from something that was least expected. CINCO DE CABO Cabo celebrates 5th Anniversary Saturday, November. 21 Make plans to attend Cabo’s five-year anniversary bash on Saturday, November 21. Enjoy live music from The Slags and drink specials all night. A fun time will be had by all! “Cabo’s atmosphere reflects the heart of our patrons,” said Cabo founder Greg Williams. “We appreciate the community support, our new visitors, and regular customers, and the family of musicians who perform the best live music on the lake!” Cabo is located at 2513 NASA Parkway in Seabrook. This waterfront venue on Clear Lake is a premier place to unwind, let loose, and just have a good time any day of the week. The term “A.W.O.L.” (After Work On the Lake) has become more than a battle cry on Fridays. A.W.O.L. has become the much-appreciated transition from work to play on the weekend. The friendly crowd that assembles at Cabo knows how to have some fun! The venue is spacious and has numerous entertainment amenities such as: a pool table, ping pong table, darts, electronic games, jumbo-sized Jenga blocks, a foosball table, Cornhole, and a Connect 4 game. and specials on weekday nights, and over the weekends. There are specials upstairs and downstairs in the Beach Bar, too. The downstairs Beach Bar is completely decked with a fullservice bar, stage, and DJ booth. It should be mentioned that there isn’t a bad seat in the house upstairs at Cabo whether listening to live music or watching various sporting events. Inside, the cozy fireplace sitting area has been a popular spot to sit and relax among friends. Or even coworkers… Cabo is an ideal venue to host holiday parties and special events as well. Their kitchen can cater your event and will be unveiling a new menu soon. Cabo has beautiful views from their over-sized deck. It’s a great place to have lunch or dinner, drinks, listen to live musical entertainment, and have a blast playing games. Arrive by car or boat. The point is to just get there! - Rhonda Meredith

Favorite Texas beer? “It would take me several days of research (see: drinking) to appropriately answer this question. There are way too many great Texas brews to name a favorite.” Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? “Again, i'm not sure if I could name a favorite but I do always keep a few bottles of St. Bernardus Abt 12 and Rodenbach Grand Cru on hand at home.”

Last Month You Met:

SKYLER FORSHAGE

Your favorite beer to brew and/or your favorite beer that you brew? “One of my favorite beers to brew is Toasted Mermaid, a brown ale brewed with toasted pecans and wheat. The smell of those fresh toasted pecans is enough to make anyone fall in love before you even take a sip.” - Continued on Page 38

BRETT BRAY Lead Brewer & Co-Owner Fetching Lab Brewery Favorite Texas beer? “That is a tough one. What Day of the week is it? What is the Temperature? What am I eating? If I had to pick one, it would most likely be St. Arnold’s Bishop Barrels. I love the whole class of Barrel Aged beers and will try any of them.” Favorite non-Texas brewed beer? “Given the previous question; it should be of no surprise for me to say Founders – KBS. Though we do have two bottles of Sam Adams Utopia we are slowly working on and they are quite a remarkable piece of technical brewing.” - Cont. on Page 38

Will Play For “Scootch” Saturday, December 12 @ Ronnie’s Ice House By Rhonda Meredith The Bay Area is a tight community. If you don’t know someone, chances are you know someone who knows that person. This is what makes us all related – like a big family. Well, one of our own was in a major accident that resulted in a portion of his left leg to be amputated. On October 17, Matt “Scootch” Appelby, the bass player for The Grizzly Band, was struck by a vehicle while assisting a friend with car trouble on the side of the road in Louisiana. He was headed to a motorcycle event and this accident was through no fault of his own. The League City native has had more than four surgeries since this time; including the amputation and its follow-ups, procedures to close up skin rips, and also skin grafts.
