InDaSkies:
Spreading Unity Through Music
By Rhonda Meredith This has been a banner year for InDaSkies. “2015 has been a year of positive change for us a great amount of hard work was put in with some great memories along the way,” said Joe Serrato (vocals, guitar).
Blaggards Thurs., Dec. 10 T-BONES TOM’S
Their groovy music style blends reggae, roots, dance hall, dub, and rock with an undeniable “Texas flair” distinguishes InDaSkies with a sound of its own. “We aim to spread positivity, camaraderie, and unity through music,” said Steve McDonald (drums, vocals). “When you leave an InDaSkies show, you take with you this positive energy that you feel that you're a part of. We're putting out there what we want to see in the world, and that's positive vibrations.”
AL White Sat., Dec. 12 JACKIE’S BRICKHOUSE
InDaSkies had some really cool gigs to spread those vibes in 2015. “We're honored to have shared the stage with some really talented musicians,” said McDonald. The band has performed all over the Bay Area, Galveston, Houston, and San Antonio supporting and performing with Fortunate Youth, 40 Oz. to Freedom, The Steppas, Sol Seed, Stranger, Idiginis, Cassette Tape, Hardy & Co., Gaby Veray, and many more. “Another memorable moment was recording our first single "The Show Must Go On" for the Will Play For Food Vol. 4 compilation CD,” said Serrato. “It pushed us to a tighter sound of an uphill adventure of what is to come.”
hed pe/Alien Ant Farm Wed., Dec. 16
InDaSkies is keeping busy for sure with area gigs. Mark your calendar now for the “Will Play For Scootch” benefit set to begin at noon on Saturday, December 12 at Ronnie’s Ice House located at 4355 FM 517 in Dickinson. In October, Matt “Scootch” Appelby, a League City resident and local musician, was struck by a vehicle while assisting a friend with car trouble on the side of the road in Louisiana. At press time, InDaSkies is scheduled to perform at 1:30 p.m. “Scootch is a good friend of mind, old roommate, past member,” said Serrato. “He was the person who actually thought of the InDaSkies name.” Performing on stage is huge for InDaSkies. “We love playing and we love the energy and the vibe that resonates among everyone in the place,” said McDonald. “It's a rush for us, and when people respond positively to what we bring it rewards our efforts and gives us the motivation to keep working and bringing new original music. Plus it’s just great to know that people dig it.” - Continued on Page 36

Texas Beer Enthusiast 2015: THE YEAR OF CRAFT BEER U.S. Brewery Count Reaches All-Time High of 4,144
The total number of U.S. breweries reached a record level in 2015, according to a year-end review from the Brewers Association—the not-forprofit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers. As of the end of November, there are now 4,144 breweries in the country, topping the historic high of 4,131 breweries in 1873.

“This is a remarkable achievement, and it’s just the beginning,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Beer has always been a hallmark of this country and it is even more apparent today as America’s beer culture continues to expand.”
Of note in 2015 (Brewers Association): • Brewery openings now exceed two a day. • Fifteen states are now home to more than 100 breweries: California, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Wisconsin & Indiana. • IPA remained the top style sold by independent craft brewers, and continues to grow faster than the overall craft category. • Data shows that “locally made” is important to over half of craft beer buyers.

Loose Notes by Andy Eng
Happy Holidays Everyone! I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving with friends and family finding good reason to celebrate for coming out ahead, balancing the ledger book of life. Moreover, a special shout out to all you good readers out there who brought comfort to those in need… Hear, hear !!!
of his prior projects and about a different parts of his life. The first surprise I got was gandering at the da Vinci style cover artwork. The second surprise was my MP3 player telling me I was listening to Country & Folk and so we played on.... In Daniel Levinson’s book, “The Seasons of a Man’s Life”, it’s written that history has an abundance of examples from those in their Young-Old phase of life, integrating their life’s experiences into masterful presentations only possible from having accomplished a full set of life’s experiences - Destiny’s Fate seems to serve as such an example. In a quick run down of this 10 song compilation: A McGuire album would not be complete without a testament that life is good, of the refuge found on the islands near the water and opening song “Any Better Than This” along with “Barnacles” provides that baseline. “Barnacles” is a pleasant musical surprise with a splash of big air horn playing that hinted of a Gerry Referty, Baker’s Street - A mix that goes well with coastal breezes. Further into the album, “Seventeen” on the ever so important wonder years of life when one the certainty of uncertainties awaiting ahead. “Coming Home” has a fun upbeat swing complete with a wailing saxophone that had me thinking Clarence of the E-Street Band might have sat in and a sure addition to the party song playlist. The title track, “Destiny & Fate,” is a surprising country ballad which I’m going to guess must be from McGuire’s roots prior to his total coastal baptism. Shifting gears and in a matter-of-fact way, “The Flood” provides listeners insight into what makes Kelly tick as a person in nothing less than an “aha” moment, the content of which could make for an entire movie – It’s that vast of a song. - Continued on Page 37
DESTINY & FATE - We checked out the Black Friday dinner crowd at T-Bone’s in November and sure enough, happened upon a full house enjoying a dinner concert and an attitude adjustment fix from the Kelly McGuire Band. Kelly has a way of making everybody feel at home wherever he plays which these days is pretty much a full year across the continent of North America. A big treat was scoring a copy of his 6th CD, Destiny & Fate, now available at www.redfishisland.com in time for the holidays. When I chatted with Kelly about this project back in February, he described it as a totally different sound unlike any

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 38 No album is complete without songs addressing relationships and McGuire offers three works: “You Drive Me Crazy,” “Broken Pieces” and “Where Love Goes.” I suspect that after listening to these musical arrangements, fans will soon be specifying for the entire band at future house concerts. How does he do all this? The song about “The Song” pretty much sums everything up as the final cut on this fine album. I guess my only disappointment is not knowing where I can get a chance to catch Kelly perform the songs on this album live, with the full complement of instruments tastefully arranged, I want to be there, it should be a burner of a show. hall. The Slags presented nearly an entire set of new songs not often heard, a sign of never giving up, never growing stale. At Cabo’s Monday Open Mic, Cisco and Angie pulled a surprise bringing in Daphne Lee Martin and Francis Lombardi (from Connecticut and New Jersey) on their eight-week cross country tour. Times have changed considerably over the decades when in the past, two musicians would travel across the U.S. living out of a Volkswagen bus playing for tips. These days, the young traveling musicians are often packed with CDs and self-promote through social media. The albums I scored from Daphne and Francis, titled Fall On Your Sword and Whiskey & The Mourning After. CONGRATS - To the folks at Cabo on their 5th Anniversary! This place pulls one of the area’s stronger late-night crowds that often don’t leave the house until after many others’ bed time. To borrow the mantra from the F-117 squadrons, “We Own the Night” would seem appropriate to these vibrant young people. We caught two events at Cabo in November, the Anniversary Bash with The Slags on stage and the Monday evening open mic hosted this particular week by Angie & Cisco. Everybody around these parts knows about the Slags. In my opinion, their best show of the year came at Cafe Adobe after the dinner crowd and kids cleared the room with Randy Wall sitting in on keyboard and the band cranking up and showcasing a brilliant performance of “The Wall” in the cavernous acoustic

Martin is clearly a complex composer/arranger with Fall On Your Sword, her fourth full-length album and first self-produced effort. Making its way onto the College Music charts Martin appears to craft her songs similarly to methods used by Alan Parsons and Led Zeppelin, composing a song about situations found from “stories we heard as children” encompassing memories of fables, fairy tales, Bible stories, mythology, poetry, cautionary tales, traditional folk songs, and American popular culture of the 20th century. Fall On Your Sword was recorded with 25 of the finest musicians Daphne has met on her extensive US tours with elements of hot jazz, indie folk, latin, opera, hip-hop, and cinematic pop. Pretty impressive and possibly a standard. My comments from researching Lombardi’s, Whiskey & The Mourning After spurs me not to write about the songs but rather the vast network of people it took, coming together to produce this album. We all know the demise of the megalabel and the proliferation of the DIYers in the music industry. Lombardi’s network are all Indie and interesting was how as a collective, all support each other’s works which makes a lot of sense community wise and something we like to see even in our own local music industry. Moreover, what is interesting is seeing how well the music holds up when presented to those beyond the sphere where acceptance is often guaranteed. That a composition is capable of stirring thoughts or causing the listener to move -- no doubt, something aspiring writers ponder at times. - Continued on Page 35

InDaSkies: Continued from Page 48 So how does InDaSkies come up with original music? “Most of the writing process is done individually starting from a melody or idea that we want to express to the listener,” said Serrato. “We are a team that works well with each other so we try and bring the idea to practice as a finished product then everyone adds their parts to the idea to create a song. Some songs have also been created just by jamming at practice and working out the kinks as we go. We are lucky that everyone can adds their two cents and be a part of the writing process.” Along with Serrato and McDonald, InDaSkies is comprised of Charlie Glen (bass, vocals); Mike Heilman (hand percussion, FX); Kristen Heilman (keys, vocals); and Bradley Mangrum (trumpet, vocals). “The band has grown in many ways since the start,” said McDonald. “We've grown in size, we've grown closer together as people, and we've grown together as musicians. The process of incorporating our musical personalities has transformed how we play and what we sound like.” Serrato adds, “I think the people would be surprised to know that all of the members hold down a real day job and that we do this only to put a smile on the fans faces.” No matter how accomplished InDaSkies felt in 2015, the excitement is building as 2016 approaches. InDaSkies is anticipating the recording their first EP for a spring release. They are also planning a mini Texas tour and to expand their fan base. “We want to give the fans something to listen to whenever they want,” said Serrato. “Our goal is to provide a feel good vibe when you listen to our music and bring people together in a positive way. THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE Andy Upchurch’s comment on checking out musical duets being good cuz with only two players, it’s hard to cover anybody’s mistakes. In that sense, soloists take it to the limit and have we got some good ones in our area (Cisco, Hardy, Wolfe, Shannon, Bradshaw, Michaels, Anicira to name a few). Satterwhite, a Clear Lake area graduate has studied vocals since age 15 including time in Austin and Concordia College. When I asked why he returned here, he mentioned several reasons: One of the more enlightening was that this area was more laid-back than life in Austin. Go figure... And if you’re in the neighborhood needing a neighborhood bar with live music to hang out at, check out Easy Street Lounge. Got it?
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 37 TAPERS - Was the term used to describe those recording live music performances before the day of modern cell phones. Ricky Pitts along with Hot Rod Rodrigues and The Sharks let me tape their shows at The Sandbar almost a decade ago, so when I heard they were playing in the same neighborhood, at Aspens, I knew this was a show worth checking out. This band sounds a bit different each show as frontman, Hot Rod, is always trying out some new axe or amp. The Sharks play what is known as “Blues with a Bite” veering to the edgy side of cover rock center that meshes well at neighborhood bars such as Outriggers and Aspen’s. Speaking of neighborhood bars...
PIZAZZ - It’s been over a year since we last caught some Kaos and their new vocalist “M.” I like how they list their genre as “Everything.” I knew this was going to be a good show when I saw they also added Dale Lance - Sound engineer and Eric Wolfe - Stage Lighting… Smart band. Things have been changing a bit in the region with first aerospace getting the whammy and now oil & gas weathering present lows. - Continued on Page 33

take the stage of the Thanksgiving holidays to show their chops. Where is A.D. when you need him? We’ve got a couple good ones here. The first group we caught goes by the name of ORR and includes Jason West (Vocals). Mike Haseman (Guitar). Brent McMahon (Bass). Gonzo Merino (Drums). Josh Dryer (Guitar/Synth). We caught this local group for the first time at the Will Play for Food show this past summer, was impressed with them and interested in a followup this second time around. Aside from being a tight knit precision decibel production machine, I was very impressed on how well the band sounded. Each instrument came through cleanly within overall sonic spectrum versus the traditional heap of stacked volumes piled on top of each other. It was actually close to ‘70s-quality clarity. Gold star to the band and definitely for Scout Bar soundman Reuben for getting the sound through the board and into the house. - Continued on Page 32
LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 35 The region has diversified a fair amount so like many, curious on how things will play out. Throughout all of this, one thing I do know is that over the years, whatever is happening at Jackie’s Brickhouse tends to be a leading indicator for the region. Also with that, aside from seeing great shows, awesome fundraisers, fun tournaments, and such I think that seeing more and more people partake of the awesome eats at the Brickhouse and the fact that they now accept reservations has “got” to be the clue. To be continued…. Scout Bar - Over the years, Scout Bar has been the place for many hard metal touring bands. It was a pleasant treat seeing two local heavy metal groups

day season, that special time for the kids, both young and old. This is a time where I never mind turning life’s speed dial to SLOW IT DOWN. If you find it within your abilities, passing along cheer to those in need is always a good thing and best when done personally.
The second heavy metal group we took in goes by the name of Their Name Was Treason including Hunter Story - Vocals Patrick Gamble -Vocals Jordan Castillo - Guitar/Vocals Tom Striker - Guitar Elijah Santucci - Drums Oscar Gonzales - Bass. I tried to research these guys and ended up with a Site Not Found from their Facebook link, so they’re likely a fun young group that spends lots of time rehearsing. I say that because they feature dual lead vocalists that reminds me of Gilmour and Waters in Run, but these guys do it up a level and for the entire show. I’m not sure if my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt ever went to Scout Bar much, but if he were around these days, I would convince him to catch a Treason show, and I’m pretty sure he would’ve declared the show that night worthy of a “Bravo!”
As 2015 draws to an end, we’ve seen lots of things happening in the area that may have been uncomfortable for a few, an opportunity for others and an experience for the rest. However your year turned out, we hope to find you in good health, honest prosperity and ready for the year ahead. We hope you find a friendly place to hoist up a mug of Auld Lang Syne - If not at home, than with us out and about on The SCENE where good things are always happening. INDEPENDENCE PLAZA: Cont. From Page 26
being performed at NASA.
Accessible via an elevator tower or stairs, visitors will enter both the shuttle and the airplane. In the shuttle, they will see the flight deck, mid-deck, payload bay and exhibits.
The exhibit complex will host educational programs and be used for special and private events in and around the plane. Learn more at spacecenter.org/independence and plan your visit at spacecenter.org/visitor.
The airplane will have seven dynamic areas that explore innovation, science and technology. Visitors will learn how the plane was retrofitted to carry the shuttle. Supporting Space Center Houston’s educational mission, the exhibits also emphasize problem-solving concepts and possible career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It honors those who designed, built and flew in America’s Space Shuttle Program by recounting stories from astronauts, engineers and pilots. The plaza shows the key role NASA Johnson Space Center played in the shuttle’s development and looks to the future through the research currently
Entry to the smaller shuttle will require free reservations while the larger plane will rely on a first-come, first-served line. An online reservation system will go live in January to allow visitors to obtain a timed ticket for the shuttle prior to their visit, as well as at the center. Members will enjoy exclusive tours of the exhibit during the first few months of opening. Purchase a Membership for a few dollars more than full-price admission and become a part of the foundation’s mission. Return free as often as you like during the year with free parking, special events and much more. The Manned Space Flight Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit space museum with an extensive science education program. The cornerstone of its science education mission is Space Center Houston, which USA Today called “The Big Draw” in the greater Houston area with nearly 1 million visitors annually and a $45 million economic impact on the greater Houston area. Space Center Houston is Houston’s first and only Smithsonian Affiliate and the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Center. The center draws more than 100,000 teachers and students annually from around the world. For more information, go to www.spacecenter.org.
Roughly $2.2 million of the $12 million capital campaign called Bring the Legacy Home is still needed. Please join the many generous donors in honoring the remarkable story of the shuttle program and inspiring the next generation of explorers to forge their own way in this amazing universe. SPACE CENTER HOUSTON prepares to open INDEPENDENCE PLAZA One-of-a-Kind, International Exhibit debuts to the World, January 23
Nov. 18, 2015
Something big will open at the nonprofit Space Center Houston in January. The newest international landmark, Independence Plaza, will open its doors to a one-of-a-kind, interactive experience featuring the first shuttle carrier aircraft, NASA 905, and the high-fidelity shuttle replica Independence. John Ennis photos
April 28, 2014
“Our new exhibit complex redefines the ultimate museum experience,” said Richard E. Allen Jr., president and CEO of the educationally focused museum, Space Center Houston. “Visitors from all over the world will walk through an unprecedented experience and learn about the accomplishments of the Space Shuttle Program and why the future of space exploration is still vitally important.” The nonprofit will debut the mammoth new exhibit on January 23 with a triumphant grand opening at 8:30 a.m. The center doors open at 9 a.m. to celebrate and honor America’s space program with a full day of activities. Visitors will hear from astronauts, pilots and special guests who were critical in the Shuttle Program, have fun with interactive, educational activities and enjoy special photograph opportunities with heroes from the past and present. The eight-story multiple-exhibit complex is the biggest project for the nonprofit since the center opened in 1992. Bringing the 30-year Shuttle Program legacy to life, Independence Plaza features hands-on activities, multimedia displays and NASA artifacts – all inside a shuttle replica mounted on top of the Boeing 747 shuttle carrier aircraft (SCA). Exhibition displays will immerse visitors in the science and history of the shuttle era. Visitors will explore the SCA that ferried orbiters 223 times and now carries the high-fidelity shuttle replica Independence, the world’s only shuttle mounted on an SCA and the only place where the public will be able to enter both. A dramatic look underneath the shuttle carrier aircraft and inside the lower fuselage will give visitors an up-close look inside the engineering marvel.

The jumbo-sized complex will give visitors a rare glimpse into the ingenuity of the historic shuttle era and the NASA breakthroughs and technological advances gained from the shuttle program which impacted future exploration. - Continued on Next Page
One By Air + One By Sea = Best Shuttle Attraction As any of my Facebook friends can testify, I was more than a little “upset” when the home of the Space Shuttle program got passed over in NASA’s distribution of the remaining orbiters. And don’t even get me started on New York City’s “bait-and-switch” maneuver to land the Enterprise. But I embraced our high-fidelity Shuttle replica from the start knowing it would offer visitors a much more interactive experience than simply admiring the shape and scale of a real shuttle from a distance. Add the fact that our “shuttle” was transported here by water, and the fit for our waterfront community seems that much more appropriate. Back in September 2012, I admired NASA’s extensively modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) doing a series of low-level fly-bys over the Clear Lake area while ferrying the Endeavour to its final home in California. Little did I know then, that the 747 would eventually be returning from California and making its permanent home here at Space Center Houston as part of what will become the ultimate shuttle attraction and destination. - John Ennis, Publisher

“STINGER” CAPTURES LAKEWOOD’S YACHT OF THE YEAR AWARD Sailing Calendar At the Annual Awards Ceremony held at Lakewood Yacht Club on the morning of Sat., Nov. 14, Fleet Captain Ashley Walker announced that racer and club member Bee Bednar’s J/105 named “Stinger” captured the “Yacht of the Year” award for 2015. This is the second time that “Stinger” claimed this award as it also won in 2012. This annual trophy goes to the Lakewood Yacht Club boat that has the best score in club-hosted races on Galveston Bay and off the coast of Galveston in the Gulf of Mexico. The four regattas in which “Stinger” came in first place were Bay Cup I and II, the Shoe Regatta, and the Heald Bank Regatta in the Gulf of Mexico.

Lakewood Yacht Club Fleet Captain Ashley Walker (left) presented the ‘Yacht of the Year’ Bednar relates that with a first name like Bee, award to racer Bee Bednar for his J/105 named “Stinger” was a natural name for his J/105. When ‘Stinger’ at the club’s Annual Membership Meetasked about winning these races, he stated “mainteing held on Sat., Nov. 14 in the ballroom.
nance of the boat is the most important thing. You start to lose the race at the dock.” He also attributes his winning to a really good crew among which were his son Kevin, Charles Braddus, Marty Pedowicz, Steve Cooper, Pedro Geonatti, Reed Cleckler, Jeff Berger, Alex Freas, and Tony Chiesa. “It was also great fun to throw out a bullet,” Bednar added. By winning the four races which qualified “Stinger” as “Yacht of the Year”, Bednar also won the Texas Navy Trophy.

Area Photographer Publishes Book about a Saved Local Goose By Domino Taylor If your Christmas gift list needs a suggestion, a local woman has recently published her book on the adventures of local geese with an endearing story, along with her amazing photography. Roselyn Pierce-Shirley’s book is a great gift for the young and young at heart and any bird lover.
Goose-Z Gets a Second Chance: A true story by Goose-Z's human, Roselyn Pierce-Shirley, is the book that is a true story and heart-warming account of an old goose that loses his life-long mate, Lucy. His human, Rose-Z, buys a male and female for him and a chick is born. The old male adopts the new Kathleen Tacl reads the book to her grandchildren. family and is so grateful to get a second chance at a happy life. All ages have loved this new book. It is paperback and also in large print and contains 40 photos by the author. Goose –Z Gets a Second Chance, has 5 Star reviews and locals have enjoyed this story and beautiful photos of the new family of geese, which are not only saved, but treasured. After a thirty year career in real estate, Roselyn Pierce-Shirley retired in 2013 and her and husband, Dr. Joe Shirley, bought a second home in Galveston. Their primary home is in Clear Lake Shores. “While remodeling the canal home, the north wind blew water out of our canal and gorgeous roseate spoonbills, egrets and blue herons came into the canal to ‘fish’ for fish trapped in the shallow water. My husband bought me my first digital camera and I enrolled in Featherfest classes in Galveston”, said Roselyn. All these events opened a wonderful new path for her to express the artistic side of her that had to be put on hold because of a career. She now spends all her spare time stalking birds in Clear Lake Shores, Galveston, Harborwalk, Bolivar Island, Belize and South America. Roselyn is a member of the Audubon Society and Galveston Art League. She also is involved in many Kemah events as a volunteer and was selected and published in Coast Magazine in their feature article called ‘The Bird Stalker.’ Her work is for sale at various galleries and restaurants in the area. “I hope you enjoy my art and story about the geese,” she concluded.

Ghada Jundi Hashem: Continued from Page 19 As for Hashem’s art, many of her pieces are inspired by her travels. She informed, “My art is very different because of all my travels.” Hashem said she visits the “hearts or older areas of towns to capture the true culture by spending hours and hours collecting ideas.” Plus, Hashem doesn’t use just one art style. “That will affect your creativity,” she declared. Hashem paints with watercolor, acrylic, oils and constructs with clay and other jewelry-making materials. She proclaimed, “I like to do everything. Whatever you think about I do.” Hashem’s favorite medium is watercolor. “There is much challenge in watercolor. You can’t make a mistake and cover it up like other mediums,” she said. Hashem told that she loves contrast with color. She often

uses a small, rectangular red plexi-type glass to view her paintings prior to completion. Viewing through the red glass removes color from the paintings and only dark and light contrast is visible. Hashem divulged it’s her own method to create the right balance of light and shadow in her paintings. Hashem continues to grow in her creativity and remains steadfast in working with natural elements. “I love the earth and working with natural found objects like twigs or stones,” she said. Currently, Hashem has been adding wire and beads atop large pond stones to create stunning three-dimensional trees. Ghada Jundi Hashem lives in League City. ARTS ACCENTUATIN G THE POSITIVE Featured Artist: Ghada Jundi Hashem
By Kelley Dawson
Ghada Jundi Hashem not only brightens a room with her colorful paintings; she illuminates it with her ever-present positive energy. Her constant smile seems to broadcast through her works making each piece an absolute pleasure to gaze upon. Hashem has been drawing since she was very young. She told that her father was an artist and encouraged her creativity. Hashem said, “He even allowed me to paint and draw on the walls of our home to keep me drawing.” According to Hashem, she was very good at math and many in her family expected her to go into a math field. But she said her father’s words prevailed. “Go where you find yourself,” he told her. Hashem actually received an art scholarship in Egypt where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Helwan University in Cairo. She also received a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Amman Arab University in Jordan.
Hashem then married and moved to Chicago. She said she enjoyed “a new world of art” and took art classes there. Hashem later returned to the Middle East. She taught art in Kuwait and Jordan. Hashem shared while in Jordan she became the art department supervisor for 12 years. “I missed teaching,” expressed Hashem. She journeyed to the Houston area in the early 2000s. Hashem became certified to teach Art and Special Education. She began teaching again in the Pasadena Independent School District. She also set up a home studio to continue her own projects. Hashem revealed with all her worldly travels how much she adores the Houston area. She said, “I am very happy where I am.” Hashem admitted, “I even love the weather here.” Hashem believes art is very important for her students emotionally, physically, and psychologically. “Kids love to do art. It’s a kind of therapy that lets those express thoughts through art and builds self-esteem,” she explained. Hashem disclosed that she always discovers a lot of things from students including problems from home that they can work through with art. Hashem shares her enthusiasm for art and life with her students by focusing on creativity. She stated, “Everyone can do art. Look at figures, lines, shapes then connect it all together with shading and color to add new things from their own minds.” - Continued on Page 20

Masa Sushi:
Continued from Page 10
The young mixologist’s description of the Japanese sangria should get your mouth watering: A choice of apple or peach sake paired with plum wine and swirled with a medium of fresh fruit including orange, apple and cherry. After you put your glass down, in front of you will be sushi selected by Zhou’s cousin and delivered fresh from Hawaii. Not to dismiss the rest of the shipment, but most restaurants in the area will not include live offerings such as sea urchin (uni) or scallops.

Those wanting cooked dishes will not be disappointed with the Kobe beef offered. Long before a basketball player named his future basketball player of a son as such, Kobe beef has been prized in Japan for its taste and tenderness. Fed beer as part of its diet and given massages, the source of Kobe beef lives a good life, and then allows us to have a good one as well. The steaks and beef dishes offering Kobe beef practically disappears in the diner’s mouth, leaving behind only satisfaction and intense pleasure. The newly remodeled NASA location (977 E NASA Pkwy.) has expanded about 30 percent, growing from 3000 to 4500 square feet, said Zhou. Its party room can accommodate about 30 while the Dickinson restaurant (1804 FM 646 West, Suite R) has a private space that can fit in a cozy 25 diners. By going into one of the Masa Sushi locations, you can see into the dreams of Michael Zhou. His dreams are so good, you can taste them.

FOR THE LOVE OF SUSHI By Mark Evangelista When his mind is clear and he’s thousands of miles away on vacation from his Masa Sushi restaurants, Michael Zhou dreams of sushi – artful, precise cuts of the freshest fish atop aromatic rice with vinegar.
NASA location Expanded & Remodeled
“I love to make sushi; I love to make sushi,” said Zhou, repeating for emphasis. “If I go home and I don’t make sushi, in about a week, I dream about it,” said the sushi chef of 31 years. “In my dream, I am behind the sushi bar, making sushi. Everyday it’s all about fish, fish and fish.” For those passionate about Japanese food, Masa Sushi continues to craft a visual feast that satisfies the sushi devotee or newbie.
the vocabulary of the mix of married couples and families, the young professionals also dining on a recent holiday weekend might describe the scene as “very chill.”
With his wife Chi, Zhou and Masa Sushi are veterans of the Bay Area dining landscape with locations in Webster, Dickinson and Friendswood.
For those looking to become heroes to their co-workers, a spacious party room is available at no charge at Friendswood. Sliding doors convert this room into a business luncheon for 40-50. A huge flat-screen television is available.
Situated at 1780 S. Friendswood, the newest of the three locations has a laidback yet contemporary vibe. Dramatically dimmed lights and background music create a welcoming but cool environment. While the terminology may not be part of
If presentations and spreadsheets are not on the agenda, the space is a perfect destination for holiday parties and large birthday and anniversary soirees.
Lychee Martini
Third Masa Sushi now open in Friendswood
One way to make a splash either professionally or personally is to order a boatload of sushi. While not for passage, these wooden ornamental vessels will transport attendees to a land of full flavor and the wow factor. The smaller boat serves four people and starts at $200. The large boat, similar to the one near the entrance, serves 30 people with an entry point of $1000. Just like any good voyage, be sure to book this one in advance. Since opening in September of this year, Masa Sushi III has offered a full bar with an enticing selection of sake. The choices of the fermented rice wine of Japan is offered hot, cold, fruit-flavored and unfiltered. For those who look for signature libations, head bartender Charne’ Smuts recommended the lychee martini and the Japanese sangria. The martini features Absolut vodka and the juice of the exotic lychee with its sweet and mild tartness. Garnished with three lychees on a bamboo skewer, this is one to order if you love martinis. - Continued on Page 12

Featured Culinary Artist: Orasinee Ratanaarporn Thai Spice Rice-Noodle House 300 W. Bay Area Blvd. #900 281-554-6800 Background: When I was a girl, my father owned a small hotel (similar to Motel 8), and he owned a very big restaurant for tourists on the northeast side of Thailand. I am selftaught from my father’s restaurant. Many days, I had no choice but to cook for myself. My specialty: Balancing ingredients to create simply delicious meals. Signature dishes: A must-try: Angel Wings. Any restaurant can cook wings, but my wing secret is in the sauce. Pad Thai: This noodle dish is the most famous noodle dish from Thailand. All Thai restaurants have this dish on their menu, but the reason it has become my signature dish is because I created a pad Thai sauce that has all elements of taste: sweet, sour and salty. Most other Thai restaurants serve theirs with lime, plus sugar on the side. Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone famous? In 2002, I had the honor to cook for her majesty the queen of Thailand during her one week visit to Houston and stay at St. Regis hotel. (Absolutely a famous person!) Favorite non-famous persons: I did some charity work and cooked for orphanage in Thailand in year 2008. Cooking Tip: Cook from the heart! Technique Challenge: Play with the fire as you cook. (Control your heat levels high to low and back while cooking your food.)
